The Howe Coal Company located in Leflore County, Oklahoma is mining the Oklahoma Lower Hartshorne Coal bed which ranges in thickness from 38" to 42" and dips approximately 7 degrees to the Northeast. The Lower Hartshorne bed lies within the Hartshorne sandstone in Oklahoma but is as much as 60 feet above this sandstone formation in Arkansas. This coal bed extends throughout the Arkansas Oklahoma coal basin, which is about 50 miles wide and 180 miles long and progresses from a semi anthracite in Arkansas to a low-volatile coal in the eastern part of the Oklahoma to a high-volatile coal in the western area. The Howe Mine #1 in the eastern area is mining a low-volatile bituminous coal which has been used as metallurgical coal since the early 1900's as evidence of Bee-hive coke ovens still remain near the town Howe, a few miles northwest of the mine site. The Howe Mine is the first mine in the area to use modern mining equipment, however, numerous punch mines have been worked along the outcrop south of the mine site dating from 1900 with the last closing in 1965. The coal characteristics of the Lower Hartshorne rival the Pocahontas seam in chemistry and coking qualities. This paper will be concerned with the preparation of the coal for the Japanese steel market. The three man crew necessary to operate the plant are the operator, the helper, and the equipment operator needed to feed the raw coal hopper. An additional equipment operator is available on the day shift for coal loading and moving the clean coal to the storage pile as the area under the clean coal belt is only large enough for 1 shifts production. We are at present running the plant on a 2 shift per day basis.

Many papers 'have been publihed on the role of the bacterium.Thiobacillus ferrooxidans in the oxidation of reduced sulfur compounds, and years of research have established the following environmental factors, which influence biological oxidation. 1. Oxygen is required for the oxidation of reduced sulfur compounds to the sulfate form. Sufficient oxygen. is available from the air, consequently, it is of importance to get the air to the bacteria. 2. The bacteria are active in the pH range 1.4 3.5. Maximum activity occurs at pH 2..0 - 2.8. 3. -In order to allow the bacterial populations to expand, certain essential nutrients must be available. Nitrogen has to be supplied for the production of body protein, and ammonia is the source most readily accepted by the bacteria. Carbon dioxide is the only utilizable source of carbon and the small amounts available in air are the primary source of this element. Small amounts of phosphate, manganese,, potassium,. calcium. and magnesium are also required. These trace minerals are available from the water and host rock in sufficient quantities. 4. Water is required as a carrier for the oxygen carbon dioxide and other nutrients, as-well as a solvent for the metallic sulfates produced. The bacteria are motile and the water allows the bacterial populations to spread:: bacterial activity ceases if the equilibrium relative humidity drops below 100%. 5.-optimum bacterial activity occurs at temperatures of 34 - 35°.C (93 -.95° F). All activity ceases above 45° C. At lower temperatures, activity its dramatically decreased, but there is still a significant amount at 10 - 11° C.- Thiobacillus ferruoxidans has been isolated from a mine with a year round temperature of 3° C. 6. Unpublished results from our laboratory show that biological leach ore oxidation takes place during the rest periods at the same rate as during the wet leaching periods providing there is a film of moisture remaining around the particles. Optimum conditions can be readily achieved in the laboratory, but application of our laboratory knowledge to commercial leaching dumps is riot as simple. Attempts to achieve improved environmental conditions for the bacteria in leaching dumps would require substantial capital investment and careful planning of leaching operations. This paper

During the past decade, since the appearance of Popoff's (1966) review of grade tonnage calculations, it has become evident that defining a new method which could be followed step by step by a technician and which would improve reserve estimation was not a simple thing to do. Some concepts have emerged though, and most definitions of ore reserve now require a statement of reliability (USGS, 1975; and Zwarten-dyke, 1976). Exactly how the reliability should be computed is not a straightforward process. It also became apparent that not only was reliability a requirement but that additional questions such as how to predict mining re- serves from geological reserves were to be asked. In fact what became obvious is that specific models have to be designed for each type of mine and for each type of question which is asked. Most methods can be encased within a unique general geostatistical, model, but it takes considerable custom tailoring, and there are still questions that are left unanswered. In this chapter, before giving techniques, we intend to first review what should be required from a grade tonnage calculation done at the exploration stage. If the final objective is still to specify a tonnage and grade, with eventually a reliability, many qualifications have to be made before quoting, and of course, calculating these two numbers. Then the currently avail- able methods will be reviewed and future trends will be shown; finally a few case studies will be given and recommendations about the choice of a model will be made.

"The East Side Access (ESA) CM005 Contract - Manhattan South Structures - consists of the installation of the waterproofing and final concrete lining for railroad tunnels, 3-Level Wye track turnout structures, segments of the Main Cavern Station, and a series of Ventilation Structures excavated beneath the existing Metro North Railroad (MNR) Grand Central Terminal. Several key team decisions made collectively by the Construction Manager (CM), Designer, and the Contractor has allowed the scheduled construction duration of 29 months to be maintained. These strategies include the use of alternate design and construction methods, including the use of pneumatically applied concrete lining and precast lining. This paper discusses these strategies, and illustrates how successful teamwork and cooperation during the execution of a large-scale construction project can lead to lowering costs, improving quality, and maintaining the overall project schedule. INTRODUCTION The East Side Access Project The Long Island Railroad (LIRR) currently transports commuters from Long Island into Manhattan, terminating at the already over congested Penn Station on the west side of Manhattan. Once completed, the ESA Project will provide LIRR commuters direct access to the east side of Manhattan underneath Grand Central Terminal. The ESA Project will help alleviate the congestion at Penn Station, which currently accommodate the NJ Transit, Amtrak, and LIRR lines; reduce travel time for LIRR passengers traveling to the east side of Manhattan and facilitate connections to the NYCT Subway System and Metro North Rail Road. The ESA Project includes building new tunnels and facilities under Manhattan and Queens. (See Figure 1).The Manhattan Alignment In the Manhattan segment of the ESA Project the excavation in hard rock of tunnels, cross passages, caverns and shafts has been completed by tunnel boring machines, drill and blast, and road header. The construction of the structural concrete final lining, interior structures and fit-out of the previously excavated caverns and tunnels are currently being performed under Contract CM005 Manhattan South Structures awarded to Michels Corporation and Contract CM006 Manhattan North Structures awarded to Frontier Kemper Constructors Inc. This paper focuses on the design and construction aspects of Contract CM005 which is the first ESA Contract in Manhattan to successfully construct concrete final linings in pre-existing excavated areas."

The gradual depletion of high-grade sulphide mineral deposits has turned the attention of the mineral industry to the recovery of metals from the oxides and silicates. Anionic (fatty acid) and cationic collectors have in some cases made flotation of non-sulphides possible, although in general, flotation of oxide ores is not as yet an economic process. Consequently, many attempts have been made to sulphidize the surface of the relevant oxide mineral and thus make it amenable to flotation. (1) (2) (3) In recent years, Bautista and Sollenberger(4) have investigated the conversion of a number of oxides to sulphides by reacting them with molten sulpur. This paper presents the results of investigations carried out at the School of Mineral and Metallurgical Engineering at the University of Minnesota to study the flotation characteristics of some sulphidized minerals. It is divided into two parts; Part I describes the sulphidization of a number of oxides and a silicate, and Part II presents the flotation behavior of the products of sulphidization.

Nano clay mineral particles such as kaolinite — with primary particles typically smaller than 2 μm in size — can cause significant problems in flotation processes and tailings disposal, including the processing of Florida phosphate rock and Canadian oil sands. In this study, the consolidated state of flocculated kaolinite sediment was examined, and high-resolution X-ray microtomography (HRXMT) was applied to describe the structure of the consolidated sediment. Using this tomographic information, the complex geometry of the channel network structure for the consolidated flocs was established for the first time. With the establishment of the experimental channel network structure, permeabilities were estimated by flow simulation using the Lattice Boltzmann method. Results for kaolinite sediment with and without polymer are compared and discussed. Results for flocculated kaolinite sediment in a gravitational field are also presented and discussed. The results show that as polymer dosage increases, the permeability of flocculated kaolinite sediment increases, and as suspension pH increases, the permeability of flocculated kaolinite sediment decreases.

Any increasing number of restrictions are being placed on mining management's ability to pursue profit. Raw materials pricing, the cost of capital equipment, labor cost, and overhead costs, are becoming more difficult to control. Cost reduction is one of the few remaining areas in which management may still exercise its profit making ability. Equipment maintenance is an area where mine and mill management can readily reduce costs and increase profits. Why is this possible? First, maintenance costs comprise a large portion of total operating cost. Thirty to sixty percent of the operating cost dollar is not unusual. Even a relatively small percentage reduction in this cost represents a very sizeable increase to mining profitability.

Paper and paperboard manufacturers need to quantify the carbon footprint and environmental impact of their products to satisfy market, social and government demands. Coated paper products contain minerals, such as kaolin and calcium carbonate, at significant levels; some coated paper grades have mineral contents as high as 45% by weight. Some uncoated paper has no mineral content, but most uncoated paper contains some mineral to improve appearance, process efficiency and cost. Super-calendared paper grades can contain levels of mineral up to 35% by weight. This paper describes how to calculate the carbon footprint of kaolin and calcium carbonate minerals used for white pigments. The carbon footprint of these minerals strongly correlates to the primary energy sources, final product form and energy used to calcine kaolin and lime. Kaolin and calcium carbonate pigments have a favorable impact on the carbon footprint of paper and paperboard products by directly substituting for fiber and by reducing the energy needed for paper making. The Mule Canyon gold deposit, located 14 miles ESE of Battle Mountain, Nevada, was discovered in 1986 as the result of a GFMC grass-roots exploration program. Drilling to date has identified six discrete orebodies which contain a demonstrated gold reserve of 8.487 million tons at an average grade of 0.136 oz/ton, totaling 1,152,000 ounces. Mineralization is associated with argillic alteration and silicification, localized along NNW trending high-angle faults within Miocene basaltic andesites. Trace element geochemistry at Mule Canyon is typical of upper level hot spring precious metal systems, displaying elevated Ag, As, Sb, Hg, and Se.

It is shown that dewatering of fine coal particles (D50 : 21 microns) is enhanced near the point of zero charge. The coal surface is modified by the addition of copper ions and adjusting pH to precipitate surface active metal hydroxy species which promote agglomeration and produce low moisture cakes. Filtration kinetics data are used in calculating filter cake parameters from an integrated form of Darcy's law. The influence of copper ions and pH on filter cake parameters and correlations among them are presented.

Flotation, water-washing cyclones (hydrocyclones) and spiral concentrators are the three process units most commonly utilised in fine coal preparation. The results of testwork conducted on these three units will be presented and their performance and separation characteristics examined in detail. In particular, the dependence of the separation characteristics of each unit on particle size and the constraint this places on product quality (ash and sulphur levels) will be discussed. This dependence will be shown to be a critical criterion in the selection of fine coal circuits.

The United States Bureau of Mines conducted research on high-intensity magnetic separation methods for upgrading tantalum concentrates from Alabama. Process flow sheets were studied to maximize tin removal and minimize tantalum loss. Using laboratory-scale equipment, concentrates were produced which contained over 65% combined Ta2O5-Nb2O5. Up to 78% of the tin was recovered as a byproduct, containing about 70% SnO2. Only 1 to 5% of the tantalum reported with the tin byproduct. The producer subsequently incorporated high-intensity magnetic separation into its process flow sheet to provide concentrates for the National Defense Stockpile.

Selective in-plant breakage was investigated at a Central Queensland, Australia mine. Component seams and size fractions from in-plant samples were characterized petrographically and probability analysis of vitrinite reflectance data used to track the distribution of seam proportions through the plant. Results show that the 2 seams reported differentially to coarse and fine circuits, mainly as a function of coal type rather than rank. Seams were also preferentially concentrated in different size fractions of the coarse circuit. Breakage in the coarse coal centrifuge generated approximately 4% of -0.5 mm fines, but was not seam specific.

Most iron ores treated by the R-N direct reduction process yield metallic iron products considerably lower in titanium, manganese, and chromium oxides and alkaline metal sulfates/sulfides than were contained in the original ores. These metallic iron products are suitable as feed stock for the open hearth and electric steel-making furnaces. The elements which are rejected in part are acceptable in the product since the product is designed to by-pass the blast furnace. R-N reduction conditions (PCO+H2-1 atmosphere, 1830° to 2150° F.) are adjusted for each ore. The iron ore which is reduced to 90 to 95 percent metallic iron is then subjected to the conventional beneficiation techniques. Under these conditions, 55 to 80 percent of titanium oxides, 75 to 95 percent of manganese oxides, 60 to 90 percent of chromium oxides and up to 97 percent of alkaline metal sulfates contained in the ore are rejected with the gangue to the non- magnetic tailings. The metallic iron products illustrated in this work contained 89 to 96 percent total iron, one to five percent TiO2, 0.2 to one percent MnO, 0.3 to 1.6 percent Cr2O3 and/or up to one percent alkaline metal sulfide. Usually only one of these components was present. Recoveries ranged from 80 to 96 percent of the iron in ore.

Design and optimization of open pit limits are of paramount importance because they provide information for evaluating the economic potential of a mineral deposit and for developing short and long range mine plans. Many algorithms and their modifications have been used to design and optimize open pit limits. These algorithms have provided mine planning engineers with pertinent information in designing, optimizing and extracting ore reserves by open pit technology. However, they do not address the random field properties associated with the ore grades and reserves and commodity prices, and thus, fail to yield the truly optimized pit limits in any time horizon. In this paper, a new algorithm, MCSIMFNN, which overcomes these limitations is proposed and used to optimize open pit limits. The random field properties of the ore grade and reserves have been modelled using the modified conditional simulation based on the best linear unbiased estimation and local average subdivision techniques. Artificial neural networks are used to classify the blocks into classes based on their conditioned values. The error back propagation algorithm, in the neural networks, is used to optimize the pit limits by minimizing the desired and actual outputs error in a multi- layer perceptron under the pit wall slope constraints. The optimized pit value obtained by this algorithm has been compared to that from the Lerchs-Grossman's algorithm in a case study. The results are the same, but in random multivariable states, the MCSI MFNN algorithm is the most suitable for pit optimization. The method is also fast since it mimics the operation of the brain in the solution of the pit optimization problem.

In recent years increasing attention has been given to improving both the chemical and physical properties of sinter. The first step toward this goal was the production of a self-fluxing-sinter. More recently, blast-furnace operators have found that significant improvements in blast-furnace performance can be achieved by improving and controlling the physical size of the sinter. The results of full-scale blast-furnace tests have shown that blast-furnace production can be improved by using a closely sized agglomerate. The improvements obtained by the use of pellets, a closely sized agglomerate, are well known. In contrast, blast furnaces charged with sinter having a wide size spectrum have generally not yielded results as satisfactory as those from furnaces 1) * charged with pellets. Beginning in 1958, Appleby-Frodingham charged plus 3/8-inch sinter to their blast furnaces. Further tests by other companies in Canada, 2) the United States, 3) and Australia showed that blast-furnace production could be improved by about one percent when the plus 3/8-inch material in the burden was increased by one percent. Because of the promising results obtained with screened sinter, an extensive test program was initiated to determine an effective means of producing sized sinter in U. S. Steel's sinter plants. This paper describes the work done by the Applied Research Laboratory in this program.

Introduction Surface mining is a business, and the objective of most businesses is to make as much money as possible within certain responsible constraints. Businesses normally measure their potential to make money by estimating the discounted cash flow rate of return on new projects or the net present value for ongoing projects. These estimators of profitability are calculated using the following well-known equation: [ ] where i is the year, n is the total number of years, A, is the after tax net cash generation in year I, r is the discount rate and NPV is the net present value. In its simplest form, when the value of r makes the NPV equal to zero, the discounted cash flow-rate of return (DCF-ROR) is defined. The maximum economically recoverable reserve is identified at the point where the NPV or DCF-ROR is at a maximum. Depending on the measure used (DCF-ROR or discount rate) for calculating the NPV, the definition of recoverable reserve will be different for exactly the same deposit. Maximization of the measure of profitability and the economically recoverable reserves should not be separated from the mining method and sequence of exploiting the reserve. The surface mining methods may involve multiple-pass development of the resource, mining to the ultimate limit in one pass or a combination of the two methods with backfill. Multiple-pass development When planning a multiple-pass mining operation, it is important to determine the width of pit expansions that are appropriate for a specific situation. Production personnel typically want wide, open work areas where operations can be set up to run at peak efficiency. While this is understandable, the trade-off between highly efficient production operations and an overinvestment in stripping should be carefully weighed. As long as safety is not compromised, a few cents per bank cubic yard increase in operating cost due to lower productivity by working in more confined spaces may well be offset by a decrease in the overall short-term stripping requirements. A mini study on productivity and cost should help quantify this cost before deciding on minimum phasing requirements. The bigger challenge associated with establishing smaller work areas is securing operations and management buy-in to marginally lower productivity when reporting results. When cost reduction is the important management goal and everyone is focusing on unit costs, one sometimes loses sight of the goal of total cost management and, even more importantly, maximum profitability. The first pit should be defined by the first grouping of recoverable mineral that has the highest after-tax unit value and forms a feasible mining unit. The assumed mining of the first pit should be followed by the assumed mining of the second most profitable practical pit or pit expansion. If this process of grouping and sequencing is followed until the profitability approaches zero, the general sequence required to extract the maximum economically recoverable reserve is identified. The curve in Fig. 1 is constructed for a rate of production, R, and a quality management strategy, Q, by calculating the NPV for a series of sequences, with each sequence assuming that the operations are terminated on successively lower profit pits. These values are plotted to form the curve in Fig. 1. If the operation ceases on a pit that has too high of a profit, opportunity is lost, and the NPV is lower than the maximum. The NPV curve peaks and starts to decline before the zero-profit pit is assumed mined. This occurs because the money invested in advanced stripping would have made more money invested at the discount rate than by mining the next pit expansion. Therefore, the maximum economically recoverable reserve is defined by the pit limit corresponding to the maximum NPV. There may be an opportunity to refine the definition of the "ultimate pit" around the maximum-value point. The precise definition of the ultimate pit early in the mine life may or may not be important today, depending on how far off in the future these limits will be reached. The Galore Creek copper deposits lie in the Stikine River district of northwest British Columbia, a largely undeveloped region which possesses rugged mountain terrain with deeply incised valleys which support dense undergrowth. Timberline is normally at about 1300 m (4265 ft) and the higher levels contain glacial systems and large ice fields with peaks rising to 3500 m (I 1,483 ft). A location map of the Galore Creek area is given in Fig. 1. In the late 1920s, field parties under the direction of F.A. Kerr (1948) of the Geological Survey of Canada completed geological surveys of the district. Primary access for this work was provided by riverboats on the Stikine and Iskut Rivers. Kerr's party had to contend with extremely difficult travel conditions that required considerable backpacking, augmented by pack dogs in certain cases. Absence of ground control led Kerr to establish his own topographic maps. Among the geological data established was the recognition [ ] that small bodies of orthoclase porphyry in the district are often well mineralized with base metal sulfides. Copper mineralization in the upper Galore Creek valley, a tributary of Scud River which flows into the Stikine River some 80 km (50 miles) south of the small settlement of Telegraph Creek, was originally discovered during aerial reconnaissance by M. Morrison and W. Buckholz while prospecting for Hudson Bay Exploration and Development Co. Ltd. in 1955. Malachite- and azurite-stained out- crops in several parts of the Galore Creek watershed are clearly visible from distances of 500 m ( 1640 ft) or more. Claims were staked in 1956 and the copper showings were partly mapped, trenched, and investigated by shallow diamond drilling. Because of the remoteness of the area and higher priorities for expenditures elsewhere, no further work was undertaken and most of the claims were allowed to expire.

This paper will concern the processing of kaolin clays from the sedimentary deposits of Georgia and South Carolina, While the major processing steps will be touched on briefly, emphasis will be given to the dewatering of the clay-water slurries (slips) formed in the processing of kaolin clays The dewatering steps discussed will include gravity settling, centrifugal dewatering, vacuum filtration, and thermal dryings Of these dewatering steps particular attention will be given to vacuum filtration and the variables affecting filtration of these kaolin clays.
