Quartz crystals are the raw material from which are made the crystal units utilized in filters and oscillators so vital to the performance of all long distance communications systems. These devices act as the heart of equipment that permits a single telephone cable to carry hundreds of conversations simultaneously. Quartz crystals are of value in communications because of this piezoelectric nature, that is when an electric signal is applied to the quartz, there is a resulting mechanical motion and conversely, a mechanical stress results in an electrical output signal. A plate cut from a quartz crystal will oscillate at some specific frequency, which is determined by the physical dimension of the plate. During the early stages of telephony, all quartz plates were cut from natural quartz, which was imported mainly from Brazil. Since the source of this important raw material was based upon a foreign supply which is located at a great distance from the user and could be vulnerable in time of a national emergent, it became necessary to maintain a large inventory of this strategic material. Also due to the considerable cost of natural crystals of a size and quality suitable for Bell System use, an investigation was made by Bell Laboratories into the possibility of developing a substitute material. The effort was successful and led to a joint development program between Bell Laboratories and Western Electric. This program brought about the design of manufacturing facilities capable of producing large quantities of cultured quartz at Western's Merrimack Valley Works, No. Andover, Massachusetts.

Since the initiation of continuous vacuum filtration over a half a century ago, control of the performance of these units has been largely in the hands of the plant operators, Obviously there has been the introduction of variable speed drives, adjustable speed feed slurry agitation, vacuum control, etc. However, control of , filtration rate, cake moisture content, dissolved solids recovery by cake washing and dryness of solids where thermal drying is practiced is primarily up to the operators judgment and the settings he imposes on the controls he regulates, - filter cycle time, submergence, vacuum level, filter medium condition, wash water- rate, and other such factors. While this may seem to indicate that good operators are a paramount necessity, and certainly always desirable, a considerably more vital factor is a properly designed filter and filter station for the particular application. With improper design, highly skilled operator control will still leave much to be desired in the way of process performance. On the other hand, with correct design and application, the operator can easily and quickly control normal plant surges and quality variations within the flow sheet. Due to the growing complexity and inter dependency between the various processing steps in the modern flow sheet as well as the rising costs of capital investment, labor, maintenance, and losses involved with off quality product or insufficient recovery, automatic or inherent performance control of many of the unit operations within the metallurgical mill must be achieved. Continuous filtration should and can be susceptible to such control. However, as every instrument engineer knows, before control and automation can be achieved, a basic understanding of the operation is mandatory. This is primarily due to three factors. First, as in so many control applications, it may not be possible or feasible to measure the factor that it is desired to control. Thus, secondary variables that influence the major factor are substituted for control purposes. Secondly, it is always desirable to take advantage of any ?self-regulation? within the operation being performed on the equipment. In so doing, not only will automatic control be facilitated, but instrumentation is minimized while experiencing most efficient operation. Finally, automatic control is not a cure-all for improper process and equipment design and application. Hanging instruments on such an operation can be compared to constructing a sizable building on sand, Results will be disappointing.

The use of EPB shields in the so-called mixed face conditions has set new demands to man and machine in EPB shield tunneling. EPB shields were initially conceived to drive in the pressurized closed mode in soft ground, whereas hard rock TBMs were designed to work in the unpressurized open mode. The present use of EPB shields in hard rock and mixed face conditions requires the combination of both technologies by finding best compromise solutions. This paper deals firstly with the geotechnical and mechanical interactions between machine and ground. Further on the critical points such as tool wear and tool replacement are exposed, together with a proposal of best solutions.

Tailings disposal has been a problem for the mining engineer since the beginning of the metal milling process. Disposal systems in common use have evolved as the most economic method for the disposal of an unwanted waste material within the disposal restrictions in force at the time of construction. As restrictions are constantly being expanded, the design requirements for tailings disposal systems are also being enlarged. However, proper design will always be to provide the most economic disposal system that will meet current safety and pollution requirements. This paper presents a brief description of some of the design features of tailings disposal systems in common use and presents specific design features of the gypsum tailings disposal pond at Kimberley, British Columbia, owned and operated by Cominco Ltd.

The surface of chalcopyrite was studied in situ in aqueous solution by an atomic force microscopy (AFM). The AFM images showed that some absorbate in patches was detected on the mineral surface, after the chalcopyrite sample was soaked in 5x10-4M potassium ethyl xanthate (KEX) solution at pH 11 for 10 minutes. These patches increased in size with time elapsing. At the same time, as shown by the obtained AFM force curves, the adhesion between the AFM tip and the substrate increased greatly due to the adsorption. Rinsing with ethanol removed the absorbate from the chalcopyrite surface, as well as the big adhesion observed in KEX solution.

In the UK as existing face capacity is replaced, many of the new faces will have higher installed powers and be located in zones of higher strata temperature. These factors coupled with the need to increase production will result in more faces experiencing environmental difficulies, especially with respect to climatic conditions. In many cases these problems are unlikely to be solved, as in the past, by simply increasing the face air quantity. Therefore other techniques including refrigeration will be necessary, possibly requiring major capital and operational expenditure. It is easy to spend large capital sums and incur high operational expenditure without achieving the desired amount of climatic control. There is therefore a great need for reliable prediction techniques to aid in the making of sound, informed decisions which will have a significant influence in the long term on the level of production costs. A computer program able to predict the heat flows and resultant climatic conditions on a long¬wall coalfaces has been developed. Throughout it's development underground measurements have been used to validate the computer model and it has been shown that for an advancing coalface under normal production conditions that the program predicts the climate to within 1°C of the measured conditions. This paper outlines a number of methods available to improve climatic conditions on longwall faces. The coalface temperature prediction program is used to quantify the effects of these methods on the climatic conditions for a model coalface and a comparison is given. In conclusion a cool¬ing strategy for longwall faces is outlined.

It has been observed that the rock debris of a strain burst event are often in the mode of tensile fracture. Seismic waves could create tensile fractures in the material nearby reflecting surfaces, such as at the boundary of the fracture zone and the rock surface of an underground space. The fractured rock could be ejected to the space when the seismic waves are powerful enough. The average ejection velocity of the ejected rock is a measure of the magnitude of a burst event. The ejection velocity is directly associated with the released energy from the seismic waves and with the strain energy stored in the rock prior to the burst. In some cases, the seismic wave induced tensile fracture and the energy conversion occur in successive moments during bursting. In this paper, tensile fracture caused by seismic waves is investigated through an 1D model. The relationship of the average ejection velocity of the ejected rock in a rockburst event is analytically established with the energy of the seismic waves and the strain energy stored in the rock.

Bergbau AG Niederrhein, a subsidiary of Ruhrkohle AG; Essen, Germany, is working coal mines on both sides of the Rhine River. The Prosper Mine in the City of Bottrop has a production of about 13,000 tons per day and has been in operation since the turn of the century. Mining has moved to the north as coal deposits south of Bottrop are exhausted. To facilitate ventilation, material handling, and transportation new shafts are being constructed in the northern coal fields. The Prosper 10 shaft is being sunk to develop the Prosper - Haniel coal field which has reserves of 280 million tons. In October, 1976 Bergbau AG Niederrhein awarded the shaft sinking contract for the 1047 m deep, 8 m inside diameter Prosper 10 shaft to Gewerkschaft Walter; Essen, Germany. Construction costs will amount to about 40 million DM with construction completion scheduled for 1981. GEOLOGY The shaft, located near the town of Kirchhellen north Bottrop, is being sunk in the Grafenwalder Horst between two faults on the south west flank of the Kirchheller Anticline. 270 m of upper cretaceus sands and marls overlay sandstone bedrock at the shaft location. The upper 124 m of this section contain highly saturated sands interspersed with marl. In order to successfully sink the shaft through this section, ground stabilization by freezing was used.

This paper reviews the technical advice available to support companies in the delivery of social aspects of sustainable development. It will draw on diverse experience from the sparsely populated plains of the Central African Republic, one of the poorest countries in the world, to the densely populated villages of the Carpathian Mountains in Slovakia. It will review basic requirements for the consideration of social issues, as well as guidance on international best practice. It will review: the legal basis; coverage; consideration of alternatives; scope; inclusive decision-making; indicator development; impact monitoring and evaluation. The paper will discuss the breadth and depth of social issues for consideration, including the realms of responsibility of a company in terms of social development in different operating environments. The extractive industries invest substantial amounts of money which typically dwarfs local development, health or education budgets. Capacity building for local authorities is not directly the role of the company, but when understood as a strategy for risk management, it can play a vital part of sustainable development that benefits the local community and reduces the risk of social problems impacting profits. The paper will argue that social impact assessment is most effective when the outcomes are in line with a company?s principles and support core business practices. It is important that social impact assessment is viewed as an integral part of project decision-making and moves away from mistrusted PR and unsustainable philanthropy toward partnership, which finds suitable and appropriate solutions delivering ?win-win? outcomes. While development should not be seen as a direct company objective, engaging with development actors to better understand the operating context can ensure that social investment complements existing initiatives. The paper will also present different mechanisms for engaging with local actors, as well as developing successful social programmes.

"INTRODUCTION Mining and processing of sulfide ore bodies has the potential to solubilize sulfate. Gypsum in the host rock, as well as oxidation of sulfides during milling and processing can solubilize sulfate. Acid rock drainage (ARD) also has the potential to generate waters high in sulfate. Even after treatment of the ARD with lime, the treated water can have sulfate present in gypsum saturation levels. Most mine-sites reuse sulfate impacted water but as a mine nears closure, reuse options may be limited and water treatment becomes an option. Furthermore, sulfate discharge requirements, particularly for anti-degredation narrative standards, can be very strict. Freeport has investigated many new technologies to economically remove sulfate from these types of water. A Dutch company, Paques B.V. developed one of these technologies and it utilized biological reactors to convert sulfate into elemental sulfur in a 2-step process. In 1992 the first industrial reference of the SULFATEQTM technology was commissioned at the Nystar Budel zinc refinery in the Netherlands. PILOT PLANT TECHNOLOGY AND DESCRIPTION As shown in Figure 1, the plant contains several process steps, which can mainly be divided into the following sections: 1. Anaerobic biological system in which sulfate is reduced to hydrogen sulfide by sulfate reducing bacteria. 2. Aerobic biological system in which hydrogen sulfide is oxidized to elemental sulfur by sulfide oxidizing bacteria. 3. Solid/liquid separation in which sulfur, calcium carbonate and biomass solids are separated and dewatered. Sulfate impacted ground water is pumped to the feed water tank through a plate and frame heat exchanger to maintain the solution temperature around 95°F. A custom mix of micronutrients is dosed to the feed tank. This nutrient mixture provides essential elements for the growth of anaerobic and aerobic biomass. Urea is added to the feed tank and provides the required nitrogen source to the biomasses. The pretreated feed water is pumped into the anaerobic reactor. The reactor works on the gas lift principle. Sulfate reducing bacteria utilize hydrogen gas as electron donors and reduce sulfate to hydrogen sulfide. This reaction increases the alkalinity of the solution. Carbon dioxide gas is added in order to control the pH within working range of the reactor. Due to the low solubility of the hydrogen gas, the anaerobic gas mixture is recycled through the system. The gas mixture recycle also provides the gas lift for mixing within the anaerobic reactor."

The Mount Isa Rocky Paste Fill (RPF) was one of the five fill options investigated for the Enterprise Mine filling between June 1996 and September 1996. Co-disposal of deslimed cemented tailings (CHF) and suitably graded rockfill (RF) in certain ratios produced the rocky paste fill. The RPF behaved like a cohesive paste with very high proportion of rockfill in the mix. Several large-scale mixing trials and drop tests proved that the rocky pastefill results in a homogeneous fill mass after placement. Segregation of RF was a common problem with MIM's traditional cemented rock fill (CRF), which is a combination of CHF and RF. The segregation was eliminated and a non-segregating paste like fill was created by optimising the particle size distribution of RF, and combining the RF and the CHF in optimum ratios. In rocky pastefill, the excess water in the cemented deslimed tailings slurry is taken up by the rockfill as the surface moisture on the rockfill particles and also as pore water between the particles. This results in thickening of the CHF, and the resultant mix is a non-segregating cohesive paste, which can easily spread to any horizontal distance inside a stope at a very low surface angle. The rocky pastefill releases no free water and relatively more pervious than the standard CHF due to rockfill component. With an average cement addition of 1.5 to 2% the rocky pastefill can develop higher strengths over 1Mpa. The rocky paste fill is applicable in many situations and can accommodate a variety of coarser materials that would be available in different mine sites. This paper present the research work and the experience associated with the rocky paste fill, and gives clear design principles for any potential users.

After a century of variable government-supplied housing on their cold, windswept lands, and facing extremely limited natural resources and no timber, the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe has launched a study into alternative housing approaches for their people. Considering that they have little more than the soil and limited river aggregates under their feet, the Tribe has elected to consider adobe and earthen-wall construction. Earthen construction is no stranger to the Sioux lands. Smaller tribes, including the Mandan, Arikira, and Hidatsa, lived here among the Sioux in earthlodges for centuries. Such earthlodge structures were not unlike the Southwestern jacal style-a framework of upright branches and branches covered with mud-employed by the Anasazi about A.D. 700-900. Indeed, the Sioux people themselves evolved from earlier earthlodge dwellers. Indigenous peoples in New Mexico, Arizona, and neighboring Mexico have used earthen-wall housing for many centuries, reinforcing Sioux observations that this is today an earth-friendly, cost-effective, and practical approach. The Cheyenne River and Pine Ridge Sioux Reservations also recently have conducted studies on earthen- wall construction. This paper describes the search for and evaluation of potential raw-material resources for earthen-wall/adobe construction on the Standing Rock Reservation in North and South Dakota. Significant resources of clay/silt materials (8 million tons in the Striped Cloud clay bed) suitable as adobe binders and sand-and-gravel aggregate (2.5 million tons) that could support earthen/adobe construction have been identified throughout the Fort Yates Flat area on the Reservation. Also addressed is how adobe and rammed-earth construction could add to the diversity of reservation construction and address future Tribal housing and other building needs.

The idea of automatic or remote control of the mine ventilation process generally, and methane concentration particularly, attracts the attention of mining engineers more and more. The advantages of introducing mine ventilation control systems are breaking traditional reluctance. The change of attitude is not only because of the requirements of modern exploitation technology, but it is also due to the recent progress in development and successful introduction of reliable monitoring systems and actuators in the form of controlled ventilators and doors [1]; [2], [3], [4], [5], [6]. Many 'years of theoretical and experimental studies of the dynamics of mine ventilation processes created the needed base for a proper design of an automatic control system [7],[8],[9], [10]. From these studies must, however, be drawn a fundamental conclusion, which may be regarded as the motto of this paper: An automatic control system for mine ventilation ill-conditioned or improperly designed is capable of creating hazard situations in response to random disturbances, much more, severe in consequence than a traditional ventilation system without any automatic or remote control! This statement is easy to prove if the dynamic properties of the ventilation process are taken into consideration. The ventilation process, as a matter of fact, is described by non-linear equations, and it must be expected that the process has more than one state of equilibrium. In other words, in the ventilation process may exist not only one but also more than one steady-states of flow, of which some are stable and others unstable. In certain circumstances, there may be no steady-state at all, and the process will oscillate [8], [11] , [12] . The state of flow in a network tends towards a steady-state and the actual steady-state established will depend on the initial conditions or disturbances in flow (fire,. etc.), which steady-state from the total number that will be . We frequently observe jumps from one steady-state to another. Disturbances in flow conditions which may cause such transitions are events of random character, occurring very rarely. Concluding, it must be stressed that there has to be a control system adjusted to the ventilation process in order to avoid situations mentioned above. There is only one alternative available and suitable for examination or study of the dynamics of a given mine ventilation problem: either by continuous monitoring of the real process, or numerical simulation of the process using a mathematical model. The advantages of the second method are obvious. This method allows consideration of every possible case very quickly and cheaply in relation to the first method. The aim of the paper is to show again that the simulation of the mine ventilation process and particularly a methane concentration process, separately or combined together with a control system, are real possibilities. A simulation method requires precise specification of the problem under consideration. For example, if we intend to examine a methane-concentration control system, the following items have to be specified: - expected target function of the control system. - structure of the control system. - mathematical model of control system, including sensor system, data preparation system, controllers, decision routine, regulators, etc. - structure of mine ventilation network. - mathematical model of ventilation process, including air flow and methane concentration processes. - pattern of disturbances which may occur in the controlled process as well as initial conditions on a 'start-up' of the system. Using typical computer programs for numerical solution of equations in the mathematical model of the problem involved, we are able, within the adequacy of the model, to simulate every case specified by the disturbances and initial conditions. As a result of simulation, it is expected that the following parameters could be defined: - transient flow in the network. - transient state of methane concentration in working areas. - stability of flow and methane concent¬ration. - stability of the control system. - range of control. - efficiency of control, etc. It is obvious that simulation methods readily allow for modifications to existing systems such that desired results will be obtained. Is the Brazilian gold rush over? Judging from the situation in Brazil over the past few decades, the answer is almost certainly yes. The picture of swarms of Brazilian prospectors or "Garimpeiros" crowding or, more correctly, overcrowding the gold regions of the Amazon jungle using the time-aged empirical approach to gold exploration has finally run its course. There are two fallacies that have lead to a reduction in the discovery of new gold fields in Brazil. The first fallacy is that "Brazil's geology is largely unknown." The extreme depth of weathering and the general lack of understanding of the shield deposits are at the origin of this misconception. The second fallacy is that "Brazilian prospectors ("garimpeiros") are very naive, have very little technical knowledge and can only produce gold at very low recovery rates." This is more of a result of wishful thinking for the purpose of justifying limiting exploration programs than it is a real consideration. In this paper, the author takes a methodical heuristic approach to gold exploration in Brazil and offers this as an alternative to the empirical approach of the garimpeiros.

Cyanidation tailings which are disposed in a surface impoundment experience a loss of cyanide due to natural degradation, frequently reducing the cyanide concentration to very low levels. Quantifying cyanide losses in terms of pond geometry, local weather conditions and feed solution chemistry has been largely empirical though in many cases mining operations rely on surface impoundments to reduce cyanide to below an internally regulated concentration or an effluent limitation. To permit a more quantitative evaluation of cyanide losses in an impoundment, a computer simulation was developed to estimate the losses of free, WAD and total cyanide due to dissociation, photolysis and volatilization. Results of the model are compared against data collected for a North American tailings impoundment during 1998.

In the southwest porphyry copper province, the virgin prospect with good copper mineralization cropping out has disappeared. Future discoveries will require an increasingly sophisticated arsenal of exploration techniques and concepts. One of the latter, stratigraphic analysis, is a technique which is often overlooked. A surprising number of exploration geologists still think of porphyry copper deposits as occurring wholly within intrusive bodies such as quartz monzonite or granodiorite. Disseminated copper mineralization, though genetically related to intrusive rocks, can occur within both the intrusive and the intruded rocks. At present, as much as 30% of the total copper produced from disseminated copper deposits in the Southwest originate from the intruded rocks rather than the intrusive. George M. Schwartz, in "Geology of the Porphyry Copper Deposits of Southwestern North America" points out that the host rocks at porphyry copper deposits include such diverse rock types as diabase, granite, limestone, dolomite, quartzite, skern, sericite schista, and others in addition to the more common monzonite, quartz-monzonite, and diorite porphyrys. Therefore, a porphyry copper can be defined as a disseminated copper deposit occurring either in or adjacent to a granitic-monzonitic-dioritic intrusive which can be exploited using bulk. mining techniques. High tonnage hoisting of materials by vertical conveyors through deep shafts is a relatively new concept in mining that is proving to be effective. The development of the Pocketlift® belt by Metso Flexowell, located in Moers, Germany, enabled the installation of a deep shaft vertical conveyor in 2002. This application followed years of design and operational experience gained in medium-depth shafts around the world. The different types of processes used in fine coal beneficiation in the Republic of South Africa are listed, together with data giving an indication of their separating efficiencies The two classes of coal, fines and ultra-fines, present in the -0,s m fraction of the run of mine coal are discussed, with special reference to their beneficiation characteristics. Using those properties, together with the data on plant efficiency, case studies are worked out to indicate the advantages and disadvantages of the different processing routes available. The paper closes with an indication of areas where research is required to enable some of the processes to be applied to a greater extent than is presently the case.

In 1985 the Pittsburgh Energy Technology Center (PETC) of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) conducted a study to evaluate the emerging selective agglomeration processes (Killmeyer, 1985). This paper covers a recent similar study evaluating an associated technology, the emerging advanced froth flotation processes. This study has goals similar to those of the 1985 study: to evaluate the emerging froth flotation technologies collectively and determine how far they have progressed in their ability to clean ultrafine coal, and to assess the differences among the participants. The major concern again in this study was not the level of development, nor the economics of each individual process but only the current technical performance.
