The Ozarks has been called "a diamond in the rough". In this region streams have steep gradients, sparkling clear flows of cold water fed by many springs, and a wildness that is almost unique in the central part of the United States today. The Current River and its tributary, Jacks Fork, have been set aside for preservation by the National Park Service as a "Wild River" in the first park of its kind in the country. It is called the Ozark National Scenic Riverway. Similarly, responsibility for the preservation of the Eleven Point River has been assigned to the U. S. Forest Service. Protection of other streams in the Ozarks has been considered by State agencies. The hydrologic system of the Ozarks is a complex network of gaining and losing streams, caves, conduits, and large springs. Increased sewage loads derived from the growing towns and expanding tourist trade are a potential hazard; effluents may flow underground for long distances, polluting springs and wells. To add another dimension to the hydrologic picture a new lead industry is also flourishing in the Ozarks. Although the history of lead mining in the area goes back to 1701 (U. S. G. S., p. 43), the area has not seen a revitalization like the one that has been developing in the last 10 years; and the economic growth promises to continue indefinitely. Although this brings capital expenditures and wages into the area, it also brings potential hydrologic problems. Chemicals, wastes and other substances either stored on the surface or transported across it are subject to accidental spillage. In an area where these substances remain on the surface their effects are subject to surveillance. In the Ozarks, however, this may not be possible.

The kaolinite presence in bauxite ores increases caustic soda consumption during the digestion step in the Bayer process. Depending on the kaolinite content, the utilization of the ore in the Bayer process may be unfeasible. This investigation addressed the variables involved in kaolinite flotation through microflotation experiments in a Hallimond tube and zeta potential determinations. The tests were performed with a pure sample of kaolinite (96%). Five collectors were tested: Duomeen T (DT), cetyl pyridinium chloride (CPC), cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), dodecylamine (DDA) and Flotigam EDA (EDA). Four of them performed well as collectors, at a concentration of 1x10-4 mol/L: CPC, CTAB, DDA and EDA. The kaolinite isoelectric point (IEP) was determined at pH = 4.6. The IEP was shifted towards higher pH values in the collectors? presence, indicating specific adsorption onto the mineral surface.

Estimated costs and revenues can be used in the evaluation of post- mining land use alternatives. However, post-mining land use decisions have to be made in an environment complicated by several additional factors. These factors, including cultural, natural, and managerial issues, are not as easily quantified as costs and revenues but may be more important determinants. There- fore, some approach is needed to attach relative weight to the various factors. The concept of fuzzy sets assembled into a structured hierarchy facilitates analysis of the relative value of individual factors and their impact upon each alternative under consideration. In this paper, a method is presented which employs fuzzy set analysis to evaluate postmining land use plans on the basis of these nonquantitative factors.

Understanding the variability of sulfur and calorific value in coal seams is critical to planning mining operations and marketing the mined coal. In this study, statistical and geostatistical techniques were used to explore the underlying spatial trends present in a large coal deposit. Eight prediction models for the sulfur content of the coal seam were developed. Six of the models were created using geostatistical techniques, while the remaining two models were created using other techniques. The performance of each model was examined by conducting cross validation exercises. The results of the study showed that very pronounced trends and anisotropies were present in the sample data, which had to be accounted for in the modeling. The study found that a cokriging model using sulfur and ash is the best prediction model for predicting sulfur content in this coal reserve.

Forecasting mined grade variability from exploration information is a challenging task in mine planning. For effective planning of activities such as workplace scheduling, ore grade quality control etc. development of realistic numerical/simulation models of in-situ variability from exploration information is an essential first step. Geostatistical conditional simulation (GCS) is one of the well known methods to develop these simulations. Recently, stochastic fractal models based on the assumptions of scale-in variance and self-similarity have been used for developing simulations of several natural phenomena. It has been suggested that these models might permit generation of short-scale variability information from exploration data with greater fidelity when the data satisfies the attendant assumptions. In this paper the stochastic fractal models are reviewed and their relationship to geostatistical variogram models is examined. A comparison of the two simulation techniques has been per-formed using coal sulfur data from a mined out coal property. The results of this comparative analysis are also presented in the paper.

The development of Vitrokele™ Technology over the last 10 years is reviewed with reference to mine site piloting and com­mercial applications. The first mine site piloting was conducted in Australia in 1989 followed by a further six continuous site trials in Australia, Canada and the USA. These major pilot plant studies are complemented by over 50 laboratory scale batch and pilot testwork programmes. The first commercial plant using Vitrokele™ Technology was the Connemara project commissioned in Zimbabwe in 1995. Subsequent to this, three commercial scale projects have been designed using Vitrokele™ to recover precious metals, base met­als and cyanide. The various projects are discussed with relation to the differ­ing flowsheets applied to each particular case.

This 1988 survey provided a cross section of computer software use by the US coal industry. From 1250 mailed questionnaires, 171 responses were received, representing a 4.9% sampling of the 3496 US coal mines. Since the distribution of responses by regional stratum matched well with the distribution of mines by stratum, the survey was given statistical validity. A statistical description details the computer use by region, mining type, organizational size, the level of application within the organization, the type of software application used, the variety of computers on which the software was used and the percent of users within engineering, management and general applications categories. Overall, 63.5% of the respondents use computers at some level in their organizations. All of the mines producing more than 454 kt/a (500,000 stpy) used computers. However, for those producing more than 9 kt/a (10,000 stpy) but less than 91 kt/a (100,000stpy), only 44% used computers. Generally, the software applications were still data-processing oriented. The application sophistication grew with increasing mine size. Computer system models and configurations for different sized organizations are recommended based on the configurations used in the industry at the time of the survey.

Mining operations such as grinding, classifying, separating and concentrating minerals all have pumps at the heart of the operations Special purpose pumps such as dewatering, process water and slurry pumps are at the heart of many of these processes. Unfortunately the pumps themselves are often overlooked in terms of energy savings potential as they are often embedded into these sophisticated processes which are the ultimate operational focus.

In the last ten years the U.S. coal industry has experienced the collapse of several large silos. In addition, other problems such as extensive structural damage, small "live" capacities, inadequate feed rates, arching, coreholes, and particle segregation have been common to the industry. This paper explains the relationship between those problems and stored material properties, silo hopper configuration, silo structural design, and granular flowability. Methods of identifying, repairing, and/or modifying damaged silos, and designing new silos are given.

The Copper Canyon Cu-Au-Ag deposits include two geologically distinct hypogene ore bodies developed primarily in late Paleozoic rocks adjacent to a 38-m.y.-old potassic-altered granodiorite, whose emplacement seems to have been controlled largely by the Virgin fault, a north-striking normal fault. Widespread but subeconomic concentrations of sulfides as fracture and cavity fillings in skarn apparently preceded the final intrusion of the granodiorite. In the west ore body, metals reached ore-grade concentrations through the massive replacement of andradite by chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite, and pyrite mineral assemblages. The east ore body probably formed after the granodiorite reached its present level. Calculated 6dD values of water in equilibrium with primary and secondary biotites range from -76 to -99 per mil at temperatures indicated by d180 values from coexisting quartz and biotite. The lightest values are in secondary biotite from the east ore body. These data suggest that fluids associated with potassic alteration here were most likely composed of magmatic water mixed with some meteoric water.

On behalf of my agency, the Mine Safety and Health Administration, I would like to add my appreciation that all of you could be here today. Previous dust symposia over the years have proved the value of close cooperation among universities, government agencies, and professional societies in advancing knowledge of dust research and development in the interest of miners and the industry. I'll just comment briefly on MSHA's part of the overall effort by all parties to control miners' exposure to respirable coal dust and other airborne dusts. As you know, our agency's congressional mandate is to do what is necessary to assure that miners will have safe and healthful workplaces. In the area of coal mine health, this has meant joining with the mining community in a continuous campaign to keep respirable dust and quartz levels below applicable standards to prevent or reduce disabling coal workers' pneumoconiosis and silicosis arising from excessive exposure to respirable quartz. Currently, our agency is processing about 120,000 coal dust samples taken by MSHA and company people during the year and about 8,000 samples taken from metal and nonmetal mining operations. Our dust program, like other MSHA programs, has benefited from increased computerization of records. The attack on CWP has had the highest priority of government and industry. The goal has been to sharply reduce social costs of suffering victims and their families as well as the associated future payments under the black lung benefits program. During the 1989 fiscal year, about 104,000 former miners received about one and a half billion dollars in benefits. Since the program began, nearly 25 billion dollars have been paid out. Much progress has been made in lowering dust levels in coal mines since the standard of two milligrams per meter of air was established in 1972. Before that time, there was a 4-to-10-percent probability of a miner developing coal workers' pneumoconiosis at typical pre-1972 exposure levels. However, under the maximum respirable dust levels allowed today, this probability has been reduced to about 1 percent. Since average dust levels are lower today, we can expect fewer miners to develop CWP in the future. Out goal continues to be elimination of both coal workers' pneumoconiosis and silicosis in both coal and nonmetal mining. In 1985, MSHA revised its coal mine quartz policy to allow mine operators to submit dust samples used in setting the quartz standard. Previously, only single MSHA samples were used. Even though less than half of the mine operators have taken advantage of this change, it has provided a larger population of samples for analysis then before. Also the policy allows operations that are on a reduced quartz standard to have the standard reviewed every six months. In underground coal mining, the job of roof bolter typically has higher than normal exposures to quartz. About 45 percent of respirable dust samples from roof bolting operations contain more than 5 percent quartz and therefore are put on a reduced quartz standard. One objective of the policy revision was to improve miners' health by follow-up monitoring, and this is being done with roof bolting jobs. MSHA studies of surface coal mining operations have provided data showing that bulldozer operators and highwall rotary drill operators often have high exposure to quartz dust, and our agency is directing enforcement efforts to reducing this hazard. Planning today for what hopefully will never happen is one of the surest ways to decrease the chance of it happening. As Napoleon proved and Ian Mitroff wrote, "The heat and stress of battle is the worst time to make decisions of strategic importance." Mitroff also wrote, "The value of a plan is not that it will ever perfectly match reality, but going through the process of planning speeds the process of recovery. It allows the organization to emotionally work through the worst before it actually happens." This paper concentrates on things miners must consider; on the need for plans to be like a belt conveyor strong enough to carry the load, flexible enough to stretch a little; on the criticality of throwing away fax machines and telephones, and having certain officials at the scene rather than back in head-quarters; on the training of fire brigades and mine-rescue teams; on having company-controlled chromatographs; on having people who can look at trends rather than numbers. Some of the things in this paper might anger some readers; for that, I can only ask them to consider first the problem not their position.

IN THE BEGINNING Contrary to popular myth, the personal computer can trace its roots back to a time before 1981 and the IBM PC. The seeds of the personal computer revolution were probably founded in 1975 with the release of the Altair (kit) personal computer, first advertised in Popular Electronics. June of 1975 marked the beginning of the Homebrew Computer Club in San Francisco. The founding membership list of the Homebrew Club now reads like a "Who's Who" of those involved in the early development of the personal computer industry. The Apple I computer was created by Steve Wozniak in early 1976 from the newly manufactured MOS Technology 6502 chip. It had 4,000 bytes (4K) of Random Access Memory (RAM] memory, a revolutionary amount of memory in 1976. Another early pioneer, the Commodore Pet computer, was another 6502 machine, but with 8K of memory. Tandy Corporation made its name in the hobby industry with leather kits. They embarked on a new path with the production of the TRS-80 line of personal computers. Most were based on the Z-80 chip, but again, were memory limited. A number of other Z-80 based systems followed later, including the Osbourne and the KayPro Computers. These systems were based on the Digital Research CP/M operating system and had a maximum of 64,000 bytes of memory (64K). The Apple I1 Computer appeared in 1977. Newer models of the original Commodore Pet and an Atari computer followed. These machines were also limited to 64K of memory addressing, and the early models typically shipped with only 16K, 32K, or 48K of memory. The Z-80 and the 6502 were the first truly commercialized CPU chips touting boxes with key- boards, monitors (sometimes a TV), and the ability to expand (peripheral slots for serial communications, centronics parallel communications, etc.1. They all shared one technology, audio tape as a storage media. The use of a portable tape recorder provided inexpensive, if not always reliable, magnetic storage. The tape recorders were typically finicky and required patience to use. Adjustments to the volume control were often needed to find "just-the-right" setting for loading or saving information. This kept the personal computer from being accepted in many markets, and gave it a reputation as a hobbyist or experimenters' toy. In early 1979, Steve Wozniak finished the design of a floppy disk drive and controller. This was a revolutionary design which reduced the "then" standard number of controller chips from fifty-plus, to just eight. With the advent of an affordable floppy disk drive mechanism, the personal computer was about to gain respectability. From a business standpoint, it was now possible to save and reliably retrieve business information. It also provided a superior means of distribution for commercially created software. Commercial software became a commodity rather than an oddity.

Surface subsidence process due to underground coal mining often has the potential to cause problems to buried pipelines. In this paper, a technique for assessing the stress level on a subsidence-affected pipeline is introduced. The main contributors for the stresses on the pipelines are identified. Mitigation techniques for reducing the stress on the pipeline have been proposed and successfully tested.

Geochemical returns from commercial analytical laboratories are often delayed because of postal and other bulk distribution inefficiencies. Consequently, minerals exploration programs are handicapped due to insufficient time for treatment, analysis, and diagnosis of the data. The minerals industry lacks a system for rapid transmission of geochemical data which allows immediate entry into statistical and plotting routines. Over the past three years, Houston International Minerals Corporation (HIMCO) has developed a computer-based system to receive, treat, and distribute geochemical data. In the past two years, Bondar-Clegg (Denver) and Chemex (Vancouver) have developed systems to transmit' data directly to HIMCO via the world-wide Boeing Computer Services (BCS) network. The main benefits to HIMCO have been ten less days for reporting turnaround, ten less days for keypunching, less data handling, accuracy. The benefits to the laboratories have been improved in-house data management, reporting, and HIMCO's increased geochemical activity.

An investigation is made into the applicability of queueing theory to simulating the operation of a large open pit copper mine in the southwestern United States. Actual data from a working mine was used to construct curves for truck loading time, haulage and return time, and dumping times. Known results of investigations of queueing models (Koenigsberg - 1958, Gordon and Newell - 1967, Cabera and Maher - 1973) were used to simulate the actual operation. These did not give acceptable results so commonly used probability distributions were fitted to the actual data. A large computer program known as Q-GERT was used with the various parameters obtained from fitting the curves. Kolmogorov- Smirnov tests were run that showed that this was not satisfactory either. Finally, Q-GERT was used with the actual data from the mine. An appropriate correction factor is then found to apply to the exponential probability distributions tested previously and satisfactory results are obtained.

"Molybdenum, in the form of molybdenite, is a common byproduct of many copper mining and concentrating operations. While the recovery of most copper sulfide minerals is principally liberation controlled, the recovery of molybdenite is much more complex, with fully liberated particles commonly lost to tailings.A geometallurgical investigation was undertaken of molybdenite from the Bingham Canyon deposit with the aim of determining what effects, if any, mineralogy and the mineralogical attributes of morphology, angularity, liberation and size have on molybdenite recovery in the processing circuit. A set of samples was collected from the ores and products of Rio Tinto Kennecott’s Copperton Concentrator. The samples were analyzed by normal polarized reflected light microscopy, X-ray diffractometry, and scanning electron microscopy using a Mineral Liberation Analyzer, revealing the presence of two distinct types of molybdenite, which are the two polytypes: hexagonal (2H) and rhombohedral (3R). The 2H polytype occurs as textbook-shaped particles in quartz-molybdenite veins located in the core of the deposit, while the 3R polytype occurs as disseminated, ball-shaped particles with a dull or frosted appearance along the margins of the mineralized intrusive body or central core. Each polytype exhibited metallurgical properties consistent with those reported in the literature. The 2H polytype is easily ground, kinetically “faster” floating and displays surface attributes that are amenable to higher rates of recovery. This commonly results in the production of a high-quality molybdenum concentrate under normal operating conditions at most copper concentration operations. The 3R polytype is difficult to grind, kinetically “slower” floating and displays surface attributes that are less amenable to recovery. Therefore, in deposits with higher concentrations of the 3R polytype, modifications to operating parameters may be necessary to improve the recovery of molybdenite.A preliminary investigation into the metal budget of porphyry copper and molybdenum deposits indicated a possible positive correlation between total economic metal budget and polytype content. Higher concentrations of the 3R polytype appear to be more prevalent in gold-enriched porphyries than in molybdenum-enriched porphyries. This may help explain why it is easier to obtain higher rates of recovery in molybdenum ± tungsten-rich deposits, which contain little to none of the 3R polytype. There is a potential for the metal budget of a porphyry deposit to be used as an indication of the molybdenite polytype present as well as its impact on the economics, in terms of exploration, and the processing circuit, in terms of plant design."
