Land subsidence had been observed in recent years throughout the Southwest. Particular examples of this phenomenon that have gained wide publicity axe in the Long Beach and Central Valley areas of California and, the Houston area of Texas. Less well known is the fact that the land surface Is subsiding in many parts of Arizona, including the Phoenix area. The causes of this problem vary from place to place, as do also the rates of subsidence. In Houston it has been related to pumping water from artesian aquifers; in Long Beach to the development of oil fields; and in the Central Valley to both the lowering of artesian pressures in deep aquifers and the wetting of poorly consolidated surficial deposits. The mechanism by which subsidence occurs in southern Arizona, even though it can be correlated with the continued lowering of ground water levels, is not as apparent as in these other cases. It is the purpose of this paper to examine both the causes and affects of land subsidence in southern and central Arizona.

In a previous paper presented at the 1966 Annual Meeting of AIME we reported our work, conducted at the Pennsylvania State University, on the hydrocyclone washing of fine coal.' The initial evaluation based on that work demonstrated the feasibility of hydrocyclones as fine-coal cleaning devices, and in that previous paper we presented selected test data that showed in principle how product yield and assay respond to variations of the major cyclone operating variables. The present paper reports in greater detail on the findings and presents a comprehensive evaluation of our data as follows: ? Hydrocyclone throughput rates were related to feed pressure and other variables by regression equations. These equations are compared with other capacity- versus-pressure drop expressions taken from the literature on classification cyclones.

Since the decade of the 1990s is nearly upon us, I have focused on what I see are the likely trends featured in new large underground coal mines 10 years from now. I do this from the vantage point of having been involved in the installation of large mines for more than twenty years. Little of the equipment resources we have available today was unknown when I entered the coal business in 1960. There were continuous miners, longwalls and diesel-powered equipment in Europe, monitoring systems, computers, heavy media separation systems, froth flotation and conveyors then as there are now. A substantial evolutionary process has occurred with these and other mining machines and processes. Some evolved only to die out, such as boring-type continuous miners; others, such as longwall systems, flourished. My intuition tells me that since there have been largely evolutionary rather than revolutionary developments in the near past, the same is true of the future, at least for the next 10 years. In other words, the elements of what are in the future are with US now. Some, such as computer-based applications, may evolve beyond our wildest dreams -but I doubt it.

The amount of fines in run-of-mine coal has been increasing and coal quality has been deteriorating as a result of the increased use of mechanized and continuous mining methods. Removing the mineral matter and pyritic sulfur from coal prior to combustion will lower transportation costs, improve power plant performance and reduce sulfur dioxide emissions. Since physical cleaning methods can only remove individual particles of mineral matter and pyrite, it is necessary to crush and grind coal to fine sizes to separate these contaminants so they can be removed by deep cleaning processes. The increased portion of fines in run-of-mine coal together with attempts to increase the mineral matter removal efficiency have stimulated interest in fine coal cleaning technology. However, there are many problems to be solved before fine coal cleaning can be applied to power plant coals. These problems include: 1. coal cleaning plant capacity is reduced when conventional cleaning circuits are modifies to deep clean coals; 2. existing equipment and technology is not suitable for cleaning fine coal; 3. coal recovery is reduced; and 4. fine coal is difficult to dewater, dry, handle, transport and store.

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has tried many regional and laboratory efforts to develop measurement and monitoring techniques using environmental remote sensing technologies. In 1997, the agency established the Advanced Measurement Initiative (AMI): This is a eadquarters-level program, operating under the auspices of the EPA Office of Research and Development. The program is one result of the April 30,1996 White House Conference on Advanced Monitoring of the Environment. The EPA was encouraged to work with other federal agencies to leverage its remote sensing capabilities and use them to improve the efficiency, cost-effectiveness and flexibility of environmental measurement and monitoring for regulatory compliance and reinvention. During the fall of 1996, the EPA and the Department of Energy developed an interagency effort to broaden the use of governmental technologies for environmental measurement and monitoring. In addition, the EPA and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) conducted joint workshops on the use of NASA remote sensing and other technologies for water quality and pollution applications. In the meantime, the EPA proceeded with an industry-proposed workshop to explore ways to cooperatively examine new research and to develop commercial remote sensing systems. It also examined how these systems might become accepted by the EPA in the regulatory and compliance processes. In particular, industry was interested in where new remote sensing capabilities might fit in with EPA's efforts at regulatory reinvention. Historically, the mining and petroleum industries have been reluctant to experiment with or use environmental remote sensing. They were concerned with the unknown liability from potential discovery of previously unknown environmental problems. Moreover, resource industries have been reluctant to use remote sensing for environmental applications where the EPA did not accept such data or information as part of the compliance process. Acceptance by the EPA of these advanced measurement and monitoring technologies (AMMT) will be a major reason for industry's increasedd use of remote sensing in environmental "applications for regulatory compliance. In July 1997, the EPA Office of Research and Development hosted at the Colorado School of Mines a stakeholders workshop on the AMI program and industry-government collaboration. The workshop's aim was to demonstrate the usefulness of AMMT technologies for environmental applications. Stakeholders included the mining and petroleum industries; environmental services companies; state environmental agencies and local governments; remote-sensing, value-added companies and data suppliers. The workshop used specific technologies and applications as a way to develop collaborative demonstration projects for several AMMT technologies covering different environmental problems. The workshop focused on the use of highly sensitive hyperspectral (very narrow spectral bands), geographic information systems and surface mapping to identify active acid-producing mine dumps and wastes from benign wastes at Leadville, CO. NASA's advance infrared imaging spectrometer (AVIRIS) was the instrument used. It was developed at California Technology's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. The EPA, the US Bureau of Land Managment (BLM), the US Geological Survey and several environmental service contractors sponsored the overflight and data evaluation. The AVIRIS study demonstrated reliability (95% correct surface mineral identification) and cost-effectiveness of this technology to accurately map and discriminate active acid-producing mine wastes from benign wastes. It could also predict which streams would be effected by acid and toxic mineral drainage. The BLM'said that the AVIRIS overflight could save it $500,000 a year in surface sampling costs at Leadville. The AMI workshop further outlined five 1997 funded AMI projects of potential interest to the mining industry. They were: ? It is a pleasure to have the opportunity of being here today to discuss the application of horizontal filters in the metallurgical industries. The use of horizontal type filters has been limited in metallurgical plants. However, in the recent past there have been new designs of this type equipment which greatly broaden their field of application. Through their use in many applications, important economies can be achieved over more conventional methods. The first of the modern continuous horizontal filters was initially developed by Oliver United Filters as their scroll type horizontal filter. This was an outgrowth of the old Oliver Sand Table that was limited to very coarse, free filtering pulps containing no appreciable amount of fine particles. The sand table was rather limited in application. The later continuous scroll type horizontal filter provided for a reverse air blow after discharge which reslurried the heel remaining and permitted the filtration of pulps containing finer particles. In the manufacture of phosphoric acid by the ?wet? process, the filtration of gypsum from the strong acid presented an extremely difficult filtration problem due to blinding of the filter media caused by crystallization of the soluble salts contained in the acid. A filter which allowed for continuous cloth washing was required, and this led to the development of the continuous pan type, and travelling belt type horizontal filters which provided for this need. Among the filters developed were the Prayon by Engineering and Industrial Corporation of Luxembomg for use in their phosphoric acid plants. They are one of the largest manufacturers of phosphoric acid in Europe. The Dorr-Oliver Traveling Pan Filter was also developed by Mario Giorgini, Manager of Dorr-Oliver?s Italian subsidiary, for use with the Dorr Company?s phosphoric acid process. Basically, there are four existing types of horizontal filters in commercial use at this time: The scroll discharge non-pan type, the continuous belt type (Lurgi), rotary pan type, and the traveling belt type. The construction and principle of operation of these various filters will be discussed.

The phosphate industry is the fourth-ranking mineral industry in Tennessee; it has an annual value of 13,000,000 and a yearly production of almost 2,000,000 tons of phosphate ore. Tennessee, at present, is second in rank of phosphate production in the United States. In accord with the importance of this mineral commodity, the Tennessee Division of Geology, is conducting a continuing study of the industry' and the raw s, materials upon which it is dependent. Of the three type's of phosphate found in Tennessee, the brown phosphate rock of the Bigby faces of the Bigby-Cannon limestone is by far the most extensive in occurrence and is the only type being mined at the present time. Because of the importance of the brown phosphate ores, our Division has mapped , in detail the outcrop pattern of the Bigby facies of the Bigby-Cannon limestone. The geologic mapping was done by Dr C. W. Wilson, Jr. and others under his super-vision and the geology plotted on 7 1/2-minute topographic maps, with scale of 1 to 24,000 or 1 inch equals 2,000 feet. These maps will be available for use in the near future and will be published later-with complete geologic coverage.

The role of microorganisms in the leaching of metal sulfides is well established (Torma, 1977; Murr, 1980). However, this established knowledge applies mostly to chemolithotropic microorganisms such as Thiobacillus ferrooxidans which function optimally in leaching catalysis between 25-35° C, and in a pH range of 2-2.5. Although leaching with thermophilic microorganisms capable of extending the range of catalytic viability beyond 35° C is also documented, there are few if any attempts to optimize or extend sulfide concentrate leaching with thermophilic microorganisms. When mixed metal sulfides or other materials having different rest potentials (referenced to the standard hydrogen electrode, SHE, in the electromotive series) make contact in a conducting, aqueous medium, the contacting members will act as an electrochemical cell, with the member having the higher rest potential assuming the role of an electrical cathode. In leaching reactions involving such galvanic couples, the cathode becomes passivated, while the anodic member reacts vigorously due to the electro- chemical reaction which occurs (Hiskey and Wads- worth, 1975). Serry, eta1 (1978) observed that when chalcopyrite and pyrite were in intimate contact in natural ores, the chalcopyrite reacted vigorously by galvanic conversion as a result of the higher rest potential (~ 0.63 V) as compared to the chalcopyrite (~ 0.53 V). In addition, it was postulated that because of the elemental sulfur which can form on the anodic chalcopyrite in this galvanic conversion process, reactions in acid-bacterial medium would be expected to have accelerated copper extraction because of the conversion of any sulfur product layer on the chalcopyrite anode to sulfuric acid according to the following general reactions: [MS?M2+ + S° + 2e- (1) and 2S° + 302 + 2H20 bacteria?-2H2SO 4 (2)] where M in reaction (1) designates the metal (or metals in the specific case of chalcopyrite) to be released to solution by galvanic conversion.

The consumption of grinding media forms a significant part of the operating cost of a mineral processing plant. An estimated half billion pounds of steel in the USA and over one billion pounds in the world are consumed each year in wet grinding alone. However, there is some conjecture as to the interacting roles of abrasion and corrosion. In order to provide a more complete picture of the conjoint action of abrasion and corrosion, marked ball tests were conducted on different grinding ball compositions in a laboratory ball mill and the metal losses were measured on varying the conditions, i.e., pH, PO2, in wet grinding a Cu-Ni gabbroic rock and compared with taconite grinding. Ball wear rates ere discussed with respect to ball composition and microstructure and the varying conditions used in the grinding tests.

There are many types of filters designed to separate a solid from a liquid, including plate and frame presses, pressure leaf filters, gravity filters and vacuum filters. This discussion will be limited to continuous vacuum filtration and, specifically, to continuous rotary vacuum disc filters, drum filters and horizontal belt filters. The use of vacuum filtration can be advantageous in that: 1. The feed slurry can be delivered to the filter either by gravity or by a simple, inexpensive low pressure pump that only has to overcome the resistance of the feed piping system. 2. The filter equipment does not have to withstand high pressures. Consequently, a wide range of materials of construction, including plastic and fiberglas reinforced polyester (FRP), can be used in the fabrication. 3. After the form time, the filter cake is exposed to the atmosphere and the cake is accessible for further operations such as mechanical or physical dewatering, washing, and sampling on a continuous basis. 4. The discharge of the dewatered solids is continuous for directly feeding to the next operation; for example, a dryer. 5. Various methods of discharge can be fitted to the filter to effect optimum discharge of the dewatered cake solids. The principal of operation of a vacuum filter, regardless of type, is basically the same. The filter incorporates a filter medium supported on a drainage system and arranged so that the mixture to be separated (feed slurry) can be introduced to one side of the filter medium on which the solids are trapped and through which the liquid (filtrate) flows due to the applied vacuum.

Underground mining alters ground condition, producing a disturbance in the ground water regime. The level of disturbance is dependent on the local hydrology, geology, and type of mining. Serious damage is sometimes caused by ground water- when mine roofs collapse, causing subsidence. Subsidence is either unplanned, where pillars are inadequate to provide support; or planned, where total extraction occurs over a large area. The primary objective of this study is to investigate the effects of mine subsidence on the ground water hydrology in the Warrior Coal Basin. Underground openings resulting from coal mining activities have been the most significant cause of subsidence problems in the Warrior Coal Basin, the main source of coal in Alabama. This problem will be even more serious in the future because 19 of Alabama's 24 billion tons of coal reserves are classified as an underground source (Tolson, 1982).

The search. for massive sulphide orebodies is steadily being extended to greater depths as well as expanding outward into the large portion of the earth's surface where the sulphide bodies are deeply weathered. Massive sulphide orebodies are generally not large in dimensions. They are not like disseminated type sulphide bodies that form large ground exploration targets that can be detected at greater and greater depths simply by increasing the geometrical spacing between the geophysical transmitter and receiver. In¬creasing the transmitter-receiver spacing with massive sulphide bodies eventually "waters down" the anomaly from the body until it disappears into noise. If high surface conductivity is present, as is common in areas of deep weathering, the problem is compounded by the increasing response of the surface layer, as the receiver-transmitter spacing is expanded. The search to greater depths has important implications other than just detection of the orebody. Drilling costs are increased and the probability of missing the target are increased. Missing an orebody is an expense that is difficult to evaluate in dollars per line mile of survey especially since one does not know the value of what was missed. A ground Pulse EM method has the capabilities of solving the problems of deeper exploration particularly in areas of surface weathering it can attain deep penetration without large coil spacings, it also provides information from a complete range of frequencies. The method has other operational advantages since it is free of geometrical restrictions as to coil alignments and can operate in areas of high power line noise.

Early Models In 1906, Daniel Jackling demonstrated that relatively low-grade disseminated copper deposits could be mined profitably using mass mining technology. The ensuing years saw a gradual increase in activity aimed at defining ore targets for large reserves of disseminated supergene enriched copper ores. Prominent organizations, such as Calumet and Hecla, Phelps Dodge, and Asarco, established teams of geologists. They focused on interpreting oxidized and leached outcrops over supergene chalcocite ore bodies. Techniques to evaluate oxidized cappings and predict the presence of underlying supergene chalcocite enrichment ores were developed and put to practical use by the late 1920s and early 1930s (Locke, 1926; Blanchard 1939, 1968). Oxidized capping evaluation centered on recognizing oxidation products derived from the various sulfide minerals found in disseminated deposits. Chalcopyrite, for example, oxidizes to a characteristic reddish pitch limonite that exhibits characteristic boxworks. Chalcocite is recognized by earthy, powdery, indigenous, hematite-rich limonite. Pyrite weathers to characteristic cavities and yellowish jarositic limonites. Evaluation of cappings is a systematic effort of noting and estimating the preoxidation sulfide mineral content and copper grade in an oxidized outcrop using mineral composition and morphology of oxidation products. Several complications were noted early in this technology's development. For example, the associated pyrite content of protore greatly influences mobility of copper and iron during oxidation. High-pyrite disseminated sulfide assemblages, upon oxidation, mobilize iron as well as copper. This results in oxidized rock with many leached cavities, poorly developed boxworks, and poorly developed indigenous limonites. This effect was noted and used in a general way to identify possible development of supergene chalcocite. Indeed, strongly leached outcrops could be present over enriched ore. A second complication is the manner in which associated gangue minerals influence the products of sulfide oxidation. Reactive gangue minerals, such as carbonates, neutralize acids formed by sulfide oxidation. Thus, copper cannot be moved from oxidized outcrops. Relatively nonreactive gangue, such as quartz-sericite-altered schist or porphyry, neutralizes supergene acid very slowly. This allows copper to move out of the oxidized outcrop. Recognizing these features was closely allied to an early understanding of the processes involved in oxidation supergene enrichment of disseminated ores. Field observations and mineralogic mapping of oxidized cappings were important in discovering many important porphyry copper ore bodies during the 1920s. These include Silver Bell, Miami-Inspiration, and Morenci in Arizona; Tyrone, NM; and Ely, NV. Capping interpretation like-wise led to discoveries at Mineral Park and Esperanza in Arizona during the exploration surge that accompanied high copper prices in the 1950s. In the 1960s, Kennecott research geologists refined and quantified some aspects of oxide capping appraisal (Anderson, 1982). The ratio of jarosite plus hematite to the total limonite assemblage was shown to be proportional to amount of copper leached from the oxidized outcrop. Thus, if the limonite assemblege in an oxidized capping consists of 40% goethite, 20% jarosite, and 40% hematite, 60% of the original copper is leached. The amount of copper remaining in the capping, together with the limonite mineralogy, can then be used to estimate original copper grade in the outcrop, amount of leaching, and chalcocite enrichment grade (in feet/% copper) in the underlying supergene chalcocite zone (Anderson, 1982). Evaluation of oxidized cappings and prediction of chalcocite blanket ore targets were successfully used in the western US and South America through the 1950s. Discovery of new porphyry copper provinces in other regions during the 1950s and 1960s, however, underscored some limitations of capping evaluation technology. Porphyry copper systems in Australia generally oxidize and weather to hematitic cappings. Presumably, the semiarid monsoon environment and the long time that the sulfide systems have been exposed to oxidation on that continent lead to development of relatively stable hematite. It is now recognized that jarosite and goethite persist metastably in the limonite assemblage in all areas once sulfide oxidation is complete and acid generation ceases (Brown, 1971). The assemblage eventually converts to hematite. But, climatic conditions in arid southwest US allows metastable limonites to persist for a long time, thus providing information on former sulfide assemblages. The 3RPORT project is a 5-mile-long, 16-foot-internal-diameter tunnel excavated in hard rock by Slurry TBM in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Two-component grouting can be separated into two core areas of operation: batching and underground operations. This paper addresses the challenges faced and solutions implemented in these fundamental areas. The effects of external factors and their impacts on mix design and batching of grout will be explored. Underground, challenges of monitoring parameters and ensuring a proper mix between the two-components will be discussed, focusing on the adopted technical solutions and considerations to be taken in the design stage of tailskin grout ports.

The identification of the major subsidence areas in the Western Kentucky Coal Field has been made to distinguish the subsidence phenomena on the basis of geographical location Further, this identification process is based upon selected critical geological, topographical, and mining features in the coal fields. The proposed identification of the regions is derived from a comparison of the subsidence potential in a particular area. The most likely severe subsidence areas are compared to those with the probable low subsidence severity. The combination of certain geological and mining parameters involved allows for the derivation of a classification of the subsidence potential. It is recommended that further site specific studies should be performed on this area.

The production processes that are developed in the mining and minerals industry are manufactured to be exposed to very aggressive environments. Chemical, abrasion, and impact expose structures and equipment, steel or concrete, to a significant deterioration. This causes damage and adds high costs to operations that can be reflected in the destruction of equipment and structures in the arrest of the production process, which becomes very costly. Also, there is the potential for personnel accidents, which would require large sums of compensation for an employee, thus directly harming the image of the mining operation and company. Manufacturers of paints and coatings that have major centers for research and development (R&D Labs) distributed globally have developed high-tech products for durable protection from the elements for structures and equipment used in the mining industry. The difference between these paintings and coatings and what is normally known as conventional paints (e.g., those called domestic or decorative), is its chemical composition, structured around polymeric components that have highly resistant, chemical and physical properties to cope with extreme conditions to which they are exposed. With this, and only this, longer life of components can be achieved for equipment and structures used in the production processes of the mining industry. Today, in addition to the important features mentioned, some manufacturers of the paints and coatings dedicated to this highly modernized process have invested large sums of money in developing new products that add operational elements to the painting process. These coatings provide added value and significant performance to companies mining operations and that we can describe in three fundamental concepts:

There are two basic problems when one attempts to separate a solution of metal ions utilizing a chelation-solvent extraction cascade (commonly called liquid ion exchange). First, it is impossible to produce any great degree of separation unless the separation factor (also called selectivity, which is the ratio of the distribution coefficients) is very large. Second, the richest possible extracted product, using an infinite number of equilibrium stages, is at best only in equilibrium with the feed solution. These factors combined with equipment design considerations have led to a situation where only the most selective chelating agents are applicable to economic industrial operations. The authors know that distillation techniques are used routinely to separate compounds with nearly identical relative volatilities and that there should be a way of operating solvent extraction cascades in an analogous manner to obtain separations of metal ions. The advantage of this approach would be that solutions of metal ions of any desired purity could be obtained even if the separation factor was close to unity. This paper presents this idea and suggests some possible applications.

Stability assessment of entry roofs is an essential precursor to all underground design. Both multi-seam interaction and longwall mining can subject entries to radical changes in the surrounding stress field. Such loading changes frequently produce instability and failure in the roof, floor and pillars. Roofs are shown to be vulnerable to stress-induced failures, particularly when the load is unsymmetrical. To predict the effects of changes in stress field, roof failure conditions under increasing loads were studied using finite element analysis and body loaded photoelastic models. A large range of geologic conditions were evaluated and incorporated into the model using Monte Carlo methods. Entry analysis using the model showed the roof to be particularly vulnerable to shear with the location of the failure site changing to meet loading and geologic conditions. Results were correlated with field data to determine stress levels at which failure could be expected to occur. Based on this research a roof stability model SESAME was constructed for roof stability evaluation under specified loading conditions.

Leaching studies of low-grade manganese ore containing 31.77% Mn and 23.71 % Fe from Nishikhal, India, were carried out using pyritiferous lignite as a reductant in sulfuric acid medium. The variables studied were quantity of lignite, sulfuric acid concentration and temperature. Regression equations for the extraction of manganese and potassium were determined from 23 full factorial design data. The experimental conditions for the extraction of manganese were optimized using the steepest-ascent method. It was found that 99.03% of the manganese could be extracted in three hours with an ore to lignite ratio of 1:1.8, a sulfuric acid concentration of 1.9 M and a temperature of 99°C.
