New regulations have focused attention on the potential environmental impacts of industry, particularly the handling of wastes. Modifications are currently being proposed to the Bevill Amendment. And development is ongoing of Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) Subtitle D regulations specific to mining wastes. The result is a growing concern on the part of lenders, developers, buyers and owners regarding acquisition and ownership of mining properties. One of the most effective tools in managing the regulatory requirements is an environmental audit. An environmental audit can be a literature review to determine regulatory requirements. In Peru, the third destination in worldwide exploration based on expenditure, mining conflicts have spread dramatically over the last decade. Mining companies need to create new initiatives to avoid social conflicts and strengthen the social capital needed to keep mining in a country with proven mineralogical riches. This document provides information about a research project that explored the opinions and experiences of a resource many times overlooked by companies: the human resource. Over 30 surveys were conducted among professionals working at mines in the Peruvian mining industry, in different departments and from different organizational levels. Mining employees acknowledged that they play an important role in the development of company-community relationships and gave their impressions about initiatives implemented by international mining companies in Peru. Mining employees also provided their recommendations to succeed in a location where cultural differences have not been properly considered.

Regional radiometric, magnetic and geologic data point to Copper Mountain as an area of general uranium favorability. Sub-regional radiometric and magnetic data direct interest to a specific section of an overthrust Precambrian granite. Detailed magnetic and resistivity surveys in this area show local targets of interest, one of which corresponds to Rocky Mountain Energy's North Canning deposit. On the basis of these data a second and previously untested target was drilled resulting in the intersection of uranium horizons similar to those at North Canning. This integrated geophysical approach can be used for uranium exploration in geologically similar areas.

Public Law 95-87 enacted by Congress in 1977 and subsequent regulations require coal mine operators to predict the effects of mining on the environment prior to the start of mining. Prediction of the effects of mining on the local groundwater system is a difficult task due to its complex nature and the lack of detailed published information. An investigation of water level fluctuations in five we1 1s positioned over three consecutively mined longwall panels was initiated in conjunction with an intensive subsidence monitoring program. The purpose of this work was to provide detailed information which could be used to predict certain hydrologic effects of longwall mining in the Northern Appalachian Coal Region. The results of this case study indicate that water level fluct- uations in the local ground-water system above longwall panels is associated with subsidence and that the static water level will generally re- establish at or near the pre-mining elevation after mining is completed.

As energy requirements in the United States expand with the growth of the Nation, use of coal also can be expected to increase. This optimistic outlook for the coal industry is based on our vast reserves of high quality coals and the possibility of converting coal to end uses other than electricity and metallurgical coke. Potentially, millions of tons of coal might be needed in the form of gas and liquid fuels to supplement our reserves and imports of these natural products. Exactly when they will enter the economy on a large scale depends on many factors. On January 1, 1960, the estimated remaining reserves of coal were 1-1/2 trillion tons, about 50 percent of which is bituminous coal. In 1965, the production of bituminous coal and lignite passed the 500-million-ton mark, emphasizing the steady upward trend from the recent low of 403 million tons, and if the present rate of increase continues within the next five years, output should pass the alltime high of 631 million tons achieved in 1947.

Historically, the presence of methane has been a problem, mainly in and around the working areas of active coal mines, and only in these area has drainage been considered. Drainage, where practical, has been achieved through the drilling of holes forward into the coal and the surrounding strata from the working area. These holes generally have been short in length, although where methane drain- age operations around a longwall face have been undertaken, the holes have had to be longer in order to adequately drain from the center of the face into the access gate roads. In recent years, attempts have been made to degasify the coal seams in advance of mining, without disruption of the mining cycle. This is done by drilling much longer horizontal holes through the coal in advance of the working area. Under the aegis of the Federal Government, methods have also been developed for draining seams of coal of their methane content in advance of mining, but from shafts sunk from the surface, without using the active area of the mine as the location for the drill holes.

Introduction Many gold and silver ores are refractory to conventional processing technologies. Thus, precious metals recovery is uneconomic. These resources can consist of ores, flotation concentrates, mill tailings, and other reserves. The refractory nature of these materials can be ascribed to such components as iron sulfide minerals, silica minerals, tellurides, organic compounds, and sulfosalts. Precious metals locked within iron sulfide minerals account for a large number of refractory gold ores. These minerals consist principally of pyrite or arsenopyrite. They must be oxidized to liberate the encapsulated precious metal and allow its contact with the leaching agent. Carbonaceous gold ores represent a unique class of refractory precious metal ores in general. Not only does gold encapsulation by iron sulfide minerals occur (Hausen, 1985), but these ores also contain organic matter that interferes with gold recovery by cyanidation. Direct interference can be attributed to either occlusion of gold within organic matter or formation of a stable gold-carbon complex. The magnitude of this problem is debatable. Wells and Mullens (1973) examined two carbonaceous gold ores and found no association between the gold and carbonaceous material. A more common problem is indirect interference, whereby the aurocyanide complex formed during cyanidation is sorbed by the native organic matter and is not available for recovery. This phenomenon is referred to as "preg robbing" (Osseo-Asare et al., 1984; Hausen and Bucknam, 1984). Guay (1981) summarized various methods that can reduce preg robbing during processing of carbonaceous gold ores. However, some are not applicable to carbonaceous ores that have significant amounts of gold locked in iron sulfide minerals. Several methods exist for oxidizing iron sulfide minerals and rendering refractory precious metal ore amenable to conventional recovery processes. These include various embodiments of roasting (Jha and Kramer, 1984; Brown, 1984; Arriagada and Os-seo-Asare, 1984; Smith, 1986), pressure oxidation (Muir et al., 1984; Beattie et al., 1985; Thompson, 1986; Weir et al., 1986; Argall, 1986), and chemical oxidation (Scheiner, 1971; Jackson, 1983; Van Weert et al., 1986). Each process has been successfully used for refractory precious metal ores. In many instances, however, their use is precluded by capital and operating costs relative to the value of the ore. An alternative to these methods is microbial pretreatment - a biological process whereby iron sulfide minerals are degraded and the liberated precious metal values can be recovered by conventional technologies. Bioleaching refractory precious metal ores is a relatively new concept compared to roasting and chemical oxidation. It is rapidly becoming established as a viable pretreatment alternative. Numerous studies have been conducted in the laboratory and on a pilot scale (Yudina et al., 1979; Lawrence and Bruynesteyn, 1983; Pol 'kin et al., 1985; Marchant, 1985; Livesey-Goldblatt, 1985; Gibbs et al., 1986). Comparative tests have demonstrated that bioleaching can be equal to or better than roasting or pressure oxidation in terms of product recovery and process economics (Fridman and Savari, 1983; Livesy-Goldblatt et al., 1983; Karavaiko et al., 1985; Gilbert et al., 1986; Hackl et al., 1986). Bioleaching's main drawback is that pretreatment requires days rather than hours. This can lead to excessive operating costs for difficult-to-treat ores. INTRODUCTION One of the main advantages of the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) is its adaptability to varying rock conditions. This method is therefore successfully applied when complex geologic features are expected which cause uncertainties in the prognosis of the rock mass behaviour, as was the care at the Arlberg Expressway Tunnel. Furthermore, by employing the NATM problems are avoided when encountering varying geologic conditions or even extension fault zones along the tunnel, as was the case at the Dalaaser Tunnel and Perjen Tunnel. The NATM can also be used for rock and soil. The following examples will show how various rock conditions can be mastered. In accordance with the NATM all tunnels which will be discussed are road tunnels having a cross section area between 70 and 100 m2. The construction consists of a primary support, which ensures stress redistribution during excavation (Figure 1). The primary support is reinforced shotcrete strengthened by steel arches, when necessary, and rock bolts. When encountering rock pressure, swelling rock or soil, the primary support is suplemented by an invert arch. The purpose of the secondary lining is to increase the safety of the tunnel with regard to long-term stress redistribution processes or changes in rock mass properties as well as to protect the insulation. The secondary lining consists of cast concrete without reinforcement and is generally 0.25 or 0.30 m thick.

The known high grade mineral re- sources in the United States are fast becoming exhausted; viable new deposits are more difficult to find and more expensive to develop; operating and capital costs have increased to meet more stringent regulatory standards. By contrast, international producers enjoy a cost advantage as a result of higher mining grades, improving technological competence, and more favorable government support. The domestic base minerals industry is finding it more and more difficult to compete in world markets. It has become essentially a marginal industry today. The current philosophy of taxation in the United States has evolved over the past century. The structure of the taxing system is based on the assumption that a firm must be able to pay its tax imposts out of profits. In principle, firms incapable of supporting the tax load should be replaced by others that can do so. This philosophy applies equally well to the mining industry, so long as it remains economically healthy. However, mineral resources are finite. The situation in the domestic base mineral industry has changed fundamentally in recent times. For the reasons given above, much of the industry now cannot continue to compete profitably in the open world market; and there are no known alternative domes- tic mineral resources more capable of doing so. Under these circumstances it is important to consider the effect of taxation not only on profitability, but also on survivability.

I want to limit my remarks to epigenetic ore deposits, but do not necessarily subscribe to the classic theories of hydrothermal ore deposition. I will consider an epigenetic deposit as a primary deposit in which the economic minerals have been introduced subsequent to the formation of the enclosing rock, regardless of the source. Past ore discoveries have been made to a great extent by prospecting techniques that have remained relatively constant over the last many decades. In many cases the discoveries have been enlarged or enhanced with the use of technical tools such as geophysics, but theoretical geology, which should serve as a foundation for exploration, has shown little progress of practical importance since the turn of the century.

An important problem in mine operations is the classification of material as waste, low-grade stockpile and ore. This classification must often be made with blasthole data that are widely spaced and that have sampling errors. Geostatistical-simulation techniques combined with basic economic principles allow a procedure for classification that maximizes the expected profit. Geostatistical-simulation methods (Gaussian, indicator or annealing-based) allow the integration of hard and soft data in the creation of alternative, equally probable realizations of the mineral grades. At each location, for each realization one calculates the "profit" if the block were to be classified as ore or waste. The optimal classification is the one that maximizes expected profit (a maximum profit selec¬tion or MPS procedure). In this paper, the authors discuss the theoretical justification of the method and implementation details. The use of blasthole data from different types of mineral deposits, that is, different levels of continuity, are considered. The authors also show the efficacy of the procedure with different levels of sampling error. The increased revenue due to the MPS procedure and improved sampling is shown. The paper shows the geostatistical-simulation procedure and the uncertainty in block grades that result from incomplete and imperfect sampling. The optimal classification is presented. Optimal block classifications are transferred to realizable dig limits by hand-drawing polygonal boundaries. The results of the proposed method are compared to classification based on kriging. Limitations and areas of future work are identified.

In Roman and earlier civilizations the term cement was applied only to mixtures of lime, pozzolana, sand, water, etc., used as a mortar to bind larger stones. Today, portland cement, the subject of this section, can be briefly defined as follows: The product obtained by finely grinding clinker produced by calcining to incipient fusion (i.e., sintering) an intimate and properly proportioned mixture of argillaceous and calcareous materials. History The Egyptians were probably the first to join building stones with a mixture of sand and a cementitious material (i.e., having the property of or acting like cement). It is generally accepted that the cement used by the Egyptians on such structures as the Great Pyramid was calcined gypsum, Later the Greeks began to calcine limestone for use as a mortar with sand and water. Still later, broken brick and tile were added to the mortar to make the first concrete. The Greeks and Romans found that some sands produced mortars that were especially resistant to the action of water. Hydraulic (i.e., underwater-hardening) cements formed by combining slaked lime, water, and finely divided siliceous materials (e.g., pozzolana) possess superior strength and are capable of resisting the destructive action of water. They were used on the Pantheon, Colosseum, and other structures, some of which are still standing. In 1756 an English engineer, John Smeaton, found that an argillaceous limestone (i.e., containing an appreciable amount of clay as an impurity) produced a cement with greater resistance to the action of water. Despite Smeaton's findings, the use of the old mixture of lime and pozzolana long retained its popularity. Significant contributions in cement technology from England, Swe¬den, France, and Holland were made in the next 68 years. However, the invention of portland cement is generally credited to Joseph Aspdin, an Englishman, who in 1824 patented "portland cement." The name was selected because, on hardening, it resembled the natural building stone from the Isle of Portland, England. The patent features mixing ground limestone and argillaceous materials in appropriate proportions and calcining (i.e., expelling CO2 by roasting) the mixture. This superseded the existing practice of calcining naturally occurring argillaceous limestone. In about 1845 Isaac Johnson, also English, conducted experiments on proportioning the components and calcining them at higher tem¬peratures. His accomplishments are accepted as the beginning of the present-day portland cement industry. The U.S. cement industry originated with the demand for good hydraulic cement for building structures such as the Erie Canal, which was started in 1817. The first discovery of cement rock (i.e., naturally occurring argillaceous limestone with near-optimum ratios of calcium carbonate, alumina, and silica) near Fayetteville, N.Y., was made by C. White. In 1818, White secured a patent for the manufacture of natural cement from that deposit. Subsequently, several natural cement plants were built in 1830-1840 at Rosendale, N.Y., and in the Lehigh Valley of Pennsylvania. David Saylor, who participated in establishing a natural cement plant at Coplay, Pa., in 1850 discovered that a superior cement could be produced by calcining the rock at higher temperatures than hith¬erto. In 1871, Saylor obtained a patent and commenced the manufac¬ture of portland cement. By 1890, there were 17 portland cement plants in the United States with a combined annual output of 62,300 tons. At the end of 1970, the number of plants producing portland cement in the United States (including Puerto Rico) was 169, down from a maximum of 185 in 1967, with total annual shipments of 73.4 million tons valued at $1,298 million. (Fig. 1). In 1970, annual world production of hydraulic cement (which includes pozzolanic materials, hydraulic limes, natural cement, alumina cement, and portland cement, all of which are in current use in various parts of the world) reached 630 million tons (Table 1). The structure of an exploration model reflects a number of design considerations, one of which is the question or issue-to be investigated by the model. Thus, a model designed to evaluate the magnitude of risk and its economic implication to optimal decision making at each decision juncture of a multistage exploration architecture differs considerably from one designed to evaluate, say, the long run average cost of discovery, in which the architecture of exploration is suppressed and risk is simply an element of average cost. The perspective of the model examined in this paper is that exploration is investment in (purchase of) information and that the next stage of an exploration program is undertaken only when the expected value of information to be acquired in that stage exceeds its cost. The degree to which this perspective is honored influences considerably model design. Consider two design objectives:

The purpose of this paper is to outline briefly some basic principles of ground- water hydrology that have application in mine hydrology. The development of a mine below the water table pleads for accurate values to answers of hydrology problems. Such problems involve both an inflow of water without adequate drainage facilities and a deficiency of water for the required use. Methods which give acceptable quantitative values for the solution of many ground-water problems depend on rather simple geologic structures, characterized chiefly by isotropic rocks of considerable areal extent. Unfortunately, mining operations are likely to be centered where isotropic rocks are not present. Consequently, methods that attempt to show values of the storage and transmitting capacity of rocks in mining areas must be applied with caution. In spite of complex geology and apparent uniqueness of individual mines and quarries, adherence to some concepts of ground water used by -hydrologists in the study of behavior of wells should be helpful to mine operators, The work of the Ground Water Branch of the U.S. Geological Survey through its history has been confined largely to the study of ground water as a resource, In view of the increasing number of problems relating to drainage of mines, the Branch started an investigation of mine hydrology in 1945 under the direction of W.T. Stuart, Mr. Stuart and other workers are making detailed studies of specific mine areas. In the present paper an attempt is made to synthesize some facts about ground water into usable form for the typical mine operator. Mining operations that extend below the water table disturb the natural hydrologic regimen, Prior to development, the water table slopes away from the site of a mine in at least one direction, but as soon as development begins and water is removed from the mine, the mine becomes the apex of a depressed cone in the water table, causing a convergence in the flow of water toward the mine. The behavior of the cone of depression, as it tends to deepen and increase in areal extent when the mine deepens, is related to the rate of withdrawal of water necessary to keep the mine dry. The significance and nature of the cone of depression in the vicinity of pumped wells has been studied by ground-water hydrologists for years, but the cone caused by pumping water from mines has generally been less systematically appraised.

In 1971, during the planning and design stages of a $300 million expansion, the Iron Ore Company of Canada Ltd. through its Engineers, Canadian Bechtel Ltd., came out with a preliminary request for two (2) 10,000 LTPH belt conveyor scale systems. These Systems were to provide weighing accuracies within 2.5% of the iron ore pellets and concentrates in transit on two (2) 72" wide conveyors from the stockpiles to the ships. Each conveyor system would be fed by a rail mounted bucket wheel reclaimer, with the conveyed material moving directly to the ship loaders with no inter- mediate surge and/or storage bins between the stockpiles and the ships. The bucket wheel reclaimer discharge rates would vary from 0-9600 LTPH in cyclic periods, with the periods varying from 1-5 minutes - dependent on the level of the reclaim buckets in relation to the stockpile as well as the slewing rate of the reclaimer. There would be frequent interruptions for bucket wheel repositioning (laterally and vertically), changing ship holds, and trimming ship holds. These frequent zero flow conditions, approximately 500 per 150,000 ton ship, could last 1-5 minutes. In addition, the conveyors on which the scales were to be mounted would be over the water and subject to the wind and cold of Northern Quebec. These Systems would be in use 350 working days of the year and would load 30,000,000 LT/yr. (An average of 90,000/working day).

1- Importance of Shafts for the Exploration and Extraction of Coal Deposits Coal mining in the Federal Republic of Germany is carried out in a depth between 800 and 1200 m below sea level (Fig. 1). The shortest connections underground in a mine and up to the surface are vertical shafts. Such shafts assume, with ventilation, manriding and the winding of material, the most important functions for the maintenance of mining operations. In the German coal mining industry, a difference is made between the main shafts providing a direct access from the surface to the deposits, and the so-called "blindshafts" which serve as a connection between two or several haulage levels underground. INTRODUCTION Decision-making in the design and construction of underground facilities must be made under conditions of varying geologic uncertainty, uncertainty which can have a major cost impact if not properly regarded. Of the two approaches for dealing with this variability, preparing for the "worst" anticipated conditions and optimizing design and construction in-situ, preparing for the "worst" conditions is the more if not solely conventionally practiced method in the United States. While the conventional approach is recognized at times to be extremely overconservative, it will remain preferred until a more adaptable method is shown to be economically superior. This paper presents research aimed at providing just such answers as to when and if an adaptable tunnel design and construction approach is more cost effective than a non-adaptable one. To fully understand the characteristics of this choice between adaptable and conventional tunneling alternatives a summary discussion of adaptable methods is presented. An acknowledgement of the importance of geologic and other factor uncertainties in making this decision leads to the adoption of decision analysis as a quantitative methodology for formalizing the problem. Exercising this methodology on three prototypical tunneling scenarios--urban deep, urban shallow, and transmountain--allows an isolation and ranking of the most crucial factors in making the basic approach decision. One scenario, a transmountain highway tunnel, is carried further through a detailed probabilistic analysis to show under what conditions of varying uncertainty adaptable approaches possess economic advantages.

An efficient state-of-the-art dynamic model to simulate and predict the rate of water production in longwall coal mining operations was developed as a tool for mine planning purposes. The model can also provide an estimate of any potential resultant hydrogeological impacts of an operation via an array of element-specific single-valued parameters referred to as the field rating indices. The computational procedure was designed to fully exploit the benefits of hydrogeotechnology and utilize a combination of conceptual, physical, empirical, and numerical approaches to define, characterize, analyze, and evaluate flow con- trolling properties of fractured rock systems. The model presented here provides a dynamic prediction method for highly fractured flow; a practical tool in mine and water control planning; and a cost-effective means of assessing, based on the best available technology, the impacts of mining on the water resources within a mining environment to satisfy local and federal regulatory requirements. Unique features include consideration of laminar and non-darcian flow domains in double-porosity-pressure hydrogeological media.

Introduction Hydrogen peroxide is known to the mining industry as a powerful oxidant. able to attack and to destroy cyanide, the most important leaching reagent (Knorre and Griffiths, 1984; Griffiths, 1988; Griffiths, 1988). [ ] The most recent development, however, is the use of H2O2 as an oxidant in the cyanidation of precious metals. This application may appear to be a contradiction to the above mentioned detoxification process. This can, indeed, be the case if certain conditions are not considered carefully. Degussa has developed a new process to enable the application of H2O, in this field without having any detrimental effect on the cyanide. The incentive to seek an oxygen supplier like H2O2 instead of air was the fact that one of the most important conditions for the fast dissolution of gold is the presence of physically dissolved oxygen in the pulp (Kydryk and Kellog, 1954; Warstell, 1987). [ ] Complete gold recovery within a reasonable leaching time may only be achieved if the pulp is saturated with dissolved oxygen. Gold losses in leach operations mainly occur due to the following reasons: In some cases, the saturation of oxygen in the pulp cannot be achieved by aeration due to the difficulty to transfer oxygen from the gaseous into the liquid phase. This happens, for example, in pulps with a high viscosity. In such cases, even violent aeration only results in a low concentration of dissolved oxygen in the pulp. In any case, the starting phase of leaching requires the highest amount of oxygen. Therefore, it is especially important to raise the dissolved oxygen level to saturation in the starting phase. Peroxide assisted leach process (PAL) The intention of the process is to introduce oxygen in a liquid form. As a result of intensive research work, it could be shown that hydrogen peroxide can be used as a source of oxygen in the leaching of gold ores. To avoid side reactions, the following conditions must be applied: Hydrogen peroxide must be diluted before it is added to the pulp. The dosage of H2O, must be properly regulated based on the oxygen level of the pulp. An important part of the continuous O, control is a special oxygen electrode, which resists the extremely abrasive action of the pulp.

"Gold rush" is usually associated the western United States - California, Nevada, and Colorado. The southeast section of the nation is known more for its rice, textiles, tobacco, indigo, and cotton. This area, though, is where it all began with gold in this country. The United States' first gold rush, in fact, is said to have started with the discovery of a 7.7-kg (17-1b) nugget in the Piedmont section of the Carolinas in 1799, some 50 years before the rush to California. The Carolina gold rush continued intermittently through 1942 when the Federal Government shut down all gold operations. Strong gold prices throughout the early part of this decade and new extractive technologies spurred a small resurgence of gold operations in South Carolina. Mind you, this is not Nevada with its flood of geologists and mining companies. Nor are there any 7.7 kg (17 lb) nuggets being discovered. But Ridgeway Mining Co., a joint venture between Kennecott Corp. and Galactic Resources, has set about mining 51 Mt (56 million st) of low-grade ore containing an estimated 43.5 t (1.4 million oz) of recoverable gold. The open pit, carbon-in-leach operation is located near the town of Ridgeway in South Carolina, about 32 km (20 miles) north of Columbia. Carolina gold North and east of Ridgeway, Piedmont Mining Co. operates the historic Haile gold mine near Kershaw, SC. And Brewer Mining Co. operates the nearby Brewer deposit. Between 1829 and 1942, South Carolina gold mines produced 10 t (318,800 oz) of gold. It all began in 1799 when Conrad Reed, son of a German immigrant farmer, found the 7.7 kg (17 lb) nugget in Little Meadow Creek, NC. His father thought the rock was worthless and used it as a doorstop, so the story goes. It took nearly three years before Conrad's father decided his doorstop was indeed gold. Gold was later discovered in the Greenville district of South Carolina. And, in 1828, Benjamin Haile discovered gold in a stream that ran through his property in Lancaster County, SC. Haile's mine became South Carolina's most famous and most productive gold mine, producing more than 7.8 t (250,000 oz). At first, miners worked the stream beds of Haile's property.
