This paper presents a method that enables one to estimate the risk-adjusted discount rate. that should be used In project discounted cash-flow analysis. The risk-adjustment process is carried out via the capital asset pricing model of modern finance theory, in which the appropriate measure of risk is the beta coefficient of the project concerned. The resulting discount rate thus depends on the properties of the project Itself, and not on the nature or cost of the capital of the firm considering the investment.

Surely, it is not coincidence that the economic and political changes have occured simultaneously? South Africa, by virtue of its infrastructure and technology, is strategically placed to develop the potential of Africa's mineral wealth. In this address, I give my personal views on the ability of the mining industry to participate in the wider mineral resources of the African continent.

These effects were investigated in batch flotation studies, and by the measurement of rest and pulp potentials. At Iow additions of sulphurous acid as the pH regulator, flotation rate increased with increasing concentrations of dissolved oxygen. The recovery of chalcopyrite dropped significantly below a pH value of about 6,5 at 25 p.p.m. of dissolved oxygen, and below a pH value of about 6 at a dissolved-oxygen concentration of 8,2 p.p.m. The rest and pulp potentia Is measured indicated that dixanthogen is the dominant species formed on chalcopyrite surfaces during flotation with sodium ethyl xanthate. The results suggested that the same species might have formed on galena surfaces in the pulp after the ore had been milled in a ceramic mill under nitrogen. Increased additions of sulphurous, sulphuric, and hydrochloric acids increased the rest potentia Is, while the addition of sodium sulphite decreased these potentials.

There is a set of settled ideas in the field of the mechanics of rock mass joints, that need a deep revision, after the last experimental works of several authors. In this paper, this theme is approached under several viewpoints, like the following ones: the essential influence of the mating or mismatching of rock joints on their strength (different strength models are applicable to these two situations, one leading preferably to normal scale effects, and the other to inverse scale effects); Patton's model is a bad formulation of the joint strength, whenever there is a dilation effect in the slidings (actually, the essential consideration of the amplitude of the roughess isn't made by any limit equilibrium model, like Patton's model); the joint strength increases as the width perpendicular to the sliding direction is reduced (previous works of other authors suggested the independence of the strength on that width); the reduction of the anisotropy of the roughness, as the sample symmetry and sample dimensions increase; there is no scale effect in the discontinuity mechanics, if there is no roughness heterogeneity; when only the same roughness and undulation orders are involved in the tests, shorter samples have larger peak displacements and lower shear stiffnesses than larger samples (usually, the contrary is admitted). For all these reasons, there isn't an easy correlation between the small scale tests and the natural large joint scale. Only "in situ" large scale tests have some representativeness. All the above mentioned questions are correlated to each other. Anglo Platinum's Polokwane Smelter is situated outside Polokwane, in the Limpopo Province of South Africa. Wet concentrate is received from various concentrators along the Eastern Bushveld Complex. Approximately 60% of the total concentrate received is from UG2 Reef, and 40% is from Merensky Reef. The concentrate is dried in two flash dryers, and smelted in a single 168 MVA furnace. A PGM-rich nickel-copper matte is cast, crushed and transported to Rustenburg for converting. The plant was commissioned in March 2003. The wet concentrate, containing 12-18% moisture, is weighed, sampled by one of two auger samplers, and off-loaded into a concentrate shed, either directly through a grizzly into a hopper, or onto the floor. From the shed the concentrate is conveyed to 12 concrete silos. Each of the two identical flash dryers can be fed from six silos. From the flash dryers concentrate is transported pneumatically to a 3 000-ton dry concentrate storage silo. The flash dryers are rated at a nominal 66 tph of dry concentrate at 14% moisture, while the furnace can smelt 90 tph of dry concentrate. Therefore both flash dryers are required to operate when the furnace runs at design throughput. Each flash dryer consists of a hot gas generator (HGG), a disintegrator and drying column, and a section for gas/solids separation. In the HGG, gas heated up to 700° C is produced from the combustion of coal peas in a fluidized sand bed. The hot gas and wet concentrate are introduced to the disintegrator at the bottom of the drying column. The disintegrator breaks up any lumps of concentrate, and throws the concentrate up into the drying column, where it travels co-currently with the hot gas. A fan draws the hot gas from the drying column and through the gas/solids separation section, which consists of three primary cyclones, a multiclone and a high-temperature bag house. The dry concentrate reports to a 450-ton dry concentrate storage bin. A portion of dry concentrate is recycled to the wet concentrate feed in a paddle mixer, so that concentrate that is too wet does not enter the disintegrator. The drying column outlet temperature is controlled at 120° C. Coal is received by road, screened for oversize and conveyed to a 400-ton concrete silo. From here it is pneumatically conveyed to a small feed bin at each of the HGG' s. The optimization work consists of process control improvements relating to the HGG outlet temperature, to control the drying column temperature during the ramp-up of the HGG outlet temperature and bag filters. Furthermore a heat balance is used to evaluate options to increase the instantaneous drying capacity of the existing equipment. The coal consumption derived from the heat balance is compared with the actual coal consumption. The purpose of the optimization work is to achieve an operating schedule for the flash dryers such that they operate simultaneously for as short time as possible. Most of the time one flash dryer should operate, allowing maintenance to be done on the other flash dryer, while drawing down the dry concentrate stock. On 24th November, 1982, Mr L. W. P. van den Bosch was inducted as the President for 1982/1983 of the Associated Scientific and Technical Societies of South Africa, which represents more than 40 scientific, professional, and technical bodies. Lynne Wilson Pearson van den Bosch was born at Senekal in the Orange Free State on 11th February, 1921. He was educated at the Hoer Volkskool, Heidelberg, and the University of the Witwatersrand, where he obtained the B.sc. degree in mining engineering.

The main sulphide zone (MSZ) of the Great Dyke is cryptic and without obvious stratigraphic markers. Although there are trends in the dimensions of the PGE and base metal profiles across the Hartley Complex, the profiles are invariant within a particular mining area. Ratios derived from these profiles are used to interpret diamond drill cores drilled ahead of underground development. Detailed logging of oriented core shows the exact position and attitude of intersected faults. Metal ratios are used to estimate fault throw to within 25 cm. It is possible to draw detailed sections showing the extent of ground disturbance well ahead of mining. It examines changes in company concentration over the last 20 years in key mineral segments. Data at different stages of a project are examined to attempt to elucidate the role of the ?Juniors?. Areas for further research are suggested.

Material transfer in underground mines often relies on ore and waste pass systems. Over the years the authors have investigated the design and performance of orepass systems in several Canadian and South African mines. It has been recognized that while most mining operations have either implicitly or explicitly clearly defined objectives, in the design and successfully operate orepass systems there seems to be an absence of a strategy on how to best attain these goals. Consequently, it is not surprising that the majority of operations reviewed by the authors experience a number of problems of varying degrees of severity and economic consequences. This is illustrated by reference to both South African and Canadian operations. The second part of this paper focuses on a review of tactical interventions to rectify orepass problems or mitigate their impact. The paper closes with a framework for a flexible strategy for the design and operation of orepass systems. The South African gold and platinum deposits were formed in very different ways and yet both have many similarities. They are flat dipping tabular orebodies, extremely narrow and located in hard abrasive country rock. The mining methods employed are also similar. Primary access is via shafts or declines; secondary access is via haulages and cross-cuts; and tertiary access is from raises. The proposed solution for rapid access described in this paper is focused on the haulages and cross-cuts.

The attrition of activated carbon, and the loss of gold associated with it, is of significant economic importance to the operation of a CIP/CIL circuit The focus of this study was on activated carbon recovered from an elution circuit which was deemed too fine for reuse. Results of cyclosizer and laser particle size analysis identified that most of the carbon was contained in the larger size fraction suggesting formation by abrasion. Digestion and AAS analysis of the individual size fractions identified a disproportionate concentration of gold in the finer size fractions which was identified by scanning electron microscopy to be due to the presence of fine metallic gold formed as a result of the acid washing process. Attempts to strip the remaining gold using sodium hydroxide or sodium sulphide based solutions proved unsuccessful due to poor elution efficiencies and re adsorption of gold. Upgrading of the material by froth flotation was also investigated using various conventional flotation reagents which had some success in concentrating the free metallic gold, however, grade and/or recoveries were considered less than desirable. Greater success was ultimately found in the transfer of gold from the fine carbon material onto coarser virgin activated carbon using a caustic cyanide solution. Sodium sulphide, sodium chloride and ammonium chloride based solutions were also trialled but proved less successful owing to their inability to mobilise metallic gold or gold cyanide species. Repetition of the transfer process proved capable of stripping 97% of the gold contained on the carbon fines for abed volume ratio of 6:1.

This paper presents a quantitative approach to the problem of determining design capacity and field dimensions of underground coal mines using room- and-pillar mining systems. In evaluating these design variables, relationships among mining costs, number of production sections in mines, location of central shafts, mine field dimensions, section production, mine output, and cost of production losses due to underground man-traveling are analyzed. Thereby the unit cost of coal is expressed as a function of the design variables as well as input parameters such as seam angle, seam thickness, seam depth, underground traveling speed of men, mine recovery and plant recovery. The problem is then formulated as a nonlinear optimization model in terms of minimizing the unit cost of coal subject to a set of constraints and solved analytically for flat seams and numerically for inclined seams. Sensitivity analysis of the variables is also included in the paper.

Geological and geotechnical data are essential for the design of tunnels. To determine the rock mass behavior and the support of a planned tunnel excavation a consistent method for rock mass characterization and excavation and support determination has been developed. Probabilistic data processing with analytical methods is used for the quantification of the procedure and allows an evaluation of the applicability and the technical risk of different excavation and support methods. The sensitivity of the procedure on selected input parameters is highlighted in a parametric study. Finally an application of the procedure illustrates the use of the described method of probabilistic excavation and support determination for tunnels. Des données géologiques et géotechniques sont décisives pour la planification d’un tunnel. Pour la détermination du comportement des strates, le choix du soutènement et de la méthode de progression une description compréhensible de la montagne a été développée. À l'aide d'un traitement de données probabiliste, la procédure proposée est transposée quantitative sur une base de méthodes analytiques. De cette manière l'évaluation des méthodes de construction et la détermination du risque technique deviennent possibles. La sensitivité de la procédure de différents paramètres d'entrée est représentée dans une étude de paramètre. Pour finir, l'application de la procédure décrite est montrée à l’aide d'un cas pratique. Geologische und geotechnische Daten sind entscheidend für die Planung von Tunnels. Für die Ermittlung des Gebirgsverhaltens und der Festlegung von Ausbruch und Stützung wurde ein nachvollziehbarer Ablauf der Gebirgsbeschreibung entwickelt. Mit Hilfe von probabilistischer Datenverarbeitung auf Grundlage analytischer Methoden wird die vorgeschlagene Prozedur quantiativ umgesetzt. Dadurch werden die Bewertung von Baumethoden und die Ermittlung des technischen Risikos ermöglicht. Die Sensitivität des Verfahrens von einzelnen Eingangsparametern wird in einer Parameterstudie dargestellt. Abschließend wird anhand eines Beispiels die Anwendung des beschriebenen Verfahrens gezeigt.

Results are presented on the elution of gold cyanide and base-metal cyanide complexes from strongand weakbase resins. It is shown that thiocyanate anions, zinc cyanide anions, and thiourea in acid solution are effective eluants of strong-base resins, but that it is generally necessary for electrowinning to be incorporated in the elution cycle if fast rates of elution are to be achieved. Weakbase resins are eluted with sodium hydroxide solution, which is shown to be far simpler and far more effective than the elution of strong-base resins. The effects of parameters such as concentration of the eluant, temperature, and electrowinning efficiency on the rate of elution of the resins are examined.

The paper compares operational parameters for the electric reduction smelting of pig iron and ferroalloys in pilot and industrial furnaces. Data from two pilot furnaces of approximately 200 and 500 kW operating-load capacity, as well as from several production furnaces, are included. Examples are given for the smelting of pig iron, ferronickel, ferromanganese, ferrochromium, and ferrosilicon. In most instances, the results from the pilot furnaces, such as the values for consumption and product analyses, corresponded fairly well with comparable data from the industrial furnaces. For ferrosilicon, the power consumption in the pilot furnace was higher than that in the industrial furnace.

This paper addresses the need for a unifying model that will permit the selection and design of optimum materials for a given wear situation. With this objective in view, the characteristics of the various forms of abrasive, adhesive, and erosive wear are described in terms of localized stress, strain, strain rate, and frictional heating. The measured performance of a variety of metallic, ceramic, and polymeric materials and coated or surface treated materials are described briefly. These results were obtained under conditions of dry-particle abrasion, abrasion in conjunction with corrosion, cavitation erosion in liquids, erosion by particles in low- and high-velocity gas streams, and erosion by particles in a liquid stream. Electron microscopy was used extensively, together with microhardness profiles, in the determination of the modes of material detachment and the underlying deformations and structural changes. As a result of the experimental work, a model based upon a critical strain to microfracture is presented. The microstructural features and materials properties that determine wear resistance are discussed.

Traditionally it has commonly been believed that the only problem with inductive reactance in a submerged-arc furnace is that it leads to difficulties with the electricity supply as a result of the Iow power factor. This paper sets out to show that inductive reactance can also give rise to the following problems in the metallurgical operation of a furnace: (i) dead and live phases (fairly well known in openarc furnaces), (ii) lack of sensitivity to electrode movement, (iii) interactions between electrodes. These problems increase with increasing inductive reactance relative to resistance, and thus they increase with furnace size. Each of these effects is discussed in detail, and suggestions are made for their alleviation.

An evaluation was made of the wear and performance characteristics of liter bars, and the cost-life effectiveness of backing materials for rotary-mil liners. In a large run-of-mine mil in which the liter bars were mounted on grid liners of austenitic manganese steel (AMS), the liners had an average life that was five to six times that of equivalent unprotected liners. For a single mil, this is equivalent to annual savings in the cost of materials of up to R320 000, and to a downtime of 100 hours. Of the five materials tested in a large pebble mil grinding quartzitic ore, AMS grids and 'white iron' blocks performed best on a cost-life basis, with possibly improved performance from a real white cast iron. (The 'white iron' was shown by microstructural analysis to contain flake raphite and pearlite, being in reality a grey cast iron.) The high-chromium white iron had by far the longest predicted life, with mild steel a surprising second. Rubber was shown to last well in this type of mil. The wear rates of liners change during their lifetimes. The protective effect of liter bars was clearly illustrated by the reduction of over 40 per cent in the wear rates of the liners when the lifter bars were renewed to a height of 80 mm from a fully worn height of 35 mm.

Copper electrowinning models are useful for prediction of process performance, optimisation and improved understanding of complex phenomena such as current distribution without the expense of physical experiments. Recently, finite element models such as those generated in COMSOL Multiphysics have been developed for the electrowinning process. The predictive capacity of these models is improved by incorporating physical and chemical phenomena. Since physicochemical properties of electrolytes can have a significant effect on the quality of copper produced, this work was conducted to investigate the effect of such properties on electrodeposition at varying levels of copper, sulphuric acid concentration, iron concentration and temperature, in the presence of a smoothing agent. Tests were conducted at conditions similar to those for industrial copper electrowinning. Mathematical correlations were developed for the following properties; density, conductivity and diffusivity which were compared to existing models in literature and thereafter applied in a COMSOL generated model. The model predicts, current distribution at the cathode surface, deposit thickness (morphology), concentration of species within the cell and current efficiency. Current distribution output shows the impact of several phenomena on the deposit generated including the relationship between increasing copper concentration and current density and lack of influence of acid concentration on this property.
