Tin has been one of the very few commodities which has been covered by an international commodity agreement. It is the only metal so covered. The reason behind tin's prediliction for an agreement has been the inconsistency of the price pattern for tin during the entire 20th century. It is not surprising in view - of the wide and wild fluctuations in its price that tin has been called the Cinderella metal. An examination, for example, of prices in 1977 alone attests to the erratic behavior of the tin markets. The high was recorded on October 27 at M$1,895 per picul and the low on January 3 at M$l,314 3/8, on the Penang market, a spread in Malaysian dollars of $581 for a picul weighing 133 1/3 pounds. The first steps in international cooperation on tin were taken after the price bonanza of the First World War. Despite a lack of increased consumption, and in spite of the fact there was no shortage of mining production during the war, prices boomed. Shipping shortages and thinning stocks brought about a situation where in the U.S., industrial stocks were only 1/6 of what they had been in 1914. The boom busted early. In 1921 the tinplate industry of the world had cut its output in half and total world consumption of tin fell by 1/3. Tin producers became so concerned that they created what was called the Bandoeng Pool. It accumulated stocks held by countries now known as Indonesia and Malaysia, amounting to 28 percent of the combined production of the two countries and about 15 percent of the total world for 1921. The pool holdings were shortly exhausted and thereafter in the years 1924 to 1928, general boom conditions existed for tin.

This study reviews and analyzes the empirical methods available for designing the capacities of coal mine gathering belts. The analyses lead to recommendations concerning the application and implementation of each empirical method. Operations research techniques, mainly simulation models, are also briefly mentioned, and a few recommendations are made concerning their selection and application. The objective of the study is to provide a reliable basis for the practicing engineer to properly select, apply, and implement a capacity design method.

The long hole open stoping (LHOS) method is widely used in underground mining. While methods to predict stable stope geometries are well established, the ability to maintain a stable back often assumes effective ground support across the full stope span. The efficacy of the support strategy is dependent on rock jointing, quality, density, top cut width and height, and the type, amount, and orientations of bolts installed. However, it is becoming increasingly common for operators to assume narrow top cuts in service of wider stope spans with minimal bolting coverage. Failure to account for the required top cut drift size and support requirements can ultimately lead to raveling type instabilities along stope shoulders that result in back collapse. A new method has been developed to evaluate the minimum top cut dimension necessary to accommodate wider stope spans with various rock bolting configurations. Due to the economic impacts of top cut development and support, this is a critical consideration in the accurate costing and scheduling of a LHOS operation. Tables 1 lists the acronyms are used throughout this paper.

New Zealand is a small, almost pristinely pure country environmentally speaking. It is blessed with an abundance of clear waterways, lush green vegetation and fresh clean air. It is a country in which agriculture and forestry predominate, and mining developments have to be introduced prepared to answer in considerable detail the question "How will this proposal affect the New Zealand environment as we know it today". Those who make the legislation have the difficult problem of establishing standards at a level which will maintain as far as possible the status quo without unduly inhibiting the developments currently approaching the starting line. We have been fortunate in some sense in that since the demise of the early gold rush days by the 1920's, little mineralisation of a complex nature has been uncovered in New Zealand. Coal fields have been developed in the central North Island, and on the West Coast and Southland regions of the South Island. A ban on large scale open cast mines in the Coromandel area has restricted mining in that highly prospective area, although three large gold prospects have got underway elsewhere in the last three years. There is no other ore processing being undertaken at present. Some recent proposals involving lead, gold and silver in complex arseno­ sulphides have failed to get the necessary approvals and have been discarded. Our ore processing problems are therefore straightforward ones, and confine themselves to acid drainage, mercury handling and disposal, and cyanide.

The explosion hazard presented by methane gas in coal is confronted daily in the mining industry. Research has developed several viable methods for gas control in addition to conventional dilution by ventilation. Such methods include the drilling of horizontal or cross-measure boreholes from a mine opening and vertical boreholes hydraulically stimulated in advance of mining or for gob gas drainage. The long-term production history of five gas drainage installations was studied. Three installations were completed in the Pittsburgh Coalbed: two in West Virginia and one in Pennsylvania. The remaining installations were completed in the Mary Lee Coalbed in Alabama and the Sunnyside Coalbed in Utah. The types of drainage methods utilized included horizontal and vertical boreholes. The length of production studied ranged from 860 days to 36 years. The cumulative production from the five sites was in excess of 155 Mm3, representing a significant volume of gas.

The importance of grinding as a unit operation in all industry has caused much effort to be expended toward improving the facility with which grinding can be done. Endeavor has continued nearly 100 years to formulate laws governing crushing and grinding. This has not been without controversy. However, grinding is an experimental science and our useful knowledge originates in experience. The recorded experience is grinding history. Today, many types of size reduction equipment, each with variations, are available to industry. Frequently, more than one type of grinding equipment will meet a requirement of grinding. However, an economic evaluation of installation and operating costs generally indicates a preferred type. The selection of grinding equipment requires' a consideration of the purpose in grinding, the characteristics of the material to be ground, equipment available for grinding, and the manner in which it can be applied best.

In 1971, United States Borax & Chemical Corporation (U.S.Borax) initiated a mineral exploration program on federal lands in Southeast Alaska, with the commitment that any possible development would be done with great care for the environment. This program resulted in the discovery of a molybdenum deposit and the location of mining claims in 1974, in an area 45 miles east of Ketchikan, now called the Quartz Hill Molybdenum Project (Figure 1). At the time of this mineral discovery, the area was part of the Tongass National Forest, managed by the Forest Service, United States Department of Agriculture, and open to mineral entry and multiple use. In late 1978, the area was designated Misty Fjords National Monument and closed to mineral entry, and in late 1980 the area surrounding Quartz Hill was classified as Wilderness. These new laws and regulations, as well as the special interest environmental groups which oppose resource development, have significantly delayed and increased the costs of developing Quartz Hill.

The City of Toronto's Coxwell Bypass Tunnel is currently being constructed by North Tunnel Constructors (NTC) ULC, a joint venture of Jay Dee Canada, C&M McNally Tunnel Constructors and Michels Canada. This project includes construction of approximately 10.5 km of 6.3 meter finished diameter rock tunnel, five 20 meter diameter storage shafts and eleven tunnel connection drop shafts, along with associated deaeration and adit tunnels. 120 m of Starter tunnel and 70 m of Tail tunnel were excavated with roadheaders to help with the launch of the TBM and as part of the contract base scope work. JayDee Canada in Collaboration with Everest Equipment Co. developed an innovative approach to design and build a stand-alone Ring Machine Erector nicknamed Enterprise to erect precast segmental lining in Starter and Tail tunnels in lieu of Cast-In- Place concrete. This paper describes the design and provides feedback on the innovative procedure used to install the rings.

WaterFlush Technology and WaterFlush crushing offers significant operational ben­efits in gold milling operations. WaterFlush crushing is the technology that Nordberg Inc. has developed, tested and proven in an actual operation during the 1980's. Patents have been obtained for both the process and the apparatus of implementa­tion. WaterFlush involves volumetric process controlled water flow into the ore feed cav­ity of a WF cone crusher. While the addition of water in itself is not new, the con­trolled amount of water coupled with the WF crusher operating parameters are revolution­ary. The WF crusher is a specially designed version of Nordberg's Omnicone crusher oper­ating at higher speeds, with a reduced ec­centric throw and higher horsepower capabil­ity. The results are increased capacity, higher crushing energy input and a finer crusher product. The WF crusher product is a slurry containing 40-60% solids by weight.

The solution of the dynamic population balance model (PBM) of a closed grinding network consisting of a mill, sump, and cyclone is problematic. The fact that the dynamic PBM model equation solution to the Inverse Problem for grinding systems is degenerate or underspecified is demonstrated. Two numerical solution approaches to the Inverse Problem are used. These are: 1) providing additional constraints on breakage selection functions or 2) performing the Arbiter-Bhrany (or other) normalization of the selection functions. Actual experimental anthracite batch grinding data is used to demonstrate the non-unique functionality of the batch dynamic mill selection and breakage functions for a real physical system. The Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm for systems of constrained non-linear equations is used to solve the batch dynamic PBM grinding equations to obtain the grinding selection and breakage rate functions. Different solutions to the same PBM transport equations are provided. The mill, sump and hydrocyclone were modeled as a CSTR operating at various retention times. Batch dynamic PBM data was used to provide the mill kinetic and breakage selection function data. Two different solutions were obtained depending on the numerical solution approach. The severity of the non-uniqueness problem for dynamic grinding is demonstrated. Each solution approach to a dynamic PBM with transport, while giving the same prediction for a single batch grinding time, gives different solutions or predictions for mill composition for other grinding times. This fact makes dynamic nodal analysis and control problematic. The fact that the constraint solution approach gives a solution may suggest that normalization for closed networks is not necessary. Differences in solutions to the PBM cannot be excused away by inaccuracies in the data used to model the grinding phenomenon.

Although there was a significant improvement in the world economy, recovery in the iron and steel industry followed its traditional pattern and lagged the general economic recovery in 1983. World crude steel production increased from 645 Mt (711 million st) in 1982 to 664 Mt (732 million st) in 1983, an increase of less than 3%. Domestic iron and steel production showed a modest increase over 1982. Weekly raw steel pro¬duction levels ranged between 1.5 and 1.75 Mt (1.6 and 1.9 million st) for the last 10 months of 1983, compared with less than 1.25 Mt (1.4 million st) for the last half of 1982. The peak was 2.5 Mt (2.7 million per st) per week in 1978-79. This how level of steel operations kept most pelletizing and sintering operations at curtailed production levels. Extended shut-downs of pellet plants were also common. Pressure by management to reduce operating costs has continued with an increasing emphasis on maintaining quality and efficient unit productivity. With the extended decline, there have been significant personnel reductions in both operating and headquarters staffs. Many companies are anticipating a long-term how growth period in the iron and steel sector. Pelletizing Domestic pellet production showed a slight increase last year to about 34 Mt (38 million st), less than 50% of total capacity. What is indicative of the inevitable is the announced intention to chose down facilities, such as US Steel Corp.'s Atlantic City ore operations pellet plant at Lander, WY, and the recent aborted move by US Steel to purchase National Steel with the apparent intent to chose the National pellet plant in Keewatin, MN. There is excess domestic pellet capacity that will not be needed. The question is what form attrition will take. South American pellets can be brought into the Chicago area at a cost competitive with Great Lakes plants. This raises the possibility that imported pellets can, in fact, displace domestic pellets at almost any US steel plant. The need to re duce total production costs at domestic pelletizing plants is crucial. Efforts to reduce fuel costs for pelletizing have focused on re placing natural gas or fuel oil with coal. More recently, petroleum coke has become available at an attractive cost, but systems must cope with its higher sulfur con tent, which limits its potential The direct firing of grate-kiln systems with pulverized coal hay been fully proven. The use of solic fuel in the straight-grate process however, is still being developer and no straight-grate system i running on solid fuel alone. The further development o coal-water slurry systems may provide a suitable fuel for both systems. It would appear, how ever, that the same ash quality restriction would hold for coal water systems as for direct-firin systems. So, the choice is based of the relative cost and convenience of a wet-grinding system with additives, compared with a dry-grind direct-fired unit. The high-temperature (two stage) heat recuperation system installed at US Steel's Minnta plant (Step III) has provided the fuel savings anticipated, any modification of additional in durating lines is planned. Other operators are hooking at similar heat recuperation improvement. Another area of potential cost savings has been in the reduction of bentonite requirements. A CCI's Tihden plant, major improvements have been made in this area. Progressive bentonit reductions were achieved over several years from the 8- to 9-kg (16- to 18-lb per st) range to the 5-k (12-1b) level by progressive moisture reductions and chose attention to operating practice. Surface subsidence events induced by underground longwall coal-mining operations can cause various disturbances to surface structures, ranging from integrity and stability to functionality problems. Highway bridges, as a kind of special road construction that can only tolerate smaller movements and deformations than road pavements, are particularly susceptible to severe influence caused by subsidence-induced ground movements and deformations. However, based on accurate subsidence prediction and correct influence assessments, efficient and effective mitigation and remediation measures can be designed and implemented to ensure the continuous service of bridges, safety of travelers, and smooth mining operations. In this paper, based on the predicted final and dynamic surface movements and deformations, the techniques to assess subsidence influence on the integrity, stability and functionality of bridge structures (such as decks, beams and abutments) are presented. A number of mitigation measures to protect bridge structures are recommended, along with an actual application case.

With its 2011 acquisition of rival equipment company Bucyrus International, Caterpillar added underground mining and large shovels to its line of products and further solidified its standing as the leading mining equipment manufacturer in the world with solutions for every aspect of mining. When Caterpillar spent $8.8 billion to acquire Bucyrus, the global mining business was flourishing, as mining companies around the world worked to keep up with demands for nearly every commodity. Flash forward to 2013, and the global mining landscape looks very different. Lower demand for raw material from China and India and falling commodity prices have forced most mining companies to pull back on their production. The reductions from the mining industry have hit equipment makers like Caterpillar and Komatsu hard. In October, Caterpillar reported that its quarterly earnings had fallen 44 percent. The changing conditions have also changed the narrative from Caterpillar and other equipment makers to customers from offering solutions to move the most tons per hour, to now offering solutions for the lowest cost per ton. The tempo of air pollution control regulations has increased dramatically in the past few years. Because coal mining operations are frequently located in remote areas away from urban developments, specific regulations applying to coal mines have received lower priority and are thus only now being promulgated and/or enforced. Therefore, many mine operators are not yet familiar with the regulations and the impact upon their method of operations. Few have been faced with an inspector on the property sighting them for specific violations. Several of the Mid-western states are just now requiring permit applications to be submitted.

The article presents the concept of the application of the Finite Element Method (FEM) and ABAQUS software in the global monitoring of changes in the rock mass and on the surface of the area, as a result of backfilling the workings. Waste materials applied for stabilizing old mining workings can have a strong influence on the rock mass and surface. According to the regulations, this process should be carefully monitored, especially in terms of the safety of surface structures and rock mass stability. The article presents the concept of an analytic and graphic presentation of the results of the measurements of old workings, applying the Finite Element Method and ABAQUS software in model studies. The main purpose of such interpretation of the geodetic observations results is the application of methods providing wide possibilities to present the geometry of workings, their changes and the influence of the rock mass and surface.

In order to develop the pulsating high gradient magnetic separation technology, a type of laboratory pulsating high gradient magnetic separator (PHGMS) has been manufactured. Experiments of its separating performance were carried out. They show that PHGMS can significantly increase the grade of the magnetic product and avoid the matrix to be blocked. The characteristic curve of the pulsating fluid was measured and a formula for estimating the grade of the magnetic product was established in PHGMS.

A new face ventilation system was needed at the Allied Chemical Trona mine, near Green River, Wyoming. The development of an exhaust manifold face ventilation system came from a need to reduce the dust and noise concentration level while maintaining methane control at the continuous miner working face. Dust laden air from a heading being driven by a continuous miner was contaminating the intake air in the mine around the roof bolter operator and adjacent headings. Each working heading was exhausted into the last open crosscut by a face fan. A face fan would contaminate the adjacent downstream heading with dust-laden air until a high dust concentration developed in the final entry before the returns. A face ventilation system was needed to give the exhaust of each heading an individual path to the return air. In addition, the system could not interfere with the present room and pillar mining process. A manifold system of rigid duct ventilation tubing was designed using the existing fans in a parallel arrangement. Each system was to consist of the rigid duct tubing in three headings junctioned together at the last open crosscut and exhausted at a common branch in the return air. Each heading was to have its own damper (or valve) so that air could be directed where it was most needed. The system was installed using both round and oval rigid duct ventilation tubing to minimize head loss and to allow proper ground clearance for mining machinery. Two fans in parallel were used to exhaust three headings. By adjusting the valves at each heading, up to 18.0 kcfm (9.36 cu m per sec) could be exhausted from one heading and still keep the methane level controlled in the other two headings. The manifold exhaust system has proven to be an efficient, long lasting ventilation system at the Alchem Mine. It has reduced the dust and noise exposure levels at the working faces while keeping the methane level under control.

"The mining industry has recognized the advantages of high density backfill or ‘paste’, which is typically pumped with a hydraulically driven piston pump. Due to the discontinuous flow of this type of pump, pressure pulsations can occur in the discharge line. Pressure pulsations are an undesired phenomenon in pumping installations for a number of reasons that include: damage to the pumping system; piping and supports; disturbing noise levels; and even safety risks for operators and maintenance personnel.This paper describes an advanced system on the GEHO® piston pumps, which will prevent virtually no pressure pulsations from occurring, rather than merely reducing the already existing pulsations.INTRODUCTIONThe first GEHO® hydraulically driven piston pump was developed in the mid-1970s. It was an industrial design pump designed to operate in the high-standard industrial environment with regards to operating hours per day, duties, maintenance and lifetime of the pump and spare parts. This type of pump has a proven track record and has been further developed for the type of applications that we are describing today. The special feature of this pump type is its ability to pump extremely viscous slurry with solids content of up to 90% by weight, at high pressures. Typically, in the mining industry, this pump is used for tailings transportation, with a focus on mine backfill and is often referred to as a paste pump.In the 1980’s the hydraulically driven piston pump made its entry into the application of mine backfill, thanks to the high discharge pressure capabilities enabling the mines to pump higher density (i.e. higher solids concentration) slurries and pastes over longer distances.Part of the ongoing development was (and still is) the increase in discharge pressure and flow capacity to comply with the ever growing demands for high power piston pumps. In line with the technological developments and increase in performance duties, the popularity of this pump type increased significantly and many other industrial applications have discovered the benefits of this pump type.Together with the increase in pump discharge pressures and flow capacities the effect of an undesired phenomenon also increased: the phenomenon of pressure pulsations. Before we explore this subject in more detail it is important to first understand the design and the characteristics of a hydraulically driven piston pump."

As the program says -we'll he talking about the expectations of the Management of an Industrial Mineral enterprise relative to the activities of geologists engaged in that enterprise. Industrial Minerals is such a large industry both in tons produced and in value of product -and of such diversity and complexity of participating enterprises, minerals and products that I doubt if anyone person can speak for the entire industry as to the expectations of management with respect to the geologist. I'm sure there are major differences in emphasis between segments of management as to the relative importance of the different aspects of the geologists' role in the scheme of things. However, we will try to generalize concerning what we consider to be important factors and to be more specific perhaps of some of the factors with which we have had direct assessable experience.
