Numerous lead-zinc-barite-fluorite ore deposits, with simple mineralogy and roughly concordant with bedding, are found widely distributed all over the world, having been denominated and well described as "stratiform deposits" or "strata-bound ore bodies", not having any genetic relationship. During several years, its origin has been discussed, without getting to general agreement regarding the main mining districts of this type. Through studies made of large stratiform deposits in the United States, Europe and Russia, it has been found that there are, within this classification, syngenctic diagenetic and epigenetic ore bodies. During the Symposium about the genesis of the stratiform lead-zinc-fluorite-barite deposits, carried out in New York in 1966, Frank G. Snyder (1), presented an excellent analysis of the theories of the origin of these deposits and of the evaluation of the criteria regarding classification. As per his definitions (Table 1), "a deposit is syngenetic if formed by processes similar to and simultaneously with the enclosing rock, epigenetic if introduced into a pre-existing rock and a diagenetic origin implies deposition of metals with the host sediments but with recrystallization, rearrengement and limited migration".

"Proper soil conditioning is critical for effective earth pressure balance (EPB) TBM tunneling. Chamber pressures can reach 3-5 bar yet the vast majority of testing is performed under atmospheric conditions. This paper illustrates how pressure influences foam stability and conditioned soil behavior, and how atmospheric test results must be viewed in the context of expected chamber pressures. Torsional shear strength, compressibility and abrasivity of foam conditioned sand were found to be ideal when the void ratio was above the ASTM-determined maximum void ratio, achieved by sufficiently expanding the soil grain structure with foam, herein when the foam injection ratio at pressure exceeded 45%. Otherwise, the engineering properties of foam conditioned sand were not ideal, i.e., appreciable torque and abrasivity, low compressibility. INTRODUCTION Proper soil conditioning is critical for effective earth pressure balance (EPB) TBM tunneling. The formation soil at the cutterhead must be transformed into a highly compressible, low shear strength and low permeability medium within the excavation chamber to allow effective EPB performance. This behavior must be maintained for a certain residency time while the soil is in the chamber and screw conveyor. The vast majority of published studies on conditioned soil behavior have been performed under atmospheric conditions (Quebaud et al., 1998; Bezuijen et al., 1999; Psomas and Houlsby, 2002; Vinai et al. 2008; Thewes et al., 2012; Peila, 2014); however, the desired soil behavior must occur under chamber pressures that can reach 5-7 bar. The influence of pressure on conditioned soil is significant and is dramatically different than behavior under atmospheric pressure (Williamson et al., 1999; Mori et al., 2015). This paper illustrates how pressure influences conditioned soil behavior and how atmospheric test results must be viewed in the context of expected chamber pressures. The influence of pressure on foam bubble size (including with time) is shown through digital image analysis. The influence of pressure on foam half-life is also investigated. The compressibility, shear strength, and abrasivity of conditioned soil under pressure is presented and explained in terms of density, soil and air compressibility and porosity."

Under the Wilderness Act of 1964 and the accompanying House Conference Report, the Geological Survey and Bureau of Mines are charged with the responsibility of making recurring mineral studies of wilderness and wilderness candidate areas in national forests within and proposed for the National Wilderness Preservation System. The Wilderness Act, a major shift from the multiple-use concept of national forests, identified for the first time the value of mineral resource information in decisions for single-use designation of public lands. This concept was further realized when the Secretary of the Interior in May 1974 recommended that mineral studies be made prior to wilderness recommendations for five large Interior-managed game ranges and the Glacier Bay National Monument aggregating 7.8 million acres. Presently, our studies have been completed on 126 wilderness and proposed wilderness areas totaling 15.4 million acres in the national forests. In 1973, 1 year in advance of the act's 10-year review deadline, we completed the 34 primitive areas, originally the only potential additions considered by the 1964 Act.

Silicon carbide (SiC) can be produced by heating rice hulls to elevated temperature, The product is a mixture of beta crystalline silicon carbide whiskers, particles and unreacted carbon. The silicon carbide whiskers are 0.5 micron in diameter and 50 to 100 micron in length and have been found useful for reinforcing metal and other composite materials. The carbon can be removed by combustion, but this makes separation of the silicon carbide whiskers from particles difficult and a high grade whisker product cannot be made. However, a clean high grade Sic whiskers product can be obtained from the pre-burned converted rice hulls using physical separation processes that are based on differential wetting. Recovery of Sic whiskers from the pre-burned material was found to exceed 90 percent. A modification of the froth flotation process developed during this study is now being used commercially to separate silicon carbide whiskers and particles and to recover a high grade whisker product.

1. Theory of Wet Dust Suppression Techniques Wet dust suppression is the utilization of a liquid for the control, reduction or elimination of airborne dust, or the suppression of such dust at its source. Effective control involves: a. The confinement of the dust within the dust producing area by a curtain of moisture. b. The wetting of the dust by direct contact between the particles and droplets of moisture. c. The formation of agglomerates too heavy to remain airborne, by combining small dust particles with each other and with the droplets of liquid. From the standpoint of economy, availability and safety, water is the ideal fluid. From the standpoint of effectiveness, however, it leaves much to be desired. As a result, a tech¬nique has been devised in which very small percentages of specially formulated dust control compounds are blended with water to greatly enhance its dust suppression qualities. The terms "dust control compounds, wetting agents and surface active agents" are frequently used interchangeably. Although dust control compounds represent a specific type of wetting agent, a great many wetting agents are far from satisfactory for dust control. "Wetting Agents" is a broad category which covers such items as emulsifiers, solubilizers, detergents, foamers, penetrants, thickeners, etc. Dust control compounds, on the other hand, are carefully formulated blends in which one or more special surface active agents have been incorporated.

After 30 years of success, Newmont Gold Company has temporarily ceased production from the original Carlin Pit. In late 1993, the Carlin East Decline was driven and an extensive underground exploration program was started. Today, Newmont Gold produces refractory ore from the Carlin East underground at the rate of 700 t/d (770 stpd) for an annual production of over 100,000 ounces. Over 70 underground miners enjoy the estimated 6-year mine life at Carlin East. About 70% of the ore at Carlin East is mined by mechanized longhole stoping with delayed cemented backfill. The remaining ore is mined by underhand drift and cemented fill methods.

The main potash deposit at Taquari-Vassouras is contained in cycle VII, and consists of several sylvinite bodies. Cycle VII belongs to a sequence of nine cycles defined by Szatmari (1974) in the Sergipe-Alagoas basin. The sylvinite layers are separated by halite beds. They are seated on or may be laterally in discordant contact with other lithologies such as the tachyhydrites at the base, and the limestone breccia at the top. The main structural features in the deposit include numerous synclines and anticlines, salt dissolution phenomena, and open fractures associated with the axes of the anticlines.

Dow Water & Process Solutions (DW&PS) was approached by ASARCO Inc. to attempt to recover cobalt and copper from their copper solvent extraction (SX) raffinate. Cobalt is added to many copper electrowinning tankhouses to help to prevent lead electrode corrosion. With cobalt?s high price this can be a large expense. ASARCO has ore that contains a small amount of naturally occurring cobalt. Currently they have no way of capturing this high value metal from their leach or raffinate streams. DW&PS has some chelating resin technologies that should be able to help solve this problem.

Pocahontas Land Corporation, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Norfolk and western Railway Company, owns a 100,000-acre block of coal lands in Martin, Johnson, Pike, Floyd and Lawrence Counties, Kentucky. These holdings were largely acquired in three major purchases between the years 1942 and 1959. The area is undeveloped and constitutes a part of the coal reserve for future mining. This block, which is principally in Martin County, lies in a triangle formed by the Levisa and Tug Forks of Big Sandy River on the sides with Dewey Dam at its base and the Town of Louisa at the apex. The topography'is typical of eastern Kentucky and consists of steep hills rising from 500 to 800 feet above creek level. There is little level ground in the area. As a matter of fact, some roads are on the creek bottoms with what little bottom land is available in the hollows being utilized for small-scale farming. The steep hills are marked by three separate massive sandstone formations which form cliffs ranging from 40 to 100 feet in height.

Gold plant performance during the start-up period, which extends until capacity production is sustained, has a major impact on the internal rate of return and the net present value of gold projects regardless of mining and processing configurations. The start-up period experiences substandard production, extra expenses, and sometimes reduced recovery. This results in lost profits, a portion of which are recouped at the end of the life of the mine. Poor start-up performance can put projects into financial jeopardy. The gold mining industry regularly experiences start-ups ranging from good to poor. Problem areas, which affect start-up performance, include shortcomings in ore reserve sampling and testing, equipment design and installation, untrained plant operators, inability to cope with problems which arise, and organization of the maintenance program. An investment, equal to 0.5% to 1.0% of plant capital cost, in programs to prepare for start-up, in advance, is recommended. Investment in such a program will make a good start-up possible. Without it the best result which can normally be expected is a fair start-up. Developers of new gold mines are urged to compare the cost of this investment with the anticipated increase in project net present value. Funds for this investment should be included in feasibility studies.

"This paper presents experiences gained from the construction of the Lake Mead Intake No. 3 project. The 4.7 km long tunnel was excavated with a hybrid TBM (able to operate in both closed and open mode). The tunnel crossed metamorphic and sedimentary rocks under a hydrostatic pressure of about 14 bar. During the excavation of the tunnel the TBM encountered difficult ground conditions caused by a combination of high water pressure, poor ground quality and locally low depth of cover. The adverse conditions required the TBM to be driven in closed mode at very high support pressures (10 – 15 bar) for approximately 60% of the tunnel length. The paper summarizes the main problems encountered during TBM excavation and analyzes the evolution of the TBM parameters over the entire tunnel length. INTRODUCTION The Lake Mead Intake No. 3 project is located approximately 30 km away from the city of Las Vegas in Nevada, USA. The project consists of the construction of a deeper third intake for the biggest reservoir in the United States, which is formed by the Hoover Dam. The construction of the new intake was required due to the constant drawdown of the lake level (more than 40 m in the past 20 years) and the consequent risk that the shallower intakes 1 & 2 may run dry. The project included the fabrication and positioning on the lake bottom of an intake riser, the excavation and lining of a 185 m deep shaft and construction of a 4.7 km long tunnel. One peculiarity of the project is that the water table is located about 140 m above the tunnel elevation (i.e. corresponding to a hydrostatic pressure of 14 bar at the current lake level). The tunnel was constructed using a tunnel boring machine (TBM) able to operate in both open and closed mode (Mc Donald & Burger, 2009). The present paper focuses on the TBM tunneling experience gained from the Lake Mead Intake No. 3 tunnel. The TBM excavation started on December 27, 2011 and finished on December 10, 2014 with the breakthrough to the intake structure at the bottom of Lake Mead. GEOLOGICAL CONDITIONS The assessment of the ground conditions encountered during construction was mainly based upon qualitative descriptions of the tunnel face conditions (during open mode operations) and analysis of the extracted muck (during closed mode operations)."

The penetration of sustainability principles in business practices has introduced the necessity for a simultaneous integrated assessment of the corporate economic, environmental and social performances. Continuous technological, political and legal evolutions indicate that Sustainable Development (SD) principles will soon have to be implemented in all sectors of the Greek corporate reality, among them in the Mineral and Mining Industry. However, the ultimate criteria for the evaluation of a company?s performance remain its profitability and its market value. Managers, shareholders, financial intermediaries, all alike, emphasize and base their decisions on the various accounting produced ratios of return (ROA, ROE, ROCE, Residual Value) included, or produced by data found, in the financial statements of the companies. This paper offers evidence that the traditional accounting ratios discourage the implementation of investment plans that aim at improving the environmental performance of companies and therefore can be inadequate and misguiding for SD applications. International studies have consistently traced a positive relationship between the environmental performances of firms and their financial positions. Yet, the fact that investors tend to reward proactive companies by increasing their corporate values is disregarded by the return ratios, which usually set up the basis for management rewards and bonuses. The book value of the firm assets and owners? equity from which such ratios are produced diverges strongly from the real corporate value, defined as the traded amount for the stock of a firm. There is an urgent need for an adjustment of the return ratios so that they can record the positive economic impact of a more sustainable attitude and encourage decision makers towards this direction.

At Getchell, Nevada a thousand tons per day mill for extracting gold from an ore containing orpiment and realgar was operated several years until early 1967. A cyanide process with a roaster was used in the processing of the ore. Mill wastes were contained in tailings ponds, in which the concentration of arsenic, currently, is one per cent or higher, Studies were conducted determining the effect of the tailing wastes on the Upper Sonoran vegetation of the area. Grid and line-intercept techniques were employed to obtain botanical informatics of the area surrounding the tailings ponds. Data of the per cent ground cover, species frequency, and plant vitality as a function of distance from the tailings ponds was collected. The data was compared to other botanical data collected from a control site outside the influence of the tailings ponds. In an attempt to isolate naturally occurring factors for varying plant communities from hose induced by factors derived from the close proximity of the tailings, soil cores were taken along the line-intercepts at intervals of 30 meters. The cores were analyzed for several compounds and elements needed for growth, or known to inhibit growth. Specific physical parameters of the soil samples were also taken. The paper describes the impact made by mill wastes containing large amounts of arsenic on the Upper Sonoran vegetation of the Getchell region. Described in detail are the techniques used to make the correlations between the plant communities and the influences of mill wastes.

This paper describes the results of a series of comparative studies in which polygonal, IDS, and kriging were compared for their local estimation accuracy. The specific objective of this study was to determine the impact that the particular nature of the mineralization has on the results of such comparative studies. The study was performed on simulated coal deposits and the evaluation parameter chosen was the coal thickness. For this study, many conditionally simulated deposits having different degrees of seam thickness continuity were first developed. Each simulated deposit covered an area of 30,000 ft x 30,000 ft which was, in turn, subdivided into 100 mine planning blocks of 3,000 ft x 3,000 ft in size. Thickness estimation was made for these mine planning blocks using surrounding DDH assays. In all cases tested, e.g., from a perfect continuity to a complete lack of continuity in coal seam thickness, kriging gave the best estimates among the three, followed by IDS and polygonal methods. As expected, the relative efficiency (i.e., superiority) of kriging over other estimators was highly dependent on the nature of mineralization.

The packed column flotation cell is an awesome separation device. Virtually unknown and untested, the packed column flotation cell is one of the ten most important developments in mineral processing of the 21st century. Though experimental and industrial data is limited, it is clear that the packed column flotation cell is two to three orders of magnitude better than the conventional flotation cell and one to one and a half orders of magnitude better than the open column flotation cell. With the modern packing taking up less than one percent of the packed column, column blocking does not occur. For a packed column operating 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, the estimated mean time between failures (MTBF) is one hundred thousand hours or roughly twelve years. With no moving parts, lower maintenance costs, lower power consumption and inherent operating stability, the packed column is a powerful separating machine. Because there is little meaningful data for comparing the packed column to the conventional flotation cell and the open column flotation cell, much of the material presented in this paper are guesstimates. They are disinterested guesstimate made by the authors after extensive theoretical work and reviewing the known facts. In the authors' opinion, no available data contradicts the guesstimate. The authors expect that there may be errors as large as three hundred percent. Even three hundred percent errors will not change the conclusions of this paper. The packed column flotation cell is a formidable separating device. To understand the problems of comparing the three types of flotation cells, consider the fact that the three cells may have different modes of separation. One of the authors, Meloy, believes that in the conventional cell, the primary particle separation takes place in the liquor with secondary separation taking place in the froth, while for open column flotation, all the separation takes place in the froth. However, he believes that in the packed column a large part of the separation may take place on the walls of the packing. If this is true, not only is the method of modeling each type of cell different, but the method of particle selection in the cell is different. This means that one type of cell may be better at differentiating between two different types of particles. There is a growing body of literature on open and packed column flotation. The effects of postmining land use planning are addressed in this paper. These effects may include savings in reclamation costs and increased value of reclaimed land. However, this may result in greater planning costs and possible delays in production. Therefore, an economic analysis was undertaken in an effort to determine the importance of each potential result and to quantify the overall economic impact of postmining land use planning. A discounted cash flow analysis was performed using a surface mine cost model to analyze the sensitivity of selling price to changes in various postmining land use planning parameters. As a result of this analysis it was determined that the profitability of a project is most sensitive to delays in production, particularly, if the delay occurs after major investments have been made. Many methods have been proposed for evaluating postmining land use alternatives (Sweigard and Ramani, 1981). Both quantitative methods, such as benefit-cost analysis (Brock and Brooks, 1968), and nonquantitative methods have been proposed. The application of one specific analytical method is pursued in this paper.

Dartbrook Coal is currently developing a modern, high production (3.5 Mtpy) single longwall retreat coal mine in the Upper Hunter Valley of NSW, Australia. The location is a green field site, with no surface or underground mining operations ever having taken place in the initial target seams. The coal seams of the working section, floor and immediate roof average a total 20 m in thickness and contain a mixed carbon dioxide 1 methane seam gas ranging from 6.5 to 11.0 m3/t. The target seams have undergone detailed characterisation to assess hazards and quantify the controls required to minimise associated risks during mining. Risks identified during initial phases of exploration and 14 months of development include: • High gas emission during development. • Probable high longwall gas emission rate. • Medium to high propensity to spontaneous combustion • Possible carbon dioxide outbursts on geological structures • The main controls currently in place include, • Mine geometry and ventilation circuits • Exploratory drilling ahead of development • Intensive in seam pre drainage • Goaf drainage plants • Comprehensive monitoring systems • Underground environmental management plan. • Pre mining predictions of gas emission provided an indication of gas emission rates which have proven to be an under estimate. Current mine issues are; • Both surface fans are at full capacity (250 m3/s 1.4 kPa) • Both gas drainage pumps are at full capacity (2.3 m3/s) • Alternatives to extensive in seam pre drainage being investigated (surface to in seam hydro fracture) Review of mine design underway This paper describes the seam characterisation, assessment of mining hazards and summary of the management plan developed to address the risks identified. INTRODUCTION The Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD), is a special purpose sub-regional agency that provides collection and treatment services for sanitary wastewater for an area of 420 square miles (1088 km2) in 27 municipalities in the Milwaukee, Wisconsin metropolitan area. During its almost 75 years of existence, it has constructed 464 km of intercepting sewers, the majority in tunnel, and two sub-regional secondary wastewater treatment plants. The present program, the $1.7 billion Milwaukee Water Pollution Abatement Program, was started in 1977 and developed from ongoing internal planning, the Federal Clean Water Act and court judgments. Elements of the Program include improvement and expansion of the two treatment plants; rehabilitation of older in-place sewers; building new interceptors and relief sewers and providing capacity for high volume storage in approximately 32 km of deep, large diameter rock tunnels; reducing combined sewer overflow; and disposal/utilization of the solids that remain after the treatment process. The construction phase of the Program accounts for $1,105,900,000 within 335 separate construction contracts, 211 let to date, and covers a span of 15 years, starting in 1979 and running through 1994. Conveyance System construction cost is estimated to be $650,000,000 or about 60 percent of the total. Through December 1986, in terms of dollars, the total construction program is about 38 percent complete with Conveyance at 34 percent complete.

Geology is frequently complicated, hence only more regular deposits are mined. Coal is generally thick, often steeply pitching and usually soft or well-cleated. Due to competition from open-pit mines, only two underground mines are operating, McIntyre and B.C. Coal. Several other mines are being planned, the method being evenly divided between hydraulic, longwall, and room and pillar. McIntyre mines in the flat part of their formation (up to 20 degrees) uses continuous miners and shuttle cars in the 3m and 6m seams. This company is considering a retreating longwall face. B.C. Coal operates a hydraulic mine in a 16m thick seam dipping at 10 to 55 degrees with a productivity of about 20 tonnes per manshift.

Uranium tailings at Cotter Corporation's Canon City, Colorado Mill were moved to a double-lined impoundment, but uranium and molybdenum salts remaining in the fractured bedrock underlying the old tailings ponds seeped into groundwater. Fluor Daniel GTI recommended an in situ geochemical fixation remedy, flushing Best Sulfur Products' calcium polysulfide reductant into the subsurface with clean water. Residual metals became immobile, trapped in the bedrock. Fluor Daniel GTI designed and implemented the process on ten acres with high metal concentrations. Cotter is operating and monitoring the system, which can be expanded to "hot spots." The original remediation time was estimated at less than five years.
