After Abe Lee discovered gold (in April 1860) near the site of present-day Leadville, Colorado, he and is group staked nearly all of California Gulch with "speculative claims." They did so in an effort to grab any property that might be potentially profitable. But the plan did not work. New prospectors demanded a miners' meeting, from which arose the official "Bylaws of California Mining District, California Gulch, Arkansas River." These bylaws, adopted on May 12, 1860, established provisions as to the number, size and type of claims that could be filed. Fair laws invited more newcomers. By mid-summer, 5,000 people with tents and wagons were scattered from one end of the gulch to the other.Among the earliest arrivals to the region that spring were Horace Austin Warner Tabor and his wife, Augusta. H.A.W. Tabor, who was to become a pillar in the development of Leadville, arrived at California Gulch during a food shortage. He sacrificed his oxen so that hungry miners could eat. By doing so, he immediately became the friend of many. Augusta established a little store where she sold her baked goods and provided meals. Like most of the men, Horace prospected the surrounding hills. He only did so, however, for a short time. California Gulch yielded more than $5 million in gold during the next five years. By 1866, however, the placer gold was gone and most of the miners had packed up and left. Charles J. Mullen and Cooper Smith, who were grubstaked by a Philadelphian named J. Marshall Paul, found a new, rich lode at the Printer Boy Mine in 1868. It was the first underground gold mine in the Leadville area and marked the transition from surface mining to underground hard rock mining. Its discovery created a new but modest flurry of activity. Heavy black sand covered the region and made gold mining difficult. In 1875 William Stevens and Alvinus Wood decided to have the sand assayed. They discovered that it contained 15 ounces per ton of silver and was rich in carbonate. Stevens and Wood kept their find a secret for nearly two years. When the word spread in late 1877, the silver boom was on. In 1878 prospectors, merchants and others trickled into town from all directions. Dr. David H. Dougan closed his office. in Alma, crossed Mosquito Pass and set up shop in Leadville. Nobody seemed to need a doctor, however, and Dougan sat in his office for 28 days without a customer. On the 29th day he received word that there had been a mining accident and he was needed immediately. -That was the begin¬ning of his illustrious career in Leadville. Dougan was a successful physician, became mayor in 1881 and was later president of the Carbonate National Bank. Leadville was a simple community of log structures in 1878. By June of the following year, however, it had blossomed considerably. According to Cass Carpenter, as of May 1,1879, Leadville had "...19 hotels, 41 lodging houses, 82 drinking saloons, 38 restaurants, 13 wholesale liquor houses, 10 lumber yards, 7 smelting and reduction works, 2 sampling works for testing ores, 12 blacksmith shops, 6 livery stables, 6 jewelry stores, 3 undertakers and 21 gambling houses where all sorts of games are played as openly as the Sunday School sermon is conducted." Additionally, there were 36 brothels. When George E. King and other architects arrived, Leadville took on an air of elegance and sophistication. In sharp contrast to some of the Victorian-style, gingerbread-laced homes in Leadville, its suburbs were comprised of many tenement shacks and plain cabins mixed with a few commercial buildings, many mines and smelters. Mines sprinkled the area east of Leadville like pepper from a pepper shaker. Wherever there was a cluster of mines, a camp usually sprang up. Most were very close together. South of Leadville the giant Arkansas Valley lead smelter sprawled out between Stringtown and Bucktown in an area known as Smelter Valley. Founded in 1879 as the Billing and Eilers Smelter, the Arkansas Valley plant was operated by the American Smelting and Refining Company. Several other smelters operated in the vicin¬ity. In April 1878, Horace Tabor grubstaked prospectors August Rische and George Hook. For $64 worth of supplies and tools, he was guaranteed a one-third interest in their findings. Rische and Hook discovered the Little Pittsburg (often spelled Pittsburgh) Mine and made Tabor an instant millionaire. Tabor once purchased a "salted" mine, the Chrysolite; but instead of considering it a bad deal, he further developed the property and struck rich silver ore. Later, Tabor purchased the Matchless Mine for $117,000, possibly the only investment he made without partners. During its peak years, the Matchless yielded $1 million worth

The past year has been a strange one for the fertilizer industry of the world and the United States. Listening to news stories, you would think the sky is falling on the world's agriculture and probably conclude that we should have had an exceptionally poor fertilizer season. In some respects, we did. Prices were low, profits were low, and in some cases nonexistent, but volume was good. We heard much in the press about the farmers' credit crunch. The truth of the matter is that only 6.6 percent of the U.S. farmers have debt-equity ratios of 70 percent or more, and a large percentage of our farmers have absolutely no debt but operate entirely on their own cash assets.

INTRODUCTION With the introduction of large diameter hole drilling to underground mining, a need for the development and utilization of new blasting technology has arisen. This new technology has resulted in more efficient blasting and in easier and cheaper mining. The application of spherical charges to the crater blasting method is an im¬portant part of this technology. Spherical charges, or their geometric equivalent, make for highly efficient use of explosives in the cratering application. Their geo¬metrical configuration, normally a length :diameter ra¬tio of <6:1, limits their charge weight size. For exam¬ple in a 165-mm (61/2-in.) hole a spherical charge weighs approximately 34 kg (75 lb). These dimensional and weight restrictions require careful engineering design and control in the production application. Strathcona mine, a large tonnage mechanized cut¬and-fill and blasthole stoping operation located on the north rim of the Sudbury Basin, has successfully em¬ployed the crater blasting method in production blasting for the past two and a half years (as of 1979). As a result, this method, using spherical charges, has made possible the development and implementation of a verti¬cal retreat blasthole mining method which is being used for rib pillar recovery. The crater method used at Strathcona essentially in¬volves blasting off horizontal slices of ore into an under¬cut while retreating vertically to the pillar overcut elevation. Loading and priming of the holes is achieved from the overcut and the blasted muck is recovered by load¬haul-dump (LHD) units through a drawpoint system. Valuable experience on the behavior and performance of explosives in large diameter holes has been gained in both the operating and engineering fields from the appli¬cation of this blasting method. It has been used in drop raising and is currently being evaluated for use in pri¬mary stoping operations. Also, serious consideration is being given to its use for the recovery of post pillars in mined-out and backfilled cut and fill stopes. The method has significant advantages over conven¬tional methods of pillar recovery from economic, ground control, and safety points of view. These include cost benefits due to a minimum stoping development, less ground support, reduced labor requirements, and faster mining rate. Research on the blasting mechanism indi¬cated the method should result in less damage to fill walls than would be normally expected with conven¬tional longhole or large diameter hole cylindrical blast¬ing (benching). This is primarily due to the limited charge weight per delay because of the size dimensions of a spherical as compared with a cylindrical charge and also because the large diameter holes experience less de¬viation than standard-sized longholes. Experience has shown that wall damage has been minimized with the use of this method. The safety aspects of the working environment are also improved as there is no require¬ment for manpower to go under exposed backs after blasting, which is a significant improvement over the cut-and-fill method. CRATERING THEORY General The term cratering, in blasting, is applied to the for¬mation of a surface cavity in a material as the result of detonating an explosive charge in that material. This blasting concept was initially used as a tool in the eval¬uation of explosives performance; however, it has been utilized more recently on surface and to a lesser extent in underground blasting operations. Explosive charges used in crater method are nor¬mally spherical or the geometric equivalent, as research into the application of this breakage mechanism to rock indicates that spherical charges or their equivalent pro¬duce optimum results. In blasting practice, spherical charges have been defined as having a length to diameter (L: D) ratio of 4:1 or less, and up to, but not exceeding a L: D = 6:1. Thus, for holes 165 mm (61/2 in.) diam, a charge 165 mm (61/2 in.) diam, and 990 mm (39 in.) in length would constitute a spherical charge. Crater Testing Crater testing for underground application is nor¬mally accomplished by drilling smaller than production sized horizontal holes into drift walls, placing relatively small charges of explosives in the holes at various depths of burial, firing the charges, and measuring the results. The results are scaled to develop charge weight size and depth of burial parameters for production hole sizes. In theory, this procedure is valid and is appli¬cable for surface blasting; however, in underground applications where the craters are inverted, there is some question as to whether extrapolation of the test results is appropriate. As well as the fact that craters are in¬verted with resultant gravity stresses, testing is often done in a waste rock drift where the properties differ from those in ore rock. There is also some question as to whether a 51 or 76-mm (2 or 3-in.) diam charge behaves similarly to a 165-mm (61/2-in.) charge in a confined borehole. Crater testing at Strathcona involved drilling 76-mm (3-in.) diam holes at various depths ranging from 1 to 3 m (3 to 10 ft). The test holes were drilled in the wall of a predominately waste drift as well as in a stope wall. Charges were placed at various depths of burial, were confined, fired, and the results measured. Although the results were somewhat erratic, possibly because of the aforementioned reasons, they did provide guidelines for basic design for production application. Scrubbing is gaining increasing recognition as a valuable tool in the treatment of Mesabi Range intermediate iron ores. In general, the earliest washing plants included log-washers in their various flowsheets. While log-washers certainly did impart a degree of scrubbing to the crude ore, such treatment bears little resemblance to the type of scrubbing being practiced today. At the time that these early plants were erected, only the true wash-ores were being processd. ("Wash-ores" are defined as crude ores in which relatively coarse chunks of almost completely liberated iron are found in a matrix of loosely-consolidated fine sand.) To treat ores of this type, sizing at approximately 65 to 100 mesh was sufficient to produce a merchantable concentrate. As crudes were being treated in which there was little "locking" of iron and silica, log-washers tended to disappear and large screens and classifiers took their place in Mesabi range flowsheets. The "screening and classification" type of flowsheet &apos;had its greatest usage in the 1945-55 period, generally speaking. During this same period, many operators found it necessary to supplement the "wash-ore" type flowsheet with heavy-media treatment.

This paper reports measurement results for radio frequency (RF) propagation around 90° corners in tunnels and underground mines, for vertically, horizontally and longitudinally polarized signals. Measurements of signal power attenuation from a main entry into a crosscut were performed at four frequencies — 455, 915, 2450 and 5800 MHz — that are common to underground radio communication systems. From the measurement data, signal power loss was determined as a function of signal coupling from the main entry into the crosscut. The resultant power loss data show there are many factors that contribute to power attenuation from a main entry into a crosscut, including frequency, antenna polarization and crosssectional entry dimensions.

In 1965 Hoogovens was looking for additional capacity for burden preparation in the order of 2,5 to 3 million metric tons per annum of some kind of optimal blast furnace ore feed. In principle four solutions offered them-selves for further investigation: 1. purchase of screened ore and/or run of mine ores with the provision of a corresponding ore screening capacity on the blast furnace site; 2. manufacture of sinter; 3. purchase of pellets; 4. manufacture of pellets. After studying the technological, technical, economical and commercial factors Hoogovens decided for the last mentioned possibility. Before taking this decision not only a great number of different mixtures of iron ore were tested, but during a long period in one of the big blast furnaces a number of tests were also executed with purchased pellets from South and North America. It was found, that using 50% acid pellets with 40% basic sinter a coke rate saving of 25 kg per ton hot metal (50 lbs/net THM) and a production gain of 15% could be obtained as compared with a full sinter practice. With some pellets it became clear, that due to properties, commonly referred to as swelling, we got very poor furnace performances; so in studying the production of pellets, pellet quality should be regarded as the most important aspect of the problem.

"In recent years the fact that mining tailings cause serious environmental problems resulted in increasing number of studies about their disposal, storage and usability in various areas. Therefore the new studies about using the tailings for some purposes such as using in shotcrete or producing concrete have been increasing recently. The study is focused on applicability of tailings for producing shotcrete. Under this scope it is considered that mining tailings can bring many advantages in case of that they are used instead of sand, silt or fine aggregate in shotcrete applications. Most important advantages can be listed as decreasing shotcrete cost, decreasing amount if mining tailings to be disposed and the contribution to be provided on sustainable production of sources. The main objective of this study is the investigation of using mine tailing instead of fine aggregate in shotcrete. In this study, 10 shotcrete designs in different proportions were formed, and properties of the mixtures were identified. Then, the experimental results were statistically analyzed, the effects of the amount of the tailing material used on shotcrete properties were presented, and empirical approaches that can be used for the estimation of these properties were developed. INTRODUCTION The disposal of high amount mine tailing on the surface is caused a lot of problems in terms of environmental impact. Unfortunately, it is known that classic disposal techniques such as tailing dam cannot provide a solution these problems. The tailing dams which are usually used in the disposal of mining tailings bring along many problems in terms of cost, environment, and human health. So mine tailings are used in different production such as shotcrete. This technique is becoming increasingly common during recent years. The usability of mine tailings in brick and concrete production instead of cement and fine aggregate has been studied by many studies [1-4]. This situation has been promising for the usability of tailings in shotcrete which is commonly used for ground support especially in tunnels. Shotcrete (sprayed concrete) is applied mainly for construction of tunnels, shafts, renovation works and strengthening of slopes. Main advantage of shotcrete is fast development of strength, which quickly ensures stability of strengthened structure [5]. Shotcrete can be defined as spraying the grout consisting of water, aggregate, cement and optional additive mixture on the desired surface with a compressed air. According to the definition of the American Concrete Institute (ACI), it is the spraying of sprayed grout or concrete on a surface at high speed with air pressure [6]. In recent years, the use of shotcrete for the support of underground excavations is decreased in the mining industry. The design of shotcrete support for underground excavations is a very imprecise process. Strength and pumpability properties of shotcrete are very significant for determining suitable shotcrete design. Flow characteristics of the shotcrete must be determined for pumpability and fluidity of the material."

This paper compiles the research work conducted by the Spokane Research Laboratories in the investigation of shotcrete within underground mines to the applied design of ground support for the operator. It looks at the design methodology in terms of employing shotcrete as a fabric to confine the rock mass between the individual bolts as dictated by empirical charts. The failure mechanism in terms of its implication on design is presented with respect to the design of 6m wide tunnels for temporary and permanent openings within weak rock masses. This is reflected by field observations that relate laboratory tests to the onset of failure for the operator in order to provide guidelines for design and monitoring. This is coupled with guidelines for safe entry in terms of cure times as well as the understanding of the behaviour of the shotcrete in terms of fibres and the overall strengths that result with respect to the design of the mine openings. This enables the operator to better understand his workplace thereby provide a safer work environment.

Faulty insulators on mine trolley/track haulageways may allow the flow of leakage currents into the mine roof and ultimately result in combustion of the local roof material. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL), has devised a passive means to detect overheating insulators on direct current systems. The detector consists of a spring-loaded cartridge that ejects a reflective streamer of white Teflon tape when subjected to elevated temperatures. The cartridge assembly can be easily installed over the outer metallic shell of an existing trolley line insulator. If an insulator overheats due to ground leakage currents, the visible streamer alerts mine personnel traveling on the haulageway.

Flotation columns and their variations are increasingly replacing conventional cells in mineral processing circuitry. While the operational characteristics of columns differ from those of conventional cells, the same scale-up methodologies are being employed in design. This practice may be attributed to poor understanding of the factors controlling throughput. The use of tall flotation columns is frequently justified on the requirement for increased particle residence time. It is shown that longer particle residence times in the column cell alone do not translate into increased recoveries. Throughput data from several industrial flotation column installations is presented. An attempt at using dimensional analysis to provide scale-up methodology for the factors controlling column throughput is made.

Successful longwall gate entry design requires control of both vertical and horizontal stresses. Vertical, or overburden, stresses are most severe in the tailgate where they are concentrated by longwall panel extraction. Horizontal stresses, which are generally tectonic in origin, can be highly destructive during the development and headgate phases of longwall mining. The goal of this paper is to present the current state-of-the-art in detecting and controlling horizontal stresses. The information presented was collected through site investigations at 45 U.S. longwalls and an international literature review. The paper begins with a discussion of the present knowledge of regional in situ stress fields in the U.S. A review of available underground stress measurements from coal mines is presented, along with data collected by structural and petroleum geologists. The combined evidence indicates that a persistent ENE-EW trending stressfield is present throughout the eastern coalfields. Experience with horizontal stress in longwall mines is addressed next. The paper focuses on the northern Appalachian region, where the effects of horizontal stress have been most evident. Three case histories are discussed in detail, and the solutions each developed are highlighted. Observations made in the Southern Appalachian, Alabama, and Illinois coalfields are also described.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines pioneered the use of borehole deformation gauges and overcoring techniques to measure in situ stress. These measurements provide input to structural mine design and support selection for specific geologic conditions. This paper presents recent stress measurements in a western U.S. coal mine where the orientation of the stress field remained relatively unchanged over distances of several kilometers. The horizontal stress magnitude increased with depth of cover and in relation to major geologic structures. Local variations in roof stress profiles were used to develop generic models relating stress arching to strata stiffness and the inelastic behavior of mine roof.

DOE recently funded 21 projects under the solicitation by its Environmental Restoration and Waste Management Division. This project is combining the expertise of an interdisciplinary team of researchers with that of three manufacturers to isolate nuclear waste storage sites using remote longwall mining. The concept is being pursued in Germany, too. This paper will present the conceptual approach to the project and discuss the problems in transferring longwall mining technology to nuclear waste containment.

INTRODUCTION The Washington Camp - Duquesne mining district is located on the east flank of the Patagonia Mountains, 98 kilometers south of Tucson and within 5 kilometers of the International border (Figure 1). Since the development of high-grade silver and copper ores by settlers in 1862, the Washington Camp - Duquesne district has yielded an estimated 450,000 metric tons of ore. The mined ores averaged 8% zinc, 2% copper, 3% lead and 124 grams of silver. REGIONAL GEOLOGY The Patagonia batholith, of Laramide age, crops out in the core of the Patagonia Mountains intruding Precambrian granite, Paleozoic sediments and Mesozoic igneous, volcanic and clastic rocks. This granodioritic batholith lies in a northwest-trending zone of Laramide plutonic rocks, which can be traced for a distance of 320 kilometers from the Nacozari district in Sonora, Mexico to the Silver Bell Mountains west of Tucson, Arizona. Several major porphyry copper systems occur within this plutonic belt including the Red Mountain deposit found at the northern end of the Patagonia Mountains. Data from more than 80 mineral deposits within the Patagonia Mountains show metal zoning symmetrical to the Patagonia granodiorite (Graybeal, 1975). Disseminated copper-molybdenum deposits occur within the batholith. Pyrometa-somatic, limestone replacement and vein deposits of copper, lead, zinc and silver occur in the wallrocks adjacent to the. granodiorite and epithermal manganese-silver deposits occur at the outer periphery of economic mineralization. GEOLOGY OF THE WASHINGTON CAMP - DUQUESNE DISTRICT Stratigraphy Nearly 900 meters of miogeosynclinal Permian and Pennsylvanian sediments are exposed in the district (Figure 2). In addition, 700 meters of older Paleozoic rocks crop out 6 kilometers north of the district. The Paleozoic rocks occur in fault contact with a sequence of Triassic-Jurassic pyroclastic and flow rocks, ranging in composition from latite to rhyolite.

The dielectric properties and flotability of different ranks of Argonne Premium Coal samples are presented. The flotability of different ranks of coal are correlated with the dielectric properties and intrinsic moisture (or bound water) content. Measured dielectric properties of as-received coals and other constituents are incorporated into a mixture equation to calculate the dielectric properties of bound water present in the different ranks of coal. The nature of bound water present in low-rank hydrophilic coals is significantly different from that present in high-rank hydrophobic coals. The water molecules present in low-rank lignite have an oriented dipole-dipole interaction and are tightly bound to the surface. For high-rank coals, the water molecules are not bound to the surface and have a randomly distributed clathrate ice-like structure. Controlled thermal treatment can modify the structural nature of bound water present in low-rank hydrophilic coals and increase their flotability.

In three recent publications, Klimpel et al (1988) and Klimpel and Hansen (1988, 89), the theory and invention process behind the identification of two new classes of sulfide mineral collectors were summarized. These two new families can be represented by the 111 generalized formulate: R1-S-R1 -NRI III (denoted as the F-series chelation family) and R-S-R or R -CHSCH-R (denoted as the S-series redox family). The influence of systematic changes in the various R groupings on laboratory batch flotation cell tests has been covered in the above references and will not be repeated in this paper. In particular, the recent article by Klimpel and Hansen (1989) should be studied as a research introduction to this paper.

Poland lies at the junction of three geologic provinces: the East European Precambrian platform, the Middle European Paleozoic platform, and the Alpine orogenic belt comprising the Carpathian Mountains. However most of the rocks that contain mineral deposits and many of the recently explored and mined deposits are commonly hidden under thick overburden, sometimes up to over 500 m thick. The discovery of these mineral deposits was due to the combination of geologists talents for inference and the keen interpretation of geophysical data ultimately tested by drilling. Examples of such use of the state-of-the-art geology include the following: 1. Sedimentologic and paleogeographic reconstructions led to the discovery of 8.8 Gt of bituminous coal under 500 m of Jurassic and Cretaceous cover in the Lublin basin, 2. Tectonic and paleogeografic data suggested a potential for discovery of burried Upper Permian copper de-posits on the Foresudetic monocline; subsequent exploration discovered 75 Mt of copper and 0,17 Mt of silver, 3. Geological interpretation of gravity and magnetic da-ta combined with sedimentologic data and regional subsur-face geology resulted in the location of 1.3 Gt of Fe-Ti-V ore in the Precambrian basement of northeastern Poland under -500 m of cover 4. A combination of metallogenic theory and geological interpretation of regional geophysical mapping led to the discovery of Caledonian-Hercynian granites and grano-diorites with accompanying porphyry-type Mo-W-Cu ores below 300 m cover on the northeastern border of the Upper Silesian coal basin 5. Tectonic reconstructions based on gravity and seismic data combined with theory on the origin of native sulfur led to the discovery of 1.0 Gt of native sulfur under cover up to 300 m thick. Five deposits were found at the northern margin of the Carpathian Foredeep. The other deposits found include lignite, polyhalite, lead-zinc ores.
