"Pareto analysis was used to investigate the failures database of a Hitachi EX1900 hydraulic shovel over one year of continuous operation. The hydraulic system and hydraulic links, hoses and piping were identified as the most critical system and subsystem, respectively. A three-parameter gamma distribution function was identified as the best fit for a probabilistic modeling of the time between failures (TBFs). This distribution was used in a Monte Carlo reliability analysis of the hydraulic system. Autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA), within the context of a time series analysis of the TBFs, was proposed as a viable alternative to the traditional technique of distribution fitting. The mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) metric was used to compare the two models. The MAPE value that resulted from the ARIMA was 66 percent smaller than that from the traditional technique in predicting the TBFs.Resumen ¦ Se usó análisis Pareto para investigar la base de datos de fallas de una pala hidráulica Hitachi EX1900 durante un periodo de un año de operación continua. The South African deep-level mining industry is characterised by high operating costs and narrowing profit margins. Compressed air is commonly the largest consumer of energy in these mines, and any inefficiencies reduce profitability. Various methods aiming to optimise the compressed air networks have been implemented without an ideal economic dispatch strategy due to the lack of compressed air storage. In this study, a genetic algorithm was developed to evaluate the financial benefit of converting underground haulage to act as an air receiver (compressed air storage). By converting inactive haulage of 1.17 km in length into a volumetric air receiver, an annual monetary benefit of R2.5 million ($163 200) can be achieved, with a payback period of fewer than eight months. However, implementing the ideal size air receiver would result in an annual monetary benefit of R7.67 million ($500 700).

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has been evaluating longwall mining-induced strata fractures and their impacts on casing stability of Marcellus shale gas wells located in longwall pillars. To understand the extent of overburden fractures after longwall mining, NIOSH researchers drilled a post-mining corehole into the fractured strata above the Pittsburgh coal seam longwall gob. Knowing the extent of the fracture zone height will help gas operators minimize the hazards of drilling into longwall gobs. The core was retrieved from the surface down to the top of the gob void. Various fractures were encountered varying from 35 to 64°, depending on lithologic type and relative closeness to the gob. The longwall panel dimension was 457-m wide and 3657-m long, in which the total fracture zone height was found to be at 141 m and the hydraulic connected fracture zone at 87.7 m above the top of the Pittsburgh seam. In addition to core drilling through the gob, FLAC3D modeling was also used to simulate the formation of fracture zone and the orientations of longwall-induced fractures. This study provides much-needed evidence on the fracture zone of Pittsburgh seam longwall gobs to help gas operators avoid potential hazards associated with drilling through highly fractured zones in longwall gobs.

Underground mine fires remain a concern for mine operators, posing a health and safety risk to mineworkers. In the last decade, the number of mine fires has decreased significantly. However, dealing with an unknown fire in underground mines can be a challenging task, which could lead to a hazardous condition for miners during an evacuation and rescue operation. A timely detection of a mine fire and monitoring its characteristics—namely, size and location—are of great importance in reducing the risk of mine fire injuries. A new, improved fire location algorithm has been developed and integrated into an atmospheric monitoring system (AMS) program by researchers from the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). This paper describes the new fire location model and presents the results of verification fire tests conducted at the Safety Research Coal Mine (SRCM) facility of the Pittsburgh Mining Research Division (PMRD) using the collected AMS data. NIOSH is endeavoring to develop workplace solutions to improve the detection of and reduce the risk of hazardous conditions in mines. The results demonstrate successful application of the improved fire location model and provide a useful tool for solving the problem of unknown fire location and reducing the risk of hazardous conditions.

To maintain flexibility and ductility of tunnels crossing active faults, various mitigation measures are being utilized depending on fault offset movements and seismic design criteria. Examples of those approaches are simple bell and spigot joint, articulated joint, and complex deformable longitudinal bolt and spring joint system with seismic isolation washer. This paper presents a summary of tunnel fault crossing mitigation approaches and design considerations using previous relevant experiences in California as well as case histories from Japan, Taiwan, Turkey, Greece, and Italy found in literatures. Comparisons are made between large and small diameter tunnels, transportation, and utility tunnels, as well as bored, mined and cut-and-cover tunnels. Recent innovations, such as Japanese and Italian techniques, for tunnels crossing active faults are also discussed.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the index-mechanical properties of igneous rocks by using the electrical resistivity method. Electrical resistivity, index (P-wave velocity, dry density, and porosity), and uniaxial compressive strength values of 48 different igneous rock samples were measured in the laboratory. Simple regression analysis was performed between index-mechanical properties and electrical resistivity values. Strong exponential and logarithmic correlations were found between electrical resistivity and the index-mechanical properties of the igneous rock samples.

The dressing of Bolivian tin ores has been done up to the present by classical. gravity methods, taking advantage of the high specific gravity of cassiterite compared with that of the accompanying gangue. For this purpose, jigs and shaking tables are used in the treatment of the various size fractions in which the ore is classified. Bolivian ores are mainly of the vein type and, to obtain a reasonable separation, crushing and several stages of grinding are necessary during the process to substantially liberate the cassiterite from the gangue. Gravity processes for cassiterite are effective for sizes down to 200 mesh. Below this size the efficiency of the gravity methods falls off very rapidly with increasing fineness of the mineral grains. The conventional treatment for this material is desliming followed by tabling on shaking tables various other types of machines have been designed for the gravity treatment of these fine particles but they have had limited success. Bolivian ores contain an appreciable amount of minus 200 mesh material constituted by "primary fines" caning from the mine itself, and "secondary fines" originated during the crushing and grinding necessary for liberation of the difficulty in the treatment of these fine particles is one of the causes why the recovery of tin in concentrates is only of around 50% in the mines owned by Corporacidn Minera de Bolivia, the State owned enterprise. Several discrete-event simulation models have been developed for designing the conveying system capacities of underground coal mines. Most of these models require the use of a step-function approach to mimic the loading process at each conveyor loading point. Over the years, practitioners have generally employed one of three versions of the step-function approach. An important issue is how these three versions compare to each other in terms of simulated capacity requirements for belt conveyors. Another is-sue is how they compare to peak capacity design. This paper addresses these issues by statistically and quantitatively comparing their simulation results. The consequences and problems associated with using each version are also discussed and summarized.

Three transportation systems in surface coal mines: 1-Truck Haulage, 2-Belt Conveying, and 3-Coarse-Coal Slurry Transportation are compared from the operations and cost point of Views. Computerized design and cost models were developed and cost data banks were compiled for each system. These models can be used to evaluate transportation systems and layouts that are practiced in most of the U.S. surface coal mines. A typical midwestern area strip mine was considered for illustration purposes. Sensitivity analysis on critical parameters such as production rate, transportation, distance, etc. was conducted and the outcomes are presented.

Tunnels and underground infrastructures assets, like all assets, deteriorate with time. At some point, they reach the end of their useful life. Therefore, frequent inspections, higher levels of maintenance, and rehabilitation are needed to address loss of life and safety concerns. The repair cost of tunnels will increase if maintenance of tunnels is not satisfactory and timely. Historically, tunnel inspections have primarily relied on visual and manual procedures. Due to their time-consuming nature and susceptibility to human error, there is a demand for alternative automated techniques that can enhance efficiency and reliability in tunnel inspection. By utilizing a tunnel scanning system, such as laser scanner and thermography, or photogrammetry system, tunnel inspection cost, time, and personnel can be reduced. The goal of this study is to utilize deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for automated identification of defects in tunnel lining inspection. This paper presents a framework to classify two types of defects in tunnel lining (water leakages and cracks) using CNNs. The CNNs were trained and tested using 4,608 images. The Precision, Recall, and F1 Score were each 99.6%, confirming the viability of this approach in the automated defect identification in tunnel lining.

Sintering as applied to agglomeration of ferrous fines has shown little growth in the United States in recent years. The general concensus was that most of the existing facilities would remain in production at a reduced tonnage to dispose of and recover solid waste from steel plants. Further growth for ferrous sintering technology was not in sight in the United States and in the early sixties expansion came to a virtual standstill, however, we witnessed a rapid emergence of a tremendous pelletizing industry. On other continents, due to different raw materials supply and capital structure, sintering technology continued to grow, with a more cautious development of pelletizing installations. In the U.S. the diminishing supply of good quality, high grade coarse ore resulted in eventual disappearance of high grade ore fines for sintering. The finely divided concentrates produced from lower grade ores were not amenable to this type of agglomeration, but were more suitable for pelletizing. Furthermore, pellets seemed to possess all the features of an ideal blast furnace feed; namely pellets are free flowing, uniform in size, strong, with extremely uniform chemical composition and good reducibility. Importance and demand for such well stabilized furnace feed further increased as size of newly installed blast furnaces continued to grow. The in- creasing demand for a uniform, stabilized burden coincided with the effort to produce a fully beneficiated burden for smelting, thus reverting the blast furnace to its primary function of smelting.

There is a natural resistance to change in any form. When it comes to implementing a game-changing technology like autonomous haulage on an operating mine site, the resistance can at times appear insurmountable. Whether based on real information or misguided preconceptions, it?s essential that we don?t underestimate the effort it will take to overcome this resistance, while clearly recognizing when it?s worth the effort. These realizations did not happen overnight for sites where autonomous haulage has been implemented. Nor did they happen overnight for manufacturers of autonomous mining equipment. Caterpillar, for example, began building toward autonomy more than 30 years ago and had a truck operating in the mid-1990s. Lessons learned during those early years led to the realization that there was much more to be learned ? not just about the machines themselves, but about the systems and knowledge that must be in place for a successful implementation. Working closely with customers, initiating real-life demonstrations on mine sites, having discussions with regulatory agencies and other stakeholders ? these and many other activities were necessary before autonomy could be fully and successfully launched. After decades of effort, Caterpillar?s first official commercial autonomous mine site went to work in 2011 in Farmington, NM.

"Discrete event simulation is a stochastic mathematical modeling tool with applications in queuing systems. Many mining operations, both surface and underground, can be simulated in the context of queuing theory , for example open pit loading and haulage operation, underground level and vertical transportation, and mineral processing circuits. A computer simulation model of the operation is an invaluable tool to study both the system’s dynamics and conducting sensitivity analysis on different effective elements on system performance. In this paper, merits of discrete event simulation in decision making in mining engineering is discussed. Moreover, a stochastic simulation framework for selection and sizing of shovels and dump trucks in surface mining is presented to elaborate one example for applicability of the method in mining operations. INTRODUCTION Mathematical modeling is a valuable tool in design, optimization, and decision making in both surface and underground mining operations. Several researchers have tried to study different aspects of mining operations using a wide range of mathematical techniques such as linear programming[1], analytical hierarchy process [2], non-linear programming[3], genetic algorithms[4-5] ,mixed integer programming [6], machine repair model[7], queuing theory [8], and conventional spreadsheet calculations based on experience and engineering judgments. There are different uncertainties in typical mining operations (e.g. material loading and haulage, drilling, and blasting). For example, in a truck-shovel operation, different governing activities such as loading, haulage, and dumping cycles are stochastic variables. Moreover, analytical modeling of a large truck-shovel operation is very complicated. Thus, application of analytical and/or deterministic techniques cannot guarantee a solution for different problems that are encountered in daily mining operations. Discrete-event system simulation (DES) is a modeling method for such time discrete and probabilistic phenomena [9]. DES has been employed by different researchers in mining engineering through available software and languages such as GPSS, SIMAN- ARENA, and SLAM [10-14]. Most of the studies so far, tried to evaluate some “what-if” scenarios, to understand the possible effects of changing different input variables on overall mine economics. For instance, Baffi and Ataeepur (1996) used Arena to simulate a truck-shovel operation [10]. Also, Sturgul has conducted extensive studies in the application of DES in the mining engineering field [15- 17]. A very good background review of application of this technique in the industry can be found in [15-16]. Previous studies have shown that, different approaches including deterministic, stochastic, and experimental methodologies result in considerable differences in outputs [18]. These techniques lead to different solutions, regardless of the quality of technique/software itself or knowledge of the modeling team. Hence, the first step is to develop a comprehensive simulation framework to obtain nearly the same optimal results for the same input variables, regardless of the employed technique."

Road tunnels in recent infrastructure projects in Sydney, Australia, are designed to have a fire resistance level of either a 4-hour cellulosic fire or a 2-hour hydrocarbon fire. Where permanent ground support for tunnels consists of systematic rock bolts and relatively thin layer of shotcrete, it is important to ensure that during and after the fire event the ground support is designed/predicted not to pose risks to the tunnel occupant. The global behavior of the ground support can be predicted using finite element analysis, and its resistance is derived with consideration of the material strength degradation due to the elevated temperature.

Hong Kong is an intensively developed region and has the highest vehicle densities in the world. In 2000 there were 6.6 million people and 580,000 vehicles using 1,890 km of road covering the 1084 km 2 territory. The high vehicle and population densities together with the difficult terrain have seen road tunnels emerge as key components both in the current and future road transportation network. Currently there are eleven operating highway tunnels in Hong Kong, seven government owned and the remaining four “build, operate and transfer” franchises, see Figure 1. The very first tunnel was the dual two Lions Rock Tunnel completed in 1967and the latest the dual 3 lane Tai Lam Tunnel opened in mid 1998. Figure 2 shows the alignment and statistics for all 11 Hong Kong tunnels. Looking ahead, Hong Kong has embarked on the study and design of the next generation of major highways and as many as a further seven tunnels are currently under feasibility study or detailed design. This seems an opportune year to produce a broad appreciation of the fire strategy, life safety and ventilation practices in Hong Kong not only for the existing tunnels but the new standards and requirements for the next generation of Hong Kong tunnels. This paper provides an overview of the fire strategy, life safety and ventilation of Hong Kong’s existing and planned tunnels. The paper pays particular attention to the areas where the unique conditions and requirements in Hong Kong impacts on tunnel and systems design and the solutions adopted to overcome these challenges.

Copper electrowinning operations have dramatically improved their ability to produce high quality copper at low costs over the past several decades. Even so, some fundamental knowledge is still lacking that could allow operations to run even more efficiently. For example, a rule of thumb exists that estimates a current efficiency loss of 2-3% per gram per liter of iron in the electrolyte. While several laboratory studies have been performed that demonstrate this rule of thumb is likely true, no definitive relationship exists. In this paper, the first steps in developing a definitive relationship are presented. The effective diffusivity of ferric ions in synthetic copper electrowinning solutions was measured using chronoamperometry and the Cottrell equation. The effective diffusivity of ferric ion was determined as a function of electrolyte concentration and temperature. Synthetic electrolytes were then used in laboratory-scaled copper electrowinning experiments, where relationships between current efficiency and solution composition were found to exist under stagnant conditions. The Rondout Bypass Tunnel in New York has two access shafts. The upper sections of the shafts are lined with steel pipe to resist a substantial net internal water head . Initial design included a ¾-inch-thick cement mortar lining (CML) for all three components. Because of concerns with CML application on large-diameter pipes, the protective lining was redesigned for shotcrete application. This paper discusses the details of that design, mock-ups, and shotcrete application.

[A column float beneficiation plant using 9, 8.5 foot diameter, cells was constructed by the Simplot Company and the Smoky Canyon Facility in the fall of 1986 and has been in operation since May of 1987. The float beneficiation process was developed jointly by the Simplot Company and the Bureau of Mines (Salt Lake City, Utah) which incorporates the Bureau's bubble generator design and chemistry system based around the reverse float technology, (Albany Bureau of Mines, Application of Carbonate-Silica Flotation Techniques to Western Phosphate Materials, Rule, Dallenbach , Larsen, RI8728, 1982) . This chemistry has been modified by Simplot in both patented and unpatented improvements. The objective of the beneficiation process was to reducethe A1203 content in the overall pipeline concentrate by 0.2 wt z. Therefore, a process stream was identified in the mill circuit which provided an opportunity to isolate and treat 1100 tons per day of poor quality phosphate concentrates The process allows recovery of approximately 15% of the mill concentrates, otherwise unsuitable for fertilizer production. The alternative would have been to waste this ore. Wasting would have resulted in considerable ore loss, increased mining costs and required additional products grinding. ]

"The Soudan Mine was Minnesota’s first iron mine, operating from 1882 to 1962. The mine was donated to the State of Minnesota in 1963 and became a state park in 1965. The mine discharge contains elevated copper and cobalt concentrations and has been treated with an ion-exchange-resin-based system since 2009. The system includes flow equalization tanks, bag and cartridge filters, a carbon tank and two commercial ion exchange tanks. Although effective, the system’s high cost, inefficient removal of suspended material and substantial maintenance have been ongoing and troublesome issues.In November 2012, we initiated a pilot test using a peat-based sorption media. This media is produced from raw reed-sedge peat through a patented, low-temperature carbonization process that produces a hardened granular sorption material. The granules are uniform, have high hydraulic conductivity and maintain the high metal affinity of natural peat.Mine water was pumped through the peat-based sorption media without any pretreatment. Copper input concentrations typically ranged from 30 to 60 µg/L but increased to a high of 364 µg/L in the summer of 2013. Since startup, more than 60 million L (16 million gal or 32,000 bed volumes) have been treated, with average removal rates of 75 percent for particulate copper and 60 percent for dissolved copper. Backwash is required at about 4,000 bed volumes, but with a combination of air sparging and high-flow backwash, the suspended material is removedfrom the media.One tank of the peat-based sorption media was found to remove copper similarly to the first four components of the existing system. By reducing size and complexity, reductions in operation and maintenance costs are possible. A comparison of the estimated costs indicate that replacing the four initial components with the single media tank has the potential to reduce annual operating costs by more than half from around $163,000 to $70,000."
