In order to address the difficulty of accurate segmentation of froth images of different sizes, a method of froth image segmentation based on highlight correction and parameter adaptation is proposed. First, a machine vision system on a single-cell flotation machine is built to collect froth images. Homomorphic filtering is used to improve the uneven brightness and shadow of the images. Fuzzy c-means (FCM) clustering is then utilized to classify similar highlights that belong to the same froth. After Otsu threshold segmentation, a parameter-adaptive morphological operation is used to extract the marker points and edge bands and correct the froth edges in the original image. Finally, the modified image is filtered by morphological reconstruction, and the highlight mark is used as the local minimum point for watershed segmentation. Three sizes of froth images are segmented in comparative experiments. The results show that the proposed method is suitable for the segmentation of froth images of different sizes. The position of the extracted segmentation line is close to reality, with average over-segmentation and under-segmentation rates for froth images of 2.6% and 6.8%, respectively. The froth image segmentation performance is stronger than that of the other methods examined.

This paper discusses the effect of grinding media composition, mineral type and slurry environment on the wear rate of various grinding media (balls). Sufficient wear data have been obtained and correlated with the modes of wear determined from examination of the ball surfaces using scanning electron microscopy. Five modes of wear have been identified to be operative under certain slurry conditions for the various ball compositions studied.

Some of you may be old enough to remember -- as I do -- the early days of World War II. A highly prepared, well-equipped Japanese striking force had moved like lightning across the South Pacific islands and Southeastern Asia. As the invasion force pushed its way down the Malaysian Peninsula, Singapore stood serene and beautiful, protected by its natural moat of water, busy as ever with its commercial pursuits. One can see its captains of trade and industry now, sitting com¬fortably on the veranda of the "Singapore Country Club", sipping scotch between cricket games, convinced that the weary, logistically extended Japanese force couldn't possibly cross over to their island which had been so secure for a hundred' years or more. No need to remind you what happened. The brave men in their ships at sea and in the gun emplacements ashore were hopelessly out-gunned and out-maneuvered.

Biological leaching using native heterotrophic bacteria was studied by the U.S. Bureau of Mines as a means of extracting manganese from a domestic low-grade wad ore. Column heap leaching simulation techniques were employed using molasses as the nutrient source for the bacteria. These column studies were designed to investigate the effects of molasses medium flow rate, concentration, and replacement interval on the extent and rate of manganese extraction. .Results showed that flow rates between 0.41 and 8.1 L/min/m2 had little impact on manganese extraction. The total amount of molasses used did have a direct effect on the extent and rate of manganese extraction. Manganese extractions over 90-pct were obtained in 12 weeks of bioleaching with 2-week medium replacement cycles.

This paper shows the metallurgical test results that led to the design of the heap leach facilities of Philex Mining Corporation. The design incorporates a water management model as process solution circulation is excessive with high rainfall intensity in the area. This poses problems in the operations requiring stringent controls than would be necessary in a less severe environment. The corporate perspective embraces on environmentally-sound mineral development. A budget is always provided to environmental management making certain that no industrial development is moved forward at the expense of the environment.

The U.S. Department of Energy has undertaken, in a cost sharing partnership with industry and utilities, an extensive coal-oil mixture (COM) combustion program in a number of promising applications. One of these is the injection of COM through tuyeres into a blast furnace in lieu of oil. From work done previously, it has been established that COM can be burned in existing oil, fired facilities. The issues being addressed by the current DOE program are: 1) determination of best available technology to achieve environmentally acceptable operation, and 2) determination of applications for which COM can be utilized economically.

Marcona Corporation produces about 3.5 million long tons of iron ore pellets annually on its two travelling grate pelletizing machines at San Nicolas, Peru. During 1969, these pellets will be shipped to customers in four marketing areas--Japan, the United States, Europe, and South America. All of these sales are on the open market, and product quality is a major concern. Typical chemical, structural, and quality test results for Marcona pellets are given in Table 1. [ ]

The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is a United States Department of Energy facility located in southeastern New Mexico. It is designed for the safe disposal of transuranic radioactive waste in deep geologic salt beds. Westinghouse TRU Solutions, LLC, the managing and operating contractor, undertook a project to simulate the processes at WIPP in order to identify bottlenecks and optimize available resources. The activities simulated in the model included the receipt, processing and disposal of radioactive waste underground, the mining of new areas for future waste disposal and the transportation of salt out of the mine. The complexity of the processes and the interactive requirements between processes required the use of advanced modeling techniques. The simulation model includes a huge number of locations and path network node points, with movement to and from the locations controlled using parameters rather than explicit routing. Information for the timing and sequence of the mining and nuclear waste emplacement operations is brought into the model via spreadsheets. Arrays in the simulation model keep track of past and future events that occur. Routing to the multiple possible positions in the underground mine is done using attributes, and system functions within ProModel in order to allow for a highly flexible sequence of planned events and to reduce the level of effort in creating the ProModel processing. Considerable use of subroutines in the simulation model is utilized for parametric decision-making that is repetitive. This presentation describes the modeling techniques used to accurately simulate the surface and underground operations. The surface and underground operations are considerably different, thus they will be treated in their own sections.

Tracer gas sampling methods are useful for monitoring ventilation systems, especially in remote or inaccessible areas, and can be utilized for analysis of the ventilation system immediately following a mine emergency. However, the success of this technique is largely dependent on the accuracy of release and sampling methods. Analysis of sampling methods is crucial for rapid response and dependable results during emergencies. For the purpose of this study, four well-accepted sampling techniques currently used in the mining industry were compared using solid-phase microextraction (SPMe) fibers with sulfur hexafluoride (SF6), an industry standard, as the tracer gas. Current sample collection techniques include plastic syringes, glass syringes, Tedlar bags and vacutainers. SPMe fibers are used in a variety of industries, from forensics to environmental sampling, and are a solventless method of sampling analytes. To analyze these sampling methods, samples were taken from a 0.01 % standard mixture of SF6 and nitrogen and analyzed using electron capture gas chromatography. A relative standard error of less than 10% validated results to compare the accuracy of various methods. The technical and practical issues surrounding each sampling method were also observed and discussed.

Safe, efficient underground mining is dependent upon proper pillar sizing. Pillar sizing is typically based on a combination of observation of prior behavior, point measurements, theory and numerical modeling. The actual stress redistribution within a pillar, while assumed for many years, has rarely been imaged. Such imaging can help confirm whether or not theoretical and numerical modeling methods agree with actual conditions within a pillar. This research presents a case study from a longwall mine in the western United States. A two-entry, gate-road yield pillar in the headgate of the mine was instrumented with seismometers and convergence monitoring stations, and was monitored over a period of about six months as the longwall face approached the pillar. In this paper, the stress distribution imaged using seismic tomography is compared to the stress distribution expected from theoretical models, geotechnical measurements and numerical models. The tomography results generally agree with those proposed by theory, convergence measurements and numerical modeling results. The agreement of the methods provides validation for the theorized stress redistribution, and this study provides further evidence that tomography can indicate the redistribution of induced stress within a mined rockmass and is another tool available to ensure that mining is conducted safely and efficiently.

Overexposure to noise remains a widespread, serious health hazard in the U.S. mining industry. Most other categories of illnesses and injuries associated with mining have improved, with the exception of hearing loss. U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) coal noise data from 2000-2004 show that the continuous mining machine (CMM) is first among all equipment, accounting for 35% of noise overexposures. Joy Mining Machinery, in collaboration with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), is conducting research to reduce noise generated by continuous mining machines. This paper describes a "JOY Designed for Noise Reduction" (JOY DNR; patent pending) tail section as a noise control for reducing the noise overexposures of CMM operators. Underground testing shows a 45% to 65% noise exposure reduction for the operator when comparing the JOY DNR tail section results to those for a standard machine. Utilizing this newly developed noise control, along with previously proven controls, will provide CMM operators an opportunity to be within the MSHA permissible exposure limit (MSHA-PEL). I. CONCEPT MARTA's Peachtree Center Station is being mined out of hard rock, directly beneath Atlanta's central business district, with minimal surface disruption during construction. Its cost is competitive with that of a conventional cut-and-cover alternative owing to its design concept, which utilizes the rock as a primary structural and architectural material. II. PLANNING The station was originally planned for cut-and-cover construction. However, Peachtree Street is unusually narrow for a main business street (generally 78 feet (24 m) between building lines) and cut-and-cover construction would therefore be very disruptive to surface traffic and severely restrict access to adjacent buildings, including Peachtree Center, Atlanta's showcase business/commercial complex. INTRODUCTION Conveyor belt fires represent a serious hazard in underground mines. This fact is well understood in most mining countries. The statistical data for Ontario mines (1) indicates that the majority of the conveyor fires occurred at the head pulley of the conveyor belt. The main emphasis for fire prevention and detection should then be concentrated at the drive pulley of the conveyor designed to transport non-combustible material. In the case of conveyor belt fires, it is of utmost importance to detect the hazard at an early stage, when the overheating has not yet reached the ignition point. Thermal noise detection sensors were installed in 1987 at several conveyor sites at Inco mines. PRODUCTS OF COMBUSTION THERMAL DEGRADATION OF CONVEYOR BELT Various investigations on conveyor belt fire hazards have been made in the past (2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7). Several belt samples (6, 7) were subjected to thermal oxidative degradation. The belts used in these tests were neoprene, polyvinyl chloride and styrene-butadiene rubber (6). About 70 different compounds were identified in the volatile thermooxidative products. As expected, hydrogen chloride was the major toxic product formed, accompanied by relatively low quantities of other toxic compounds such as carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, carbon disulfide, hydrogen sulfide, benzene, chloroprene, cresols, chloroethanol, formic acid and C8 hydrocarbons. The research investigation (8) performed by the USBM indicated that "smoldering combustibles generate a very low level of CO compared to the level of smoke produced". The cited publication (8), states that, "During smoldering combustion, typical mine combustibles produce about 2.5 times more smoke than CO. As fires develop to their flaming stages, the trend reverses and about eight times as much CO is produced as smoke." The reader is referred to several significant sources of additional information pertaining to emission products that can be found in references (8), (9), and (10). ANALYSIS OF FIRE HAZARDS U.S.A. AND ENGLAND Nearly 15 percent of all underground coal mine fires in the United States involved ignition of conveyor belts (7). In many cases, the fires propagated through thousands of feet of belt entry and created losses in the millions of dollars. Some of these fires consisted of rubber belts. Some involved polyvinyl chloride and neoprene belts that were classified "fire resistant". Typically, a belt fire begins after the conveyor is stopped. The fire is initiated by burning coal dust and grease accumulation around defective rollers or belt drives that have become heated by friction (7). An analysis of 113 conveyor fires (11) showed that 41 originated at the driving pulleys, 32 at the defective rollers, and 40 elsewhere on the conveyor system. The severity of the fire, which can spread along a conveyor road, has been emphasized by the disaster at Creswell Colliery, Derbyshire, on September 26, 1950, when 80 men were overcome and killed by toxic fumes from the fire (12). The fire started from smoldering caused by friction, and developed into a flaming combustion, propagating along the roadway containing the rubber belt at an estimated speed of 40.2 m/s (90 mph), and travelling a total of 650 m (2100 ft) THE INFLAMMATION OF CONVEYOR BELTS THE MECHANISM OF IGNITION Defective operation of a conveyor belt may start a fire in several ways: - Friction of the belt on the drive pulley. - Jamming of a guide roller, and others.

"In coal mines, handheld air, electric and hydraulic powered drills are used along belt conveyors, in single entry development, in entries where there are obstructions, and in longwall recovering bolting. In hard rock mines, pneumatically powered jackleg drills are typically used in narrow vein mining. Drilling and bolting in narrow confines has traditionally been performed with pneumatically or hydraulically powered hand-held drills or newer electrically powered hand- held hammer drills due to their low cost, simplicity of operation, and extreme flexibility due to their small size. Mechanized equipment has typically been too large, too expensive, inefficient due to the confined space, and too restrictive due to lack of flexibility for use in narrow confines.Although the handheld equipment is effective, it requires operator exposure to certain inherent hazardous conditions in use. These include falling rock from the roof, rib and face; tripping hazards; bending twisting lifting hazards; high noise levels and chemical fumes from the pneumatic exhaust. The operation of the hand held equipment can adversely affect the long-term health of the operator - continual jackleg operation frequently results in longterm damage to hearing, shoulders, arms and wrist joints and back injuries. This results in a reduction in life style for the operator and higher personnel turnover rates for the mining company.Hand-held drills also typically have limited thrust and torque capability that limits their ability to push long resin bolts, inadequate torque to properly install resin bolts or to properly torque mechanical or tensioned rebar bolts. Hand-held drills do not offer any type of protection for the operator from roof or rib falls. They do not offer any means for handling roof or rib mesh. Since the operator stands on the ground the maximum safe drilling height without use of a ladder or "riding the drill" is limited to 2.44 m (8 ft)."

The Pan American Mine, in southeastern Nevada, is about 26 miles west southwest of Pioche, Nevada, and about 266 miles southwest of Salt Lake City, Utah. The mine is located in the Comet Mining District, and since the ore occurrence is generally the same in the Comet and well known adjacent Pioche Mining Districts, the history of the two shall be considered the same. The Pioche District began about 1869 with the production of high grade gold and silver from fissure veins in the Cambrian Prospect Mountain quartzite. Peak production was reached in 1872 and then declined with sporadic production until 1924, when Combined Metals Reduction Co. shipped its first, complex sulphide ores mined from the CM bed at Pioche. Extensive ore bodies in this CM bed attracted interest in the same bed in the Comet District. Small pockets of high grade silver-lead were mined from fissures cutting the CM and other limestone beds above. Exploration in the CM beds at this time proved a large area of mineralization too low grade to be considered ore.

Pilot plant operations are described for the treatment of manganiferous zinc concentrates from the Gamsberg ore deposit in South Africa via conventional electrolytic zinc processing. Two methods were employed for the control of excess manganese ions in the pilot plant electrolyte involving (1) chemical oxidation and (2) anodic oxidation. The chemical oxidation method for manganese control was very successful. It also was found that the addition of manganese dioxide ore was not required for oxidation of ferrous iron during the neutral leach or jarosite precipitation steps. A new method (JAR process) for iron removal also was tested in the pilot plant.

In order to realize the intelligent mining of coal seam with large dip Angle, this paper adopts the methods of large proportion variable Angle loading threedimensional physical simulation experiment, numerical simulation and field measurement with digital twin technology. The hydraulic support with large dip Angle and large mining height is used as the prototype to design the physical entity model of 1:5 hydraulic support, combined with modeling and graphics rendering technology. Angle, displacement and load sensors were selected and placed to realize the data channel between the lower machine and the upper computer of the digital twin system, so that the position and load data of the physical entity model and the twin model of the laboratory hydraulic support could be shared in real time. Moreover, the multi-dimensional dynamic and static load transfer law and the position evolution characteristics of the support and surrounding rock under different inclination angles were analyzed. The results show that: with the increase of the Angle of the working face, first, the initial support force required by the support decreases, and the damage degree of the roof increases; When the roof is soft, the lifting operation can avoid the instability of the support to a certain extent. Second, under the action of positive pressure, the load of the top beam under different angles is balanced; Under the backpushing action, the load in the upper inclined area of the shield beam increases gradually, while the load in the lower inclined area decreases gradually. Under the lateral push, the load changes periodically, and the load in each cycle is increased compared with that in the previous cycle. Third, the numerical simulation analysis shows that the load on the lower bracket is less than that on the upper bracket, and the load on the bottom of all the columns is greater than that on the middle and upper brackets. In order to reduce the impact of the columns on the bottom plate or the base, it is necessary to improve the anti-subsidence ability of the base. Finally, according to the research results, the improvement and optimization measures of the support are put forward, and the field test shows that these measures effectively solve the problems of sinking, sliding and tipping of the support in the working face with large inclination Angle, and obtain good application results.

Underground construction environments, especially those with limited airflow such as shafts, cross passages, and stations, necessitate effective dust control. This requires combining existing measures with adapted approaches for more efficient and productive operations, cleaner jobsites, and decreased worker exposure to contaminated air. This paper will discuss new configurations and trends in dust collection on Australasian infrastructure projects including WestConnex, Melbourne Metro Tunnel and City Rail Link, all of which have applied innovative methodologies for mobile at-source dust collection. Mobile dust collectors can be track-mounted dust collectors operate alongside equipment, use hydraulic stepping systems to advance with roadheaders, or compact castor-mounted units are used within cross passage confines.

The process of froth flotation as a means of upgrading the quality of coal by removing ash/pyrite and of separating selected mineral(s) from undesired gangue materials is certainly one of the most common unit engineering operations in use today. Flotation has been successfully practiced at the industrial scale for well over 50 years, and if anything, its use is increasing due to the ever decreasing feed grades of the coals and minerals being processed. Flotation, as a process, has also shown itself to be an extremely flexible process that lends itself well to a wide variety of solid/solid separations. Thus separations can involve very different particle sizes, particle densities, relative weight ratios of materials to be separated, etc., with surprisingly little modification in equipment and operating philosophy required.
