Pumice and volcanic cinder are volcanic rocks characterized by a cellular structure. They are formed as gases (primarily water) dissolved in molten rock, or magma, exsolve to generate a froth that cools and solidifies into rigid foam. The cells or bubbles are referred to as vesicles and they range in size from a few thousandth of a millimeter to several centimeters. Due to their vesicular character, both pumice and cinder have lower density and higher porosity than most other rock types, and, as the vesicle walls are broken, sharp cutting edges are continually generated. These properties are the basis for their commercial value as lightweight aggregates, insulators, absorbents, and abrasives. There is a certain imprecision in the terminology applied to volcanic products, reflecting to varying degrees the diversity of volcanic rocks, the relative youth of volcanology as a distinct field of study, and customs and practices of commercial trade. In general terms, pumice is light colored (white, gray, pink, pale yellow, or brown) and highly vesicular, usually with vesicle walls that are visibly glassy. Many pumice fragments are light enough to float on water. Pumice is readily cut by steel tools and some can be crushed by hand. Individual pumice fragments may range from 1 or 2 m in one dimension to c1 mm. Commercially, finer fragments are called pumicite or volcanic ash. In volcanology the term ash refers to any fragment c2 mm in size regardless of its composition. Cinder, or scoria, is dark colored (black, red, brown) with thick vesicle walls that appear dull or stony and that may exhibit iridescence. Cinder typically is heavier than pumice and has a higher crushing strength. In volcanology the term scoria refers to dark vesicular material throughout a wide size range while it is common commercial practice to use scoria for larger fragments (usually greater than 2.5 cm) and cinder for smaller fragments. GEOLOGY Composition and Physical Characteristics Most pumice is silicic ranging from 60 to 70% SiO2, that is, dacitic to rhyolitic in composition. Pumice of less silicic composition, including basaltic, occurs but it is less common and does not have extensive commercial use. Scoria and cinder are typically basaltic to andesitic with approximately 50 to 60% SiO2. Pumice and cinder may contain phenocrysts of feldspars and various ferromagnesian minerals that crystallized in the magma prior to eruption. Fragments of rock through which the magma has passed may be entrained in the melt and wall rock may be fragmented and admixed during an explosive eruption. Some scoria particles have lithic fragment cores. Phenocrysts and lithic fragments are relatively unimportant in cinder end uses but their presence may be detrimental in certain pumice products. Pumice typically has vesicles <1 mm in size separated by thin walls. Vesicle shapes include irregular, spherical, elliptical, and elongate to the point of being tubular with a silky appearance (Fig. 1). In some pumices, the vesicles are interconnected making the fragments permeable and highly absorbent; in others the vesicles are isolated forming a highly porous but very impermeable pumice. Floating masses of pumice fragments from the eruption of Krakatoa in 1883 were reported in the Indian Ocean for up to two years after the eruption. Vesicles in cinder are larger and range from spherical to highly irregular in shape with much thicker walls and abundant interconnections. Scoria and cinder are typically heavier, porous, and do not float. Density and hardness of pumice must be expressed precisely to avoid confusion. Density may refer to the glass itself, the apparent density of the vesicular pumice particle, or the bulk density of pumice in a deposit or in a product. Pumice glass has a specific gravity of 2.5 or more depending on its composition. Pumice fragments typically have a specific gravity of 4.0 and so will float on water, at least until enough vesicles are saturated to cause them to sink. Expressed as density, pumice fragments typically weigh less than 1 g/cm3. Depending on moisture content, particle density, and particle size distribution, the bulk density of pumice typically ranges from 500 to 700 kg/m3. Typical bulk densities of cinder range from 700 to 900 kg/m3 for material used as lightweight aggregate while the bulk density of cinder used for highways and railroad ballast may be considerably higher. Hardness in pumice may refer to the glass vesicle walls, possibly including crystals or lithic fragments, or to the apparent hardness of the particle as a whole, which is more a measure of the strength of the vesicle structure. Pumice glass typically has a Mohs hardness of 5 to 5.5. A pumice particle may have a much lower apparent hardness and be easily cut with a knife or steel saw because the vesicle walls break readily. Pumice and cinder are primarily pyroclastic deposits formed as fragmental products of volcanic eruptions. Several classification - systems differing in various details have been proposed for pyroclasts and pyroclastic deposits based on particle size (Fisher, 1961, Schmid, 1981, Cas and Wright, 1988). Generally, particles >64 mm are referred to as blocks or bombs depending on their shape. Particles between 64 mm and 2 mm (4 mm in some schemes) are called lapilli and smaller particles are called ash. These names may be modified by compositional terms, for example pumice lapilli or scoria lapilli. Most commercial deposits are composed of fragments in the lapilli size range. In the United States, pumice fragments having one dimension of 5 cm or more are legally defined as block pumice. The procedures for acquiring pumice from federal land are determined in part by this definition and are described in a later section.

This paper discusses grade control of ore mined at Tennessee Copper Company. Mineral zoning and the influence of mineral zoning on production grade are discussed and illustrated. In order to make this most understandable we will first briefly examine the flow sheet at Tennessee Copper to indicate the path followed by the raw material toward its various products. Then we will discuss some of the characteristics of the ore, specifically the distribution or zoning of the minerals in the ore which cause some of the grade control problems. Finally we Will discuss same of the steps that are taken to combat these problems. The flow sheet is illustrated as plate 1. The mined ore is allied to obtain 3 usable products: Copper concentrate, iron concentrate and zinc concentrate. Copper is found in the mineral chalcopyrite, CuFeS2. The Copper concentrate from the mill contains about 20% copper. These concentrates are smelter in reverberatory furnace and Pierce-Smith converter to blister copper containing 99.2% copper. Some metal is cast into 360 lb. pigs and shipped to the refinery. Some is made into shot copper and used locally to make copper sulfate. Copper sulfate is marketed from Copperhill principally in fungicides.

Most construction projects, however, are subject to delays and/or disruptions which adversely affect the time (start, duration, and completion) and cost aspects of the project. DELAYS Delays fall into two categories: Compensable Delays for which the contractor is entitled to contract time extensions and additional money as compensation for the extra expenses generated by the delay or obstruction to job progress, and Non Compensable Delays, for which the contractor may or may not receive an extension of time but no additional compensation. INTRODUCTION Due to the current depressed state of the mining industry, many mining companies have been forced to operate at less than maximum capacity. This paper will describe how the AMAX Henderson Molybdenum Mine and Mill near Empire and Parshall, Colorado respectively have utilized operations scheduling and budgeting to achieve production targets at minimum operating costs The AMAX Henderson Molybdenum Mine and Mill have been operating most recently at approximately sixty percent of maximum capacity. OPERATIONS SCHEDULING Production Targets. The production targets are tons, operating days, tons per opera- ting day, head grade, recovery, and pounds of molybdenum. One specific objective of operations scheduling is to meet the production target for pounds of molybdenum. Present market conditions dictate that production be adjusted to match sales of molybdenum. Over-production and creation of molybdenum inventories is unacceptable. In summary, the product ion target for pounds of molybdenum must be met, but not exceeded. Capacity. The AMAX Henderson Mill single stage open crushing circuit capacity is 48,000 dry short tons per day. The AMAX Henderson Mill single stage semi-autogenous primary grinding mill circuit capacity is 38,000 dry short tons per day. All other AMAX Henderson Mi 11 circuits such as rougher flotation, regrind, cleaner flotation, lead leach, filtering, drying and concentrate handling are sized to accommodate the 38,000 dry short tons per day and pro- ducts from same. The tailing delivery system is designed to accommodate tailing from a 38,000 dry short tons per day operation. Constraints. One mill production scheduling constraint is that the mill operating schedule must be the same as mine production, ore haulage and crushing. There is a total crushed ore stockpi1e storage capacity of 240,000 dry short tons. This breaks down to 60,000 dry short tons of crushed ore over the three reclaim pan feeders for each of the four primary grinding mill circuits. However, there is only approximately 10,000 dry short tons of live crushed ore available over the three reclaim pan feeders for each of the four primary grinding mill circuits. The mineral zircon is mined for use as specialty foundry sands, abrasives, ores of Zr02 and zirco¬nium metal, refractories and zirconium chemicals. It is produced as one of several products from heavy-mineral sand deposits associated with ancient shorelines. Because of its low coefficient of thermal expansion, its high melting point, its high refractive index and its chemical inertness, it is an attractive refractory material. Zircon varies from deposit to deposit in terms of grain size, grain shape and chemical purity. Thus, there is a wide range of commercial zircon products that differ in impurity levels, particle shapes and grain sizes.

The knowledge concerning the lubrication of open gearing for mining machinery has contained many unknowns and at its best has relied to a great degree on a "Rule of Thumb" procedure. It will be within the scope of this paper to explain what we have learned to date and what must be learned in the future. The results in the lubrication of open gearing have spanned the spectrum of unsatisfactory to satisfactory. With the advent of larger mining machinery, we are faced with the necessity of a more thorough knowledge of open gear lubrication. We have avail- able, better steels for the gearing, advanced technology and machinery for cutting proper tooth profiles, and better means of aligning the teeth in the gear train. This has made it possible to transmit more horsepower through the same size gear set than ever before, if we have the proper lubrication to complement the factors previously mentioned. We have set up computer programs which can calculate the data fox the tooth forms, the correct operating center distances, the contact stresses, the bending stresses, and the PVT factor of the gear teeth. This program does not, at the present, have sufficient data available to calculate the type of lubricant which should be used.

THE PLANNED MAINTENANCE PROGRAM All concentrators should start with a planned maintenance program from day one. Every- body thinks they have a program in place before start-up, but in reality, most have only a fraction of what is needed to avoid the "Post Start-up Disaster" (PSD) - two years for start-up is not that uncommon. An effective program has all of the following: (1) Good people. (2) Area Maintenance. (3) Good PM Checklists. (4) Daily Work Schedules. (5) Written Work Orders. (6) Equipment Histories. (7) Backlog Control. The installation of a workable program takes hard work, talent, and commitment. You have to know what you are doing (hard work will not replace talent). Good People Good people are available in any location if you make the effort. Always check references carefully (both superiors, peers and subordinates). Was the last concentrator they worked at successful? Was it clean? Find out! Success or failure follows people around. I know people who are experts on PSD because they have lived through it three or four times. You need some college trained people with hands-on experience. There are no secrets, you have to make the effort. If you make a mistake in hiring (and you probably will), make the tough decision necessary to rectify it quickly. Area Maintenance Area maintenance refers to organization of supervision such that one person is uniquely accountable for every inch of ground and piece of equipment. Core Laboratories, a division of Western Atlas International, maintains laboratories in all energy-producing areas of the United States, as well as in many foreign countries. Central to laboratory operations has been the incorporation of computers and computer software. Core has developed a mu1tiuser Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) , which is currently installed in numerous company sites in the U.S., and is now undergoing installation in Canada. In addition, Core has provided custom soft ware to contract laboratories which Core operates on behalf of mining firms. The software development was done under the direction of the author in Denver, Colorado, and Casper, Wyoming. The intent of this paper is to pass some of the practical experience gained by our efforts on to those who wish to utilize computers more fully in the laboratory setting. The product of analytical laboratories is numbers. Nothing else comes from our work. We deal in information about samples. It is then reasonable to assume that the computer would be central to a laboratory operation. The hard part is to initially define what kind of computer the lab operation needs. The choices today can be very complex, and almost every hardware salesman is full of bad advice. Even the people in your own information services department may hold divided opinions. Since the advent of the personal computer, we have lived with a polarized data processing community. The PC boys consider their machines equal to any challenge, while the "save the mainframe" crowd view the PCs as limited toys that are only good for the things that clutter up a real computer. Management tends to lean toward whatever costs the least.

Mine equipment fires remain as one of the most concerning safety issues in the mining industry, and most equipment fires were caused by hot surface ignitions. Detailed experimental investigations were conducted at the NIOSH Pittsburgh Mining Research Division on hot surface ignition of liquid fuels under ventilation in a mining environment. Three types of metal surface materials (stainless steel, cast iron, carbon steel), three types of liquids (diesel fuel, hydraulic fluid, engine oil), four air ventilation speeds (0, 0.5, 1.5, 3 m/s) were used to study the hot surface ignition probability under these conditions. Visual observation and thermocouples attached on the metal surface were used to indicate the hot surface ignition from the measured temperatures. Results show that the type of metal has a noticeable effect on the hot surface ignition, while ventilation speed has a mixed influence on ignition. Different types of liquid fuels also show different ranges of ignition temperature. Results from this work can be used to help understand equipment mine fires and develop mitigation strategies.

Glamorous, burgeoning biotechnology and mundane industrial minerals would at first glance seem to share little in common, but in truth, modern biotechnology depends on many minerals. Biotechnical processes also can be used in industrial mineral extraction and processing. Biotechnology is broadly defined as the application of biological organisms, systems, or processes to manufacturing and service industries. Genetic engineering has reinvigorated one of mankind&apos;s oldest sciences, biotechnology, into a booming business. Many modern processes depend on microorganisms cultivated under very stringent conditions in bioreactors. Minerals from carbonate, sulfate, chloride, nitrate, phosphate, and silicate families are used to provide essential nutrients and to regulate growth conditions (such as pH) in order to assure optimal growth of organisms. Certain cells or enzymes perform better when immobilized upon or within solids, and minerals are often used to immobilize cells, especially in continuous process. Minerals are also used extensively in separating and purifying products of biotechnology. Diatomite, zeolites, and silica are especially useful in purification processes. Industrial minerals also are commonly used to clean up large volumes of process water that must be treated. Biotechnology can be employed in exploration, extraction, and processing of geologic materials and in reducing mining or other environmental problems through bioremediation. Microbes have been shown to solubilize certain elements and so promote extraction of heavy metals, phosphate, aluminum, potassium, and even rare earth elements. In a related technique, unwanted materials such as pyrite impurities can be leached microbially to produce cleaner products in sand and clay industries. Microbial actions can modify surface characteristics and so enhance certain ceramic properties. Certain organisms can accumulate useful elements from dilute sources; others can transform unusable chemical species to more useful forms. Deterioration of stone, concrete, and even glass or brick, can be accelerated by microorganisms. Control of such biodeterioration could improve long-term performance of industrial mineral products. Microbial processes have shown promise in improving several mine-related problems. Certain bacteria help remove clays from phosphate slimes and other suspensions. Others are used to degrade cyanide or other organic chemicals such as floatation aids. Cells immobilized on clays have been especially efficacious in bioremediation. Biotechnology industries, like the industrial minerals industries, encompass huge ranges of materials and processes. Costs of products from these industries range from pennies to thousands of dollars per unit, and their products are vital for maintaining modern life styles. Many biotechnical processes depend upon industrial minerals and certain biological processes can be harnessed to do useful tasks in the minerals field. The interplay of industrial minerals and biotechnology is important today, and as biotechnology advances, its interaction with the industrial minerals industry can only increase.

Today&apos;s subject of discussion, "OSHA AND ITS PROBLEMS", must be covered in the time allotted with a slight tongue in cheek approach, for if one is to believe that the "problems of OSHA" can be covered in a twenty minute review, he, himself, has one of three problems: 1. He has residual combat fatigue left over from World War II. 2. He is an egomaniac. 3. He is afflicted with both of the above. Clearly, the difference between divinity and humanity lies in their work. All human endeavor is plagued by errors and omissions, and unless one would be so facetious as to equate bureaucracy with godliness, our government-sponsored ventures seem to receive more than their share of missive missles with which to combat the ills of our society. Coming from an industry known for its undertaking of gargantuan projects, I feel capable of looking at things from the big picture perspective. No one would deny that the massive influx of government, both in the monetary and supportive personnel roles, has accomplished much. But only we, as tunnel constructors, have moved countless mountains of muck, placed endless yards of concrete and engaged the public on numerous fronts and in spite of all, at times have even made a profit! Profit! What a dirty word in our society today. It makes one shrink back from the filthy overtones dripping with the cloying scent of decay. Never shall we judge the success of our government programs with such a slimy yardstick as profit. No, for that which has been conceived in the bowers of Camelot, the measure must be more elevating and inspiring. Something to bring a proud bearing to our efforts! Although these exhibit similar structures overall, there are more acute valuation problems in alluvials. Most of this description will therefore be about alluvials with comments on bedded vis-a- vis alluvial deposits where necessary. Although geological comments refer mainly to lateritic deposits the method of valuation described applies to all bedded deposits, e. g. coal, limestone, phosphate. In general, the more a deposit suffers alteration during or after its formation and the more the sampling process disturbs its material, the greater the difficulties of valuation. Emphasis is laid on structure, as in any kind of deposit valuation cannot proceed until its structures are understood. Not all the structures found in alluvials will occur in bedded deposits, of course.

Two small diameter sewer tunnel projects being hand dug under major highways in the Greater Kansas City area encountered problems which were unforeseen from the geotechnical engineering information supplied with the contract documents. Both tunnels were being excavated by experienced crews using steel liner plates. One required the use of compressed air for completion, while the other required poling boards. Both contractors overran their budgets and filed changed condition claims, and this promoted further geotechnical engineering investigations. Fissured clays beneath a water table were encountered at both sites, but the character of these clays differed; however, both were inadequately described in the original geotechnical engineering reports.

The principals of McCabe Industrial Minerals, Inc., have been involved in the mining, processing, and marketing of nonmetallic minerals for more than 40 years. In addition to marketing nonmetallic minerals produced by other companies, McCabe Minerals owns and operates three plants that produce headlap-roofing granules, with 25 employees and annual sales approaching $6 million. During its 22 years of operation, the company has developed many different markets, and a list of factors that is used in making our marketing and feasibility studies. These criteria (Table 1) are used extensively by the company in all of its projects, and we present this and other data about the company in this brief report. The mining industry, in particular the coal industry, has experienced the implementation of some major environmental regulatory programs during the past two decades. Over the coming decade the coal industry will probably experience only "fine tuning" of the regulatory programs they now operate under. The rest of the indus- try, however, appears to be on the verge of coming under a major new regulatory effort by the Environmental Protection Agency. Litigation and resulting court decisions will be the main force driving further changes in the SHCRA (Surface Mine Control and Reclamation Act) regulatory program. These changes are anticipated to be minor in compar- ison to earlier changes. EPA, however, is preparing a regulatory program which may carry as much impact to the rest of the mining industry as SNRA was to coal. Details of this program have yet to be worked out. Changes in the way EPAts Clean Air Program is applied to mining could also significantly impact the mining industry.

Microcomputers are becoming more convenient to use at all levels of the business world, including the mining industry and mine offices. The state of the mining industry requires that we become more productive and innovative in our analysis of deposits and operations. With the help of computers, examination of options to increase productivity can be performed quickly and inexpensively. Effective use of the computer for designing underground workings combines the calculation power and speed of a computer with the technical expertise and judgment of the engineer. Computer programs can perform calculations in minutes that could take an engineer several months. The engineer must be on guard when using the computer for any calculation because it is very easy to assume the results produced by a computer program are always correct. The computer is a sophisticated calculator but cannot recognize logical errors nor transposition of numbers. Also some intuitive or obvious decisions made by an engineer are difficult or impossible to program effectively.

Sustainable development is here to stay and has been placed strategically at the heart of all European public policy. The future of the minerals industry here in Europe as well as elsewhere depends on how well professional mining people, both as individuals and through their associations and others, have to present their case for a sustainable mining and minerals industry to a critical world. And, Greece with its strong and expanding mining, minerals and metals base has more to win or lose from this endeavor than many others.

General mining practices at W. R. Grace&apos;s Bonny Lake mine are much the same as those used in open pit phosphate mines in Central Florida, except for the difference in the depth of the overburden which introduces many variations, From 1945 to 1961 the mining at Bonny Lake has been from an area in which the overburden averages from 55 to 60 feet and in several locations exceeded 65 feet. The matrix thickness will average 15 to 18 feet for the areas mined. As you can see from the above depths a total hole depth will average from 70 to 75 feet.

Asbestos is a generic term for industrially useful fibers recovered from exploitable deposits of the asbestiform varieties of five silicate minerals: chrysotile, anthophyl-lite, actinolite-tremolite, cummingtorute-grunerite, and rie-beekite. Asbestos and asbestiform fibers of some other minerals are known to be carcinogenic. Minerals crystallized in the asbestiform habit-are characterized by unique properties (morphology, strength and flexibility, physical and chemical durability, and defect-free surface structures). The key to the unusual properties, and health effects, of asbestiform fibers appears to be in their unusual surface structure. In contrast, non-asbestiform crystals of the same minerals, including the five so called asbestos minerals, do not have these properties and are not carcinogenic.
