A major contribution to the art of blasting was made at the Cleveland- Cliffs Iron Company?s Hawkins Mine in Cashwauk, Minnesota during April of 1956. It was here that the first experiments with fertilizer grade ammonium nitrate were conducted-experiments which led to the development of the ammonium nitrate and fuel oil method of blasting which has been eagerly adopted by open pit and quarry operators throughout the United States. While this new blasting agent was a more or less natural outgrowth of the Akremite Process devised by Maumee Colleries of Terre Haute, Indiana; no one, to our knowledge, had used this particular combination of ingredients prior to this time. Certainly this was a "break-through" as far as the Lake Superior District was concerned. Akremite consists of a mechanical mixture of grained ammonium nitrate and a solid carbonaceous material packed in a plastic bag. At the time of its introduction to the Mesaba Range, Akremite sold for 10.5 cents a pound as compared to the 18 cent powder previously used in both wet and dry large hole blasting. The discovery of this agent was indeed a remarkable achievement, one that afforded a substantial reduction in blasting costs. However, Akremite proved to be only an intermediate step in the evolution of our present low cost explosives. Cleveland-Cliffs utilized prilled ammonium nitrate and fuel oil and then eliminated the mixing and packaging plant entirely by combining the two raw materials in the field at the drill hole collar or in the hole itself. Thus we have approached the ultimate in simplicity, for the blaster and his helper now manufacture their own explosives not only as they are needed but where they are needed, and at a cost of under 4 cents a pound. This two-man crew may charge and explode as much as 8 tons of ammonium nitrate in an eight-hour shift and in so doing break some 65,000 tons of ore.

A novel system for the depression of pyrite and the ash-forming minerals has been developed. A metal ion, including but not restricted to Fe+2, is added to form a hydroxide coating on the pyrite or ash-forming mineral. A polymeric depressant is then added to attach to this re-surfaced mineral. Nearly 200 flotation tests with a 11 different coals indicate the effectiveness of this system. Many of the important process variables such as the coal source, frother-collector system, grind size and procedure, pH, metal ion, and depressant type and concentration have been studied.

How to connect an effluent conveyance tunnel to riser shaft and diffuser arms of an outfall system is dictated by the ground conditions, which ideally include rock or soil strata of low permeability. Where such favorable conditions are beyond reach, both the complexity of designing and the risk of constructing this crucial system connection increase disproportionally. This paper describes the considerations that went into the approach of connecting a 5-m-diameter TBM drive with the in-river riser shaft of the Annacis Island WWTP New Outfall System in the highly permeable Fraser River sands at hydrostatic pressures exceeding 3 bar.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is conducting research to enhance methane control and mine ventilation practices at coal mines, as a method to mitigate hazardous work conditions. NIOSH researchers conducted case studies to investigate the effectiveness of existing systems and improve performance to decrease the potential for unplanned or excessive methane emissions. At one mine, drainage was influenced by hydrofracking inefficiencies where two of the six wells showed good frack development. Methane content was variable, from 300 ft3/t to 600 ft3/t. This paper also summarizes overburden movement during undermining and the estimated quantities of gas transported to the mine using FLAC3D and CFD modeling. The findings from this research effort highlight considerations based on specific mine conditions that may also be applicable to most longwall mines utilizing methane control systems.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted field tests to evaluate the effectiveness of a wet head continuous mining machine for reducing dust exposure for continuous miner operators. Wet head technology delivers water via sprays to the continuous miner?s cutter head as opposed to traditional standard sprays located on the boom and body of the mining machine. The sprays, positioned directly behind each bit on the cutterhead, deliver water at the point of attack, serving to cool the bits during mining to reduce the potential for frictional ignitions. The sprays also flood the coal with water to potentially suppress dust generation. Dust surveys were conducted at several mines to evaluate the wet head?s effectiveness to control respirable dust exposure at the continuous miner operator location and in the immediate return. Results show that the wet head miner generally improved air quality at both sampling locations to varying degrees in some, but not all, mines when compared to a continuous miner with a standard spray system.

The mining industry has made strides in planning for operations to be safe for the workforce and public, to protect the natural environment, and to maximize value for shareholders. However, many of the techniques used to accomplish these goals are based on estimated models of mineral content, production efficiency, and economic performance. The industry has begun to recognize the need for understanding the uncertainty in these models, how it affects their decisions, and what the potential impacts are for each project. The challenge has become how technical professionals can effectively communicate the impact of this uncertainty and its importance to both technical and non-technical audiences. This paper presents mining engineers (and other technical professionals) with traditional and modern principles of data visualization and technical communication that can assist with communicating the effects of uncertainty in the mine planning process.

ZJ 201 (modified starch) is a non-toxic, odorless, and biodegradable polymeric depressant, which selectively depressed galena in batch flotation tests while chalcopyrite was not significantly affected. In a plant trial, copper-lead separation was successful for the first time without using dichromate. Moreover, the plant process could be changed to sequential Cu-Pb flotation using ZJ 201 for higher grade lead concentrate. A copper concentrate was obtained with a Cu grade of 24.91% and a Pb grade of 5.11%, which recovered 76.6% of the copper from the original ore; a lead concentrate was also obtained with a Pb grade of 21.90% and a Cu grade of 5.31%, which recovered 52.6% of the lead. In addition to the effective copper-lead separation observed in the plant trial, another improvement observed is that gold was recovered mostly in copper concentrate, which could be sold for higher prices. Au grade reached 230.64 g/t, and its recovery reached 65.8% in the copper concentrate. Au grade in lead concentrate was only 18.90 g/t.

The main thrust of this paper covers the design, installation techniques and experience associated with the installation of eleven 1.5 m (4'-11") and three 2.87 m (9'-5") diameter shafts in 15 to 23 meters (50 to 75 ft) of water over 1.6 Km (a mile) out in the Atlantic Ocean. The approach implemented, permits the use of pre-fabricated shaft linings and incorporates a safe dry-tap method for connecting the offshore shafts to tunnels driven blind from deep land shafts over 4.8 Km (3 miles) away. This tunnel-shaft system is a unique venture employed at the Seabrook Nuclear Power Station to meet plant cooling water requirements.

In 1852, six barrels of iron ore were loaded aboard the steamer Baltimore at Marquette, MI, after a trip by mule wagon from the nearby Cleveland Iron Mining Co. Shipped to Sault Ste. Marie, they were portaged around rapids and reloaded onto another ship for the final journey to the steel mills of Cleveland. In 1855, the same company-the predecessor of Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co.-chartered the brigantine Columbia to carry the first iron-ore cargo through the newly opened Soo locks. In 1981, about 2,190 iron-ore shipments in the form of taconite pellets were transported by water from US Great Lakes-ports. The total volume during the 284-day shipping season was 63 Mt (62 million It). Counting Canadian ship¬ments, almost 76 Mt (75 million It) of iron ore were moved on the lakes last year. The five Great Lakes-Superior, Huron, Michigan, Erie, and Ontario-contain 20% of the world's fresh water. The area surrounding the lakes has 26% of the nation's populations, 47% of its steel production, and over 80% of the raw materials required to make steel. That figure includes 71% of the country's iron ore and 40% of its limestone. Only the availability of low-cost water transportation of raw materials has kept the heartland steel producers competitive. Iron ore shipped on the lakes originates in the Lake Superior district's Mesabi and Marquette iron ranges. Major mines and their principal partners are Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co.'s Empire, Republic, and Tilden; Armco and Republic's Reserve Mining Co.; Oglebay Norton Co.'s Eveleth; Hanna Mining Co.'s National and Butler; Inland Steel Co.'s Minorca; Pickands Mather & Co.'s Erie and Hibbing, the latter operated in conjunction with Bethlehem Steel Corp.; and US Steel Corp.'s Minntac. Pelletized ore products at these facilities is shipped through seven principal ports on the upper lakes: Duluth, Two Harbors, Silver Bay, and Taconite Harbor, MN; Superior, WI, and Marquette, MI, on Lake Superior; and Escanaba, MI, on Lake Michigan. In 1981, tonnage volumes ranged from 13.3 Mt (13.1 million It) shipped from Duluth, to Marquette's total of 5.4 Mt (5.3 million It). The ore docks, with two exceptions, are operated by railroads, most of which are owned by mining companies. Table 1 illustrates US iron-ore shipments in 1981. In the lower lakes, ore is discharged at dock facilities close to the great steel-producing centers of Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, and Buffalo. Between the mines and mills, lakes and connecting waterways form one of the country's most effective transportation systems. Each year, vessels on the Great Lakes transport about 181 Mt (200 million st) of bulk industrial and agricultural materials-a greater quantity at a lower cost than can be achieved by any other transportation mode. Before we can attempt to answer the question of what can be expected from coal research, let us examine why research is done in other fields and what others expect for the money they spend on research and development. Up to 1900 almost all organized research was carried out at universities. Most of the support came from the university, and by present standards the amount of research was extremely small. The motivation for university research was basically discovery of new phenomena, with the objective of advancing knowledge. Side by, side with this organized effort was that of individual inventors who were primarily responsible for applying this new-found knowledge to useful purposes. During this period inventors were rarely supported by anyone, and experimentation was carried out either in their spare time or at the expense of earning a living. Men like Edison, I believe, were the first to demonstrate on a large scale that one could systematically apply newly discovered scientific principles to inventions that would serve useful purposes and would return a profit to those engaged in the effort. The tremendous expansion in research therefore began with the realization and demonstration that the scientific discovered could be applied in such a way as to return a' handsome profit to those who invested in it. The motivation of many of the research personnel however, remained the satisfaction associated with new discoveries, The money to support their efforts came from those interested in a return on their investments. Since the First World War and a rapidly accelerating rate since the Second World War another important motive for supporting research has appeared--the needs associated with national defense; this type of research has been supported almost exclusively by the Government.

The mining sector, which has an important place in terms of raw material and energy supply, is referred as a sector with one of the highest fatal accidents in comparison with other sectors. In this century, where occupational health and safety awareness has increased, it is important to review the past accident statistics and to determine the current deficiencies by using the information in the inventory. In this study, the Malmquist total factor productivity index (MPI) has been utilized to investigate the changes in the work accidents occurring in the Western Lignite Corporation (Turkey), where underground and surface production methods are applied, and to determine the measures to be taken. According to the results obtained, both the decrease in production amount and the increase in the number of accidents caused inefficiencies during the period in concern due to the expected 10-year economic life of the mechanized system operating in the underground production panel that came to an end in 2007 and the flooding took place in early 2017. Compared with the underground operations, it has been determined that production can be carried out at the appropriate scale despite the heavy working conditions encountered due to the changing climatic conditions and the progress of production in the surface operations.

To develop strategic and tactical strategies to manage seismic hazard in a safe and economic manner, it is necessary to understand the spatial and temporal distribution of mine wide seismogenic behavior. Global mine-scale numerical stress modelling provides a means to forward predict seismic susceptibility thereby facilitating informed decision making for the development and implementation of strategic and tactical risk mitigation measures. To make forward predictions of hazard susceptibility using global stress models with reasonable confidence, it is necessary to rigorously calibrate numerical stress models to the observed history of ground reaction. This paper demonstrates quantifiable methods for calibrating numerical models and developing probabilistic prediction criterion using seismic data. The appropriate applications of model inputs (including boundary conditions, constitutive models and material parameterization) specific to global mine-scale modelling are also discussed. Lastly, this paper demonstrates how the calibration process adds value not only to informed decision making, but also to the improved understanding of site geomechanical conditions; including enhanced identification of geotechnical domains and mechanical indicators required for seismic mechanism domaining.

Steelmaking industries consume the majority of chromium and manganese ferroalloys to impart several properties in steel and also for other purposes. The quality of ore governs the process kinetics as well as the process economy of the ferroalloy industry. The present study demonstrates the thermal transformation behavior of chromite and manganese ores with varying compositions. Simultaneous thermal analysis (DTA/TG) is employed for such ore samples where the transformation of mineral phases is correlated with the thermogram characteristics and quantified. Phase, microstructure, and compositional analysis results of individual ores corroborated with thermal analysis are in good agreement. Chromite samples are ferruginous with goethite and gibbsite contents, whereas manganese ores vary in composition and also exhibit multiple and/or overlapping transformations.

Phosphate fines (size ≤ 45 μm), from the Red Sea Region, Egypt, were subjected to beneficiation process to recover the phosphorite grains from such fines. The sample is characterized by low P2O5 content (18.78%) associated with gangue minerals such as silica (22.77% SiO2) and carbonate (2.01% MgO) indicating its low grade. Phosphate pre-concentrate was prepared by gravity separation, using Falcon, where 63.37% of the phosphate, with 24.94% P2O5, 1.46% MgO, and 10.54% SiO2, was firstly recovered reducing the mass flow to the subsequent beneficiation process. However, the gravity tailing was the feed for the reverse phosphate flotation using bench scale column flotation where oleic acid was used as a carbonate gangue collector and amylase enzyme as a phosphate depressant. Under the appropriate flotation conditions (0.1% amylase, 5·10−4 mol/dm3 oleic acid, and temp. 30 °C), phospho-concentrate assaying 0.61% MgO, 13.14% SiO2, and 27.85% P2O5 with a P2O5 recovery of 55.45%, was finally obtained without the use of expensive depressants, e.g., phosphoric acid or sodium silicate. A tentative flow sheet for the whole process was postulated.

The Three Rivers Protection & Overflow Reduction Tunnel is part of the Long-Term Control Plan of the City of Fort Wayne, Indiana (USA). The 4.9 m internal diameter tunnel, of length approximately 7.5 km, is excavated at a depth of approximately 40–60 m through carbonate rocks using a slurry TBM. Due to the high hydraulic conductivity of the rock mass and the high in-situ ground water pressure (up to 6.5 bar), the management of the water inflow during the TBM advance and standstills, represents the major challenge for the project. This paper outlines the geotechnical conditions and the hazards related to the large water inflows expected in the pre-excavation phase and discusses the experience gained during the construction of the first 8,224 feet (2,507 m), (first third of the total length of the tunnel).

Manganese ore bodies of Banswara Mn belt were classified into stratiform and stratabound types, based on their mode of occurrence, distribution, and their chemical characters. These ore bodies generally composed of braunite, pyrolusite, cryptomelane/ psilomelane, wad, etc. The stratiform-type Mn ore bodies are conformable with the associated host rocks (Mn phyllite, etc.) and occurred in the form of layers, bands, etc., which are variable in their shape and size. These ore bodies are also strongly folded with the enclosing host rocks. The others, which are stratabound-type Mn ore bodies, also showed an intimate association with the associated host rocks. These types of ore bodies occurred in thin layers, pockets, lenses, stringers, etc. The classified ore bodies are confined with Kalinjara formation of Aravalli Supergroup of Paleoproterozoic age. The ore bodies are structurally controlled and well associated with phyllite, schist, limestone, quartzite, etc. The stratiform-type ore bodies constitute a marginal to low Mn grade and are also characterized by lower Mn content (26.19–39.24%) along with the Mn/Fe ratio of 7.16–12.23, while the stratabound-type Mn ore bodies are rich in Mn (35.92–49.64%) along with the higher Mn/Fe ratio of 14.15–23.97. However, the poor Mn grade along with high siliceous impurities of Banswara Mn deposits is subjected to them for intermittent mining activities in the past and, consequently, did not attract the scientific and industrial community for the evaluation of these resources. Therefore, the authors attempted this study in a scientific and systematic manner (mode of occurrence/distribution and possible methods for evaluation/exploration) to evaluate the potential of existed and newer Mn deposit resources in the Banswara Mn belt. The whole findings would be very much helpful for exploration/ mining geologist along with other concerned, to completely evaluate these Mn deposits in the future.

OPEN STOPING An open stope is an underground cavity from which the initial ore has been mined. Caving of the opening is prevented (at least temporarily) by support from the unmined ore or waste left in the stope, in the form of pillars, and the stope walls (also called ribs or abutments). In addition to this primary support system of open stoping, some secondary support may also be required using rockbolts, reinforcing rods, split pipes, or shotcrete to stabilize the rock surface immediately adjacent to the opening. The secondary reinforcement procedure does not preclude the method classified as open stoping. There are many forms of open-stope mining used to extract the initial material from a mine. Having once established that the mineral and waste rock are competent enough to use an open-stoping method, and assuming that the reserve is not classified as gassy, the Form which the method will take is primarily determined by the dip and thickness of the reserve. How these two factors affect the selection of the open-stope mining is discussed in a later chapter. At this point it will suffice to say that the classification of the open-stopes mining system which follows is based on whether dry' broken materials flows by gravity or whether it must be moved by nongravity methods where energy must be supplied to move the material. Room-and Pillar-Mining Room-and-pillar mining is an open-stoping method where mining progresses in a nearly horizontal or low angle direction by opening multiple stopes or rooms, leaving solid material to act as pillars to support the vertical load. Since the direction of excavation (angle of dip) is below that which would cause the dry material to flow by gravity to a drawpoint or gathering point, the material must be loaded in the room where it was extracted and transported to a point where it will flow, either by gravity or mechanical means, to a central gathering point to be taken out of the mine. This is an important aspect of room-and-pillar mining which differentiates the system from other open-stope mining methods which rely heavily upon gravity to transport ore from where it was broken to a lower elevation, usually through a drawpoint. There are many variations of the method which go by a number of names in local districts: breast stoping, breast-and-bench stoping, board-and-pillar, stall-and-pillar, and panel-and-pillar are all basically open-stope room-and-pillar mining. In some instances detailed stope planning is almost nonexistent; i.e., the operator simply follows the visual pay values, leaves pillars only where necessary, and tries to locate them in the zones of lower value. This method of mining is as old as the beginning of underground mining itself, dating back thousands of years. Early in the history of mining in this country, the term "gophering" was used to describe this method (Peek 1941). The term is appropriate, for it brings to mind the exact results of this type of system-a random and irregular room-and-pillar mine. In other instances where the mineral values are consistent both in physical dimensions and quality, the mine layout can be planned to the last detail, resulting in a uniform room-and-pillar mine. Coal, trona, gilsonite, potash, oil shale, salt, limestone, and sandstone mines can usually follow such a system. Today, most metal mines using a room-and-pillar operation try to mine as regular a pattern as possible but deviation in height, width, thickness, dip, and grade of the ore results in comparable deviation in the mine plan. Variations of the Room-and-pillar System It is necessary to briefly describe some of the many variations of the room-and-pillar system of mining, enabling the reader to fully explore the concepts and become familiar with the terminology used before going on to the details of mine design. Full-Face Slicing: If in the process of opening the rooms the total vertical extent of the mineral values of the particular seam or strata are extracted from the advance of one vertical face, the term used to describe this is full-face slicing. This face is also known as the "breast." There is no mineral of economic value intentionally left either in the floor or the roof (back) to be mined later. To be able to extract the full-face height in one pass, the mining equipment must obviously be designed to reach as high as the back. In an Appalachian coal mine, this may be all of 660.4 mm (26 in.); for a future oil shale property it might be 15.24 m (50 ft). Normally, however, in a majority of mines where the mining face gets over 6.09 to 6.7 m (20 to 22 ft), the tendency is to divide the face into more than one pass. Over this height, it becomes difficult to properly see and remove loose rock from the back with a hand "mining bar." Where the process of taking down loose rock has become mechanized, higher full-face mining can be safely practiced. Most eastern and midwestern coal seams and western uranium, trona, and potash seams in the United States are easily reached in a single face; many limestone, lead, and zinc mines must resort, at least in part, to "multiple-slicing" to remove all the minerals of value. Multiple Slicing (also known as multiple-pass mining): In many cases it is not practical to carry the full vertical height of the mining horizon as a full face. The face is divided into parts known as the breast, bench, and/or brow. The mining conditions in the Meden Rid mine at levels below 1000 m from the Earth's surface are specific and rather severe. The rock temperature is about 40-45°C. The air humidity in the workings is approx. 80-90%. There is a limited capacity for additional fresh air supply. The air supply and distribution systems in the mine are very complicated. The airflow recirculation is due to the existing arrangement of the main fans. Certain accidental phenomena are difficult to predict. All these conditions create possibilities for heat and mass exchange between the rock and the air current thus hampering the control of the ventilation and air-conditioning in the mine workings. The changes in the temperature and humidity in certain characteristic places of the development and extraction workings are predicted. The refrigeration output required and the arrangement of the air coolers are also determined. A new ventilation and air- conditioning scherne has been developed. The new ventilation- cooling designs for levels between 1000-1200 m beneath the Earth's surface are based on the use of portable refrigerating machines having low water flowrate as well as heat-insulating and waterproof materials and methods for preliminary cooling of the orebody within the mining block.

Respirable crystalline silica poses a significant health risk, with the American Lung Association estimating that 2.3 million workers are exposed to silica in the workplace. This includes mine workers as well as those in many other industries. Reducing dust formation is sometimes not possible so other methods to reduce exposure are critical. These methods include the use of surfactants to reduce airborne dust particles. However, it is the proper selection and application of surfactants that leads to reduced dust exposure. A discussion of how surfactants work, especially for silica dust, leads to guidance for surfactant selection followed by a review of technologies for their application.
