"Fostering positive community relations is a principal tenet of sustainable development, but conflict can test even the strongest of relationships. While conflict surrounding resource development projects has the potential to be destructive, it may actually pose opportunities for partnership and collaboration when managed effectively. It is therefore not only important for mineral resource professionals to recognize the financial and social costs associated with legal disputes among project stakeholders, but also for them to prioritize resolving social conflict using alternative channels that allow for win-win outcomes. A variety of dispute prevention and resolution techniques do exist, but successful practice is not yet the norm. Here we review the sources and consequences of social conflict in the context of mining projects, and discuss typical and alternative approaches to conflict management in light of their respective benefits and drawbacks. We also suggest implementation of conflict resolution lessons into resource-related university curricula as a critical step in the continued shift of the mining industry towards sustainable development. INTRODUCTION Social conflict is a recurring phenomenon in the human experience and serves as a critical mechanism for change [1-5]. It occurs when two or more parties perceive that their needs and interests are in direct competition with each other and believe they cannot be reasonably accommodated. Conflict over mineral resource activities, particularly the distribution of benefit and risk, has become an omnipresent issue throughout the world [6-7]. Contrary to common perception, however, conflict can be a positive, transformative encounter in some instances [2, 8-11]. For this to be possible, society and its acting agents must reconsider how to address conflict. What if conflict were only a challenge to try something different? It is well-understood that the mineral industries must manage an increasingly significant volume of social conflict [12-13], which can be a costly externality impacting all of whom are involved. We commonly consider conflict in a two-party sense, but this deeply over-simplifies the true number of stakeholders. Besides mining companies and community members, government policymakers and regulators, public interest groups, and judicial systems, to name a few, bear the social expenses of poorly-managed conflict [4, 6, 12, 14-22]. It is desirable for interested parties to participate actively in a constructive way to pursue their needs rather than contributing to adversarial relationships, operational problems, and legal costs [1, 4, 12]. Some mining companies are of course already working to develop more productive relationships with their stakeholders, but there is undoubtedly still a gap between ideal and common practices. This gap can inhibit collaboration and threaten the potential for mutually-beneficial resolutions to complex social issues [12]."

The Kidd Creek orebody is a massive, base metal deposit with widths up to 600 feet and a strike length of 2,200 feet. The orebody dips eastwards at 70° to 80° and is amenable to sub-level open stoping. Five distinct zones (Fig.1) based on structural wall rocks and ore type parameters occur within the orebody. These zones are: Zone 1 - Mainly copper stringer ore Zone 2 - Massive pyrite ore Zone 3 - Massive sphalerite and chalcopyrite Zones 4 and 5 - Are banded and variable in nature Compressive strengths vary from zone to zone with an average of 22,000 p.s.i. and highs of 40,000 p.s.i. The mine is developed from a ramp extending from surface to the 1600 foot level and a 24 foot diameter, 3050 foot vertical shaft with main levels at 400 foot intervals. Sub-levels at 100 foot vertical intervals are driven from the ramp. transverse and longitudinal pillars to support the crown pillar left under the open pit. The layout allows an opportunity to enlarge or reduce pillar sizes and also to introduce fill on any horizon should conditions warrant. It also offers a large number of operating stopes spread through the various ore zones giving good ore blending characteristics. All ore from the stopes is handled through drawpoints using Wagner ST8 scooptrams with an average one way haul length of 650 feet.

In order to simulate a grinding circuit, it is necessary to obtain valid mathematical models of the grinding mills and classifiers in the circuit. Several models of grinding mills Ova been proposed 1,2,3 and models of cyclone classifiers are available 4,5. Those models developed by Lynch et. al. 3,5 have been tested in the plant, so that some degree of reliability can be placed on them. Because of this, it is reasonable to assume that the Lynch models will apply for a given circuit, and then to test this assumption. Empirical modifications are made as necessary for a given situation. Usually, valid simulation models can be modified slightly to provide control models6,7. The purpose of this paper is to describe the results of an approach taken by Mular8 to obtain the Lynch models of parallel cyclone classifiers being used in the A-circuit of the new Strathcona Mill***.This was one of the projects undertaken by the fourth year Metallurgical Engineering Class of 1969, Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario, Canada, as part of their process design course which cooperates closely with the Canadian metallurgical industry.

Dimension stone includes a wide variety of natural materials that are put to an equally wide variety of uses. It is possible to classify dimension stone according to the end use to which the stone is put or according to the lithology of the stone. Both schemes are used by the United States Bureau of Mines in the annual Minerals Yearbook. The 1969 Yearbook lists 15 specific uses and has additional miscellaneous catagories. The same Yearbook lists five specific rock types or lithologies, and also includes a miscellaneous category. In a short presentation it would hardly be possible to list and define all these categories, much less discuss the evaluation of deposits with regard to all possible combinations. Besides, I am only slightly familiar with some of the uses and their requirements. I have therefore chosen to limit my remarks to some special problems in evaluating dimension stone that is to be cut and finished to specific sizes, tolerances, and finishes for use in buildings and some monuments. This use class is called cut stone in the Minerals Yearbook. In terms of dollar value it is the largest single use category. In 1969 the dollar value of cut stone was $29,122,000 which is more than twice the value of the next largest category. For those of you who are interested in other use applications of dimension stone I suggest that you start with recent articles by Bowles (1960), Currier (1960), and Barton (1968).

THE CIP PROCESS "IN THE RIGHT PLACE AT THE RIGHT TIME? After its tentative introduction to the precious metals mining industry in the earlier part of this century, the carbon in pulp (CIP) process has now come of age, and is the process of choice on all new gold mills. Well over 50 percent of all gold that is mined each year is recovered by adsorption on activated carbon, and the percentage will increase in the years ahead, when old mills using Merrill Crowe technology come to the end of their lives, and as the proportion of world gold production from low-grade resources increases. The pioneering process development work in this field, which was mainly concerned with carbon elution, was carried out by Zadra and his colleagues at the United States Bureau of Mines in the early 1950's (Zadra et al., 1950, 1952), and led to the commissioning of the first large-scale, industrial CIP plant, at the Homestake Mine in South Dakota, in 1973 (Hall et al., 1974). From there, the process spread rapidly, firstly in South Africa in the late 1970's. and then throughout the rest of the gold producing world in the 1980's. There were several factors that led to the meteoric (by gold industry standards) acceptance and successful implementation of this new technology into gold processing operations worldwide. Firstly, and perhaps most fortuitously, the development of the technology closely paralleled the 1968 release of the gold price from the rigid constraints of the $35/oz. gold standard. With the value of the metal allowed, for the first time in modern history, to fluctuate in response to free market supply and demand forces, the gold industry witnessed an unprecedented boom as the price of their commodity increased ten-fold in a remarkably short period of time. This had several important spin-offs as far as new process developments were concerned: The profits realized by established gold-mining companies increased enormously and, consequently, there was more to spend on research and development and exploration for new deposits.

The requirements of metals by modern society have created big challenges for mining engineers minerals processing engineers, metallurgical engineers and economists to produce these metals economically from mineral deposits which contain, with time, less and less value. The advances of science and technology allow, today, the exploitation of mineral deposits which only few years ago would not have been considered economical. However, there are limitations both on the minimum grade of recoverable values contained in the ore to be fed to a mill or on the concentrate to be smelted, and on the maximum content of "impurities" i.e. chemical elements which are difficult or expensive to refine from the ore, from the concentrate or from the metal. It is also known that the cost of treatment in a mill or in a smelter, for unit of metal contained in the ore or in the concentrate, increases as the grade of the recoverable values contained in them decreases and also if the content of impurities increases. The world's largest fluidized bed steam generator located at Rivesville, West Virginia is currently undergoing initial operation. This unit is designed to generate 3708 kg/s (300,000 Ib/hr) equivalent to 30 MWe of superheated steam while firing coal in a fluidized bed of limestone. Coal was first fired in this unit in December, 1976 and start up operation is progressing.

The Hama Mining Company owns and operates The Groveland Mine near Iron Mountain, in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The orebody is part of the Menominee Range of the Lake Superior District. The ore (generally known as Jasper taconite) contains an average of 35% iron ranging from 28% to 39% with an overall split of 60% magnetite and 40% hematite. The variations encountered throughout the orebody require a certain amount of blending to reduce feed changes to the mill. One of the variables which affects the crushers, as well as the mill, is the range of hardness which has a low of 7.9 and a high of 24.6 as measured by the Bond Twin pendulum impact and crushing technique. Reference is made to hardness only to point out its effect on crushing and wear rate variations. Over a period of time, these variables do, of course, average out. Mining of the low grade ore started in 1959 and has operated continuously to date. Preparation of the feed for conventional rod and ball mill grinding is accomplished by three stages of crushing. Reduction of crude ore is first passed through a 54 inch gyratory crusher; then through a secondary crusher; followed by two or three tertiary crushers in closed circuit with screens as production quotas require (Figure 1). Current demand to the crushers is about 5,200,000 tons of crude ore per year.

A field trial of by distributed optical fiber sensing (DOFS) technique was conducted at a longwall coal mine in Australia. This investigation was designed to assess the applicability of DOFS for microseismic monitoring in mining. The experiments used commercially available optic fiber cables, geophones and associated data acquisition instruments – a fiber interrogator and a seismic recorder. The fiber cable was deployed in a 300m deep hole and in trenches of approximately 3.5 km long on the ground surface around and across the longwall panel being mined. The results obtained from the experiments have shown that DOFS is able to acquire microseismic data with quality that is comparable to geophones. It has been proven that DOFS can achieve higher spatial resolution for seismicity sensing and higher accuracy for locating events than a geophone network. These characteristics are particularly useful for using DOFS to monitor ground vibrations associated with ground caving processes and rock fracturing events induced by mining and civil engineering. It was also found that far more additional seismic events were recorded by the fibers than by the geophones. Automated data discrimination and processing methods must be developed in order to utilize DOFS for real-time applications.

For the environmentally safe management of the sulphidic waste rock produced from the Stratoni mining facilities, TVX Hellas has examined, within the frame of the funded European research program ROLCOSMOS, the effectiveness of an alternative rehabilitation scheme involving the segregation of the sulphide rich components of waste rock and the engineered application of alkaline additives. The examined waste rock management scheme was evaluated with laboratory test work followed by pilot-scale field applications. In this paper, the results from the two-year monitoring period of the pilot scale application are presented.

This study aims to investigate the effect of combined mechanical and ultrasonic milling on the size reduction of talc. Firstly, the talc sample was wet ground in a stirred media mill for five different times (30, 60, 90, 120, and 150 min), and the optimum result was subsequently achieved with treatment by ultrasonication. The effects of amplitude (20, 35, and 50 μm), solid content (2.5, 5, 7.5, and 10%), and sonication time (60, 120, and 240 min) on the sizes of the final product were investigated. The pre-milling by wet grinding caused a decrease in the grinding resistance of talc. Sequential ultrasonic treatment, which was applied to the talc sample, generated smaller particles in comparison to those acquired by stirred media milling alone. Experimental results were assessed based on the product particle size (d10, d50), reduction ratio, and specific energy consumption. Submicron particles prepared by ultrasonic treatment were perfectly stable compared to stirred media milling alone as investigated in terms of particle size. In addition, the effects of mechanical and ultrasonic milling on structural properties of talc particles were characterized by XRD analysis.

Talc mining in Vermont has in recent years undergone a progressive change in mining methods and in mining equipment. Underground mines have been phased out except in special circum- stances, and continuous mining machines (CMM?s) have replaced conventional drill/blast mining systems. Talc mining in Vermont began in the late 1800?s, and has continued without interruption to date. Beneficiation (flotation) has been applied since the early 1930?s, and has provided special products for toiletries and other markets. At the present time, there are two active companies that have evolved from the cumulative absorption of nearly ten smaller operations.

Industrial-scale test results indicate superior metallurgical performance of column flotation compared to conventional cell flotation for copper cleaning. A technical comparison of bubble generation systems for column flotation is made. Two types of bubble generation systems are considered: the filter-cloth type spargers and the Turbo-Air® sparger, which utilizes an air-water mixture fed to the column through injection tubes. Examples of the improved technical performance available with an external sparger system are presented using data from plant tests conducted for specific applications with several different mineral ores. INTRODUCTION Column flotation is now a valuable unit operation which mineral processing engineers employ in the design and operation of flotation circuits in nearly all mineral applications. The acceptance of columns in the mid- 1980s by the minerals industry was paralleled by a rigorous approach to developing a scientific understanding of the design, scale- up, and operation of column flotation units (Finch and Dobby, 1990). Since then, column flotation has become a standard unit of the cleaning stage in many new mineral concentrator projects and has replaced older mechanical cells to improve process efficiency. The size of column cells has continued to grow from the initial 0.9- to 2.1 -meter diameter range, and it is not uncommon to find column cells today being 2.7- to 3.6-meters in diameter. With the success of the smaller units, the scale-up to larger cells has been proven and demonstrated by the performance of the large-diameter cells (Murdock and Wyslouzil. 1991). The use of columns in flotation circuits has also been accompanied by developments in modelling. control, and optimization of column performance (Lee et al, 1991). The bubble generation system is the heart of the operation of column flotation cells. The most common methods for generating bubbles can be divided into two types: the internal and external spargers. Internal spargers are typically a porous material, such as sintered glass, porous rubber or filter-cloth, or maybe a single- or multi-nozzle sparger. External spargers implies that a gas and a liquid (either water or slurry) are brought into contact outside the column and that mixture is then introduced into the column. Several types of external spargers are available today, and innovative designs for externally mounted air sparging systems have been a significant factor in the successful application of columns. The aim of the present paper is to show how a mathematical modeling of a creeping rock and that of an yieldable lining can allow us to obtain an optimization of the lining design and generally of the whole procedure and sequence of excavation-lining application. We follow the procedure presented by Cristescu (1989) Chap. 13, and Cristescu et al.(1987); for some other approaches see the literature mentioned, for instance, by Ladanyi and Gill (1988). We have in mind to describe the creep of the rock, i.e. the tendency of the tunnel to close in time, and to take into account that the lining itself may be deforming, i.e. possesses some rheological behavior. We start from the well known fact that "intelligent" lining, which are yielding to the pressure of the rock, may be much more successful in supporting creeping rocks than excessively strong, badly designed supports which are unable to resist to pressure of the rock, though these are oversized supports (too strong, too stiff, installed too early, etc.). In order to optimize the lining to be used for a certain rock, it is absolutely necessary to study in the laboratory the main mechanical properties of that specific rock and to formulate for it a reasonably simple mathematical model. Standard triaxial test results are quite enough to determine the model for the rock, combined with some creep tests which have to reveal the long-term behavior of rock (the so-called rheological model). What concerns the lining, we consider several kinds of linings existing today, for which a mathematical model was also formulated. One shows which is the interaction between the creeping rock? and the yielding lining and how can it be formulated in mathematical terms. Once written in mathematical terms, an optimization of the lining design and that of the excavation layout and support application sequence is possible. We will try to make the exposure as simple as possible, avoiding details and having in mind to give only a sketch of the problem, while the mathematical details could be worked out quite easy.

Corrosion and product contamination have been difficult problems for extractive metallurgy industries in the U.S. because of the highly active chemicals used. During the past twelve years, other industries, particularly the chemical and paper segments, began to combat this problem with some degree of success using newer materials of construction, including reinforced plastics. These materials are made by combining a corrosion resistant thermosetting resin with a glass fiber reinforcing material and are used to con¬struct hoods, stacks, blowers, tanks, towers, pipe, and equipment of the most complex configurations. For service in contact with aggressive chemicals, the equipment is most often fabricated with the bisphenol-A fumarate polyester resins because of their resistance to corrosive attack. Data from both laboratory work and case histories of field applications are presented-for many common chemicals found in extractive processes. Information is also presented concerning design standards and recommended construction procedures

Neutron capture prompt gamma-ray analysis provides the best method for on-line analysis of the elemental composition of large volumes of bulk material. This paper summarizes the Monte Carlo models which simulate the radiation transport within two such analyzer systems; namely, the borehole configuration and the conveyor belt configuration. The models are useful in the design optimization of the analyzer systems, in minimizing the amount of experimental calibration data for calibrating these analyzers, and in investigating the detection sensitivity for different elements. The computational scheme in these models is made extremely efficient by the use of various powerful variance reduction methods and by efficient data management. Experimental verifications of the two models carried out in the laboratory indicate very good agreement with the Monte Carlo results.

The schlieren technique describes an optical analysis method designed to enhance light distortions caused by air movement. The ability to visualize air flow has significant implications for analyzing underground mine ventilation systems, including the enhancement of surveys and models. Currently, traditional schlieren methods are impractical underground. Background-oriented schlieren (BOS) provides a solution to this problem. BOS requires two primary components, a professional quality digital camera and a schlieren background. A schlieren background is composed of a varying contrast repetitive pattern, such as black and white stripes. This background allows the camera’s sensor to capture minor light diffractions, such as those caused by air flow. Although BOS shows great potential for ventilation analysis, sensitivity is an issue. This paper seeks to validate the BOS technique for imaging flow through a regulator by comparing BOS images with traditional schlieren images. This paper also outlines initial experimental efforts used for the validation.

In order to float coarse sylvite particles, Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan Inc. (PCS) uses amines and extender oil (Esso 904 oil). Since the content of polycyclic aromatic (PCA) compounds in Esso 904 oil is high, PCS has sought a suitable replacement. Various types of physicochemical tests, including measurements of the electrokinetic potential of emulsified oil droplets, oil/water interfacial tension and wetting of KCl plates by oil, did not provide conclusive results. However, captive bubble contact angle measurements on KCl plates in brine in the presence of flotation agents correlated reasonably with the flotation response. A few non-toxic oils were found to provide good results in the flotation experiments and are now tested under industrial conditions.

High-grade uranium ores of Cluff Lake and Key Lake mines from the province of Saskatchewan in Canada are treated with nitric and hydrochloric acids with the objective of leaching 230 Th and 226Ra simultaneously with uranium to produce environmentally safe mill tailings, h is found that optimum conditions for uranium leaching are 50°C, 4 h, 30% solids in leach slurry and an acid concentration of 1 mol/L for HNO, for both the ores. In the case of HCl, a 3 mol/L acid concentration is needed and addition of an oxidant is required because otherwise 230Th and 226Ra extractions remain poor.
