Development of the Batu Hijau Project was successfully completed in the fourth quarter of 1999 with the final handover and start-up of ore processing facilities. The development project had started more than three years earlier, in August 1996, when the Owner, PT. Newmont Nusa Tenggara (PTNNT), awarded an EPC contract to Fluor Daniel (FD) for design and construction of the project including: copper concentrator, port, power plant, town site, and infrastructure. PTNNT managed the development of the mine and procurement of mine equipment with its own forces. Bringing the Batu Hijau copper deposit into production was the largest mining project ever undertaken. Development of Batu Hijau was a complex project involving the work of tens of thousands of people in all parts of the world to complete engineering, manufacture and deliver equipment, supply materials, and build the plant. The ore deposit is located on the tropical island of Sumbawa in a remote and undeveloped section of Indonesia. The location and environment presented challenges for all phases and aspects of the project. To meet the challenges, the project team combined good planning and teamwork to best utilize the resources available. This approach assured continuity of personnel through construction to operations and minimized cost, resulting in completion of the project ahead of schedule and under budget.

The former Homestake gold mine at Lead, South Dakota, has been selected by the National Science Foundation as the proposed host site for the Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory. The deep laboratory and associated research campus will be developed at approximately the 7700-ft level. Plans also include the development of the Sanford Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory at the 4850-ft level. After the mine?s pumps were shut off in June, 2003, water levels rose to approximately the 4650-ft level by early 2008. Pumps in the 8150-ft deep mine were turned on again for dewatering in April, 2008. Instrumentation is being installed in the mine to measure water-level declines during pumping, for later analysis of permeability and related hydraulic properties of the formation. Pressure-sensitive transducers and data loggers will provide real-time information on water levels that will be available to interested parties. Quality of the water also will be monitored as it is pumped from the mine. I

The collection of hydrophobic particles in the froth phase in flotation has been studied. A continuous flotation cell was developed, in which the froth phase could be isolated from the pulp zone. Hematite particles, d80 = 87 µm, were floated in the pulp, using a conventional oleate collector, while glass spheres of similar diameter, d80 = 82 µm, were introduced in wash water added to the froth. Four samples of glass spheres, with contact angles between 0 and 82 degrees, were used. The results indicate that the efficiency of collection of the hydrophobic particles in the froth can be very high. The process is strongly influenced by the hydrophobicity of the particles and the surface area available for attachment in the froth. Recommendations for the flotation of particles in the froth phase are made, especially regarding the desirable hydrophobicity as reflected in the contact angle, the froth depth, the solids concentration in the feed to the froth, the air rate and the wash water rate.

Recently developed clay deposits that will impact regional and world markets are described. These deposits, their location, geology, and physical properties are delineated. Kaolins from the State of Para in Brazil and from Ukraine; bentonites from Argentina and India; and palygorskite and sepiolite from China are world class deposits that when processed using modem technology will produce excellent products. Other deposits that may affect regional markets are kaolins from China, Australia and Indonesia; bentonites from Georgia (formerly USSR) and China; and palygorskite from India and Ukraine. New ball clay deposits that will affect regional markets are in China and Indonesia.

Variable frequency drives (VFD’s), or adjustable frequency controls (AFC’s) as they are more precisely identified, have been available to the mining industry for over 20 years. However, in recent years as the push to cut production costs has become ever so crucial, AFC usage has become more widespread. This paper seeks to provide professionals in mineral processing plant design and operation with an introduction to AFC’s, insight as to why AFC control for AC induction motors can be advantageous, and specification and design considerations.

Australia’s Minerals Tertiary Education Council (MTEC) has achieved several successes during its first three years of operation. This initiative was developed through the Minerals Council of Australia, in conjunction with three partner universities involved in mining engineering education. The partner universities are the University of New South Wales (UNSW); Curtin University, the West Australian School of Mines (WASM); and the University of Queensland (UQ). The collaboration between these partner universities and industry has led to the development of shared course material, cross-institutional teaching arrangements, and the development of a number of flexible, distance-based delivery programs. This article then discusses future initiatives. Importantly, the challenge is the future initiative planned to cement this collaboration by the formation of a “virtual” national school of mining engineering: Mining Education Australia (MEA). This will provide a common third and fourth year program to all three universities beginning in 2007. The common program will involve innovative teaching and learning arrangements, greater student exchange potential and a more significant input by industry into the education process.

Newmont Gold Company's Mill No. 4 is located along the Carlin trend, about 25 miles North of Carlin, Nevada. The plant consists of a primary grinding circuit using a 7.2 m (22 ft) diameter by 2.6 m (8 ft) long semi-autogenous mill along with a 2.3 m (7 ft) diameter cone crusher. Secondary grinding is performed in a 4.8 m (14.5 ft) diameter by 9.2 m (28 ft) long overflow ball mill in closed circuit with a set of 66 cm (26 in) diameter cyclones. The ground product is fed to a typical carbon-in-leach gold leach circuit. The grinding/crushing circuit operation and control scheme are the topics of this paper.

The U.S. Geological Survey has conducted an assessment of the Nation’s coal deposits that potentially could be mined during the next 30 or more years. For the Gulf Coastal Plain region, the assessment includes reviews of the stratigraphy, coal quality and resources, and coalbed methane potential of the Cretaceous, Paleocene, and Eocene coal deposits in the region. The results of these efforts are a series of digital maps, text, and tables published in CD-ROM format. Although abundant coal resources are available in the Gulf Coast region, coal quality issues may limit large-scale development in the future. Additional data are required to better evaluate the coalbed methane resource potential for the Gulf Coast region.

The "Service de Protection Technique"of the "Institut de Protection et de Sûreté Nucléaire" was asked by the Commission of European Communities to conduct measurement campaigns which would make it possible to evaluate, on an experimental basis, the collective risk to miners exposed to radon in underground, non-uranium mines located in countries within the European Community. 1. METHODOLOGY USED TO CONDUCT THE CAMPAIGNS This campaign is original in that direct measurements of the individual monthly exposure to potential [a]-energy from short-lived radon daughters are made using personal [a]-dosimeters described previously (1). We call this type of dosimetry "personal dosimetry". The workers who wear the personal [a]-dosimeters were selected taking into account the various categories of workers and their work assignments in the various areas of the mine. Another way of finding out the occupational exposure of these miners consists in making numerous measurements of the radon concentration at the various work places, taking into account the time spent at each place by each worker. This procedure is too complex for an evaluation of the collective risk as requested by the Commission of European Communities and was therefore rejected. Additional data was gathered during these measurements campaigns using the following techniques (table 1). ZETTWOOG The mines were chosen to include a larger variety of types of ore, of geological situations, and of mining methods. 2. RESULTS OF THE RADON DATA-GATHERING CAMPAIGNS 2.1 – [Uranium content of the surrounding rocks and ore] The samples taken during the campaigns make it possible to establish the U content in the rocks of the mines selected. These values, from 2 to 15 ppm, are slightly higher than those usually found (2 to 5 ppm) (table 2). [ ]

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has continued study of the Personal Dust Monitor (PDM) developed by Rupprecht & Patashnick Co. Inc. through a CDC contract and currently being commercialized by Thermo Fisher Scientific. This report examines the effect of oversize particles, cyclone inversion, and cleaning procedures. Clean and exposed filters were examined using light microscopy and particulates counted before and after various instrument manipulations. The data presented show that the dry cleaning procedures do not cause significant (greater than limit of detection) sample contamination by respirable or oversize particulates and that the cyclone is resistant to particulate carry over during inversion.

The IVAR Project is Norway's largest sewer project presently under construction. One part of it is an 8.1 km (26 575 ft) long, 3.5 m (11 ft 6 in.) diam tunnel, bored in one year. The tunneling project has been running smoothly; however, not everything has been easy. A few of its features are highlighted in this paper: The use of 9 0 (12 cu yd) muck cars on a double track back-up in such a comparatively narrow tunnel. Employing only four men in the tunnel, including the loco driver. A quartzite dyke - 96% quartz with 350 MPa (50 000 psi) and more compressive strength - turned out to be 640 m (2 100 ft) thick instead of the predicted 90 m (300 ft). Passing under a gaseous swamp with only same 5 m (16 ft 5 in.) of rock cover on top.

Industrial minerals play a central and dual role in the sustainable development (SD) of natural resources. Over the past decade the mining industry has increasingly focused on sustainably extracting and processing industrial minerals. This trend has been driven by higher energy costs, diminishing water resources and sensitivity towards environmental stewardship. Industrial minerals have been used throughout human history as low cost, naturally occurring, materials. Today they are critical components of recycled packaging, energy efficient building materials, light weight paper coatings, and other products critical to the responsible utilization of global resources. As industrial minerals become more widely used in ?green? products, mining companies have established best practices for the sustainable management of industrial minerals mining and processing. These management practices include reducing energy consumption, minimizing water usage, increasing waste recovery through recycling and process optimization, and maximizing the amount of ore extracted per acre of disturbed land. With the commitment to SD principles, quantitative methods for objectively measuring SD performance have become increasingly important. Measuring sustainability impact is a valuable tool for effectively applying SD principles and for making choices that balance sustainable development against other business objectives. SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT AND MINING Sustainable development is a term that has become a common part of our lexicon; however, it has multiple meanings and interpretations leading to a sometimes confusing and contradictory array of definitions. The absence of a single, precise definition reflects the fact that SD is a broad concept or paradigm that offers guiding principles as opposed to a specific set of criteria or regulations enforceable by government or other oversight agencies. While a principle based conceptual approach allows businesses to broadly apply SD practices that are tailored to their specific situation, it has also led the public to sometimes view voluntary corporate SD programs with a degree of skepticism (Walker and Howard 2002). This is particularly true in the mining industry. One reason for this skepticism is that the relationship between SD and mining is misunderstood and to many, sustainably developing non-renewable mineral resources is a contradiction (Rajaram et al. 2005). However, this view takes a very narrow interpretation of the tenets of SD. The second is that mining carries a legacy of poor environmental stewardship that does not accurately reflect current corporate environmental practices Many minerals companies have adopted the Brundtland Comission?s definition of SD (United Nations 1987): ?? development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs?. This definition is very broad and can be interpreted in a number of ways. It provides a general context for sustainable development and is not intended to provide detailed guidelines addressing specific aspects of sustainable development. To fill this gap the following SD principles were drafted by the international minerals community in 2003 (ICMM 2003): 1. Implement and maintain ethical business practices and sound systems of corporate governance. 2. Integrate sustainable development considerations within the corporate decision-making process. 3. Uphold fundamental human rights and respect cultures, customs and values in dealings with employees and others who are affected by our activities. 4. Implement risk management strategies based on valid data and sound science. 5. Seek continual improvement of our health and safety performance. 6. Seek continual improvement of our environmental performance. 7. Contribute to conservation of biodiversity and integrated approaches to land use planning. 8. Facilitate and encourage responsible product design, use, re-use, recycling and disposal of our products. 9. Contribute to the social, economic and institutional development of the communities in which we operate. 10. Implement effective and transparent engagement, communication and independently verified reporting arrangements with our stakeholders. These guidelines insure that SD concepts are applied equally across the industry while setting a clear performance standard and benchmark against which to evaluate success. By adopting these principles and issuing the Milos Statement (http://www.sdimi.org/milos_decl_October%206_2003.pdf), which provides a more detailed vision for integrating SD into everyday business operations, the minerals industry has embraced SD as a core corporate value. The unifying and holistic approach embodied in SD principles impacts the entire mine to market life cycle and addresses the economic, environmental and social consequences of mining. INDUSTRIAL MINERALS The world economy relies heavily on minerals; they are essential to economic prosperity and the quality of life. Industrial minerals are non-metallic, non-fuel minerals that provide the raw materials for a vast range of products used in most every aspect of daily life. They are mined and processed worldwide and they span the spectrum from relatively low value, high volume commodities (e.g. common clay, crushed stone) that are usually mined locally to high value, low volume specialty materials that are sourced from unique one of a kind deposits (e.g. barite, talc, mica). High volume commodity mining operations are often located near the end use market which, in most cases, means areas of high population density where construction and other urban activities drive demand. In these situations the strict adherence to SD principles is particularly critical as these are highly visible operations that must meet the public?s demand for good corporate citizenship. These operations are similar to chemical or other manufacturing facilities that operate near population centers. How does SME-AIME cope with profound changes in technology, markets - and most importantly - in employment patterns facing its membership today? This is the question that prompted the Society's Board of Directors to appoint a Long-Range Planning Commission (LRPC) (see ME, Feb. 1984, pp. 118 and 128). This is also the question addressed most particularly by the LRPC's Scope Committee. The Committee started its deliberations by asking such basic questions as "Who are we?" and "What is our business?" The Scope Committee then reviewed the findings and recommendations of other more specialized committees to develop and integrate their concepts of the Society's business for the next 10 years. The policy-making suggestions of the LRPC were reviewed and acted upon by the Board of Directors at its open meeting in Los Angeles on Feb. 26, 1984. At the Oct. 23-26, 1984 SME Fall Meeting in Denver, the Board will again review LRPC recommendations. In answer to the question "Who are we?" the Scope Committee proposed description, which was accepted by vote of the board of directors: . . A technical and professional organization that consists of individual members, namely those mining engineers, metallurgists, geologists, earth scientists, economists, managers, educators, and other professionals concerned with all facets of exploration, production, distribution, and using of mineral commodities. "These mineral commodities include all metals; industrial minerals, including construction materials and fertilizers; coal, oil shales, tar sands, and other mined fuels. Among the earth's mineral resources, only wellpumped oil and gas lie outside the Society's specific purview. "Traditionally, SME members work in the fields of engineering, technology, exploration and discovery, development, construction, mining, quarrying, beneficiation and processing, handling and transport, equipment manufacturing, sales and marketing, data processing, safety, land reclamation, environmental protection, taxation, administration, and management of these elements. "Members practice their professions in industry, in universities and research institutions, and in government. They may be operators, manufacturers, sales persons, contractors, consultants, analysts, researchers, educators, advisors, regulators, or members of supporting staffs. "The members of the Society are leaders in dedication to their crafts, in innovation, and in the pursuit of excellence. Among their numbers they count the most distinguished of engineers, applied scientists, and managers. "The Society is based in the United States, is active on a worldwide basis, and is open to nationals of any country. Certain qualifications must be met for attaining and maintaining membership." Purpose of the Society As to the question "What is our business?" the Scope Committee restated our purpose in light of current practice and the constitution of AIME and the bylaws of AIME and SME. The Board of Directors accepted the following proposed purpose of SME: "To further the professional development and well-being of its members by publishing and distributing technical writings, news, and information; by sponsoring meetings of members; by providing forums for discussions and for continuing education; and by fostering communication on the subjects within its purview. This paper describes work done by Placer Dome Technical Services Limited, a subsidiary of Barrick Gold, and Nautilus Minerals Inc. in support of the conceptual design of a subsea mining system. It describes an overall concept design plus specific studies into mechanical excavation at depth. The concept design includes one or more subsea excavators connected to a suction riser, which transports the cut material to a shipboard dewatering and offloading system. A multi-phase investigation was performed into the mechanical excavation of seafloor massive sulphides at depths of around 1600m. Rock samples were recovered and tested for rock properties and cutting behaviour. A small pick drum cutter was procured and tested on a representative concrete slab in a lab and tested again while submerged in a test tank. Finally the cutter was tested on a massive sulphide ore body at 1600m depth. The cutting performance results, e.g. pick forces and specific energies, should provide valuable input to the design of future full scale subsea mining systems.

Since 2008, the Portuguese Task Group for the Extension of the Continental Shelf has been operating the ROV "Luso" (rated for 6000m depth) for geological sampling of the deep North Atlantic seabed, performing surveys on, e.g., seamounts and hydrothermal vent fields. Amongst other sensors, the ROV is equipped with a full HD video camera with which still images of the deep ocean floor are recorded. Fixed on the ROV’s frame are two underwater "line" lasers, each generating a sharp green line (532nm) over the seabed. The two lasers are paralleled and calibrated at a set distance. Provided that the camera’s angle of view is known, numerical values for seabed surface area may be calculated using direct measurements taken from the pictures containing the laser lines. We present the corresponding main mathematical formulas, which are derived from simple geometrical considerations, and discuss how to generalize these results for an arbitrary camera tilt or pan. We present an example of application of our method by estimating values for percent coverage of rock substrate versus sediment. Our results are also relevant for determining seabed polymetallic nodule abundances from still images obtained during ROV surveys.

Advances in the technology of abrasion resistant irons and steels, which could help in combating abrasion and wear in mining operations, are reviewed. Nodular irons alloyed with nickel or copper and molybdenum, with acicular, bainitic or bainitic-martensicic microstructures are described. These alloy irons combine excellent castability and relatively easy machinabilitv with good resistance to wear. Recent progress in the development of high chromium molybdenum alloy irons is outlined, by which high temperature heat treatment of massive castings can be eliminated, alloy costs can be reduced and cracking problems avoided. Data is also given on the erosion-corrosion resistance of these irons. Trends in the development of improved cast steels are outlined. Factors influencing the toughness and abrasion resistance of manganese steels are considered. The 6% Mn 1% Mo manganese steels are shown to have a useful combination of toughness and abrasion resistance. Composite castings are seen as a means of com- bating abrasion in applications involving severe impact. A brief appraisal is given of recently developed martensitic wrought steels with improved weldability.

Unique onsite assembly of a 12.43 m Main Beam TBM and back-up system was completed on September 18, 2008 in the remote mountains of the Sichuan province of China. The equipment was assembled onsite, without previously having been assembled and tested in a factory, utilizing a method called Onsite First Time Assembly (OFTA). The Jinping-II hydroelectric project features four parallel headrace tunnels approximately 18 km long, two of which will be excavated by TBMs and two by drill and blast. A nearby fifth tunnel is being excavated by a 7.2 m TBM to draw down ground water in advance of excavating the headrace tunnels. This paper addresses the following topics: ¦Project description including geology and terrain; ¦The decision process leading to onsite first time assembly, the assembly process and logistics, and lessons learned; ¦Design features of the TBM and back-up system; and ¦Operational history from startup to the writing of the paper.

A recurrent concern in mining operations is how to deal with the large volumes of fresh water used which in turn generates large volumes of effluents that have to be treated. Water treatment can focus in one of two main strategies: treat the effluent as it is produced, or use a simulation tool to optimize water use in the process and reduce volume of effluents, contaminants concentrations, operational costs, and so on. This article shows a successful tool developed in Matlab-Simulink® that allows modelling a mining process and simulating potential improvements to evaluate the results. This tool has been proven in Cu-Mo operations and recently it has been used in poly-metallic operations. This article reviews the 4 Key Steps required to achieve our goals: a) Elaboration and verification of the mining Operation?s Block Diagram, based on a field survey; b)Model construction and input flows and qualities in selected streams; c)Model Validation and Simulation of new alternatives like recirculation, changes in reagents and dosage, partial treatment, flows merges/separation, and others; d)Development of the Optimal Solution which consists on determining the CAPEX and OPEX.

Beginning with the basics, this paper covers the economic and the technical aspects of the new roadheaders in both mine production and development. The author explains how to choose and integrate roadheaders into ongoing operations as another step in the inexorable march from labor to capital intensive mining. Innovations now on the drawing boards are covered that are the challenge of the future.
