Sustainable Development is a very broad initiative in the mining industry, with major components running over the entire life of the mine. It likely commences with pre-exploration permitting and continues to post-mining final closure and possible land reuse. Most major mining corporations embrace the sustainability initiative, either out of a sense of social responsibility or out of necessity in order to continue doing business. But many may view the overall initiative as an added ?cost of doing business.? In many elements of sustainability, there clearly can be added cost ? some as simple as complying with self-imposed sustainability reporting. Fortunately, one major element of sustainable development can clearly be shown to reduce costs ? energy resource management. This paper will describe how the mining industry sustainable development effort differs from other industries, but can benefit from their experience in energy resource management. The mining industry can utilize proven methods from other industries to further their energy management efforts. In addition, many of the resources developed and employed to promote better energy resource management in non-mining industrial settings will be listed.

Due to the remote locations of mining projects and the need for long transmission lines to provide electrical power, mining sites often operate with poor network power quality and low short-circuit capacity. To cope with this situation, more and more mining operators are considering the installation of appropriately designed synchronous condensers together with power factor correction and harmonic filter systems (PFC & HFS). The installation of such power quality equipment is viewed as a technological advancement in the mining application. An adequate level of short-circuit power is essential and has to be ensured for the safe and reliable operation of especially large cycloconverter-driven gearless mill drive systems (GMDs) used for grinding. This paper explores the impact, technical advantage and reasoning for the selection of this advanced hybrid technology to cope with the power system challenges of future mining projects. It also delves into the potential problems and how to address them.

However excellent the geologic map of an area is, it can only show what is exposed on the ground. It cannot and should not generalize the information nor complete the picture by inference: this is left to the examiner. Consequently, it becomes justified for him to use all expressions of geologic structure in order to gain an additional dimension in geologic interpretation, and particularly so in mineral exploration. In previous studies related to Arizona, the known faults were the starting points and a host of interpolated, supporting geologic factors described in earlier publications ascertained the presence of a series of structural trends and lineaments found to be rather continuous and persistent, even though unsubstantiated by geologic maps. In present studies pertaining to the humid environment, with the same aim of seeking major structural trends and lineaments, the starting points are morphologic expressions such as straight lakes and straight segments of rivers, among others, because there generally is not enough geology available. An example is given herewith for an area that straddles the International Border, north of Spokane. In both semi-arid and humid environments, one observes that mineral deposits quite often occur close to the intersection of a major fracture or lineament with some secondary trend.

Talc has been the focus of recent civil litigation based on claims that asbestos minerals exist in talc deposits and therefore have caused asbestos-related diseases in those who have regularly used talc products. Such litigation, and ensuing confusion over the petrology and asbestos content of these deposits, challenges the talc mining industry in Montana and elsewhere in the world. The talc deposits in southwest Montana were formed by hydrothermal alteration of dolomitic marbles and are still actively mined. In general, talc formed by hydrothermal alteration of preexisting carbonate rocks is known to be nearly monomineralic and lacking in amphiboles. This paper includes data from analyses of representative ore samples from this mining region in southwest Montana. The results conclude that the presence of asbestos minerals — both amphiboles and chrysotile — is unlikely and that the ores are nearly monomineralic, as expected. Samples were characterized using a suite of analytical methods, namely, powder X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy and electron microprobe analyses, which allowed us to determine the minerals present and the formation process. Our data and interpretations suggest that previous identification of asbestos minerals in these deposits is not accurate.

The mining industry faces many difficult challenges, for example, lower ore grades, smaller and deeper deposits, and longer transportation distances. In the past, there have been remarkable innovations in both equipment and the types of mining methods for which it is used, which have resulted in economies of scale. This has led to an increased use of bulk mining methods, like sublevel and block caving, which has increased productivity and reduced costs. Haulage alone plays a major role. Current haulage techniques are a significant cost driver, which account for between 15 and 30% of the overall capital investment (capex) in a mine and are an increasingly part of the operating costs (opex). The paper introduces a simulation tool of main haulage system in underground mining. Therefore, performances and the costs of the three most common underground main haulage systems, rail, truck, and conveyor, are calculated using a developed modeling tool. The tool was applied and validated in a case study carried out with the LKAB Kiruna Mine in northern Sweden.

A statistically designed pot grate- kiln test program was conducted to determine the agglomeration process variables necessary for increasing the low temperature disintegration resistance (LTD) and reducibility (R40) of magnetite-based Empire acid pellets. The ASTM tumble index and compression strength were to be maintained at an acceptable level. Six process variables, bentonite addition level, preheat time and temperature, firing time and temperature, and cooling rate, were investigated within the constraints of the Empire plant. The bentonite addition level and firing temperature had the largest effect on pellet properties. The results of this program were verified during a pl ant trial. The target firing temperature at the Empire Plant has been decreased for increasing the LTD and R40 of commercially produced Empire pellets

International Minerals & Chemical Corp.'s New Wales operation near Mulberry, FL, is reportedly the world's largest concentrated phosphate chemical fertilizer and phosphate-based animal feed ingredients complex. Its latest expansion represents a $191-million investment. Two Northwest draglines were put to work at the operation early last year and, according to a company spokesman, total production from the units have more than doubled that from older rigs. This article describes how the draglines are used and provides details on the New Wales operation. The principle product at New Wales is phosphoric acid, produced by reacting ground phosphate rock with sulfuric acid in large concrete attack tanks. For each ton of phosphoric acid produced, New Wales must dispose of about 4.5 t (5 st) of waste gypsum. New Wales stores the gypsum on-site, and uses durable Northwest draglines to help handle the material. Two Units Maintain the Gypsum Stack After the gypsum is separated from the phosphoric acid through 23-m-diam (75-ft-diam) vacuum filters, it is mixed with water from a 121-hm2 (300-acre) recirculating cooling pond and, in slurry form, is pumped to the top of a 121-hm2 (300-acre) gypsum stack located adjacent to the cooling pond. The slurry contains mostly gypsum (CaSO4), with small traces of silica and other elements. The water at this point is corrosive, containing from 1-2% phosphoric acid. Its pH usually ranges from 1.5-2.0. Water drains from the gypsum stack into the cooling pond. Only about 15% of the pond's water, however, comes from the gypsum stack; the balance is from various sources throughout the complex and is held in the pond to cool before being returned for reuse in the plant. About 97% of New Wales' water needs come from this recycling program. The gypsum remains on the stack, inert, ready for future processing if it becomes economically feasible. Throughout the handling process, Northwest draglines work around the stacks' rim, continually directing the waste flow and digging out dried solids to heighten the perimeter dike to provide more storage volume. When wet, gypsum is extremely soft. When dry, it compacts well and provides footing with enough bearing capacity to support the machines. Processing at New Wales started in 1975 and the gypsum storage area has already been built up 12 m (40 ft) above grade. A total of 14.8 km3 (12,000 acre-ft) of solids are now stored. "Current mine control stations are either single-position systems with high engineering effort or all-in-a-box solutions with low integration possibilities of third-party devices. Above all, both approaches are cost-intensive and not feasible for small companies. This paper shall be an inspiration of how to enhance the productivity and monitoring of an existing mining system in a modular way by introducing a proven technique of the ongoing digital revolution: A Wi-Fi network based on the communication protocol OPC UA. The starter kit consists of a single-board computer, a WLAN access point and any electronic sensor. INTRODUCTION The majority of the European mining industry is run by small and medium deposits (Europe Geology, 2017). This is due to the fact that most ore mines in Europe are widely distributed within the continent, are generally small and additionally they are often steeply inclined. Such ore bodies are normally mined with underground mining methods and must be excavated with high selectivity because of their small thickness. That is why the economy of scales, higher efficiency through bigger machines, cannot be used in most deposits in Europe except for lignite mines. It is important to find an alternative possibility to improve the efficiency of European mines for making them competitive internationally. For cost optimization and profit maximization it is necessary to use the trends of industry 4.0 and to broadcast these into the mining industry to reach a technological advantage. The goals of the EU within the Horizon 2020 funded project are to shorten the actualisation of the mine and block model to hours, improve the communication with Through the Earth (TTE) via very- or ultra-low frequency for long-time monitoring of the abandoned workings, and develop a cost-effective mine control station for optimization of mining processes in Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) as well. This paper deals specifically with the new approach for data acquisition, transmission and visualisation of a mine. SCADA AND ERP IN MINING There are already many Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) programs on the market, but these are normally not developed for the mining industry. At the moment this leads to three options. • To hire a system integrator, who shall build a complete control station for one mine that requires a high amount of knowledge in programming and cannot be maintained by the mining company itself. • To buy different types of out-of-the-box systems, whereby every system can include some of the used technology. In this case a huge amount of project engineers and operators – at least one per system and shift- is required. • To buy every machine and program from one company including the service contracts."

The prestressed concrete industry in particular, and the precast concrete industry to some extent, are rank newcomers to the concrete construction field compared to the cement, ready-mixed or concrete masonry industries. This young industry reflects its youth and vigor in its enthusiasm, optimism and the belief that it can reach any goal it chooses to set -- and it is setting its sights high. The prestressed and precast concrete industry fully expects to become the major structural and architectural material by the 1980's. Before exploring how the industry expects to reach this goal, a brief look at the origins and the growth of the industry may be useful in an evaluation of the feasibility of this goal. It was always recognized that concrete, strong and efficient for supporting loads which cause compression, was weak and inefficient when used to carry loads which induce tension. Thus the reason for reinforced concrete in which the concrete efficiently carries the compression in a flexural member while low grade steel bars reinforce the concrete in the areas 'of tensile stress. (Fig. 1). The steel being relatively inexpensive, can passively, but quite effectively carry tensile force while the concrete carries compression. The concrete in contact with the reinforcing also protects the steel from corrosion and acts as insulation to provide a superior "built-in" fire resistance. The major disadvantage of reinforced concrete relative to its main competitor, steel, is its weight in relation to its load-carrying capacity. After 30 years of successfully mining gold, Newmont Gold has temporarily ceased production from the original Carlin Pit. In late 1993, the Carlin East decline was driven and an extensive underground exploration program was started. Today, Newmont Gold produces refractory ore from the Carlin East Underground at the rate of 864 t/d (950 stpd). Annual production is more than 3.1 t (100,000 02). More than 70 underground miners will be employed during Carlin East's estimated six-year mine life. About 70% of the ore at Carlin East is mined by mechanized longhole stoping with delayed, cemented backfill. The remaining ore is mined by underhand drift and cemented fill methods.

Success of The Carter Mining Company's safety program can be primarily attributed to "total immersion" of all operating and staff personnel in program design and implementation. Currently, the Company operates two surface coal mines in Campbell County, Wyoming. Total employment is about 440 and current annual production is about 15 million tons. The safety program has evolved from one which was administered primarily by staff personnel (the Safety Department) to one which requires active participation by line management and operating personnel. Lost time accident frequencies have declined from a high of 1.86 per 200K hours worked in 1978 to zero in 1982. Reportable accident frequencies have declined from slightly over 5 to slightly over 2 during the same period. Analysis of program results indicates that the most important achievement by the company has been to gain strong commitment to safe operation by all employees. It is important that program format and content be frequently changed and modified so that: 1) The requirement for safe job performance is communicated well and often, 2) The safe job performance message is trans- mitted in new and interesting ways, and 3) Operating personnel participate in design and implementation of the program.

An adequate knowledge of the overall behavior of a rock mass at a given site is fundamental to the satisfactory design of a rock slope. The be- havior is controlled by a variety of factors, in- cluding rock type, geological structure, stress and ground water conditions. There are essentially three lines of approach that may be used to obtain information on the in-situ rock mass behavior for the purpose of the design of a rock slope: (1) Direct measurements of rock mass properties by means ol laboratory and field tests. (2) Evaluation of rock mass properties from a study of slope failure case histories and sta- tistical information on stable and unstable natural rock slopes. (3) Evaluation of in-situ behavior of rock mass by using a physical or mathematical model technique.

The, principle purpose of applying control to any process is to improve -its profitability. Even when considering the impact of a plant on its surrounding ecology this is still, true, since the sanctions felt most immediately from violations of the regulations are the economic penalties or fines which result. 'Economic performance can be improved within a plant in several ways. Steps can be taken to cut the cost or quantity of resources (power, water, steam, reagents) consumed per ton of throughput. Alternatively the operation of the plant can be changed so as to increase product yield per ton of throughput. Or the cost of labor and plant overhead per ton of product can be reduced by raising the total 'throughput, assuming-that the increased amount of product can be sold for the same unit price. In designing a program to improve plant performance, all three routes should be borne in mind. To maximize the return on investment over a longer period, it is also desirable to set up a comprehensive plan of improvement, equipment being specified at each step in the implementation so as to ensure that it fits in with later requirements later implementation being either by means of modular additions or by having the necessary interfaces built into the original equipment. It is much cheaper in the long run to buy features which have been factory-installed, than to have to make provision for their later addition in the field. This paper examines some ways of improving plant performance by the application of various process control techniques using both analog and digital con¬trol equipment. A general philosophy of application is suggested and specific examples described.

The manganese removal from aqueous solution containing high Mn2+ concentration by adsorption and oxidation was studied using manganese oxide particles as the adsorbent. The operating parameters including pH, flow rate, initial manganese concentrations, and oxidant dosage affect the performance of Mn2+ removal were evaluated in a laboratory packed column. In the multi-column adsorption tests, each additional column doubled the time for complete manganese removal. No further decrease of pH was also observed once it was lowered to pH 4.5 to 5. This finding implied the possibility of complete high manganese removal without further pH adjustment during adsorption. Oxidation of Mn2+ by dissolved oxygen was found to be insignificant for manganese removal for high Mn2+ concentration. Adsorption was the predominated mechanism involved with manganese removal. Extremely low H+/Mn2+ stoichiometry compared to the reported values was measured. These low values suggested that different adsorption mechanisms such as chemisorption other than H+/Mn2+ ion exchange might play an important role at low pH. This paper presents the quantity and explanation of the results obtained for the mechanism of adsorption and oxidation of high concentration manganese on the manganese ore particles.

If enthusiasm is a requirement, the coordinator of the Total Concept program is a dynamic, exciting leader with a lot of potential to keep the program a vital and progressive effort for many years. Art Meyer is entering his third year as the leader of the Total Concept. He is using his years of experience in the industry to emphasize the basics required for the course, and has also instituted new programs. Meyer began his career, after graduation from CSM as geological engineer in 1950, with St. Joe Lead. He held other responsible positions with Amax and Rocky Mountain Energy. He can answer any questions that may crop up or find the right resource person for those questions. Additions to the 18-year-old curriculum instituted since Meyer became coordinator are the study of industrial minerals and strategic minerals. The industrial minerals portion of the course includes visits to a major sand and gravel operation, in addition to lectures on the subject. Much of the strategic minerals requires study and lectures, since Colorado is not a big production state in these commodities. How does the director arrive at new additions or deletions to the program? "It's very simple," he says. "We listen to questions posed by the students, recommendations by industry people who know what is important, and feed-back from course alumni." Alumni feedback from this course has been extremely gratifying, according to Meyer. Other ideas are constantly surfacing, ideas that will be implemented as time and resources permit. One of the most gratifying results of the Total Concept program from an alumnus was the development of a complete teacher and student package by John Christiansen, a teacher at Cherry Creek High School near Denver. The course so excited Christiansen that he envi¬sioned an energy and minerals course to fill a perceived gap in science education on the high school level. The draft package was so attractive that it was sponsored and the publication costs guaranteed by the Society of Mining Engineers. Today, under the leadership of the Mineral Information Institute, the package is in use in several states and has gained enthusiastic acceptance. Other alumni have launched their efforts to broaden the scope of the existing science education by instituting courses or special seminars. One recent alumnus, Dick Will, class of 1984, who was sponsored by the Denver Mining Club, is conducting a science seminar based on his experiences with the Total Concept program. Meyer will be speaking at this seminar, as well as other industry speakers from the SME GEM Committee Speaker's Bureau. Jane Dianich, another alumna, brought her students at Kent Country Day school, also near Denver, into the mainstream of resource education by taking them on abbreviated field trips similar to those she experienced while in the program. She also has been a vocal supporter of the organization and available to speak to other teachers on the value of the experience. George Wright, of the Lake School and a second sponsoree of the Denver Mining Club, admits he came into the program because the six credit hours given toward his continuing education requirement were attractive. He then stayed on to become an ardent advocate of the mining industry. In his own words, "I'm a convert." Wright has developed a slide presentation and has lectured to teachers and students as well as presenting his views to the Denver Mining Club. He has also indicated a willingness to participate with other organizations who need speakers. The value of these speakers and teachers is obvious, according to Meyer. "They represent a respected segment of the public and are not too `tainted' by association with an industry that is too often under criticism from various groups. They represent, in effect, a citizen's advocacy of the industry, which is an invaluable asset to us all." One of Meyer's concerns about the program is that the out-of-state student rate attendance is declining. He is hoping that more AIME sections around the country will become involved in the scholarship program of the Total Concept. Total cost is about $1200 per student. "The rewards to their sections could be tremendous, with the same kind of participation we get here with speakers, citizen advocates, and interested persons," he said. Teachers say that the course improves their teaching and knowledge in a number of subjects including biology, history, economics, career planning, environmental data, science, math, geography, physics, and chemistry. The recent interest in hazardous waste management has sharpened the desire to learn more about this. And Meyer foresees another segment of the course to emphasize this subject. "One of the most valuable resources we have is the field trip program. The course would probably be meaningless without this opportunity to get out into the field where these folks can see what actually happens. George Wright, for example, was amazed at the very small amount of area actually involved in the mining operation - something contrary to what he had heard in the past." The 45 students are taken by van on eight trips, one each week, and the long trip to Colorado's Western Slope. During this long adventure, the students visit underground mines, including CSM's Edgar, open-cut and underground coal mines, precious metals mines, and oil shale properties. They also have opportunities to meet with mine personnel at each of these stops. These field trips fill another function. Living together and exchanging ideas helps the teachers come up with new concepts for the classroom work - expanding their horizons. "As long as we have a mining industry, this effort will continue to grow," Meyer said, "and will fulfill a need within the public education and public relations area of the industry. We need the support. I have dozens of comments from teachers who attest to the value of this program. They understand. The mining industry must continue to do its part."

"Gob ventilation boreholes (GVBs) are widely used in underground coal mines for longwall gob degasification purposes. GVBs are often drilled within 10 to 30 m above the top of the coal bed into the fractured zone, completed with 20 cm (8 in.) diameter casing and 60 m of slotted pipe at the bottom. The purpose of this completion strategy is to create a pressure sink to capture the emissions before they can enter into the underground workplace. For GVBs to work effectively, they must be drilled close enough to the working areas to capture methane from the fractured zone while the setting depth must be kept above the caved zone to minimize the amount of ventilation air that is drawn into the GVBs. Well completion parameters are important for creating safe working conditions. In this paper, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) studies will be presented to analyze the effect of different practices for GVBs completion parameters for methane extraction, formation of explosive gas zones in the gob and methane concentrations at the longwall face and tailgate. Authors have identified the optimum completion parameters for GVBs, which can maximize the benefit and minimize fire and explosion risk. INTRODUCTION Coal mines may be considered gassy based on the presence of CH4. Gas from the mined coalbed or from rider seams above or below the mined coalbed can migrate into the gob and then potentially move towards the working areas. In longwall coal mines with high methane emissions, sufficient ventilation and additional methane control measures are usually required to reduce the methane concentration in working areas to below statutory levels. Several techniques or combinations of techniques are available to control the methane hazard. These may include mine face ventilation to dilute methane, coal bed degasification, nitrogen injection into the gob to render a methane atmosphere inert and the use of gob ventilation boreholes (GVBs). Longwall face ventilation and dilution alone can only handle methane emissions up to a certain amount. When methane emissions exceed the face ventilation capacity, additional control measures are required. Drilling horizontal or vertical methane drainage holes into the coal seams as well as gob ventilation boreholes from the surface into the gob area to extract methane are common practices. GVBs are usually drilled from the surface above the longwall panel ahead of mining. When the face moves outby the GVBs and the gob begins to form, methane production starts from the boreholes. It is important to control the performance of GVBs to maintain a safe working environment in the mine. The performance of GVBs depends on multiple factors, including borehole location, length and diameter of slotted casing, setting depth of casing above the coal seam being mined, wellhead vacuum pressure, and permeability of caved-fractured zones."

Physicochemical properties of copper electrolytes are a strong fundamental consideration in electrodeposition processes during electro-purification and recovery of copper. Their influence extends to mass transfer as well as energy consumption during the electrodeposition process. In this study, the influence of electrolyte composition on electrolyte physicochemical properties was investigated to review the existing literature data. This review of data is considered necessary as more and more electrowinning models are being developed for process prediction and optimisation and a need of such data is required for accurate prediction of physicochemical properties. The major components of importance to the formation of smooth high-quality and high-purity copper cathodes at optimum current efficiency are considered the species in solution. These include Cu ions, Fe ions (major impurity), H2SO4, and a smoothing agent additive. A 5-factor, 2- and 3-level experimental design was employed to determine the effect of copper (35 and 45 g/l), sulphuric acid (160 and 180 g/l), iron (1, 3, and 6 g/l), polyacrylamide additive (2, 5, and 10 mg/ l), and temperature (45 and 55 °C) on electrolyte density, conductivity, and the diffusion coefficient in synthetic copper electrowinning electrolytes. The major species in a copper electrowinning electrolyte are found to be the most relevant for prediction of physicochemical properties. These results indicate that relatively simple empirical models are sufficient for modelling of the electrolyte domain in electrowinning, without the need for the generation of vast amounts of complex experimental data.

The U.S. Geological Survey, in support of underground testing of nuclear explosives, has developed a technique (Dudley, 1910) to predict the inflow of ground water to large underground chambers that are cylindrical in shape. By treating the chamber as a large-diameter well pumped at constant drawdown, the nonsteady discharge can be computed by the method of Hantush (1961) for analyzing flowing wells under leaky artesian conditions. In mining applications, whether for mineral recovery or for nuclear testing, the most serious departure from the conditions of Hantush's model results from the gradual enlargement of the opening under drained conditions. Inherent in the analytical technique is that the "well" is fully completed at the time that dewatering begins. Because safety is the prime concern, however, initial pumping systems or personnel evacuation procedures must be designed to handle the greatest conceivable inflow. DEFINITIONS Because somewhat different meanings are attached to similar words in different technical fields, the U.S. Geological Survey definitions (Lohman, 1970) of several hydrologic terms used in this report are given below. An aquifer is a formation, group of formations, or part of a formation that contains sufficient saturated permeable material to yield significant quantities of water to wells, and springs. A confining bed is a body of material lying stratigraphically adjacent to one or more aquifers and having a hydraulic conductivity distinctly lower than that of the aquifer. The total head (dimensions L) of a liquid at a given point is the sum of three components: (1) elevation head, he, which is equal to the elevation of the point above a datum; (2) pressure head, hp, which is the height of a column of static water that can be supported by the static pressure at the point; and (3) velocity head, hv, which is the height the kinetic energy of the liquid is

The tonnage produced on mechanized automated retreating longwall faces in the United States is growing rapidly. This time last year some 14 faces were operating, and in addition to that, three were known to be down looking towards revision or repairs before being placed back in service. These, it is believed, are now in service. It is estimated at the present time, therefore, that somewhere between 20 and 25 faces are being operated in the country. A survey made last year by the School of Mines, West Virginia University, indicated that longwall mining in general has been beset with a great many problems, some more serious than others. The problems that we propose to discuss here are those pertaining to roof and floor trouble in the tailgates. Longwalls are operating in this country at the present time under an overburden ranging from 200 feet to nearly 3000 feet. Main and tailgate entries are operating in panels of up to five each, with the width of the pillars between these entries varying from 20 to 50 feet. Face lengths are running from 270 feet to 670; actually a face 800 feet long should be possible. The most economical face is often spoken of as being around 450 feet.
