An auxiliary cross-pit mining system, working in tandem with the prime excavator, is evaluated technically, operationally and economically for application in the selective removal and replacement of soils and unconsolidated ovezburden. Previous studies on cross-pit technology and applications of this technology are briefly reviewed. Stratigraphy plus pit, operating and economic parameters are assumed and applied in the evaluation and comparison of a base case dragline system with two alternatives - a dragline/scraper-dozer combination and a drag- line/cross-pit system combination. The economics of the proposed cross-pit system favour it as a viable alternative to conventional systems.

The term bauxite was first used by O.P.A.P. Dufrenoy in 1845 for an ore which was discovered by Pierre Berthier in 1821 near the village of Les Beaux de Provence near Arles in southern France. His data suggested that this mineral was an alumina hydrate with two molecules of water. However, it was subsequently shown by thermal analysis that the mineral was a fortuitous mixture of the mono-hydrate and the tri-hydrate. Diaspore had been previously discovered in 1801 and gibbsite in 1822. The term was however retained as a rock name. The name of the village was changed to Les Baux around 1885; Sainte Claire Deville suggested that the mineral name should reflect this, and it was changed to bauxite (Bracewell, 1962, Rkgnier, 1988). Mining of bauxite began around 1860 in the Auriol region in the Bouches du Rhine area in the south of France. This ore was transported toMarseilles by carts and was processed in the Salindres plant, which at that time was the only plant producing alumina using the Deville process and aluminum by the chemical process. During that period white bauxite (low iron content) was particularly sought after for the production of aluminum sulfate, refractory bricks, and quick setting cement. Export of bauxite from France began in 1880 and was initially delivered to Chemische Fabrik, Goldschmischen near Breslau, and to Guilini's Ludwigshafen plant in Germany in 1885. These companies produced alum and aluminum sulfate (RCg- nier, 1988). The next bauxite mining operation was in Antrim County in Northern Ireland in 1873. This was first used for the manufacture of alumina refractory bricks and quick setting cement (Bracewell, 1962). It is important to emphasize that initially almost all of the bauxite which was produced came from France and was mainly used for non-metallurgical purposes. At that time even the production of alumina was mainly for use as a mordant in textile dying. However, with the development of the Hall-Héroult process, the alumina which was available was increasingly used for smelting to aluminum. In spite of this the demand for non-metallurgical bauxite continued to increase and a set of applications were developed. These include refractories, abrasives (including the recently developed proppants), high alumina cements, aluminum chemicals, activated bauxite, and alumina. It became increasingly evident that the high alumina-low alkali raw materials have special advantages. The question however was one of cost benefit. Chin (1989) has pointed out that the non-metallurgical operations have been traditionally grafted on a bauxite/alumina/aluminum industry tree. New permit discharge standards instituted at Hecla Limited?s Lucky Friday Mine required installation of water treatment plants to manage water quality at two outfalls to the South Fork of the Coeur d?Alene River. The 002 Outfall Water Treatment Plant (WTP) is a clarification-filtration plant for treating the combined mill and underground discharge water flows. Process optimization efforts were a significant challenge until the negative impact the exploration diamond drilling products had on the clarification process was identified and resolved. The products were being wasted directly to the mine water discharge system which was pumped to the surface WTP. Anionic soluble oil and polyacrylamide based products were causing TSS particle hydrophobicity and dispersion that greatly affected coagulation and flocculation response, resulting in excessive chemical usage and treatment control issues. This paper details how problems associated with the drill products negatively impacted the 002 WTP and how system changes, alternative product usage and treatment at the source resulted in more consistent plant performance.

INTRODUCTION This presentation will address changing trade patterns in lead and zinc from the mid 1980's to the early 1990's. Lead and zinc deposits are developed where they are found in many parts of the world. As many are not in major consuming areas, there is significant international trade in both lead and zinc concentrates and in refined metal. Forecasts of mine production have been analyzed, primary and secondary refining capacity and future consumption levels have been estimated, to arrive at the changes in trade patterns expected during the next half decade. This paper will first address concentrate and metal trade patterns for lead, then for zinc, and finally some remarks will be made on captive mine/smelter agreements, on regional trade agreements, and on barriers to trade. I would like to note that. there is only a small international trade in semi-fabricated products such as zinc die-cast alloy, zinc oxide, lead oxide or rolled lead and zinc. Most of the world's zinc and lead trade is in concentrates or refined metal. LEAD TRADE PATTERNS Lead Concentrates Six countries are exporters of lead concentrates. Three countries are in the Americas - Canada, Mexico and Peru, with two in Africa - Morocco and South Africa (including Namibia), and Australia. Due to the limited growth in lead consumption and consequent minimum investment in new production facilities expected, mine and metal production levels and future consumption levels are not forecast to change much between now and 1990. Accordingly, the tonnage of lead concentrates exported will remain essentially unchanged from these six countries. In total they have exports of 480,000 metric tonnes (metal content)* and by 1990 this figure is forecast to rise only slightly with the only increase taking place in Mexico. The concentrates are exported mainly to Western Europe & Japan. Apart from these six main lead concentrate exporting nations, a significant change is expected in the United States. The large massive sulphide deposits present a formidable challenge to the economic geologist. They represent such huge concentrations of iron, sulphur, base metals and precious metals that it is difficult to conceive how they were derived from the crust or mantle of the Earth. The problem of the origin of massive sulphide deposits has generated a geological controversy which has lasted two hundred years and shows no sign of abating. The economic incentive to solve this problem is great, as the massive sulphide bodies are the moat important source of the world's zinc, lead, and silver, as well as yielding large amounts of copper and gold. Using the criteria of abundance, size, age distribution and gross value of contained metals, the predominant sub-group of the massive sulphide deposits is that which comprises the crudely conformable pyritic (or pyrrhotitic) deposits which occur in stratified volcanic and sedimentary rocks or their metamorphosed equivalents. Examples of this sub-group are: the Buchans, Bathurst, Noranda, Kidd Creek, Flin Plon and Sullivan deposits of Canada; the Mt. Isa and Broken Hill orebodies of Australia; the Cyprus, Rio Tinto, Meggen and Rammelsberg deposits of Europe; Ducktown and the United Verde in United States; and the Kuroko deposits of Japan.

PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT While Holmes & Narver is better known in other fields, the company has been active in many phases of underground excavation for over twenty years. In the 1950's, H&N participated in design and construction of nearly twenty miles of waste disposal tunnels in Southern California. As Architect-Engineer for the Atomic Energy Commission, we had design and management responsibility for many miles of tunnels and for thousands of feet of exploration and big hole drilling, from coast to coast in the States, and for gas well completions and exploration drilling for the Navy and the National Science Foundation from Pt. Barrow to Byrd Station in Antarctica. In my ten years with the company, we contributed to the development of big hole drilling techniques at a number of sites and analyzed the capability of boring machines for many of the tunnel projects. Over the years, electric utilities have been faced with declining steam-coal quality, rising coal prices, and increasingly rigid and costly environmental standards. As a result, many utilities are beginning to show an interest in coal cleaning to upgrade coal by improving its heating value and reducing its sulfur content. Among the primary questions that must be answered for these electric utilities is whether the cost of coal cleaning can be offset by the potential cost savings in coal transportation and utilization in power generation. In search of at least a preliminary answer to this question, the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) engaged Bechtel to perform a case-by-case economic study to examine the cost effects of using cleaned versus raw coal to fuel new electric power plants. The results of two of the seven cases studied which involved western coals - one from Montana and another from Utah - are reported in this paper. Coal cleaning appeared to be a cost effective option for the Utah coal, but only marginally economical for the Montana coal. These cost results are expected to change to favor coal cleaning to a greater extent with the application of the final revised New Source Performance Standards regulating SO2 emissions just issued by the EPA. The study was based on the regulation originally proposed by the EPA under the 1977 Clean Air Act Amendments.

[INTRODUCTION] The significance of gamma exposure to uranium miners has been recognized only in the last few years. Most ore deposits which have been underground mined, were 1% or less U308. Full-time mining of this grade ore can result in exposure exceeding 1 Rem per year. Several companies in Saskatchewan are planning to mine recently discovered ore bodies which contain ore pods in excess of 10% U308. The purpose of this paper is to present dose data which can be used to estimate gamma exposure from high-grade ore deposits, and to present mining techniques which will minimize miner exposure. [Dose Estimates] When one has a point source of radiation, the conventional laws of isotropic emission and the fall of dose with square of the distance, make dose calculations relatively easy. However, if one has an area source of infinite thickness, the assumption must be made that a uniform gamma flux is being emitted from all faces of the source (Figure 1). Dose from gamma emission would fall off only due to air attenuation up to such a distance at which the source can be considered to be a point source (usually 10 times the largest dimension of the source). For short distances, such as to the cab of ore-moving equipment, the dose reduction would be negligible. Assumptions: 1) Radium and gamma-emitting daughters are in secular equilibrium with uranium. 2) All gamma radiation is emitted from radium and its daughters. 3) Average gamma energy of 0.8 MeV. 4) Uranium ore has a linear attenuation coefficient of 0.212 cm-1, similar to that of Si02(sand). 5) Uranium ore density of 3.0 gm/cm3. 6) One curie of radium emits 6.84 x 1010 photon/sec(l). 7) One percent uranium ore contains 1 x 10-8 Ci/cm3 of radium. 8) Each MeV of 0.8 MeV photon results in a dose of 2.10[ ]10-3 mRem/hr. per MeV/cm2 -sec. 1) 9) Minimum ore depth 100 cm. 10) Linear attenuation coefficient instant for radium gamma of 0.374 cm -1 [ ] The photon flux from a radioactive slab is computed as follows: [Flux = photon/cm3 3(1) 2u S] [where, us is the linear absorption coefficient of s the source (uranium ore).] Thus, 1% uranium ore, in the form of an infinite slab, emits 1613 photon/cm2-sec, which results in a dose rate of 2.71 mRem/hr. A flowsheet for the recovery of nickel and cobalt from laterite ores was developed. The flowsheet involves acid leaching followed by hydroxide precipitation of the metal values and then releaching of the hydroxide cake with ammonia. Investigations of the chemistry of extraction of nickel by LIX® 84-I and a developmental reagent, XI-84-IT, along with the physical properties of the organic phases are described. Based on these investigations, suggestions with regard to design of a solvent-extraction plant and operating conditions were made.

Creede, one of the younger major mining camps in Colorado, grew spectacularly to a town of eight or ten thousand people in the early 1890's following discovery of rich ore in the Amethyst and Last Chance mines. Gross metal production in gold, silver, lead, copper and zinc rose to a maximum of four million dollars a year in 1893. Annual production dropped to much lower figures and ranged between one hundred and five hundred thousand dollars per year during the period from 1914 to 1940. Production reached a gross of eight hundred thousand to one million dollars per year by the mid-1950's. In the years 1953 to 1957, Steven and Ratté conducted geologic investigations which were carried on as part of a cooperative program of the U. S. Geological Survey and the Colorado Metal Mining Fund Board. In a preliminary report on the Creede District, Steven and Ratté suggested that the Bulldog Mountain Fault Zone appeared to be a favorable structure to prospect. On the basis of that recommendation, augmented by independent work done by Manning W. Cox, the property was acquired, transferred to Bulldog Mountain, Inc. and financed by an O. M. E. loan. Late in 1963 Homestake Mining Company, under a Lease and Option Agreement, backed the venture by furnishing additional funds plus management.

Atmospheric monitoring systems (AMS) are required when using air from conveyor belt entries to ventilate working sections in U.S. underground coal mines. AMS technology has the potential to increase fire safety mine-wide, but research is needed to determine the detection and response times for fires of a variety of combustible materials. To evaluate the potential of an AMS for fire detection in other areas of a coal mine, a series of full-scale fire experiments were conducted to determine detection and response times from fires of different combustible materials that are found in U.S. underground coal mines, including high- and low-volatility coals, conveyor belts, brattice materials, different types of wood, diesel fuel, and a foam sealant. These experiments were conducted in the Safety Research Coal Mine (SRCM) of the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) located in Pittsburgh, PA, using a commercially available AMS that is typical of current technology. The results showed that through proper selection of sensors and their locations, a mine-wide AMS can provide sufficient early fire warning times and improve the health and safety of miners.

The present work describes an investigation of a hydrometallurgical process for the recovery of mercury from spent silver oxide button cells. The cell paste was leached in nitric acid to solubilize silver, mercury and zinc. The optimum leaching conditions, in which mercury is entirely converted to Hg2+ ions and, therefore, does not co-precipitate with silver chloride during treatment with potassium chloride solution, were 1.0 M HNO3, 45° C, 1 hour and 200 rpm. After the silver was removed from the solution, mercury was cemented out with zinc powder with an efficiency greater than 99%. In the cementation experiments, the amount of zinc powder, shaking rate, temperature and solution pH were investigated in detail. The mercury recovery (%) increased as the amounts of zinc powder and the temperature were increased. Zinc hydroxide was precipitated from the waste solution by the addition of sodium hydroxide. The Zn(OH)2 precipitate was then converted to zinc oxide. The proposed process is proven to be simple, straightforward and environmentally friendly.

Research at the Albany Metallurgy Research Center has shown that high-purity rutile can be produced from relatively low-grade ilmenite obtained from a massive rock deposit. Ilmenite is first smelted in an electric-arc furnace to separate the iron and produce a slag enriched in titanium dioxide. Titania slag mixed with a phosphate flux is then oxidized to synthesize rutile and form a phosphate-glass matrix which contains the impurities. Attrition scrubbing the treated slag in dilute solutions of phosphoric or sulfuric acid liberates the rutile, which is concentrated by physical methods. Tests show that synthesized rutile containing 95 to 97 pct titania responds to chlorination at the same rate as natural rutile.

Heat transfer to a fluid flowing through a rough duct has been shown by many researchers to be a function of surface roughness. The effect of roughness asperities on the duct surface is to turbulate the fluid as it flows through the duct, increasing frictional pressure losses and convective heat transfer rates, and also increasing the surface area per unit length available for heat transfer. These factors combine to increase the total costs to the mine in terms of refrigeration and fan power requirements. A measurement system designed to automate the collection of tunnel roughness information and based on an infra-red timed pulse laser has been developed at the Royal School of Mines in London. The system allows accurate, high resolution digital recordings of tunnel surfaces to be made in two or three dimensions. Software for analysing the data has been written, and the description of a complex surface via single numerical term has been explored. A relationship between the numerically measured surface roughness and the pressure loss of the ventilating air is being investigated with a view to establishing an alternative method of describing tunnel roughness. The paper describes the roughness measuring technique developed and the analytical techniques explored so far.

In the comparison and consideration of synthetic and natural materials, graphites represent a situation in which natural graphites amount to less than 10% of the total carbon and graphite production by weight, and less than 5% in dollar volume, There are few applications where it could not be re- placed by synthetic graphite. On the contrary, synthetic graphite materials can be engineered to cover an extremely wide range of applications. These include electrographite brushes for rotating machinery, pyrolytic graphite, graphite-impervious pipe, nuclear moderators, high purity spectrographic graphite, power tube anodes, graphite rotary shaft seals, and rocket nozzles. The special qualities of natural graphite and its limitations are delineated and the almost unlimited possibilities in artificial graphite materials are discussed.

"Mining has always played a key role in the improvement of the quality of life, but also, it has been a source of environmental and social conflict. Despite the great progress in social responsibility and sustainability experienced in recent decades, the public image of mining remains low and mining projects and operations must face growing difficulties and demands, which results in increasing capital and operating costs. In practice, the objective of a mining company is to create value for its shareholders and therefore, the best approach to Sustainability would be to foster those drivers aligning sustainability and shareholders value, this is, the “Business Case for Sustainability” (BCS). Only under this assumption, convergence of corporate strategy and sustainability may be assured. This paper discusses partial results of a Research Project being carried out at the Catholic University of Chile, aiming to develop a social and economic model for the effective integration of the values of sustainable development in the strategy of mining companies and their stakeholders. INTRODUCTION Mining is fundamental for the wellbeing of our everyday life. But as important as these benefits are for humanity, the mining Industry has had negative environmental and social impacts. For these reasons, a closer relationship between “Sustainable Development and Mining” is more necessary than ever. The Brundtland definition of Sustainable development does not have a clear relationship with mining, but it provides the context. Under a strict interpretation of the Bruntlandt definition, stating that “Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs” [10], mining would not be sustainable because the minerals are non-renewable resources. However, this research focuses on how mining can contribute to the sustainable development in the territories where the projects take place. In other words, this research follows the publication titled “Berlin II Guidelines for Mining and Sustainable Development” [9], which stated that “A mining project that is developed, operated and closed in an environmentally and socially acceptable manner could contribute to sustainable development. Critical to this goal is ensuring that benefits of the project are employed to develop the region in a way that will survive long after the mine is closed”. The potential conflicts between mining stakeholders arises from the interpretation of the concept “developing, operating and closing a project in an environmentally and socially acceptable manner”, and the impact on the economic objectives of mining companies. Nevertheless, the ability of mining companies to control new demands and expectations of stakeholders has threatened the implementation and continuity of their projects and operations. To deal with these issues this research analyses the “Business Case for Sustainability” (BCS). It refers to the process leading to a business and social-economic environment whereby shareholders value may only be optimum under a business strategy which fully integrates the values of sustainability. In the model proposed, the Business Case will start when the benefits are higher than the costs. Benefits not only associated with efficient use of resources, also benefits associated with avoiding difficulties to continue with the mining projects such as strikes, heavy penalties, loss of investment, and so on."

Ground water can pose major engineering and environmental problems to the new generation of large, deep gold mines currently being developed throughout the world. It is important that the potential magnitude of these problems be assessed early in the planning of such projects and that any necessary dewatering and environmental remediation programs be designed at least preliminarily in the feasibility stage. The assessment should begin with acquisition of hydrogeologic data during exploration drilling and be followed by carefully designed and analyzed aquifer tests. Once a sufficiently detailed conceptual hydrogeologic model has been defined, state-of-the-art numerical models should be used to estimate ground-water inflows to proposed pits and underground openings, to design and evaluate the potential effects of various dewatering schemes, to define specific environmental impacts, and to predict pore pressures in highwalls relative to slope stability. The modeling results will indicate which method(s) of dewatering will be most effective both technically and economically. If wells are used, it is imperative that they be as hydraulically efficient as possible. There are new methods of drilling and completing dewatering wells that can help assure maximum efficiency.
