Hydro-power-the use of high-pressure water as an energy source-offers tremendous benefits for environmental control in deep, hot mines. The extent of these benefits depends on the mining method, the selection of equipment to be hydro-powered, and the efficiency with which the coolth is extracted from the water and into the working environment. The engineering of hydro-power systems continues to receive much attention. However, this paper considers the environmental implications of using hydro-powered equipment, particularly with regard to positional efficiency. The integration of hydro-power with developments such as backfill, mechanization, and higher face-advance rates is discussed. Layouts are proposed that attempt to minimize the quantity of water in circulation by extracting the maximum coolth from the water.

The results of small-scale resin-in-pulp pilot-plant investigations at Grootvlei Proprietary Mines Ltd, President Brand Gold Mining Co. Ltd, and Western Areas Gold Mine Co. Ltd are reported. At each mine, a pulp was fed simultaneously to a carbon-in-pulp plant, allowing a direct comparison of the metallurgical performance of the two processes. With the Grootvlei pulp, gold was extracted more efficiently by resin than by carbon owing to the Iow concentration of competing base-metal cyanide complexes in solution. With the Western Areas pulp, the reverse was true because of the high concentrations of copper and nickel in solution. Finally, with the President Brand pulp, resin-inpulp was significantly superior to carbon-in-pulp owing mainly to the inherently slow rate of gold extraction from calcine by activated carbon. Results are presented that show the efficiency of the elution of gold and other elements with a variety of reagents from the loaded resins arising from these three campaigns. At Western Areas, a detailed investigation enabled a preliminary cost evaluation to be made of three techniques for the elution of strong-base resins.

In this paper the authors present their views on the actual and potential role of commodity analysis in mining industry. Owing to the dominant influence of the economy on all commodity markets, it is essential that individual commodities are studied not only in depth but within the broader context of economic influences. A commodity unit, which monitors market developments in a wide range of commodities, is well placed to provide the broader perspective in the study of commodity markets. This paper describes some of the specific functions of such a unit. Some of the methods used for price forecasting are described, and the results of price forecasts by different forecasting methods are compared.

The price received for a commodity decreases as the quantity sold increases. all other factors remaining the same. This has been the position with gold since it was demonetized in August 1971. The result is that the marginal revenue per kilogram of gold decreases steadily with increased production. If operating losses are to be avoided, the marginal cost of production must not exceed the marginal revenue. This requirement, although not seriously violated by most invididual mines, is not met by the industry as a whole, resulting in large losses of income to the State and the shareholders. These losses are increasing, and a way of curbing or reversing this trend is described.

A simple argument shows that it is impossible for the flight of a rod in contact with a litter bar in a rotary mill to be initiated at that point on the upside of mill rotation when all the forces acting on the rod are in equilibrium. The argument was confirmed experimentally in a study showing that the lift of litter bars is a function of their height, that the rod velocity at the point of departure has a significant radial component, and that the subsequent flight of a rod is along a parabolic trajectory as predicted by elementary mechanics. A quantitative account of the observed effects, which is based on a dynamic theory of the sliding interaction between rods and litter bars, revealed interesting properties of the motions of rods down the surfaces of litter bars when the latter are in uniform circular motion during the rotation of a mill.

As part of its programme to develop methods for concentrating minerals underground, the Chamber of Mines of South Africa in conjunction with Lurgi evolved and tested a I MW centrifugal mill. The machine is capable, in the autogenous mode, of grinding more than 25 t/h of minus 75 plus 44 mm hard quartzite to a minus 3 mm product containing over 50 per cent minus 75 µm material, and as a ball mill of grinding more than 60 t/h of minus 19 mm quartzite to a minus 3 mm product containing over 35 per cent minus 75 µm material. Extrapolation of computer models of the process suggests that these limits can be comfortably exceeded. Long-term continuous testing is in hand, aimed at proving that this I m in diameter by I m long mill is in every respect the equivalent of a conventional 4 m by 6 m ball mill.

The control of dust from mine dumps by G. H. GRANGE Pr. Eng., B.Sc. (Min. Eng.) (Rand) (Fellow) This paper gives a resume of the early attempts to control dust from mine dumps, leading up to the research project undertaken by the Chamber of Mines ResearchLaboratories to explore the possibilities of establishing vegetation on dump surfaces. The ultimate success of this work and details of the principles involved are outlined. Also given are a brief history of the event that culminated in the introduction of the Atmospheric Pollution Prevention Act in 1965, details of the control of dust in terms of this Act, and a short summary of the dust-control work.

SYNOPSIS This paper traces the developments in flotation practice at Anglovaal's Prieska Copper Mine, with em¬phasis on the depression/deactivation of lead and zinc. A depressant system was devised to accept feed material that was once regarded as untreatable. Of particular interest is the long-term downward trend of concentrator working costs in real terms. This trend follows the classic Experience Curve, which relates production costs to cumulative experience. It is felt that the experience-curve concept has important implications for the mining industry in general.

PRESENT Minutes of the Annual General Meeting, held on Friday the 20th August, 1971, at 7.45 p.m. in the Boulevard Hotel, Witbank. Mr J. Meintjies in the Chair, 15 Fellows, 7 Members, 2 Associate Members and 10 Visitors. Mr Meintjies extended a welcome to all the members and their wives, and the many visitors and their wives. A special welcome to Mr Robinson the outgoing President of the Institute and Prof. Howat the President Elect and Mrs Howat. The minutes were read and adopted. The Chairman read his Report for the past year and also the Financial Statement. Mr E. Jackson proposed the acceptance of the Financial Statement and Mr Winship seconded it. Mr Meintjies thanked Mr Vic Robinson for all the help he had given throughout the past year. He also thanked the outgoing Committee for their support, and the Secretary for arranging the function. Mr Meintjies congratulated Mr Alex Bain on his election as Chairman and asked him to continue with the meeting. Growing use of deionised water in surface coating techniques by w. F. LORCH Production engineers in the metal plating, paint, plastics-coating and printed circuit industries are increasingly aware of the cost of sub-standard or blemished items which have been poorly processed. An area where quality control can quickly produce higher efficiencies is in the choice of suitably purified water for making up solutions, for rinse baths and 'drag-out' baths, for cleansing lines and electrophoresis tasks, for maintaining electrolyte density and hence consistency, and for facilitating the recovery of valuable minerals. The author of this article examines the general problems of using nonpurified water, and shows how purified water has become accepted by the principal surface coating industries to improve processes and effect economies.

The monitoring of rock slopes is a common procedure in the management of hazards associated with slope instability. Slope stability radar has become widely accepted as the state-of-the-art method for management of hazards associated with unstable slopes in open pit mines. This is confirmed by the rapid adoption of the technology since inception in mid 2003, with over 70 GroundProbe slope stability radars now in use at open pit operations throughout the World. The use of a monitoring system such as slope radar to identify slope hazards is only part of the solution to minimise the consequences associated with slope instability. The presence of the hazard must also be effectively communicated to the mine personnel, so that the correct response to the hazard can be enacted, and the risk mitigated to an acceptable level. In some surface mines, due to the geotechnical characteristics of the rock mass, hazards can develop rapidly; with slopes progressing from stability to ultimate collapse in just hours. In these situations, it is vital that efficient systems are developed to evacuate the area of the pit affected. Such a system has been developed by GroundProbe in South Africa, with the vital driving force for the project being provided by the Anglo Platinum Mogalakwena mine operation based at Mokopane. The mine based development of the system was perceived as an essential aspect in the development of the successful system. From an early stage, the mine provided essential input on both hardware and software developments to allow the system to be rapidly integrated into the mining operation. This paper describes the pit evacuation alarm system that was developed and discussed the benefits obtained from a mine based development program.

This research study includes studies carried out on the recovery of unburned carbon in the ashes of Tuncbilek Thermal Power Plant. Bottom ashes have been identified by X-ray diffraction and X-ray fluorescence. These samples are potentially of class F type and have significant amounts of unburned coal. According to the ash amount that units in the thermal power plant produce, and the analyses of the samples mixed, which used certain amounts in flotation tests, it was found that the bottom ash includes 91.47% ash in dry form and 8.53% combustible matter, and the lower calorific value is 491 kcal/kg. Optimum flotation conditions to get the unburned carbon were subsequently determined by examination of the optimum flotation grain size, pulp density, collector type and amount, depressant type and amount, frother type and amount, agitation speed, and froth-taking time. While the lower calorific value of the thermal power plant bottom ashes of the 3rd , 4th and 5th units and the mixed bottom ash sample was, respectively, 959, 469, 279 and 491 kcal/kg in dry form, it increased to 2490, 1312, 786 and 1348 kcal/kg in the product obtained as a result of flotation in optimum conditions. INFACON XI has no doubt earned the distinction as the first such Congress in India. This prestigious occasion could become a reality of a long cherished dream of the Indian Ferroalloy Producers, consumers and ex-porters. The International Committee of Ferro Alloys (ICFA), South Africa, the august body for organising INFACON, every three years, could be convinced by the Indian Ferro Alloy Producers? Association (IFAPA) to award INFACON (XI) to India. This Congresss, organized by IFAPA, has opened a window for the Ferroalloy Community of India, the up-coming Asian Tiger, to register their strength and weakness to the world forum with the principal objectives of evolving long and short-term optimum road-maps for development. It is to be reckoned that India is poised to be a steel giant by 2020 when it is envisaged that the steel production may reach a level of 120 million tons of which significant proportion has to be in the categories of alloy and special steels, requiring standard and high grade ferroalloys. Keeping the above objective in view, the theme of this Congress has been rightfully designed as ?Innovations in Ferro Alloy Industry.? This Congress has also earned a distinction of more than eighty papers, finally selected for inclusion in the Proceedings. More than 100 internationally and nationally reputed experts in the field of ferroalloys (technology and manufacturing practices as well as world scenario) have been approached for critical review of abstracts and selection for the proceedings. It needs to be mentioned without the cooperation received from ICFA the high standard of INFACON could not have been assured. The papers are suitably grouped under seventeen heads, starting from world situation to production and operation followed by present and future technologies and finally to modelling and simulation. It is a Herculean task to the Technical Committee to fit these papers in proper sequence. The Commit-tee members kept no stone unturned to ensure the cogency with the subject matters and at the same timekeeping the flexibility of interests of the participant, especially in the context of three parallel sessions. The Proceedings containing only refereed papers of high quality, will serve the entire gamut of ferroalloy industry and will also highlight the present status of concerned countries. The areas of attention to make the industries globally competitive and at the same time laying emphasis on the prevailing practices, will help the industry leaders to formulate an appropriate global approach. Following the break-through step, instilled by INFACON XI, the Proceedings will be available both in bound and in searchable electronic CD-ROM format. I, as the Chairman of the Technical Committee would like to express thanks and high appreciation to all the Committee members for their whole hearted efforts in all respects without which it would not have been possible to complete these proceedings in the scheduled time. Technical Committee desires to place on record their gratitude to Organising Committee for their synergic cooperation all through in successfully executing multifarious tasks, associated with such a grand international technical Congress.

This paper deals with an experimental programme carried out with a gold analyser in the period June to September 1979 at Loraine Gold Mines. The results were found to be reproducible, with no overall or conditional bias when the measurements were compared with those obtained from chip samples. The standard error of estimation of a 3 m reef exposure, which was the sampling interval, can be reduced by a factor of 2,5 if the complete stretch is scanned, rather than the taking of one chip sample in its centre. Complete statistical and computational procedures were developed for the fitting of the normal-Iognormal model to observed analyser data and for the determination of the most likely gold grade for a particular analyser measurement. (This corection procedure is necessary since a significant number of negative analyser measurements can be observed.) Panel averages of uncorrected scans showed a small conditional bias relative to those of corrected scans. However, uncorrected panel averages can be used for on-the-spot decisions regarding whole panels. For standard calculations of ore reserves, use should be made of corrected scans. Under reasonable assumptions, the use of the detector in the selective mining of low-grade narrow reefs such as the Basal Reef at Loraine Gold Mines, when compared with the conventional chip-sampling method, can result in a saving of as high as R40 million in present-money terms over the life of a project. The difference could be even larger in a highly variable reef like the B Reef at Loraine Gold Mines.

Consideration is given to the technical and economic feasibility of freeze desalination as a technique for the simultaneous provision of ice to cool deep mines and for the desalination of mine water. Freeze desalination has not been developed fully or commercially. For sea-water applications, it may not offer significant advantages over other methods of desalination but, for the unique mining application, a single dual purpose plant that produces desalinated ice could offer significant cost savings over combinations of separate desalinators and ice-makers. The current status 01 freeze desalination is reviewed, and the important aspects relating to mines are discussed. Some freezing processes that could be suitably modified are described. The possible use of conventional ice-making machines for desalinating mine water is also discussed.

An account is given of the tests being conducted by Iscor on the following processes for the beneficiation of coal fines: froth flotation, gravity separation, heavy-medium separation, and pneumatic and column flotation. The coals used in the tests came from the Durnacol, Tshikondeni, Grootegeluk, and Hlobane collieries. The problems involved in the dewatering of fine products are stressed. From a theoretical study of the efficiencies that should be possible for a hypothetical South African coal, it is concluded that future fines-beneficiation plants in South Africa may use standard heavy-medium cyclones for coal down to 1 mm in size, fines heavy-medium separation for the 1 mm to 450 µm fraction, and column or pneumatic flotation for the minus 450 µm fines.

This paper covers the commercial development of gravity separation of fine particles using a Lamella High Shear Rate REFLUX? Classifier (REFLUX? Classifier), focusing primarily on coal applications. The REFLUX? Classifier is a fluidized bed device that incorporates a system of closely spaced parallel inclined channels located above the fluidized bed. These channels make it possible to achieve a significant suppression of the effects of particle size, resulting in a highly effective separation on the basis of density. The improved gravity separation performance is shown to be remarkably high, with a significant reduction in the variation of separation density with particle size, and a significant reduction in the change in Ecart probable error (Ep) with size. The first full commercial-sized units of the REFLUX? Classifier were field-tested in late 2009 in coal applications. More recently, the technology has been applied in fine particle separation in minerals applications and there are a number of full-sized units operating in chrome applications in South Africa. Initially, pilot-scaled units (typically the RC?300) were trialled in iron ore, mineral sands, and manganese plants amongst other minerals, typically after other technologies failed to achieve the desired results. Currently a number of laboratories globally are carrying out more testing in minerals applications. More than 50 RC? units are now operating in coal and minerals applications. This paper introduces the REFLUX? Classifier technology, identifies commercial applications, and gives some commercial results.

This paper describes the development and implementation of amine-wide continuous stability monitoring system at the Declines Section, Anglo Platinum Union JV. The Declines Section at Union JV experienced a number of large panel collapses during 2005 and 2006. As well as posing a major safety risk, the panel collapses had a major effect on production since the Declines Section is a semi-mechanized operation. The collapses would often extend into the mechanized strike roadways, resulting in a loss of access to both current and future production faces. The collapses have been largely overcome owing to a change in support design and the implementation of a mine-wide stability monitoring programme. This paper describes the precursors to collapses, which were identified using continuous closure measurements and the remedial measures taken. It also outlines the design and introduction of a robust and reliable monitoring tool, which is now used on a mine-wide basis to provide early warning of large-scale collapses.

The quantitative evaluation of the performance of fill materials placed in gold mine stopes is achieved by (i) measurement of the in-situ load- displacement, or stress-strain, characteristics of the materials; (ii) an objective comparison between the observed fill performance and that predicted from suitable computer modelling techniques; and (iii) objectively comparing conditions in backfilled and conventional stopes. Considerable problems have been experienced with the development of sufficiently robust instrumentation which can be installed within filled pad- docks and give reliable information over a long period of time. However, at most mines where backfill performance is being monitored, it has been possible to correlate stress measurements within the filled paddocks with strain measurements adjacent to the paddocks. The resultant stress-strain curves agree relatively well with those determined in the laboratory. Measurements in the hangingwall strata of filled and unfilled stopes indicate that the placement of fill does reduce the amount of inelastic convergence due to bed separation. Moreover, in some stopes, the rate of convergence with respect to face advance does reduce to that of the theoretical elastic convergence. Quantification of changes in the conditions at the stope face due to placement of fill has proved difficult. Observations indicate that, provided the fill is placed close to the face (- 5 m), and adequate temporary face support is used, conditions in filled panels are superior. In addition, in filled panels the damage caused by a rockburst in the stope and, particularly, in gullies is generally much less than would be expected in an unfilled stope. To quantify these improvements, parameters such as stope height, face advance and the frequency of falls of ground are being monitored.
