Oil based drilling fluids utilize a number of industrial mineral products to accomplish oil and gas drilling in several environments where water based drilling fluids are less effective or inappropriate. These industrial minerals include: organically modified bentonite, organically modified lignite, barite, hematite, mica, calcium chloride and other salts. A variety of organic products are also utilized in oil based drilling fluid formulations. Oil based drilling fluids are preferred in several drilling situations because: they can be used to drill through water sensitive formations; they produce holes that are very close to the drill bit gauge; they exhibit high temperature stability; they are more environmentally acceptable; they minimize producing formation damage; they provide faster drilling rates when used with new polycrystalline diamond drill bits; they minimize pipe sticking and lost rig time.

Many longwall operators experience difficulty complying with the federal regulation limiting average dust exposure. Others are currently in compliance, but the dust exposure limit keeps then from increasing their production. Spray water is a major means of dust control. Excess water can cause problems in the transportation system and the cleaning plant, and reduces the Btu value of the run of mine coal. Thus, the dust exposure reduction per unit of water sprayed must be maximized. This paper discusses underground tests recently completed as part of a Bureau of Mines research program to determine the effects of variations in spray water flow rate, pressure, proportioning and spray orientation on longwall shearers.

The introduction of continuous papermaking in the early 1800's was the beginning of the industry as we know it today. Since that time, the majority of the paper produced has employed an acid process. However, in the mid 1960?s, European producers began a transition to an alkaline papermaking process. Early European mill conversions to alkaline papermaking begun in the 601s, accelerated during the 1970's influenced by the dramatically higher cost for OPEC energy as well as the high cost of fiber and imported filler clay.

The detection of hazardous geological anomalies through remote sensing techniques is the subject of current research efforts sponsored by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. In this review, hazardous geological anomalies are discussed with respect to the "view" presented along with potential operational concepts for each technique. The design and development of a borehole radar is described with emphasis on the potential range and resolution capability of the system under realistic underground conditions. Results of field tests at two coal mines and at a hard rock future subway location are presented.

Technical advances in longwall mining over the last several years have resulted in much larger and faster shearers that have the capability of mining at speeds over 30 m/min (100 fpm). This has resulted in a substantial increase in the amount of dust that is generated at the shearer and during shield advances. Meanwhile, increased underground coal production has put a greater demand on longwall dust control systems as some operators have had difficulty maintaining consistent compliance with federal dust standards. To address this need, the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is investigating the effectiveness of a water spray manifold mounted on the tailgate end of the shearer body. The sprays are oriented parallel to the tailgate ranging arm, and these sprays create a water curtain confining the dust plume near the face, preventing the dust from drifting into the walkway. This redirection of dust provides a clean air envelope for the tailgate shearer operator and jacksetters working near the tailgate drum. Three different tailgate spray manifold designs were tested and evaluated at the Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) Pittsburgh Longwall Test Facility. Manifolds were equipped with hollow cone or flat fan water spray nozzles and evaluated at three face air velocities — 152, 213 and 274 m/min (500, 700 and 900 fpm)— and at water pressures of 689, 1,034 and 1,379 kPa (100, 150 and 200 psi). Reductions in dust concentrations were observed at six face sampling locations for all the tailgate manifold systems at each of the tested spray pressures and face velocities. Average reduction efficiencies of at least 90 percent were seen at the three sampling locations closest to the shearer for all three manifold systems at nozzle spray pressures greater than 689 kPa (100 psi). Based on results from the laboratory tests showing reductions in dust concentrations at sampling locations downwind of the shearer, a spray manifold was fabricated and evaluated at an underground operation.

Shale is anisotropic due to the presence of bedding planes. The anisotropic strength of shale has been extensively studied. However, little attention has been paid to the size effect on shale strength considering the anisotropy. This research uses the discrete element method to study the size effect on the strength of shale under the uniaxial stress state. It is assumed that the anisotropy is caused by bedding planes, while the size effect is caused by randomly distributed flaws. The numerical model of shale comprises three components: shale matrix modeled by bonded particles (2) bedding planes modeled by smooth joints (3) flaws modeled by discrete fractures. The developed model is scaled to different sizes and tested in the uniaxial compression and the direct tension tests. The test result show that the uniaxial compressive strength decreases as the specimen size increases when the loading direction is perpendicular or parallel to bedding planes. The uniaxial compressive strength is determined by the flaws while the bedding planes only play a limited role. However, the size effect on the direct tensile strength depends on the direction of bedding planes. When the loading is perpendicular to bedding planes, the size effect is not prominent. The direct tensile strength is determined by the bedding planes while the flaws have little effect. When the loading direction is parallel to bedding planes, the direct tensile strength decreases when the specimen size increases. The direct tensile strength is determined by the flaws while the bedding planes have little effect.

Discussion by S. Serata and K. Fuenkajorn Background Results of the above study in the August 1991 issue of Mining Engineering offer valuable lessons in the solution of cutter-roof problems. The original study plan was initiated by the discussion authors to solve the problems using the "stress control method" of mining (Serata 1976, 1982; Serata, Carr and Martin, 1984; Serata and Gardner, 1986; Serata, Gardner and Preston, 1986; Serata, Gardnerand Shrinivasan, 1986; Serata and Kikuchi, 1986; Serata, Preston and Galagoda, 1987) However, the plan and the planner were changed to the arrangement reported in the paper. The change was considered reasonable at the time due to the mine engineers' uncertainties about the stress control method. Consequently, the basic principle of the study was shifted from the original stress control method to the method described in the paper, which will be called the "yield pillar method" for the purposes of this discussion. The paper convinces the reader that the yield pillar method fails to solve the cutter-roof problems. This doesn't mean that the stress control method also fails. Actually the contrary is true, as discussed below. Limitation of the yield pillar method The paper illustrates clearly how poorly the yield pillar method performs in solving the problem. The reason for this failure is the lack of the protective stress envelope needed to stabilize the cutter roof. Unfortunately, the protective envelope cannot be formed properly without utilizing the stress control method of mining. Changing the pillar size does not make much difference in the roof stability. Stress measurement The key issue is how to form the global stress envelope to make the gate entries safe for production. Therefore, measuring the stress condition of the ground around the mine opening is critically important to solving the cutter-roof problem, regardless of the method applied. With regard to the stress measurement, there is a serious question as to the reported stress state of [6 i = -51.7 MPa (-7499 psi), G2 = -44.5 MPa (-6458 psi) and 63 = -30.8 MPa (-4465 psi)]. It is mechanically impossible to have such a stress state at any location in the mine ground since the known initial vertical stress [o,,] is less than or equal to 800 psi. There may be a large stress state in the [61] direction, but that is possible only at the expense of the [63] value. Having the above stress tensors in the mine is simply impossible. The questionable, reported stress values could be attributed to the application of the overcoring method, which tends to produce erroneously large stress values in the extremely nonelastic mine ground. Stress control method The paper should be considered as a major contribution demonstrating the limitation of the yield pillar method. At the same time, the paper does not disprove the stress control method. However, in comparing the paper with stress control studies conducted in other similar failing grounds, the stress control method appears to be able to solve the problem more effectively. Therefore it is advisable that the mine not give up its efforts to solve the problem. INTRODUCTION A company must have an objective, and that usually is to earn money. In some countries an objective can also be to reduce unemployment in an area or to develop nonindustrialized areas. Government-owned companies can also have as an objective that of serving the com¬munity. This discussion is limited to the consideration of normal companies wanting to earn money. Such an objective, however, has to be defined in more detail. It is not satisfactory only to maximize the total annual profit from, for example, a mining project. In comparison with most other branches, the mining in¬dustry is very capital intensive. When starting a new project, the mining company must invest a lot of money in mines, ore treatment plants, etc. It is normally many years before any income is received from the ore. Fig. 14 illustrates the payments for a new mining proj¬ect with an expected lifetime of 10 years. Whether this project is a profitable one depends on a lot of things. If the company has a shortage of money, it can be impossible to finance the project. Even if the company has enough money, the management may think that perhaps the project may not return the money fast enough. Such limitations will not be discussed here. Suppose that the company has internal funds from its own operation or can borrow them. Since the mining company must invest the money in advance, it is not satisfactory only to add all of the costs during the mine's lifetime and compare them with the total income during the lifetime. The company must include the time value of the capital. In this appendix, the basic investment theory neces¬sary to judge the profitability and costs of mining proj¬ects will be discussed. INVESTMENT THEORY Time Value of Money If a private person has a dollar and puts it into a bank, he or she will receive interest. If the interest rate is r%, the value after one year will be $(1 + r), after 2 years $(I + r)2 , etc. The interest rate represents the time value of money. If the same person wants to have $1 in the bank af¬ter one year, he or she has to put $(1 + r)-1 in the bank today. If the person wants $1 after 2 years, it is neces¬sary to put $(1 + r)-2 into the bank today, etc. So one dollar today is worth more than one dollar tomorrow. It is, of course, not correct to compare money at differ¬ent times since each dollar has a different value. It is necessary to transform all payments to the same point in time. That is called the calculation of the capital value of a cash flow, and to do this an interest rate is used. In the same way, the cash flow from a project like that shown in Fig. 14 can be translated to any other point in time. Most common is to translate all payments to the beginning of the mining period. That capital value is often called the present capital value. Interest Rate What interest rate will the company use? A com¬pany, just like an individual, has the basic alternatives of keeping its money in the bank and receiving interest, or borrowing money from a bank and paying an interest rate. The interest rate represents the time value of money for the company. If the company has a shortage of money, or many good potential investment projects, it has to use a higher interest rate than if it has a lot of money available. Most companies also increase their interest rate as a hedge against the risk involved by using money for uncertain investments, because of taxes, etc. Capital Value When the interest rate has been decided, it is possi¬ble to estimate the capital value of a project. Here the discussion will be limited to the estimation of present capital values. Suppose that one wants to know the present capital value of $1 (Fig. 15), which will be received after n years. To transform it n years back in time, one must multiply it by the factor (1 + r)-, where r is the inter¬est rate the company uses. Table 1 gives these factors for different years and interest rates. Example: At the end of year 5 a mining company has to invest $50 million in a new mine. What is the present capital value at the end of year 0? The company uses an interest rate of 15%a.

With the growing demand for energy, explora¬tion for uranium deposits has dramatically increased in the past few years. Since the early ages of uranium exploration, natural gamma ray logs has proved fast and convenient in locating and evaluating mineralized bodies. However, natural gamma ray logging is an indirect measure of the uranium content and in some circonstances, the radiometric signal can be 'altered in a very significant way. To check the presence of any distortion, statistical comparision of radiometric counts and chemical assay values for the same samples is generally performed. Of course in such studies, one inevitably mixes samples where the radiometric signal is really proportional to the uranium content and samples where this signal is influenced by many other sources or distorted before being recorded. Nevertheless, the average tendency leads to correction factors which are then applied to every radiometric reading in the deposit or portion of the deposit where the statistical comparison is made. To account for the "average" character of these correction factors, a parameter of uncertainty like a standard deviation of possible errors is associated to each corrected value. This parameter can be latter used in an ore reserve estimation when the weights assigned to samples should depend on the precision of their grade. The purpose of this paper is to present a new regression technique which can be used without any restrictive hypothesis like a normal or lognormal distribution. Different standard ways which can be used to statistically compare radiometric and chemical assay values for the same sample and to derive a correction factor for the latter will first be reviewed, after a general discussion of disequilibrium problems. The discussion and the examples will be restricted to the case of natural gamma ray logging in drill holes but the methods presented in this paper can also be applied to data from the radiometric probing of a working face or a truck load in an operating mine.

The mining workforce experiences high rates of hazardous noise exposure and hearing loss. However, previous studies have identified specific behavioral and attitudinal barriers that keep miners from effectively acting to prevent their own hearing loss. NIOSH has developed several new hearing loss prevention tools and interventions that specifically target these barriers to prevention. The NIOSH Hearing Loss Simulator addresses motivation to take action and knowledge about the consequences of noise exposure. The QuickFit earplug test device and QuickFitWeb online hearing protection tester address barriers to effective earplug and earmuff use by verifying at least 15 decibels of protection. The NIOSH Roll-Pull-Hold technique helps miners obtain better protection through an easy-to-remember set of steps that improves attenuation by 9 decibels. The ?Inquiring Ears Want to Know? fact sheet helps miners to understand audiograms and to use them to maintain their hearing health. Each of these interventions can be used within the context of a comprehensive hearing loss prevention program.

The implementation of NAFTA in January of 1994 was expected to have small but beneficial effects for the Mexican economy, mostly through increased investment flows. Mexico's mining industry was especially likely to benefit, as mineral investment funds would be diverted to the now safer Mexico and away from similarly endowed but more risky Latin American mineral economies. The results of the past two years have shown that it is governments and macroeconomic factors that influence investment flows, rather than the fine-tuning of trade flows through so called "free-trade" agreements.

This project took a watershed approach in the evaluation of water-quality impacts from past mining activities and current restoration projects in the Bear Butte Creek basin, a small and well defined drainage in a heavily mineralized area of the northern Black Hills. The basin contains numerous inactive and abandoned mines as well as a currently active heap-leach surface gold mine. Bear Butte Creek normally loses all of its discharge to sinkholes in the Madison Limestone aquifer and thus can affect the water quality of this regionally important water resource. Water-quality data were analyzed, stream surveys were conducted, and two abandoned mine restoration projects were monitored to evaluate the effectiveness of the watershed approach and to identify practical remediation techniques that could be applied to other watersheds. A geographic information system (GIS) was developed to organize information on stream quality, abandoned mine locations, and other geologic and hydrologic data. The watershed approach toward assessing and reclaiming abandoned mines appears to be effective when compared to a point-source approach that might improve water quality at specific sites but not result in significant overall improvement to the watershed because of adjacent sources.

The title of this session seems to have been picked especially for this paper. It is 1984, it is the morning after, and there is one monumental hangover among many if not most of the oil companies that have invested in mining in the past decade or so. How an oil company looks at mining depends on what time period you are talking about. A few years back around the time of investment this is what they were probably looking at: 1. A balance sheet of their own that was beginning to go wild, with many of their commodity prices having already seen increases of two, three, or four fold, and with no end in sight. 2. A need to invest their earnings someplace fast before the stockholders or the government got too interested. And that someplace should be in an industry where their own management skills could be applied. (Only a true cynic would suggest that this is a form of job security) 3. In mining there was an industry amazingly similiar to their own, one working with non-renewable natural resources, dealing with the same types of government agencies, and having the same type of critics and pressures from the general population. 4. An industry that was somewhat backward as compared with their own, and one where a generous ration of the capital and management skills so handsomely bestowed upon the oil industry could be used to great advantage.

To prevent mine floor heave, the mechanisms of floor heave must be fully understood. Based on the field study, the mechanisms of two types of floor heaves are analyzed in this paper. The mechanical models for the two types of floor heaves are developed. The floor heave can be predicted by the developed mechanical models and the control measures are recommended.

Recent scientific studies by researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) presented the worst-case explosion pressures that can develop if a methane-air mixture of a certain composition and dimension accumulates and ignites within a sealed area of a mine. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) issued its final rule on sealing of abandoned areas which considers potential explosion pressures and the risk of achieving the necessary conditions. The new MSHA seals regulation has increased the pressure design criteria an order of magnitude beyond the old standard of 140 kPa (20 psi) to 800 kPa (120 psi). However, there still are major knowledge gaps pertaining to seals and sealed areas including: (1) the composition of the sealed area atmosphere and how it changes in time and space, (2) explosion pressures that might actually develop within sealed areas, (3) engineering procedures to follow when designing seals and seal installations, and (4) guidelines to manage the atmosphere within sealed areas with monitoring or inertization. NIOSH has initiated a seals research program with collaborators from Safety in Mines Testing and Research Station (SIMTARS) in Australia, West Virginia University (WVU), the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), and USACE. Highlights of progress so far include: (1) construction of a gas explosion tube at Lake Lynn Laboratory for studying large methane-air explosions, (2) computer simulation of the fluid dynamics of high pressure methane-air explosions, (3) development of seal analysis methods considering construction materials, reinforcement and the seal foundation, and (4) development and testing of innovative seal designs that utilize inexpensive, readily-available rock rubble to resist high explosion pressures. NIOSH researchers aim to provide sound engineering guidelines to better address the new MSHA seal regulations. Major precious metals projects are underway in Australia, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, the Philippines and New Zealand. This article reviews the status of those projects. Included in this review are project location, reserves, method of resource exploitation, anticipated production, and other unique conditions. The article is limited to major precious metals projects in the Western Pacific region. This is not meant to negate the attractiveness or importance of the many other projects in that area. The geographical setting of these five countries are shown in [Fig. 1]. The gold output of the countries has increased dramatically during the 1980s. [Table 1] compares 1980 and 1988 production figures. The compound growth rate is 120%. That reflects the attractiveness of the region’s resource base as well as the impact of price increases, new exploration models and processing technologies, and changes in government policies. If the 10 projects discussed here are all brought onstream, their combined output - at about 130 t (4.17 million oz) - would amount to an increase of greater than 50% over 1988 production from this region. Table 2 shows indicative production levels for each of the 10 projects. Dollar amounts are in US currency unless otherwise specified. Australian dollars have been converted to US dollars at the rate of 1.28: 1.00.

Through the USGS's National Coal Availability program, coal resource appraisals have been completed for three 7.5-minute quadrangles (Willow Crossing, Colstrip East, Colstrip SW) in the Powder River Basin area of southeastern Montana. Available coal reserves (original reserves minus tonnages affected by current restrictions) vary from 44 to 70 percent of the original reserves. Major restrictions impacting each area also vary. In each area, one or two beds contain most of the reserves, but up to eleven beds contain available coal. The main beds in completed studies are the Knobloch, Rosebud, Sawyer and Flowers-Goodale. Three additional areas (six 7.5-minute quadrangles) are in preparation.

Our efforts at McNally, to find a better way to mechanically separate particles from liquid in a slurry have led to the development of two new centrifuges. The first unit utilizes a slotted opening screen as the filter media and retains all plus 200 Mesh and most of the 200 by 300 Mesh particles. The second unit is a solid bowl centrifuge with a novel method of removing the solids and delivers an effluent containing as little as 300 PPM solids in suspension. The first unit was designed to separate particles in the range of about 1 MM x 0 or smaller top size from the liquid slurry and produce solids having low surface moisture content, and a liquid concentrate containing a low percentage of solids. A prototype of this unit has been in the field undergoing tests for over two years. A few of these test results are shown in Tables I & 11. Testing has been mostly limited to the field of coal, how- ever this does not mean that the machine would accept only coal slurries. The machine has produced a dewatered product having as low as 5.5% surface moisture, and an effluent containing as low as 1.4% solids and handled slurries containing from 15 to 50% solids by weight.

A new sanitary sewer was installed in Pleasant Hill, California using microtunnelling methods. The project consisted of 693 meters of 1372 mm and 1981 mm concrete pipe. A Herrenknecht AVN 1200 was used to install the nominal 1372 mm pipe in three drives. The machine was then fitted with an oversized shield used to install the large diameter pipeline. This articulated shield allowed the excavation of a 2362 mm diameter hole with a 1524 mm machine-- a technique new to North America. This paper reviews the design considerations for the articulated shield and reports on the project challenges and solutions to overcome these challenges.

"There’s a bit of confusion and misinformation in the tunneling and underground construction industry regarding contractor joint ventures. If it was all so clear I would not have been "asked" to write this article. For those of us on the contractors’ side of the fence, joint venture business relationships have been a part of life for a long time. But even for contractors, there can be a bit of confusion, and it normally begins on bid day.How often have you received bid results and wondered (out loud, usually), "Who the hell are the Lake Mead Intake Constructors"? or the "Regional Connector Constructors"? Once you get past the name, you see that there is nothing behind Oz’s curtain other than a couple of contractors bidding and building work in an attempt to make a profit. So take a few minutes to read the rest of this, and I’ll do my best to dispel a few mythWhat is a joint venture?In some form or fashion, joint ventures are as old as industry itself. In the United States, some of the earliest (and largest) joint ventures involved the railroads and oil companies in the late 1800s. In the United States’ underground construction industry, joint venture names such as, Healy-Greenfield, Green and Winston, Gates & Fox and Walsh, Shea-Ball, Kenny-Paschen and S&M-Traylor bring back memories of successful joint ventures that operated over many projects.There are nearly as many definitions for joint ventures (JVs) as there are attorneys. A short and simple definition is, "an association of two or more companies engaged in a singular, for-profit business enterprise without actual partnership or incorporation." That’s it. Two or more contractors decide to partner up for one or more projects. One benefit of the JV relationship is that the partners typically do not need to file incorporation documents, or articles of organization within the state where they intend to operate. So it is a relatively easy business arrangement to pull together. Other benefits of the JV arrangement include: • Oportunities to gain new expertise and capacity.• The ability for firms to move into new geographic markets.• JV agreements are not long-term commitments.• Sharing of financial support for a project.• Sharing of financial risks within a project. between the partners.• Can complicate dispute resolutions with the owner and between partners"
