Microbiological leaching has been used as an alternative approach to conventional hydrometallurgical methods of uranium extraction. In the microbiological leaching process, iron-oxidizing bacteria oxidize pyritic phases to ferric iron and sulfuric acid, and uranium is solubilized from the ore due to sulfuric acid attack. If uranium in the ore material is in the reduced, tetravalent form (UIV), a red ox reaction is involved whereby uranium is oxidized to the hexavalent form (UvI) upon dissolution. In acid-leaching systems, the primary oxidant is ferric iron, which is reduced to ferrous iron by its chemical reaction with UIV. The ferrous iron thus formed is reoxidized to ferric iron by iron-oxidizing bacteria such as Thiobacillus ferrooxidans and Leptospirillum ferrooxidans. Nutritional requirements and responses to environmental extremes of acidophilic iron-oxidizing bacteria are appraised. The S-entity in Fe-sulfides is oxidized to sulfate by bacteria similar to Thiobacillus ferrooxidans and Thiobacillus thiooxidans. Pyrite and marcasite oxidation is a sulfuric acid forming reaction. Heap, dump and in situ leach techniques are feasible as bacterial leaching systems.

Specified for use by non-EDP oriented staff, HOARDS also offers functions to subset, transform points to polygons of influence, and to calculate polygon overlap, enabling ready and efficient conversion of databases containing point oriented sample data to area/volume mine planning format. Both the design and implementation to date, and proposed enhancements are discussed.

"Bleeding", as used in mine ventilation language, has a number of meanings among mining men and is regarded with different degrees of importance. This lack of uniformity stems from a number of specific situations. A method that is adequate in a mildly gaseous mine may fall short in a very gaseous mine. Projected bleeders could be dependable under a certain type of roof, and totally unsatisfactory under a different type. Similarly a plan of bleeders can be rendered useless due to undulations of seam and water in one mine and function well in another. Finally, what is effective in a mining system with partial recovery will not suffice with full recovery. You may wonder, then, if there is a common denominator for the essential function of "bleeding". In my opinion, there is, and it can be defined as controlled movement of air across an active pillar line toward the back and outby ends of the adjacent gob area into the headings provided for the purpose. The objective is to maintain as methane-free as practicable a belt adjacent to the working places, so that, if face ventilation is interrupted temporarily, the gas will not accumulate in dangerous volumes at the working faces before ventilation is restored. It's possible for these temporary interruptions to be unnoticed in time or at all. In such cases, ineffective bleeding could cause a disaster. This has happened. To control, there must be power. That is to say, there must be adequate air, pressure differential between the front and back ends of a pillar line to facilitate proper regulation for diverting of air to the various portions of the gob and as far away from the active section as is practicable. As an indication of the importance of pressure, it is noteworthy that one may provide and maintain in a reasonably open condition a heading or two for a bleeder system and fail to obtain effective bleeding .because air pressure differential is inadequate. On the other hand, you are all familiar with the fact that pillar lines in some seams can be ventilated adequately by air flow straight across the gob when the section is near a main return shaft and thus obtains a heavy pressure differential.

Two types of native sulfur deposits have been found in Lechuguilla Cave: thin late-stage crusts and massive early- formed deposits. Most, if not all, of the crusts appear to have formed by remobilization of native sulfur contained within gypsum and sulfur masses. The process is occurring today and is slowly converting the sulfur to gypsum. The absence of primary gypsum or reductants in the cave indicates that the early-formed massive sulfur deposits did not form by in-place reduction of sulfate, which is the process that formed the commercial sulfur deposits in the Delaware basin. Instead, it appears that H2S dissolved in basinal brines was oxidized by oxygen in near-surface ground waters in the cave. Fluid- inclusion data, which suggest the presence of both fresh water and saline water as the sulfur formed, support this interpretation. Although individual sulfur deposits in Lechuguilla Cave are no more than several tens of metric tons, the abundance of secondary gypsum (as much as 10 meters thick) indicates that native sulfur may once have been much more extensive.

A number of important studies, ongoing environment monitoring efforts and mining and road construction projects in the lignite based electrical power production area of Amyntaio ? Ptolemais in North West Greece require an accurate and up to date model of the topography. In recognition of the importance of such a model, a project was initiated by the Laboratory of Mining Information Technology and GIS Applications in the Department of Geotechnology and Environmental Engineering of the Technological Educational Institute of Western Macedonia. A massive surface triangulation model was generated from vector data using an optimized Delaunay based method. Combined with aerial and satellite imagery, the triangulation model provides a complete 3D terrain model of the area characterized by high levels of accuracy, detail and realism. The generated model is easy to modify with new data in order to improve its detail and keep it up to date with ongoing earth moving and development operations in the area.

Many consider rougher flotation control to be more of an art than a science. Some have even thought it impossible to make process control decisions and changes without human interaction. Controlling flotation bank pulp levels to maintain consistent pulling rates in the face of changing feed slurry flow rates, varying mineral types, and inconsistent reagent additions can be daunting. However, an advanced supervisory control strategy was installed on the plant floor to control an industrial rougher flotation circuit with little or no operator interaction. Plant staff monitored the flotation circuit under supervisory control and reported benefits of up to 4% improvement in copper recovery above that achieved with an older supervisory control strategy. To accomplish this work, a novel use of instrumentation to solve a flotation bank pulp level control problem was employed, a new implementation approach was used to correct some flaws in the older approach, and careful attention was paid to a few key process control principles. This paper discusses important aspects of these activities.

Most fatalities in tunnel fires are caused by the spread of toxic smoke. Controlling the spread of smoke is crucial to provide a survivable environment for emergency egress. A properly designed and tuned feedback control loop is required to achieve a target flow that is slow enough to allow pedestrians to escape under different boundary conditions. Feedback control loops are also helpful in optimizing energy consumption under moving traffic conditions. A reliable feedback flow control system requires sophisticated engineering knowhow and experience, careful selection of instruments and controlled variables, and thoughtful implementation from design through field testing and commissioning.

Cost effectiveness in gold and silver leaching has centered mainly on reducing or preventing excessive use of lixiviants. In cyanide leaching practice, the active reactants, cyanide and oxygen, present different problems. The activity of cyanide may be adjusted at cost, but oxygen from air, has a fixed, low activity with an equilibrium concentration of ~7 ppm. Consequently, the use of air in agitation and heap leaching presents distinct kinetic problems. The refractory ores are either high consumers of oxygen or tend to immobilize dissolved precious metal-cyanide complexes. Commercial treatment of refractory ores involves oxidation by pressure leaching, roasting or biooxidation prior to cyanide leaching. Chemical reactions important in preoxidation of refractory sulfide ores by pressure leaching and biooxidation are considered. Major emphasis is given to the role of oxygen in heap leaching of oxidized ores.

"The objective of this work is to validate a methodology for spatially predicting the fracture intensity, defined as the average fracture area per unit volume. First, using the observations from drill holes, the fracture intensity is directly inferred at the support of drill-hole composites based on a Terzaghi correction. Subsequently, the composite values are interpolated to larger blocks. The methodology is tested on sets of simulated fracture networks, in which each fracture consists of a disc with a random diameter, random position and random orientation. For each of these simulated networks, one can calculate the actual fracture intensity within any region of space, based on geometric considerations. A regular sampling mesh is then defined to emulate a set of vertical drill holes and the proposed methodology is applied to predict the fracture intensity, both globally and locally. The actual and predicted fracture intensities are finally compared, showing that predictions are unbiased, insofar as, on average, the prediction error is always close to zero. Also, the error dispersion increases when the support of the prediction decreases, which is consistent with the well-known support effect. In practice, the proposed methodology allows predicting fracture intensity based exclusively on drill-hole information, without the need for simulating fracture networks in space, hence its interest. INTRODUCTION The characterization of fractures in rock masses is an important part in the evaluation of mechanical and hydraulic properties of rocks. Fractures have a large impact in disciplines such as reservoir engineering, safety of underground storage of CO2 or of nuclear waste, assessment of high-enthalpy geothermal installations, safety of mining exploitations, efficiency of in-situ leaching operations or of extraction by block-caving. As a rock mass property, fractures must be characterized in the three-dimensional space, whereas observations are limited to 1D (drill holes) and 2D (outcrops, drift walls), moreover very often to rather short stations, so that the available data are subject to geometric bias, truncation and censoring. Fracture characteristics includes the number of fracture sets and, for each set, the number, orientation, spacing, location, shape and size of the fractures must be inferred from data sampling. Some important parameters that are considered nearly in all models are fracture intensity and fracture size."

PROJECT The Walgautunnel is the heart of a new hydro scheme in Western Austria, which is supposed to go into operation in 1984. With it's length of 21,4 km, a bored diameter of 6,25 m and an internal operating pressure of 13,5 bar it will be the largest water conducting tunnel in Austria. Even compared with some of the country's world-famous highway tunnels like 'Tauern' or 'Arlberg' it has to be regarded as a major tunneling project. Owner is the Vorarlberger Illwerke AG, a power corpo¬ration founded in 1924. In the course of the past 6o years this company developed the 'Werksgruppe Obere Ill - Lünersee', consisting of 6 major power plants and 4 large reservoirs. The installed capacity is 1.114 MW in the generating and 529 MW in the pumping mode. The total power output amounts to 1.916 GWh. The water for power generation comes from the glaciers of the Silvrettagroup, as this corner of the Austrian Alps between Vorarlberg , Tyrol and Switzerland is called. The Walgauwerk utilises all the water accumulated by the existing schemes as well as the so far unused run-off water, passing by in the river Ill. The intake to the Walgau-Tunnel is situated right beside the lower reservoir of the recently completed pump-storage plant 'Rodund II' at an elevation of 64o m above sea level. Though the head is a mere 162 m, 1 billion m3 of water will generate 356 GWh per annum. The power-output of the two Francis turbines is 86 MW.

At the 2017 ICGCM-conference in Morgantown, WV, a case study was presented with measurements of the upward surface movements or uplift after the closure of two neighboring coal mines (Winterslag and Zwartberg, Belgium). One was closed in the sixties, and the other closed in 1988. The study was based on satellite data (Radar-interferometry or InSAR). The analyses showed both a significant variation of uplift values above the mined area and the surrounding zones, and a variation of the uplift rate as a function of time. In other words, the phenomenon of uplift is complex. At that time, it also was clear that more research was needed to better understand this phenomenon, e.g., an identification of the various mechanisms that are relevant for the process of uplift and the quantification of the various impacts. A systematic analysis of all relevant parameters resulted in a framework that forms the basis for the analytical calculations of uplift values. These calculations show that the main impact is due to changes in the hydrostatic pressure. However, the expansion of the softest parts, i.e., the collapsed or goaf material, is not only important, but the expansion of the (stiffer) non-collapsed strata layers due to a change in pore pressure also must be integrated into the model. For the case study, the partial flooding of the underground after closure of the mine that was abandoned in the sixties is integrated into the model. Larger stiffness values also are applied for this mine, in comparison to the values of the more recently closed mine. Overall, a very good correlation is observed between the InSAR-measurements and the calculated values along a north-south transect.

Previous research developed guide- lines to restrict the placement of air velocity sensors to areas of Low turbulence in underground nines. Even though these guidelines are theoretically correct, and may be easy to follow in underground coal mines, their application in small underground metal mines is difficult. As a result, study was undertaken at the Colorado School of Mines Experimental Mine to determine if an air velocity sensor could be placed in other locations with acceptable results. It was found chat by applying a variable calibration function to correct for changes in amounts of turbulence, instead of the previously used calibration factor multiplication, the sensor could be used successfully in areas of moderate turbulence.

Lignite deposits in Poland occur within clastic Tertiary series at the depth suitable for opencast mining. Aboundant aquifers with the good quality waters that should be protected against contamination or depletion often accompany them. Landscape and underground water protection are the main regional environ-mental factors that limit the possibility of exploration and mining; presented on map of lignite bearing series distribution allow to delimit areas "free" for exploration and mining and areas where some limitations can be met up to no admittance of any industrial activity.

Measurable physical characteristics of placer deposits include geological, geomorphological, sedimentological and mineralogical features which produce the complimentary ingredients with which one can formulate an economic evaluation of these complicated deposits within the confines of a well established geological model. Heavy mineral suite composition and character will change downstream from the provenance area and will compliment the related depositional environment. Careful attention to gold particle characterization during the exploration phase can indicate new source additions, enhance deposit evaluation methods and greatly assist in maximizing metallurgical efficiencies. Failure to recognize and measure these important features very frequently leads to frustrated and unrewarding placer evaluation goals. Increased general acceptance of sedimentology in the gological appraisal of ore bodies has progressed into the science of clastic sedimentalogy using measurable parameters to evaluate minable units. This branch of geology has developed as a tool in locating, defining, and mining alluvial concentrations of valuable heavy minerals. The repeatedly successful application of this valuable tool in conjunction with other classical geological methods can be directly related to the development of a geological model which formulates the distribution of detrital gold. This use of multiple geological techniques permits the transfer of routinely derived data to management. Standardized nomenclature permits the transmission of uniform information thereby promoting credible property evaluation. This approach enables organizations to critically assess large numbers of potential mining targets for definitive feasibility studies. Sedimentology must play an integral role in the evaluation of any alluvial deposit. The presence of calcium ion in iron ore pulps causes heterocoagulation of montmrillonite on hematite leading to indiscriminate dispersion. Two methods were investigated to control the adverse effect of montmorillonite: chemical method using such complexing agents as EDTA and sodium tripolyphosphate, and mechanical method involving ultrasonic treatment. Their roles in controlling the adverse effect were investigated by zeta potential measurements, starch adsorption tests, and flocculation and selective flocculation tests.

Offshore oil and gas production operations have moved from water depths of about 50 feet in 1948 to the present record depth of 340 feet. Although mobile drilling rigs are widely used for exploratory drilling, most development drilling and production operations have been conducted above water from the decks of fixed, bottom-founded platforms. Increasing water depths have caused problems associated with design and construction of these platforms and with laying of pipelines, but not so much with other activities. After a platform is installed, drilling, production, and maintenance operations are similar to those onshore and are relatively unaffected by water depth. Events of 1968 indicate that offshore production may soon extend into much deeper water. These events include leasing of Santa Barbara Channel acreage in water depths over 1500 feet, and the successful drilling of a wildcat well in 1300 feet. Designs have been developed for platforms suitable for installation in water over 600 feet deep, and studies suggest they may be used in some areas to water depths of 800 to 1000 feet. Buoyant towers can probably support above-surface platforms in water 1000 feet and deeper. Although the cost of either of these platforms will be high, once installed they will permit relatively low-cost development drilling and production operations compared with estimates for subsea production systems. In some cases, savings in development drilling costs alone could pay out the platform investment.

Introduction Mine sampling determines the practicality of any mining operation. Improper sampling can result in an incorrect appraisal of present production and future potential. Therefore, the mine department in charge of ore-reserve calculations and mine sampling should be overseen by competent and experienced professionals with technical backgrounds qualifying them to produce accurate results. Sampling is a process by which portions of an ore body are collected and analyzed to estimate the average mineral content of the entire ore body. It is incorrect to assume that a large number of samples eliminates any errors in the sampling method. To obtain unbiased samples, proper sample location with respect to rock type and mineralization is just as important. The sampling procedure must yield correct results for the type of mineral deposit, and careful consideration should be given to whether or not the sampling technique has been developed to an extent sufficient to eliminate as much human error and bias as possible. Only after the ore has been mined and milled is the sampling accuracy known. Sampling also provides information about the bulk composition of the ore for mineralogical and metallurgical tests that determine the economic ore-waste boundaries and the geologic trends for exploration. Actual mining plans can be developed from this information to maximize profits. Accurate sampling is critical, and thus must be approached in a scientific manner. Sampling Techniques Sampling practices and techniques are as varied as the mines in which they are used. The method(s) chosen must be tailored to suit the company and mining needs. For instance, tabular uranium deposits, vein gold deposits, and porphyry copper deposits pose special problems in conducting unbiased sampling. The mine geologist or engineer in charge must develop a sampling method, test it in a sample area, and then critically evaluate the results. If the results from the test area are accurate within the economic limits established by the company, they then may be adopted for general use in the mine. Four routine sampling methods are suitable for specific sampling objectives in the daily mine routine: (1) channel sampling, (2) chip sampling, (3) grab sampling, and (4) bulk sampling. The final sampling results depend upon how the four methods are combined to accurately determine the grade of the ore body. When used in conjunction with each other during different stages of mine development, the channel, chip, grab, and bulk sampling methods provide an in-house check or a comparison by which mining methods and sampling procedures can be evaluated. However, the most valid check is based upon the daily mill production. Channel Sampling Channel samples consist of cuttings collected from a groove cut into the rock about 102 mm (4 in.) wide and 19 mm (0.75 in.) deep. Various tools ranging from a 1.8-kg (4-lb) hammer and moil to a pneumatic chisel can be used to cut the sample. Accessibility and rock hardness determine the applicable sampling tools. Before attempting to take a sample, the rock surface must be cleaned thoroughly; the method of cleaning depends upon the amount of mine dust accumulated on the surface or the degree of alteration of the rock surface. Typical cleaning methods 'employ a wire brush, water, or chipping a fresh surface. Next, the sample outline is marked on the prepared surface, taking care to choose appropriate sample loca- tions. After determining the proper sample outline and length, the sample can be chiseled out, catching the rock fragments on a canvas tarpaulin on the floor, in a powder box, in a canvas bag to avoid contamination, or by some other suitable means to capture all of the sample. Vertical veins present a special problem because the drift's back usually is arched, not square. For example, Fig. 1 shows that if sample intervals are measured from A' to D', the length of the sample interval is greater than the true vein width, resulting in an incorrect calculation of the ore reserves. The correct method would collect three samples at A'-B', B'-C', and C'-D', using either actual measurements in the mine represented by A-B, B-C, and C-D or trigonometric calculations to determine the true ore thickness. Then, each sample can be weighted by grade and true thickness for the vein. Channel lengths usually are a maximum of 1.5 m (5 ft), and it is good practice to divide longer samples into smaller intervals according to structures, changes in rock types, or differences in rock hardnesses. The influence of those features on the mineralization then can be determined. Chip Sampling Chip sampling is a variation of channel sampling used when the rock is too hard to channel sample economically or when little variation in the mineral content indicates that this sampling method will yield results similar to those of channel sampling. Rather than cutting a channel in the rock, small chips are flaked off at regular intervals over the entire face or area being the mine. sampled. Care must be taken to assure that the sample is representative of variations in the rock hardness and type. hi^ method is fast and useful in preliminary evaluations, but it should not be used for quantitative ore-reserve calculations. Grab Sampling Grab sampling is a fast method for double checking either channel or chip-sampling procedures, and, in some instances, mine production can be estimated from carefully taken grab samples. Grab sampling takes equal amounts of material at selected intervals over a mine dump, a muck pile, or from an ore car to estimate its Channel Sampling mineral content. Generally, this method is not considered reliable. Many independent variables can affect this type of sampling process. Structures along the rift were subjected to episodic reactivation. Major north-northeast-trending high-angle normal or reverse faults and northwest-trending trans-current fault systems, may exercise control over ore-forming processes. Gabbro and basalt are the dominant igneous rock types. Carbonatite and kimberlite occur in Nebraska and Kansas. Concentrations of Cu, Ni, Co, Ti, Au, Ag and PG-minerals are known to occur in this setting Arkosic sandstone, siltstone, shale and minor carbonate units occur on top of the rift basalts and in flanking basins where they may reach thicknesses of 10 km. The potential for stratiform or unconformity-related metal liferous deposits must be considered.

"Spent auto-catalyst is a potential secondary resource because of the higher concentration of valuable platinum group metals (PGMs) as compared to the primary ores. Despite the well-developed commercially tenable technologies, further researches are being carried out to extract the PGMs with high efficiency. It is however, critical in this context to reuse not only the PGMs but also other metals contained in the spent auto-catalyst particularly that of the cordierite substrate such as aluminum, magnesium and cerium oxide (CeO2). This is important in view of the fact that no recycling process has ever stressed upon the recovery of cordierite substrate and CeO2 since the main target metals are mostly the PGMs. In this study, a new hydrometallurgical approach has been proposed in order to recover the PGMs as well as cerium oxide and materials from the cordierite substrate by using sodium hydroxide roasting followed by sulfuric acid dissolution. Under the optimal conditions for roasting at above 600°C, and weight ratio of sample to NaOH of 1:1 for 60 min, the cordierite was converted to the soluble phases. Dissolution of the roasting products using H2SO4 solution (1M) at 25°C for 60 min enriched the PGMs and Cerium oxide contents in the residue. Subsequently, PGMs in solution after dissolution can be cemented using Al and Cerium oxide in residue can be recovered by hot digestion using concentrated H2SO4.. INTRODUCTION Auto-catalyst can significantly control the gaseous emission of automobiles, and has been considered as a potential secondary source of Platinum group metals (PGMs) after being decommissioned from the vehicles. The PGMs demand is continuously increasing to comply with the growing vehicle population and the tightening of emission standards all over the world; meanwhile the natural resources of these metals is facing the threat of depletion. Therefore, it is crucial to progressively substitute with an alternate resource to supply PGMs other than that of the primary ores. Nowadays, vehicular transportations worldwide are totally installed with the auto-catalysts. However, they should be replaced after reaching their service life. If there is no recycling of such resources, huge amount of valuable metals will be wasted. The quantity of PGMs that can be recovered from the spent auto-catalyst depends on the size of car, which averages to 1-2 grams for small cars and 12-15 grams for the big truck; this is significantly higher than that of the primary ores containing 2-10 grams PGMs per ton. Consequently, the recovery of PGMs from spent auto-catalyst becomes extremely favorable as compared to the primary resources due to higher concentration of PGMs, with much lower and simpler processing steps, and lesser pollution."
