The acidophilic and chemolithotrophic Thiobacillus ferrooxidans bacteria grown in the presence of soluble ferrous ions and solid substrates (sulfur, pyrite and chalcopyrite) as their energy source have been used in the investigations. The cell surfaces are characterised by zeta-potential, contact angle, FT-IR and FT-Raman studies. The adsorption isotherms of the cells on pyrite and chalcopyrite indicate that the adsorption begins on pyrite at a much lower equilibrium cell population than on chalcopyrite. The isotherms tend to level off at a cell adsorption density corresponding to a horizontal monolayer coverage when the geometrical dimensions of the cells are considered. In the presence of cells, the xanthate flotation of pyrite completely depressed, whereas chalcopyrite flotation is unaffected. The results suggest that chalcopyrite can be selectively floated from pyrite, also at a neutral pH region, in the presence of T. ferrooxidans cells.

"Application of mechanical excavators for rock excavation in both civil construction and mining engineering fields has increased significantly in recent years. Prediction of the excavation performance of any mechanical excavators – tunnel boring machines, roadheaders, impact hammers, continuous miners and shearers for any geological formation is one of the main concerns in determining the economics of a mechanized mining and/or tunneling operation. A new portable linear rock cutting (PLCM) device was developed in the Mining Engineering Department of Istanbul Technical University and supported by The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK-112M859). The PLCM is used for cutting small core or block rock samples by a real-life mini disc cutter. The results from the PLCM are compared with the results obtained from the full scale rock cutting tests and theoretical model. It is found that there is reliable correlation between test results obtained from both cutting tests and theoretical model. 1. INTRODUCTION Mechanical excavators are currently the only alternatives to drill and blast due to higher production rate, increased safety, uniform muck size, less roof support, easier ventilation, continuous rather than cyclical operation, and possibilities for automatic control. The most of large civil tunneling and some mining projects are now carried out by mechanical excavators rather than drill and blast methods. Mechanical excavators can be categorized into two main groups: full-face and partial-face machines. Full-face machines such as tunnel boring machines excavate the face in one mode at the size of the cutterhead. Due to their cutting mode, the shape of the face profile by the full-face machines can only be circular. As for partial-face machines, the cutterhead is attached at the end of a boom. The face profile excavated by the partial-face machines can be from circular to horseshoe shape due to the cutting mode of the boom."

The authors' company has recently undertaken a development programme aimed at exploring the relationships between the variables of greatest importance in the design of mixer-settlers for metallurgical solvent extraction applications. Such applications vary from relatively small scale plants treating copper mine waters, nickel containing effluents, etc., where the total flowrates may be of the order of a few hundreds of gallons per minute, to very large scale plants treating several thousands of gallons per minute of leach liquors containing copper, uranium or other metals. This paper outlines the physical and mechanical factors which must be taken into account when designing mixer-settler systems for large scam. solvent extraction plants. The performance of the equipment will also be dependent upon the chemistry of the system, including the kinetics and thermodynamics of the ion exchange reaction itself, the effect of impurities flocculants, surfactants, temperature, etc., but these will not be dealt with here. Much of the laboratory work has been carried out using copper containing solutions and either LIX 64* or LIX 64N* as the solvent dissolved in various grades of kerosene. For simplicity, all the graphs and tables of results which are presented and discussed here will refer to the LIX-copper system, although the conclusions will in many cases be generally applicable to other systems also. The LIX-copper process is now sufficiently well known to obviate the need for a full description, however, an outline flowsheet of the process is shown in Figure 1. The ultimate objective of a laboratory programme for a particular extraction application is to provide data upon which a mixer-settler system can be designed to handle a given throughput of leach liquor and extract from this liquor the maximum quantity of metal for the minimum cost. The Vesta Mines of the Jones & Laughlin Steel Corporation operate in the Pittsburgh Seam in Washington County, Pennsylvania. This seam is overlain with a drawslate, 12" to 16" in thickness, which slimes readily when wet. Because of the need for a uniformly good quality metallurgical coal, the amount of reject, together with the top and particle sizes of the raw coal feed, is a serious problem at the Vesta Preparation Plant. The Preparation Plant operates two, seven and one-quarter hour shifts per day and processes 2,100 tons per hour of raw coal feed. The third shift is, used for planned maintenance of equipment. Since the water clarification equipment is so vital in insuring a uniform product, there is no alternative but that it be in operation at all times. To insure this continuous operation,. well-planned maintenance is a necessity. For years, Plant Management has kept performance records of the various units to determine the renewal dates of vital component parts, the length of wear, the various materials used in the manufacture of the equipment, and the labor cost for renewal. These records have been of inestimable help in planning an effective maintenance program to insure continuous operation of the various units.

Studies of sedimentary humic acids by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), stable isotopes, and elemental analysis show they are derived by oxidative degradation of complex plant macromolecules that are insoluble in aqueous or organic solvents. The mechanism by which humic acids originate is fundamental to our understanding of the role of organic matter in ore deposition, because these substances can complex and mobilize a number of metal ions. The organic matter associated with uranium ores of the San Juan Basin, New Mexico and Carlin-type disseminated gold deposits of Nevada has certain organic geochemical characteristics that suggest an origin from humic acids.

Chemical mining is the in situ extraction of metals from ores located within the confines of a mine (broken or fractured ore, stope fill, caved material, ores in permeable zones) or in dumps, prepared ore heaps, slag heaps, and tailing ponds on the surface. These materials represent an enormous, untapped, potential source of all types of metals. The field of chemical mining, now in its infancy, encompasses the preparation of ore for subsequent in-place leaching, the flow of solutions and ionic species through rock masses and within rock pores, the leaching of minerals with inexpensive and regenerable lixiviants under prevailing conditions of the in-place environment, the generation and regeneration of such solutions, and the recovery of metals or metal compounds from the metal-bearing liquors. It is not inconceivable that eventually our ore reserves will consist largely of low-grade, refractory, and inaccessible new deposits and low-grade zones near previously worked deposits, caved and gob-filled stopes, waste dumps, tailing ponds, and slag-heaps. Chemical mining promises economic recovery from these types of deposits. Before it can come of age, however, a much better understanding is needed concerning its chemical and physical aspects.

Lead ions originating from galena during processing of complex sulphide ores migrate to "cover" the surface of sphalerite and iron sulphide mineral particles, and cause poor selectivity in differential flotation. Generally in sulphide ore processing, the lead-activated minerals float in the Cu/Pb rougher circuit. Subsequently, surface lead complicates the zinc flotation circuit by lowering the concentrate grade due to the co-flotation of lead-activated iron sulphide minerals. The effect of lead in the differential flotation of sphalerite from Cu-Pb-Zn and Pb-Zn ores is discussed. Plant and laboratory test data are interpreted by determining the surface composition of individual grains of sphalerite and iron sulphide particles using two surface analytical techniques, Laser Ionization Mass Spectrometer (LIMS) and Time of Flight-Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometer (TOF-SIMS). Cationic and anionic species on the surface were analyzed to elucidate the phenomena.

Exploration requires processing highly varying kinds and amounts of geologic information. Successful discovery dictates that this be done quickly with maximum confidence. Most phases of exploration are more or less applicable to computer reduction on a routine basis. The use of digital computers to reduce raw data into interpretable form, lets the exploration geophysicist concentrate on interpretation and presentation, and to consistently apply more sophisticated and comprehensive analytical techniques, not practical before. In applying these concepts for the past several years, various efficient programs have evolved which provide more complete evaluation of all data including the pro- vision for more unique solutions. This has resulted in greater refinement and ability to select the most advantageous drill sites in a minimum time at a minimum cost or, in rejecting as soon as possible a project on which additional effort is no longer justified. Practical examples of computer applications in magnetics (air and ground), induced polarization and resistivity are discussed.

A coal's size distribution, clay content and moisture content can affect its handling behavior, but the combined effects of these properties and the effects of other properties are not known. Research underway at CQ Inc.' s (formerly EPRI' S) Coal Quality Development Center (CQOC) and at Iowa State University (ISU) will answer these questions as part of a four-year project to develop a coal handleability index for utilities to use when specifying coals. This paper will present preliminary data from the first year of the project, which focused on obtaining data on the chemical and physical properties of various coals and their measured handling properties. Additionally, size, ash and moisture analyses and shear test data for several coals used at one power plant will be presented along with correlations between these physical and chemical properties and the measured handling properties. These data lead to the conclusion that, while moisture content-is the most important variable, the amount of -325M (-0.044 mm) coal fines is a significant factor in determining coal handling behavior.

Cathodic protection using impressed current was employed to reduce mill wall wear during ball milling. Wear rates were determined from weight-loss measurements made on four 1-in.-diam mild steel coupons that were installed flush with the interior surface of the mill wall. Grinding tests were conducted on quartz, pyrite and quartz-pyrite mixtures at pH levels of 4.6, 7.1 and 9.2. Cathodic protection was shown to reduce mill wear by 30% to 60%. An examination of the coupon surfaces using scanning electron microscopy showed that cathodic protection greatly reduced pitting corrosion. The presence of a sulfide mineral, such as pyrite, was found to increase the wear rate significantly, possibly due to galvanic interactions. It was also found that the wear rate is significantly higher than the sum of abrasive wear and the corrosive wear, due to a synergistic effect.

Bulkspray cooling has been economically applied in cooling the hot environment of South African gold mines for the past two decades. Its success in that country led to its introduction at Gulf Mineral Resources Co.'s Mt. Taylor Mine in 1981 when increased drifting imposed additional cooling requirements. The bulkspray cooler developed and used at Mt. Taylor has a heat transfer capability of about 500 to 1500 kW. It is compact and portable, designed to be moved as required to maintain working temperatures in the advancing drift faces.

To address the drawbacks of the conventional portland cement/fly ash (PC/FA)–based cementitious material currently used in practice to construct pumpable roof supports (PRSs), a novel cementitious material has been developed based on geopolymerization technology. The novel cementitious material is comprised of two pumpable grout streams: Stream 1 is a slurry composed of pozzolanic material and high-calcium additive and stream 2 is an alkaline solution comprised of a gelling agent. Biopolymer has been added to the second stream to provide ductility to the geopolymer cementitious material. In the laboratory scale, systematic experiments have been carried out to investigate the viscosity, setting time, and uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) of the new cementitious material and develop the right recipe for field applications. By collaborating with industry and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), full-scale PRSs have been constructed and tested. The results show that (1) the novel cementitious material based PRSs has much higher peak UCS and similar or higher residual strength than the conventional PC/FA-based PRSs; and (2) unlike the PC/FAbased cementitious material, the novel cementitious material shows good long-term durability with nocracking/disintegration when exposed to air.

"The Industrial Comminution Efficiency (ICE) working group, part of the Global Mining Standards and Guidelines Group (GMSG) has engaged a large number of industry professionals representing mining companies, equipment vendors, consultants and metallurgical laboratories with interests and capabilities in the comminution field. These participants have collaborated to develop three guidelines for the assessment of the efficiency of mineral comminution circuits. Two of these guidelines deal specifically with power based modelling techniques to quantify energy efficiency using widely practiced techniques, those developed by Bond (1961), Rowland and McIvor (2009), and Morrell (2009). The third guideline deals with the sampling and surveying of grinding circuits as is required to provide the necessary information, at appropriate quality, to furnish the efficiency analysis promoted by the first two guidelines. This preprint will focus on the Guideline on Methods to Survey and Sample Grinding Circuits, which is currently in the final stages of peer review and finalization by the GMSG. INTRODUCTION It is important to make a clear distinction on the scope of work of the GMSG guideline for sampling grinding circuits. Many mineral processing practitioners are familiar with the sampling and surveying of comminution circuits, in particular grinding circuits, for performance diagnosis and the identification of optimization potential. These surveys often provide information for population balance modelling of individual comminution and classification unit processes, and as a result require a large amount of information to calibrate and validate the unit models. As a result these surveys are labour intensive, somewhat expensive depending on internal capabilities of the mine site or company, and have a long time span from initial planning to final reporting. They also require a high level of expertise to process the survey data, simulate the circuit and make sensible recommendations on follow up actions. As a result of these factors full grinding circuit surveys are not a common occurrence at a large number of facilities, and several years may pass before follow up surveys are conducted. In the ensuing gap between surveys, the efficiency of the grinding circuit must often be taken on faith, and this is considered an unacceptable lapse in an environment of strained natural resources and low commodity prices. To support the rapid and productive energy efficiency analysis being promoted by the ICE working group, a much simplified survey and analysis process is required. The process reflected in the GMSG guideline is indeed more conducive to frequent analysis, at a skill level that is well within the capabilities of the average plant metallurgist. As a result it becomes feasible to conduct mini-surveys of plant performance, which can be used to quickly and precisely diagnose the high level impact of process changes. It can also be manipulated by experienced practitioner to provide sufficient information for modelling of the circuit to estimate the impact of process changes, supporting an initial rate and rank exercise to focus plant optimization efforts."

Santa Fe Pacific Gold Corporation (SFPGC) conducted pressure oxidation pilot plant studies at Hazen Research, Inc. on the Twin Creeks refractory carbonaceous gold ores during 1993 and 1994. Previous laboratory investigations demonstrated very good gold recoveries of 90 to 95%, using CIL cyanidation after batch pressure oxidation. However, results from the pilot plant showed that several ore types responded very poorly, with gold extractions of only 45 to 75%. Since these poor recoveries were unexpected, pilot plant testing was suspended for approximately four months while extensive research activities were conducted to determine the cause(s) and identify potential solutions. This paper describes the batch and pilot plant test results, the research activities that eventually identified the cause of the gold recovery problem, and the final semicontinuous and continuous pilot plant operations that confirmed possible solutions.

There has been a long history of ironmaking on the North East coast of England centered around the River Tees. The industry developed here because of the availability of good coking coals to the North in Co. Durham, and the discovery in 1851 of ironstone in the nearby Cleveland Hills, South of the .River. Cleveland ironstone is relatively poor in quality, with an iron content not exceeding h% and high proportion of sulphur and phosphorous. The iron exists in chemical association with alumina and silica, and physical beneficiation processes involve a serious loss in iron unless the upgrading is limited, when the economics of the process become doubtful. Over the years, richer foreign ores have replaced the local ironstone, and the last operating mine was closed in 1964.

Dust-related respiratory disease remains the major health concern in mining, and health agencies are proposing more stringent standards. The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) is investigating techniques to continuously monitor respirable dust in real-time during the coal or ore extraction process. Continuous monitoring will allow mine operators to evaluate hazardous dust concentrations and adjust the operations to produce less dust. Mine instrumentation applications include machine-mounted and hand-held monitors, personal monitors, and area/environmental monitors. Six dust detection methods have been considered to meet application requirements. These are: light-scattering instruments, a smoke-particle detection technique, correlation of pressure drop across the collection filter with amount of dust deposited, the Tapered-Element Oscillating Microbalance (TEOM) instrument, a method that relates the amount of dust collected on a filter with the vibration of the filter, and beta attenuation measurement of dust. Studies to date have identified the TEOM instrument and the technique of correlating the amount of dust collected with the vibration ofthe filter as having the most promise for success. Development of the machine-mounted monitor is the highest research priority. The application options and progress to date in developing continuous monitoring instrumentation are presented.

INTRODUCTION Tunneling machines were introduced into civil con¬struction in the 1800s, but their practical applications were not realized fully until the 1950s. As of 1977, tunneling machines were being used on most tunneling projects of substantial size. As in civil construction, the mining applications of tunneling machines have included long drives such as tunneling for long ore-body develop¬ment drifts, long haulage tunnels, longwall access drifts, and long crosscut developments. Tunneling machines ranging from 1.75-m (5.7-ft) to more than I1.0-m (36-ft) diam are available from several manufacturers; machines for mining applications generally have ranged between 1.75 and 6.0-m (5.7¬and 20.0-ft) diam. Tunneling machines usually operate at or near horizontal grades and are supported by a rail-haulage backup system. However, declines and inclines have been made using alternative backup equip¬ment. Either circular or shaped tunnels may be bored, depending upon the particular equipment used. Using tunneling machines to bore openings through rock offers several advantages over the use of the drilling and blasting technique. These advantages include a rapid advance, continuous operation, uniformity of the opening size, smooth walls, and safe working conditions. Compared to drilling and blasting, boring reduces the disturbance of adjacent rock, thereby reducing the ground-support requirements and the exposure to water inflows. The smooth walls provide natural arching and present minimum resistance to the flow of air. A tunneling machine should be considered a spe¬cialized mining tool that is well-suited to certain mining applications. Properly applied and sustained, a tunnel¬ing machine contributes to realizing substantial econo¬mies in the development of underground mines. All costs herein are expressed in 1977 US dollars, unless otherwise noted. The mention of trade names and manufacturers is not intended to imply an endorse¬ment of any specific equipment. TYPES OF TUNNELING MACHINES As listed in Table 1, five principal types of tunneling machines were being manufactured in 1977. Each type of machine offers a special solution to a specific mining problem. Although each of these types of machines is described herein, most of this chapter is devoted to the full-face rotary rock-tunneling machine that has demon¬strated the greatest production in both civil construction and mining applications. Full-Face Rotary Rock-Tunneling Machines As shown in Fig. 1, a full-face rotary rock-tunneling machine consists of a rotating head that is fitted with rock-cutting tools and is forced into the tunnel face. This head is supported by a bearing on a structural support member that, in turn, is held in place by a hydraulically positioned wall-gripping mechanism. Both torque and thrust are reacted from the cutterhead, through the structural support and gripper mechanism, and to the tunnel wall. The rock cuttings fall to the invert at the tunnel face, and they are removed by means of cutterhead buckets or scoops that transfer the cuttings to a conveyor belt. After advancing the cutter¬head through a preset boring stroke, the tunneling machine is advanced by hydraulically pulling the gripper mechanism in from the tunnel walls, stroking forward, and resetting the gripper to the new forward position on the wall; the machine then is set for the next advance stroke. Full-face machines cut only circular openings. Ma¬chines with diameters as small as 1.8 m (6 ft) and as large as 6.1 m (20 ft) have been used in mining applica¬tions, excavating rock with unconfined compressive strengths in excess of 276 000 kPa (40,000 psi). Although special machines have been designed to turn on a radius of 30 m (100 ft) in both horizontal and vertical directions, the conveyors and backup sup¬port equipment generally limit tunneling machines to turns with a radius of more than 60 m (200 ft). The full-face rotary rock-tunneling machines have provided the fastest and most reliable production of any mining method or machine. These machines can be equipped to place any of a variety of ground-support systems, and they can be provided as "open" machines, as shown in Fig. 1, or as "shielded" machines, as shown in Fig. 2. The open machines have the advantage of allowing the ground to be supported as near to the tunnel face as possible. The shielded machines have been designed principally to allow placing precast con¬crete segments. The shielded machines completely pro¬tect the equipment and personnel at the heading, but they are economically limited to permanent long-life haulageways where full lining is required. Partial-Face Rotary Rock-Tunneling Machines As shown in Fig. 3, the partial-face rotary tunneling machine is equipped with a cutterhead that rotates slowly at about 0.21 rad/s (2.0 rpm). The single-disk cutterhead produces the tunnel section shown in Fig. 4 by means of an oscillating motion. These machines work on the undercutting principle, and they are avail¬able in spring-line dimensional increments of 0.1 m (0.32 ft) from 1.5 to 2.1 m (5.0 to 7.0 ft); the vertical dimensions are 2.4 to 3.2 m (8.0 to 10.5 ft), respec¬tively. Depending upon the tunnel width, the cutterhead disk may be fitted with from 8 to 16 drag-bit cutters. Penetration is achieved by means of hydraulic rams that force the tungsten-carbide bits into the rock mass. The operation is cyclic, with cutting occurring only on the upstroke. On the downstroke, the rotating cutter¬head draws the fallen muck from the invert into the panzer-type conveyor for rearward transfer. This feature allows time to either reposition ore cars or to exit the tunnel with muck trains while the machine is cutting, as shown in Fig. 5. The Bureau of Mines is conducting a research project in cooperation with the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Mining companies, and equipment manufacturers are also participating through the Colorado Mining Association (CMA). The objectives of this cooperative research project are to determine the practicality of coupling a dry exhaust conditioning system (dry system) and diesel particulate filter (DPF) to make an integrated control system, and to determine the effectiveness and durability of the integrated system in an underground coal mine. Diesel-powered mining machines must be equipped with control devices to reduce surface and exhaust temperatures to safe levels and prevent flames and sparks from being emitted to the mine atmosphere. Diesel exhaust-gas water scrubbers have been successfully used for many years but they have several disadvantages; they are large, consume large quantities of water, and require frequent maintenance to remain functional. Additionally, diesel exhaust is a source of noxious gases and particulate matter. Particulate emissions are composed primarily of small carbon particles with absorbed hydrocarbons and they are almost entirely respirable in size. Even an engine in good mechanical condition can emit up to 400 mg/cu m of respirable particulate matter. A dry system for control of diesel fire and explosion hazards, coupled to a DPF, promises to be a complete control system for diesel engines. The dry system cools the exhaust and suppresses sparks and flame with a heat exchanger and flame and spark traps. The conditioner is smaller, consumes no water, and requires less maintenance than a comparable water scrubber. The DPF uses a ceramic substrate as a wall-flow filter and is very efficient at collecting exhaust particles. Average particulate mass collection efficiency is 90%. This report describes a cooperative research project to combine the dry system with the DPF, conduct performance tests on the integrated system at Bureau and MSHA 1aboratory facilities, and conduct field tests of the system on a production machine in an underground coal mine.
