Shovels, trucks and repair bays for the trucks each play their role in the capacity of an open pit operation. It is therefore convenient to have a procedure for the capacity calculation which takes all 3 factors into consideration in a comprehensive manner. This can be done by means of a cycle model, earlier developed for the shovel-dumper circuits, when the repair facility with its number of repair bays is added as a superimposed service system, which the trucks visit at certain specified intervals. The calculation model transforms the mechanical availability of the trucks into their operational availability. The system's capacity in truckloads per shift and the trucks' operational availability of certain combinations of shovels, trucks and repair bays are shown.

Underground mining is relatively safe today, but no technique or equipment is completely fool proof and 100% reliable. The only sure way to prevent accidental death or injury to underground workers is to remove them completely from the hazardous environment. This alternate approach to underground work is now feasible. Tunnelling and mining systems can be built that could be remotely controlled by men operating consoles in a surface control room. This concept, called a teleminer, would use recently developed remote control technology to remove man from underground work but still give him the capability to remotely operate mining and excavating equipment as if he were actually in the working area. It is appropriate to present this concept in the session "Environmental Controls" because the rationale for environmental control in underground areas can be significantly modified if man is excluded from the underground operation. The development of teleminers cannot only reduce or eliminate most of the requirements for conventional environmental control, but it can also create new and powerful techniques for rapid tunnelling and excavation. TELEMINER CONCEPT The concept of remotely controlled mining machines is neither new nor untried.(1)(2) Conventional remotely controlled mining equipment employs the standard techniques of extending the controls of the equipment to a remote console. For example, the rotary cutters on a remotely controlled tunnelling machine are started or stopped by a human operator turning a switch on the remote control console.

Indonesia is a developing country in Southeast Asia with a population of some 180 million people. It has a stable political environment and currently enjoys high rates of economic growth. Indonesia has abundant reserves of natural resources, ample for its own needs and for export. Energy resources include oil, gas and coal. The oil and gas industries are well established domestically and for export. In the last few years, though, coal industry development has been rapid. Coal resources from bituminous to lignite amount to more than 30 Gt (33 billion st). That is more than enough to meet domestic needs and provide significant amounts for export. Figure 1 shows coal basins in Indonesia. Coals in Indonesia are generally young steaming coals. They are very low ash and sulfur, high volatile, bituminous B and C. The Indonesian government's state coal company is called Perum Tambang Batubara. The company has actively promoted the development of its coal for domestic and export markets. In particular, the government has placed priority on non-oil exports of which coal is a major element. The government strives to honor all contractural commitments for the export of Indonesian coal from contractor, private and government mines. From 1987 through 1989, coal production has increased from about 3 Mt (3.3 million st) to 9 Mt (9.9 million st). Exports have grown from I Mt (1.1 million st) to 3 Mt (3.3 million st). These are significant increases for a small industry with limited infrastructure. But with growing investment and development, these production and export levels will increase substantially, and Indonesia will be a significant world supplier of coal in the 1990s.

The basic reason for lining underground cavities is to keep the cavity open during its useful life by providing adequately for the support of the surrounding rock and for the necessary degree of water tightness. This covers the entire field of support methods from the simpliest timber support to reinforced concrete in all its variations as applied to tunnels, galleries or shafts. The problem involved in the design of more efficient and economical lining systems for even bigger cavities has been magnified by increased speed of advance made possible by better blasting tecniques, improved tunneling machines and more efficient material handling. Tunnel lining today requires a disproportionate amount of time and money compared to other operations mostly due to the manuel labor involved in its installation. One solution to this problem is the developement of an entirely new concept in tunnel lining designed notoonly to overcome this bottleneck but also to open up the field for further increases in speed of advance. This new lining system acts first as a fast protective armour then becomes the concrete metal form and ends up as reinforcement sheet inside the concrete lining. This system developed and manufactured by Bernold A. G. of Switzerland since October 1968 has been installed in 25 applications in Europe under all ground conditions from stable rock to unconsolidated ground.

"The supply chain for coal-fired power stations involve a multi-stage network of mining units, preparation plants, blending facilities and transportation systems. Attempts to optimize the supply chain have historically been difficult due to the lack of communication/coordination between the various groups involved in coal production, transportation and utilization. In light of this issue, a new approach for globally optimizing the coal supply chain called Micro-Price Optimization has been developed to simplify the optimization problem and to provide coal producers with fundamental insight needed to improve the profitability of their operations. This fundamental concept assigns unit values to each particles (or groups of particles) passing through production units. Optimization occurs whenever the maximum tonnage of positive value particles are recovered and passed to market, while the minimum tonnage of negative value particles are recovered. Elements considered by the concept include factors such as target boiler cost/efficiency, waste disposal costs, coal quality parameters, emission penalties, transportation charges, or other quantifiable impact factors. This article reviews the basis for the micro-price concept and provides a detailed industrial case study involving the determination of optimum coal qualities that need to be supplied by mine operators to feed a coal-fired power station. INTRODUCTION The performance of coal preparation plants have long been known to play an important role in determining the overall profitability of mining operations. This significance is due to the fact that the misplacement of just 1 ton/hr of clean coal to reject resulting from poor plant performance can represent nearly $300,000 per year in lost revenues for a mine producing a steam market coal (i.e., 1 ton/hr x $50/ton x 6,000 hr/yr = $300,000/yr). This loss can be even more pronounced, occasionally approaching $1 million per year for each 1 ton/hr of misplaced clean coal, for operations producing high-quality coking coal products sold into the premium metallurgical market (i.e., 1 ton/hr x $150/ton x 6,000 hr/yr = $900,000/yr). Detailed economic studies indicate that improvements in plant yield resulting from increases in organic efficiency have one of the largest overall impacts on mine revenue when compared to other cost centers within the mining operation. One of the first studies to show this important financial impact was reported by Norton-Hambleton Consultants (Norton, 1979). Their study indicated that an unfavorable change in plant efficiency was second only to coal transportation in terms of its impact on profitability, while an unfavorable change in the cost of underground mining was a distance third. This longstanding realization has continued to provide a strong financial incentive for coal producers to optimize the separation efficiency of their coal processing and blending operations."

Several factors need to come together in creating an integrate mining equipment dispatching system. At the hub of these factors ace the central dispatching formulas. This paper details the development of these central dispatching formulas and explores the combining of these formulas with other elements to create an integrated dispatching decision. WHY DISPATCHING? Truck dispatching implies and in reality should equate to mine equipment efficiency. Good truck dispatching will yield good mine equipment efficiency while poor truck dispatching will yield the alternative. Truck dispatching can either be automated through a computerized, process or it can be manual. Every mine with haul trucks has a truck dispatching system whether it is recognized or not. Even a system wherein the hauler operators determine where they are going for their next load is a truck dispatching system.

In 1981, North American Degerstrom Contracting began gold mining on the Little Rocky Mountain Range, near Zortman, MT. In the past four years, the price of gold has fluctuated from a high of $16/g ($500 per oz) to a low of $9.60/g ($300 per oz). With that kind of a moving target, profitability presents a management challenge. Based in Spokane, WA, Degerstrom employs 85 people at the mine. It is one of the largest heap leach operations in the nation. Last year, 8 Mt (9 million st) of low-grade ore was moved to the leach pads in a two-shift, five-day operation. The current pit being worked produces 218 kt/m (240,000 stpm) of leaching ore. Ore fragmentation critical The gold bearing ore has no defined patterns or seams. It is an igneous intrusion resulting from volcanic activity. It occurs spontaneously throughout the range. To recover the gold, areas are staked out and core samples are taken and analyzed. These data determine if the ore is rich enough to mine. Once mining begins, an average of 150 holes are drilled and blasted on a two-day rotation. Five Ingersoll-Rand T4s drill on a 4- x 4.5-m (14- x 15-ft) spacing to a 7.6-m (25-ft) depth. "When we first came to this site, we drilled on a 3.6- x 3.6-m (12- x 12-ft) pattern," said Paul Baker, superintendent for N.A. Degerstrom Contracting. "We did some experimenting using a high density emulsion in the bottom of the hole and filling the rest with regular Anfo." The high density emulsion saved the company on overall drilling and blasting costs since the holes could be spaced on a wider pattern and still achieve the high degree of fragmentation needed for leaching. Blasting is important because the gold lays in the natural strata of the rock. Also, the ore is not crushed before it goes to the leach pads. So complete fragmentation is critical. Terrain dictates loading/hauling system The shot ore is worked in 6 m (20 ft) benches by two Caterpillar 245 front shovels equipped with 3 m3 (4 cu yd) buckets, a 992C wheel loader with a 12.6-m3 (16.5-cu yd) bucket, and a 988E high lift fed by a D9H. A Caterpillar D10 tractor trap dozes to the loader. According to Baker, the 6 m (20 ft) bench is an efficient lift for the front shovel and the wheel loader. In tight quarters or in a pocket of ore, Degerstrom uses the 245s. For high production areas, the wheel loader is used. The hauling fleet includes 28 Cat 773 off highway trucks. The 45 t (50 st) trucks are seven pass loaded by the 245s with a 25-second cycle time per bucket load. The 992C loads the trucks in two passes in less than 30 seconds. The cycle time is four to five minutes for a 1.2-km (4000-ft) haul on grades that average 10%. Grades, in some places, exceed 16%. "We use the 773s because they have a low weight-to-horsepower ratio - that's what you need in steep country," Baker said. The trucks haul the shot ore to the leach pad. Currently, Degerstrom is working a pad that has a capacity for 5 Mt (5.5 million st) of ore. Building the leach pads The base of the pads resemble a large drainage basin. They take about one month to construct. A 0.3-m (1-ft) layer of impervious bentonite clay is hauled in and leveled by a Cat D9H tractor. A 30-mm (1.2-in.) PVC liner is then laid in place on top of the clay base. It, in turn, is covered with tailings from an old on-site mill. Degerstrom uses the tailings to protect the liner from tears when the ore is dumped. The ore is leveled and built up in 9 m (30 ft) lifts by the D9H. The tractor rips the top layer. Then, a network of plastic irrigation pipe is put in place to distribute a cyanide solution over the surface. The leaching solution percolates through the ore and dissolves the gold. The solution drains from the pads and is pumped to a 22.7-ML (6-million gal) pregnant solution holding pond. The liquid then goes through two separate filtration units. One unit removes entrained solids and the other side adds a zinc dust to precipitate the gold. This is collected on filters. The affluent then returns to a solution holding pond for redistribution through the pipeline network. Typically, 80% of the pad's potential recovery takes place in the first 30 days of leaching. The process stops when the ambient temperature falls below the cyanide's freezing level. And each pad has a leach cycle of four to five years before recovery values decline to a point where further leaching becomes uneconomical. At Zortman, it takes 9 t (10 st) of ore to produce 31 g (1 oz) of gold. It is therefore critical to keep total production costs down and efficiency high.

The paper presents a description of the procedures that were used to generate a ventilation criterion based on measurements of ambient mine air exhaust pollutant gases and ventilation airflow quantities. Today's economics dictate that a ventilation requirement be based on actual operating conditions. This will assure optimum economics and a safe working environment at the same time. The paper presents a methodology by which a ventilation requirement is based on the average maximum expected concentrations of nitric oxide (NO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), carbon monoxide (CO), and carbon dioxide (CO2) that equipment operators in one of our Southeast Missouri mines will be subjected to. A graph has been generated whereby the expected maximum levels of NO, NO2, CO and CO2 are plotted against the ventilation quantity of a mine stope.

Transitions between geological/geotechnical soil units have a critical impact on the operation and performance of a tunnel boring machine (TBM). Geostatistics-based probabilistic modeling is used to quantify the uncertainty in soil transition locations. This paper presents two unique soft-ground tunneling case studies where the results from the geostatistics-based probabilistic modeling are compared to the TBM data and as-encountered ground conditions derived from the actual TBM data. The assessment enhances the confidence in using geostatistics to improve ground awareness for efficient tunnel construction, minimizing different site condition (DSC) claims, and improving decision-making on tunnel projects.

Selenium (Se) in effluent waters has become a significant challenge for a number of industries. Toxicity studies and new reports of occurrence have certainly caused increased scrutiny and actions in the mining industry today (Sandy, DiSante, 2010). While initial activity in addressing selenium-laden waters were conducted in the coal mining industry, today a much broader range of mine types are beginning to search for solutions to selenium treatment of their mining waters, including both hard rock mining operations (gold, nickel, zinc, etc.) and soft rock mining (phosphate, uranium, etc.) Throughout North America, new regulations covering selenium discharge are either in place or being developed. While a number of physical/chemical approaches show promise in selenium treatment, when considering optimal cost and treatment efficacy issues, biological treatment ? particularly fixed-film biological treatment - is reported to be one of the most promising approaches to managing selenium-containing waters. Among biological treatment options, the fluidized bed reactor (FBR) has undergone extensive pilot testing for Se treatment in the last three years, including eight pilot programs, and the first FBR system is now operating at a coal mining site. In all tests, the FBR has been shown to be a highly cost-effective approach to selenium treatment based on its physical and performance characteristics. This is consistent with its history for reaching low levels of treatment in similar service for other oxyanions including perchlorate, nitrate and various metals. With the results from the most recent testing, the technology has been shown to be adaptable to an ever-broadening range of influent water conditions and flow rates, in varying terrains and weather conditions. Selenium occurs in various valence states from -2 to +6 (Sobolewski, 2005). The speciation of selenium plays a critical role in understanding the effectiveness of any approach for removal, especially to low levels. Elemental selenium is insoluble and has little effect on living organisms. Colloidal fractions are known to occur. In aqueous environments such as coal mining runoff, selenium is most often found as the oxygenated anions of selenite (SeO32-, Se4+) and selenate, (SeO42-, Se6+). Selenium is commonly found in mining waters in concentrations ranging from 3 to >12,000 µg/L. The U.S. National Primary Drinking Water Standard MCL is 50 µg/L for selenium (EU 10 µg/L; WHO 40 µg/L). The National Fresh Water Quality Standard is 5 µg/L for selenium. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has recommended that the National Fresh Water Quality Standard be lowered to 2 µg/L to protect fish, waterfowl, and endangered aquatic species. Several states have followed with enforcement actions at these same low levels. In Canada, permits may require stakeholders to monitor levels in water or biota, or to comply with guidelines, at either the National or Provincial levels, which can be as low as 1 or 2 µg/L in surface waters. Treatment of selenium in all mining waters presents a series of challenges. It can be present in relatively dilute concentrations and in streams with variable and often high flow rates. It can be present in many soluble and particulate forms, which may affect process design and treatability. The conditions of influent selenium-containing waters can vary, with issues such as temperature, pH, total dissolved solids and other contaminants affecting the ability to remove selenium selectively and economically. Treatment of selenium often results in the generation of a concentrated by-product requiring disposal, and re-release from residuals can occur. Beyond these issues, the physical environment of a mining operation can offer challenges such as remoteness and harsh and/or cold weather. Currently available selenium treatment technology (Table 1) includes biological treatment and a number of physical-chemical processes ? such as ion exchange, membrane filtration and adsorption ? that vary widely in efficiency and cost. Most treatment options remain either too costly and/or unproven for selenium-containing streams for reasons that include poor removal efficiency, variability in volume and composition of influents, system sizing and logistics considerations, as well as operating requirements.

With the increasing demand for minerals and the decline in the quality of ore reserves, technologies to maximize recovery are critical to a mine?s economic success. Many mining waters exhibit the potential to form hardness-based inorganic scales, which inhibit effective mineral recovery. Often, a continuously-fed chemical deposit control program is implemented by the mine site to inhibit these scales. The use of retractable scale coupons is the current industry standard for monitoring these programs; however, a key drawback to their use is the limited, and sometimes untimely amount of information they provide. A proprietary fouling analyzer has been developed that can be used to continuously monitor the formation of inorganic scales in mining process streams. Consequently, it can be used to continually, and more effectively, communicate the efficacy of an antiscalant program, thereby providing the ability to compare different scale control programs and to optimize their feedrates. Case studies presented validate the applicability of this technology to help optimize mineral recovery.

During the major expansion of the Inspiration smelter, which took place in 1973, the bulk material handling system underwent a matching expansion in order to move the required materials. Inspiration is the first smelter worldwide to employ electric smelting in conjunction with the use of Hoboken converters (1), (2). The installation includes a 51 -MVA electric furnace, five 4.25m (14-foot) diameter Hoboken converters, rotary dryer, bedding plant, acid plant, heat recovery steam plant, and gas and dust handling system. See Figure 1, Plot Plan. As of today, the 51-MVA electric furnace is the world's largest in the smelting of copper. Engineering design for the installation was per- formed by Treadwell Corporation of New York. The task of designing the conveyor system was complex because the system had to be installed while the smelter was operating and with minimum plant shutdowns, and it had to serve both the existing and the new smelter. Existing conveyors were redesigned where necessary and incorporated into the new conveyor system. See Figure 2, Flow Sheet. The system encompasses the handling of such diverse materials as wet and dry copper concentrates, cement copper, silica flux, cold dope, and concentrate and flue dust.

This paper presents the results of a recent study on the development of an in-situ testing method for determining the coal strength in mine pillars. The strength testing is performed in the horizontal holes drilled into the coal rib using the penetrometer. It is a hydraulically powered device that uses an indenter to press the surface of the borehole until the load reaches the failure point of coal. The pressure and the penetration of the loading pin are recorded by the data acquisition unit. The results collected from several coal mines indicate that this testing method is ideally suited for the realistic coal strength measurements. The new testing system not only improves the accuracy of pillar strength determination, but it is more cost efficient than the conventional method.

For the past 50 years, the primary crushing of stone at the Dolase Bros. Co. Richards Spur Quarry. 13 miles north of Lawton, Oklahoma, has been accomplished by a Traylor 42-inch gyratory crusher. The production capacity of the primary system, consisting of a feeder, grizzly, and the gyratory crusher, was approximately 2100 tons per hour. Shot-down scone was hauled from the working face about one mile to the feeder by a fleet of Caterpillar Model 773's and WABCO 60- and 65-ton trucks. In order to maintain production, nine to ten trucks and four Caterpillar Model 992 front-end loaders were required to be operational at all times.

Solids and liquid phase residence time distribution data is reported for a laboratory column flotation cell. The effects of various physical flotation parameters on residence time distributions are reported and analyzed. A plug flow model with recycle is proposed for the froth phase and a tanks in series model for the pulp. By comparison of two and three phase residence time -distribution data it has been shown that the use of liquid residence time distribution data to predict the residence time distribution of the solids in a column is not valid.

1. INTRODUCTION According to the classical economic approach of the open market economy, copper supply should be regulated by market forces which are (a) demand and (b) prices. In fact, demand is of primordial importance because prices are a reflection of supply-demand balance: they go up in times of shortages of supply and down when over-supply situation exists. In the past few years, this basic mechanism of market economy has been under pressure from a number of non-market forces, such as social and monetary problems of sane important copper producing countries; structural changes in copper mining companies through mergers with oil companies; and other factors which greatly contributed to distortion of the basic supply-¬demand equation. As a result, we have faced in the last three years a situation of oversupply rarely seen in the past, with a catastrophic fall in copper prices, huge losses at mines and unprecedented indebtedness of copper producers. This has deep repercussions in the copper business and its future supply outlook. This is particularly so when taking into consideration that high indebtedness and high interest rates conspire against the very survival of some traditional producers. As we write this comment (July of 1985), close to one half of U.S. copper production capacity is closed down, sane of it for good, while the same precarious situation exists in Canada, Australia, Zambia, and some other primary producers who cannot face present low prices with equally low costs. The question is then what this situation means for the medium-¬term future, until the end of this decade, Particularly when taking into consideration the fact that some of the factors influencing it are of a long-term character. 2. SUPPLY-DEMAND SITUATION IN THE LAST FIVE YEARS Since the last boon year, in 1979, when world copper consumption reached a record of 9.8 million metric tons of refined copper, demand dropped to only 9.0 million tons in 1982, when the crisis bottomed out, and then steadily recovered to the level of 9.7 million tons in 1984. Meanwhile, copper production, which in 1979 was only 9.4 million tons, in spite of the fall in demand, grew to 9.7 million tons in 1981 and 1983 and only temporarily was cut to 9.4 million tons in 1982 and to 9.5 million tons in 1984. As a result of this imbalance, hugh copper stocks were accumulated with supply systematically out¬growing demand by over 2 million tons at one time. With the Western World refined copper demand running at an average of 115,000 tons per week, this oversupply was equivalent to between 15 and 18 weeks production, i.e. twice as large as normal. This was immediately reflected in very low copper prices. Another contributing factor to relatively low copper prices was the lack of speculator interest for this commodity. Between 1981 and 1984 the world experienced a very intensive period of wealth distribution, high interest rates and intensive restructuring off world economy and its industrial sector. Therefore, much of the available money was attracted to more lucrative and attractive investments rather than to the lack-luster performance of copper, and for that matter, of the metal sector in general. The much announced and discussed recovery of the U.S. economy since 1983, and particularly in 1984, with an overall growth of the GNP by 6.8% in 1984, happened to be more oriented to the service sector than the industrial sector and therefore this recovery was not adequately reflected in copper consumption nor to metals in general. This put serious doubts about the future demand for copper. Consequently copper prices failed to improve in spite of an apparent fall in stocks and a healthy increase in the demand for copper since 1982. At the time of this writing (July, 1985), although same analysts claim that the available stocks are running at about 8 weeks of supply, which are considered to be below normal, copper prices are still very low at between 65 and 67 cents per pound of copper. "The drum agglomeration of nickel laterite and gold ores has been optimized through the design of experiments (DOE) using a Taguchi L16 (45) orthogonal array to determine the optimum conditions for maximizing average agglomerate size and minimizing the amount of fines. The effects of controllable operating factors including moisture content (nickel laterite ore: 34-37%; gold ore: 7-10%), retention time (2-3.5 min), drum speed (15-45% critical speed), drum load (nickel laterite ore: 8-32 %; gold ore: 6-22%) and acid concentration (150-600 g/L) on the performance of the agglomeration process were studied.For nickel laterite ore, maximum average agglomerate size and minimum percent fines (-1 mm) occurred under the following conditions: drum load (23.7%), moisture (36.5%), time (3 min), drum speed (30% critical speed) and acid concentration (150 g/L). Under the studied nickel laterite ore conditions, the most effective parameters for maximizing average agglomerate size and minimizing the amount of fines were found to be drum load and acid concentration, respectively. Drum speed had a statistically significant effect on minimizing the amount of fines. Maximum average agglomerate size and minimum percent fines (-1 mm) for gold ore occurred under the following conditions: drum load (19.3%), moisture (8.5%), time (2 min 15 s) and drum speed (40% critical). The most significant factors for maximizing average agglomerate size and minimizing the amount of fines for gold ore were found to be drum load, time and moisture.IntroductionSeveral heap leach operations have experienced problems in terms of poor recovery due to percolation issues caused by low-grade complex ores, tailings and clayey deposits. Poor percolation can lead to low metal extraction due to solution channeling or the development of impermeable/dead zones within the heap (Dhawan et al., 2012; Kappes, 2005). Improper heap building practices such as the use of loose agglomerates and inadequate attention toward the presence of clay minerals have been among the main reasons for percolation issues. During the transport of ore material, severe segregation of the material can occur. To overcome percolation problems, a major improvement was made through the introduction of agglomeration prior to ore placement. If the ore particles and agglomerates are of similar size, segregation can be avoided to a great extent (Dhawan et al., 2013; Kinard and Schweizer, 1987; McClelland and van Zyl, 1988). Agglomeration improves the uniform percolation of solution through ore heaps and is applicable to many ores, wastes and milled tailings (Bouffard, 2005; Dhawan et al., 2013). Manning and Kappes (2005) reported agglomeration/ stacking accounts for ~14% of the total heap leaching operating cost. The cost of binder is a primary contributor toward the total cost. Fundamental results obtained from research on the properties of the edge surfaces of kaolinite particles (~500 nm) are reported. Of particular significance was the development of the experimental protocol. Well-ordered kaolinite edge surfaces were prepared as an epoxy resin sandwich structure having layered kaolinite particles in the center of the epoxy resin sandwich. Images of the sectioned kaolinite edge surfaces were examined by atomic force microscopy (AFM), and the average thickness of kaolinite particles in this study was determined to be 38.3 nm ± 11.7 nm. Furthermore, the surface charge of the kaolinite edge surfaces was evaluated with a super sharp Si tip. The point of zero charge (PZC) of the kaolinite edge surface was determined to be below pH 4, in contrast to the traditional view that the edge surfaces of kaolinite particles may carry a positive charge at pH 4. This lower PZC of the kaolinite edge surface was attributed to the lack of isomorphous substitution in the silica tetrahedral layer when compared to the PZC for the muscovite edge surface. Our results are consistent with the particle aggregation and flotation behavior of kaolinite, and should provide the basis for improved flotation strategies leading to the efficient recovery and utilization of mineral and energy resources.

The subject of this paper is particle population balance models (PBM) that describe mineral impact crushing behavior; it is mainly concerned with the selection and fragmentation distribution function due to their importance in this context. The data obtained by Datta (1999) by applying impact pendulum testing to single limestone particles, used by Austin (2002, 2004a and 2004b) to obtain the principal parity of fragmentation functions, were processed in order to compare them with the results of other authors, such as Nikolov (2002 and 2004) and Vogel and Peukert (2003 and 2005) so as to increase knowledge of impact crushing. From this data it has been possible to obtain the performance models of the principal parameters of fragmentation function, thereby reducing the number of experiments necessary to model the impact crushing process. The authors also propose a simplification of the selection function model posited by Austin (2002).
