It is prudent to interpret atmospheric monitoring signals in real time for checking the safe limits of the air conditions in underground mines. In gassy mines, real-time evaluation increases the safety of operations. In all mines, continuous monitoring and evaluation contributes to maintaining air conditions within healthy and safe limits. Signal interpretation for safety conditions in mines is difficult for many reasons. An increase in hazardous contaminant concentrations can be predicted by signal pattern recognition, root cause analysis of rapid changes toward deterioration, and forward prediction in time using algorithms and numerical models. The paper describes an early warning system for analyzing monitored signal patterns continuously in real time as well as forward predicting the various environmental and working conditions to recognize dangerous trends that may affect safety and health in underground mines. A dynamic, numerical ventilation model with heat and gas contaminant simulation components is used for the analysis of atmospheric data. Methods and test results are discussed with numerical examples for signal propagation prediction. Several mine examples are studied using controlled, synthetic data for malfunction simulations to evaluate time delays between the detection time of suspicious signal trends and the time of dangerous threshold crossing marking an accident scenario. Delay time is found in the order of 20 min in the examples, signifying the useful time period for preventive intervention between EWS warning and the likely breakout of a following accident.

The drive selected for any piece of machinery must adequately satisfy the application requirements both during the starting interval and at running conditions, All loading possibilities of the drive must be known and allowances made for any adverse limiting conditions such as extreme cold, or perhaps an intermittent excessive loading situation etc. In general, the drive must be selected to provide the required operating characteristics with maximum reliability and at minimum cost. Simplicity of overall design is always an advantage and care must be exercised to insure that systems incorporating unnecessary complicated parts are not indiscriminantly provided. Important non-technical considerations such as equipment avail-ability (on an overseas project) as well as standardization details also play a role in the drive selection process. Additionally, an assessment of the potential capabilities of the personnel that will have to maintain the equipment can have some influence on the final choice. Several types of prime movers are available but this article will restrict itself to the use of induction motors operating from an available alternating current power source. Many drive arrangements are possible, the most common being the direct coupled single motor arrangement. In 1958, the coal industry, through Bituminous Coal Research, Inc., and the electric utility industry, through the Edison Electric Institute and the Association of Edison Illuminating Companies, initiated a joint program to study coal pyrite and its removal as a means of lowering the sulfur content of steam coals. It was assumed that significant amounts of pyrite often remained in washed steam coal not because available systems for coal cleaning were inadequate, but because the pyrite was small and widely disseminated, During the first two years, samples of coal were examined petrographically to determine the size, association, and mode of occurrence of the pyrite in the raw coal and in the products of laboratory separation, Samples of coal were also pulverized in different equipment to determine how effectively pyrite was released by pulverization and if the mode of pulverization affected the liberation of pyrite. From these studies, the following tentative conclusions were made (1 ): 1. Much of the coal pyrite is within a 250-70 micron size range, and therefore is too small to be removed by conventional coal cleaning, but relatively large when compared to the size of coal as pulverized for combustion in large boilers. 2. The degree of pyrite liberation is mainly determined by the size of the product and not by the type of crusher. 3. For improved pyrite removal, the coal should be cleaned during or after pulverization at the power station.

In surface mining for coal, common practice for the disposal of preparation plant refuse is to bury it. As with surface refuse piles, these buried wastes can ignite and can also lead to ground and surface water pollution. Steps to ameliorate these problems have been devised over the years. C and K Coal Company, of Clarion, Pa., the largest Pennsylvania surface mining company, has incorporated all of these steps and added of few, of their own in their latest disposal practice. In addition to layering and compacting, C and K practices selective placement and dilution to minimize longterm problems.

Grinding with an electrochemically inert grinding media (i.e., high chrome white iron) shifts the pulp potentials to more oxidising conditions, increases the dissolved oxygen content and reduces the EDTA extractable iron concentration when compared with milling with electrochemically active grinding media (forged steel). These changes in pulp chemistry produce cleaner particle surfaces, reduce reagent consumption, and increase concentrate grades and recoveries. This paper presents a robust laboratory test program that not only demonstrates the changes in the pulp chemistry, but also provide an indication of the magnitude of the metallurgical improvements that are possible. While laboratory studies are interesting, the proof is in the pudding! So, the paper provides an overview of plant trials conducted at several porphyry copper operations around the world: Newmont’s Cadia and Red Chris Operations, as well as Evolution Mining’s Northparkes Operation. These successful plant trials clearly demonstrate that selection of the right grinding media alloy will yield savings in grinding media consumption and reagent consumption as well as increases in revenue through improved copper and gold recoveries. However, many of the porphyry copper mines on the Eastern Pacific are copper-molybdenum deposits. The paper presents laboratory test results for typical copper-molybdenum operations and extrapolate these numbers to what might be expected should a plant trial occur.

Water-powered jackleg rock drills, introduced recently in South African mines are reported to be more efficient, faster and more comfortable to operate than conventional pneumatic drills. A comparative testing of both drill types was performed in Quebec. Based on its results and time studies done in the mines, water-powered drilling has been reviewed with regards to drilling rates achieved, infrastructure needed, side effects, health and safety considerations. This study shows that the application of water-powered drills may help increase footage drilled and improve working environment, but under specific conditions. The examples of such applications are given in the conclusions.

Regulation of mineral property valuation methodology by governments and others is due to frauds, condemnation and takings, banking industry problems, and litigation. Definitions of "reserves," "resources," and "qualified person" continue to evolve, along with guidelines to the data and disclosure required to support valuations. A less recognized but vital issue relates to the regulatory acceptability of alternatives to the comparable sales method. Comparable sales generally work well for surface real estate, and sometimes for precious metal deposits, but not at all for most industrial mineral properties. Alternative methods, such as net present value, or a geoscience rating system, often provide better valuations. Yet US regulations dictate comparable sales as the preferred method. The task of convincing regulators of the inapplicability of comparable sales to mineral properties, particularly those lacking reserves, may be as important as the valuation itself.

Advantages of this equipment The ever increasing demand for bulk materials such as ore, coal, lignite, oilsand, oilshale and bauxite requires mainly an opencast operation. To exploit these materials huge amounts of overburden and partings must be transportes by means of conveyors, trucks or trains. When analyzing the various opencast mines it can be established that there exist only two basic types of mining systems, i. e., the discontinuous strip mining system as used in the USA (Fig. 1) and the continuous mining system as is commonly applied in Europe. The reason why these two mining methods have been developed parallel to and independently of each other to such a high technical standard results from the varying geological conditions of the mineral deposits.

The responsible treatment of natural resources, including mineral raw materials, contributes to the protection of the environment. The management of resources and the environment encompasses reduction of emission through application of environmentally friendly processes, economical use of resources, recycling and substitution, application of energy saving processes, land reclamation and recultivation, as well as a well balanced regional and land use planning. A variety of materials are needed for measures to protect the environment. Many of these materials are, or to a large percentage consist of, mineral raw materials, which become effective either directly or indirectly in their natural state or after an appropriate industrial treatment. We call them environmental minerals. Although extraction and processing of these mineral raw materials destined for use in the protection of the environment, may have a negative impact on the environment on one hand, preventive or curing measures to protect the environment on the other would not be possible without them. We have to accept certain smaller burdens of the environment, which naturally will have to be kept at the lowest possible level, in order to avoid or minimize greater damages to nature. In the broad group of industrial minerals and rocks there is a wide variety of mineral raw materials, which lend themselves for countermeasures in favor of the environment. To hamper their production and processing through excessive environmental regulations would make the protection of the very environment more difficult or even impossible.

An underground limestone mine in eastern Ohio was experiencing significant floor heave and roof falls, attributed to high horizontal stresses. Areas of the mine showing floor heave were monitored with roof-to-floor extensometers and photogrammetry surveys to determine the rate and magnitude of heave. Extensometer data were recorded hourly at four locations across adjacent entries while photogrammetry surveys of the floor were performed at the same locations every two to five weeks. A final survey was performed using an I-Site 8200 laser scanner. Following instrumentation, floor heave up to 10.1 cm (4 in.) was measured by the extensometers, photogrammetric reconstructions and laser scanner over a six-month period. The extensometers were biased by the location where they were placed, failing to consistently capture the location and extent of floor heave and cracking. The photogrammetry surveys were not precise enough to capture small magnitude movements. Mining in the area was halted and within several months the floor movement and incidence of roof falls were significantly lessened.

Flotation of rutile with N-benzoyl-N-phenyl-hydroxylamine (N-BPHA) has been investigated. Initially, floatability tests were performed in a Hallimond tube. The results indicated that rutile was floatable in the pH range from 2 to 4 at N-BPHA concentration between 2x10-3 M and 2x10-2 M. Selectivity against hematite was recognized when operating at pH values below 2. Following the hypothesis of the formation of a surface chelate between N-BPHA and titanium ion, this compound was precipitated from a solution of Ti(SO4) to which N-BPHA was added. I.R. spectrometry oft the rutile before and after treatment with N-BPHA solution confirmed the presence on the rutile surface of the same compound. The absorption isotherm and kinetics were determined by analyzing N-BPHA in solution with an U.V. technique. A hypothesis for the mechanism of adsorption of N-BPHA on rutile is suggested.

Editor&apos;s note: Minerals concentration is a disparate area, one involving many disciplines. Flotation, flocculation, reagents, microbial processes, gravity and magnetic separation, and the areas of coal and oil shale - concentration is relevant to all of these. In his article, Nagaraj reviews the latest developments and findings in concentration that have ocurred during the past year. Flotation The Monograph Series "Development in Mineral Processing," (Elsevier, 1985) was devoted to "Flotation of Sulfide Minerals." This volume has 26 articles covering the aspects of flotation chemistry, process development, plant design and equipment, and modeling and process control. The numerous articles on sulfide flotation had one recurring theme - the role of electrochemical processes and redox potentials in flotation and depression. Significant advances have been made in this area. A differential desorption-reflotation process was developed for the beneficiation of calcitic phosphate pebble (Hsieh and Lehr, Industrial Engineering and Chemistry, 1985). The carbonate and phosphate minerals were first separated from silica using fatty acid and the modifiers diphosphonic acid and HF. The collector on phosphate was then desorbed using sulfuric acid, and calcite was selectively floated without additional collector. A two-stage conditioning - initially at pH 10, followed by that at pH < 4.5 - with sodium oleate was developed to improve the separation between apatite and dolomite (Moudgil and Chanchani, Minerals and Metallurgical Processing, MMP, 1985). Separation of Mussorie rock phosphate in India from gangue calcite, dolomite, silicates, pyrite, and carbonaceous impurities was achieved with a three-stage flotation only on -75 µm (-200 mesh) fraction (Vaman Rao et al., International Journal of Mineral Processing, IJMP, 1985). The separation of fine SiC whiskers from other products of coked rice hulls by immiscible liquid and froth flotation was achieved using M1BC, pine oil, and mineral spirits (Parekh and Goldberger, MMP, 1985). Flotation was more economical. The carrier flotation separation of hematite fines from quartz fines was effected using coarse hematite as a carrier and oleic acid and ferric chloride (Cristoveanu and Meech, CIM Bulletin, 1985). Potash recovery from brines by laboratory-pan solar evaporation and amine flotation was discussed by Foot and Juiatt (Salts and Brines &apos;85, Proceedings, 1985). Flotation in a 45-kg/h (99-lb per hour) unit recovered more than 95% of the potash in schoenite and sylvite concentrates containing 28% and 62% K2O, respectively. The effects of fresh concrete into cement and aggregate by a single-step flotation process in aqueous suspension was described (Naegle, Chemical Engineering Science, 1985). The physico-chemical principles for the selective separation of proteins from mixtures using flotation were discussed by Ostermaier and Dobias (Colloids & Surfactants, 1985). Selective flocculation of hematite from silica was studied by Bagster and Mcllvenny (IJMP, 1985). Selective flocculation was more favorable with more highly charged anionic polyacrylamides and with high molecular weight. The cationic and non-ionic polymers flocculated both minerals. In minerals mixtures, there appeared to be very little selectivity unless a combination of dispersant and electrolyte was used. The effect of dissolved minerals species, such as Cu, Fe, and Ni on flocculation of chalcopyrite, pentlandite, millerite, pyrrhotite, and covellite was studied by Acar and Somasundaran (SME-AIME, 1985). Reagents There were some major advances made in reagent development for the minerals processing industry. Cyanamid introduced several classes of collectors, one of which - the diaryl monothiophosphates as acid circuit col¬lectors of sulfides and oxidesulfide ores - was commercialized in 1985. The monothiophosphates are more stable and powerful collectors than the xanthates and dithiophosphates. Hydrolyzed dithiophosphate containing 80% monothio and 20% dithiophosphate was found to give optimum recovery of copper from crude cementation precipitate and separation of Cu and Ni sulfides from matte (Akimova et al., Obogashch, Tonkov, Rud, OTR, 1985). The Forestry Reclamation Approach (FRA) recommends that the upper 1.22 m (4 ft) of spoil material on reclaimed surfaces should be left as uncompacted as possible to facilitate efficient tree root growth. However, the main concerns about applying the FRA to steep slopes is that the upper 1.22 m (4 ft) of loose spoil material could cause instability. Successful application of the FRA on the flat and rolling surfaces precipitated this investigation. Details of a field investigation conducted at a steep-slope mine site are available in an earlier publication (Kumar and Sweigard, 2011). A total of 70 survey monuments were driven into the slope in a regular pattern to monitor any type of slope movement. Quarterly surveying of the monuments were done to quantify slope movement, either horizontally or vertically. The methodology developed in this research for field slope movement monitoring was validated using computer model results. Analytical models based on the limit equilibrium method (LEM) and numerical models based on the finite element method (FEM) were developed for slope stability analysis. The LEM analysis was done using the Geo-Slope/W program following the simplified Bishop method. However, numerical models were developed using the PLAXIS computer program following the Mohr’s Coulomb failure criterion and strength reduction technique. The slope stability analysis was performed for two different scenarios: first with the top 1.22 m (4 ft) of loose graded spoil material and second without top loose graded spoil material. Finally, the field investigation results were compared with stability analysis results. Both of these approaches showed that application of the FRA on steep slopes is not causing any significant instability problems, due to 1.22 m (4 ft) loose graded spoil that would not exist otherwise for overly steepened slopes.

"Civil design has changed in many ways using BIM (Building Information Modelling) technology in its most recent form. Such a technological breakthrough has not been successful so far in traditional oriented Engineering Geology, except in the Mining and oil exploration markets with budgets on much different scales. The fact is that paper, pencil and hand drawn sketches are still state of the art and a perfectly acceptable way of producing subjective geological interpretations.Using the technology available, we have developed a set of procedures and techniques to combine the latest surveying and remote sensing technology, GIS based tools to manage large data sets and BIM modelling techniques in a 3D geological environment.To demonstrate the concept, the forthcoming Karavanke tunnel project (Slovenia) has been chosen for testing techniques. The project, with its rich documentation from previous phases and new data available, represented a good basis for testing the possibility of digitizing geological data while communicating with Leapfrog Geo 3D modelling algorithms. This type of procedure would then allow engineers at the construction site to use the 3D model for prognosis and evaluation, while upgrading it daily with new information.INTRODUCTIONThe Karavanke tunnel crosses the mountain range on the border between Slovenia and Austria. As the geology is very complex due to its imbricate fan structure, a series of geological – geotechnical and hydrogeological investigations have been performed since the 1970s, resulting in extensive project documentation. The construction of the 7864 m long single-tube two-lane tunnel took place in the late 1980s. Currently, the tunnel represents a critical point on Pan-European Transport Corridor X (Salzburg, Austria – Thessaloniki, Greece), with insufficient safety measures. The need for improved traffic flow and enhanced road safety led the Slovenian government in 2013 to a decision to continue with activities regarding the construction of the second tunnel tube 70 m east of the existing tunnel.The extensive project documentation from previous investigation phases and construction of a new tunnel tube presented a good base for a pilot project, in order to test the emerging new technologies for data acquisition, processing and analysis in a 3D environment. Several products are available on the market for data acquisition and 3D geological modelling, but only a few can be applied in the civil design, as well. Developing a standard format and procedure for implementing the 3D geological model using new remote sensing techniques, 3D geological modelling tools, such as Leapfrog Geo and BIM (Building Information Modelling) modelling techniques would move the Engineering Geology, Geotechnics and Tunneling to a more advanced level. 3D modelling tools would therefore not only be used as a visualization tool, but would also contribute to in a more efficient communication and workflow between the professionals involved in the project."

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are being explored by researchers to measure concentrations of gas emissions in situations where such measurements are otherwise extremely difficult to obtain, such as NO and NO2 (NOx) emissions from surface mine blasting. Recently, countries have imposed or are planning to impose surface blasting gas pollution regulations, which creates a need for an improved understanding of UAV-based gas measuring systems. The experiments detailed in this paper were performed to determine if airflow generated by the rotors, also known as downwash, unnaturally alters concentration measurements. Downwash turbulence could create locations of varying pressure, which could affect concentration. A UAV fitted with gas sensors was attached to a stand in a controlled environment containing a mixture of NOx. The gas sensor measuring points were placed at various distances on and from the UAV body to evaluate downwash effects on gas concentration. Results show that the presence of downwash turbulence causes no statistically significant changes to concentration measurements at any distance or direction from the UAV. Based on these results, it is possible to use a UAV-mounted gas monitor to measure concentrations without concern for downwash interference, provided the UAV and measuring point are entirely contained within the gas cloud.

Reduction in the recovery time required and improvements in safety during a longwall face move have compelled coal mine operators to examine and use pre-driven longwall recovery rooms. The recovery entry is developed at the longwall stop position and supported ahead of time so that the required combinations of standing and internal sup-ports can be installed before the longwall face approaches. A calibrated three-dimensional finite element model, developed in conjunction with an underground test area, provided the critical components and design principals for a comprehensive parametric study. The study indicates that vertical, horizontal, and shear stresses concentrated on the outby abutment pillar corner of the recovery room resulting in deformations in the immediate roof above the primary roof support anchorage level. The results of the numerical model and field site observations indicated that the combination of the internal bolting system and the standing concrete supports are critical for the successful and safe extraction of the longwall equipment. Cable supports installed at and angle over the pillars can help stabilize the disturbed zone above the adjacent fender and outby pillars, however; standing supports are required in most sedimentary roof conditions to increase stability and assure a safe longwall extraction.

"By the end of the 1950s, the German hard coal mining industry produced 150 million tons of hard coal per year in 170 collieries with 600,000 employees. At that time, 70% of the primary energy demand of the Federal Republic of Germany was covered by domestic coal. However, due to coal mining becoming an increasingly globalized business and the oil and gas industry producing with lower costs, the German domestic hard coal industry stood constantly under restructur-ing pressure. The industry declined until the end of its life cycle. In 2007, a political understanding was arranged to phase out German hard coal mining in a socially acceptable manner by the end of 2018. This decision required a new strategy for the coal mining industry. Being strictly finalized, the German hard coal mining industry has to be prepared for the post-mining era. To create a sustainable development strategy, the long-term impacts of coal mining activities in Germany concerning the environmental, economic and social dimensions will be analyzed systematically and forward-looking. The regional and social responsibility during the closing process and for the post-mining era will be emphasized. High technical standards in environmental protec-tion and post-mining technologies, as well as long term experiences in the development of former mine sites to create new jobs are significant from an international point of view. The traditionally constructive social partnership between employers, union, and employees has enabled long-term stable adaption processes and avoided social friction. The sustainability strategy of the German hard coal mining industry can be regarded as a role model for other mining countries and regions facing similar transition challenges. INTRODUCTION Principally, mining is a finite business that reaches its end if the deposits are depleted or the raw materials can no longer be mined in an economically profitable way. However, the impact of mining is po-tentially an infinite one – at least if you measure it at a human time scale. Mining always means interfering with geological and ecological structures that cannot be reversed to their original condition. In general, the mining cycle (Figure 1) can be divided into three phases: 1. The exploration phase, in which the deposit is investigated to determine its technical and economic profitability. The period of these undertakings is relatively short and can lead to the launch of mining operations. 2. What follows is the actual mining phase which usually lasts for a long time and ends latest when all deposits are fully depleted. This lifespan may be shortened if the economic conditions (production cost or market price) deteriorate. Nevertheless, mining may be resumed if those conditions become favorable once more (examples are silver mining in Germany or rare earths mining in the USA). 3. The longest phase, however, is the post-mining phase as the human interference into geology and nature is usually inten-sive and irreversible. Mining can lead to consequences which have a permanently adverse impact on people and the environment; therefore, they have to be managed as best we can (1)."

Regional characteristics in the coal resource base have resulted in application of different mining methods across Canada. Longwall methods predominate in eastern Canada, whereas open pit, hydraulic and room-and-pillar methods are utilized in the west. Both provincial and federal agencies have regulatory responsibilities and both also share in the development of R&D programs. This paper outlines the scale and scope of the various agencies involved with health and safety R&D in our expanding coal mining industry. Specific R&D activities in ventilation, dust control, explosion hazards, tunnel boring, strata control and truck braking, which form part of the national program, are outlined.

Iran possesses very large copper resources, estimated to contain around 4-5% of the world&apos;s known copper inventory. There are several small private sector copper mining operating in the country, but Iran&apos;s copper industry is dominated by the state-owned National Iranian Copper Industries Company, which operates the world-class Sar-Cheshmeh open-pit Mine. This mine was developed in 1970s before the 1979 Islamic Revelation by the Atlantic Richfield Company (ARCO), the former Anaconda Copper Mining Company. Current Iran?s copper cathode production is about 250,000 mtpa and recently it is targeted to reach to 700.000 t by 2014. The required finance for this target is estimated US $2.25 -b, i.e. US $5000 for each tonne capacity. The copper content of the mineable reserves of the country is estimated about 19 Mt. It is not unlikely this amount increases in close future. Currently, almost 30 projects consist of mine, concentrator, smelter, refinery, acid plant, leaching, bio-leaching are underway. These projects are a golden opportunity for the local and foreign companies, but the recent sanctions are very challenging that all studied in this paper.
