Proper employment of numerical stress analysis design tools is based on the demonstrated ability of a model to capture key elements of the geologic site model and accurately simulate how these elements interact with a mine design. While these tools have progressed markedly, they are, at heart, a gross simplification of the abundant complexity of a natural setting and its response to mining. A generic deep longwall site model was developed that includes aspects of the geology of deep coal mines in the Wasatch Plateau and Book Cliffs coal fields of Utah. The site model contains a set of common features and observations of how these features typically respond to mining. This site model was the basis for evaluating use of empirical, boundary element and volume element stress analysis tools to analyze the distribution of stress around a deep longwall panel. More specifically, this evaluation examined shifting of stress to panel abutments and gob, distribution of stress in the abutment and deformation and failure of bridging strata. Measurements of abutment stress changes at two sites in the Wasatch Plateau region were used to illustrate model calibration. Overall, these comparisons highlight the considerable differences between methods. Volume element tools can incorporate considerable detail and have fewer underlying assumptions, but this detail carries a considerable computational cost. Boundary element tools are much more efficient. However, this efficiency comes at the cost of added assumptions. These assumptions were challenged by the presence of a strong sandstone unit in the overburden, leading to boundary element results that depart significantly from volume element results. Empirical rules are the simplest, but are even more burdened by assumptions, many of which are implicit in underlying cases. Insight into the nature and impact of underlying assumptions in each method is essential to the proper use of results in mine design.

The general term "coal mine burp" refers to the sudden and violent failure of in situ coal. Coal bumps occur in most countries where coal is worked by underground methods, and are related to both geological factors and mining tech¬niques. Although no single set of circumstances is solely responsible for causing coal bumps, it is generally agreed that at least one of five conditions is necessary in order for then to occur: 1,2,3,4 (1) the depth of cover exceeds 500-ft., (2) the overlying strata are relatively strong and stiff, (3) the coal is structurally strong, (4) the floor does not heave readily, and (5) the mining method produces high stresses over a large area of the seam. Except for the last, these conditions relate to geological factors that are impractical to control. Consequently, methods of controlling or minimizing the occurrence of coal bumps usually are concerned with mining techniques. Coal bumps have been successfully controlled by both longwall and 'yielding pillar' mining systems 4. The longwall system is particularly effective in controlling bumps, but does not eliminate them completely, especially in strong coal seams being worked at comparatively great depths, say in excess of 2000-ft.5. Under such conditions, auger drilling or water infusion often prove helpful 5,6. These techniques are used to destress or otherwise alter the mechanical properties of the coal in an attempt to shift the peak "abutment pressure" away from the immediate vicinity of the face. Under 'normal' conditions, however, it can be expected that the coal near the face will be crushed under the prevailing high stress conditions and that the peak abutment pressure will automatically be shifted into the solid coal. In this context, coal mine bumps can be characterized as unstable releases of energy associated with successive yielding of portions of the coal seam with progressive mining. Longwall and yielding pillar mining systems are effective in controlling coal bumps because they ordinarily do not allow the zone of peak abutment pressure to become 'surrounded' by destressed coal.

Open pits and quarries are the major sources of all "hard rock" tonnage mined today. Normally, ore is fractured from the pit face by blasting and then truck-hauled to a primary crusher where processing begins; over- burden (or waste) is generally truck-hauled from the pit to dump areas. Truck haulage of blasted ore and overburden accounts for some 25 to 50 percent of total mining costs in a typical open pit and commonly is the largest single cost factor. Obviously then, cost reduction efforts should properly focus on improving existing haulage systems and developing new breakthrough techniques for material transport. Continuous flow systems for large tonnages ordinarily will result in a lower cost than batch systems such as truck or rail haulage. Continuous flow with pipelines for liquids and slurries, or conveyors for medium to coarse dry materials (in the -8 in. range) are the accepted economic answers for bulk materials handling over reasonable distances.

My personal story of mining development in Canada isn't all that rare -- you've probably heard something like it from other areas and other days several times -- but my case brings it up-to-date. I would like to Tell you briefly the history of Northumberland Mines Limited, a contemporary case of individual enterprise getting a mining operation underway. In a systematic study, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) evaluated seat designs in low- and mid-seam shuttle cars during production operations at two underground coal mines in southern West Virginia. The purpose was to support, with additional data, earlier findings that NIOSH ergonomic seat designs (featuring viscoelastic foam padding and lower-back support) may help reduce health risks to operators of coal mine shuttle cars. Eight shuttle car operators evaluated seven seat designs (one already in use in each vehicle and five NIOSH designs) relative to perceived and measured whole-body vibration (WBV) exposure (including vehicle jarring/jolting) and discomfort. Operators’ perceptions using a visual analog scale (VAS) and questionnaire ratings were compared with International Standards Organization (ISO) 2631-1:1985 fatigue-decreased proficiency (FDP) limits and measured WBV levels on low- and mid-seam shuttle cars. Objective and subjective data results indicated that NIOSH seat designs (with added adjustability, lower-back support and improved seat padding) performed better to reduce vehicle jarring/jolting levels and that shuttle car operators favored them over existing seat designs. The NIOSH low- and mid-seam shuttle car seats showed 45 to 77 percent better performance in FDP and 9 to 60 percent better performance overall in operators’ ratings. Considering the VAS results for low- and mid-seam shuttle cars under no-load conditions, operators rated the level of jarring/jolting 18 to 89 percent lower with the NIOSH seats. Reductions in measured vehicle jarring/jolting were 19 to 46 percent for the three-directional vector sum accelerations relative to the existing seats on the low- and mid-seam shuttle cars. Questionnaire responses indicated that operators for both shuttle car models rated NIOSH seat designs as more comfortable overall. Vehicle operators most frequently suggested adding armrests to improve the seats on the mid-seam shuttle car. A suggested improvement for the low-seam shuttle car was to make the seat a better fit for the operator compartment, which would enhance clearance between the operator and vehicle controls and allow for better seat adjustment and operator visibility.

Improvements in fine (28x0) and ultrafine (200x0) coal cleaning is an acknowledged goal with potential benefits in both steam and metallurgical coal markets. This work focuses on adaptation to fine coal flotation of FLOTE, a computer simulation model of the froth flotation process originally developed in the hard minerals field. FLOTE describes the flotation of solids based on particle surface activity, composition, and size. The quasi steady state model was applied to predict flotation performance at an Eastern Kentucky, full scale metallurgical coal preparation plant. Parameter estimation and model testing used detailed flotation test data from a five stage rougher flotation bank. Overall grade/recovery predictions compared well with known plant performance under variation of principally feed grade, plant throughput and reagent addition; however, grade/ recovery predictions for each cell weaken under overloading conditions. Analysis of grade/recovery over a range of sizes is presented. Suggested model improvements and extensions are discussed.

Gold extraction from refractory ores is still a problem. Gold losses in the cyanidation process are mainly due to the presence of sulfides and carbonaceous materials. Oxidation of carbon and sulfide minerals by sodium hypochlorite is a possible method to render the ore amenable to cyanidation, and earlier work by the USBM indicates that electrochemical generation of hypochlorite is promising. Laboratory work was carried out on the oxidation of pyrite and carbon in an electrochemical cell with a sodium chloride electrolyte. The results of preliminary tests are discussed in relation to the mechanism of electrooxidation of refractory gold ores and the estimation of current efficiency.

My subject this morning is coal liquefaction technology. Actually, coal liquefaction involves a number of technologies in a very complex system. The first slide shows the major components of such a system with arrows to indicate appropriate flows. The components are the facilities for coal feed preparation and handling; the coal hydrogenation or base liquefaction section; facilities for product separation and recovery, and in addition, facilities for the production of hydrogen from coal-based sources. A very rough break- out of the investments involved in these areas is given at the bottom of the slide. Investment is spread about equally among the three areas of operations Another way of looking at it is that the investments in what might be called support facilities are of the same magnitude as the base investment in the hydrogen facilities. Therefore, it is appropriate in a discussion of coal liquefaction technology to treat it as a system composed of a number of technologies. The next slide lists the various functions in the feed preparation section along with an indication of technology status. Storage, crushing, grinding, drying of coal all have been in commercial practice for a number of years. The slurrying and pumping of coal at least in water slurries, is practiced commercially also. The heating of coal slurries in oil to high temperatures under pressure is not in commercial practice and development and testing is going on by a number of people in this area. Some rather complex phenomena occur when coal oil slurries are heated to high temperatures.

Trees are an essential ingredient of sound reclamation in nearly all surface mining regions. There are, however, possible problems in current reclamation regulations and practices which need to be evaluated and remedied. Recognition and accomodation of growth requirements for trees and other plants will greatly increase reclamation success. Surface mining encompasses a series of processes from a pre-mining baseline study to bond release following revegetation. Land owners, and society, have a great interest in subsequent plant growth on reclaimed areas and in future land values.

At the Frood Mine of International Nickel, tests were begun in March 1966 to evaluate the use of low profile diesel Load- Haul-Dump equipment in cut-and-fill operations. In December 1966, this test was extended to drawpoint loading of caved ore at the Creighton Mine. The results of these tests conclusively demonstrated the effectiveness of this equipment in the operations at International Nickel. This paper describes the equipment used, the operation of the equipment, production data and operating details. Also discussed in the paper are other trackless equipment which works with the Load-Haul-Dump carrier. Production and Safety comparisons are made with the slusher method in bulk mining, giving the reasons for replacing the slushers at the mines of International Nickel Company of Canada, Limited, Ontario Division.

An open pit mine design system should have the characteristics of being flexible, versatile, and simple. All of these characteristics are necessary for producing a dynamic mine design. In other words, a design that can be improved, updated, and implemented. Flexibility is an important characteristic due to changing times. For example, the effects of a changing economy, increased knowledge of the mineral deposit, or improvements in mining technology can result in a considerable, if not a complete change in the long range mining plans. Since the short range mining plans are based on the long range mining plans, they will-also be effected. Also, it is very important to validate the information used in the design or the design itself. This means the system should have the flexibility of being able, not only to detect, but to correct errors. Versatility is another important characteristic of a mine design system due to the wide range of situations that may appear. First, a design system must be able to handle both long and short term planning. This is necessary because of the variability in the definition of a time range. Second, a design system must be able to handle different types of deposits. Special emphasis must be placed on this issue, because many deposits, if not the majority, do not fit predefined categories such as bedded, massive, or roll-front, etc . . . Furthermore, the true test of the versatility of a design system is not only the ability to create an ultimate design but also to schedule sequences for this design. Thus, the versatility of being capable to design with a variety of time ranges, variety of deposit types, and scheduling are all important characteristics of the design system.

An ore zoning technique developed by Climax geologists during the past forty years has been used to contour drill-hole assay values on cross-sections for fourteen porphyry molybdenum deposits in western North America, including the Climax and Henderson orebodies. Detailed geological studies of these large, complex deposits are essential in determining ore controls, which are the factors most critical to the zoning of MoS2 assays and to conceptualizing geologic models. The technique provides a detailed representation of the size, shape, grade distribution, and geologic continuity of the individual deposits. It demands a disciplined approach and adheres to rigorous rules while maintaining flexibility for adaptation to widely varying geologic conditions. By defining the limits that guide and control manual, computer-assisted conventional, and geostatistical reserve estimates, it exerts a strong geologic influence on the estimation process. A combination of ore zoning and geostatistical analysis of molybdenum deposits produces a significantly more accurate, precise, and defendable geologic reserve estimate than other methods.

Most recent work in the field of mine production scheduling has focused on either the computerization of the traditional methods or the development of sophisticated mathematical optimization models. Yet it is clear to all concerned that the optimizers need to be made more practical and the traditional approach needs to be made more optimal. This paper, along with another recent paper (Gershon, 85) open a middle ground between these two approaches. In that recent paper, a heuristic procedure for production scheduling was introduced. Here, a series of short term optimizations are used in a creative manner to approximate the true long term optimization. Since these small optimizations are aimed at blending to meet production quality specifications, this approach is most applicable to commodities where the blending function is very important such as coal, cement, phosphates or iron, to name a few. The traditional and the optimization approaches are so far apart that their' advocates have difficulty identifying with the other approach. This is especially true concerning the difficulty of understanding the optimization models for those not trained in the field of operations research. This paper takes the position that the pro- 120 per role of the operations researcher is to provide not only useful and advantageous approaches, but practical, understandable and implementable ones as well. This is the goal of the paper in describing a new approach, consistent with the traditional methods and aimed at approximating the results of the optimizers.

The present study reports a processing route to recover metals from integrated circuits of discarded random access memory (RAM) units containing ~ 66% printed circuit boards and ~ 33% integrated circuits. The integrated circuits are manually separated, grounded, classified, and subjected to water fluidization for the effective separation of metals. The significant separation was achieved via water fluidization, and the underflow fraction was magnetically separated. The magnetic fraction was thermally exposed in a muffle furnace, and the process optimization was carried out using a Box-Behnken statistical design. The detailed characterization at subsequent steps significantly aids the understanding of metal-plastic separation and enrichment. A concentrate containing 97% metals (Fe-59%, Ni-9.5%, Cu-7.7%, Sn-13.4%, Pb-5.6%, Ag-1.6%) with 96 wt% recovery can be recovered from discarded IC units. The process pursued is simple, adaptable, and environment-friendly, and the product can be used in conventional smelters.

INTRODUCTION Rapidly increasing capacities of equipment used to load and handle material at the face require improved haulage equipment and better methods of transporting the mined materials or "muck" to the shaft or slope and out of the mine to the processing plant on the surface. Increasingly, those transportation demands are being satisfied with underground belt conveyors. Such con¬veyors provide the most readily available, most efficient, and most reliable method of carrying materials in a continuous and rapid flow from the face loading equip¬ment to the surface plant. Almost universally, belt con¬veyors are used in coal mines and those nonmetallic and metallic mines operating in relatively flat bedded deposits. Belt conveyors are available in a wide range of capacities, mainly limited by belt width, belt speed, and weight of the material to be transported. They can be used on the level, on grades, on the surface, or under¬ground. They provide a rapid and constant flow of material, transporting the material as quickly as it is mined. Length of belt conveyors is almost unlimited. Where the haulage distance exceeds the practical capacity of a single conveyor unit, two or more conveyors can be used in series. Single conveyors more than 1.6 km (1.0 mile) long are common; multiple-unit conveyors in series operation are transporting materials over distances exceeding 16.1 km (10 miles). Depending upon mate¬rials being transported, job conditions, cost of the terrain being spanned, and alternative haulage methods avail¬able, conveyors can be conceivably economical for even greater distances. Table 1 lists maximum belt speeds recommended for most materials, relating belt speeds to belt widths. Table 2 lists capacities of typical conveyors of various widths and speeds, transporting commonly mined mate¬rials of various weights. ADVANTAGES OF CONVEYOR SYSTEMS For several years after their initial introduction, belt conveyors were available only with rigid side frames or a supporting structure of steel and concrete. That con¬struction limited underground applications, due to the cost and relative inconvenience of extending or retract¬ing the belt conveyor in the confined underground environment. However, during the last 20 years, wire-¬rope side-frame belt conveyors, as shown in Fig. 1, have become widely used in underground applications. Even wider use can be anticipated with their application to the fast movement of materials in surface mining operations. Advantages of the wire-rope side-frame belt con¬veyors were realized first in panel or section belt haulage in coal mines. Soon afterward, use of those conveyors was extended to gathering and main-line haulage. The mobility of the wire-rope side-frame conveyor is the principal reason for its success. The conveyor can be extended, retracted, dismantled, moved, and reassembled easily, even in relatively confined under¬ground spaces. The intermediate structure consists of rope support stands, wire-rope side frames, wire-rope tie-off stands, and the necessary carrying idlers and return idlers. An important and very attractive feature is the ability to suspend the conveyor from the roof in an underground mine, as shown in Fig. 2, leaving more room for improved housekeeping and allowing passage of face-service equipment, haulage vehicles, and other mining equipment. The conveyor's open construction allows quick and easy visual inspection of its com¬ponents for failures or malfunctions; it also facilitates checking and correcting conveyor-belt alignment. Other advantages contributing to the attractiveness and widespread application of wire-rope side-frame conveyors in main-line, slope, and surface installations include: lower capital costs, lower installation costs, lower maintenance costs, reduced impact on idlers and belting, reduced spillage and minimal cleanup, improved conformation to undulating terrain or mine bottoms, and the ability to span most obstacles without heavy structural support. CONVEYOR CLASSIFICATIONS Underground belt conveyors are classified normally according to their function. Generally, conveyors are classified into one of four main categories: 1) Panel or section conveyors normally receive the material to be transported directly from the face-haulage equipment. 2) Gathering conveyors are secondary haulage units that usually receive material from two or more panel conveyors. 3) Main-line conveyors transport all the material mined in the underground operations to the slope or shaft. Normally, they receive the material from two or more gathering conveyors. 4) Slope conveyors generally operate in tandem with the main-line conveyor, providing continuous Table 1. The California Surface Mining and Reclamation Act (SMARA) is the nation's first legislation establishing a statewide mineral resource policy governing mining activities that recognizes regional needs and retains local autonomy. The Southern California Rock Products Association supported this proposed legislation. It was through our efforts that SMARA was passed in 1975. The local planning and zoning processes, which are so critical to the mining industry, have been significantly improved with implementation of SMARA. Recognition of the importance of the mining industry is now being developed by the State Mining and Geology Board and the California Division of Mines and Geology (CDMG).

So far my consulting in industrial minerals has been confined principally to carbonate rocks,-salt, coking coal, and glass sand. Much of this work has been for companies either too small for a full-time geological staff or unaware of the value of employing one or more qualified geologists permanently. It gave me considerable personal satisfaction to see several of the latter companies employ one or two full-time geologists after the completion of a consulting contract with them. One possible reason why some companies lack the wisdom to hire geologists is that they are dominated by engineers who still subscribe to the old idea that engineers are self-sufficient in all fields. They could have learned this from their professors. I once knew a Dean of Engineering who got purple in the face when a faculty committee was discussing the financing of a broad gauged engineering project and suggestions were made that assistance be obtained from the Schools of Business and Law and from some of the science departments tie pounded the table and shouted "Engineers are trained to handle all this!" In teaching engineering geology some years ago I used to tell the class repeatedly that the course would not make them geologists, that the purpose was to teach them

In the event of fire underground, it is essential that all miners be warned as quickly as possible. With mine air, rapidly depleted of oxygen and contaminated with smoke and toxic fire gases, any delay in the warning signal could have disastrous consequences. Unfortunately, present mine, fire warning systems, such as stench, audible or visual alarms, telephones, and messengers, are often slow, unreliable, and limited in coverage.

This paper does not deal with the typical start-up issues of equipment, production capacity or work force. This is a description of the challenges faced and the changes made by the project team to bring to fruition the reconstruction of Port Inland. Many honored traditions and norms had to be overturned to find the winning combination that provided the productivity, flexibility and cost necessary to survive in today's competitive minerals environment. This paper covers the innovation in terms of machinery, operations, and management philosophy that permitted the renovation and reopening of Port Inland as a commercial limestone producer in the spring of 1992. Port Inland, constructed by Inland Steel in 1930, operated as a captive source of metallurgical grade limestone for the steel industry until its closure in 1989. Located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan on the north edge of Lake Michigan, the operations consist of a deep water port facility with crushing, screening and stockpile storage for 500,000 tons of finished product at the port. Ninety-nine percent of the stone is shipped via lake boat to ports within the Great Lakes. The operation is unique in that both metallurgical Dolomite and Limestone are produced on site. In 1930, Port Inland was at the fore front of technological advancement. It was the first major mining operation to use roller bearings and other equipment innovations. Over the 60 years of operation, Inland Steel placed emphasis on steel making technology and iron ore mining at the detriment of the limestone operation. By the early 80's, Port Inland was no longer a leading competitor. Inland Steel, unable or unwilling to spend the capital to modernize, closed the facility in the fall of 1989.

A new system for leaching many types of ores has recently been developed on a commercial basis by J and J Research and Development, Inc. of Hanover, New Mexico. This revolutionary new leaching system consists principally of three new leaching reactors; viz, (1) a large, air-agitates, column-like reactor for leaching crushed ores that is constructed in an underground environment and has the inherent ability to do a very efficient job of leaching, (2) a vat-like, air-agitated vessel for leaching an rinsing finely ground ores and , (3) an air-agitated copper precipitation column that is built underground and utilizes an inexpensive dense or heavy scrap iron as a copper precipitant. Each of these new reactors have been used in a large leaching plant near Hanover, New Mexico.
