The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers is in the early stages of design for an estimated 14 m (46 ft) diameter tunnel in northeast New Jersey. This tunnel will carry flood waters from the upper end of the Pompton River in Wayne County, to an outlet in Newark Bay, a distance of 33 km (20.5 miles). The tunnel will be constructed by a tunnel boring machine (TBM), the size of which is unprecedented at the present time. The alignment is through Triassic and Jurassic sandstones, siltstones, and shales that include three beds of basalt that range in thickness from 76 to 310 m (250 to 1020 ft).

A majority of continuous mining machines employ a water spray system and a machine-mounted flooded-bed scrubber to suppress and capture dust during coal mining. These machine-mounted dust control systems must be designed to function within the localized face ventilation system at the mining section to control both dust and methane. Spray systems can impede or improve the scrubber effectiveness in controlling dust or methane at the mining face. Laboratory experiments were conducted to examine the effect of spray type, spray pressure, machine body blocking sprays and scrubber airflow on dust and gas levels, while using a 12.2-m (40-ft) exhaust ventilation curtain setback from the face. These experiments were conducted with the mining machine positioned at the end of a simulated 6.1-m (20-ft) sump and slab cut. Results indicate that the hollow cone nozzles with blocking sprays best complement the flooded-bed scrubber performance in an exhaust ventilation system. This external spray system notably reduced dust and gas levels on the off-curtain side of the mining machine for both the sump and slab cut compared to the flat spray nozzles. Higher scrubber airflows reduced dust and gas levels on the curtain side and in the return of the continuous mining machine. The remote operator position, located on the off-curtain side and parallel to the inlet end of the exhaust curtain, sustained the most stable and lowest dust levels around the mining machine.

This paper describes the technical status of the atmospheric pressure fluidized bed combustion (AFBC) process for utility steam generation. Major areas where AFBC development work is needed are discussed. Various approaches to solving these key issues are identified and the ongoing research and development programs addressing the key development areas are described. Other significant programs pertaining to the development of AFBC for utility steam generation are also discussed and needs for future work identified.

The Folsom Area Stormwater Improvement Project is part of SFPUC’s flood resilience efforts under the Sewer System Improvement Program. This 4,000-foot-long, 12-footinside- diameter tunnel will help reduce the risk of flooding in San Francisco’s low-lying Inner Mission neighborhood. The project is in a high seismic hazard zone and extends through a complex geologic corridor that includes full-face soft, compressible Bay Mud, Colma Sands, and full-face rock with several stretches of mixed-face conditions. Additional challenges include removal of 99 piles beneath an existing box sewer, tunneling under commuter rail tracks, and an underground tie-in. This paper examines these challenges and how they are being addressed.

Throughout the history of the development of mechanical conveyor systems, it has always been an established condition that loads are received at one end of a single-belt conveyor and discharged at the other end, in a point-to-point, manner. In systems designed for the continuous transport of granular materials, vertical or horizontal changes in; direction have always necessitated two or mope single-belt conveyor units, with a corresponding number of motors, assemblies and attendant mechanical and human or electronic controls. Besides these high-cost factors, every change in the system's direction also calls for a transfer point that involves a drop-back of the material from one level to another with some loss of the material and, in many cases, unwanted additional granulation. Where changes in the location of the discharge point are wanted, the conventional single-belt conveyor must either be replaced by a shorter or longer unit or additional units purchased and installed, or existing units rearranged. This can take days or weeks, and involve special expenditures as well as loss of valuable production time.

Wear is an extremely important topic when considering high-pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) for any new application. Given the inevitable variations in ore properties throughout a mine’s life, it is difficult to predict the effect of material and operating conditions on the wear parts: specifically, the HPGR rolls. However, the possibility of continuous scanning of rolls provides ample information to review the wear pattern and ways to optimize it. In this regard, as part of a broader investigation, the feasibility of in-line scanning of HPGR rolls in a laboratory-scale HPGR is studied and presented. The choice of scanners and methods adopted to achieve high-level accuracy for determining wear is discussed in this paper, and the inherent variability affecting the measurements is evaluated.

For several generations now, the high alumina clayey sediments of Southeastern Alabama and Southwestern Georgia have supplied those regions with steady, mineral-based income although the impact of that income has been relatively minor until recently. Since World War II, mining activity has increased algebraically with over half of the total ore value in the Alabama area having been recovered since that time. The Georgia area production increases are even more dramatic. The trends are continuing and the next decade should see ore winning figures which will dwarf all previous production. It's time for the mining engineers to take note of this development as the mining methods, similar to the production, have developed rapidly and now offer challenges for the most competent professional. The development of mining techniques has followed a classic pattern. Beginning almost a hundred years or so ago, with the loading of weather-resistant surface boulders into mule-drawn wagons, mining methods have progressed to discovery of limited surface exposures in outcrop and eventually to stripping and development of non-obvious, subsurface deposits. Little by little, the overburden thickness of new pits has increased until, at present, pits with 100' -125' of overburden are being actively worked. Ground water problems in the Eufaula District are particularly challenging. At A. P. Green's J. W. Baker Pit, #l, in Barbour Co., Alabama, it is necessary to continually pump groundwater at the rate of about 400 gallons per minute from wells on the periphery of this large pit in order to keep the water table low enough to allow mining of the ore body.

INTRODUCTION Following the world stock market debacle in October 1987, it would have been foolhardy to expect that securing equity funding in 1988 would be easy. Indeed, major equity financing's for gold mining companies have until recently been few and far between in the weeks and months following Black Monday. As a result, gold bullion loans have taken on an increasingly important role among producing firms in the industry. During 1988, the role of bullion loans has become increasingly complex and controversial. Some observers herald the emergence of a new breed of bullion loans - such as the 1,000,000 ounce loan to Newmont Mining, and the 400,000+ ounce facilities drawn down by Bond International Gold and Placer Pacific - as both increasing the public's awareness of the technique, and representing the dawn of a new age of gold financing. But are these recent loan facilities significantly different than those issued worldwide during the early to mid 19801s? Similarly, observers have voiced concerns regarding the role that gold loans play in the world's bullion markets, specifically in relation to their impact on prices. Have the new generation of mega-loans depressed current and future prices? Has the current surge of bullion loans irrevocably changed the nature of the gold market? Is there an upper limit on the number and size of gold loans?

"Paste Technology has some advantages comparing to other surface disposal methods. With this method, it is possible to pump high concentrated solid materials to very long distances without segregation problem. However, it is known from Literature that pumpability of materials is completely related to rheological properties of the materials. For this reason, in this study, the rheological parameters (e.g. yield stress and viscosity values) of the paste material prepared from Pb-Zn tailings at various solid ratios (60-85%) were obtained in order to determine the pumpability of the paste material. Additionally, slump tests, which are usually used in mining industry, was carried out. Finally, regression analysis was made between the slump values and rheological parameters of the paste material to find a correlation between two independent parameters. The results showed that there is a great correlation between the slump values and the yield stress of the material. On the other hand, there was no correlation with viscosity: ty=430.28-16.877Sv (R2= 0,94; ty: Yield Stress (Pa), Sv: Slump Value (cm)). Based on the results obtained from this study, it can be clearly concluded that the slump values obtained from a simple test can be used to predict yield stress values of paste materials. INTRODUCTION Recently, surface disposal of mining tailings has become one of the biggest problems in mining industry in terms of environmental issues. Therefore, several researches have been focused on this subject in order to find a best solution or method for this problem. These studies showed that paste technology has some advantages compared to other conventional methods. Tailings thickened to the extent show no segregation of particles during transportation, and relatively small amount of settling occur post-deposition which are often called “paste” (Cincilla et al. 1997). Paste tailing technology has two applications in the industrial area as underground paste fill and surface paste disposal. Paste tailing technology was first started to be used in Grund mine, Germany in the late 1970s (Grice, 1998). Process tailing material, water and - if needed - cement materials, which are the components of the paste, must be blended to obtain a homogenous mixture suitable for pumpability. Consistency behavior of the paste material is determined using a conventional sedimentation cone concrete test (slump). Meanwhile, the slump value of the paste must be between 200 and 250 mm for surface applications (Newman et al., 2001). Additionally, in the case of underground paste system, the optimum slump value must be between 150 and 200 mm. On the other hand, the water content and density of paste at certain slump value change depending on the amount of fine particles in the tailing sample. While moisture of the material will be high, its density will be low because of surface area of particles which increases with decrease in particle size (Meggyes and Debreczeni, 2006). For pumpability of the paste to long distances, slump value of the paste must be good enough to be accepted for use of surface paste disposal. Paste material has a yield stress because they show non-Newtonian behavior and generally is classified as a Bingham plastic fluid. (Cooke, 2008; Theriault, 2003). In addition, the appropriate viscosity value of the paste along with the yield stress must be between 100 and 250 Pa (Bascetin et al., 2013; Bascetin et al., 2014; Bascetin et al., 2015)."

Hanna has developed three production planning systems to help the mine engineers determine the sequence of mining from available ore supples. The Production Scheduling System was developed to give the staff a tool for long range planning by sequencing the removal of blocks from an open pit property. It was needed to determine the year of removal for each block so that the optimum present-valued pit limits could be established by our pit design program. Since in this type of planning short term grade control is less of a factor than it is in daily or monthly planning, the system gives the program greater control and more latitude in block selection. It permits only full blocks to be taken.

Value Engineering on Connecticut DOT’s Walk Bridge selected the trenchless option for utility relocation to address the channel crossing’s environmental concerns. The design and construction considerations of the twin micro-tunnel drives and associated shafts are presented. Key challenges included vertical alignment selection to achieve minimum one-tunnel diameter stable cover within thin glacial till underlying extremely soft clay, limited choice of pipe and joint materials meeting stringent non-metallic conduit requirements, thermal grout backfill application, and the close proximity of temporary trestle piles. Mitigation measures were developed for potential point loading pipe damage from remnant boulder fragments in the annular space.

INTRODUCTION During the last few years, several new ventilation developments have attracted the interest of mining engi¬neers. Some of these developments are applicable pri¬marily to hard-rock mining, while others are more applicable to coal mining. STOPPINGS Parachute Stopping The parachute stopping is a new type of quick-erect stopping that is intended for temporary use in hard-rock mines (Kissell, Thimons, and Vinson, 1975). As shown in Fig. 1, the stopping is shaped very much like an ordinary parachute, with a canopy of impermeable fabric that is sewn to regularly spaced straps running to a common point. To erect the stopping, the straps are attached to a fixed anchor point such as a roof bolt, and the edge of the canopy is lifted into the moving air¬stream. The airstream pops the parachute canopy into place, and the differential air pressure across the stop¬ping holds it in place, forcing the fabric against the walls, roof, and floor of the mine opening. The principal advantage of the parachute stopping is that it requires only a few minutes to install, making it a great time-saver for emergency use or for day-to¬day changes in ventilation during the production cycle. However, the parachute stopping does require some minimum air velocity to lift it and some minimum differential pressure to hold it in place. For a fabric weighing 0.27 kg/ m2 (8.0 oz per sq yd), the minimum air velocity is about 0.5 m/s (100 fpm), and the mini¬mum differential pressure is about 0.05 kPa [0.2 in. water gage (WG) ]. There is always some air leakage around the stop¬ping, mainly depending upon the extent to which pipes or other obstructions encumber the airway and prevent good sealing. Leakage of a few cubic meters per second (a few thousand cubic feet per minute) can be expected, unless foam is used to improve the seal at the edges of the canopy. Quick-Fix Blowout Stopping The quick-fix blowout stopping is a variation of the parachute stopping (Thimons and Kissell, 1976), and it is used in the proximity of blasting operations. This type of stopping is designed to be blown out easily by the blast forces, and it may be reinstalled quickly and easily. The long high-strength straps of the parachute stopping are replaced by groups of short straps that tear easily. These straps are attached at six equally spaced locations around the perimeter of the canopy. To erect the stopping, one strap of each of the six groups is fastened to the mine wall, roof, and floor by using spads, by setting pins with a powder-actuated gun, or by tying the straps to some firm anchor point. Once the straps have been attached, the differential air pressure across the stopping, which must be at least 0.025 kPa (0.1 in. WG), forces the stopping perimeter against the mine walls, thus creating the air seal. It is the self-sealing feature of this stopping that makes it a significant time-saver. Only a few attachment points are needed; in many cases, four attachment points are sufficient, since the stopping naturally tends to form a seal with the airway surfaces. When nearby produc¬tion blasting exerts excessive forces on the stopping, one or more of the straps tears away from its attachment point, protecting the stronger canopy from damage. Damage-Resistant Brattice The damage-resistant brattice is a stopping that is designed for use in mines such as salt and limestone mines where the differential pressures are low and the roof is relatively flat. As shown in Fig. 2, the damage-resistant brattice consists of a series of brattice panels that are hung vertically and joined by Velcro® connections. When the brattice is subjected to strong blast forces, the Velcro® connection peels apart and allows the panels to open without incurring damage. The Velcro® connections can be resealed by hand within a matter of minutes. Such damage-resistant brattices have withstood the blast effects of 318 kg (700 lb) of ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (ANFO) explosive detonated as close as 91 m (300 ft) from the brattice. Ordinary brattice cloth is used for the panels, with a 51-mm (2-in.) wide strip of Velcro® hooks sewn along one edge of the length, and a 51-mm (2-in.) wide strip of Velcro® pile sewn along the other edge. Both the hooks and the pile are sewn onto the same side of the brattice cloth. The resulting Velcro® seal formed be¬tween adjacent panels is perpendicular to the brattice itself, and the leading edge of the seal can be directed either toward or away from the blast forces; the brattice works equally well in either case. To hang the brattice, panels of brattice cloth about 0.9 m (3 ft) longer than the height of the airway are cut from a 1.8-m (6-ft) wide roll. The additional 0.9 m (3 ft) of brattice cloth allows 0.3 m (1 ft) for attachment to the roof by means of a board, with 0.6 m (2 ft) for forming a good air seal at the floor. Each brattice panel is wrapped once or twice around a 51 X 102 mm (2 X 4 in.) or 25 X 76 mm (1 X 3 in.) mounting board that is 254 to 305 mm (10 to 12 in.) shorter than the width of the panel. Estimating ground-water inflows in rock deep tunnels is critical to the safety of personnel constructing the tunnel and the cost of construction. This paper presents two case studies, including the Chattahoochee and Nancy Creek tunnels, for estimating steady-state ground-water inflows into deep rock tunnels. Statistical methods were applied to packer test data obtained from exploratory borings during geotechnical site investigations, and a semiempirical procedure was used to estimate ground-water inflows. The Chattahoochee and Nancy Creek tunnels are deep rock tunnels that exhibit radial flow conditions. For the radial flow condition, a statistical analysis presented in this paper indicates that the semiempirical procedure works well; however, variations in the procedure and/or an insufficient amount of testing could lead to underestimations of the inflow quantities. Modeling using Monte Carlo simulations was observed to be an effective tool for removing data distribution irregularities and incorporating high-end permeability data to derive reasonable ground-water inflow estimates.

Abstract. Induced fluorescent sorting is a means of beneficiating an ore by selective labeling with a reagent combination which fluoresces when activated by ultraviolet light The reagent combination normally consists of a surface active compound and a fluorescent dye. The surfactant adheres selectively to a specific surface and carries the dye with it. Upon activation with ultraviolet light, the labeled pieces, in the size range 1.27 cm to 20 cm (0.5 to 8 in.), are detected during free fall by photosensitive cells and ejected by water jets. Either ore or gangue may be labeled.

This paper describes the laboratory study which permitted an exploration of high grinding ball consumption in the secondary open circuit wet grinding mills at the Sidbec-Normines plant, Port Cartier, Québec. Corrosion undoubtedly exists but is of minor importance. Abrasion resulting from the physical nature of the company's iron concentrate is the main reason for the high ball wear. It was found that at least 30% reduction in ball consumption is possible by decreasing attrition grinding through the use of lifters in the mill. At the industrial level this would entail more lifters and/or higher lifters in the mill linings.

"The picture of the baby surrounded by the number of (usually) pounds of a variety of mineral products a newborn will use in a lifetime has been widely distributed over the years, both on the web and as business cards that could be distributed to anyone. Figure 1 shows a typical example. I have included a slide of the mineral baby in various lectures over the years, particularly in my lecture “Industrial minerals: much used, little recognized.” The mineral baby with associated estimated lifetime mineral quantities is updated every year. I collected a set of past mineral baby pictures to examine the changes in the quantities of the various mineral products over the years.The mineral baby was introduced by the Minerals Information Institute (MII) in 1999 and became known as the “MII Baby.” SME took over MII in 2008 and continued publication as the “MII Baby” until the merger of MII with SME’s GEM program in 2011 to form SME’s Minerals Education Coalition (MEC). MEC is now the publisher. Figure 2 is the 2016 version of the mineral baby. The repositioning of the picture of the baby from lying on its back to crawling reflects a major design change to help emphasize that SME’s MEC is now the mineral baby’s publisher.Data sourcesThe data used to prepare each year’s mineral baby comes from the National Mining Association, which collects the preliminary annual mineral commodity data from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and other sources. This preliminary data becomes available late in the first half of each year. The life expectancy data for each year comes from the Center for Disease Control’s “Data and Statistics by Topic” and the population data comes from the U.S. Census Bureau’s “Quick Facts” tab.The source mineral data is compiled using metric tonnes as the basic unit. The quantity of of each mineral is the apparent U.S. consumption each year."

Data transmission, communication, tracking, and the connection of equipment such as gas detectors, cameras, and collision avoidance systems in today's tunnel industry are critical pieces of the constructor's infrastructure. Reliability, flexibility, redundancy, and cost-effectiveness are key in selecting and implementing inte- grated systems. Both wired and wireless components are used to deliver custom solutions and can involve interconnectivity between backbones. Systems integration is important as industry adopts proven technologies from other industries. Case stud- ies are given showing how tailor-made approaches deliver needed functionality, with varying degrees of com- plexity, in various classifications of environment, in order to meet a project need.

History of Underground Coal Mining in Illinois The production of coal in Illinois using underground mining methods, commenced early in the 1800's; however, the first shaft entrance was not sunk until 1842. The shafts range in depth from 16 feet (4.9 m) in Peoria County to 1,001 feet (306 m) in Christian County. The earlier mines were smell, private operations that worked outcrops and shallow seams at less than 100 feet (30.5 m) in depth. By 1975, there were reported 4,076 abandoned underground coal mines in 70 Illinois counties (Nawrot, 1977). There were many more mines; however, only 4,076 underground mines have been documented. Small mining operations characterize the majority of the underground mines. There have been no significant multiple seam operations in Illinois. The most extensively mined seams were the number two, five, and six seams. Number two seam was worked in the early 1900's by 252 mines in the longwall mining region of northern Illinois (Nawrot, 1977). Available records for 2,054 abandoned mines identify 1,043 as shaft nines, 700 as slope mines, and 311 as drift mines. Some operators began reporting annually to the State Department of Labor in 1879 and by 1882 all mine operators were reporting. Annual reporting still continues to date. The information is compiled by the State Department of Panes and Minerals in their "Annual Coal Report." By the end of 1974 there were 800,000 acres (323,756 hectares) of abandoned underground coal mine workings (Smith-Stall, 1975)2 Copies of abandoned underground coal mine maps may be inspected by interested parties in the State Department of fines and Minerals office in Springfield, Illinois, or at the office of any county recorder for mines within their county. Copies of active underground coal mine maps may be inspected at a State mine rescue station near the mine site or at the county recorder's in the county in which the mine is located. Copies of active underground coal nine naps shall be open to the examination of all interested persons, but such examination shall be made only in the presence of the State mane inspector or the recorder. At the present time, the Department of Mines and Minerals has 1,746 maps of abandoned underground coal mines in its possession. These maps cover the majority of

The recent increase in development of refractory gold deposits has resulted in changes to the traditional treatment processes. The selection of the preferred refractory treatment process is dependent on the mineralogy of the ore. One process, which has recently gained increasing attention, utilizes dry grinding and roasting of the whole ore. This paper will discuss some of the considerations to be addressed during the design of the process fl owsheet and what the effects of the various alternatives will be on the plant capital and operating costs. The paper will be based, in part, on current experiences with dry grinding, roasting plant design and start-up.

One of the major problems with deep Polish hard coal mines are deformations of close-to-wall galleries since they are necessary and must he kept open for emergency situations and are largely responsible for work disturbances. In order to ensure safe and effective working operations, it is necessary to often rebuild galleries which, apart from the inevitable stoppage of operations, is greatly disadvantageous for the operation of a mine. The largest problems with maintaining the galleries open occur in Lower Silesian Coal Field mines where sometimes it is necessary to reconstruct the galleries several times [(Fig. 1)]. In light of what has been said above, the aim of this article is to present the reader with methods and ways of determining deformations occurring in close-to-wall galleries. Squeezing or convergence of headings is only a portion of the entire process of ground movement caused by ground disturbance due to workings. The term "squeezing of headings" is to be understood as a shortening of the distance between a point set on the roof of a heading and the corresponding one on the floor. It is very important to know the rules governing the process of squeezing in a particular mining system since it affords possibilities to define changes of the process and its parameters at any moment for a given system. This is of utmost importance because convergence of a heading is one of the most significant manifestations of ground pressure which has already been proved by studies performed by Everling (1). On the basis of those studies it has been observed that there exists an almost linear relation between the rate of convergence and loading [(Fig. 2)]. This, in turn, means that the deformations of the already exploited portion of heading are proportional to the pressure changes.
