Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B Eng (Metallurgical Engineering) degree Steel was sampled after calcium treatment, to follow changes in inclusion composition during the processing of alumium-killed steel into continuously-cast billets, at Mittal Vereeniging. There is some shift in the distribution of inclusion compositions towards alumina, as the liquid steel moves from the ladle to the tundish. This shift may reflect some reoxidation. However, the effect on inclusion modification is small, since only a small fraction of the tundish oxide inclusions is fully solid?which agrees with the plant observation that these heats cast without clogging. Magnesium oxide in the inclusions contributes to liquid formation, substantially increasing the range of lime: alumina ratios over which the inclusions are partially or fully liquid.

TICOR South Africa is a new titanium feed stock producer. In the Ticor South Africa plant the ilmenite feed to the smelter plant is roasted to enhance its magnetic properties. This allows for the magnetic separation of chromite from the ilmenite. The magnetization reaction relies on partial oxidation with both under- and over-oxidation causing insufficient magnetization. To subject the roaster plant feed material to the required physical conditions a circulating fluid bed (CFB) roaster is used. This paper describes the development of a laboratory model that will aid in the control of the CFB roaster.

The South African Minerals Development Act (?the Act?) has been promulgated and will come into full force and effect once it is gazetted. Thereafter, all Old Order mineral rights will have to be converted into New Order mineral rights within a 5-year period, probably by the end of 2008. The conversion of rights will be achieved only with the demonstrated inclusion of empowerment groups in the conversion applications. In addition to the Act, the first draft of the proposed Royalty Bill (?the Bill?) was released during the week beginning 17 March 2003. Comments on the Bill?s contents had to be submitted before 30 April 2003. The contents were to be considered in terms of applicability and acceptability to the South African minerals industry, where after proposed comments and suggested amendments were to be submitted to the relevant State Treasury office. Specifically referring to the Bill, the general response from the industry is one of concern. Since any royalty is tantamount to a tax, the general feeling is that the current mining taxation rates are already internationally competitive and to increase these effective rates, notably at differing rates depending on commodity type, will have an adverse impact on the South African mining industry. A number of these impacts can be mitigated to some degree, depending on the flexibility of the State to address the major concerns.

Historically, linear and lognormal krigings were first created to estimate the in situ mineral resources of blocks. Nonlinear geostatistics and indicator kriging were subsequently developed to evaluate also the portion recovered when applying a cut-off on selective mining units (SMUs) within blocks. In practice these methods are generally based either on the Gaussian model with a transformation generalizing the lognormal case or on the indicators above cut-offs. Very often the indicator approach is simplified by kriging separately each indicator, and when starting from a continuous variable, a practical advantage of the discretization into classes lies in the easy treatment of a zero effect and of the high values. However, a number of so-called isofactorial models have also been developed for a discrete or continuous variable, where the full cokriging of indicators (i.e. disjunctive kriging) simplifies to the separate kriging of factors. Moreover, these models are equipped with a change of support, allowing a consistent estimation of recoverable resources on SMUs. Min-Max Autocorrelation Factors (MAF) analysis of the indicators offers a new approach for indicator modelling. In particular the first factor, the one with the highest spatial continuity, can help in choosing the type of model. For example a monotonic experimental first factor can be used directly as the basis of a discrete diffusion model, unless a continuous diffusion model such as the Gaussian model can be used on the original variable. This approach is illustrated on a uranium deposit mined selectively: estimates of recoverable resources by discrete disjunctive kriging and uniform conditioning in a Gaussian model are compared locally to short-term estimates based on two areas densely drilled.

Between 2000 and 2006, platinum production from the South African mines expanded from 206 to 307 tonnes (DME, 2007). Most of this additional metal has come from traditional ?narrow? reef stoping, generally taken to mean stoping in working places with a mining height of less than 1,5 metres. It is well known that narrow-reef stoping presents safety, technological and ergonometric challenges (Pickering, 2007). In planning for the expansion, which is still continuing, the platinum mining industry realized that it could not simply continue with traditional methods of narrow-reef mining. Particular issues identified were: ? High labour-intensivity: caused by use of hand-held rock drilling machines, labour-intensive support installation and stope cleaning; ? Dependence on rock-drillers: this occupation is no longer an attractive one and there is a reducing flow of new recruits; ? Safety: most of the work is performed close to the new faces, where there is the greatest exposure to the hazards of falling rock.

An equilibrium study was carried out at 1873 K to ascertain the effect of carbon in CaO-SiO2-Al2O3-MgO-MnO-FetO slag systems on their FetO and MnO activity coefficients, representing the slag?s thermodynamic potential for steel reoxidation. Both ?FetOand ?MnO showed not only a sharp increment, but also a simultaneous slow decrement by increasing carbon content in slag, suggesting opposite roles of the carbon according to its stable forms. XPS (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy) was introduced to clarify the stable forms of carbon in slag. XPS results prove that carbon dissolves in slag as carbonate, and carbide ions under oxidizing and reducing atmospheres, respectively. It was concluded that carbonate ions increase ?FetOand ?MnO, and that carbide decreases them. This paper suggests an application method of the present results to actual ladle refining processes, in order to enhance steel cleanliness without decreasing (FetO + MnO) content in slag. Zincor uses a Roast-Leach-Electrowinning circuit to process zinc sulphide concentrates. It also processes zinc oxide fume, originating from a slag smelting operation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Zincor achieved an average zinc recovery of 90.3% during the period January 2006 to May 2007. The bulk of the losses occurred in the iron and lead silver residues, both as soluble and un-dissolved losses. The un-dissolved losses in the iron residue constituted around 33% of the total zinc lost from the circuit, and were largely attributed to the presence of zinc-ferrite in the calcine used for neutralization during iron removal. As part of Zincor?s continuous improvement programme, the un-dissolved zinc losses in the iron residue were targeted by: the partial replacement of calcine with zinc oxide fume (from the DRC); and the preferential use of ?low-ferrite content calcine? as neutralizing agents in the iron removal circuit. These initiatives, coupled with other operational factors, resulted in a marked improvement in recovery to 92.6% during June to December 2007. The zinc oxide fume, directly fed to the circuit, required investigation of the halide rejection capacity of the Zincor circuit. Rejection of chloride via the magnesium bleed operation was considered adequate. Fluoride was mainly rejected via the iron (~70%) and lead silver (~27%) residues. Fluoride rejection via the lead silver residue varied significantly, probably as a result of variations in the sparingly soluble CaF2 content in the feed. The mechanism for fluoride rejection in the iron residues is uncertain. The fluoride rejection capacity of the Zincor iron residue (comprising of mainly jarosites, schwertmannite and ferrihydrite) at 2 ? 4 mg/L F in solution, was estimated at 0.14 ? 0.19 kgF/tFe residue.

This Technical Note was presented as a poster at the Western Cape Mineral Processing Symposium held in August 2001 The cleaning of fine coal (-1000 µm) in today?s coal preparation plants is an economically important factor. Coals with high ash contents are, in general, commercially undesirable. Current well-known techniques for treating fine coal include froth flotation and spirals. The primary critical factor with regards to spirals is the efficiency of the process whereas that of flotation, is the cost of there agents used. Research into enhanced gravity separation techniques has resulted in several commercially available enhanced gravity separators. This project was based on a preliminary investigation into the feasibility of one such separator, to effectively treat fine (-500 µm) coal. Experimental variables included particle size and speed of rotation of the said instrument. The performance of the separator was compared to the results obtained from liquid density separations done for the two coal fractions evaluated. From the results obtained in this preliminary study it appears that the piece of equipment investigated does not measure up to expectations. Recommendations for further investigation include the evaluation of the instrument on other South African coals to obtain conclusive results.

One of the valuation approaches applied to Advanced Exploration Areas and Pre-Development Projects is the so-called ?in situ Mineralization Method? or the ?Yardstick Method?. This method is based on the concept of a known undeveloped Mineral Resource being worth a certain fraction (the ?Yardstick?) of the contained commodity value (?metal in ground?), using commodity prices ruling at the date of valuation. The Yardstick value is derived usually from an average market-based figure obtained from an analysis of recent transactions and is expressed as a monetary value per ounce or per tonne. It maybe modified to accommodate the quality (e.g. grade) and category (e.g. confidence level) of the Mineral Resource/Reserve involved and the time, effort and expenditure expected to be involved in bringing the project to fruition. Some eighteen recent and relevant transactions were analysed, allowing the following general conclusions to be reached: ? a Yardstick with which to value undeveloped PGE mineral resources is likely to range between 0.5% and 2.5% of the in-ground contained metal value ? the expected method of mining (especially with regard to mining costs) and the grade of the mineralization both have a strong influence on the Yardstick ? the status (classification) of the Mineral Resource has some influence on the Yardstick and ? the ruling price of platinum and the regional location of the deposit appear to have insignificant influences on the Yardstick.

After smelting, the associated mineral ore accompanying Valuable Metal Compounds (VMC),such as titania and borate in BF., most of the VMC were separated from the metal into the molten slag that is an associated slags. Based on several case studies in laboratories and in a practice in a pilot plant on the associated slags , there occur a feasibility to recovery VMC from the slags by anew process- Selective Precipitation Technique (SPT) on which three continuous steps are involved: (1) The selective enriching the dispersed VMC into a designed mineral phase in the molten slag; (2) The selective coarsening the designed mineral phase with large crystal grain size;(3) The selective separating the coarsen phase from tailing by mineral dressing or hydrometallurgical process . Some results on the recovering the VMC from the associated slags by SPT were summarized as examples in present paper. Over the last few years Lonmin Platinum and Sandvik have embarked on a unique partnership of collaboration through a systematic approach to developing equipment to mechanize and automate narrow reef platinum mining. After the initial design and manufacture of the equipment the key aspect is the integrating equipment, people and method into a mining system. Another key a spec of mechanization is the optimization of equipment utilization and this philosophy has ensured continual evolvement of mining methods. This paper describes the trials and development that have resulted in the mining method described as Lonmin mechanized breast.

Slag-metal equilibrium experiments were conducted at 1500ºC and1580ºC under 0.03 atm, 0.05 atm and 0.83 atm CO partial pressures using silica and Cr-oxide crucibles. The complex slags belonged toSiO2-CaO-Al2O3-MgO-FeOx-CrOxand the metal phase to the Cr-Fe-C-Si-(S) systems. The carbon saturation of the metal phase was avoided using oxide crucibles and thus the results are pertinent to ferrochromium refining slags and processes. From equilibrium data and thermodynamic calculations, the CrO /(CrO+Cr2O3) ratio in the slag was determined as 0.75, 0.80 and 0.86 under 0.83 atm and 0.05 atm of CO pressure at 1500ºC and 0.03 atm and CO pressure at1580ºC, respectively. The results clearly demonstrated that a higher chromium content of the metal results in higher Cr in the slag, and chromium in slag decreases with increasing SiO2. The results were also sensitive to the crucibles used as these oxide crucibles saturated the slag either with respect to SiO2or Cr-oxides. It was also demonstrated that the relative amount of CrO in the slag was higher when SiO2crucibles were used in accord with thermo-dynamic calculations. Iso-concentration curves for carbon and chromium of the metal phase in equilibrium with the slag were drawn on a pseudo ternary SiO2? (AI2O3+CaO+MgO) ?(Cr2O3+Fe2O3) diagram. The activity coefficients and activities of carbon and chromium of the metal phase were also calculated from the experimental data and available thermodynamics information and were plotted as iso-activity curves in the same pseudo ternary diagram. Collection, preparation, and analysis of blasthole chippings is expensive. Frequently, interpolation of grades at unsampled locations is considered using techniques like kriging. A pre-requisite for kriging is that an experimental variogram is established. In order to assess the quality of the experimental variogram, a measure is developed in this paper. The measure is derived from analysis of the time-honoured expression relating the variance, semivariance, and covariance. It reflects the weighted average deviation of the summed semivariance and covariance from the biased variance. The proposed measure allows assessment of the influence of key variables on the quality of the variogram. Using simulated data, it follows that the quality improves with an increasing number of samples, increasing density of the sampled locations, increasing regularity of the sampling pattern, and increasing uniformity of grades in the absence of correlation. Application to real data shows that the minimum number of samples could coincide with a marked decrease in the value of the measure. Establishing a threshold value is subject to further research. The efficient and accurate design of pipe and pumping plant for non-Newtonian mineral slurries remains a problem. The objective of this paper is to present the development of the Balanced Beam Tube Viscometer (BBTV), an instrument which could facilitate more accurate design for these slurries. The background of rotational and tube viscometry is reviewed and the fundamental principles and inherent advantages of the BBTV are given. The design, data acquisition and processing techniques are introduced and results showing the reliability of the new instrument are presented and discussed. It is concluded that the BBTV is a reliable and versatile instrument for both routine analyses and research work, and has the potential to provide data for the refinement of the design procedure for mineral slurry pipe and plant design.

Historically bauxite-based refractories have been used in applications where andalusite-based refractories could work. Bauxite-based refractories were chosen over andalusite-based refractories mainly because of the availability of low-cost Chinese bauxite and also because many furnaces were designed by international companies that cannot easily access high-quality products. Currently, the availability of low-cost bauxite is under threat as a result of high export duties and tariffs as well as restrictions on the amount of material that China allows to be exported. South Africa is a major producer of andalusite, and this guarantees stability with respect to both availability and price. Refractories based on andalusite have an added economic advantage over bauxite-based refractories in that unlike bauxite, which requires high-temperature calcination before use, andalusite is used in its raw state. This paper constitutes a literature study of the merits, both technical and economic, of using refractories based on andalusite compared to bauxite-based refractories. Small scale mining (SSM) has been going on for a long time in Ghana. SSM was legalized by the PNDC Law 218, 1989. Since then there have been numerous gains from the SSM industry. The SSM is organized locally by the concession owner who engages people to work for the gold which he buys. Small scale miners (SSMs) use crudely made sluices in Ghana and, therefore, their production falls below what is expected. The SSMs work in groups and not as cooperatives, as they do in Brazil and other Latin American countries. Legalization of SSM has curbed gold smuggling considerably because a gold marketing entity is available. SSM poses certain environmental problems like pollution of water bodies and soils by mercury and indiscriminate digging of pits.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of BSc Eng (Mining)degree The purpose of this report is to assess the risks faced by mines in dolomitic compartments in particular Kloof 8 shaft. The dolomites of the West Rand comprise one of South Africa?s most natural water resources, and overlie the reefs of the richest gold mines in the world. The pumping of water from the dolomitic aquifers to prevent flooding has caused the natural water table to subside, and the resulting cavities within the dolomite rock formations that overlie many gold deposits sometimes collapse, causing sinkholes. These impacts of the mining industry could worsen over time if preventative measures are not taken. This report discusses these impacts in detail, more specifically the risks to which operations in dolomitic compartments are exposed. A risk analysis was carried out to access the risks that the organization could face and it was this analysis that allowed one to examine the best methods to combat the problems. Other factors such as geological features and seismic events were also considered for the evaluation. To aid with the completion of this work various resources were utilized. A literature study was undertaken, information was gathered from various experts who specialize in dolomitic studies, evaluations were conducted and conclusions reached. The results from the project indicated that preventative measures should be implemented and correct procedures put in place to prevent any disasters.

Coal has been at the forefront of mankind?s drive to improve his quality of life and also for sustainable development, from the Industrial Revolution onwards. The international coal industry today is large, with some 3,7 billion tons being produced and consumed in 1997. South Africa is an important participant in the coal industry, selling some 220 million tons in 1997 of which 64 million tons were exported. It is the second-largest thermal coal exporting country in the world. Despite the size of the world coal industry, it is not immune to change. The address examines growth projections for the industry and the change drivers that will impact on it in the future. Environmental pressures, the most important of which being the climate change debate, the Kyoto Protocol arising from this debate and the development of clean coal technologies, to reduce the impact of coal production and usage on the environment are considered. Other major change drivers considered are competition from other sources of energy and that between coal producers, the deregulation of the electric power industry, corporate restructuring and for the South African producer, legislative reform. The declining (real term) coal price, the consequent squeeze on margins and the need for producers to actively contain costs is covered. Technology has, in the past, been the driver behind the growth and change of the South African coal industry and its future role in ensuring that coal is the fuel of choice for continued improvement in standards of living and economic development is addressed.

Abstract: A series of numerical tests of hydraulic fracturing in heterogeneous rocks were performed to investigate the influence of pore pressure magnitude and gradient on initiation and propagation of tensile fractures. The numerical tests were run with a Rock Failure Process Analysis code, F-RFPA2D, incorporated with a Flow-Stress-Damage coupling model (FSD). To investigate the influence of pore pressure magnitude on fracture behaviour, “pinch-off” breaking tests, originally employed by Bridgeman to investigate the effective stress law for tensile fracture in a uniform pore pressure field, were numerically modelled. In another numerical test, a double-notched sample, with fluid pressure in one notch while keeping the other one open to the atmosphere, is numerically extended to investigate how the fluid flow direction or the pore pressure gradient will influence the fracture behaviour. The simulation results show that fracture is strongly influenced by both pore pressure magnitude and pore pressure gradient. Diese Pruefungen wurden mittels der Analyse- Software F-RFPA2D und Flow-stress-Damage Coupling model ( FSD) durchgefuehrt. Um den Einfluess der Wasserdruckgroesse der Oeffnung auf den Bruch zu beurteilen, wurden auch Bruchpruefung und nummerische Analogexperimenten gemacht, und dadurch wurde die ganze Phase der Bruchentstanden und Verbreiten wiedergezeigt, und die Ergebnissen ergeben sich, dass die Wasserdruckgroesse der Oeffnung und der Porisitaet sehr viel auf den Bruchentstanden und Verbreiten der Tension von Gebirgen beeinfluessen. Black Mountain, a polymetallic base metal mine located in the Northern Cape territory of South Africa has been blessed with high grade economic ore for many years. Now that the Broken Hill orebody is nearing the end of its life, a lower grade orebody (Swartberg) is being exploited to supplement production from Broken Hill. In addition, ore from stopes in the upper levels of the Broken Hill orebody is considerably tarnished (oxidized). As a natural result, the remaining ore contains a higher percentage of magnetite, pyrrhotite and pyrite than in earlier years. Bismuth, cadmium and cobalt also occur in the ore in higher quantities. The life of the mine has been lengthened with the discovery of further deeper-lying ore reserves extending from the Broken Hill orebody suitably called the Deeps section. However, to bridge the gap between development of the new reserve and the exhaustion of the old reserve, these lower grade and tarnished (oxidized) ores have to be treated. The mine has had reasonable success in identifying unfavourable or problematic ore types and stockpiling them separately to blend in small quantities with more favourable ore. Bench and plant scale tests have aided identification of the various ore types and significant improvements in flotation metallurgical results have been seen. Copper, lead and zinc metal occur as sulphides in the ore. The mill consists of a differential and sequential flotation process that extracts copper concentrate, lead concentrate and zinc concentrate respectively with silver metal recovered in the copper and lead concentrates. This paper describes the ore blending strategy employed at the mine to maximize the econo-metallurgical efficiency of the operation.
