Exposure to respirable crystalline silica (RCS) remains a serious health hazard to the US mining workforce who are potentially exposed as various ore bodies are drilled, blasted, hauled by truck, crushed, screened, and transported to their destinations. The current Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) permissible exposure limit (PEL) for RCS remains at approximately 100 μg/m3 , but it is noteworthy that the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has lowered its PEL to 50 μg/ m3 (with enforcement dates staggered through 2022 for various sectors), and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has held a 50 μg/m3 recommended standard since 1976. To examine a method for reducing RCS exposure using a NIOSH-developed video exposure monitoring (VEM) technology (referred to as Helmet-CAM), video and respirable dust concentration data were collected on eighty miners across seven unique mining sites. The data was then collated and partitioned using a thresholding scheme to determine exposures that were in excess of ten times the mean exposure for that worker. Focusing on these short duration, high magnitude exposures can provide insight to implement controls and interventions that can dramatically lower the employee’s overall average exposure. In 19 of the 80 cases analyzed, it was found that exposure could be significantly lowered by 20% or more by reducing exposures that occur during just 10 min of work per 8-hour shift. This approach provides a method to quickly analyze and determine which activities are creating the greatest health concerns. In most cases, once identified, focused control technologies or behavioral modifications can be applied to those tasks.

Waste materials caused by mining activities are an important environmental problem. Paste technology is a good alternative for waste management because it has many benefits in the aspects of environment, cost and safety. Disposal of process wastes in paste form is an attractive option for waste management, as it eliminates or reduces the risks associated with conventional methods. Due to the geotechnical characteristics of the paste, it is very similar to soil materials. So determining the geotechnical properties of the paste material is essential to durability of the paste. The some important geotechnical properties are compressive strength, porosity, shear strength, hydraulic conductivity, water content, consolidation, etc. In this study, the important parameters and the relation between them were investigated and obtained some results which will affect for optimum design of waste management.

Mining activities at Kennecott and Park City are similar in that both districts began operation in the last half of the 18th century, and both operated on a large scale for many years. However, they are different for two important reasons. First, the mines in the Park City district were always underground. The city of Park City was above many of those mine workings. It remained in place after mining activity stopped, and as the town became an up-scale ski resort, property values increased and the tailings dumps became desirable building sites. In contrast, Kennecott eventually became an open pit mine, and the growing pit effectively consumed many of the small towns that had grown up around the underground workings. Even towns on the periphery of the open pit were razed to allow for the disposal of mine overburden. Second, almost all mining activity stopped in Park City in the early 1970s, just as the first rigorous environmental legislation in the United States was enacted. (The Ontario mine operated sporadically until 1982.) Many mine structures, waste dumps, tailings ponds and piles, and tunnels were simply abandoned as the mining companies ceased business or were bought out. Kennecott, on the other hand, has been in continuous operation for more than 120 years, so a closure plan hasn’t been finalized. Nonetheless, environmental and social problems have arisen, and the company has had to address them.

Accurately estimating load distributions and ground responses around underground openings play a significant role in the safety of the operations in underground mines. Adequately designing pillars and other support measures relies highly on the accurate assessment of the loads that will be carried by them, as well as the load-bearing capacities of the supports. There are various methods that can be used to approximate mining-induced loads in stratified rock masses to be used in pillar design. The empirical methods are based on equations derived from large databases of various case studies. They are implemented in government-approved design tools and are widely used. There are also analytical and numerical techniques used for more detailed analysis of the induced loads. In this study, two different longwall mines with different panel width-to-depth ratios are analyzed using different methods. The empirical method used in the analysis is the square decay stress function that uses the abutment angle concept, implemented in pillar design software developed by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). The first numerical method used in the analysis is a displacement-discontinuity (DD) variation of the boundaryelement method, LaModel, which utilizes the laminated overburden model (Heasley, 1998).

This paper addresses historical aspects and construction sequencing of the subway complex under Columbus Circle in Manhattan; the structural elements of the rehabilitation and new construction; and the challenges associated with design and construction. PB is providing engineering services to New York City Transit (NYCT) for the rehabilitation of the 59th Street/Columbus Circle Station Complex that services over 150,000 customers daily. The project involves structural repairs, modifications and new construction requiring underpinning and temporary supports, custom framing details, and construction staging procedures to meet stringent limitations within the operating transit station and around the Columbus Circle street intersections.

On Dec. 20, 2013, an 8-m (26.2-ft) diameter Robbins hybrid single shield/earth pressure balance tunnel boring machine (EPB TBM) was launched to bore the Grosvenor decline tunnel for Australia?s Anglo American coal mine. The machine was built using onsite first time assembly (OFTA) in order to fit within a tight project schedule. Assembly at the remote jobsite near Moranbah, Australia took about four-and-a-half months, and then the machine was walked down into a launch tunnel. Two decline tunnels, at grades of 1:6 and 1:8, will be used for mine access to new coal seams. The hybrid machine is tackling mixed ground conditions ranging from sand and clay to varying types of sedimentary hard rock up to 120 MPa UCS, as well as coal seams. Methane gas is expected to be present throughout the tunnel, so the machine has been designed as explosion-proof-compliant to ERZ-1. ?Grosvenor is the first underground coal mine in Queensland to use a TBM for drift construction,? said Glenn Tonkin, Grosvenor project director. ?We are proud to be pioneering this technology.? Only about 300 m (984 ft) of ground in each decline tunnel is expected to require EPB mode, while the rest of the tunnel will be bored in hard rock mode. Thus, the design was optimized toward hard rock excavation.

TBMs offer key project schedule benefits with high rates of progress, which is a unique economic advantage recognized for mining projects where timing is of the essence in order to advance mining development and achieve early startup for operations. A thorough evaluation of the anticipated ground conditions should be performed as part of the decision to adopt a TBM for a mining project. Minimum specifications for TBMs are necessary in order to prevent the incorrect type of TBM from being used. Appropriate geotechnical investigations are necessary in order to provide key information on the anticipated subsurface conditions for careful planning and design of the proposed tunnel alignment. The overall site and geological conditions associated with some projects may suggest that it is not appropriate to use TBMs for some mining projects due to a perceived higher risk. Rhenish lignite will continue to play an indispensible role in the energy mix of the German Federal Republic for a long time to come. The use of lignite for electricity generation, upgrading and, if necessary, as a raw material is geared to the long term. The holistic management of opencast mines underpinned by approval law in the long term and a stronger focus on man, the environment and nature contribute to the acceptance of the mines by the local population. The same is true of state-of-the-art lignite uses: as regards their operational flexibility, lignite-fired power plants are ideal partners for the expansion of renewables. It is along these lines that RWE is continuing its power plant renewal programme as planned. With a view to that which will be conceivable the day after tomorrow, RWE is researching future technologies today in order to meet objectives such as security of supply, profitability and environmental compatibility to the same extent in the long term. Another important contribution to acceptance is public transparency and communications as means to support approval procedures and the implementation of measures in all areas related to lignite mining and utilization.

As robotic seabed drilling services mature so too the ways that clients engage with service providers to maximise their data requirements. This presentation reviews key considerations for planning and executing a successful seabeddrilling program in variable mineralised deposits. Some of the means of collaboration between robotic seabed drilling contractors and those hiring their services are explored; where improved efficiencies and recoveries over the period of a drilling programme could be achieved. Potentially new technology or methodology can be looked at to further improve these approaches.

On the east side of Washington DC, the DC Water & Sewer Authority is developing a Facility Plan for the Anacostia River CSO Control Projects, including 8 to 12 miles of CSO storage/conveyance and flood relief tunnels and associated facilities. The project includes major technical and non-technical challenges, including: completion under a Federal Consent Decree schedule; large diameter (estimated 25 to 35 ft) soft ground tunnels and shafts up to 200 ft depth; operations without use of active flow control systems; and close coordination with several major public and private construction and development projects that are being advanced in the project area.

The Donkin-Morien Mine in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, has successfully completed the excavation of a 7.6m (25-ft) diameter access decline over a distance of 3.5km out under the Atlantic Ocean. The tunnel, completed in December 1984, was driven through a sedimentary sequence of sandstone, siltstone, mudstone and various gassy coal seams prior to intersecting the Harbour Coal Seam where development work will commence. The tunnel was driven by a Canadian prototype tunnel boring machine (TBM) manufactured by Lovat Tunnel Equipment, Inc., Toronto, Ontario. The 7.6m (25-ft) diameter full-face shielded TBM operated at various grades from 0-20%. This paper outlines the TBM design, excavation, support and backup system utilized in the drivage. Problems encountered and drivage rates will be addressed.

Introduction Guar gum is a natural nonionic polysaccharide. Guaran, the functional polysaccharide in guar gum is a chain of (1?4)-linked ß-D-mannopyranose units with a-D-galactopyranose units connected to the mannose backbone through (1?6) glycosidic linkages. The poly-mannose chain is randomly substituted with galactose units at a mannose-to-galactose ratio of 1.8-1.0 [1]. Cheng et al. reported that the molecular weight of natural guar gum is 1.935 • 106 [2]. Robinson et al. found that the molecular weights of five grades of commercial guar gums ranged from 4.4 • 105 to 16.5 • 105 [3]. Guar gum is frequently used as a depressant of naturally hydrophobic gangue minerals (e.g. talc) in the flotation of PGM-bearing ores, and according to Harris et al. a wide variety of modified guar gums are available for this application [4]. The Canadian potash industry utilizes natural guar gum as a blinder of water-insoluble slimes in the flotation of potash (sylvinite) ores, a process that is carried out in a saturated KCl/NaCl brine. The role of the polysaccharide is to prevent a primary amine collector from adsorbing onto these unwanted fine minerals. Hydrophobic interactions between basal cleavage planes and the polymer appear to be involved in guar gum adsorption on talc [5,6]. Liu and Laskowski stressed the importance of metal impurities on mineral surfaces that can serve as the active sites for polysaccharide adsorption [7]. This postulate was consistent with the later observation that, in addition to hydrogen bonding, the adsorption of guar gum onto talc was strongly dependent on the surface concentration of magnesium sites [8,9]. In this case the adsorption process was visualized as metal-polysaccharide complexation facilitated by the cis-configuration of the hydroxyl groups of mannose monomers. Hydrogen bonding and chemical interactions with metal sites were also suggested by Rath and Subramanian in their studies on guar gum adsorption on biotite mica [10]. In a recent study, Wang et al. demonstrated that hydrogen bonding is the main driving force behind guar gum adsorption onto talc [11]. Their data also show that the adsorption density of guar gum on alumina is about five times lower than the adsorption density on talc. Pawlik and Laskowski reported that the amount of guar gum adsorbed on illite was independent of ionic strength over a wide range of salt concentrations [12]. The adsorption density of the polysaccharide on illite did not measurably change with ionic strength from that of distilled water to about 50%-saturated KCl/NaCl potash brine (~3N KCl/NaCl). However, guar gum adsorption on dolomite dramatically decreased over the same range of ionic strengths, and no reliable explanation of that phenomenon was proposed [12]. The water structure-breaking or structure-making capabilities of background ions are usually ignored when discussing adsorption mechanisms of polymers. The concept of “structure breakers” and “structure makers” was first introduced by Gurney, and Frank and Wen who postulated that each ion is surrounded by three distinct regions of water structure [13,14]. In the first layer, water molecules are tightly bound to the ion. The second region extends farther away from the ion and is referred to as the region of structure breaking. Only at larger distances, where the ionic field is weak, water molecules form the “normal” ice-like structure. It is also now recognized that the first layer can be further divided into the primary and secondary hydration shells. Small, strongly hydrated ions reinforce the “normal” structure of water and the region of structure breaking disappears. In contrast, large less-hydrated ions disturb the ice-like structure and generate an extensive region of structure breaking. Experimentally, these two effects can readily be distinguished through viscosity measurements. Increasing concentrations of structure-breaking ions result in a decrease of the viscosity of aqueous solutions. On the other hand, increasing amounts of structure-makers significantly reduce the viscosity of water. Alkali metal cations form a sequence known as the Hofmeister series. INTRODUCTION South Coast Water District (SCWD) operates the Beach Interceptor Sewer Tunnel(BIST) in South Laguna, Orange County, California between Monarch Beach and Aliso Beach (Figure 1). The 10,200-foot long BIST houses a 24-inch gravity Techite sewer pipeline critical to the SCWD Sanitary Sewer Collection System. The original tunnel and sewer pipeline were constructed in 1954 and the sewer line was replaced in 1974.Periodic inspections by sewer pipeline maintenance crews documented deterioration of specific intervals of the tunnel. Rotting timber supports and rock falls in the tunnel as a result of the deterioration were endangering the sewer pipeline and a 731-foot section of tunnel located at Thousand Steps Beach was determined to be in immediate need of repairs. SCWD and consultants Hatch Mott MacDonald (HMM) and Tetra Tec prepared a Work Plan for emergency tunnel stabilization and pipe protection measures that was implemented in January 2007. Normal access to the beach and the section of tunnel requiring repairs was limited to public stairs referred to as Thousand Steps and, therefore, all materials and equipment needed for the work were transported to the beach by ocean-going landing craft. Additionally, the emergency repairs had to be completed without taking the pipeline out of service. Numerous environmental, logistical and operational requirements had to be overcome to complete the challenging emergency repairs. GEOLOGICAL SETTING The Laguna Beach area is located in the Peninsular Ranges of Southern California. The project area is located on the southwest flank of Niguel Hill along marine wave-cut cliffs and slopes. The tunnel was excavated in the San Onofre Formation, a marine deposit, characterized by abrupt lateral and vertical changes in lithologies that vary from boulder to cobble and gravel size breccias to medium coarse sandstones with gravel, sandy claystone and siltstone. The interval of the tunnel that required repairs is located within the San Onofre breccia, a moderately-to-well cemented, poorly bedded to massive unit with angular to subangular boulder and cobble sized clasts of schist. The sandy silt matrix of the breccia is composed of quartz, feldspar and schist grains (Figure 2). GENERAL TUNNEL DESCRIPTION The approximately 6-feet high by 6-feet wide 10,200-foot-long BIST was hand mined in 1954 at the base of the coastal cliffs. Primary access is through twenty-one access adits from public and private beaches. The tunnel is located in an easement that extends beneath private property with residential structures situated 50 to 80 feet above and horizontally in close proximity to the tunnel alignment. The mining industry generates an estimated 2.3 billion tons of solid waste each year and the total accumulated mineral resource solid waste at both active and inactive mine sites, approaches 30 billion tons. Five industries generate 85 percent of mine solid waste: copper, phosphate, iron, uranium, and coal. Over the past several years, the Federal government has shown increasing interest in the proper disposal of solid wastes generated by the mining industry. Three new pieces of federal legislation have been passed recently beginning with the most comprehensive regulatory authorization passed in 1976, the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) which has been amended to the Solid Waste Disposal Act Amendments of 1980. RCRA is implemented and enforced by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and intended to control municipal and industrial solid wastes. Next came the passage of the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act (SMCRA) of 1977 which is implemented and enforced by the Department of Interior to control coal surface mining and the surface effects of underground coal mining, and finally, the recent Uranium Mill Tailings Radiation Control Act (UMTRCA) of 1978 implemented by EPA and enforced by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to control uranium mill tailings disposal.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) uses light-scattering dust monitors (nephelometers) in its research to develop dust controls to reduce respirable silica dust overexposures in miners. Recently, the model 1500-pDR, an active nephelometer, was introduced by Thermo Scientific. Testing was completed to ensure compatibility with the metal/nonmetal mine dust personal sampling unit (M/NMDPSU). Results of testing demonstrated that gravimetric concentrations measured from the 1500-pDR are comparable to the gravimetric concentrations measured using the M/NMDPSU, without need for correction, under commonly observed dust loading conditions.

"SUMMARY The Istanbul Strait Road Crossing Project includes a 3.34 kilometer subsea tunnel excavated by TBM with an excavation diameter of 13.71 m. The tunnel will incorporate two road decks, each employing two traffic lines and shoulder with the daily capacity of 100,000 light vehicles. The tunnel alignment crosses full face rock sections with heavily fractured zones due to tectonic events as well as a long central stretch of difficult mixed face and very variable soft ground conditions. The demanding ground conditions and the large diameter in combination with realized face pressures well above 10 bar required a highly specialized and well adapted TBM. The paper describes the project challenges and the related technical solutions incorporated within the TBM design as well as the real site experience. INTRODUCTION In 2013, a 13.71 m diameter Mixshield was manufactured in Germany for the Istanbul Strait Road Crossing Project. The delivery of the TBM in late 2013 was a major milestone for the Istanbul Strait Road Crossing Project, also known as the Eurasia Tunnel Project. The Eurasia Project (www.avrasyatuneli.com.tr/en) consists of a 14.6 km route including a 5.4 km tunnel segment in its central part crossing the Bosphorus. The 3.34 km subsea section of the tunnel was excavated in closed mode using a Mixshield TBM. The remaining tunnel length is constructed by sprayed concrete lining (SCL) method followed by a cast in place (CIP) lining or by cut and cover (CC) structures for the TBM transition boxes (Figure 1, right). Other project sections on the European and Asian side consist of upgrading and widening surface access roads towards the tunnel. Conceptual ideas of connecting Asia with Europe via a tunnel crossing the Bosphorus have been around for an extended time and only became realistic towards the end of the 20th century based on significant technical developments in mechanized tunneling. Feasibility studies for a new Bosphorus crossing in 2003 and 2005 confirmed and suggested a road tunnel in its present alignment as the preferred solution. Following an international tender process the Ministry of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications of Turkey assigned ATAS, a special purpose company formed by Yapi Merkezi (Turkey) and SK E&C (South Korea), to design, build and operate the Eurasia Tunnel Project. The Implementation Contract was signed in February 2011. In 2012, Herrenknecht AG was selected as the supplier for the 13.71 m Mixshield TBM."

Economically favored Cr and Cu leaching out process from spent power plant fly ash (PPFA) had been investigated. PPFA, bearing of C, S, V, Ni, Cu and Cr, has been widely used as an assistant fuel in cement industry. Recent environmental regulation in S. Korea prohibits using PPFA as a fuel. Many researchers have also studied on extraction V and Ni from PPFA. Due to low concentration of V and Ni, 2% and 1%, respectively, economical and environmental friendly process could not be found. In this study, Cu and Cr have been removed in an economical way and which satisfied with KS Extraction Test. The rest unburned carbon, V2O5 and NiO2 in residue were found to be applicable for indoor and outdoor colored bricks or deodorant panel. Various parameters such as pH, lixiviates and time on leaching behavior were investigated in order to leach Cr and Cu remaining C, V and Ni. The development of a tool for assessing the environmental sustainability of mining facilities is described in this study. The tool is based on the analysis of basic components of the examined system, i.e., the quantities of the incoming materials and outgoing wastes, their hazardousness and scarcity, the utilization of water and energy resources, and the biodiversity. The developed tool provides both qualitative and quantitative assessment of the environmental performance of a mining facility in a broad time scales (past-present-future) and is easily applicable from non environmental experts. Moreover, relative software is developed to further support the application of the methodology. The implementation of the tool is expected to lead to an improved understanding of the environmental performance of a mining facility and more importantly identify the areas of significant environmental concern. However, based on feedback from industries, a number of shortcomings of the approach have been identified so far and are presented, indicating further actions for the advancement of the proposed tool.
