The Carajás Hills are in Brazil's Eastern Amazon, between the Araguaia and Xingu rivers, and parallels 5° and 7° Latitude South. A location map is given in Fig. 1. It is an area of low mountains (maximum altitude 900 meters), covered by the Amazon rain forest. Annual average temperature is 25°C, ranging from 31°C (maximum) to 19°C (minimum). Annual rainfall averages 2,000mm. Although it rains throughout the whole year, heavy rains occur from December through March. At the beginning of the 20's, Brazilian explorationists made brief geological descriptions of the area. Due to the thick soil, scarce fresh rock outcrops and the tropical forest covering a completely unpopulated area, detailed geological studies were difficult and reconnaissance expeditions were limited to the river margins.

The operating mine is dynamic, everchanging, and a continuous moving target. The only way to effectively manage such a creature is to be able to evaluate the cost of operation over short enough time periods that rapid effective controls can be implemented before loss can erode the marginal profits in todays market place. Such short term evaluations can provide the basis for the long range planning that can keep an operation healthy in the future. The spreadsheet programs on small computers (PC's) offer the possibility of such evaluation by accumulating data in a useable format, providing timely cost reporting and providing a tool for use in evaluating the day to day alternative choices of the real mining world.

When discussing what Coal Mine Safety in the future will be, it is important to examine three areas which at present provide significant parameters to the industry. These three areas are: 1) Safety improvements in mining equipment; 2) Labor-management relations; and, 3) The politics of coal mine safety. EQUIPMENT Over the past several decades significant safety improvements have been made in the types of equipment now in use in most operations. Many of these improvements have evolved through mandates from either the U. S. Bureau of Nines, MESA, MSHA; and in some instances, the states. Cabs and canopies are examples of federal mandates while the use of ATRS initially was a state mandate.

During April 1967 a Frasch sulfur mine was placed in operation near Fort Stockton, Pecos County, in West Texas. This was the first Frasch mine to recover native sulfur from a deposit not associated with the caprock of a salt dome. Since 1967 two additional mines have been opened in west Texas, another one near the first at Fort Stockton and a third one near Orla in Culberson County (Figure 2). Recoverable reserves at the Culberson County mine are estimated to be 57,000,000 long tons of native sulfur (Zimmerman and Thomas, 1969). Total recoverable reserves at the three mines probably exceed 60,000,000 long tons, Studies of the geochemical cycle of native sulfur mineralization in test Texas indicate an origin similar to the deposits on salt domes although the geologic framework is different. A comparison of the geologic setting of the west Texas deposits with the deposits in the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics as reported in the literature, reveals many similarities. Good afternoon gentlemen. It is always a pleasure to talk about a subject dear to our hearts--the high speed transfer of bull; materials. Specifically, today we will be reviewing the engineering approach to an age old problem of ship loading and unloading. You may be puzzled by the title of this paper and we will attempt to explain this for you--particularly the use of the words "New Era", since high speed automated facilities are nothing new to the material handling engineer. The new era in material handling designs refers to an all out concerted effort to provide custom engineering tailored to specific operations and economic requirements of the client. It shuns hardware type of engineering wherein existing machines and devices are dusted off and reapplied. It provides automation when automation can be justified and it exemplifies the application of systems engineering to solve specific problems.

INTRODUCTION The Magma mine, located at Superior, AZ, some 100 km (60 miles) east of Phoenix, was discovered in 1875, and was originally mined for silver. The property was acquired by W. B. Thompson who formed the Magma Copper Co. in 1910. Prior to 1965, square-set mining and cut-and-fill methods were used to mine steeply dipping veins at Magma. Ore was moved to the chute by gravity in the square-set stopes and by slusher in the cut-and-fill stopes. The stopes were gobbed with waste from the surface and development headings in the mine. The original square-set method of mining was modi¬fied in order to extract replacement ore bodies in limestones that dipped at 0.52 rad (30°) and varied in thick¬ness from 4.6 to 38 m (15 to 125 ft). Mining of these ore bodies was done by starting at the upper lateral ex¬tremities and retreating to the access openings. The timber square sets and cribbing were used as temporary support, the ground being allowed to cave as the mining retreated. It was found, however, that mining in such a manner was very inefficient; safety hazards increased be¬cause of the blocky and fractured characteristics of the ore and the weakness of the hanging wall. GENERAL DESCRIPTION The undercut-and-fill method of mining is now the primary stoping method used at Magma, and no pillars are left for later extraction. Four ore bodies are pres¬ently being mined. These ore bodies (see Fig. 1) dip conformably at 0.52 rad (30°) to the east with the host limestone and shale sediments, their average strike length is about 122 m (400 ft), and their thickness varies from 9 to 38 m (30 to 125 ft). The ore bodies are separated by varying thicknesses of barren rock. Three of them come together at various elevations primarily in the area of the main feeder fault, but there is an apparent horizontal displacement of about 23 m (75 ft) on the main feeder fault which complicates stope layout. The method as originally applied has been modified in order to mine more efficiently ore bodies that are 9 m (30 ft) or more in thickness. The modification was made to mine all the ore at a given elevation before dropping down for the cut below. The advantage of this is that mining is done on a horizontal plane and there¬fore muck removal can be mechanized. Also multiple faces are made available, thereby improving overall min¬ing efficiency. Another major change made was to carry a 6.7-m (22-ft) face when mining the top sill and a 6.4-m (21-ft) face when mining under fill rather than the former standard 3.35-m (11-ft) high face. This change lengthens the mining cycle and cuts mat prepa¬ration costs in half. Stopes are laid out (see Fig. 2) so that maximum mining panels are available and yet one stope crew will not tie up too much of the ore reserve. One stope might consist of as many as 20 panels, and these panels are divided evenly on opposite sides of the extraction cross¬cut. The stope layout is planned so that the maximum tramming distance to the orepass will not exceed 30.5 m (100 ft) on the crosscut and 38 m (125 ft) in the panel. Steady-state simulation has proved to be a very useful aid in designing new plants and optimizing existing ones. The algorithms and data definitions of existing simulators often, however, require a great deal of expertise for implementing a simulation-based methodology. The constraints imposed by conventional simulators are explained and the advantages of a new algorithm, the Objective-Driven Simulation, are shown. These advantages are a) an improvement in the simulation results, which enables simplifications of the methodologies used, and b) the possibility of taking into account economic objectives for plant operation, thus extending the range of application of steady-state simulation.

An entirely new level of magnetic filtration technology was put into full commercial production by the kaolin industry of Georgia, U.S.A. during 1973-1974. At present, four kaolin producers in Georgia are operating large magnetic filters each capable of processing over 1000 gallons of kaolin slurry per minute or over 65 tons of kaolin per hour on a dry basis. A fifth large filter will go on stream in August, 1975. Four of these units are 84" machines manufactured by the Pacific Electric Motor Company of Oakland, California. When operated at the maximum 1000 g, p. m. rate, these five large magnetic filters have a combined capacity approximating the entire waterwashed coating and filler kaolin produced in the U.S.

The Wellman-Lord SO2 Recovery Process is operating commercially at one location in this country and at two locations in Japan. Tail gases from a sulfuric acid plant, from an oil fired steam generator and from a sulfur recovery unit are the respective applications. 1) At the Olin Corporation's Paulsboro, New Jersey, stack gas from a spent acid regenerative sulfuric acid plant-45000 SCFM - is treated in the W-L unit to reduce sulfur dioxide concentrations from 4500 ppm to less than 500 ppm. 2) At the Japan Synthetic Rubber plant in Chiba Prefecture, stack gas from an oil-fired steam generating plant - 120,000 SUM - is reduced from 2100 ppm S02 to less than 200 ppm. 3) At the Toa Nenryo Kogyo refinery in Kanagawa Prefecture, tail gas from a sulfur recovery (Claus) unit - 41,000 SUM - with, an inlet SO2 concentration of up to 13000 ppm is reduced to less than 200 ppm. The three installations are operating successfully and are capable of reducing S02 emissions to levels significantly below the concentration guaranteed. With the one exception of a higher than guaranteed chemical make up requirement at Paulsboro, utility and chemical requirements will be less than design.

This paper is a case study using new laser-terrain-mapping technology by EagleScan, Inc., for creating topographic maps. Holnam, Inc., has used this technology to create maps and volumetric calculations of several mines in the United States. The information is superior to conventional methods through accuracy, manpower, time, and cost. Holnam, Inc., was the first cement manufacturer to use the Digital Airborne Topographic Imaging System (DATIS?). The technology uses the DATIS? to produce high-resolution terrain maps and volumetric assessments of any area. DATIS? is a mapping instrument that integrates (1) a Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) instrument to measure terrain elevation using laser light, (2) a large-format digital camera, (3) a relative position Global Positioning System (GPS) to measure aircraft position, and (4) an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) to measure aircraft attitude. The DATIS? can measure up to 220,000 elevation samples per mil. The system continually collects data on the aircraft's position and measures the time for each laser pulse transmission to return from the ground, giving each sample a GPS reference. The system can operate at night, in overcast sky, and during high-wind conditions and can measure terrain below vegetation cover, unlike standard aerial photography used for traditional surveying and mapping. Surveyed ground-control panels are no longer necessary with this new technology, and only one ground GPS base station located within 60 mi from the aircraft position is required. A computer elevation-point data file is created with the x, y, z coordinates of each laser elevation sample. With this file, CAD engineering programs can create topographic maps that rival products using conventional aerial mapping techniques. Volumetric measurements of stockpiles and pits are also available due to the high density of points collected from an area. This new technology radically changes the turnaround time for map users, giving a product in the format used by today's cartographers. The time line from flight to maps is measured in days instead of weeks.

The impact of the suspension of the LME daily tin price since October 24, 1985 to date, and the failure of the International Tin Council to support the Buffer Stock Manager are reported with comments.

This paper presents preliminary results of a Bureau of Mines study of potential costs of compliance with the federal Resource Conservation and Recovery Act for copper heap and dump leaching. Specifically, estimates are given for the cost of compliance with possible technology standards that would require the use of liners and closure caps regardless of terrain and underlying geology and hydrology. This cost is compared to the co lit of compliance with present state requirements for terrain a typical of those found at existing copper leach sites in the Southwestern U.S.A. Incremental compliance costs are found to widely exceed screening criteria used by the Environmental Protection Agency to denote significant economic impact.

Phosphate rock is a naturally occurring mineral which, in upgraded form, is important to both agriculture and industry. Phosphate rock normally must be upgraded before it can be assimilated and used. Most of this upgrading is now carried out by chemical means, largely through the reaction of a strong inorganic acid (primarily sulfuric acid) with the phosphate rock to remove major impurities and to produce soluble phosphate. A less important but yet still commercially significant conversion method involves the thermal reduction of phosphate rock at high temperature in an electric furnace to produce elemental phosphorus. The elemental phosphorus is then converted to usable end products. This conversion route is a more costly method than the chemical route, but it has the advantage of being able to produce chemically pure phosphorus derivatives. On the other hand, the use of phosphate rock for agricultural application-primarily for use as a plant nutrient ingredient for fertilizer -does not require the same level of purity. As a consequence, the chemical method of phosphate rock upgrading is the predominant technique for producing phosphatic fertilizers.

In just over a generation, the United States bentonite industry has grown from almost a rake and shovel operation into one with a multimillion ton annual production rate and exports to all corners of the globe. Bentonite production, pressed to keep pace with the soaring demand, has increased more than 10 fold in the last 30 years. The worldwide demand for bentonite is expected to double during the next eight to ten years. It remains to be seen whether U.S. producers will be able to maintain the dominant position in the world market. It should be noted that accurate statistical information regarding production or market information is difficult or impossible to obtain abroad and also within the United States. Published information obtained in response to questionnaires of the Bureau of Mines tends to be on the conservative side. FOUNDRY It has only been in the last thirty or forty years that bentonite has become an indispensible part of the age old metal casting industry. The relationship has proven most beneficial to both industries and promises to be long lasting. Perlite is rhyolitic glass with 2 to 5 percent by weight (wt.%) bound water held within the silicic-glass structure. It is often distinguished by vitreous, pearly luster and concentric perlitic fractures ("onionskin"). Occurrences worldwide are associated with Tertiary to middle Quaternary volcanic rocks. Perlite is in silicic domes, plugs, laccoliths, flows, vitric tephra, chill margins of dikes and sills, and welded ash-flow tuffs. It is a hydrated volcanic glass formed through secondary alteration of obsidian by the incorporation of water into the glass/silica structure. Post-emplacement hydration (weathering) of cooled glasses by meteoric water is the principal alteration process, but some hydration by magmatic or meteoric water during or shortly after emplacement, or hydration by water exsolved during cooling may occur. Commercial "perlite" is any volcanic glass that expands or "pops" when heated quickly to plasticity while evolving steam and thus forming a lightweight, frothy material. The expansion temperature typically ranges from 1,100 to 1,500°F. An expanded volume increase of 10 to 40 times the original volume yields expanded densities of 1.5 to 11 pounds per cubic foot (lbs/ft3). Perlite is mined by eight companies at 10 operations in six western states. New Mexico accounts for more than 80% of the total tonnage mined. The rest comes from Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, and Nevada. In 1992, domestic production was 571,000 short tons (st), domestic apparent consumption was 591,000 st, and the value of crude perlite was $15.3 million. In 1991, with about the same production and price of crude perlite, the gross value for expanded perlite was $101.7 million. Perlite exports in 1992, primarily to Canada, are estimated an 30,000 st; and imports, from Greece, are an estimated 50,000 st. In 1992, 70 plants in 33 states expanded crude perlite. Construction uses of expanded perlite accounted for 66% of total domestic sales. Expanded perlite used as filter aid accounted for 15%. All other markets, including use as a filler and in agriculture, accounted for 19%. Leading states for expanding perlite, ranked by order of sales, were Mississippi, Pennsylvania, California, Illinois, and Georgia. Domestic perlite encounters transportation disadvantages in some areas of the eastern United States compared to perlite imported from Greece. However, western U.S. perlite exports to Canada offset this in large part, and net import reliance for perlite is about 3% of domestic consumption. Perlite grab samples were tested at the New Mexico Bureau of Mines and Minerals Resources (NMBMMR) for their basic suitability in horticulture, construction, filter aids, and fillers/extenders using Perlite Institute techniques modified by the NMBMMR. Most commercial perlite ranged from 2.5 to 3.0 wt.% bound water for all major types (classical, granular, and pumiceous). Expanded density varied widely, but the lowest density of 1.9 lbs/ft3 was for granular. Average brightness of expanded perlite was 47.6 to 69.3%. Nonexpansibles, commonly obsidian or "dead" perlite, ranged from 18 wt.% to less than 1 wt.%, with granular perlte generally the lowest. Compacted density was not related to either perlite type or nonexpansibles present. Sieve analyses of the -50+100 mesh product showed that, in general, pumiceous perlite produces more fines and classical and granular perlite average 60 to 80% -30+100 mesh after expansion. Samples were tested for crystalline silica that ranged from below the detection limit of 0.5 wt.% to nearly 0.2 wt.%, but most tested below 0.5 wt.%. Although quartz content can be lowered in the expanded product by the expansion process, producers can further lower crystalline silica in the product by mixing low-quartz crude with high-quartz perlite before expansion. Chemical analysis by x-ray fluorescence confirms the rhyolitic composition of perlite, but indicates that surface weathering may increase the concentration of some elements, such as potassium and calcium, by infilling cracks or fissures developed during or after perlite emplacement.

Trialkylphosphine sulphides, in contrast to their well known oxide analogues (1,2,3,4), have received comparatively little attention as metal extractants and previous studies have been biased toward analytical rather than commercial solvent extraction applications (5,6,7). The sulphides are soft Lewis bases and only from complexes readily with the limited number of metals in the periodic table which can be classified as soft acids (8) e.g. Ag+, Hg2+ and Pd2+. Consequently, these compounds tend to be more selective than the broad-spectrum, hard-base, phosphine oxide extractants such-as TOPO (trioctylphosphine oxide). The purpose of this paper is to describe a potential application of one phosphine sulphide, CYANEX® 471X extractant, in the selective recovery of silver from base metal sulphate solutions. CYANEX 471X is triisobutylphosphine sulphide (TIBPS).

INTRODUCTION In Canada, radium-226 is removed from uranium mining and milling effluents by the addition of barium chloride to precipitate barium-radium sulphate. Large settling ponds are provided to effect solid-liquid separation. However, the barium-radium sulphate precipitate [(Ba,Ra)S04] is a fine, slow-settling crystalline solid which is not easily removed by simple sedimentation systems. Consequently, settling pond effluents may contain appreciable quantities of particulate or suspended radium-226, depending upon the specific pond system and/or the time of year considered. Also, current technology is expected to be incompatible with ultimate disposal goals since safe recovery of the barium-radium sulphate sludge from the settling ponds may be difficult to achieve (IAEA, 1976). Under the auspices of Environment Canada, a Government-Industry Mining Task Force established a Radioactivity Sub-Group in 1974 to assist in the development of effluent regulations and guidelines for the uranium mining industry. Among the recommendations of the Sub-Group was the need to seek more effective methods of radium removal, including development of physical--chemical treatment systems as an alternative to settling ponds. In response to the Sub-Group recommendations, a bench scale feasibility study began in March 1976 at the Wastewater Technology Centre (WTC) of Environment Canada. The bench scale work was expanded and accelerated in 1977 with financial assistance provided by the Atomic Energy Control Board. The results of this study indicated that coagulation and flocculation of the (Ba,Ra)S04 precipitate greatly increased settling rates (Wilkinson and Cohen, 1977). Subsequently, a research program with a larger scope was initiated in January 1978; this program is jointly managed and funded by government and industry as indicated in Table 1. The principal goal of the Joint Government-Industry Program is the development of a physical-chemical process to reduce the radium-226 content of uranium mining and milling effluents. The following effluent radium-226 activities were established as targets for the program: 0.37 Bq/L (10 pCi/L) as total radium-226; 0.11 Bq/L (3 pCi/L) as dissolved radium-226. Recent research has demonstrated the utility of the FTIRIIRS adsorption density equation for in-situ study of surfactant adsorption phenomena at the surfaces of reactive internal reflection elements (IREs). The FTIR/IRS adsorption density equation is given by (formula) where r is the adsorption density, A/N is the absorbance per reflection, e is the integrated molar absorptivity, 4 is the bulk concentration of the surfactant, d. is the effective thickness, and dP is the depth of penetration. Previously, the validity of the adsorption density equation had been confirmed only from solution depletion measurements with high surface area powders. Now, FTIR/IRS studies of Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) monolayer films of fatty acid transferred to the surface of a calcium fluorite IRE .clearly validate the reliability of the FTIR/IRS adsorption density equation for quantitative analysis of surfactant adsorption. In addition, it was confirmed from the observed absorption band at 1550 cm-1 that the first monolayer of the transferred fatty acid chemisorbs at the surface of fluorite.
