The aqueous biphase separation process (ABS) has been used to separate ultrafine industrial minerals. The partition behavior of TiO2, Al2O3, Fe2O3 and kaolin was not pH dependent. The partition behavior of SiO2 was, however, pH dependent. The partition coefficient of kaolin in PEG 3400/ Na2CO3 biphase system was = 150 and that of the silica in the same system was = 0.02, resulting in a separation factor of = 8500 between kaolin and silica. The aqueous biphase separation system was used to separate free silica from kaolin in a raw clay sample from Mexico. The partition behavior of mica, feldspar and clay from North Carolina was also evaluated.

It is becoming evident that traditional methods of econometric analysis are inadequate in estimating-the long-run supply of minerals. Econometrics is limited to extracting estimates from observations of the theory predicts that the least cost deposits will be exploited first.1 The estimation of parameters from past data then must lead to biased projections of the future. Mining conditions in the future will be worse than in the past and it is the impact of the future conditions on cost that we need to know. In this paper we present a methodology for dealing with this problem. We estimate a "cumulative cost" function that yields the long-run marginal cost of mining as a function of cumulative output produced over time.2 This is relatively easy to do for coal mining in the United States where exploration for new deposits is not a major factor in supply. The first step of the procedure relates cost to the rate of output and to the geological conditions of the mine. The second step combines geological information on remaining deposits with the cost function to yield the cumulative cost function. A central theme of both these steps is the interaction of economics with geology. The best deposits are selected first and in each step of the estimation allowance must be made for this fact. The problem of depletion is part of the general problem of structural change. The change through depletion in the nature of the exploitable mineral stock is only one factor that calls for an analysis sensitive to the changing circumstances of the industry. The Pb-Zn ore bodies in the Pine Point district are localized in paleo-solution structures that developed as the result of post-middle Givetian subaerial exposure of the carbonate barrier complex. Sulfides are concentrated in transgressive pale-solution structures that acted as natural bypasses between aquifers and loci for mixing of fluids of different character, one of which contained metals and the other reduced sulfur. Complex ore textures indicate rapid early sulfide precipitation followed by slower sulfide growth. Evidence for both sulfide-carbonate equilibrium and disequilibrium conditions suggest fluctuations in ore fluid composition. District and ore body metal distribution patterns may reflect the nature and movement of mineralizing fluids.

A new step in the Bayer process has been used to recover NaOH and to reduce its content in red mud. After digestion, the residue is separated from the Bayer liquor and goes through press filters, which enables the recovery of NaOH and decreases the moisture content. It is well known that red mud is one of the most important sources of scandium. For this reason, the goal of this work was to characterize a Brazilian red mud (BRM) for scandium recovery. The sample was collected after the press filter system process. Analysis of energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF), scanning electron microscopy/energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) was performed. Microwave digestion using an acid mixture was carried out to determine the concentration of the main elements. Fe2O3 represented 40% of the BRM, and the Sc concentration was 43 mg/kg. The SiO2 content was 24%, which is the highest value found in the literature, whereas the sodium concentration was the lowest. A literature review was carried out to compare results with BRM, as well as the current studies for recovery of scandium by the leaching/ion-exchange process. Scandium recovery using a leaching/ion exchange process may be possible with efficiency higher than 90%. The greatest challenge is the occurrence of silica gel formation during leaching.

The gray, dark gray and black colors of the sediments and the presence of pyrite in the Carlin, Jerritt Canyon, Horse Canyon, Betze, and Gold Acres sediment-hosted disseminated gold (SHDG) deposits indicate that these rocks are not oxidized with respect to carbon and iron sulfide. Both ore and non-ore host rocks generally are dark colored. Analyses for noncarbonate carbon (usually called organic carbon) in samples from SHDG deposits and related unmineralized rocks indicate that these rocks contain from a few tenths to a few percent carbon. We use the term noncarbonate carbon because, strictly speaking, organic carbon denotes carbon that is bound to hydrogen. However, the carbon present in SHDG deposits and related rocks has very little hydrogen chemically bound to it. Rocks with less than 2% organic carbon are usually gray in color. The dark colors in our samples are due to the relatively high temperatures that these rocks have experienced relative to organic matter maturation. We confirm the results of Nelson et al. (1982) that previous reports (for example, Radtke and Scheiner, 1970) were incorrect in reporting significant amounts of humic acids, extractable hydrocarbons (bitumen) or "carbonaceous" material. We believe these reports had problems with contamination or misdirected emphasis. Our samples consisted of unweathered rocks, collected mainly from mine cuts (benches, trenches, cores) and put into glass containers or wrapped in aluminum foil to avoid contamination. Only a few samples were collected from natural outcrops. We were careful to avoid samples in proximity to blast holes that were packed with ammonium nitrate and diesel fuel ("ANFO"). Contamination by ANFO may explain some of the previous reports of hydrocarbons, pyrobitumens, humic acids and anomalous nitrogen. When we were collecting samples, it was apparent that in addition to lithologic and color differences, the surface appearance of the rocks was distinguishable: "preg robbing" material that had a sooty surface; "graphitic" rock with a shiny surface; and more ordinary rocks that had a flat gray or black appearance. [Preg robbing is a term for ores that adsorb gold from the milling circuit; the graphitic material had not been x-rayed to actually identify graphite.] We hoped that laboratory study of these samples would show some fundamental differences that we could relate to ore genesis. Even though these sample types appeared different in the field, we could not distinguish any differences in thermal maturity (see below). Normal petroleum/organic geochemical laboratory procedures (solvent extraction, Rock-eval, pyrolysis-gas chromatography) failed to yield much information because the carbon was over-mature relative to oil and gas generation. Rock-eval results show less than 20 (± 20) mg of pyrolizable hydrocarbons per gram organic carbon (and an indeterminate Tmax) indicating that the organic matter in these deposits is burned-out relative to petroleum generation [with an H/C (atomic) ratio of less than 0.41. Because of the non-definitive results from standard organic geochemical methods, x-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy were used to characterize the carbon. Prior to XRD, samples were treated with HCl and HF acids (1) to remove quartz that has a peak near 26° [20] at the position of the 002 peak of graphite and (2) to concentrate the carbon to a level detectable by XRD. The residue was put on a colodion mount and analyzed by XRD. The XRD analyses yielded a broad peak at 26° [20]. The shape of this peak indicates that the carbon is more thermally mature than anthracite rank coal but less mature than crystallized graphite. The development of larger size flotation machines, which started in the 1950's and 1960's, is still proceeding. The largest mechanical flotation machines avail-able today have unit volumes in the range of 38.2 to 43.9 M3 (1,350 to 1,550 cft). Designs for mechanical flotation cells of unit volumes as large as 70.8 m3 (2500 cft) are available. The development of these "giant" flotation machines has been and continues to be motivated by the increasingly critical forces of higher energy and capital costs, decreasing ore grades, and lower (real) prices for the products. As an expansion of a previous publication, this paper reports the further development of an improved mechanism for these large flotation machines. The starting point in the develop¬ment of a new mechanism was the identification of design and performance features of existing machines where improvements were desirable. The result of this work was a mechanism which s is an improvement over existing designs. This new design is characterized by an efficient overhung stator and a vortex profile rotor. The overhung design of the stator removes unnecessary and undesirable baffling in the lowest parts of the tank, while maintaining a quiescent froth layer. This results in lower power consumption and better pulp circulation and solids suspension. The vortex profile rotor acts as an efficient pump, with higher pulp recirculation rates as evidenced by the increased air dispersion capabilities, good solids suspension, and low power consumption.

The year 1988 for the minerals indus¬try was one of favorable worldwide economic conditions for continued, rationally constrained growth. There was continued improvement in relations between market economy nations and the Soviet Union and China. The "shooting war" between Iran and Iraq ended. Soviet troops withdrew from Afghanistan. And conditions were generally favorable for economic growth in developed market economy countries. These favorable conditions were darkened only somewhat by the continuing foreign debt crises discernible in some major mineral producing developing market economy countries. However, there were situations developing that became major headlines in the late spring - situations that may have pronounced effects in 1989. The most significant event is the muddled situation in China. There is a good chance of worsening international relations and consequent restraint of development projects that could prove beneficial to China and her international partners. Of only slightly lesser evident significance was the death of Ruhollah Khomeini in Iran. This could lead to a variety of paths for the new Iranian leaders. Continued outbreaks of ethnic unrest in the Soviet Union clearly presented problems to the Gorbachev regime. This unrest has raised questions of how far the doctrines of "glasnost" and "peristroika" would be extended, including extensions into the minerals field. Another area of unrest is Panama with its tainted election and the Western Hemisphere's obvious dissatisfaction with the Noreiga regime. While not a direct threat to any major mineral industry enterprise, the political situation certainly presents a potential threat to the Panama Canal. Filtration systems with disposable filter elements (DFEs) are used in the underground coal mining industry to control particulate matter emissions from diesel-powered permissible and nonpermissible coal mining equipment. This study was conducted in underground mine conditions to evaluate three types of high-temperature DFEs used in those filtration systems. The DFEs were evaluated for their effects on the concentrations and size distributions of diesel aerosols and concentrations of nitric oxide (NO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2). Those effects were compared with the effects of a standard muffler. The experimental work was conducted directly in an underground environment using a unique diesel laboratory developed in an underground experimental mine. After an initial DFE degreening period, the filtration system with all three DFEs was found to be very effective at reducing total mass concentrations of aerosols in the mine air. The effectiveness of DFEs in filtering aerosol mass was found to be a function of the engine operating conditions. The efficiency of the new DFEs significantly increased with operating time and buildup of diesel particulate matter in the porous structure of the filter elements. A single laundering process did not exhibit substantial effects on the performance of the DFE elements. The effectiveness of DFEs in removing aerosols by number was strongly influenced by engine operating mode. The concentrations of nucleation mode aerosols in the mine air were found to be substantially higher for DFEs when the engine was operated at high-load modes rather than at low-load modes. Initial heating of certain DFEs resulted in visible white smoke and substantially elevated aerosol number concentrations. The effects of the DFEs on the total concentration of nitrogen oxides (NOX) were found to be minor. The NO2 fraction was found to be generally lower for the DFEs than for the muffler. The engine-out NO2 fraction of the total NOX was found to be substantially higher for low-load modes than for high-load modes..

The total iron ore production in Sweden in 1969 was 33.3 million metric tons. 31.7 million tons were exported mainly to Western European countries. 27.8 million tons (87 per cent) originated from the mines at Kiruna, Svappavaara and Malmberget, located just north of the Arctic Circle in Sweden. Planned production for 1970 is 25 million tons during 10 months, due to a strike at the beginning of the year. Present production plans for the next five years expect an annual export capacity around 33 million tons in 1975, including 5.7 million tons of pellets. The mining and shipping at the loading terminals of Narvik on the Atlantic coast and Luleå at the Gulf of Bothnia are managed by LKAB - a 96 per cent state-owned company. 4 per cent of the share capital is owned by the private Grängesberg Company. The railway - 106 miles from Kiruna to Narvik and 130 miles from Malmberget to Luleå - is operated by the State Railways in Sweden and Norway. Comprehensive expansion of the Narvik ore port will be carried through during the next five years to increase the annual shipping capacity to at least 35 million tons and meet the development of rapidly growing ship sizes.

Improved liberation and flotation of kerogen from eastern oil shale were accomplished with high-temperature grinding and a1 so with the addition of fuel oil during the grinding stage. Liberation measurements indicated that possible coalescence and aggregation phenomenon of kerogen particles during grinding may reflect this behavior. Additionally, ultrasonic treatment of the rougher concentrate prior to cleaning improved the quality of separation.

The grinding mill is probably the most common unit operation in mineral processing. There is, however, much that can still be done in the way of optimization. This paper discusses the results of a well-controlled pilot-scale test in which the performance of a tumbling mill equipped with a conventional rubber lining and lifter bars was compared to a tumbling mill equipped with a smooth rubber lining of the magnetic type. The results indicate that the smooth lining is about 14% more effective with respect to energy consumption. By optimizing the size of the grinding media, the mill capacity can be increased in many grinding operations. In this specific case, grinding with a -20-mm ball charge required 26% less grinding energy than grinding with a -30-mm ball charge. The energy savings can, in most cases, be converted to an increase in capacity. The wear of the grinding media is difficult to assess over a short test period, but the results suggest that the wear is somewhat less when a smooth lining is used. A determination of the wear of the linings was not included in this study, but it is generally accepted that the use of magnetic linings reduces the lining costs dramatically. Computer simulation using the Millsoft code developed by Mishra et al. confirms and explains the increased effectiveness of comminution when a smooth lining and smaller grinding balls are used.

The recently completed In-Pit Crushing and Conveying Project at Phelps Dodge's Morenci Mine is rated among the world's leading materials handling projects. The operation involves the crushing and transport of more than 109,000 tonnes per day of copper ore, utilizing regenerative conveyors capable of providing over 5.5 megawatts (7,000 hp) of equivalent electrical energy. The Bardon Trimount, Inc. stone quarry in Ashland, Massachusetts was the recent subject of a quarry closure review report. The quarry produces aggregate using standard drilling and blasting techniques. Stone is processed at an on-site plant. Noise monitoring data collected during the closure review indicate that the quarry generally operates within the quiet range. There is a decrease in noise while the quarry is not operating. Levels of dust associated with the quarry are low. Unpaved roadways are the greatest contributors of fugitive dust associated with the mining operation. The quarry cannot be seen from any homes within the town of Ashland, except during the winter months. The visual impact of the quarry on surrounding properties is minimal. Further quarry development is likely to reduce visibility of the quarry from some areas.

Middelburg mine is an opencast export mine operating in the Eastern Transvaal Coalfields of the Republic of South Africa (Figure 1). The mine was commissioned in 1983, to its original design capacity of 4.25 million sales tonnes which was subsequently raised to 5.5 million sales tonnes in 1989. This increase in export tonnage was brought about through an increase in the mines export allocation and the revision of management strategies. The maintenance of this increased tonnage with minimal additional capital has been achieved through improved operational efficiencies and the upgrading of planning operations through the purchase of an Enhanced Mine Scheduling Software Package (EMSSP/MINESTAR). Simultaneously with this requirement were additional factors that contributed to the implementation of the EMSSP. The mine was owned by a joint venture of two partners and is operated by Middelburg Mine services (Rand Mines Pty. Ltd) (Figure 2). This structure of ownership required the evaluation of numerous planning options to be under-taken concurrently and hence the need for an efficient streamlined scheduling pack-age that could fulfill this requirement. Compounding the EMSSP needs further, were the problems experienced in the export market, these being the external pressure from current and new suppliers in the market place which obliged management to provide solutions to rapidly changing market conditions. These fluctuating market conditions have had a direct effect upon the mine's planning strategies because of the large percentage of the mine?s sales sold on the international spot market. The sanction factor for all South African exporters has had a negative effect upon price and this was compounded further through internal competition in 1987 via suppliers attempting to maintain the market position.

Equations which predict the unsteady-state response of the continuous froth flotation cell to changes in operating conditions are necessary for the rational design of an automatic flotation cell control system. Unfortunately application of automatic control to froth flotation separation equipment has lagged behind application to other types of separation equipment (for example distillation columns, absorbers, liquid-liquid extractors, etc). This may be due partly to the unavailability of suitable mathematical models for predicting the dynamics of continuous mechanical froth flotation cell. This paper presents the results of a comparison of four dynamic flotation models (in transfer function form) using the same set of unsteady-state continuous flotation data. One of the transfer functions tested has been presented previously in the literature (1), another (2) has been accepted for publication, and two are given here for the first time. In addition, data are presented which confirm earlier findings that the mixing in the rotor-stator type cell is nearly perfect. The specific purposes of this paper are to: (1) provide the automatic control systems designer with several alternative dynamic mathematical models of the continuous mechanical froth flotation cell (2) give some idea of the relative a¬bility of each model to predict unsteady-state behavior by fitting each model to the same set of experimental stimulus-response flotation data and (3) provide more insight into the macro-mechanisms prevailing in the continuous mechanical flotation cell. The dynamic models which are presented and tested here all relate the time variation of the concentration of a given floatable mineral in the tailings to a time-dependent disturbance in the same floatable mineral concentration in the feed to the flotation cell.

It is a generally accepted and widely discussed fact that the world in general, and the United States in particular, face a shortage of energy at the present time which will become worse in the future. There is, however, no sign of a similar concensus as to the actions which would prevent or overcome this expected shortage. An immense variety of solutions has, however, been put forward, ranging from the purely political to the outer fringes of sophisticated technology. One resource which surprisingly is often only cursorily included in this discussion is the immense known petroleum reserve lying within the United States. When this subject is discussed, indeed, it is usually in the context of the improvements in production or new discovery rate that could be expected to result from possible politico-economic actions that would raise the real price obtained for domestic crude. This interest in the potential for improved domestic production is undoubtedly justified, but very little attention is normally drawn to the fact that even under the most favorable policy framework the majority of the oil that has been, or will be, discovered will remain in the ground due to the inherent limitations of production through surface wells.

The present study investigates the influence of ferrous iron (as FeSO4) and ferric iron (as Fe2 (SO4)3), and pyrite (FeS2) on the ability of bacterial leaching of a high-grade sulfide Zn–Pb ore. In this regard, shake flask experiments were carried out at 5% (w/v) pulp density of the ore sample (having 40.7% Zn and 12.4% Pb initial metal content) using a consortium of mesophilic iron and sulfur-oxidizing acidophiles. A concentration of 0.04 mol/L of ferric iron in the leaching media was found to be optimum for zinc extraction without affecting growth of the microorganisms. Under this concentration, the dissolution of Zn, Pb, Cd, and As was found to be 57%, 0.2%, 0.03%, and 9.9% in 25 days. Using ferrous iron in the media, 0.16 mol/L of Fe2+ was found to be the optimum concentration for efficient bacterial growth and metal dissolution (54.6% Zn, 0.08% Pb, 0.03% Cd, and 10.2% As) from the sample in 25 days. On the other hand, using pyrite as the source of energy for bacterial growth, an initial 12-day lag period was observed when compared to the effect of ferrous iron in the media. Under the optimum concentration (test with 0.24 mol/L iron in the form of pyrite), the dissolution of Zn, Pb, Cd, and As was found to be 39.8%, 0.1%, 0.03%, and 10% in 25 days. The surface chemistry analysis indicated formation of a sulfur layer over the particle surface that hindered reagent diffusion and affected metal recovery through bioleaching.

Beginning in late 1985 and continuing through 1987, Bureau of Mines personnel investigated longwall chain pillar and entry design in two-and three-entry gate-road systems at a deep underground coal mine located in central Utah. To evaluate their respective stability characteristics, four chain pillars and two longwall panels within the two separate entry systems were instrumented with Bureau of Mines hydraulic borehole pressure cells to continuously monitor vertical and horizontal pillar and panel stresses through adjacent panel retreat. In addition, supplemental entry closure information was obtained from sites located in the vicinity of the instrumented pillars. The findings presented in this report demonstrate the practicality of evaluating mine pillar stability using in situ methods and support three significant conclusions regarding ground control aspects of the investigated two-entry system: (1) Total areal entry loading was considerably less for the two-entry system, as opposed to the three-entry system, (2) a smaller percentage of opened ground in the two-entry system contributed to a marked reduction in roof falls, and (3) lower areal loading in the two-entry system suggests improved ground conditions when mining the underlying seam.

In many multiple-sulphide ore flotation processes, it is desirable to concentrate each of the various valuable minerals into separate products. Although there are a variety of techniques and chemicals which can be employed to produce efficient separation, two basic types of flotation circuits are used: The Differential Flotation Circuit and the Bulk/Selective Flotation Circuit. Figure I depicts these two circuits in their most simplified form for the production of two concentrates and one tailing product. If three or more valuable minerals are present in an ore, a variety of combinations or extensions of these two basic flowsheets may be used. There are many examples of the successful application of both circuit types with ores containing similar minerals. Each ore must be tested individually to decide on which circuit is best. However, the following general statements can be made: 1) The differential circuit will have higher capital and operating costs than will the bulk/selective circuit due to higher rougher capacity requirement. 2) The differential circuit will achieve better separation than will the bulk/selective circuit since it is usually easier to reactivate a depressed mineral than it is to depress an already active mineral. If the deactivation problem with the bulk/selective circuit . . in can be overcome, there is a clear economic argument for its use

INTRODUCTION The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is currently being constructed for the United States Department of Energy in SE New Mexico. The purpose of the project is to store low level transuranic waste in an underground environment which will ensure a safe atmosphere for the life of the stored waste. Ohbayashi was contracted by the DOE to sink two shafts and underground drift development which will be used to conduct a series of long term experiments in order to finalize the suitability of the geology and the environment for the transuranic waste storage. The two shafts sunk at the WIPP site were excavated around a borehole by conventional methods. The excavation around a borehole eliminates some of the established blind bottom sinking techniques, but creates unusual problems which must be pre-planned and scrutinized closely. An analysis of the slashing to the borehole technique will be given. WASTE SHAFT The waste shaft (w/s) is 5.8 meters (19 feet) in diameter and will be used primarily to transport the radioactive waste to the underground storage area. A pre-existing 1.83 meter (6 feet) diam borehole was taken to a depth of 655 meters (2150 feet) to the existing drift; at this level, a 38 meter (125 feet) sump was installed using blind bottom sinking techniques.
