Meridian Gold Company's Royal Mt. King mine (RMK), a subsidiary of FMC Gold Company, is located approximately 40 miles east of Stockton, California on the western edge of the historic mother lode belt. Gold ore at RMK is associated with a series of northwest trending fault zones hosted in either meta-volcanic or meta-sedimentary rock types commonly referred to as greenstone sulfide and carbonaceous phyllite. Mineralogy studies show gold in both ore types to occur primarily as electrum in the form of 1 -20 um inclusions in pyrite with varying amounts of free milling gold. In carbonaceous ores, gold was not found to be closely associated with carbon. At the start of the current mining operation, three major ore resources were identified. North Pit and Gold Knoll pits were the major greenstone reserves while Skyrocket Pit contained over 60% of the total reserves as carbonaceous ore. Since North Pit and Gold Knoll were to be the first areas mined, the mill began operation in February 1989 with a flowsheet designed for greenstone ores with a carbonaceous expansion anticipated after depletion of the greenstone reserves.

Loki Gold Corporation of Vancouver, B.C. is developing the Brewery Creek Mine, an open pit heap leach gold mine, 55 km East of Dawson City in Yukon, Canada. Mineable reserves are 17.1 million tonnes of ore grading 1.45 grams/tonne, containing 24.8 tonnes (797 000 oz) of gold. Ore processing will employ a cyanide heap leach using run of mine ore. Permitting this mine has drawn significant attention because the heap leach technology, while proven in other jurisdictions, has not been used in Yukon. Engineering design of the heap leach was similar to that for heaps in more temperate climates, with the added issues of permafrost and cold weather operations. Solution balance with seasonal placement of ore and year -round leaching requires very large pond capacity for spring thaw conditions.

The paper presents the results of a plant test using WEMCO 1 + 1 enclosed flotation machines for inert gas (nitrogen) flotation of by-product molybdenite from copper sulfide concentrate. Copper depressant consumption in the rougher flotation stage was reduced by 68% as reagent consuming oxygen was removed from the flotation air. Unlike other nitrogen flotation systems used in the industry, nitrogen is recovered above the flotation cells and from froth in tails and concentrate streams and recycled, resulting in minimal nitrogen makeup requirement.

During the first four decades of flotation practice, close to 200 machine designs were patented, although only about a score were ever used commercially. By the end of that period, the rigors of use had resulted in obsolescence of most pneumatic cells, with a few mechanical cells dominating the field. After World War II, newer designs began to appear but most were modifications in varying degrees of older designs with special features added. Of the dozen or so most recent developments, almost all are pneumatic, relying on compressed air instead of impellers for motive power, although in several cases pumps supplement compressors. Table 1 lists a few of the more fully documented new cells, with their significant characteristics, along with similar characteristics of a widely used mechanical cell. New designs in general are emphasizing: bubble size control; in several cases, methods for delivering feed directly to the froth; methods for introducing and dispersing air through nozzles, eductors, packed beds, or permeable walls; and variable cell volumes, relative to capacities, ranging from very small, with less than a second of retention time, to the largest, with retention times of over 20 min. An important question is the extent to which any of the newer designs are based on locating weaknesses in current mechanical cell designs and then using these as a starting point for innovations. In the present study, the key subprocesses which must take place in a cell are outlined; mechanical cells are analyzed to establish where weaknesses may exist; and then alternative subprocesses are considered which could effect improvements. COMPONENTS FOR CELL DESIGN It is assumed that mineral surface chemistry has been modified as necessary to provide optimum potential floatability. While the cell process may affect this to a degree, cell design is primarily concerned with actualizing the existing potential floatability. Flotation columns have been readily accepted for use in most sulfide flotation plants; however, recently columns are being used in many other areas. Recent improvements in design methodologies have overcome many operating problems and led to improvements in metallurgy. In addition, physical improvements in column design have simplified their operation while leading to better control. The Turbo-Air External Bubble Generator has provided a method for bubble size control and variation in air holdup and carrying capacity. These have enabled commercial operations to improve grades and recoveries by optimizing performance.

Diesel-powered equipment is widely used in the underground mining industry and their popularity results from properties including efficiency, versatility, reliability, and durability. In the U.S. approximately 7,700 diesel engines were used in 177 underground metal and nonmetal mines as of 2005 [MSHA 2005], and these numbers have likely increased since that time. Diesel engines have been shown to be a major contributor to submicron carbonaceous, respirable, and total particulate mass in the air of underground metal mines [Zielinska et al. 2002, McDonald et al. 2003], and their extensive use results in approximately 13,000 underground metal/nonmetal (M/NM) miners (MSHA 2005) in the U.S. being potentially exposed to aerosols and gases emitted by diesel engines (MSHA 2001, MSHA 2006). Exposure to diesel exhaust has been linked to adverse health outcomes including cancer, cardiovascular, and respiratory diseases (Attfield et al. 2012, Silverman et al. 2012), and in 2012 diesel exhaust was categorized by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) as a Group 1 human carcinogen (IARC 2012). Exposure to diesel particulate matter (DPM) is especially concerning for underground miners since underground mine environments have been shown to have some of the highest levels of diesel exhaust in the U.S. (EPA 2002, MSHA 2001, MSHA 2006, Pronk et al. 2009). Due to the potential for elevated DPM concentrations in mines, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) promulgated a rule to limit exposures of metal/ nonmetal underground miners to DPM to an eight-hour time-weighted average (TWA) of 160 μg/m3 total carbon (TC) (MSHA 2001, MSHA 2006, MSHA 2008). Since this rule went into effect, DPM exposures have been reduced, but are still elevated when compared to other occupations (Pronk et al. 2009, Noll et al. 2015). MSHA compliance data between 2005 to the present show that underground blasters represent 21% of all DPM overexposures in M/NM mines and are one of the highest exposed professions in mining often resulting from low ventilation in the area where blasters are working. Because mines have difficulty controlling DPM in these low ventilation areas, additional control technologies may be needed to reduce exposures. Administrative controls, where miners work on off schedules or upstream of diesel vehicles to avoid the exposures to DPM (Noll et al. 2015) is one possibility, but these types of solutions are not always feasible or practical. A canopy air curtain is another potential control technology to help reduce exposures of blasters to DPM. Listak and Beck (2012) showed that this control technology reduced respirable dust concentration under a roof bolter’s canopy by 67%–75% and recommended air velocities greater than 0.5 m/s for dust reductions of greater than 50%. Additional work showed that a canopy air curtain could be designed for a shuttle car, and some initial testing by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) showed reductions of respirable mine dust between 66% to 70%. As seen in Figure 1, the canopy air curtain delivers clean air over the operator’s breathing zone. A fan draws in air through a filter to capture the dust and then supplies clean air beneath the canopy where a miner is working. The use of the canopy air curtain to reduce exposures to diesel particulate matter was first discussed by Noll et al. (2020). In this study the diesel canopy air curtain (DCAC) reduced the DPM concentrations under the canopy by up to 90%. For this research the DCAC was designed to attach to the basket cover of an ammonium nitrate fuel oil ( ANFO) loader (Figure 2) and provide clean air blowing over the miners as they work in the basket. The initial tests used clean air drawn from the mine’s intake and did not try to filter the DPM from the air. Filtering DPM has extra challenges when compared to filtering mine dust particles. The particles of DPM are smaller (submicron and nanometer) than dust particles (greater than 1 micron); therefore, the filtration system must be adjusted to capture submicron particles. A MERV 13 filter was used in previous canopy air curtain research on mine dust control, but this filter is only designed to capture 50%–75% of submicron particles, and this capture efficiency is too low for removing DPM, so a higher efficiency filter is needed. Higher efficiency filters increase the pressure across the filter media which results in decreased airflow or leaks around the filter and reduces the effectiveness of the control for protecting miners from DPM. The optimal filter needs to capture DPM particles at a high efficiency while still allowing the needed airflows to prevent contaminated air from entering the miner’s breathing zone. Listak and Beck (2012) recommended velocities greater than 0.5 m/s for dust reductions of greater than 50%. However, airflows too high have been shown to reduce miners’ thermal comfort; Roghanchi et al. (2016) suggest the optimal velocity for thermal comfort is between 1–2 m/s. Thus, airflow over the miner should be limited to the range of 0.5 to 2.0 m/s. This current study presents the results from research evaluating the reduction of DPM concentrations, under the DCAC, when using a higher efficiency filter (MERV 16) to remove DPM from the DCAC airstream.

"One of the major problems discussed over the last years is a possibility of mining of seafloor massive sulfide deposits. In spite of the pessimistic points of view on their commercial development, they are still of great interest and continue to be studied (Hannington et al., 2011). Recently, Barriga (2012) paid special attention to the underestimated amount of massive sulfide hydrothermal fields and pointed to the importance of the buried fields and subseafloor mineralization.This study examines the geochemistry of seafloor and subseafloor precipitates collected at the Peterburgskoe (19°52´ N) and Irinovskoe (13°20´ N) hydrothermal fields (MAR) during the 34th cruise of the R/V Professor Logatchev in 2011. These fields were discovered by the Polar Marine Geosurvey Expedition in 2010 and 2011, respectively (Shilov et al., 2011; Beltenev et al., 2012). The Peterburgskoe field, associated with basalts, is located 16 km west of the main rift valley at the depth of 2800-3100 m at the junction of a large non-transform discontinuity with the second rift ridge parallel to the rift valley. The Irinovskoe field occurs at depths of 2700-2850 m and has a northwestern satellite sulfide site, both confined to an oceanic core complex (MacLeod et al., 2009), which includes mafic and ultramafic rocks. The details of geological structure of the fields may be found in the relevant papers.Diverse samples were collected from the hydrothermal fields: seafloor massive sulfides, Fe-hydroxide crusts, SiO2-rich sulfide-bearing precipitates, and subseafloor mineralized rocks (Melekestseva et al., 2014a). Massive sulfides may be subdivided on the Fe-rich and Cu-rich types. The marcasite-pyrite, pyrite, hydroxide-marcasite, and chalcopyrite-pyrite (Fe-rich) mineral types are dominant in the Peterburgskoe field at lesser amounts of sphalerite-hydroxide-chalcopyrite and pyrite-covellite-chalcopyrite (Cu-rich) massive sulfides. The mineralized sulfide-talc-carbonate-chlorite, chlorite-sulfide-quartz, and hematite-sulfide-quartz rocks host stringer-disseminated sulfides including chalcopyrite, covellite, and pyrite."

The United States is the world's most productive nation and its citizens enjoy one of the highest material standards of living of any people in the world. Materials and energy are the lifeblood of any industrialized economy. Annually the United States uses over 4 billion tons of mineral materials and fuels, or 40,000 pounds per person as detailed in Figure 1. Domestic processed materials of mineral origin and energy are valued at more than $150 billion annually, and they are derived largely from domestic sources, supplemented by imports, as detailed in Figure 2. In recent years the superior productivity of the United States has also enabled it to give food and manufactured articles to many other less fortunate nations and peoples of the earth. What then is our concern with materials at this time? Seeing the burgeoning increases in our mineral demand: from 2 billion tons in 1950, to over 4 billion tons today, and projected to 11 billion tons by 2000 - we are getting questions concerning our ability to continue to increase production sufficiently for the future.

It is widely recognized that Semiautogenous Grinding (SAG) circuits require the use of effective process control techniques to achieve their full processing potential and to protect them from the harmful effects of overloads and grind-outs. This requirement is even more essential as the variability of the ore being processed increases. The new Chino Mines Company concentrator located near Santa Rita, New Mexico started operation in June of 1982. At least eight major rock types are mined and milled. Ore hardness, feed size, and specific gravity are quite variable. Typical feed rates per grinding line are 850-900 tph but extremes of 260-1200 tph have been encountered. Normal feed rate variations of between 400 and 1100 tph are encountered on a weekly and sometimes daily basis. Feed size varies with rock type from a maximum of eight inches for the harder ores to two inches for the softer ores. One somewhat unique characteristic of the Santa Rita ore body among major copper mines is the wide variation in ore specific gravity. Specific gravities of the major rock types range between 2.7 and 3.6. The specific gravity variations are due to large changes in magnetite concentration throughout the pit. The result of this is large variations in SAG mill throughput which can have a harmful effect on downstream ball milling and flotation performance. Due to these wide fluctuations in ore characteristics, it was recognized soon after startup that successful operation of the grinding circuit and the plant at large was dependent upon the development of an effective automatic grinding control strategy. Research at the University of Utah has suggested that control based upon critical but difficult or costly to measure variables would improve automatic control performance. A project team made up of the Chino process control staff, Kennecott's Process Control department and the University of Utah Metallurgy Department was established to assess these concepts at Chino. This paper describes the development and on-line plant implementation of an Extended Kalman Filter that uses simple models of the SAG milling process, to predict the volumetric loading, the rock mass, the water mass, and the ball mass within the SAG mills at Chino. The on-line estimation of these parameters is the first step in the development of an integrated SAG mill/ball mill control strategy which is hoped to L eventually maintain the grinding circuit at its maximum capacity, while balancing the grinding load between the SAG and ball mills. Examples of long term estimation with the models and filter are shown for typical operating conditions as well as a SAG mill overload and grind-out.

"The chemical treatment of mine-influenced waters is a longstanding environmental challenge for many coal operators, particularly in Central Appalachia. Mining conditions in this region present several unique obstacles to meeting NPDES effluent limits. Outlets are often located in remote areas with challenging terrain where conditions do not facilitate the implementation of large-scale commercial treatment systems. Furthermore, maintenance of these systems is often laborious, expensive, and time consuming. Many large mining complexes discharge water from numerous outlets, while using environmental technicians to assess the water quality and treatment regime multiple times per day. As an alternative solution, this paper describes the ongoing research and development of automated chemical treatment systems for mine water discharges. The current work explains the development of a bench-scale prototype that has been used to evaluate various monitoring, notification, and control strategies. Results from this testing are compared to present day practices to show the costs and benefits of implementing an automated treatment and monitoring program. INTRODUCTION Background The National Pollution Discharge Elimination System (NPDES), per Section 402 of the Clean Water Act, requires permitting of all point source discharges from coal mines. This program dictates that all water leaving a permitted boundary, whether it be process water or storm water, must leave through a monitored NPDES outlet. These permitted NPDES discharge points, also denoted outlets, outfalls or monitoring points, must meet a rigorous set of effluent limits to maintain compliance. Common effluent limits monitored by coal companies include but are not limited to iron, manganese, aluminum, total suspended solids (TSS), and pH. Raw mine water is often deficient in meeting these effluent limits, and as a result, various treatment processes are required to bring the water into compliance prior to environmental release. Depending on the mining and geologic conditions, water monitoring and treatment programs can constitute a significant operating cost for the mine operator. In Appalachia, acid mine drainage (AMD) constitutes one of the most significant and widespread water quality challenges that must be treated per NPDES guidelines. AMD is a general lowering of water pH that occurs when water and sulfide minerals interact within oxidizing conditions in coal and metal mining. Acid Rock Drainage (ARD) is a similar term that applies more generally to non-mining causes such as highway construction and other large-scale excavations. Today, mine influenced waters (MIW) is becoming more popular as the general term referring to all types of mining-induced water issues. AMD has been researched substantially over the last 30 years, with investigators studying various causal mechanisms and treatment strategies (e.g. Gazea, 1996; Ziemkiewicz, 1998; Skousen, 2000; Kleinmann, 2001; Johnson, 2003; Akcil, 2006; Kalin, 2006). This research has produced several pragmatic results, which provide numerous methods to predict, prevent, and treat AMD."

Laboratory tests were conducted to evaluate the silica collection efficiency of flooded-bed scrubbers with six different filter panel designs and at two operating velocities. Test results indicated that reductions in filter density negatively impacted respirable dust collection. Silica collection efficiency for the least dense filter was as much as 33 % lower than the collection efficiency of the densest filter. At the low operating velocity, the least dense filter allowed over 40% of the respirable silica dust in the scrubber intake air to pass through the unit, where it would be discharged back into the mine environment. Operation of the scrubber at the higher test air velocity increased silica collection efficiency, regardless of the filter panel tested. The density of the filter panels also impacted the quantity of air that is moved through the scrubber, with higher density filters reducing scrubber airflow. For each filter, the relationship between dust collection efficiency and air moving capacity must be considered to determine overall effectiveness for specific mine applications.

The U.S. Energy Research and Development Administration (ERDA) is currently conducting a national program to survey for uranium the conterminous United States and Alaska by 1980 using airborne and surface techniques. This paper discusses the techniques used and some of the results of airborne surveys conducted to date by Geodata International, Inc. Airborne gamma radiation and the earth's magnetic field data are measured to provide data leading to regions potentially more favorable for the exploration and discovery of uranium ore. High-sensitivity radiometric and magnetic field data have been gathered from an aircraft with an average surface altitude of 400 feet (Figure 1). Under most conditions, data are usable up to an aircraft surface elevation of about 1250 feet where limitations will be discussed. Results of data analysis under GJO-1632, GJ0-1644, GJO-1654 and GJO-1663 will be discussed.

Viewed abstractly, a mill may be defined as a mineral processing facility located somewhere between the mine and the tailings storage area, Just how mining operations and the demands of tailings storage affect mill design is, the subject of this paper. At the outset, it will be readily acknowledged that no two installations can, or ever will be the same. At one extreme is the bucket line dredge where the distance between the ?mine? and the tailings area is measured in terms of tens of feet. At the other extreme, the large open pit copper mines are frequently spread across twenty, miles or so of countryside with the ore moving to the mill, as exemplified by the operations at Bingham Canyon, Ray, or Ruth - the "upstream" counterparts of Garfield, Hayden and McGill. In each of these cases, mill location was largely determined by requirements for tailings storage and/or water supply.

The phytoremediation method is proposed to recover valuable metals from polluted soils. In this sense, the objective of this research is to determine if it is possible to use native plants in the recovery of precious metals from abandoned mining liabilities. The tailings samples containing Au and Ag were acquired from the northern region of Peru. Two native plant species, Stipa Ichu and Cortaderia Nitida, were used. Results show that Au was recovery around 19% (1.52 mg/Kg) and 25.43% (1.78 mg/Kg) by using Stipa Ichu and Cortadeira Nitida, respectively. Besides, Ag had a better recovery in the Stipa Ichu reaching a value of 6.83% (0.628 mg/Kg); in contrast, Cortadeira Nitida had an efficiency of 3.6% (0.814 mg/Kg). Bioaccumulation, bioconcentration and translocation factors were calculated by determining the concentration of precious metals in the roots and aerial parts of each plant. Results show that Stipa Ichu had a greater capacity of hyperaccumulated Ag compared to Au; while Cortaderia Nitida tended to have a better performance for Au. In conclusion, both plants are recommended for phytoremediation of mining liabilities.

Little faith can be placed in a coal resource estimate without a clear understanding of the estimate's accuracy. Different types of coal resource estimates require different levels of accuracy. Prospecting surveys typically are done with widely spaced boreholes, while a much higher level of accuracy is required for mine design. Either way, a measure of the accuracy clearly indicates the level of confidence that can be placed in the results of the estimate. Geographic information systems (GIs) are becoming a commonly used tool for resource estimation because they not only provide a database management platform but also the graphical capabilities to visualize resource characteristics. interpolation methods used commonly in these resource studies do not typically provide a quantitative answer to the question: "How accurate is the estimate?" By comparing localized measurements at multiple locations to the interpolated thickness distribution used in a resource estimate, a quantitative analysis of accuracy can be obtained. The technique is demonstrated with a case study from Central Appalachia.

The United States continues to be the largest producer and consumer of copper in the world. Table 1 on the following page shows several production statistics for 1974, the most recent year which the non-communist world copper industry might consider a good year, and for 1976 and 1977. In 1974 an estimated 24 percent of the non-communist world's newly mined copper was mined in the United States, and. 87 to 89 percent of that was from the western porphyry coppers. In 1976 U. S. new mine production was down to 22 percent of the non-communist world's newly mined copper, and the percentage of U. S. new mine production supplied by the porphyry coppers had risen to 89 to 91 percent. In 1977 the statistics remained the same as in 1976. U. S. porphyry copper production represented about 65 percent of U. S. refined copper consumption in 1974, rose to 75 percent in 1976, and dropped back to 61 percent in 1977 as imports of foreign copper into the United States began to swell.

"The solubilities of rhodium (Rh) in a molten silver alloy in doré-smelting conditions for treating copper refinery slime at temperatures of 1,000 to 1,300 °C were measured using a high-temperature equilibration-quenching technique and direct phase analysis by electron probe X-ray microanalysis. The results obtained indicate that the solubility of rhodium in molten silver is very limited: only 0.04 to 0.26 weight percent at 1,000 and 1,300 °C, respectively. The thermodynamic properties of rhodium in molten silver were estimated from the solubility data. The compositions of the solid rhodium alloys in equilibrium with molten silver-rich doré metal were also measured in this study. The excess rhodium in the doré alloy will precipitate during the refining as solid, greater than 99 weight percent Rh.IntroductionSilver refining is a core step of the processes of anode slime treatment and precious metals recovery in copper refineries (Hait, Jana and Sanyal, 2009; Ludvigsson and Larsson, 2003). It separates the oxidic materials, such as nickel oxide (NiO) and barium sulfate (BaSO4), from metallics after the de-coppering and de-selenation steps of the anode slime, and refines the silver bullion from the undesired elements present (Cooper, 1990; Hyvärinen, Lindroos and Yllö, 1989). Doré metal is a silver-rich alloy which after the smelting step will be refined electrolytically, and the remaining constituents of gold as well as the platinum group metals (PGM) will be subsequently recovered in their own processing stages.Because of low concentrations of PGMs in copper, they are typically soluble in the doré metal in anode slime treatment. This can be concluded from their binary phase diagram data with silver (Massalski et al., 2007). One exception is sometimes encountered in the anode slime smelting operations if the smelter feedstock is rich in rhodium, as may be the case if the raw materials contain secondary raw materials such as e-scrap. The solubility of rhodium in solid silver is less than 0.04 weight percent (Królas and Sternik, 1995), and its solubility in molten silver is highly uncertain. The only experimental information in the literature (Królas et al., 1993; Elliott, 1985) suggests that the silver-rhodium alloy system at 960 °C forms a eutectic, which locates less than 2 °C below the melting point of pure silver (Arblaster, 2015). Early observations (Rössler, 1900) propose that rhodium is insoluble in molten silver even if solid silver-rhodium solutions have been recently produced on a nanoscale (Kusada et al., 2010).The aim of this study is to measure experimentally the solubility of rhodium in molten silver at doré metal smelting and refining temperatures. The silver alloy used to mimic the doré alloy contained silver and about 1 weight percent of the alloying elements copper, gold, palladium, rhodium and tellurium. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) has recently studied several redirected scrubber discharge configurations in its full-scale continuous miner gallery for both dust and gas control when using an exhaust face ventilation system. Dust and gas measurements around the continuous mining machine in the laboratory showed that the conventional scrubber discharge directed outby the face with a 12.2-m (40-ft) exhaust curtain setback appeared to be one of the better configurations for controlling both dust and gas. Redirecting all the air towards the face equally up both sides of the machine increased both the dust and gas concentrations around the machine. When all the air was redirected towards the face on the off-curtain side of the machine, gas accumulations tended to be reduced at the face at the expense of increased dust levels in the return and on the curtain side of the mining machine. A 6.1-m (20-ft) exhaust curtain setback without the scrubber operating resulted in the lowest dust levels around the continuous mining machine, but this configuration resulted in some of the highest levels of dust in the return and gas on the off-curtain side of the mining face. Two field studies showed some similarities to the laboratory findings, with elevated dust levels at the rear corners of the continuous miner when all the scrubber exhaust was redirected towards the face either up the off-tubing side or equally up both sides of the mining machine.

When an open pit mine is deepened, more and more waste rock must normally be removed. Techniques for optimization of open pit design are well-established within the mining industry. The recommended method is to choose the open pit alternative with the highest net present capital value of open pit and future underground mining. When the open pit is mined out, the operation must be closed, or, if it is profitable, mining must start underground. When planning an underground operation we experience the same type of optimization problem that occurs when determining the optimal depth for open pit mining. When mining underground the ore body is often divided into a number of areas, blocks or slices, each containing a transportation system with trains, trucks, conveyors, etc. When all the ore within such a part of the deposit is extracted, the operation must be closed, or, if it is profitable, a new transportation must be developed. The question that now arises is: how large a pan of a deposit shall be included in the first development and how much shall be left for future consideration?

In most operating coal-cleaning plants, a significant amount of pyrite is recovered in the froth during flotation of high-sulfur coal. Reducing the pyrite recovery first requires that the primary recovery mechanism should be Identified, as different measures are required for reducing entrainment, locked-particle flotation, or true hydrophobic flotation. In this paper, evidence is presented which suggests that hydrophobic flotation is not an important mechanism for recovery of liberated pyrite from freshly-ground coal when the collector is a neutral oil, and that the bulk of the floated pyrite occurs either as a result of simple entrainment or by mechanical locking with floatable coal particles. Column flotation results are also presented which show that significant sulfur reductions can be achieved by reducing levels of entrainment.
