The Florida phosphate industry is a leader in environmental control, both in terms of dollars spent and significant achievements. For instance, since 1960 the phosphate industry has spent over $71 million for air pollution and control devices, including installation, research and development and maintenance. Water pollution control expenditures also total in the millions, with over $69 million spent in the same 10 year period. The industry also is a leader in water conservation measures, having spent nearly $ 18 million since 1966 for conservation devices. Since phosphate is mined by strip mining, land reclamation plays an important part in the environmental control picture. Here again, the phosphate industry has met the challenge with a voluntary program of reclamation which accounts for over 20,000 acres of land useable after mining has taken place. In terms of progress in environmental control, the industry has been able over the years to solve within the limits of technology the fluoride emission problems it once had, and is currently at work solving sulfur dioxide and particulate problems. In just the past year the industry also has been extremely successful in limiting phosphorus and nitrogen discharges into area streams. The industry continues to cooperate with state and local pollution control officials on matters of environmental control, and future plans include even closer cooperation and assistance, as well as increased expenditures.

The visible portion of accounting-record keeping and preparation of financial statements-suggests a lack of sophistication and imagination. In reality, accounting is based on a large body of theory. Accountants philosophize, theorize, judge, create, and deliberate as a significant part of their professional practice. The subjective aspects that are so critical to current accounting practice, such as searching for truth and fact, judging what is fair presentation, and considering the behavior induced by presentations, are often overshadowed by the appearance of exactitude, precision, and objectivity that accompanies the use of numbers to express the financial results of the enterprise. * Fundamental accounting principles are hypothesized in the same manner as mathematical principles. These principles are justified by acceptability and intuition. Accounting theory is built upon these hypotheses, resulting in a coherent set of standards and rules. Although it does not specifically address every situation that may be encountered, this conceptual frame- work enables the manager or analyst to resolve specific situations. This framework also aids in the understanding and confidence in financial statements and ensures comparability between statements from different companies. This framework is referred to as "generally accepted accounting principles," or GAAP.

"Rotary percussion" implies two types of energy, rotary and percussion. Into these categories fall rock' drills of varying sizes. The larger ones drill above 6" diameter holes; the medium size, 2 3/4" to 4 1/2" holes; and the smallest, 1 1/4" to 2" holes. Essentially, the larger holes are drilled with doom-the-hole drills using tri-cone bits. Percussion energy evolves from the drill piston and rotation power from the rotary table or overhead drive, using drill collars or pull down mechanism to preload the bit.

This section is addressed to the computing needs of corporate (top) management which are less specialized than the computing needs of operating or divisional management described in the previous sections. It is essential that the computer be used as a tool to serve corporate management and that information and results are presented in a succinct form. A key responsibility of the manager of computer applications is to communicate well with corporate management. A common trap for computer management is to allow the development and implementation of sophisticated and academically interesting computer applications which do not enlighten corporate management in its decision-making task. Thus it is essential to devote sufficient time and effort to designing and specifying a computer system before developing and implementing the system.

Information Technology has addressed those problems unique to senior management in the mineral industry. In general, these problems are those concerned with decision-making. Peter Drucker in his discussion of making effective decisions identifies five phases: (1) define the problem, (2) analyze the problem, (3) develop alternate solutions, (4) decide the best solution, and (5) convert the decision into effective action. The scope of the chapter by Guernsey addresses the first three phases which provide input to the decision-maker. The decisions to be made relate, in most instances, to the economics related to a mineral property or process. Computer models have been designed to generate these economic and financial evaluations. No one model is appropriate to the solution of all management's problems. In this chapter several applications are identified and summarized; a model for the economic evaluation of a mineral property is described in greater detail. The implementation of such models is dependent on the unique needs of management.

As a general rule for gold treatment the presence of reasonable amounts of 'coarse' free gold will dictate the use of a gravity circuit. The actual particle size of gold that constitutes the por­tion of' coarse' free gold can vary widely. The larger its size the more troublesome it is, mainly because of the tendency for this gold to quickly settle out from slurries in regions of relatively low velocities. There are a multitude of places where 'coarse' gold can find a resting place, namely, in chutes, between and behind lines, in pump hoppers and in pumps themselves. Fortunately, the problems associated with recovering very 'coarse' free gold, say greater than Imm, is rare on most gold mines that have grinding and cyanide leaching circuits. For these operations it is common practice to have a gravity circuit situated within the milling circuit to recover 'coarse' free gold. Should the 'coarse' free gold constitute 15% to 20% of the total gold in a deposit then its recovery by gravity separation is seri­ously considered. As a gold mine 'matures' the availability of soft oxide ore decreases and the likelihood that harder ore having sulphide gold association increases. To maintain gold production rates in this situation either the gold grade of the treated ore must increase or more ore needs to be treated. In the latter case this is achieved by installing more grinding capacity, an expensive option, or coarsing the grind, with the downside of loss in gold recovery. In general the less expensive capital options is fol­lowed. There is, however, some upside to improve recovery when reasonable quantities of sulphide containing gold are pre­sented that can be recovered by flotation or gravity separation. Concentrates produced from these unit operations can be finely ground and reintroduced to the cyanide leach circuit to improve gold recovery. This scenario is a much less costly option than one where all the ore is ground finer. In this paper the experiences of recovering gravity gold from the Telfer Gold Mine, and gold associated pyrite from the New Celebration Mine will be discussed.

Normally I would like to begin a talk on photogrammetry by defining the word. However modern technology has changed the science so radically that it bears little resemblance to its original definition. Photogrammetry as defined is a science of taking accurate measurements from photography. Today's photogrammetrist, in addition to working with photography, finds himself working with magnetometers, infrared scanners, radiometers, holo¬graphy, lasers, side-looking radar, digital interfaces, computers and countless other modern space age concepts. The modern photogrammetrist is a pilot, photographer, lab technician, mathematician, geologist, programmer, engineer, physicist, and cartographer. His modern instrumentation and many spheres of activity all have a role in the environmental sciences. For example, the magne¬tometer which measures the earth's magnetic fields is used to locate the earth's ore deposits. The infrared scanner captures the heat emitted from the earth to detect ground waters and thermal pollutions. To elaborate on each of his many endeavors would take volumes rather than this short paper. I have elected therefore to discuss what I feel is his most important role in the environmental sciences - that of cartographer.

This is a world of change and has been from the beginning. There are constant efforts on the part of natural forces to wear down the high spots and fill in the low spots. Wind and water over eons of time tunnel through obstacles and build windways and waterways to make movement of air and water easier and more efficient. It is a natural, never ending, ever changing continuing effort. Man in his struggle to survive, and to progress, has had to adapt the terrain of the earth to fit his needs the best he could. First, he used natural caves to protect him from the elements; then he learned how to build earth and rock-moving tools from antlers, bone, rocks, and sticks and adapted his cave to increase his security and provide better protection from heat and cold and from his predatory enemies. As his numbers increased, so did the necessity of further adapting his environment to accommodate his needs. Water was usually not available when and where needed, especially in the desert areas where civilization developed, and long tunnels were drilled to intercept ground waters and lead them to underground caves carved out of soft limestone. Most of the tunnels of early man were to bring water from where it was to where man needed it. Then, as now, as man increased his chances for physical survival, he turned to the quality of life -- and this reflected in the concern for life after death. This lead to the elaborate shafts and tunnels for the protection and prservation of the more affluent noblemen and pharaohs of the early Egyptian civilization. Man used the underground for the stable temperature and for protection and safety.

She was young, beautiful, intelligent, virgin. Her name was Barbara and she captured the attention of many men, especially those in dangerous occupations. Her rich and doting father was hopeful of making an advantageous marriage for his daughter. Instead, she defied him, became a Christian, and refused to marry. Traumatized, he killed her and was himself struck dead by lightning. That is not the plot of a new soap opera. It is the melodramatic story of a Turkish teenager who was martyred in the third century but lives still as patron saint of mining. The story begins with a 20th century fact. Santa Barbara is a figment of imagination - perhaps based on an early oriental folk heroine, embroidered by a seventh century storyteller, and reworked by a ninth century Greek martyrologist. The authoritative Lives of the Saints reports: "There is ... Considerable doubt about the existence of a virgin martyr called Barbara and it is quite certain that her legend is spurious. There is no mention of her in the earlier martyrologies, her legend is not older than the seventh century, and her cult did not spread until the ninth." The Catholic Dictionary adds that the Barbara story is probably "a pious legend." Widely revered Santa Barbara was one of the most widely venerated saints of the Middle Ages. She became the patron, not only to miners, but also to artillerymen, engineers, architects, builders, stonemasons, gravediggers, and sailors. Mines, mountains, churches, and places bear her name. Barbara's feast day, Dec. 4, appears on the most ancient holy day calendars. And a Barbara festival is still celebrated throughout central Europe, in Spain, and in mining areas of Latin America on that date. The Pacific coast channel, the city, and the mission of California are named for Santa Barbara. An expedition, sailing that coast under Viscaino in 1602, was saved from shipwreck on Dec. 4 after the sailors prayed for Barbara's intervention. Franciscans gave her name to the modern Franciscan Province of Santa Barbara, which embraces six western states and the Philippine Islands. Barbara is intimately entwined with mining. Geologic terranes in Argentina include potential mineralized environments from localized younger Precambrian cratonic outcrops through Paleozoic sequences, generally in the northwest or under younger cover, to the Mes[o] zoic-Cenozoic Andean Systems in western and southern Argentina. Argentina is self sufficient or nearly so in many metallic, nonmetallic, and energy commodities, and exploration in each of these categories is ongoing. Present production of precious metals (silver and gold) is important, and many recent discoveries of base metals, precious metals, alloy metals, and other mineral categories have been made. Economic trends, geologic environments, and commodity types important in actual exploration are described, and it is emphasized that extensive areas showing attractive alteration, geochemical, and geological anomalies, especially of porphyry, cordilleran vein, and epithermal characteristics, remain to be fully evaluated.

The computation of hydrometallurgical equilibria is very difficult because of the many complex species in solution, the precipitates, condensed species, or solids, and the activity coefficient corrections necessary to non-ideal thermodynamics. Our objective was to tryout recently developed genetic algorithms to minimize free energy and solve the equilibrium computation. We selected test problems that were seemingly unsolvable with more traditional algorithms, and we applied genetic algorithms to them. We were pleased to find that genetic algorithms succeeded where other algorithms did not. We concluded that they are an effective tool for hydrometallurgical equilibria.

Sand and gravel deposits may be explored by many different methods. The methods used by The Standard Slag Company are primarily two in nature. One is using an auger which is limited in depth by various soil conditions. The other is a heavy wall dry sampler and a heavy wall wet sampler. The heavy wall dry sampler takes continuous uncontaminated samples up to seven inches in diameter. The heavy wall wet sampler takes continuous uncontaminated samples up to six inches in diameter. For us, the maximum depth of the heavy wall samplers has been two hundred fifty feet of which one hundred feet was above the water table and one hundred fifty feet was below the water table.

Traditional pit optimization techniques cannot take account of the requirement to blend ore in order to produce a saleable product, as is the case for iron ore, coal, limestone and other industrial minerals. Various techniques are proposed to overcome the deficiencies, many of which have been tested. The techniques in general involve the combined application of pit optimization and blend optimization techniques.

Glass is the most unique substance which man has made. It is understood that Phoenician sailors playing on the beach in Mesopotanmia around 12000 BC, produced glass by the fusion of sand and soda in their campfire. Glass is unique for many reasons. However, let us consider the following. It is made of materials which are opaque and yet glass can be translucent, transparent, or opaque. It can be as soft as cotton or stronger than steel. It transmits light readily and yet is totally impervious to gases and liquids. It is chemically an inert, creates very little pollution in its manufacture. It is made of the most abundant raw materials on earth. It is readily recyclable and has little pollution in its disposal. Glass containers are made principally from sand (that is, silica), soda, which is sodium carbonate, and lime, which is calcium carbonate, plus decolorizers or colorants and cullet. The proportion of cullet, broken glass, in most glass tanks today is roughly 10 to 20% of the glass product. In most cases, the cullet used in the plant is glass from off-ware, or broken ware, which is a waste product within the plant. Cullet has the following advantages. It contains all of the raw materials normally used in a batch. It tends to melt at a lower temperature than batch, thus saving some fuel, and, finally, by forming a crust above the normal melting system, there is a tendency to cut down air pollution.

"In today’s fast paced, globally competitive world, reliability and machine uptime are of the utmost importance to a successful operation. Along with these targets more emphasis is being put on cost reduction and decreasing the environmental impact of the overall system. To achieve these goals, automatic lubricators and lubrication systems have been used in many industries for years and are now becoming a common tool in the mining industry as well. These systems are able to provide proper lubrication amounts at the proper times autonomously, helping to keep the machines running smoothly while minimizing the physical support required. Copper mines in the southwest have begun utilizing auto lubrication to avoid mistakes and unplanned shut downs on critical equipment. This paper will describe the engineering behind these products and review case histories where these tools have been successfully utilized in the mining industry. INTRODUCTION In a dirty, dusty, wet environment, where machine uptime is imperative, proper lubrication of bearings is the only way to survive. With the push for cost reduction and mines striving to lower their environmental impact and increase worker safety according to MSHA guidelines, the old lubrication practices have come under scrutiny. It is no longer encouraged or cost effective to have maintenance personal walk from point to point throughout the entire mine pumping a shot of grease into each bearing once per shift. Automatic lubricators and lubrication systems have been on the market for years but recently, as the market focus has changed and technology has developed, the use of these systems has begun to rise in the mining industry. Automatic lubrication systems can be as simple as a single point lubricator lubricating one (1) bearing or a more complex system lubricating numerous bearings. With system design, the automatic lubricator provides a preset amount of grease to a bearing at regular, predetermined intervals. The systems designed to lubricate more than one bearing contain grease pumps of some design and possibly PLC controllers which can be used to remotely adjust and monitor the system. As can be seen in Figure 1, the right amount of lubrication can be achieved much more reliably with automatic lubricators. Depending on application needs, the market now has products to fit almost every wish list. This paper is going to focus on the single point systems that are lower in cost but are still being effective."

Modern coal cleaning technologies have allowed coal preparation facilities to become quite efficient at removing sulfur compounds, waste rock and low grade coals from run of mine coal. Up to 50% of the raw mined coal stream may end up as refuse, particularly when the coal originates from longwall mining operations, or is high in partings, rock and impurities. The refuse materials vary from coarse materials removed by physical screening to very fine materials removed by floatation and density separation processes. Coal refuse piles are also known by a variety of other names including "waste dumps", "gob piles" and "slate dumps". The potential hazards of improperly reclaimed refuse include contamination of surface and groundwaters by acidic leachates and runoff, erosion and sedimentation into nearby watersheds, spontaneous combustion, disturbance of topsoil borrow areas, and damage from landslides should large slope failures occur. Many of these problems have been particularly acute for abandoned refuse piles, and modern regulations attempt to minimize the environmental impact of coal refuse disposal operations.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted field tests to evaluate the effectiveness of a wet head continuous mining machine for reducing dust exposure for continuous miner operators. Wet head technology delivers water via sprays to the continuous miner's cutter head as opposed to traditional standard sprays located on the boom and body of the mining machine. The sprays, positioned directly behind each bit on the cutter head, deliver water at the point of attack, serving to cool the bits during mining to reduce the potential for frictional ignitions. The sprays also flood the coal with water to potentially suppress dust generation. Dust surveys were conducted at several mines to evaluate the wet head's effectiveness to control respirable dust exposure at the continuous miner operator location and in the immediate return. Results show that the wet head miner improved air quality at both locations to varying degrees in some cases and not in others when compared to a continuous miner with a standard spray system.

I INTRODUCTION The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authorities (WMATA) rapid transit system (METRO), currently under construction, will have a total length of 98 miles. Forty-eight of these miles are underground and require either open cut excavations or tunnels. Despite stringent construction controls, it is inevitable that some ground settlement will occur adjacent to the deep open cut earth excavations and large diameter earth tunnels. It is therefore essential to underpin nearby important structures to prevent excessive differential settlements and Fig. 1 presents the METRO criteria for this underpinning. This paper describes the underpinning methods currently used on METRO and evaluates the effectiveness of each method. II DESCRIPTION OF SUBSURFACE STRATA The foundation materials in the Washington, D.C. area are extremely variable. Fig. 2 presents an idealized profile showing typical subsurface strata. The engineering properties of each stratum have been determined by extensive exploration and testing programs. Fill: Washington, D.C. fills consist of every variety of soil and rubble. They are not important to this study because no underpinning is founded on fill material. Accurate measurement, tracking, and planning are vital for efficient utilization of energy in any mining operation, the major focus of this paper. This can be done with a number of assessments: 1) accurately measure KWH usage and track peak demand periods first; 2) identify the electrical equipment that affects your usage and the conditions that require it to be running; 3) remotely monitor and control as much equipment as possible, especially larger pieces of equipment; 4) with your utility determine that you are on the most suitable rate for your usage profile, then understand how your utility company calculates your electrical bill; 5) recognize how production affects energy usage and utility costs; 6) keep historical records of everything you monitor; 7) make information, live and historical, available to everyone; and finally, with the knowledge of your equipment and energy needs, automate controls that you have identified to optimize your energy usage and time of usage.
