Investments in fuel minerals and non-fuel minerals by petroleum companies are not a new phenomena. During the past 25 years, oil firms have entered mining via the acquisition route as well as by the direct development of grassroots mines. In the early 1980s, the "merger mania" in the natural resource industries came to a head. Oil company takeovers of mining firms, as well as other mergers between oil producers, captured headlines repeatedly, and speculation ran wild as to who would next acquire whom. Table 1 summarizes leading mining company mergers in the past two decades. There are some special features to the latest round of minerals investments undertaken by oil companies. First, direct takeovers of mining companies have become the preferred means of entry into minerals, with entry from scratch being relegated to the sidelines. This was not always the case. While there are instances of oil firms buying coal and copper companies dating back to the 1950s and 1960s, most of the early minerals work by petroleum firms was from internally generated projects. When the oil companies first became involved in uranium, for example, the uranium mining industry was in its infancy. There was not much market structure to buy, and it was relatively easy for everyone to get into uranium on the ground floor.

The mill is situated on a hillside overlooking Tucson and the Santa Cruz Valley, the ground generally sloping northeast at a 2.5 percent grade. The hillside location allows for gravity flow generally through the plant as well as for: tailing disposal.

Most statistical measures of mineral exploration continued downward in 1986. Prospects in 1987, however, appear to have brightened for exploration as the overall economic health of the mineral industry improved. The Society of Economic Geologists (SEG) survey of US and Canadian firms documents the marked decline in US mineral exploration since the early 1980's. From 1981 through 1986, the total exploration expenditure by US firms declined by more than 73% (Fig. 1). Exploration expenditures by US firms declined by 66%%. US based professional exploration staffs were slashed by 70% (Fig. 2). Also, many firms have written off some reserves because of weak markets or have not delineated new reserves to replace production. The Canadian government reported that between 1981 and 1986 Canadian molybdenum re¬serves had declined by 30%, lead and zinc reserves by 20%, and nickel and copper reserves by 15%. The SEG survey also shows the immediate impact of the decline in the dollar on US exploration expenditures abroad. Between 1981 and 1986 the share of the exploration dollar spent by US firms outside of the country declined by nearly one-half and exploration acreage abroad declined by 69%. The downward trend of the last six years may finally be near the end as a leaner and more efficient minerals industry starts to gear up for a period of increased activity. An industry survey reported to Mine Development Bimonthly (Metals Economics Group) indicates that mining firms were expected to increase exploration expenditures in 1987 by at least 10% above 1986 levels. Worldwide expenditures for 1987 by companies covered by the report were expected to top $800 million. It is the first time since 1984 that an increase in exploration expenditures was expected. Also, the US Bureau of Land Management reported a 30% increase in new mining claims for fiscal year 1987 over fiscal year 1986. The bulk of the increase in claims was in states having intense gold exploration, particularly Washington and Oregon. Much of the optimism is undoubtedly due to the increases in metal prices that occurred in 1987. Some of these increases include gold, average price up about 20%; copper, average price up 24%; aluminum, average price up 26%; and nickel, average spot price up 20%. The SEG survey shows precious and base metals accounting for 89% of the exploration expenditures in the US in 1986, up 52% from 1981. The US Bureau of Mines estimates that 80% of US exploration activity in 1986 was directed entirely at gold (1986 Minerals Yearbook). Worldwide exploration plans indicate the continued dominance of gold exploration. New programs were announced for Ghana, Malaysia, and Indonesia. Major new exploration programs were also launched for lead-zinc sulfides in Morocco, platinum and palladium in northwest Brazil, rare earth minerals in Greenland, diamonds in Indonesia, and heavy minerals off-shore Australia. "INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES Long rail tunnels require in most cases powerful mechanical ventilations. Besides requirements related to normal operation and maintenance, operational safety always requires a high level of smoke management. Identifying the optimum ventilation concept is essential for achieving proper performance and safety while keeping investment and operational cost at a reasonable level. For the purpose of the present paper, long tunnels have a length of typically 20 km or more. This is related to the European classification of trains (TSI 1303/2014), where the maximum distance from the portals to a firefighting point and between firefighting points is limited to 20 km (only category B passenger rolling stock allowed) or 5 km (general case). From TSI 1303/2014 it can be concluded, that tunnels over 20 km require in any case emergency stations with complex mechanical ventilations. Based on the experience arising from a number of recent projects in the European area, including in particular Gotthard (GBT), Lötschberg, Lyon-Tourin (LTF), Brenner (BBT) and Gibraltar, safety-relevant issues related to the ventilation of long railways tunnels are reviewed in this paper. Amberg Engineering is directly involved in these challenging design tasks and can provide first-hand experience and know-how. As a particular highlight, special attention is devoted to the longest tunnel worldwide, the 57 km long Gotthard Base Tunnel, which will be commissioned in 2016. THE GOTTHARD BASE TUNNEL Overview The Gotthard Base Tunnel will be commissioned in 2016 (official inauguration on the 1st of June and beginning of regular operation on the 11th of December) and will be the worldwide longest tunnel. Its complex and powerful ventilation system is very representative for many other long tunnels and is used as reference in this paper. Therefore, a few key characteristics of the Gotthard Base Tunnel and its ventilation system will be described in some detail in this initial chapter. The Gotthard Base Tunnel (GBT) consists of two single-track tunnel tubes with connecting galleries every 312 meters. Two so-called multi-functional stations (MFS), located at roughly 1/3 and 2/3 of the tunnel length, host the key equipment for normal and for emergency operation. At these locations, double crossovers allow trains to switch from one tunnel tube to the other. An emergency station is located in each multifunctional station, allowing trains to stop in case of emergency. The general layout of the GBT is presented in Figure 1."

"The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has been researching refuge alternatives (RAs) since 2007. RAs typically have built-in pressure relief valves (PRVs) to prevent the unit from reaching unsafe pressures. The U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration requires that these valves vent the chamber at a maximum pressure of 1.25 kPa (0.18 psi, 5.0 in. H2O), or as specified by the manufacturer, above mine atmospheric pressure in the RA. To facilitate PRV testing, an instrumented benchtop test fixture was developed using an off-the-shelf centrifugal blower and ductwork. Relief pressures and flow characteristics were measured for three units: (1) a modified polyvinyl chloride check valve, (2) an off-the-shelf brass/cast-iron butterfly check valve and (3) a commercially available valve that was designed specifically for one manufacturer’s steel prefabricated RAs and had been adapted for use in one mine operator’s built-in-place RA. PRVs used in tent-style RAs were not investigated. The units were tested with different modifications and configurations in order to check compliance with Title 30 Code of Federal Regulations, or 30 CFR, regulations. The commercially available relief valve did not meet the 30 CFR relief pressure specification but may meet the manufacturer’s specification. Alternative valve designs were modified to meet the 30 CFR relief pressure specification, but all valve designs will need further design research to examine survivability in the event of a 103 kPa (15.0 psi) impulse overpressure during a disaster. BackgroundThe Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act of 2006, known as the Miner Act (U.S. Department of Labor, 2006), was enacted in the wake of three mine accidents involving explosions or fire that claimed 19 lives that year. Intended to help improve underground coal mine accident preparedness, the Miner Act includes provisions that target mine safety issues in areas such as emergency response planning; adoption of new technology; training and education; and mine safety standards enforcement. Section 13 of the Miner Act specifically directed the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to provide for research into the effectiveness and viability of refuge alternatives (RAs) for underground coal mines, and the U.S. Department of Labor to act on the results of such research, as appropriate. These mandates culminated in the 2009 adoption of changes to the Title 30 Code of Federal Regulations, or 30 CFR, mining health and safety regulations (U.S. Department of Labor, 2008), requiring underground coal mines to supply mine emergency RAs and associated components so as to provide a life-sustaining environment for persons trapped underground. Such RAs can be either selfcontained mobile units or built-in-place facilities. The regulatory changes also include provisions establishing requirements for the approval of RAs and their components by the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), among which are numerous criteria for providing a safe breathable atmosphere under positive pressure within the RAs. One criterion for maintaining a safe RA atmosphere is the inclusion of an air pressure relief valve that will activate at a maximum of 1.25 kPa (specified as 0.18 psi, or approximately 5.0 in. H2O), or as specified by the RA manufacturer, above mine atmospheric pressure in the RA (U.S. Department of Labor, 2008)."

In many underground mines the excavated ore is produced during the blasting process. Drilling machines that are used to drill the blastholes, where later the explosives will be mounted, are crucial for this task. In order to optimize the currently used techniques, great emphasis is placed on increasing the efficiency and safety of blasthole drilling operations. The natural consequence is the development of monitoring systems and algorithms for processing operational and historical data. In this article, we present the result of the analysis of drilling data carried out as part of the IlluMINEation project. The paper proposes an algorithm for work cycle detection for drilling machines, together with the estimation of general operating parameters and diagnosing the drilling process on the basis of long-term data. Based on the available data, selected components of the drilling cycles have been indicated. Several approaches based on the parameters of the defined cycles are proposed. These approaches can be used in the future to create a full-fledged system for examining the effectiveness and safety of mining drilling rigs.

"A tunnel project poses many challenges; the operation of the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) being one of them. Mechanized tunneling is known as a safe and effective alternative to other methods in terms of schedule and cost; however, efficiency can be severely affected by a bad TBM selection and qualification and employment of inexperienced operators. The success of a mechanized tunneling project involves a comprehensive and interdisciplinary consideration of all contributing factors such as TBM technical specification and selection, TBM design and procurement including ancillary equipment and tunnel linings. The tunnel equipment selection along with the operation can make or break the project. The objective of this paper is to address the importance of the skills and qualifications of the TBM crew with particularity to the TBM Operator. The study includes the Owner and Consultant involvement in the selection and pre-qualification of the TBM crew and specifically the TBM operator as well as the role of Contractor and TBM manufacturer in TBM operator training. This paper also analyzes the possibility of issuing a TBM operator certification, and discusses the benefits and significance of periodic training and certification programs. INTRODUCTION Training in the tunneling industry is not a new topic. The industry continues to evolve and become more complex with technology advances and expansion of mechanical tunnelling to mechanized shaft construction, large diameter drilling and mining industry applications. The need for professionals trained to operate mechanized tunnelling equipment is ever increasing, while there is a significant number of veterans who will be ageing out in the next 5 years. Consequently attracting young professional is a very important aspect of sustaining a qualified pool of professionals. For any given tunnel project, the owner and the engineer spend up to several years, studying the ground conditions during preliminary and final design. Post contract award the contractor spend additional months studying the ground again to develop the optimum means and methods for construction. All this time and money spent at the beginning of the project has the purpose of developing the optimum tunnel design, assessing the risk associated and implementing mitigation measures to reduce risks to acceptable levels. Following the tunnel design process, sophisticated TBMs are being specified and sourced to ensure the best tool for the job. The question raises here: Are there available experienced/trained professionals capable of operating these sophisticated machines?"

Universities and colleges in three countries -Australia, Canada and the United States, recognized the need to establish and reorganize geoscience programs at the vocational and two-year technical levels. To accomplish this goal, a cooperative study with industry in one state or province from each country was initiated. These include 1) Tasmania, Australia, 2) British Columbia, Canada and 3) Alaska, United States. Over one hundred mineral exploration companies and private consultants cooperated in the study by providing information regarding their specific training needs for support personnel, the data gathered has been used to identify training area for semi-skilled, skilled and technical personnel in geophysics, including, but not limited to, geo-logical skills, geophysical skills, surveying skills, environ-mental skills, and computer skills. With areas of major educational need defined for geophysical exploration, an educational field skills model has been developed for the three levels of training. The depth of each level of education and the training objectives for the work force at each level will he discussed.

Rio Tinto is one of the world's largest mining companies, involved in every stage of metal and mineral production, producing aluminium, copper, diamonds, coal, iron ore, uranium, gold and industrial minerals. Operations are in more than 50 countries in multiple continents and vary in location between large urban centres, regional industrial complexes and remote regions. A risk-based strategy was developed by Rio Tinto to manage its air quality impacts on a global scale. The strategy consists of three objectives ? improving air quality performance, developing industry leading practices and engaging and influencing in air issues. This paper discusses three major successes achieved this approach. Firstly, how air shed resources are managed in constrained air sheds. Secondly, how financial modelling is used to value air quality constraints, and thirdly, how a rigorous and comprehensive e-learning course is used to improve the overall level of air management knowledge of Rio Tinto?s environment managers.

"The fortunes of mining companies and their implied value are tied to cycles - both economic and commodity – within which they operate. Hence the determination of appropriate future metal prices is one of the most critical factors faced by mineral valuators especially for advanced projects. Price, and hence revenue, is usually the most sensitive input to the valuation model. Empirical studies of past forecasts show that the success rate for commodity price forecasting is very poor. This paper explores various approaches and comments on their strengths and weaknesses. We conclude that careful evaluation of long-term metal prices is a key element and is hardly a luxury that can be left to simple averages or rules of thumb. INTRODUCTION Discounted Cash Flow (""DCF"") analysis, is well suited for the valuation of advanced mineral development assets, for which there are identified mineral resources and some form of economic assessment (Pre-Feasibility or Feasibility Study). The DCF method is also the most commonly used method for determining value for such assets. It provides a means of relating the magnitude of expected future cash flows from profits (or losses) to the magnitude of the initial cash flow (investment) needed for capital expenditures to purchase or to develop an asset for commercial production. The method proves useful in making investment decisions as it allows for the quantification of the Net Present Value (“NPV”), as well as the Internal Rate of Return (IRR) and Payback Period on initial investment capital. Valuation by its very nature is a forward-looking exercise. The DCF method attempts to estimate the NPV of expected future cash flows, by selecting factors that will likely affect future cash flow based on informed analysis. One of the most critical and sensitive factors is the determination of appropriate future commodity prices. “The variables that have the greatest impact on a DCF evaluation are the reserves, the metal prices, and the discount rate.”1 The determination of future commodity prices for valuation purpose or during M&A negotiations is a hotly contested issue. There are a number of analysts, institutions and specialized commercial data suppliers that provide both short and long-term commodities price forecasts. Also, the use of an aggregated mean for all available forecasts, or consensus forecasted prices for valuation purposes is not uncommon. The methods used in making forecasts for each forecaster may vary and in many cases may not be publically disclosed. Nonetheless, the aggregated mean of all forecasted commodity prices of reputed institutions is usually taken to “represent the market’s view of likely future commodity prices.”"

Global mining company achieves significant productivity gains with three-dimensional (3D) mine models developed with Abaqus finite element analysis software. In a steep change beyond traditional processes, Abaqus finite element analysis (FEA) software from Simulia (the Dassault Systèmes? brand for realistic simulation), is being used to enhance mine design and engineering simulation at a number of major mines around the world. In North and South America, Africa and Australia some of the world?s biggest mining companies are applying FEA technology to evaluate safety and improve design planning, implementation and operations. Beck Arndt Engineering (BAE), a Sydney-based international consultancy, is a pioneer in the commercial development of engineering solutions for the mining industry. The consultancy has worked closely with engineers at Simulia Australia to expand the use of Abaqus FEA simulation software for mining applications. Among the early adoptors of mine-ready FEA technology is the world?s largest miner, BHP Billiton. With BAE?s help, BHP has already applied this technology to evaluate mines in Canada and Australia. At the BHP Billiton Nickel West Perserverance Deeps Project in Western Australia, Abaqus FEA software is now being used to help engineer the safety and productivity of planned deep-mining operations. To achieve this goal in the deep-mining environment significant technological innovation is required. Using measurements of site deformation and seismicity, Abaqus FEA models have been calibrated and, in a single day, used to simulate a full, 3D, inelastic analysis of a mine?s life cycle. In recent years, similar applications at Debswana?s Jwaneng Mine in Botswana, the Newcrest Mining Ridge-way Deeps Project in New South Wales, Australia and Rio Tinto?s Argyle Diamond mine in Western Australia have also established Abaqus FEA analysis as the lead-ing technology for multi scale, simulation-aided mining engineering. Joop Nagtegaal, a pioneer of FEA and a Dassault Systèmes Corporate Fellow, said that Abaqus FEA software is unique in its capabilities to enable mining engineers to investigate design innovations from the drawing board to full production. ?In the design stage, Abaqus models, which include rockmass volumes spanning several kilo-meters around the ore body and down to excavations just a few meters across, are used to compare and optimize engineering options,? Nagtegaal said. ?Then, as the mine goes into production, large volumes of data from the field are incorporated with the analysis models to allow them to be calibrated to a precision not previously available to the mining industry.?

On Nov. 4, 1981 the newly installed 1000tph wet-process iron-ore ball mill of A/S Sydvaranger completed its first four months of uninterrupted, successful full-load operation in Kirkenes/Norway. This 6.5m diameter mill is driven by a gearless ring or wrap-around motor of 8100kW at 13.1RPM - a first of a kind in this segment of industry. (Fig. 1) This paper analyses the reasons that have led to the selection of this type of drive over more conventional schemes, lists specific advantages of such large mills, and describes in some detail the installation in Norway. General aspects of possible design variations, and application information for designers and users of such mills conclude the presentation.

Where raw coal from a mine is treated in dense medium separators ash in the washed product is generally very consistent, provided control of the medium suspension is maintained at a given specific gravity. When, however, the washing process is a Baum jig or other similar apparatus, making a separation at rather arbitrary gravities, the control of the product ash is less accurate, particularly in those cases where the design capacity of the washbox is exceeded by the load of high ash fines. In either of these cases an instantaneous measurement of ash while not essential would be desirable, to check the quality of the washed product and provide operator or management with instantaneous warning of changes in ash. Nearly 60% of all British coal mined goes for electricity generation, to burn at 17% ash, and since the overall average ash content of raw coal as mined is about 30% and varies within a range of 18 ? 40%, incombustible material has to be removed. The ash specification could be met either by total washing, or by washing part and blending the clean coal produced with the remaining untreated coal. Some plants use a straight tonnage split, but generally speaking in Britain it has been found more economical to screen and wash the oversize only. In either case for effective quality control in blending an instantaneous determination of the ash content of the product as it is made has been found essential, since standard ash determination by pyrolysis methods is lengthy and provides information too late to be used in the control of plants blending at the rate of 1000 ton/h.

A significant news item appearing in a coal mining journal in November 1969 stated simply that a Caterpillar D-333-CNA engine had received Bureau of Mines Schedule 31 approval. This item occurring at the time a new mining property in Martin County of East Kentucky was being prospected and prepared for mining, resulted in the manage-ment of Martin County Coal Corporation asking the question, "Why not use diesel equipment in our new operation?" Martin County Coal Corporation is part of the A. T. Massey Coal Company, Incorporated organization. The property being developed is on a 17,500 acre leasehold obtained from Pocahontas Land Corporation and lies in the Wolf Creek area of Martin County. The Norfolk and Western Railway Company built a 24-mile railroad into this undeveloped section of Kentucky to tap a huge reserve of steam coal. Duke Power Company is the customer who will take all of the production from Martin County Coal Corporation mines which ultimately is projected to be 2,000,000 tons annually. Four coal seams, all above drainage, are included in the lease. The Middle Coalburg and Stockton are being deep mined now and it is in those mines that the diesel haulage equipment was introduced. This paper will endeavor to trace the steps loading to the introduction of the first diesel-powered Wagner Mining Equipment Company ScoopTram in a coal mine in America. It will further elaborate on the features which make this unit a very versatile and useful utility unit as well as the safety features which are incorporated in the machine. Introduction The economics of open-pit mining de¬pend heavily on the cost of overburden removal. It is necessary to maintain a pit slope as steep as possible. Steeper slopes lower the volume of overburden to be handled, thus lower the cost of material handling. There is, however, a limit to which the pit slopes in any given situation can be steepened. Steepening beyond this point could jeopardize the pitwall stability, ren¬dering it unsafe. It might even result in curtailment of pit production. Several factors affect the stability of pitwalls. Some are natural, such as topogra¬phy and regional and local geology. Others are man made, such as pit geometry, ground water management, equipment, drilling and blasting, and the type of excavation. Greater control can be exercised in the latter with proper planning and by following a set of procedures based on field experiences. This article deals with one such control¬lable factor - drilling and blasting. The eco¬nomics of steeper pit slopes is discussed, followed by a record of drilling and blasting practices in western Canadian surface mines. Microprocessor-based instrumentation and its application to blasthole drilling is also described. Economics of steeper pit slopes The economics of steeper pit slopes is not a new issue. It should be reinforced, though, that pit slopes must be as steep as possible to ensure maximum recovery of minerals at a minimum stripping ratio. For operating, economic, and safety reasons, different pit slopes are maintained during different phases of pit development. Figure 1 shows a hypothetical ore body, cylindrical shape, with a radius of 225 m (740 ft) and located 30 m (100 ft) beneath the surface. The mining operations are planned at two different slope angles of 25° and 40°. The ultimate pit depth was established on the basis of the criterion of "break even pit." The variation of the stripping ratio at differ¬ent mine levels is shown in Fig. 2. Table I summarizes the eco¬nomics involved for two pit slopes, 25° and 40°. Figure 3 presents the profits during the life of the mine for these two pit slopes. This study shows that steeper slopes for an open pit operation are far more advanta¬geous than flatter slopes. But, what is the optimum slope at any one point in the life of a moving pit? And how can the stable slopes be maintained over the short- and long-term? Canadian blasting practices A survey of blasting practices in western Canadian surface coal mines revealed that, at most mines, hard consolidated overburden is drilled and blasted. Blastholes are drilled with rotary crawler-¬mounted rigs using bits in the 220 to 310 mm-diam (8.5 to 12 in.-diam) range. Typi¬cal hole depths are 12 to 18 m (40 to 60 ft) to accommodate the pit bench heights of 12 to 15 m (40 to 50 ft). For a 12-m (40-ft) high bench, a typical hole will be 14.6 m (48 ft) deep including the subgrade drilling of 2.6 m (8.5 ft). Half of this hole will typically be a powder column and half will be stemmed. For a 15-m (50-ft) bench, a typical hole will be up to 18 m (66 ft) deep including the subgrade drilling. Drilling patterns are usually 9 m (29.5 ft) spacing and 9 m (29.5 ft) burden. De¬pending on local geology and hole diameter selected, drilling patterns of 8 x 8 m, 8.5 x 7.3 m, and staggered patterns of 11 x 5.5 m

The impact of fatigue is seen not only in its effect on the job performance of haul truck operators but also on the health of the operator and the productivity at the mine site. Its impact can even extend outside of the mine site to the health and well-being of the surrounding community (Fourie et al., 2010). In this paper, a case study of a small, surface mining organization is presented. The goal is to highlight the fatigue risk management system implemented at the studied mine site. Mine safety personnel who were interviewed discuss the changes made to the infrastructure of the mine, to administrative areas such as the number of shifts and the use of vacation time, as well as the implementation of new technology into haulage vehicles. This paper reviews how these changes are supported in the research literature.

An overview over SAM’s approach to assess corporate sustainability performance illustrates how sustainability challenges are linked to trends, assessment criteria and finally company performance. This process is exemplified with some general and industry specific criteria. Lastly, results of the Dow Jones Sustainability Assessment 2004 show a considerable gap between leading and average companies. Best practice examples demonstrate how lagging companies could improve their sustainability performance.

Based on the mine safety and health administration (MSHA)reports, mining truck accidents are among the significant causes of fatalities in the mining industry. The major causes of haulage accidents can be divided into non-driving and driving factors, such as truck-related sudden failures and operator performance. Numerous parameters affect trucks' safe operation, but situational awareness plays a significant role. Due to the distinct structure of mining trucks, making them efficient for mining purposes, the operator has a very limited field of view (FOV), making them prone to accidents resulting in losing lives. The cabin's position blocks the truck's right and rear sides, creating several blind points around it. Aiming to test/train the operator's awareness of the surrounding, a proximity detection system is developed through a multiplayer virtual reality (VR) application to investigate the human factor in equipment collisions. The operators were examined and monitored when asked to conduct what exactly happened in the Marigold mine truck accident without being aware of the scenario. After receiving sound, vibration, and visual alarm warnings, their reaction and performance were analyzed. The platform is developed using the Unity game engine for HTC VIVE virtual reality goggles. An Omni-direction treadmill and a motion simulator platform are utilized for the player and dump truck operators. Fifteen students were monitored when driving the dump truck receiving/not receiving proximity detection alarms. None of them repeated the accident when receiving proximity alarms. Also, they found the visual alarm the most comfortable while driving the truck.

"In the 1990’s metal prices were trending in a long term decline and the usual cost cutting exercises were adopted. Cuts to research and development made innovation difficult and the outlook was grim. But necessity is a strong motivator, and these conditions spurred the Mine-to-Mill movement which optimised across organisational “silos” and utilising new technology tools, innovative software and increased computing power. Many applications of Mine-to-Mill exploited the fact that comminution is usually the site processing bottleneck, and that blasting is more efficient at breaking rock than grinding. This approach sought to: • Understand and characterise rock breakage from mining to the mill • Develop models and simulators for blast design, fragmentation, crusher and mill circuits • Develop tools to measure in real time the particle size distribution of rocks on conveyors and Run of Mine (ROM) muckpiles • Ensure effective communication across the silos between geologists, blast design engineers, mining engineers and metallurgists These methods and the technology tools available in the 1990s were widely adopted at numerous sites around the world with significant benefits. SAG mill throughput increases of 10-20% were common. This was the advance the industry desperately needed. It was low capital cost; it was obvious. It was here to stay. Except, in too many cases, it didn’t. In the minerals price boom of the 2000’s Mine-to-Mill was no longer necessary to “survive”, even though it was still good business. Some operations, including some of the early success stories, slipped back to old habits of optimising within organisation silos instead of across them. Fortunately, other operators still embraced Mine-to-Mill and developed new techniques. Mine to Mill was still successful, but it not as widely adopted as we had expected it to be.Now the boom has ended and operations are again under cost pressure. Since these are the same circumstances that created Mine-to-Mill, it seems time to achieve the wider adoption. Since the 1990s many new or advanced technology tools are available for Mine-to-Mill projects: blast-hole sensors, new explosives formulations, new blasting techniques and modelling, ore tracking devices, improved image analysis to determine size, texture and colour of coarse ore, grade sensors, whole-stream simulation tools, even more powerful computing hardware and data analysis software. If we could achieve so much in the 1990’s, how much more can we achieve today when we have the same imperative, the same potential and a larger number of high technology tools?"

There are many aspects of a grinding mill supply and installation that can result in the mill not operating as intended, resulting in unplanned shutdowns, poor reliability and headaches for all concerned. One of the largest aspects, both in criticality and physical mass, is the mill foundation; if not properly specified, designed and constructed the mill operation will be compromised. The mill foundation starts with the design specification and loading diagram supplied by the mill builder. The importance of understanding these documents and how to apply them is critical for the start of any mill project. When designing mills with a GMD the foundation must be properly modeled to ensure that all interactions of the mill and motor structures, foundation and subsurface strata behave in the intended fashion. All of the previous efforts can be laid to waste if the construction of the mill foundation is poorly handled. Mill foundations are typically the most massive concrete structure at a processing plant and can easily cause nightmares for inexperienced contactors. This paper explores some of the more important facets along the lifecycle of the grinding mill foundation.
