"Climax Molybdenum Company’s Henderson Mine, owned by Freeport McMoRan Inc., is a panel caving molybdenum mine located 69 km west of Denver, Colorado. The mine utilizes long interconnected ore passes as part of the ore flow system. Knowing the approximate level of ore in these ore passes is beneficial for preventing increased dust concentrations in various production areas, as well as scheduling truck loading operations. Level monitoring has been achieved by using a strain gauge placed on the steel structure of the truck chute, an amplifier and a Programmable Logic Controller. This paper explains the concepts and limitations associated with using strain gauges for ore pass monitoring as well as applying proactive dust prevention and level monitoring interfaces. INTRODUCTION The Henderson Mine, located 69 km west of Denver, Colorado, is an underground molybdenum mine which uses a panel caving process to produce 18,000 tonnes per day currently. This process involves dumping ore down a series of interconnected ore passes leading to truck chutes. Trucks use these chutes to load ore and deliver this ore to an underground crusher. If ore is pulled below the lowest intercept of these ore passes, a ventilation pressure imbalance occurs which generates a large amount of dust on the levels where ore is being loaded into the tops of the ore pass. When a dust event occurs, work must be stopped until the dust settles. Once the dust settles the ore passes must be filled significantly before trucks can start pulling from the corresponding chute. This downtime and unplanned work due to dust can be avoided if the approximate ore pass levels are known. Strain gauges have been installed and tested on a truck chute at the Henderson Mine and the results of these tests have led to a series of concepts in using strain gauges to monitor ore pass levels. This paper explores these concepts and corresponding limitations and explains how the application of ore pass monitoring can be achieved with the use of strain gauges. Ore Pass and Ventilation Pressure Imbalance Overview At the Henderson Mine, there are typically two or four ore passes in different drifts that combine into one bin to create an ore pass complex as shown in Figure 1. When the level of ore is at or below the 7210 intercept (I82W), four drifts have a ventilation connection to each other and the 7655 exhaust level. A “piston effect” is created each time a bucket of muck is dumped down the ore pass. Figure 2 illustrates this phenomenon: as the loader in 621 dumps a bucket down the ore pass, the muck pushes the air in the ore pass down the 82A leg and back up the 82B leg which generates a large amount of dust. The bin regulators on 7655 cannot be opened enough to allow for this surge of air to be relieved onto the exhaust level and the dust ends up exhausting into the 625 and 627 drifts."

Environmental geologic maps of the Wilcox and Jackson-Yegua lignite belts of the Texas Coastal Plain delineate land areas on the basis of their natural characteristics. Criteria used to define map units include substrate, soil, topography, geologic process, vegetation, and land use. The maps are useful in planning and reclamation of lignite mines and in meeting the requirements of State and Federal surface mining laws. Specific applications include identification of land capability, recharge areas and geometry of aquifers, flood-prone areas, areas that may qualify for prime farmland status, and other areas sensitive to lignite mining.

The hydrodynamic bearing was first described by, Reynolds in 1886, and has since been widely applied in motors, engines, compressors, hydroelectric turbines, and other machinery. For various reasons, the hydrostatic bearing currently predominates in the large, horizontal rotating machinery field (e.g. grinding mills). However, the current industry trend towards increasing size and energy efficiency has resulted in renewed interest in the advantages of hydrodynamic bearings. These advantages include structural improvements, reduced bearing friction, improved bearing life, improved transient characteristics, and reduced lubricant pump size and power requirements. In particular, the higher energy efficiency results in substantial savings on large machines. This paper describes some aspects of the design of large hydrodynamic bearings based on thirty years, of experience in the design of such bearings on grinding mills ranging in journal size from 2.1 m to 6.4 m, see Table 1.

A jet slurry apparatus has been constructed to test corrosive/erosive wear properties of grinding ball metal. Plain high carbon steel heat treated to a hardness of about 60 RC was used. Slurries of quartz and chalcopyrite ore concentrate were used as the jetting media. Weight loss due to pure corrosion was determined by the linear polarization technique and weight loss due to pure erosion was determined by jetting while cathodically protecting the sample. By comparing the total weight loss with the sum of the weight losses from pure corrosion and pure errosion it was found that there was a synergistic effect between corrosion and erosive wear. Erosive wear rates are given as a function of pH and mineral type.

The recent nonequilibrium electrophoretic mobility measurements by laser-Doppler electrophoresis coupled with the stability and prevalence of collector colloids in soluble-salt flotation systems suggest that the selective flotation of alkali halides is due to the adsorption of oppositely charged collector colloids by heterocoagulation. Previously reported flotation results confirm this surface charge/collector colloid adsorption model. These results also indicate that the sign of the surface charge has a significant effect on the extent of particle dispersion/aggregation. In this regard, the nature of such particle interaction forces at high ionic strengths are examined to improve our understanding of these systems. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) is now being used to directly measure the interaction forces responsible for the stability of these alkali halide aggregates observed in optical microscopy studies. Results from this study indicate that, while repulsive hydration forces exist between similarly charged hydrophilic particles, attractive forces exist between oppositely charged hydrophilic particles in high ionic strength solutions.

Introduction For many major mining projects the time frame from initial planning to production can be measured in decades. Hecla's Silver Shaft project, scheduled to go into production by the end of this year, includes a complete surface facility, shaft with an ultimate depth of 2.4 km (7,700 ft), complete ore pass and loading pocket system, and 610 m (2,000 ft) of development drifting and stope preparation. Utah statute defines sovereign lands as "those lands lying below the ordinary high water mark of navigable bodies of water at the date of statehood, and owned by the state by virtue of its sovereignty." The lands within the bed of Great Salt Lake (GSL) are, by this definition, sovereign lands, acquired at statehood in 1896 in accordance with the "equal footing" doctrine, granting each state control and ownership of navigable waters and the lands underneath those waters within its borders. Under public trust doctrine, the state, as trustee for the people, bears responsibility for preserving and protecting the right of the public to use of the waters for navigation, commerce, fishing, recreation, and wildlife habitat. Also by statute, sovereign lands are defined as "state lands," to be managed by "multiple use sustained-yield principles." The Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands is given management authority for sovereign lands and, as manager, has responsibility to prepare comprehensive plans, initiate studies of the lake and its resources, implement comprehensive plans through state and local entities, and coordinate the activities of various divisions within the Department of Natural Resources (DNR). The Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands also has responsibility for management of mineral leasing on sovereign lands. The many resources on the lake--water, minerals, wildlife, recreation, archeological and historical values--are managed by as many state agencies which occasionally creates conflicts. The brines of GSL contain several ions that crystalize into valuable minerals during evaporation. The major ions in the lake are, in order of relative abundance, chloride, sodium, sulfate, magnesium, and potassium. Mineral products which are currently extracted from lake brines are sodium chloride, magnesium chloride brine which can be sold as flake magnesium chloride or further processed into magnesium and chlorine gas, and potassium sulfate. Mineral products which have potential for extraction include gypsum, sodium sulfate, and trace amounts of lithium, boron, and bromine. The GSL contained an estimated 4.3 billion short tons (st) (3.9 billion metric tons [mt]) of dissolved salts in 1998. Utah Geological Survey (UGS) estimates of the dissolved salt content in GSL have fluctuated from 4.0 to 5.5 billion st (3.6 to 5.0 billion mt) due to the dynamic conditions in the lake as salts are precipitated and redissolved, and due to the diversion of brines from GSL, such as the West Desert Pumping Project. The lake has four areas of varying salinity, separated by dikes or other man-made structures: north arm and Stansbury Bay brines at near saturation (25 to 27 percent total dissolved solids [TDS]); the main body of the south arm with concentrations ranging from 7 to 15 percent TDS as lake elevations fluctuate; the waters in Farmington Bay at approximately 3 to 5 percent TDS; and Bear River Bay at <1 to 7 percent TDS. The percent TDS in Bear River Bay fluctuates with lake level, and changes in Bear River inflow. The transfer of salts from the south arm to the north arm has raised questions about the viability of the mineral and brine shrimp industries. The UGS and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) continue to monitor salinities at designated sites on the lake to document changing lake salinity. A recurrent theme is that placement of dikes and diversions can have significant and rapid impacts on various conditions in the lake. Hydrocarbon resources on the lake are significant, but presently undeveloped. The hydrocarbons are low gravity (4 to 9 degree API) and tar-like, contain high nitrogen concentrations, and up to 12 percent sulfur. The unusual characteristics of the oil have been the subject of studies by chemists at Weber State University and University Louis Pasteur de Strasbourg. However, these resources are difficult, and at present, uneconomic to extract using current technology because of the nature of the hydrocarbons, and production in "an offshore, highly saline environment." Oolitic sand deposits make up many of the beaches and shorelines around the lake. Because of their high calcium carbonate content, oolites have been used by Magnesium Corporation of America (MagCorp) and its predecessors for acid neutralization and dike construction. Oolites are also used in very minor amounts in flower drying. The Utah Division of Oil, Gas and Mining reports up to 130,000 st (118,000 mt) mined annually by MagCorp from U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) lands adjacent to GSL. Currently, there are twelve producing mineral leases which generated slightly more than $1,000,000 in royalties during calendar year 1998. IMC Kalium Ogden Corp. (IMC Kalium) produces potassium sulfate and magnesium chloride from brines concentrated through solar evaporation in Bear River Bay and Clyman Bay. By-product sodium chloride is transferred to IMC Salt, which packages and sells the salt. MagCorp produces magnesium metal from brines concentrated in Stansbury Bay. Cargill Salt produces sodium chloride from brines provided by MagCorp under a lease agreement. Morton Salt produces salt at the southeast end of Stansbury Island. Lastly, North Shore Limited produces cocentrated brines for use in dietary and mineral/vitamin supplements near Spring Bay in the north arm of the lake. Producers of magnesium, potash, and salt from GSL contribute significantly to the value of metals and industrial minerals in Utah. Together these companies contribute approximately $240 million in gross value, or 18 percent of the value of the state&apos;s nonfuel mineral production. Most of this production is exported.

The Manapouri Power Station, commisioned in 1969, is located in Fiordland National Park in the South Island of New Zealand. It is the country’s largest hydro power scheme and can generate 700MW of electricity. The power station utilizes the hydraulic head of Lake Manapouri, using an underground power station and a 10 km-long tailrace tunnel was constructed by drill-and-blast to allow discharge to Doubtful Sound. Power generation fell short of expectations due to higher than expected friction in the tailrace system. To remedy this a second tailrace tunnel was constructed between June 1998and May 2002. It consisted of a 10 m diameter, 10 km long tunnel in predominately gneissic rock and was excavated using an Atlas Copco Robbins TBM. High water inflows, Owner/Contractor production incentives and a major claim settlement were handled during the 5 1/4 year project. This paper discusses TBM advance rates, utilization factors that increased in the second half of the project plus an innovative method for sealing Tunnel 1 to construct the bifurcation.

Calcium carbonate is one of the highest volume industrial mineral products in North America. It is used in filler and extender applications, roofing products, floor tile, glass manufacture, etc. Calcium carbonate has over a dozen major filler and extender applications plus a host of minor uses. North American consumption of calcium carbonate fillers and extenders in 1991 is estimated at over 5,000,000 tons valued in excess of $400,000,000. There were five major suppliers of calcium carbonate fillers in the Middle Atlantic region in 1988 :?Bestone, Genstar, National Gypsum, Thomasville Stone and Lime, and White Pigment. With the exception of Genstar&apos;s Maryland operation, all of these operations are within a few miles of York, Pennsylvania. The Millington Group (TMG) purchased the assets of Bestone Corporation in February of 1989. TMG then seized the opportunity to strengthen its business position by acquiring National Gypsum&apos;s and White Pigment&apos;s Pennsylvania filler businesses in December, 1989 and July, 1990, respectively. By July of 1990 TMG&apos;s filler business acquisitions included six quarries and one underground mine, totaling over 1,200 acres and three processing facilities. The assets were restructured into two new companies - Delta Carbonate, Inc. and Penroc, Inc. (hereafter collectively referred to as Delta). Delta identified the assets of the three predecessor companies as undervalued from the outset. The initial phase of Delta&apos;s turnaround strategy was to reassess the combined mineral. mining, processing, transportation and marketing assets. The second phase was to effectively integrate these resources in order to exploit their inherent synergy.

The determination of the proper cutoff grade for an open pit metal mine is based on economic criteria and the operating philosophy of the mining company. Previous papers have dealt with the balance of a fixed mine production capacity versus economic return. Mine production capacity is often controlled by the amount of mining equipment and the working area in the pit. A complete cutoff grade strategy is a balance of economic return of mining higher grade material versus the capital costs of additional production capacity and the operating cost of moving the waste and low grade material to assure proper ore release. An approach to the problem is presented which is based in part on work by previous authors and provides guidelines to proper cutoff grade strategy encompassing the time value of money and variable commodity prices.

Aggregate is an essential input to every economy, so governments need to ensure a sustainable supply of these resources through planning. There is also a need to shift from a linear economy to a more circular one, in which wastes are recycled rather than landfilled, so as to increase eco-efficiency. The purpose of the Sustainable Aggregates Planning in South East Europe (SNAP-SEE, SEE/D/0167/2.4/X) project is to develop a Toolbox for Aggregates Planning to assist governments and stakeholders in national, regional, primary and secondary, aggregates planning in southeast European countries. The Toolbox comprises documents on stakeholder consultation, data and analysis methodologies, a vision of best practices in aggregates planning and how to build an aggregates plan. The Toolbox will also support ongoing efforts to enhance minerals policy in the European Union (EU) as called for by the European Innovation Partnership on Raw Materials. The ventilation of a mine is one of the key elements to a successful mining operation. It is, or should be, one of the primary concerns of the mining engineer at an underground mine. Too frequently, however, insufficient thought is given to future requirements. As a result, the mines suddenly find themselves with ventilation problems that cannot be corrected economically, or in short order, and have to suffer the consequences of being on the verge of having units shut down from time to time until the venlilaltion system can be improved. Insufficient ventilation in capital-intensive mining can cause production losses, the values of which far outweigh the significant costs of providing and operating an adequate ventilation plan. Many theories, and techniques in planning and control of underground ventilation systems have been developed over the years . It is the intent of this paper to point out some of the fundamental concepts, from the practical point of view, in the design and operation of a ventilation system, with special reference to underground mines using a room-and-pillar method.

The present work discusses the nuances of scaling and flow similarity to develop a 1/40th scale version of a longwall coal mine. Details on the geometric, kinematic, and dynamic scaling of the physical model are presented and discussed. This works also discusses using a 30% CO2 – 70% He gas mixture as a surrogate for methane. It also presents the implications of various Reynolds numbers (ranging from 7,000 to 140,000) and rotation of the shearer drums in the dynamic representation of the airflow and gas mixtures in the physical scaled model.

Current steel consumption for grinding media, mill liners and rods in North America runs in excess of 400,000 tpy in the mineral processing industries. Steel consumption ranks as one of the major consumables along with energy in most operations with total annual industry expenditures in excess of $275 million. It is generally agreed that there are 3 main categories of wear responsible for this metal loss. These three main types can be loosely defined as follows; 1) Abrasion. The cutting, rubbing, scrapping and gouging of the metal surface by the ore with which it is in contact; 2) Impact. To help focus production and maintenance budgets, mining executives are increasingly turning to production metrics to make key decisions. Role of mine and mill data Companies employ a variety of information systems to allow employees to accomplish their operational tasks, and each worker is focused on the metrics, or key performance indicators (KPI), for his or her individual function. For example, machine operators monitor throughput and cycle time to keep the machines running continuously and to meet daily production quotas. Meanwhile, the maintenance teams monitor machine performance, overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) and meantime between failure to predict and help prevent downtime.

The problem with best practices occurs when they do not work. This happens when the seldom-stated assumptions underlying the practice are not met. This paper provides some examples for the mining industry: (1) when core splitting is inappropriate, (2) when the use of fire assays for placer samples is inappropriate, and (3) when high-grading may be acceptable. Geologic conclusions are, in the final analysis, expressions of judgment predicated upon knowledge and experience. A geologic conclusion, however, purports to be more than an arbitrary determination—it is reached as a consequence of method. No specific method is required, but the method used must be an orthodox method, in accordance with orthodox definition of terms, and the one best adapted to the dealing with the questions asked about the property in question. Whether the so-called “best practice” is really applicable to the job at hand must be decided on the basis of professional scientific judgment. When one decides to deviate from a published “best practice” for sound scientific reasons, describe in detail in the report what the so-called “best practice” is, why it was inappropriate for the project, and why the method used was better. If one becomes aware that a “best practice” is being proposed, actively urge those proposing it to include in its description the underlying assumptions that must be met in order for the “best practice” to be valid.

Barrick closed the Bullfrog Operation in November 1999.During its life, the Bullfrog produced ore from three open pit mines and an underground mine; 32,000,000 tons of ore were processed at the 9,000-ton per day oxide mill. The mill tailings were deposited in a 320-acre tailings impoundment. When operations ceased, an estimated 750,000,000 gallons of water remained to be removed from the tailings impoundment. During operation, the drain down water from the tailings impoundment was pumped back to the mill for reuse; since closure of the mill, the drain down water has been managed by a combination of passive and forced evaporation.

Electromagnetic energy emitted from electronic devices has been known to interfere with other electronic systems, hindering their ability to function properly. Mines have many electronic devices critical to the health and safety of mine workers that could be negatively affected by electromagnetic interference (EMI). To ensure that devices are electromagnetically compatible, tests must first be conducted to measure emissions and check for immunity. Standards are available across multiple industries that prescribe emission limits and test methods for electronic devices. A literature review was conducted in this study, and an overview of EMI standards in other industries is provided. Also, an example of how a standard can be applied to mining equipment is presented.

Through the early stages of metamorphism, when diffusion is the predominant mineral forming process. there is a tendency toward homogenization of rock units; but there is also zoning resulting from differing primary lithology and structure. Later stages of metamorphism, when infiltration occurs, tend to intensify zoning within the rock mass. The above concepts have been borne out in exploration of talc deposits and skarns. Initially, geologic mapping and soil sampling are directed to understanding mineralogy and petrology. Later, seismic methods are employed to further define lithology in the subsurface. Magnetometer surveys can also define some metamorphic units efficiently. Then, drilling must ensue to confirm lithology and determine extent of mineralization.

Today the standard method for grinding ore is the wet process. This is mainly due to the fact that the downstream process is wet and considering the total circuit dry grinding is not the most eco­nomical method for the comminution of the ore. Presently in gold ore processing dry grinding is only applied in cases where whole ore roasting is required downstream from the milling plant or if organic carbonaceous matters and sulfides are the primary reasons for the refractoriness. Since dry ore can be fed to the roaster, a dry grinding mill can advantageously be applied. In cases where d1y grinding could be applied advantageously for instance if the ore contains water soluble material and wet grinding is not possible there are serious concerns prevailing within the industty against this technology due to several reasons. Besides of the aspects as discussed later in this paper, there are several plants in operation with little success and considerable operational prob­lems. The reasons for this often lie in the fact that the several com­ponents of such a plant are bought from independent sources with­out considering the system requirements. It is essential that the dry grinding plants require accurate design between drying, pneumatic transport and grinding of the ore in the circuit. This paper will address some of these concerns raised in the industiy from a mill vendor's view along with discussing the development for the selection and configuration of the various dty grinding circuits.
