Preliminary figures from the US Mine Safety and Health Administration show 801 underground metal mines and 490 surface metal mines, at the end of 1981, up from 663 and 383, respectively, in 1980. Preliminary MASH figures also show 207 underground nonmetal mines and 1070 surface nonmetal mines at the end of 1981, compared with 167 and 1092, respectively, last year. In addition, preliminary MASH figures show there were 14,676 mineral extraction operations on the surface and 3845 underground at the end of 1981, versus 14,951 and 3675, respectively, for last year. The number of mines, then, in three of four categories increased significantly, while having a lower net total of just 2% in the other category. And the number of underground extraction operations increased nearly 5% for the year, while surface operations were down less than 2%. But despite operations totals that mostly held their own or showed significant increases, it was a tough year for the nation's mining industry. The nonferrous segment of the industry had a bad year and 1982 may be no better, according to Business Week (Jan. 11, 1982), which adds that a turnaround is impossible unless the general economy recovers. Even then, with diminishing markets and overcapacity plaguing its products, the mining industry's condition "will be far from robust," the magazine says. The basic problem is that nonferrous metals-aluminum, copper, lead, molybdenum, nickel, and zinc-are tied to the most troubled sectors of the US economy. As recently as 1979, for example, more than 40% of all aluminum shipments went to the construction and transportation industries. Last year, these markets were down to 35% of aluminum shipments. And molybdenum sales to steel producers dropped by nearly 15% last year. Moreover, nonferrous products ended 1981 at disastrously low prices. Molybdenum oxide sold at $8.77/kg ($3.98/lb), half its $17.63/kg ($8/lb) price earlier in 1981 and aluminum was listed at $1.08/kg ($0.49/lb), compared with $1.54/kg ($0.70/lb) a year earlier. The Comex price of copper was $1.54/ kg ($0.70/lb), down from $3.11/kg ($1.41/lb) in early 1980, in real terms the worst copper price in 30 years. Lower prices led operators to cut their output and increase layoffs, shut down mines, and defer capital spending projects. In December, Duval Corp., a Pennzoil Co. subsidiary, shut all four of its US copper mines until March. Aluminum Co. of America had laid off 7.3% of its work force, shut nine of its 38 smelting lines, and entered 1982 operating at only 68% of capacity. Inco Ltd., the Free World's largest nickel producer, lost money in 1981, an estimated $11 million, for the first time since 1932. And, like Falconbridge Nickel Mines and other major nickel producers, had cut back on nickel production and was operating at only 63% of capacity (Forbes, Feb. 15, 1982). Amax, the country's largest molybdenum producer, had cut production by 20%. And Hanna Mining Co. sold lead for $5.07/kg ($2.30/lb), about $1.54/kg ($0.70/lb) below what it cost to produce. Another problem is that copper companies in the next few years must come to terms with problems of aging smelters. Some companies are simply closing them. In 1980, Anaconda closed its 75-year-old Butte, MT, smelter and is shipping concentrates to Japan, rather than modifying the smelter to meet environmental requirements. And oth Phelps Dodge Corp. and Asarco Inc. have antiquated smelters on which they will have to make decisions. The most troubled metal in 1982, Business Week said, will be molybdenum, with no real recovery in sight until the mid-1980s. High molybdenum prices in the late 1970s, caused in part by shortages, triggered overexpansion that will take years for the US market to soak up. On a more upbeat note, 1981 mergers might help stabilize the industry by providing funds for mining companies. Standard Oil Co. (Ohio) said it plans to spend $7 billion on Kennecott during the next 10 years for modernization and expansion. And Atlantic Richfield Co. said it will spend $500 million on Anaconda Copper Co. during the next five years. Another positive note was sounded by T. H. Adams of the United Banks of Colorado Inc. He said he expects the mining industry to experience moderate growth in 1982, led by "interest rate sensitive" demand from energy, electronics, and defense markets. And mining will be helped by "weak, but improved" construction and auto markets. The mining industry will be operating in an economy stronger than 1981, but still relatively sluggish by postwar standards, Adams predicted. Iron Ore Estimated US iron ore production in 1981 was 75.2 Mt (74 million long tons), up 6% from 70.7 Mt (69.6 million long tons) in 1980, though down from the 87.1 Mt (85.7 million long tons) produced in 1979. The mine value of usable iron produced from domestic mines was estimated at $3 billion. US iron ore was produced by 28 companies operating 35 mines, 26 concentration plants, and 16 pelletizing plants. The mines included 34 open pits and one underground mine. It was estimated in Chemical Week1 that the uranium fuel requirements for the U.S. Electric Utility Industry by the mid 1980's would be about four times that-of what it is today. This corresponds to approximately 45,000 tons per year of 'yellow cake' - of which a good portion is represented by ammonium diuranate - vs. the 11,700 ton total estimated for 1975. Perhaps just as significant is the 40-fold increase in thirty years projected for the entire world since 1970. Thus by the year 2000. 'yellow cake' production could be in the order of [3]50.000 short tons annually.2 'Yellow cake', so named because of its inherently bright yellow color, is a finely divided precipitate that can be formed after the leaching step when refining uranium ores. Feed solids enhancement then occurs to at least 50% by weight using filters or centrifuges This is followed normally by drying and then calcining with the conversion of ammonium diuranate to triuranium octoxide represented by the following equation: [9 (NH4)2 U2 07 heat 14 NH3 7 + 15 H2O7 + 2N2/ + 6 U308 4] Theoretically, assuming 100% conversion every 100 kgs. or 100 lbs. of ammonium diuranate will result in 90 kgs. or 90 lbs. of triuranium octoxide.

Kerr-McGee has operated the Ambrosia Lake uranium mill since startup in 1958. Tonnage milled per day has varied from 3500-7000 tons. The mill capacity is currently rated at 7000 tons per day. The process consists of two parallel circuits following crushing and sampling, \\lhich include open circuit rod mill grinding, sulfuric acid leach, cyclone classification, and counter-current washing circuits of sand classifiers and slime thickeners. Pregnant solution is clarified and polished by precoat pressure leaf filters prior to amine solvent extraction. Yellowcake is precipitated from the pregnant strip solution with ammonia, filtered and dried.

The Upper Silesian Coal Basin is located in the area of the Upper Silesian Syncline and belongs to one of the most complex tectonic units in Europe. It occupies 5,650 km2. In 2020, there were 20 hard coal mines operating in the area. Seismological research in this area consists of observation of precursors/symptoms of shock generation and understanding of their effects. Studies (Teisseyre R. 1972, Mutke G. & Stec K. 1997, Stec K. 2007, Dubiński J. & other 2010, Idziak A. 2010) of complex impacts of rock mass provided a background for determining the conditions for the formation of exploitation and regional seismic shocks. Issues related to tectonic and exploitation stresses, successive extraction of coal seams at higher depths, operation in the vicinity of fault zones, often complex geological and organic conditions result in the activation of a discontinuity surface due to stress caused by deformation of rock layers, which, as a result, causes the emergence of strong shocks above 107 J. The article was based on analyses of extraction value, high-energy shocks, both of mining and tectonic-mining (so-called regional shocks) origin, against the background of changing operating conditions, which, as a result, creates an image of periodically changing seismic activity and location of strong shocks. Observation results show that, with an increase in exploitation depth and declining extraction, the number of strong shocks caused by tectonic stress (107 - 109 J) and exploitation stress (≥105 J) has been steadily increasing over the last 25 years.

Sutter Gold Venture excavated an exploration decline into a mineralized zone in the Sutter Creek gold mining district. Delays in obtaining the conditional-use permit resulted in 7 to 10 million gallons of water accumulation in the decline containing elevated dissolved arsenic. Sutter received a permit to land apply the water after reducing the arsenic concentration to 0.05 mg/L. Initially the water was treated by co- precipitation arsenic with ferric hydroxide. Operational difficulties of this treatment system resulted in Sutter pursuing alternative treatment methods. The activated alumina adsorpting was selected due to its flexibility and ease of operation. Operating and maintenance data and costs will be presented.

Cationic flotation of quartz is currently utilized in the concentration of iron ores and the cleaning of phosphate concentrates. The present work deals with depression of quartz in the presence of aluminum aqueous species during cationic flotation. It was established that aluminum species depress the flotation of quartz with an amine, especially under neutral and slightly alkaline conditions. With an amine as the collector, studies of the adsorption (abstraction) of Al species on quartz surfaces, as a function of pH, correlated well with the depression of this mineral. The presence of Al species also enhanced the depressant action of corn starch on quartz. In addition, the sodium salt of ethylenediaminotetraacetic (EDTA) was found to be an effective complexing agent to suppress the depression caused by aluminum ions.

The number of uranium in situ leach operations has increased significantly since 1975. As of May, 1980, there were a total of 27 active projects, including 16 commercial scale operations (or under construction) and 11 pilot scale operations. The south Texas uranium district and Wyoming have been the most prominent areas in early field experiments as well as in commercial application of this new recovery technique, although in situ leach tests are now being conducted in Colorado and New Mexico. The growing number of commercial-scale operations is accepted as prima facie evidence that in situ mining now offers a third option along with open pit and underground mining for winning uranium from sandstone host rocks. It is estimated that in 1979 about 9 percent of the nation's total uranium production was from in situ mining. However in situ mining of uranium is not without its environmental controls. The primary emphasis of environmental controls falls into two catagories; namely, control of the leach solutions during mining and demonstration of ground water restoration. Finally this paper briefly reviews the Bureau of Mines research program in uranium in situ mining.

During the last 30 years, a dramatic increase in the supply of byproduct sulfur substantially reduced the share of the market held by Frasch-mined (non-by-product) sulfur in North America. Even though Canadian sulfur production is not discretionary, the geographic remoteness from the large US markets and the high transportation costs associated with delivering sulfur to those markets has meant that Canadian producers act like discretionary producers in many important ways. They have effectively replaced the US Frasch producers as the cost-marginal sulfur source to large US markets. Implications of this change in market structure include more volatile sulfur prices and longer sulfur price recessions.

The aim of this book is to explore some of the nontechnical issues, which most engineers don't learn about in school, that can have a major impact in the mining industry. This chapter gives a brief overview of this volume and introduces the topics that will be addressed.

Since plant start-up in January 1983, Golden Sunlight Mines, Inc. has implemented several process changes and improvements. Among these are a pulp preaeration circuit and a sand tailings retreatment circuit. The purpose of the preaeration circuit is to reduce reagent consumption during gold dissolution. The sand tailings retreatment circuit was added to recover and process separately pyrite concentrate to maintain acceptable overall gold recoveries with the more refractory sulfide ores. Research and plant operating data along with process and improvement descriptions are presented.

The required reclamation of land disturbed by surface coal mining often results in the creation of some over steepened slopes which are prone to rapid erosion and sediment production. This natural activity on such slopes is not desirable nor allowed under current regulations. Experience has indicated that novel approaches must be devised to address the problem. Research conducted on field sites in Missouri has indicated that construction, during the reclamation and grading processes, of a man-made drainage system will control the erosion. The drainage system must replicate or exceed the natural system in terms of drainage density and channel frequency. Basic design considerations will be summarized in this paper and field results shown.

A three-stage fluidizing-bed process consisting of chlorination, selective oxidation and sulfur chloride conversion was tested for processing chalcopyrite concentrate. It was found that the use of excess oxygen was essential for the stable operation of the oxidation reactor. The excess-oxygen gas inevitably causes the oxidation of the sulfide concentrate in the chlorination and sulfur chloride conversion reactors. A new flowsheet is proposed to separate the chlorination and selective oxidation steps with separate flow paths of the fluidizing gases, thereby, preventing the passage of excess-oxygen gas in the chlorination and sulfur chloride conversion reactors. The feasibility of the proposed flowsheet was demonstrated in a laboratoryscale fiuidizing bed setup.

The beneficiation characteristics of low grade Birmingham red iron ores of the Big Seam and Ferruginous Sandstone seams were investigated using flotation and magnetic separation after reduction roasting. Samples of Bib Seam Ore responded more readily to concentration than the Ferruginous Sandstone ores. The impurities inherent with the iron oxide minerals limit the grade of concentrates recoverable from these ores to a maximum of about 61% Fe if reasonable iron recoveries are sought. Flotation concentrates assaying 60-61% Fe and about 0.1% P with attendant iron recoveries of about 63% were achieved from Big Seam ore charges while those obtained from the low phosphorus Ferruginous Sandstone samples analyzed 54-56% Fe. Reductive roasting and magnetic separation of ground charges of the two ore samples yielded concentrates assaying 60-61% Fe. Iron recoveries were better than those achieved by flotation, but the magnetic products of Big Seam ore were high in phosphorus (0.2-0.3% P).

Uranium ores leached with sulphuric acid typically have poor dewatering properties. Applicability of controlled neutralization where gypsum precipitates as crystalline particles, improving dewatering properties of material was examined. Neutralized material was then dewatered using paste thickener to increase underflow density. The objectives are to maximize water recovery due to water scarcity and to produce suitable cemented paste fill material for optimizing underground ore recovery. Work was performed on acidic slurry samples collected after leaching but before the resin-in-pulp uranium recovery. Controlled neutralization greatly reduced volume of neutralization precipitates giving higher densities and improving the dewatering (filtration) properties. As a result it would be possible to increase the water recycled to the mill. Another benefit is that sulphate in the recycled water was reduced to saturation limit minimizing scaling of process equipment. Additional test work is needed; however, Unconfined Compressive Strength results imply that controlled neutralization increases the strength of paste fill and possibly offers opportunities towards a viable backfill option.

Using K-oleate as a collector and alizarin red S (ARS) as a modifying agent, selective depression of dolomite from francolite was achieved in alkaline medium (pH> 9.0). Interestingly. ARS was also found to depress igneous apatite in alkaline medium in oleate flotation of apatite and calcite. Adsorption of ARS alone on dolomite was found to be higher than that on francolite. Complimentary adsorption experiments of ARS and K-oleate showed that oleate adsorption was increased in the presence of ARS on francolite but not on dolomite. K-oleate adsorbs on both francolite and dolomite and causes precipitation of calcium and magnesium oleate. Such precipitates can be pre-vented when ARS is present. The results are explained in terms of competitive adsorption for the active sites on francolite and dolomite by oleate and ARS, and their interactions with dis-solved mineral species in solution.

"Canopy air curtain (CAC) technology has been developed by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) for use on continuous miners and subsequently roof bolting machines in underground coal mines to protect operators of these machines from overexposure to respirator coal mine dust. The next logical progression is to develop a CAC for shuttle cars to protect operators from the same overexposures. NIOSH awarded a contract to Marshall University and J.H. Fletcher to develop the shuttle car CAC. NIOSH conducted laboratory testing to determine the dust control efficiency of the shuttle car CAC. Testing was conducted on two different cab configurations: a center drive similar to that on a Joy 10SC32AA cab model and an end drive similar to that on a Joy 10SC32AB cab model. Three different ventilation velocities were tested—0.61, 2.0, 4.3 m/s (120, 400, and 850 fpm). The lowest, 0.61 m/s (120 fpm), represented the ventilation velocity encountered during loading by the continuous miner, while the 4.3 m/s (850 fpm) velocity represented ventilation velocity airflow over the shuttle car while tramming against ventilation airflow. Test results showed an average of the dust control efficiencies ranging from 74–83% for 0.61 m/s (120 fpm), 39–43% for 2.0 m/s (400 fpm), and 6–16% for 4.3 m/s (850 fpm). Minor modifications to the shuttle car CAC design and placement improved the dust control efficiency to 51–55% for 4.3 m/s (850 fpm) with minimal impact on dust control efficiencies for lower ventilation velocities. These laboratory tests demonstrate that the newly developed shuttle car CAC has the potential to successfully protect shuttle car operators from coal mine respirable dust overexposures. INTRODUCTION The development of the canopy air curtain (CAC) dates back to the 1970s starting with the initial development of the CAC by the Donaldson Company, Inc. under contract from the U.S. Bureau of Mines [Krisko 1975]. This CAC was originally developed for continuous miner operators when continuous mining machines had cabs. The need for a CAC on the continuous miner was eliminated when the cab was removed from the machine design. However, CAC development progressed to include CAC designs for a roof bolting machine to protect roof bolters from respirable coal mine dust [Goodman and Organiscak 2002, Listak and Beck 2012, Reed et al. 2017]. This roof bolting machine CAC research continues to the present day."

In this paper, response surface methodology was applied to optimize the experimental conditions for the wet grinding of synthetic rutile. The effects of parameters such as rotation speed, solids concentration and duration of grinding on grinding efficiency were systematically investigated and the process conditions were optimized, using a nonlinear regression model based on central composite design. The statistical analysis of the results showed that in the range studied, the grinding efficiency of synthetic rutile was significantly affected by the rotation speed of the conical ball mill. According to results from analysis of variance, the value of the determination coefficient (R2=0.9989) indicates that the predicted values are found to be in good agreement with experimental values. The optimized experimental conditions were as follows: a rotation speed of 350 rpm, a solids concentration of 27.31% and a grinding time of 50.31 min, respectively. Under optimum conditions, the predicted grinding efficiency of 94.79% is obtained. The experimental values from the validation experiments were well within the predicted value of the model.

The Mine safety and Health Administration (MSHA) formed the Mine Ventilation Bleeder and Gob Training Committee in 1993. This committee was charged with developing a training course designed to enhance the knowledge and understanding of practical bleeder ventilation systems. The course will probably include a discussion on the theory behind bleeder system design, an in-depth look at the strengths and weaknesses of the basic bleeder system types, case studies, and a review of the systems currently in use. A database on active underground bituminous coal mines, gob areas, and the bleeder systems presently used was developed from questionnaires distributed to nine Coal Mine Safety and Health (CMS&H) districts. Representative systems were selected for thorough investigation to develop case studies. This paper introduces some of the material to be included in the course, including a description of basic bleeder system designs, a review of a portion of the database, and facts about the gob areas and bleeder systems investigated for the development of case studies.

A comparison of gold, platinum and sulfide ion selective electrodes was made in this investigation for determination of Eh in solutions containing sulfide ions as a model system. The comparison was made in terms of the accuracy of the measured response, response time, pH dependence, and reproducibility of measurement. In addition, the sensitivity of each electrode towards changes in sulfide ion concentration was measured in terms of the change in measured Eh per decade change in concentration of sulfide ions. On the basis of a detailed investigation of the electrode processes occurring at the surface of gold and platinum electrodes, it was postulated that within the pH range investigated these electrodes respond to changes in the hydrosulfide ion, HS-, concentration in solution. In comparison, the sulfide ion selective electrode is known to respond to changes in the sulfide ion, S-, activity in solution. Although the potentials measured with gold and platinum electrodes were mixed potentials, pretreatment procedures can be used to obtain a signal suitable for process control. For control of sulfide ions in flotation pulps, the use of a gold electrode pretreated at 1.0 V with respect to a standard hydrogen electrode is recommended.

This paper presents the design and installation of an underground ventilation remote monitoring and control system at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant. This facility is designed to demonstrate safe underground disposal of U.S. defense generated transuranic nuclear waste. To improve the operability of the ventilation system, an underground remote monitoring and control system was designed and installed. The system consists of 15 air velocity sensors and 8 differential pressure sensors strategically located throughout the underground facility providing real-time data regarding the status of the ventilation system. In addition, a control system was installed on the main underground air regulators. The regulator control system gives indication of the regulator position and can be controlled either locally or remotely. The sensor output is displayed locally and at a central surface location through the site-wide Central Monitoring System (CMS). The CMS operator can review all sensor data and can remotely operate the main underground regulators. Furthermore, the Virtual Address Extension (VAX) network allows the ventilation engineer to retrieve real-time ventilation data on his personal computer located in his workstation. This paper describes the types of sensors selected, the installation of the instrumentation, and the initial operation of the remote monitoring system.
