Evaporite units of the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin are known to host native sulfur. In British Columbia, a large number of oil and gas exploration drilling holes reported intersections with native sulfur. The most important ones include 6 meters (20 feet) and 27 meters (90 feet) of native sulfur among 23 occurrences in Devonian Muskeg evaporite or adjacent Slave Point reef facies carbonates. A small Frasch sulfur deposit is known from Devonian Wabamun Group sediments near Camrose in South Central Alberta. Occurrences of native sulfur are common also in association with presently mined gypsum of Devonian Burnais Formation in southeastern British Columbia. Triassic sediments with evaporite members in British Columbia are also known to contain native sulfur showings. A widespread presence of anhydrite in many sedimentary units of Alberta and British Columbia together with oil and gas fields in the same areas and associated native sulfur occurrences point to a possibility for Frasch sulfur deposits in this part of western Canada.

The optimum flow of materials through a smelter is an extremely important phase of the mining cycle. A typical copper smelter will have up to $US 1,000,000 per day of copper being processed. The motion of the overhead cranes in moving the ladles filled with copper matte and slag from furnace to furnace is prescribed but there can be numerous variables to consider. Some of these variables to the system can be: the speed of the overhead cranes, the number of cranes, the size of the ladles, the size of the furnaces, the number of furnaces and the sequence in loading the furnaces. A simulation model was constructed of a working smelter in the SW of the United States. The model has been used to study the effect of varying parameters of the system. The program runs as follows: an input menu appears on the PC screen and the user can navigate through it and change any of the data; the simulation takes place and the results of the simulation sent to a data file. Animation of the system then is shown on the screen in "cartoon" fashion. The software chosen for the simulation was GPSSI H (') and PROOF Professional (') for the animation. The model presented here is believed to be the first reported simulation and animation model for a complete, working smelter.

The last twenty years of development in Process Mineralogy are reviewed. Since the milestone review by Henley in 1983, which projected the concept and suggested closer working relations between mineral processing and mineral science, the second generation (1983-2003) has made significant progress. Examples are to be found in improved sampling and high-confidence flotation testing, and in automated quantitative mineral measurement. The recent addition of end-member studies has provided a clearer view of the overall ore mixture milled from its constituent geological components. In all, better predictive abilities have resulted from these improvements to Process Mineralogy. These improvements have led to more significant business impacts in mineral resource characterization, and in optimization of existing concentrator operations.

Utility coal specifications usually contain a requirement for a maximum moisture content in order to prevent coal handling problems and to minimize evaporative losses in the boiler. As most coal cleaning processes are water-based, dewatering and sometimes drying steps are required to meet moisture specifications. Screens are often used for dewatering, with centrifuges and filters used to further reduce moisture in many cases. Algorithms to predict the performance of screens were developed for the Coal Cleaning Simulator running under Aspen Plus during a project sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy and the Electric Power Research Institute. These algorithms include calculations for the size separation and a calculation for moisture content of the oversize product based on particle size and specific gravity distribution. This paper discusses the algorithm for predicting the moisture content of coal dewatered by screens.

1.1 GENERALIZED METHODS OF SUPPRESSING THE INFLOW OF GROUND WATER DURING THE CONSTRUCTION OF SHAFTS, DRIFTS AND TUNNELS Various methods are used to prevent or minimize the inflow of ground water into underground workings during their excavation. The two most common methods include freezing the saturated rock and grouting using cement, sodium silicate, polyurethane and/or other chemicals. Each of these technologies for combatting the inflow of ground water is effective only under specific hydrogeological conditions. For example, although the freezing of saturated ground is among the more universally adopted methods, it is designed to provide only temporary protection during construction. Before the saturated rock thaws it is necessary to emplace a waterproof liner which is labor intensive, time consuming, and expensive. Consequently, freezing is used only in exceptionally complex hydrogeological conditions, namely in those cases where the water-bearing strata consist of unstable rock or the ground water has an anomalous hydrochemistry. The classical grouting of saturated rock, carried out from the surface or from the face of the underground workings for the purpose of limiting the inflow of ground water during excavation, utilizes both cement and a variety of chemical grouts. Cement grouting has been regarded as the main method of combatting the inflow of ground water in fractured rock throughout the world. In such countries as the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG), Canada, the Republic of South Africa and Great Britain, cement grouting is the main method of reducing the inflow of ground water during the excavation of mine openings. In Great Britain and the FRG, cement grouting has been used in 80% of all shaft excavations. In the Republic of South Africa cement grouting has been used in almost 100% of all the shafts that have been constructed. The installation of grout curtains into permeable water- bearing strata significantly reduces their permeability and increases the rock strength. Grouting has the greatest effect in fractured sandstones, certain well indurated shales, fractured granites, fractured quartzites, and karstic limestones or dolomites. The following principal factors must be considered when assessing the expediency of grouting rock with cement: the geometry of the network of fracture openings, the saturated hydraulic conductivity of the fractured rock, the hydraulic head acting on the water in the rock, and the chemical composition of the ground water. On the basis of the geometry of the fractures and the thickness of each hydrostratigraphic unit, the characteristics of the cement grout are selected. As a rule, the cementing of large fractured zones with high ground water velocities is carried out using inert fillers (sand, mill slag, loam, loess, crushed limestone), special types of cement, setting accelerators, and high cement concentrations in water. Calcium chloride, soda ash, sodium silicate, sodium nitrate, amino alcohols, tin bichloride, trisulphate nitrate, and lumnite are used extensively as the setting accelerators for cement grouts. In the FRG and Poland, special cement injection compounds that embody a mixture of cement and active cement metal salts, water additives and binding substances are being used for the cementing of saturated zones with rapid ground water velocities. These reagents accelerate the rate of structure-forming reactions. In spite of the wide variety of additives used for cement grouts, the effectiveness of the method in large fractures below the water table is either poor or it leads to a very large consumption of cement due to the erosion of the grout through the cracks before it hardens. At the present time, a large number of cement types and brands are being produced by various countries. These variations permit cementing to be employed in a variety of geological conditions. However, both pure cement grout and grouts with fillers constitute unstable systems with a high water loss rate. Therefore during the grouting of finely fractured rock the cement grout's premature loss of a large amount of free water causes its consistency to increase, whereupon the grout solidifies. Consequently, it inadequately penetrates into the fine fractures of the stratum. In addition the high water loss rate in the cement grout causes unreacted cement particles to remain, which greatly reduces the grout hardness and the resulting rock strength characteristics are weakened. As a result, the binding properties of the cement are utilized perhaps up to 60%. The remaining portion is left in the grout as a filler. All these conditions significantly decrease the efficiency of the isolation effort both with respect to strength and cost. In order to expand the cement grouting method, re- search is being conducted to improve the quality of cement grout, to increase its range of application with respect to permeability control, to reduce its water loss rate and to increase its capacity to withstand the erosive and corrosive effects of poor quality ground water. Ground-water contamination from uranium operations could be avoided with proper site analysis techniques. Contamination from tailings disposal sites is carried downgradient within permeable hydrostratigraphic units which can be located and delineated with a combination of drill holes and borehole geophysical logs. Engineering safeguards can be designed into a disposal site by determining if permeable hydrostratigraphic units exist which will dominate the flow system and provide seepage paths for contaminates. It is more cost-effective to accurately assess seepage potential with geophysical logs before contamination becomes a problem than to be faced with a major clean-up effort after contamination has occurred. If a uranium waste impoundment already has a ground-water contamination problem, then borehole geophysical logs may be used to delineate the contaminated zones which need to be cleaned up. It is less expensive to withdraw the contaminated plume from only within the affected zones rather than attempt to dewater the entire area. Consequently, the geophysical logs are invaluable in assessing which zones should be pumped and where packers should be set for construction of piezometers to allow monitoring of water-quality changes. A surface geophysical technique is being tested and developed for monitoring of seepage frum uranium tailings impoundments. Geoelectric soundings and profiles from direct current resistivity surveys can locate anomalous areas for the placement of drill holes to better assess seepage. This reconnaissance technique should eliminate random hit-or-miss drilling at sites where monitoring is required. Tests and experiments are being done on developing the capabilities of this technique to incorporate complex resistivity data to assess cultural impedence noise which complicates simple resistivity data.

In this paper, we consider open pit optimization. At present, most methods specify the economic parameters and then find the corresponding optimal pit. But as the economic environment varies (which it does regularly these days), the "optimal" pit changes and quite often changes markedly. The questions are: by how much does it change and which parameters are most influential? The functional approach of Technical Parameterization of Reserves, devised by Matheron in 1975, gives the set of all the different optimal pits, under any economic condition. It separates technical design and economic assumptions and thus permits the use of several optimality criteria when choosing the final pit, and not just the maximization of an additive profit formula. Very efficient specific algorithms are presented to obtain all the potentially optimal pits. Fluctuations in the parameters induce changes in the optimum design. Inclusion relations that exist generate very tight bounds and hence very quickly detect optima, even when using a classical adaptation of maximization techniques (graph theory, moving cone, dynamic programming ...). The advantage of Technical Parameterization of Reserves over other methods is that it provides a nested sequence of optimal pits which can then be used for mine scheduling. Many possible mining schedules can be obtained by using the family of technically optimal projects to split up the orebody. The "optimal" schedule, which is in fact a compromise between the different requirements of the economists, the mine planner and the metallurgist, can be chosen from within the wide scope of possibilities. A practical example of mine scheduling for a chromite mine is presented in detail.

Solution mining operations often encounter difficulty maintaining adequate leach solution flow into the ore formation because of loss of formation permeability near the injection well. Permeability loss caused by swelling and breakup of clays and fine particle migration can often be the cause of the problem. Combined permeability and leaching tests were done in the laboratory on samples of clay bearing ores to evaluate a clay-stabilizing polymer's effectiveness in preventing the problem. Test results indicate that treating the ores with cationic polymers could maintain permeabilities two to five times greater than the long-term permeabilities present in untreated ores. Both alkaline (pH 8.5) and acidic (pH 2.0) leaches were used in the permeability leaching tests. To determine the reasons for the success of the clay stabilizing polymer, clay swelling tests and zeta potential measurements were made on untreated ore samples and on ore samples treated with the cationic polymer. Test results indicate the cationic polymer could reduce the degree of negative charge on fine particles and their tendency to disperse, as well as reduce clay swelling. Test results indicate a potentially beneficial effect on operating parameters such as capacity and injection pressure during leaching, if clays and fines are kept stabilized. This may be done by treating the zone of high fluid velocity near injection wells with cationic polymers.

"Formation of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), an oxidizing agent stronger than oxygen, by chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), which is a copper iron sulfide mineral, during grinding, was investigated. It was observed that chalcopyrite generated H2O2 in pulp liquid during wet grinding and also in the solids when placed in water immediately after dry grinding. The generation of H2O2 during either wet or dry grinding was thought to be due to a reaction between chalcopyrite and water where the mineral surface is catalytically active in producing •OH free radicals by breaking down the water molecule. The effect of pH in the grinding medium or in the water in which solids are added immediately after dry grinding showed that the lower the pH value, the higher the H2O2 generation. When chalcopyrite and pyrite are mixed in different proportions, the formation of H2O2 was seen to increase with increasing pyrite fraction in the mixed composition. The results of H2O2 formation in pulp liquid of chalcopyrite and together with pyrite at different experimental conditions have been explained by Eh-pH diagrams of these minerals. This study highlights the necessity of revisiting the electrochemical and/or galvanic interaction mechanisms between the chalcopyrite and pyrite in terms of their flotation behavior.IntroductionHydrogen peroxide causes nonselective oxidation of sulfide minerals if present in pulp liquid. Oxidation of sulfide minerals takes place when they are exposed to atmosphere and during the grinding process when the particle size is reduced for flotation. The oxidation of chalcopyrite leads to iron dissolution from the particle surface and from a metal-deficient, sulfur-rich surface (Fairthorne et al., 1997). Other studies report the formation of iron hydroxide on the surface with the metal ion dislodged on the surface (Buckley and Woods, 1984; Chander, 1991). The chemical reactions for the oxidation of chalcopyrite in alkaline and in acidic solutions with the addition of oxidants, such as oxygen or hydrogen peroxide, are shown in Eqs. (1) and (2), respectively (Shi and Fornasiero, 2010)."

There are numerous suggestions in the literature on methods of obtaining representative samples of waste rock or mill tailings. Some suggested methods would result in thousands of samples and very high costs for a large facility. There is no general rule that can (or should) be followed, such as collection of a given number of samples per mass of material, per acre of impoundment, or per foot of drillcore. Each site is different, and the adequacy of sampling must be tailored to the site. A logical approach is to let the variability at the site dictate the number of samples that should be collected and analyzed, and then to quantify and evaluate the results by means of standard statistical methods.

The majority of non-drive conveyor pulleys use rotating shafts, and typical idler rolls use non-rotating shafts, even though both products are used to support and guide the conveyor belt and its load. This paper will explore and compare the requirements for rotating and non-rotating shaft designs and the impact of that design on the product. Additionally, it will explore how the “roller” bearing types (deep groove ball, tapered, or spherical) affect these designs.

Introduction The Gold Quarry gold deposit is the largest bulk tonnage epithermal gold deposit in northeastern Nevada to be developed by Newmont Gold Co., formerly known as Carlin Gold Mining Co. Exploration and development of the deposit extended over a period of nearly 50 years before bulk tonnage mining became economically feasible. Proven reserves at Gold Quarry are currently estimated at more than 255 t (8.2 million oz.) of gold, accounting for more than 40% of the total Carlin Trend mineable reserves for 1986. Milling began in late 1985; dump leaching of lower grade ores began in May of 1986. The mill has exceeded the initial design throughput rate of 6.3 kt/d (7000 stpd) and is now processing more than 8 kt/d (9000 stpd). The dump leach facility will process more than 7.3 Mt (8.1 million st) of lower grade ores in 1986. The Gold Quarry ore body is to be developed by an open pit that will eventually be 1830 m (6000 ft) long, 1220 m (4000 ft) wide and 300 m (1000 ft) deep. The mine currently produces 77 kt/d (85,000 stpd) on a 24-hour-a-day, seven-day workweek. Planned pit production will increase to nearly 168 kt/d (185,000 stpd) in 1988. Production equipment currently includes one Demag H-/285, three Komatsu PC-1500 hydraulic shovels, two Cat 992C loaders and 21 90 to 135 t (100 to 150 st) haul trucks. Under contract to the U. S. -Department of.-Interior, Office of Coal. Research, Hittman Associates recently completed a 16 month study of the environmental-factors associated with the siting, construction, and operation of large scale coal refineries. (1 2) The objective of this study was to identify the environmental effects and to define the magnitude of these effects and the approaches which can be used to mitigate adverse environmental consequences. In the study, the five major coal bearing regions of the country having reserves adequate to support a number of large scale coal refineries were considered. The regions considered were: Appalachian, Eastern Interior, Fort Union, Powder River, and Four Corners.

The Longwall Strata-Control and Maintenance System (LoSCo-MS) is a software and data-communication system developed at the University of Alabama. This system integrates real-time shield monitoring, data presentation, analysis and the forecasting of forthcoming events. The main objective of this system is to provide stability information on longwall panels, including excessive shield load, low setting pressure, leg leakage, poor shield performance and imminent maintenance problems. Analyses of various mining and geological parameters were also performed to determine past and present roof characteristics and to forecast roof loading patterns for the following mining cycles, the next periodic weighting, etc. A local coal mine in the Warrior Coal Basin has adopted this system to provide daily evaluation of ground stability and maintenance problems in their longwall panels. Two years of experience with this system is covered in this paper.

There is no single mining problem at Benson that does not exist at some other mine. There are four, however, that require special attention primarily because they occur together and have an influence on each other. These are the nature of the mineral occurrence, the shape of the ore body, the operating schedule, and the climate. It is the purpose of this paper to describe mining practices in relation to these four factors. Iron ore was first noticed in the Star Lake area early in the nineteenth century. Prior to Jones and Laughlin leasing the facilities built by the Defence Plant Corporation, several companies tried to mine the ore body but gave it up as uneconomical. While there is a little high grade (40%) magnetite, most of the ore contains 20 to 25% iron and not enough was known prior to World War II to design a profitable operation. By 1943, and certainly in the years that followed, technological developments in ore dressing and mining not only put the magnetite into the category of a commercial ore, but made possible the concentration of the non-magnetic iron mineral, martite. This last development nearly doubled the ore reserve. Jones and Laughlin bought the DPC holdings in 1946 and has since expanded the plant to its present capacity of 4,400 gross tons of concentrates daily or 1,600,000 gross tons per year. Magnetite makes up 62% of this production at the present time, but it will be necessary before long to bring martite production up to about 45% of the total because of the ratio of the two ores in the reserves. To keep the plant supplied, 14,000 to 15,000 tons must be mined and crushed daily, with a ratio of concentration that varies from 2.8 to 3.4. The ore body is 12,000 feet long and varies in width from 600 to 1,500 feet. The waste rock is, for the most part, a granite gneiss, and the overburden, of which little is left, is a glacial drift sand. For the entire reserve, there is a half ton of rock for every ton of concentrate, but the stripping ratio is more than one to one at present because of the existence of more rock in the upper mining levels in relation to the ore. The dirt stripping or development work that cannot be handled by company facilities is contracted to an outside firm. The need for this diminishes every year and will soon disappear. The deposit looks like a "J" in plan, with the long leg running approximately north and south and the short leg to the west. The primary crushing plant, consisting of a 54" gyratory followed by two 18" gyratories and a 1,500 foot conveyor belt to the fine crushers, is located on the third level where the long and short leg of the mine meet. The widest part of the pit lies just the north of the crusher. The mine is operated on a lease that expires in 199l0 There are two fee owners, the Benson Iron Company, which owns slightly overhlf of the reserves, and the Newton Falls Paper Company, which owns the balance. There is no appreciable difference in the mining on the two fees, so the ore is removed in strict proportion to calculated reserves during each year. Basic mining equipment consists of eight 45 yard electric shovels, a fleet of twenty-five 22 ton end dump trucks, eleven churn drills for nine inch blast holes, and two small percussion drills for four to five inch holes, There are the normal auxiliary items, such as dozers, graders, wagon drills, and two drop-ball cranes. Power is purchased and, where practical, is used at 4100 volts. Pit drainage pumps can handle a maximum of 11,500 GPM from the several sumps, but water is a problem only during the spring or when a sudden thaw follows a heavy snowfall.

Mining-related earthy bodies in contact with the atmosphere are now counted, generally, as minesoils. Because soils within this broad category are extremely young the influence of parent material is stronger than in older soils, where climate, organisms, and topography have had time to interact with near-surface rocks to form more distinctly differentiated profiles. Understanding of minesoil properties and processes is aided by definitions of rock types in terms of chemical, physical, and mineralogical characteristics that are, with some degree of consistency, translatable into soils. Geological correlations based on age or sedimentary sequences are helpful if they assure details of mineralogy and lithology, but our pedologic objectives demand that any conflicts involving rock types must be resolved in favor of distinctions having strongest implications for soil properties after mining. Chemically this approach emphasizes accounting of potential acid-base status, plant nutrient availability by adapted and calibrated extraction procedures, and absence of biotoxins. Physically it anticipates particle sizes, shapes, and arrangements in readily pervious soil profiles that will favor plant growth with desired levels of moisture and oxygen. Concurrently we are considering soil property suitability for uses other than growth of plants. Above all we need to be able to predict pedogenic processes in the particular environment, including rate as well as direction of chemical and physical change.

The characteristics of mine airstreams, such as their magnitude in the time and frequency domain and their spatial distribution, as defined by isovels, must be considered when making a measurement. The possibility for erroneous measurements is greatly increased when fixed- point sensors for mine monitoring systems are used. However, an a priori understanding of the airstream characteristics can be used to reduce the possibility of erroneous readings. This paper describes the problem, presents data to illustrate the nature of the problem, and provides recommendations for alleviating the problem.

In considering the importance of lease management and administration, I have decided to approach the topic, Lease Default and Eviction: Action or Reaction, as a three phase presentation dealing with mineral lease administration and management, past, present and future. Though the title may border on the dramatic, it illustrates the real consequences of alternative approaches to property management viewed from my experience in the evaluation, development and implementation of a number of such systems and services in my current position as president of Talco Group Corporation. First, though, let's take a moment and set the stage by giving a few actual examples of why a pragmatic approach is needed in this particular area.

The purpose of this paper is to provide a method for analyzing the sequencing of mining production processes and predicting the effects of any planned changes. Included is a description of the development and utilization of a project-scheduling simulation that combines analytical scheduling with stochastic-activity durations. The simulation is demonstrated in two realistic examples: a longwall face-to-face transfer sequence and the effect of varying advance rates on longwall development sections. Statistical data that can provide a basis for more informed production decisions are generated in the form of project activity/path criticality and project-duration distributions. In both examples, a quantitative risk assessment, regarding subjective decisions in underground production sequencing, is presented.

In the past 30 years, great advances have taken place in the development of tunnel boring machines, raise drills, large diameter drills and blind shaft borers that have revolutionized the shaft sinking and tunneling industries. Techniques for placing concrete linings, however, have not changed significantly during this period, and still constitute a stumbling block to the achievement of the rapid construction. In the past 5 years, Foster-Miller Associates, Inc. (FMA) has been involved with the development of a remotely operated shotcrete system for lining raise drilled shafts, an Extruded Tunnel Lining System (ETLS) for lining TBM bored tunnels, and a Continuous Shaft Lining System (CSL) for lining any type of machine bored shaft. This paper presents an overview of these three developments, including capabilities and limitations, a description of the concrete production, concrete placement, and advance rate, and control subsystems, a description of the concrete mix development required for each system, a discussion of test results to date, and an assessment of the state of development of each concept. Plans for future development will also be presented.
