This presentation will represent a diversion from the central theme of Cordilleran geology, in both time and space, as we move 2,000 miles east of Spokane to eastern Canada, specifically the province of Quebec, to discuss a major new Archean-age volcanogenic massive sulphide deposit called Louvicourt. The deposit is located in the Val d'Or camp in the prolific Abitibi Greenstone Belt some 400 miles north of Montreal. It was discovered by Aur Resources in June, 1989 on a property operated under the terms of a joint venture with Louvem Mining, a Quebec company controlled by Ste. Genevieve Resources Inc. of Montreal. As a geologist, I am proud to be able to describe Louvicourt as a geological discovery, as it was found by doing systematic deep diamond drilling based on a geological concept. The deposit is essentially blind from surface and lay undiscovered for the 10 years that the Louvem mine was in production just 2,000 feet away from its easternmost workings.

Vibration screens are commonly used not only in classifying bulk material but also in dewatering it. The lack of a comprehensive physical theory of dewatering often leads to difficulties in the design and operation of the vibration screens. Firstly, the dewatering of bulk material will be shown, based on a physical model. Because of the oscillatory motion of the liquid in the bulk, the inertial force of the accelerated liquid and the dripping of water out of the bulk or screen must be taken into special consideration. The physical model put forward shows the effect of the various operations parameters of dewatering screens. The comparison between dewatering theory and practice will be shown by measurements using coal, limestone, etc. Dewatering measurements, which have been conducted on a vibration screen, demonstrate that different vibration frequencies and rates of acceleration lead to different residual moistures. Finally, the possibilities of improving vibration dewatering will be described.

The United States has the largest total (364 billion metric tons) and recoverable (182 billion metric tons) coal reserves in the world.1 However, progressive coal utilization in this country has been hampered by environmental constraints, such as restrictions on sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and particulate emissions. New technologies are being pursued both to appease these environmental concerns and improve economic performance and process efficiency. These technologies, however, have not reached the level of effectiveness required for optimum operation. If more stringent emission standards are imposed, it is likely that the coal industry, and the industrial and utility sectors will look increasingly toward the successful development of new and advanced coal cleaning technologies in order to continue and promote the use of coal in this country. The EPA New Source Performance Standards In 1979, the Environmental Protection Agency in response to the amendments to the Clean Air Act of 1977 issued new source performance standards (NSPS) for utility and industrial boilers. The NSPS set emission standards for sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and particulates affecting boilers of 250 MM Btu per hour heat input or 'greater that started construction after September 1978. Plants starting construction or in operation before September 1978 remained subject to the provisions of the regulations promulgated in 1971, i.e., SO2 emissions of 1.2 15/MM Btu. The NSPS for SO2 emissions provides a sliding scale for SO2 reduction depending on the sulfur content of the run-of-mine coal, with an upper limit of 1.2 lb of SO2 per million Btu and a minimum emission level based on 70% SO2 removal. Table 1 summarizes the EPA NSPS for SO2 emission standards.

This is an introductory paper on a new method of prospecting for mineral deposits which has been developed by Scintrex Limited. The method, which we call Luminex, for luminescent mineral exploration, is based on time- resolved mineral luminescence created by an ultraviolet light source. It has the ability to detect and resolve a group of key minerals which are either ore minerals themselves, or more often, are accessory or pathfinder minerals for certain types of economic ore deposits. Fortunately, these minerals are commonly found at the earth's surface, even in areas of considerable weathering. The method extends the range of mineral deposits which are remotely detectable from the air to include those such as tungsten, tin, molybdenum, gold and bedded lead-zinc deposits and, is therefore, a natural supplement to our three classical methods of airborne geophysics.

Rare-earth elements have some unique properties that are used in many common applications, such as TV screens and lighters. In the 1970's, rare-earths began to be used in a new generation of magnetic materials that have very unique characteristics. Not only were these stronger in the sense of attraction force between a magnet and mild steel (high induction, B), the coercivity (He) is extremely high. This property makes the magnetization of the magnet body composed of a rare-earth element alloy very stable, i.e., it cannot easily be demagnetized.

The current economic downturn has been at the center of media attention for several years. Today, the mining and mineral sectors are being impacted by highly fluctuating supply-and-demand conditions, extreme price volatility and tremendous market uncertainty on a world-wide basis. There have been numerous plant closings, project cancellations and employee layoffs. In this gloomy economic environment, it is easy to forget that the world?s gross domestic product (GDP) has more than doubled in real terms during the last 30 years. While current market turbulence may continue for some time, the long-term trend is unmistakably upward. Living standards are rising all over the world, thereby creating demand for food, clothing, transportation and housing. This translates into tremendous demand for the mining and mineral sectors. In the future, new capacity and plant expansions will be necessary to meet this need. These investments, which typically have a life span of 30-plus years, will have to be based on long-term economic considerations rather than current market conditions.

There are two aspects of financing western coal development -- whether there is going to be enough money to finance the prospective large development of the industry, and the specific techniques of raising money for that development. To take the first question of whether there is going to be enough money around to finance your industry, I think it is quite clear that the restrictions on the development of western coal are going to be non- financial. Environmental impact problems are creating the greatest delay in coal mine development, at the moment; but getting enough personnel, mining equipment, railroad equipment, and failure of the Department of Interior to act on leasing federal coal lands all appear likely to create significant bottle- necks in the development of western coal -- larger bottlenecks than financing. Financing appears straightforward for the industry. There are many projections of the financing required to meet Project Independence goals. The National Academy of Engineers estimated that development of 500 million tons per annum of western coal would be necessary by 1985 to meet the Project Independence goals which might require $20 billion of capital spending. It is generally agreed that 500 million tons a year is not a realistic possibility. Carl Bagge?s estimate of production of 250 million tons a year by 1983 appears a more reasonable projection. Sulfuric acid mist is an undesired by-product of the copper electrowinning process, caused by oxygen evolution at the anode which entrains droplets of the acidic copper electrolyte solution. As the oxygen moves to the surface of the cell, these droplets become aerosolized resulting in acid mist. The addition of chemical anti-misting agents to the copper electrolyte is a common mitigation technique. This paper details Syensqo’s laboratory development of a new environmentally friendly acid mist suppressant, ACORGA® EW98. The product exhibits excellent acid mist suppression and it is fully compatible with the adjacent solvent extraction process. Lab and pilot test results are reviewed ahead of future planned industrial trial testing.

Generally, production planning is concerned with the best use of fixed resources to determine a production schedule for one or more production units supplying one or more markets. Production scheduling determines when each production unit will be used and its production level. However, the production scheduling problems are intimately associated with the location of existing or new production units and processing facilities. Normally, mine location allows only a limited choice; processing plant types and locations are considerably more flexible. This paper presents a generalized multiperiod MIP model as an aid in determining the mine production schedule and the processing plant types and location to satisfy multiple markets. A brief description of MIP and how it has been applied in the mineral and other industries is discussed. A complete description of the model with an application to a coal preparation plant system is presented.

New developments have occurred in Wyoming's industrial minerals industry since the 32nd Forum on the Geology of Industrial Minerals in Laramie, Wyoming in 1996. The soda ash trona and bentonite industries have experienced overall growth. Gypsum and limestone production have remained constant, but have the potential for dramatic growth. The mining of zeolite ceased in 1997. The struggling dimension stone industry has increased production, but development has lagged behind the schedule predicted in 1996. The construction of a container glass plant and associated production of glass raw materials, as predicted in 1996 and imminent in 1998, is now on hold due to unforeseen market factors. Increases in railroad and highway construction have, and will, greatly increase the production of construction aggregate for local uses. An iron carbide industry, not foreseen in 1996, is in the planning stages.

Prediction of excavation rates is a critical element in the pre-planning of a tunnel boring machine (TBM) project. A realistic evaluation of performance expectations is needed that reflects both the knowns and unknowns of the excavation process and geologic conditions. Current planning procedures are often based on deterministic “best guess” estimations. In this paper, a probabilistic approach to performance simulation is presented that will permit rational consideration of general and project-specific uncertainties in establishing realistic performance estimates. Companion to the simulation software is a database of over 600 public-domain case histories.

The concept of mobile crushers is not new. Since their introduction about twenty-five years ago, mobile crushers have continued to gain widespread attention. Mobile crushers reduce minerals in the open pit mine to sizes which can be transported by belt conveyors thereby reducing or eliminating the need for truck haulage. Truck haulage is costly, often representing as much as 50% of the total mining cost. More than 80% of the cost of truck haulage is for fuel and lubricants, tire replacements, and operators' wages, and it can be anticipated that the cost of these items will continue to increase at a steady pace. Compared to truck haulage, transportation by belt conveyor is more energy-efficient, less labor-intensive, and less subject to inflation. Therefore, mobile crushers, used in conjunction with belt conveyor systems, offer one of the most effective available methods of reducing energy consumption and mining costs,

The difficulties encountered in justifying replacements for over-age mobile mine equipment at the Gay Mine are common to most mining operations. More critical management reviews, resulting from ever rising capital expenses, increased such difficulties. These increased difficulties are especially apparent to those who are primarily operators and are not statisticians, mathematicians, or computer oriented. The Gay Mine is located 17 miles east of the town of Fort Hall in southern Idaho. This open pit operation annually supplies the J. R. Simplot Company and the FMC Corporation with 1.5 MM - 2.0 MM tons of phosphate ore. Stripping ratios average approximately three bank cubic yards of waste per ton of ore mined. The mobile mine equipment fleet consists of ten 24 yard scrapers; twenty-one 30-50 ton end dump trucks; four 32 42 yard shovels; fifteen dozers in the D-8 and D-9 classes; and three road patrols. Equipment replacement is based on the results of evaluations made on individual units. Authorization of capital expenditures for equipment replacement is dependent upon a favorable profitability index (true rate of return on investment) plus a favorable payout time. The system is based on cash flows and requires the determination of (1) the net cash outflows in the form of capital expenses plus (2) the expected cash inflows resulting from reduced expenses and depreciation tax credits. After adjustments for taxes and the time value of money, the net amounts are used to calculate the required indices. The basic elements for the system related to the replacement of mobile mine equipment include: (1) the determination of dollar penalties to be expected from the continued use of aging equipment; (2) the selection of equipment that will provide the greatest return on the investment dollars; (3) the quantification of the expected savings; and (4) the calculations of the prescribed indices. Electric drives hire done outstanding job in many-fields that are related to the mining industry. The equipment that is offered for electric-trucks was developed from the traction equipment which is used on the diesel electric locomotive. Rotating equipment available for use on electric trucks is identical in principle to that which is used on these locomotives. In as far as it is practical, similar controls are used. Another descendent of the diesel electric locomotive can be found in the oil well drilling industry, Here, locomotive traction motors and. electric controls have been modified to fit the particular requirements of the drilling industry, One 2400 H.P. diesel electric drilling rig drilled a 24,000 Ft. well in West Texas with an electrical maintenance cost in the order of 7¢ per hour This was a new rig and the costs are less than the average maintenance costs will be for the life of the equipment, Even soy since it took one (1) year to drill this well, this 7¢ per hour has real significance. Electric shovels use a similar type of electrical equipment; they too have shown real savings over the equipment they replaced. Since electric drives have done so well, in other fields, they warrant consideration for use in high horsepower, large capacity trucks.

The Bureau of Mines is conducting research to boost domestic production of manganese. Virtually no mining exists in the low grade and/or small deposits that occur in this Country. One large, low-grade manganese deposit located in westcentral Arizona--The Artillery Peak district--was extensively studied and sporadically mined during the 1940's and 1950's. Although manganese mining in the district has been long dormant, recent studies indicate that the deposits may be amenable to economical production by heap and/or in situ leaching methods. A conceptual design for an in situ leaching system features undercutting and blasting a block of ore, leaching with SO2, and extracting the manganese as a sulfate or oxide. Possible applications to other manganese deposits depend upon formation permeability and specific manganese mineralogy.

Most primary-molybdenite producers use a selective-flotation process in which molybdenite is floated from the ore while other sulfide and non-sulfide gangue minerals are depressed in the same step (Figure 1). The process was developed at the Climax mill. Reagents used in the rougher-flotation stage include vapor oil (collector), syntex (surfactant), pine oil (frother) and occasionally sodium cyanide and Nokes reagent (depressant). Rougher concentrate is upgraded by cleaner flotation to produce market-grade molybdenite concentrates. Reagents used in the cleaner flotation stage are Dowfroth 250, vapor oil, sodium cyanide and Nokes reagent. The development of the flotation reagent scheme at Climax and the role of the reagents have been well described by Born, et al, (1976) and Malhotra, et al, (1976, 1977a, 1977b, 1977c, 1980). The hydrocarbon collector, vapor oil, accounts for approximately 50 percent of the total molybdenite-flotation reagent cost. Because vapor oil sources are limited, and the cost of vapor oil has increased significantly over the last decade, several studies have been done to evaluate alternate oil-based collectors and/or blends of collectors which would produce similar metallurgical results at a reduced cost, or increase the overall molybdenite recovery at the same cost (Smit and Bhasin, 1983; Hahn, 1969; Smith and Bhappu, 1971). The approach taken in the present study was to evaluate alternate non-oil based collectors and collector systems that are less expensive than vapor oil.

The Office of Coal Research has been supporting the development of processes for producing synthetic pipeline gas from coal since 1964. .Some of this work has also been jointly supported by the American Gas Association. The work has progressed through laboratory investigation, to bench scale, to pilot plant. It was far from a crash program, generally being fund-limited.. As of one year ago, we had reached the following position: 1. The Institute of Gas Technology HYGAS. process pilot plant in Chicago, Illinois, was in the process of being finally completed. This plant is designed to produce about 1,500,000 cubic feet of pipeline-quality gas per day from 75 tons of coal. 2. The Consolidation Coal Company, CO2 Acceptor Process pilot plant in Rapid City, South Dakota, was well._ on its way to completion. This plant, designed primarily for lignite and subbituminous coals, has about one-half the design capacity of the HYGAS plant. Additionally, the initial construction did not provide for cleanup and methanation; only the preliminary synthesis gas is produced. 3. The Bituminous Coal Research, Inca, BI-GAS pilot plant was in a preliminary design stage. A site had been selected near Homer City, Pennsylvania, to build this plant, planned to consume 120 tons of coal per day. Meanwhile, as you are all well aware, a natural gas shortage was developing in this country. Much has been published about it, so I will not. bother you with further details. Cable bolts are used as a means of rock support around underground excavations in many mines across Canada and around the world. A substantial body of research on cable bolting was conducted at a number of Canadian universities and mines from the mid-1980s through the 1990s. Since then, research into selected areas of cable bolting practice has continued in Canada. The research has focussed on cable bolt instrumentation and on the inclusion of cable bolts in empirical stope design techniques. A review of cable bolting practice is now warranted at many mines. It has been five years since the completion of the previous substantial body of Canadian academic research and the associated advancement in understanding of cable bolt design, implementation and verification practice. Attempts were made at that time to transfer the new design procedures and performance assessment technologies to mine-site personnel. In some cases, this was effective, and ground control personnel continue to improve on their cable bolting practice at each specific mine site. However, at other sites, experienced people have moved on, and the new, less experienced personnel do not have access to the training or technical resources required to improve their understanding of the subject. In other cases, the technology was not transferred effectively to practitioners, with the result that substantial improvements can be made to the cable bolting practice at those mines. Guidelines for auditing cable bolting practice are provided in this paper. The guidelines include a discussion of the objectives of the audit, suggestions for audit procedure and a summary of the possible outcomes of a cable bolt audit. The objectives of an audit might include assessing the reasons for unexpected cable bolt failures, evaluating the quality of the installation procedures, quantifying the efficiency of the cable bolt system and assessing training requirements and procedures. A cable bolt audit should include consideration of all aspects of the cable bolting cycle, including the design, implementation and verification phases of the operation. At the end of the audit, a ranking should be assigned to the components of the cycle. The ranking system can then be used to identify items that require immediate attention, others that could be improved and others that are adequate. Following completion of a cable bolt audit, increased confidence in the support system and its application is generally, found, along with the potential for cost savings in many cases.
