This paper presents an algorithm for optimizing the scheduling of trackless equipment in underground mines. With the shortest working interval and maximum productivity as goals, a genetic algorithm (GA) is used to solve the problem, and obtain the optimal working sequence with the most suitable equipment configuration possible. The input for the proposed method is the number of units and capacity of trackless equipment, the production process, ore amount in stopes, and the distance between stopes. The algorithmis verified using four setups of 5 stopes with 5 cycles, 5 stopes with 15 cycles, 10 stopes with 10 cycles, and 10 stopes with 30 cycles. The solution time of the algorithmis no more than 20 min, which is acceptable for practical applications. The results show that the setup of 10 stopes with 30 cycles is closer to the actual production of the mines, and the optimization model can effectively improve the operation efficiency. In this scenario, the robustness of the optimization is tested by simulating equipment failure events. Under the condition of 8% failure rate, the operation time is extended over 3.21–14.56% than expected, which represents strong robustness. The algorithm can quickly provide a feasible and effective solution for the production scheduling decision of trackless equipment in underground mines.

Acid-activated montmorillonite is used worldwide as a catalyst and as a sorbent for the enhancement and purification of petroleum products as well as vegetable and animal-based fats. The solid-acid character of the activated montmorillonite is imparted by the manufacturing process, giving it unique properties that are exploited in these industries. Several international companies and a multitude of local clay producers are focusing on improving the efficiency of their standard and specialized products. Blasting is used in mining and civil excavations to break the rockmass for ore production or creation of space. One of the disadvantages of the method is that it causes breakage beyond the proposed excavation lines. Pre-split is used to control such breakage in rockmass. This paper introduces the use of digital image analysis technique (DIAT) to measure rock breakage and half cast factor (HCF%). A new factor, undamaged area (AUD%), is introduced to improve the prediction, owing to the shortcomings of the HCF%. A comparison of significant data of AUD% and HCF% showed that HCF% has a lacuna of overpredicting, whereas AUD% can be used effectively to address the issue. Artificial neural networks are used to solve the complexity of multiple variables involved in predictions and to ascertain the importance and sensitivity of such variables in prediction regimes. This method will help users to evolve blast-induced damage objectively. A comprehensive scheme of things for future developments is included, which can be helpful to researchers in defining their research in this area.

INTRODUCTION The increasing concern for the environment may well present far more opportunities than problems for those involved in all phases of tunneling. All too frequently in the past, environmentalists and their concerns have been cast in a negative light, as obstacles to be overcome. Often forgotten is the fact that these same environmental concerns have created a rapidly increasing demand for new tunnels. Tunnels for rapid transit projects, clean water supply, and sewage treatment have been given a boost because of environmentalists' concerns about overuse of automobiles, inadequate water supplies, and improper sewage disposal. Concurrent with increasing use of tunnels to help solve or alleviate some of our environmental problems is an obligation not to create new ones in the process. Concerns which we feel responsible tunnel owners, engineers, and contractors should address themselves to include: (1) Minimum energy consumption, both during construction and in operation of the completed project; (2) proper storage and/or disposal of the excavated material; (3) minimum disruption during the construction process - noise, traffic, unnecessarily unsightly work areas, and possible weakening of foundations of nearby structures; and (4) a finished project consistent with community and environmental goals. We are especially concerned about two things. First, the longrun implications of a project -- what's good for a few people in the short-run may be bad for most of the people in the long-run. The determination of the air quality needs to dilute diesel exhaust gases to a safe level must be individually evaluated for particular cases. One such case is when diesel-powered vehicles are working in long dead- end headings with forcing auxiliary ventilation. The vehicles perform specific operations in a cyclic order required by the technical process. The dynamics of this process in certain conditions has a vital influence on environmental conditions in the working area and in the rest of the heading. Recent studies on diesel gas behavior in long headings have shown a zone of increased concentration of pollutants (accumulation) between the face and the mouth of the heading. To be able to control these accumulations of pollutants, use of the concept of planned air discharge by using the Coanda-type ducts is proposed. The main objective of this paper is to demonstrate an application of computer simulation of that process. It is shown that, by planning the additional air discharge, the concentration of diesel gases can meet required limits along the heading.

This paper review s several new applications of solvent extraction developed in conjunction with a research project carried out under the AEC Raw Materials Division by the Dow Western Division laboratories during the last two years. A process for recovery of uranium from ores by contacting the solid directly with organic solvent without a prior aqueous leach and a process for uranium recovery by contacting thick, unfiltered leach slurry with the solvent were studied in an attempt to simplify ad reduce the cost of ore treatment procedures. Processes to produce pure UF4 products at the concentrate mills thus eliminating the production and subsequent dissolution of the concentrate were investigated. Since many of the leach liquors contained vanadium as well as uranium, solvent extraction processes for by-product vanadium were also studied.

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PaDEP) has been issuing surface mining permits since 1984 that authorize remining in areas that will affect preexisting pollutional discharges. These permits require the mine operator to employ best management practices to reduce pollution loading from abandoned mine discharges. A total of 110 completed mining operations with 233 discharges were evaluated to determine the impact to water quality. Overall, acid loading from these discharges was reduced by 7, 200 kg (15, 900 lbs) per day or 61%. Metal loadings were also reduced. For acidity, 49% of discharges improved or were eliminated, 52% showed no significant change and fewer than 1 % got worse. Loading reductions resulted from a combination of reduced concentrations and lower flows.

Systematic planning of underground work is increasingly important in this era of advancement of rapid underground excavation techniques. The day when planning consisted of deciding which men would shovel and which would push wheelbarrows - and the answer to any problem was more men - has faded into the past. The modern underground constructor faces economic and competitive conditions which demand exacting planning, logistics and scheduling; the most efficient operating methods and equipment known; and realistic, comprehensive, analytical risk evaluation with adequate contingencies or other protection. Proper planning to cover all these elements - plus one other element: old fashioned "good luck" - will insure a successful underground project. Underground work, because of its inherent characteristics, is among the most risky types of construction. The forecasting of underground conditions is at this time only educated predictions based on sometimes faulty data, insufficient data, or no data at all. The predicted conditions of numerous operations have deviated far from the actual conditions encountered. Opportunities for error exist in profusion seldom present for surface operations. Other than this unusual risk factor, the planning for underground work does not differ greatly from planning for surface work. In planning and starting an operation there is seldom available the information or time to thoroughly analyze all unknowns. It then becomes necessary to develop a plan predicated on assumptions and trade-offs that appear to be safe and economical and to add time and cost contingencies that will provide some degree of protection. The methods of burst control treated in the authors' very informative paper have been applied in the Ruhr Coalfield, Germany, for more than 20 years and have proved to be highly effective. It might be interesting here to mention a few experiences: The symptoms of critical stresses when drilling with small diameters ("test drilling") are essentially the same as described. However, we consider the situation safe if these symptoms occur beyond a certain distance ahead of the face. That safety distance equals three times the seam thickness plus the daily advance. It is the total seam thickness that counts, not merely the mined portion. Critical stresses within the safety distance are dissolved by so-called destressing measures: drilling with heavier equipment, blasting, or water infusion. To avoid bump initiation, the destressing operations should begin at the sides of the stressed zone rather than in the middle. As to water injection, there are two different principles. If the situation is critical already, high pressures are applied for hydraulic fracturing. If the stresses still allow to drill deep holes, the fluid pressure is kept low and acts for a longer time. This is to make the coal break successively instead of violently - a long-term precaution. When the stresses are very high, destressing is the most appropriate means. We mostly drill with 95 mm-diam (3.7 in.- diam). The techniques in detail are somewhat complex and subject to modifications. But the general idea is to accomplish burst prevention by controlling the potential burst situations.

Alluvial valley floors constitute a valuable land resource and have been important to ranching operations in semiarid western United States. This resource may be in jeopardy locally if the alluvial deposits are disturbed by surface mining of coal deposits. Erosion problems caused by poor land-use practices can cause trenching of the unconsolidated alluvium with a consequent lowering of the water table and depletion of soil moisture needed to support vegetation. Historical evidence of this sequence of events is abundant in geologic literature and serves as the basis for assessing potential impacts of surface mining. The potential geomorphic impacts of surface mining on alluvial valley floors with regard to fluvial processes are: (1) disruption of the longitudinal profile followed by valley trenching and high sediment yields downstream and (2) replacement of the excavated alluvium with unconsolidated material that does not have similar physical characteristics and may be susceptible to erosion. Mining may disrupt the existing hydrologic framework affecting streamflow, ground-water levels and water quality of both surface water and ground water. Although functional hydrologic and geomorphic processes are similar, each valley represents a complex environment that does not submit to broad generalizations.

Introduction Geologic ore deposit models are key to any exploration program. In the search for ore deposits, the geologist first tries to understand the genesis of known ore bodies. During reconnaissance and evaluation of a prospect, a valid exploration model of a known ore body can help the explorationist focus on critical geologic attributes of the target area. Exploration models can conserve exploration funds that might otherwise be spent collecting data not critical to delineating an ore body. This article examines the benefits of using models, factors to be considered in developing models, and examples of the way recent models have evolved. New exploration concepts and techniques are developed in response to increased competition in the mining industry. New techniques can give an exploration group a slight edge that may translate into a discovery. Mine geology staffs may find previously unlooked for extensions to the ore body by applying new genetic concepts. When all appropriate techniques are applied to exploration and mining efforts, greater efficiency and increased profits may result. Before the 1950s, scientists speculated on the genesis of ore deposits and other natural phenomena. But they presented their results as if universal and final, even though they applied to only a few deposits. Because it did not provide sufficient criteria to distinguish the genetic processes, the classic conflict between hydrothermalists, epitomized by Lindgren, and nonhydrothermalists did not help the minerals explorationist much. Important information about individual ore deposits, such as age of the host rocks and mineralization, composition of the mineralizing fluids, and separation of mineralizing and nonmineralizing events in the paragenetic sequence, could not be gathered with past equipment and methods. But these early concepts of ore genesis contained excellent empirical observations, perhaps the most useful parts of these hypotheses. Through the years, prospectors have found most of the ore deposits in the world using direct observations and their collective empirical wisdom - an empirical model. The geologist's contribution becomes increasingly important after the more obvious surficial ore deposits have been discovered. In Europe and North America that time has arrived. With the introduction of sophisticated equipment and matching techniques in the 1950s in geochronology, geochemistry, geophysics, remote sensing, and computers, many previously equivocal genetic questions can be resolved. This proliferation of highly technical data has allowed the construction of many well-founded genetic models.

The federal Office of Surface Mining (OSW) has undertaken an effort to revise many of their permanent program regulations. Numerous procedures for compliance are being rewritten to allow for greater flexibility while meeting the requirements of the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act. This study investigates, for certain select provisions, the cost differential between complying with the original OSM standards and the more flexible, state-specific standards being allowed in many of the revised regulations. Estimated cost savings that could be realized under a few of the revised regulations are substantial and should provide a basis for seeking revisions to the state regulatory programs.

The calculation of open pit operations' capacities has been the subject of many studies using computer simulations. The common problems of simulation are that if one desires a realistic picture of an operation the programming work becomes long and expensive and that the program requires a large computer and long time to run. The method presented in this paper overcomes these problems by using a straightforward calculation procedure. It is based on the queuing theory's simple formula for waiting time in a closed circuit and uses a system of correction factors, which reflect the loading, travel, and dumping times' relative variabilities and which have been found by 1) mathematical analysis and 2) simulations of basic circuits. The method includes the main parameters of the operation: numbers, sizes and operational availabilities of trucks, shovels and dumping point, distribution of the production over shovels, trucks' loading, travel (loaded and empty) and dumping times as well as their variabilities, shift's composition. The procedure models: the average duration of a complete truck cycle during stationary and non-stationary periods during the shift as a function of the number of trucks in the circuit, the composition of the average 100% operated shift, the simultaneous probabilities of operationally available shovels and trucks and the distribution of shovels and trucks according to production and cycle times. The procedure can be programmed for a small computer and requires only short computing time, which makes extensive studies of various parameter combinations practical to carry out. The development of the method is an extension of previous work by Morgan and Peterson {1}, who by simulation established the relation between the match factor (which is the ratio between the sum of one loading time pr truck in the circuit and the complete net cycle time) and the shovel's efficiency, and by Hayes, Splaine and Whitaker {2}, who established this relation from a large number of observations in the Nchanga pit in Zambia. The present method establishes this relation by a straightforward calculation procedure. Theoretical solutions to some situations are found in the litterature on the queuing theory. The papers {3},{4} and {5} give solutions to situations, which fall outside those encountered in the shovel-trucks circuit. These solutions together with simulations of in-termediary situations have been used to establish an interpolation procedure for the correction factors to be applied to the waiting time formula in order to cover the situations encountered in practice.

At the operations level, productivity is a principle key to profitability. If you are competing with other mines that are paying roughly the same wage rate and the same prices for capital, materials, and energy, the only way your profit can be greater is by producing more output per unit of input. Mines with higher productivity have higher profit margins. Higher profit margins lead to greater operating cash flow, and cash flow is what distinguishes a dog from a cash cow. The turnaround in U.S. metals during the 1980s was in large part due to incredible improvements in productivity. According to statistics compiled by Kaufmann, 1991, labor productivity, measured as tonnes of primary production/manhour, increased 64% in steel, 94% in copper, 75% in lead, 143% in zinc, 132% in molybdenum, and 75% in gold. These improvements were hard won. However, with most modernization programs now complete, measuring and monitoring productivity becomes even more important as producers strive to maintain the gains they have achieved.

Phenolic foams, known for fire resistance, show broader industrial potential, particularly in mining, through property enhancements. Adjustments to the formaldehyde-to-phenol (F/P) ratio, bio-based additives like lignin, and nano-silica improve foam strength and thermal stability. Density modifications allow foams to range from flexible, low-density forms to rigid, high-density supports. In mining, enhanced phenolic foams could reduce coal ignition risks by acting as oxygen-blocking barriers. Current findings suggest these foams offer viable, sustainable solutions for safety in hazardous environments. Continued development could make them essential for thermal and mechanical applications under extreme conditions. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the mechanical characteristics of phenolic foams, current enhancement strategies, and standardized testing methods used to evaluate foam properties.

REE analyses of cumulate plagioclase from the PGE ore zone of the Stillwater Complex indicate that pressure fluctuations in the magma chamber acting on a single magma can- not be responsible for features such as the reappearance of Mg-rich olivine on the liquidus. The data is more consistent with a model involving multiple injection and mixing of geochemically distinct magmas. The PGE bearing sulfides of the J-M Reef are associated with such a re- appearance of olivine, indicating that the unusual location of the ore zone may be related to the addition of new magma, compositionally distinct from magmas that produced cumulates in the Ultramafic zone of the complex.
