It is a pleasure to appear on this program and discuss a subject which is of particular interest to me. In my regular duties as Safety Director of Bituminous Coal Operators' Association, I am called on by member companies to discuss matters affecting face ventilation. As a member of the Joint Industry Safety Committee, as I will later describe, I have a part in processing requests for the use of auxiliary fans for face ventilation. The use of auxiliary fans in bituminous coal mines for this purpose came into rather wide use in the late. '20's when conveyor mining was introduced. In this application, the equipment consisted of a chain conveyor with a face chain conveyor parallel to the face on which the coal was loaded by hand and, in turn, was discharged onto the room conveyor and thence to a loading point on the entry at the mouth of the room. Another method was to use a shaker conveyor with a duckbill which was maneuvered across the face of the room from which the coal was loaded and transported by the shaker to the loading point. In either case the equipment did not readily lend itself to driving crosscuts or breakthroughs with the result that rooms were driven to depths of 250 or 300 feet without adequate means of ventilating the face area with the main split of air. It was, therefore, necessary to use other means of ventilating this area as the rooms were being driven and during retreat work if pillars were extracted. Auxiliary fans of the blowing type were utilized for this purpose. They were of very small capacity using small diameter tubing. By the time the room was driven half way to its projected limit ventilation was very poor or practically nonexistent. To compound the problem the fan was usually set up at the mouth or neck of the room and in many cases the intake air to the fan was the return air from the room. It is small wonder, therefore, that there is on record 12 cases where auxiliary fans were given as the cause of explosions. In 9 of these occurrences, arcs or sparks from open-type motors or accessory equipment on these fans were given as the primary ignition source. They fell into such ill repute that in a number of cases they were blamed as the ignition source even though smoking was strongly suspected as the primary cause.

The study explores a novel process to sinter porous iron ore with improved productivity and quality. The iron ore is pre-processed with calcined lime to temporarily close pores, preventing water absorption during granulation. This enhances reaction kinetics and early slag formation during sintering, resulting in significant improvements in sinter productivity, product yield, and cold strength property.

There has been an ongoing debate on how to transform engineering education to better prepare students for today’s professional world that is characterized by increasingly complex problems and challenges that engineers are tasked with upon entering the industry. While numerous publications have addressed possibilities of how experiential, problem-based, project-based and active learning can be integrated into the engineering curriculum, there has been little attention on mining engineering with respect to adopting this approach. This paper addresses the possibilities of integrating entrepreneurship education into mining engineering programs in order to foster discussion among academics from mining engineering on how to infuse value-creation experiences across the curriculum on a course, program and departmental level.

Introduction Today, more than 50% of rail-carried commodities are mineral industry related, with coal being the most important single commodity moved by rail. In 1980, coal accounted for more than 5.7 million of the total 22.6 million carloads moved by rail. Metallic ores were third behind grain, with more than 1.4 million carloads. Crushed stone, gravel, sand, and other non-metallic minerals totaled almost 2.3 million carloads. Chemicals and allied products, including fertilizer and coke, added another 1.7 million cars, with petroleum and petroleum products totaling 300,000 carloads. Coal Several things happened in the 1970s that gave rise to increased consumption of coal-particularly western coal-and to its dominant position among rail-carried commodities. First, the Clean Air Act of 1970 required generating plants to make significant reductions in sulfur dioxide emissions. To comply, utilities could either invest in scrubbers or switch to low-sulfur western coal. Many opted for the latter. By 1972, increasing demands by the utility companies halted what had been a 25-year decline in national coal consumption. Second, the Arab Oil Embargo of 1973 put an end to cheap oil and gas, limiting their future as fuels for electric generating purposes and increasing the potential for coal. Third, in 1977, President Carter announced an energy program with coal as its cornerstone, calling for an annual two-thirds increase in national coal production by 1985. He also called for conversion to coal by utilities and large industrial users. Finally, he proposed a 10-year, $10 billion program to encourage domestic coal production and stimulate development of export markets. Coal bounded into world prominence. Foreign demand for steam and metallurgical coal increased tremendously, while US demand for western coal also shot up. This meant greater demands on the transportation sectors that traditionally carried coal to market. Many railroads began programs to serve the coal industry. One example is Burlington Northern's commitment to handle increased western coal tonnages. The company spent more than $1 billion in recent years to develop a system capable of moving more than 91 Mt (100 million st) of coal each year. Other leaders in this renewal were Norfolk and Western, Union Pacific, Santa Fe, and Southern Pacific railways. The importance of the rapid growth of coal traffic to the railroads is shown in the accompanying table, which gives percentages of total tonnages hauled and revenues attributed to coal. With coal providing the railroad industry with a substantial share of its revenues, there is keen competition among the rail companies themselves and among railroads and other transportation sectors for coal haulage. But there is also cooperation when more than one railroad is involved in delivering the coal from mine to market or when a combination of transportation modes is more economical. The latter is represented by Conrail's interest in working with the port authorities of New York and New Jersey to establish a new coal port that would serve not only export markets, but also utilities and industries in the northeast. Iron Ore Next to coal, iron ore (taconite) is the most important single mineral commodity handled by railroads. In Minnesota, where most iron ore is produced, rail transportation is primarily by Burlington Northern and the Duluth, Missabe, & Iron Range Railway Co. (DM&IR). The DM&IR, owned by US Steel, serves several producers on the Mesabi Iron Range. Two of the larger producers, Erie Mining Co. and Reserve Mining Co., also own railroads that operate between the mines and the ports of Silver Bay and Taconite Harbor on Lake Superior. Several iron mines and taconite plants in Michigan are served by the Chicago and Northwestern, and the Soo Line. Total 1981 shipments of taconite and iron ore are estimated at 55.9 Mt (55 million It), compared with about 61 Mt (60 million It) in 1979 the most ever shipped in one year. Unfortunately, the term "control" has a negative connotation in the minds of many of our operating plant personnel. Whereas the opposite is true of those associated with research and technical centers in our industry. The magnitude of this difference in opinion and actual experience has often proved to be a major factor influencing the success or failure of process control applications. Through the years, many plant people have endured a number of unsuccessful attempts by "outside" people to "optimize" their plants; and these experiences have proved to have had quite a callousing effect on them. On the other hand, in many plants, successful process control efforts have made firm allies of the operating personnel, and have increased the number of metallurgical people who are well qualified and experienced in process control. The instrumentation industry, computer industry, and the mining industry's ability to quantify what is really happening in our processes have grown and developed rapidly since the first control efforts were made in the 1930's (1). Because of this-,: new control opportunities are becoming increasingly more feasible and older well established ones are becoming even more practical and necessary with regard to the economic s of our industry.

The purpose of this paper is to tell a story - and it is a story with a moral. My topic is Present Trends in the Tax Environment Affecting Mineral Development in Canada, and the first thing to recognize is that, with depressed metal prices and weakening western economies, taxes, in and of themselves, are not really the cause of the Canadian mining industry's present doldrums. But the character and level of mining taxes in Canada has had a profound influence on the development of the industry over the past decade, and the expectations of what taxes the industry will face in future years will influence the industry's further growth. My theme today is that, in Canada, our tax system has, in the past, served as a negative and destabilizing influence in the mining industry: it has contributed to a major short-fall in investment commitments and hence in the contribution which the mining industry can make to the Canadian economy, and the adverse effect on the industry of previous high tax rates was made far worse by the confusing, contradictory and perverse nature of the tax system itself. This is a story with some happy parts in it, and, in fact, governments in Canada did learn, haltingly and grudgingly, that there are limits on the amounts that governments could safely extract from the industry, and that some assurances of long term fiscal stability were necessary if investors were to be induced to make massive commitments which could only be recovered over very lengthy periods.

The Mercer Clay bed in central Pennsylvania has produced feedstocks for the refractory industry in the USA and has also been investigated as a source of alumina and lithium. Developments in global markets for these commodities, as well as rare earth elements, have led to their classification as critical minerals in the USA, in turn renewing production opportunities for the Mercer Clay resource. The work reported here includes a review of the clay types and minerals involved, as well as past mineral processing and extractive metallurgy test work, and reports new research results from renewed investigation of the deposit as a polymetallic resource. This renewed work has found lithium contents that exceed 1,000 ppm, lying directly below the overlying Mercer coal, where the alumina content ranged from 32 to 34 wt%. Total rare earth concentrations were somewhat lower than have been found elsewhere in the region, and the highest contents were also found to be stratigraphically close to the coal. Further work is required to establish the mineral hosts for lithium and rare earths and to define the extent of enriched alumina, lithium, and rare earth concentrations.

Prior to 1995, the smelting process at the Kennecott Utah Copper Corporation (KUCC) smelter consisted of Noranda reactors and Pierce-Smith converters. In the consideration of expansion opportunities, the existing process did not lend itself to a program geared towards processing the total output of KUCC mining and milling operations. During 1989 and 1990, a number of smelting options were evaluated. The final selection was the Outokumpu flash smelting process, coupled with the new Kennecott-Outokumpu flash converting technology. Facilities were designed and installed to process 1.0 million tonnes per year of copper concentrate, with the ability to expand to 1.2 million tonnes per year. Following the shutdown of the smelter facility utilizing the Noranda technology in May 1995, the flash smelting furnace commenced operation in June with the flash converting furnace startup following a few weeks later. The smelter has achieved design production targets and environmental goals. Current operating rates are at or above design rates for concentrate and matte processing. Emissions are lower than the permit levels and equate to less than 3.5 kg of S02 per tonne of copper. This paper outlines the design, construction, startup and the first two years of operation of the modernized KUCC smelter.

Soft ground tunneling poses major challenges to the underground industry. Most of soft ground tunnels are in highly urbanized areas, often include limited cover, and include a strong trend of increasing diameters. Therefore, soft ground tunneling works can sometimes cause inevitable ground movements and settlements that may lead to damages to adjacent buildings, roads, structures or utilities; many of these being “lifeline” infrastructure assets. Tunneling operations, Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) advance rates, and face pressure control can significantly increase or decrease such risks, depending on how well the TBM and operational parameters are applied to the ground conditions. Additionally, the risks of impacting existing infrastructure are heightened in many parts of North America because of cobbles and boulders. To date there is no standardized guideline that determines appropriate tunneling rates nor operator’s guidelines, to ensure safe tunnelling in soft ground. The paper analyzes tunneling records from completed soft ground tunnels to determine a relation between ground conditions, tunnel cover, TBM cutters maintenance and TBM advance rates. The records are discussed to draw several mitigation measures to be adopted during tunnelling, to reduce risks of settlements, over excavation or sinkholes.

Computer simulation models of working mines can be of great benefit to the mining engineer. Such models have been used in mine planning (how many trucks/shovels to have, when to add new equipment, etc.), mine design (should a dispatch system be purchased, where is the optimum location for mine equipment, etc.). A simulation model can be thought of as a dynamic representation of the mine and can easily be changed to reflect a wide variety of different situation. Often a major problem for the engineer is how to present the results of the simulation study. Using PROOF(R) animation it is now possible to interface the results of the simulation and project them onto a computer screen in cartoon fashion.

One of the most important processing engineering tools for designing mineral processing facilities is linear circuit analysis. This technique, originally conceived and developed by Meloy, Williams, and Fuerstenau nearly four decades ago, provides fundamental insights regarding how unit operations interact and respond when arranged in multi-stage processing circuits. Researchers have successfully utilized this tool to improve the operating performance of industrial processing circuits incorporating coal spirals, magnetic separators, mineral spirals, and eddy current separators. More recently, advanced versions of this tool have also been developed to provide a standardized framework for circuit mass balance calculations, to output exact analytical solutions to mass yield and value-based efficiency expressions, and to estimate uncertainty propagation in separation circuits. This article reviews the historical development of linear circuit analysis, describes how the technique has evolved to address more complex circuit design problems, and presents industrial case studies that highlight the importance of this process engineering tool.

The role of geology in coal exploration, mine planning and mine development has, in the past, been relatively small. The primary reason for this lies in. the simplicity of geologic concepts that were necessary to bring these operations about. These concepts can be briefly stated as follows: 1) coal occurs in the beds or layers and is overlain and underlain by shales, sandstone or limestone in varying porportions, 2) each coal bed has been given a name and certain quality characteristics can often be associated with a named bed and 3) coal beds (and their adjoining rocks) are often folded into broad anticlines or synclines and, in some places, displaced or faulted. In actual practice, however, these simple principles have been found wanting. Thickening, thinning, pinch outs or changes in coal quality occurred but the occurrence was apparently unpredictable and the only real solution to such problems seemed to be practice and experience. This combined with ingeneous engineering solutions have provided answers to most questions. Perhaps a more fundamental reason that geology could offer so little input to coal mining is that the thickest, most persistant and best quality coal seams followed the above stated rules fairly well. In many areas, however, such seams are now nearing exhaustion and the increased demand for clean, non-polluting, safe energy is quickly bringing a need for techniques of exploration and mining procedures that will make development of formerly unminable seams a profitable venture. For the past 20 years some considerable body of knowledge has been added to the framework of the geology of sedimentary rocks and it is the purpose of this paper to present some of these newer ideas that will be useful in solving some of the present problems of coal exploration and development.

OBJECTIVES OF RADIATION MONITORING Monitoring is a tool used in the practice of radiation protection. The primary reasons for monitoring are to reduce radiation exposures to levels that are as low as reasonably achievable and to assure that no individual receives a dose exceeding the maximum individual dose limit. The documentation of radiation doses for legal, medical, or epidemiological reasons is a subordinate function of any monitoring program. The investment in radiation monitoring programs should be guided by four criteria: (1) the detection and avoidance of unnecessary exposures, (2) the magnitude of potential health risks, (3) the determination of combined doses and risks with adequate confidence, and (4) the verification of compliance with established limits. FIRST CRITERION: DOSE REDUCTION - DETECT AND CORRECT UNNECESSARY EXPOSURES The system of dose limitation advocated by the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP, 1977), and subscribed to in a broad sense by various regulatory agencies, is comprised of three essential ingredients: (1) [justification] of any practice that produces radiation doses by some commensurate net benefit, (2) [optimization] of radiation control measures by reducing doses to levels that are as low as reasonably achievable, and (3) [limitation] of individual doses to preclude inequities and [moldistribution] of risks. All too often, only the third criterion - the limitation of individual doses to prescribed regulatory limits - is explicitly addressed in everyday radiation protection programs. The emphasis of most exposure control and monitoring efforts appears to be directed toward limiting and documenting individual doses that might approach the legal limit. The first two criteria, i.e. justification and optimization, should contribute to a rationale for allocating monitoring efforts. When applied to individuals, these criteria mean the detection and elimination of unnecessary exposures. This should be a high priority of any monitoring program. Measurements should be directed toward detecting inoperative or ineffective control measures, whether or not there is a risk of exceeding the individual dose limits. The ICRP recommends a procedure that can be used effectively to reduce unnecessary exposures. A n investigation level should be established at an exposure rate substantially lower than the regulatory limit, e.g. 30% of the limit (ICRP 26, 1977, p.33). Measurements obtained during routine monitoring that exceed the investigation level are evaluated with respect to cause and potential reduction. To be effective, the evaluation results should be formally recorded and conveyed both to management and to the workers involved. Although the investigation level recommended by the ICRP is based on a fixed exposure rate or derived air concentration, an equally effective evaluation program may be based on the investigation of a percentage of all measurements. For example, one might investigate the highest 5% or a random selection of all measurements. In any case, the objective is to detect and correct situations that are producing unnecessary exposures. SECOND CRITERION: MONITOR IN PROPORTION TO THE MAGNITUDE OF RISK The ICRP criteria apply generally to all radiation exposures. However, a second priority for monitoring programs should be established on the basis of the nature of the exposures and the magnitude of the health risks involved. Current practices in radiation protection are based on dose limits to specific organs and assessment of individual exposure pathways, with little consideration of the combined doses from various pathways. Although the intent of the ICRP recommendations was to limit the total dose to each critical organ, combined doses from external and internal sources are rarely determined. The recent recommendations of the ICRP (Publ. 26, 1977) are based on the limitation of total health risk from occupational radiation exposures. Implementation of this concept would necessarily require the measurement, calculation and summation of doses and concomitant risks to all organs of the body from all exposure pathways. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has taken the first step toward translating the ICRP recommendations into regulations. The proposed recommendations for Federal Radiation Protection Guidance for Occupational Exposures (USEPA, 1981) include provisions for summing the risk-weighted organ doses to determine compliance with an effective whole-body dose equivalent limit. Whether or not the proposed guidance is modified before final adoption, it seems clear that some version of dose summation and combined risk limitation will be included in future regulations. "Understanding ground control problems continues to remain a focus of the mining engineering community. To aid mine operators and engineers in identifying and responding to ground control issues, the Ground Observation System (GOS) is being developed. The GOS is an integrated, web-based graphical user interface that displays ground response data collected wirelessly from an underground mine. It presents data in an intuitive manner to assist mine personnel, who are on- or off-site, in quickly identifying hazardous areas. Geotechnical instrumentation will be connected to wireless transmitters that will relay data in real-time to a surface computer that stores the information in a database. The GOS website will then display the geotechnical data in graphical and tabular forms, as well as in conditionally formatted mine maps. Data from each measurement device will be able to be viewed in its entirety or within a time interval, and can be downloaded for further analysis. The ability of the GOS to quickly interpret and communicate mine hazards to personnel of varying technical ability should prove to be a useful tool in understanding ground control and thus improving mine safety.INTRODUCTION Computer-based data information centers that convey operating parameters and conditions are prevalent in modern underground mines. Today’s systems are popular in showing ventilation controls and monitoring equipment performance (Jyothi & Meena 2013). In ground control monitoring, Conover, Ross, and Bigby, 2010 have installed a wired telltale roof monitoring system that sends roof displacement data every ten minutes to a computer on the surface. The computer receives, stores, and displays the data in real time. Data can also be viewed remotely through a password protected internet connection. Additionally, an internet connection allowed for remote updates to the system which streamlined software development and maintenance by eliminating travel (Conover et al., 2010). Currently, no such system beyond Conover et al.’s design has been accomplished. The Ground Observation System (GOS) is being developed to fill the void of real-time geotechnical monitoring in underground mines. A wide array of data will be transmitted wirelessly and broadcasted to on- and off-site mine personnel through the internet. The GOS will incorporate geotechnical data from roof deformation, borehole scratch testing, photogrammetry, and seismic monitoring into one interface, all while achieving permissibility for the use in gaseous mines. As a result, a comprehensive view of rock movement due to mining will be available. The overall purpose of the GOS is to deliver warnings; to ensure reliable data is relayed to personnel for the identification of potential ground failures, provide mine engineers information to design more stable mines, and assist with further geotechnical research."

The Hurtières Tunnel was built in 1995 with drill and blast method, in metamorphic schist. It is located between Lyon and Torino on the A 43 motorway in the French Alps. During the construction, a geological hazard was encountered, which caused a massive ground collapse. The tunnel was filled up with 3,000 m3of glacial materials. Geological investigations realized after the accident showed that a narrow glacial valley was present at this location the water table was 40 m above the tunnel level. The paper will describe the collapse and the remedial methods which were implemented to proceed through the failure area. These included drainage works,2,000 m3 grouting and 6,200 ml jet grouting columns.

Congress, under the Nuclear Waste Policy Act of 1982, as amended, charged the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) with the responsibility for safe and permanent disposal of high-level radioactive waste in a geologic repository. The waste will consist of spent fuel from commercial nuclear generating plants and reprocessing activities. Under direction of this law DOE is currently evaluating Yucca Mountain in Southern Nevada as the candidate site for a potential high-level radioactive waste repository. Presidential, Congressional and State of Nevada approval are needed for repository construction to proceed after successful completion of site characterization and recommendation of the site to Congress. The DOE will submit a license application to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to construct the geologic repository. Following successful construction DOE will update its license application to operate the repository.

Lithium-ion battery pack fires pose great hazards to the safety and health of miners. A detailed experimental study has been conducted at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Pittsburgh Mining Research Division (PMRD) to investigate the effectiveness of different fire suppression systems on Li-ion battery pack fire extinguishment. Tests were conducted in a well-ventilated container. Two sizes of battery packs (12V, 24V) were heated by heater strips to trigger thermal runaway and fire. Water mist with different flow rates, ABC powder, type D dry chemical, and water mist with F500 additives were used as the fire suppression agents. Multiple thermocouples were installed on the battery packs to measure the temperature evolution during the tests. The results indicated that the water mist with F500 additives is the most effective suppressant among the agents tested. Dry chemicals, however, do quench the fire for a moment, but cannot prevent re-ignition of the battery since they do not provide enough cooling. The findings of this paper can be used to develop safer battery fire suppression techniques in mining environments.

Every year thousands of people from all over the world come to Mount Parnasse, visiting Delphi, the Parnasse ski-resort and other sights in the area of Fokida, available to all ages all year round. This region of Greece, is not only gifted with natural beauty, but also with valuable underground natural wealth: inside Mount Parnasse and the adjoining Ghiona Mountain, there are rich bauxite deposits - the ore from which aluminium is made. In this magnificent part of our country, any mining activities undertaken must be adapted to coexist within such an ecologically sensitive area. This demands an enormous effort, knowledge and the use of technology. This is definitely our Company's primary objective. Our company's (Silver & Baryte Ores Mining Co. S.A.) activities in the area began in 1933, when Euripides Mavrommatis and the two Eliopoulos brothers, Elias and George, established "Bauxite Parnasse SA". Since then, ten thousand people have worked in these ore deposits, and 45 million tons of bauxite have been extracted. The full length of the underground excavations is more than 300 kilometers and 115 million cubic meters of limestone have been extracted on surface mining. In 1996, Bauxite Parnasse merged with Silver & Baryte Ores Mining Co. S.A. Now, the company exports more than 1.500.000 mt per year of bauxite to more than 15 countries around the world, offers a significant amount of job opportunities in the region, and imports valuable exchange into the country.

"Lithium is a silver-white alkali metal that has recently become a target commodity for many junior mining companies. Lithium has a wide range of applications including ceramics and glass, lubricating greases, air treatment, continuous cast mold flux powders, polymer production, and primary aluminium production, but the current popularity of lithium can be attributed to an anticipated increase in demand for lithium ion batteries. The most common lithium-bearing minerals occur globally in pegmatites and granites. Spodumene [LiAl(Si2O6)] is the most desirable economic lithium-bearing mineral due to its high lithium content (theoretical Li2O content of about 8 wt%). However, lithium can also be hosted in petalite, micas, tourmaline, and phosphate minerals. In Canada there are a number of spodumene deposits in Ontario and Quebec at development stage that have the potential to help narrow the forecast lithium supply gap stemming from the widespread acceptance and use of electric vehicles. This paper discusses the beneficiation of hard rock lithium deposits, including an in depth review of the use of flotation to upgrade spodumene. A review of the use of dense media separation (DMS), magnetic separation, and roasting as means to process spodumene bearing ores is also discussed. As of 2015, the end use of lithium was estimated to be as follows: lithium-ion batteries (35%), ceramics and glass (32%), lubricating greases (9%), air treatment (5%), continuous casting mould flux powders (5%), polymer production (4%), primary aluminium production (1%) and other uses (9%) (Jaskula, 2014). Lithium is found in brine lake deposits containing lithium chloride and in hard rock pegmatite deposits. It can be sold in a range of product types; as mineral concentrate, brine, compound (lithium carbonate or lithium hydroxide) and metal depending on its intended end use (Goonan, 2012; Jaskula 2014). In the 1990s the United States and Chile were the largest producers of lithium globally, primarily from brine operations (Ober, 1994). Most of the lithium compounds produced over this period were consumed in the glass, ceramics and aluminium industries. In the 1980s and 1990s there were two major lithium operations in the United States: brine operations at Silver Peak, Nevada, and a spodumene mine and lithium carbonate/lithium hydroxide plant in Kings Mountain, North Carolina. The Kings Mountain operations ceased production in 1991 and were eventually dismantled in 1994. Brine operations were also active in Argentina and Chile, while the largest lithium ore deposit in the world was operated at Greenbushes, Western Australia. During this period it was predicted that major shifts in demand for lithium would come from the success and widespread use of electric vehicles (Ober, 1994)."

Uranium has been mined in Namibia since the 1970s. The worldwide increasing need for energy in the early 2000s has led to the development and opening of a second uranium mine in 2007 and has triggered an increased interest in uranium exploration, often referred to as “the Namibian Uranium Rush.” In all, four mining licenses have been granted by the Namibian Government, which currently has two mines in operation, a third undertaking trial mining and the fourth in project finance negotiations. In addition, highly intensive prospecting activities at additional deposits are at an advanced stage. The finalization of the strategic environmental impact assessment (SEA) on uranium mining in 2010, the first of its kind and scale in the world, has enabled the Namibian government to assess this uranium rush and its tremendous legal, socioeconomic and environmental impacts and to prepare for the different future scenarios conceivable when this article was written in 2011, including both a skyrocketing and a complete breakdown of demand scenario. The Fukushima disaster and plans of the Namibian government to significantly increase royalties and company taxes in 2011 have threatened the market situation, forcing investors to reevaluate Namibian uranium mining projects. However, with the tax and royalty increase initiative since withdrawn, most projects are back on track at this point in time.
