Job evaluation and the changing wage pattern by D. L. VAN COLLER, B.A.(Cape Town), M.A., B.Litt.{Oxon.) (Visitor) This paper sets out to show how changing forces are affecting the techniques that have been used in the evaluation of Black jobs on gold mines in the Anglo American Group since the introduction of job evaluation in 1961. Initially, job evaluation was essentially a management tool designed to differentiate jobs in a limited skill spectrum and thereby permit the establishment of a 'many stepped' job ladder for Black employees to climb. With the changing wage pattern, job evaluation is becoming an industrialrelations tool aimed at recognizing the skill and effort contributed by the worker so that the pay relationships between jobs are seen to be equitable by the employees.

A computer-aided blast design consultant system has been developed. The software consists of two modules: one uses theoretical and empirical formulae and procedures to design a blast based on user supplied geological and mechanical data, while the other is an expert system that analyzes blast vibration problems and recommends remedial action using knowledge based rules. The system is currently undergoing field evaluation.

The conference was attended by traditional leaders in the North-West Province, officials from the Department of Local Government and Traditional Affairs, and executives from the mining industry. The presentation concerned traditional governance in mining, communities? rights in terms of applicable legislation, and the corporatization of community affairs.

Over the past couple of years, Anglo Platinum has made extensive use of technology within the core disciplines (geology, evaluation, survey, and planning) that collectively form part of mineral resource management (MRM). While these technologies were primarily developed to enable geology, evaluation, survey, and planning to carry out their daily tasks, with the main objective of supporting the mine?s production effort, they have also enhanced the disciplines? ability to produce the required outputs within the annual business planning cycle. Anglo Platinum has developed a very comprehensive business planning process, and these technologies play a vital role in enabling both the quality and quantity of inputs into the process, and also the value-add of the final product. This prompted a question regarding the practical application of the CADSMine software. If we changed our thinking in how we applied the software, would it be possible to further improve on the time taken to deliver a business plan? In changing the current planning approach, would we be able to further simplify the process? Is there a way to reduce the data generated in order to enhance the time taken to do reporting, as the CADSMine software is totally network dependent? Less data should equal faster reporting. This paper focuses on the practical application of the CADSMine software, and demonstrates the value-add to the business planning process that can be gained if the mine design methodology is changed from individual panels to bigger blocks representing a raise line.

"I have been involved in the refractory industry for many years and at some time or another I have designed materials, tested materials, manufactured materials, installed materials, in fact I have done everything except actually chemically analyzed a refractory material.So I would not even begin to tell you how to analyse a refractory material. I'm sure everyone here knows more about chemical analysis than I do.However you could regard me as a customer with and perhaps the insights I have developed may help in putting the role of chemical analysis in the Refractories into perspective.For a start, let's take a step back and ask why we test refractories. The refractories handbook of the American Foundry Association gives four reasons:1. To determine appropriate specification.2. For quality control, to ensure conformance to specifications.3. To provide special property information not available elsewhere.4. For postmortem analysis to determine property changes in service and provideinformation that can point the way to better service.I want to discuss these points with regard to the role of chemical analysis and in particular the abuse of in house chemical analysis facilities. The technique of backfilling in the gold mining industry is dependent on the dewatering of slurry to form a solid support system. In many cases flocculants are added to the slurry to increase the rate of dewatering. To ensure that a stable support is obtained it is important that the chemistry, application and limitations of these flocculant additives are understood. Flocculant additives have to be added at a point where minimum shear will occur. (Shear occurs when a flocculant is exposed to excess energy resulting in breakdown, of the floc.) To ensure that optimum results are obtained it is important that personnel involved are trained to use the flocculant additives and dosing equipment correctly.

Compañia Minera Antamina, Peru has recently completed a fifth year of operation of their 301-km concentrate pipeline. The pipeline was commissioned by PSI in May of 2001. The Antamina pipeline is generally accepted as one of the most complex slurry pipeline operations worldwide. The pipeline transports an average of 1.6 million tonnes of copper and zinc concentrates from the Yanacancha mine site at an elevation of 4 155 metres above sea level (masl) to the port of Huarmey at an elevation of 62 masl. Currently ten different types of concentrates are being transported as separate batches. The pipeline traverses oneof the most rugged areas in the world. It utilizes three different pipe diameters, and four remote valve stations to optimize the hydraulic design. PSI has recently completed an overall operational audi tof the Antamina pipeline. This paper evaluates the operational effectiveness of specific design features and operating philosophies, implemented during the engineering phase, over the last five years of operation.

The Schools A school on 'Measurement, Process Control and Optimization in the Minerals Industry', organized by The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, was presented twice by course leader Dr Ken Garner, ably assisted by the staff of the Measurement and Control Division of Mintek. The first school was held from 16th to 20th July, 1984, at the University of the Witwatersrand, and the second from 11th to 15th February, 1985, at Mintek. Project development The Sydney Branch of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy will hold a second Project Development Symposium in Sydney between 7th and 10th October, 1986. This second symposium will extend the range of topics covered by its predecessor in 1983 to emphasize planning (including strategic planning), construction, and project commissioning.

The first joint colloquium between the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and the South African Branch of the Institution of Metallurgists was held in Kelvin House on 23rd April, 1981. About eighty delegates registered, the majority being associated with the local branch of the Institution of Metallurgists. Types of Abrasion and Wear Professor A. Ball, of the University of Cape Town, gave the opening address, which he entitled 'Some Thoughts on Abrasion and Wear'. In his thoughtprovoking talk, he quoted some figures showing that, in the highly industrialized countries, loss by wear and abrasion might amount to about 4 per cent of the gross national product but, in the Republic of South Africa, it was believed to be about 6 per cent of the gross national productprobably associated with the massive influence of mining in our economy. Professor Ball described wear as being of three main types.

One of the main bottlenecks in the carbon-in pulp process for the recovery qf gold is the elution procedure, which typically requires the heading of caustic cyanide eluants to high temperatures for 16 to 24 hours. The present work demonstrates that sodium sulphide solution as an alternative eluant can effect complete elution in about 4 hours at ambient temperatures. Elution efficiencies of around 100 per cent were obtained in 4 hours with a single pass of eluant containing 0,2 M Na2S and 0,4 NaOH about 10 bed-volumes of eluant The initial rate was slow over the first hour of elution, probably because the activated carbon catalysed the oxidation of sulphide to polysulphide. Elution efficiencies of around 100 per cent were also obtained in less than 4 hours during the batch elution of carbon at liquid-to-solid ratio of about 100. Lower liquid to solid ratio resulted in the re-adsorption of gold, probably owing to the oxidation of sulphide to polysulphide, with the resultant formation of gold complexes that were eluted less readily. Improved rates of elution were obtained at higher sulphide concentrations and pH values greater than about 13. Higher temperatures increased the initial elution rate, but lowered the overall extraction efficiency, probably because of the deposition of elemental gold on the carbon. Variation of the ionic strength by the addition of NaCl had no defect on the elution, which confirms that the elution mechanism in the case of sulphide is different from that when cyanide or I1)1droxide is used as the eluant. It is proposed that the elution of gold by sulphide solutions proceeds by means of an initial step that involves the reaction of polysulphide ions with the adsorbed aurocyanide speeds, forming AuCN on the carbon and thiocyanate in solution. This step is followed by the formation of poorly adsorbed complexes with sulphide ions, such as [AUS3-2]-The presence of polysulphides, whether generated in situ by the catalytic oxidation effect of activated carbon or by the addition of elemental sulphur, reduces the elution rate and efficiency dramatically. This is probably due to the formation of complexes such as AUS-3 and AUS-2 , which have a high adsorption affinity.

The exploration of deposits generates geological data which are suitable for creating a preliminary tectonic and stratigraphic model. Linked with the topographical map and analysis data from exploration drillings, this information forms a numeric representation of the deposit. The following example demonstrates an expert system which connects chemical quality requirements and quarrying criteria, and develops a quarrying strategy based on the calculated model. Additional constraining factors like process technology, quarrying methods, landscape protection regulations, etc. are included. The goal is to guarantee a long-term, homogeneous material flow from the quarry at acceptable production costs - even in the case of an extraordinarily inhomogeneous deposit. In order to fulfil this requirement it is necessary to consider a large number of rules, criteria and instructions which can be structured as an expert system and programmed with LISP at a comparably low cost. The chosen strategy is not necessarily final, but can be changed any time by altering or varying the framework of conditions. The output consists of a block-working sequence which best satisfies the set requirements for appropriate points of quarry opening.

Tailings management aims to dispose of tailings at the minimum cost consistent with meeting or exceeding imposed standards, including legislative obligations. This simple business objective requires managing the tailings storage facility (TSF) risks associated with surface water, groundwater, dust, sustainable closure, and potential catastrophic failure. The individual nature of every orebody and specific site topography ensures that no one size fits all. It has been suggested that paste and thickened tailings (P&TT) provides the ability to tailor the production and transportation of tailings to suit the deposition site, rather than the traditional approach of accepting that the deposition site has to accommodate tailings of high variability. While the traditional approach can be made to work, it is directly linked to the catastrophic failures of tailings impoundments, where large volumes of decant water have triggered failures due to overtopping, piping or slope instability, or saturated tailings have simply liquefied. P&TT offers an ability to mitigate these risks, and when implemented into new projects with variable tailings streams there are significant benefits to be realized. This paper identifies the interdependencies between the various tailings disposal processes, such as thickening, pumping, and deposition. It demonstrates that there are benefits in taking a more integrated approach to the design and operation of tailings disposal facilities. A collaborative industry project to tackle this challenge is described.

The theoretical part of the paper presents an analysis of the conditions of Tl extraction from Pb using different extractants and determines the activity coefficients in liquid solutions of Pb-Tl and PbCl2-TlCl. The dependence of the solution activity coefficients upon the composition and temperature is presented in the form of Krupkowski and Krupkowski-Fitzner equations. An analysis and evaluation were made of the influence of the methods of PbCl2 introduction into a Pb-Tl solution upon the efficiency of the Tl extraction process under thermodynamic equilibrium conditions. The analysis made it possible to formulate relevant equations describing the dynamics of the process of Tl extraction from Pb under stirring conditions as well as under the extractant injection into the liquid Pb-Tl solution conditions. In the part concerning experimental work, results are given for tests on the Tl extraction process from Pb-Tl liquid solutions of initial Tl content of approximately 0.05% mass using PbCl2 or, alternatively, Cl2(g) conducted in laboratorial scale. The tests made it possible to establish the influence of time, temperature, mass and the method of introducing the extractants into the liquid upon the level of Tl extraction from a Pb-Tl solution. This research involves the investigation of phase transformations in the platinum-chromium coated system. Single-layer 0.1 µm platinum coatings were deposited via electron beam deposition on 99.98 percent pure chromium substrates. Specimens were subjected to systematic heat treatment in a vacuum furnace at 900°C for up to 20 hours. Phase formation and the changes in surface morphology were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM).Both CrPt and Cr3Pt phases are formed during heat treatment for different times at 900°C. Significant changes in the morphology of this coated system were detected after heat treatment at 900°C for 20 hours.

"Based on the complicated geological production conditions and abnormal strata behavior of the fully mechanized caving face No. 102 in the Xinyang Coal Mine, we analyze the breaking and forming process of distinguishing key block structures in close spaced coal seams. This analysis establishes an integrated mechanical model of these distinguishing structures. Furthermore, the horizontal force TAB generated by downward key blocks A and B is quantified, as is the Pressure PG exerted by key block B on caved gangue. Finally, the interaction mechanism is revealed. Analysis of the results using Mathematica reveal the following: 1. Both TAB and PG exhibit approximately inverse relationships to coal pillar width b; 2. TAB exhibits an approximately exponential relationship with mining height M of which the base is greater than 1; 3. PG exhibits an approximately arctangent relationship with mining height M. Combining these results with field observations, we conclude that the area in the vicinity of supports 100#–120# in the upper area of working face No. 102 is the likely zone of abnormal strata behavior. Thus, this area was classified as a key control area. Based on these results, the graded support control technique is proposed. Application of this technique in the field resulted in a reduction in the rate of hydraulic support system malfunction from 47% to 7% in the key control area. In addition, during times of periodic mining pressure, the roof caving height value never exceeded 0.3 m and the maximum spalling depth never exceeded 0.2 m. Overall, the results indicate that this new technique has markedly increased the stability of surrounding support rock material. IntroductionClose-spaced coal seams are widely distributed in China, and mining proceeds from the uppermost to the lowermost seam (Zhang et al., 2008). In the case of coal seams in close proximity, a particular set of risk factors becomes pertinent. These include disturbance of lower seams during the mining of overlying ones and the decrease in mechanical stability of lower coal seams following repeated movement of key blocks in main coal seam roofs. This inevitably results in behaviour such as heavy wall spalling and support damage to fully mechanized caving faces in lower-lying coal seams, which necessitates a significantly increase in the measures to support surrounding rock material (Zhang et al., 2010; Huang et al., 2013; Xie et al., 2013)."

One highly relevant challenge in flotation is the recovery of fine particles. Due to their low inertia, these particles are mostly pushed aside by rising bubbles. Consequently, they typically exhibit low probability for bubble-particle collision and thus, a poor recovery rate. In this work, the trajectories of fine particles in the vicinity of rising bubbles were investigated. The measurements considered a chain of millimetric bubbles in a rectangular container filled with deionized water. The flow field near the bubbles was measured by tomographic particle image velocimetry (TPIV), employing fluorescent tracer particles of 33μm diameter. Subsequently, trajectories of larger particles and bubble-particle collision events are recorded with 4D particle tracking velocimetry using a high temporal and spatial resolution. The results reproduce the well-known collision of particles on the leading edge of a rising bubble. Additionally, collisions on the tailing edge were observed in cases with a low Stokes number. The TPIV results demonstrate, that the high turbulent kinetic energy in the bubble wake allows particles to divert from the fluid streamlines and collide with the tailing edge of the bubble. The tailing edge collision probability increases with the bubble Reynolds number and decreased particle inertia. Overall, the investigation shows that the collision of fine particles in the bubble wake should be considered for the development of further collision probability models. Furthermore, the importance of turbulence on the fine particle flotation was demonstrated. Medium suspensions play an integral part in the successful application of dense medium separation for both static and dynamic separators. Although models exist to predict particle movement as a function of medium density and viscosity, these models have been derived on the assumption of Newtonian rheology. Viscosity measurements of medium suspensions have shown that they are non-Newtonian, with a yield stress, and as such cannot be used in the existing models. As a result, medium selection remains an art based upon practical experience and indirect measurements of viscosity such as stability and cyclone differentials.

Many of the pyrite concentrates produced at South African gold and uranium mines contain economically significant amounts of nickel, copper, and cobalt, apart from gold and uranium. In some cases these concentrates are leached for uranium, followed by roasting and cyanidation of the calcine for the extraction of the gold. Even if their intrinsic value is excluded, the presence of appreciable amounts of base metals can lead to excessive consumption of cyanide and zinc in the conventional process for the recovery of gold from calcines. The extent to which base metals, particularly cyanocides in the calcine, can be made soluble in water or in dilute acid by variation of the pyrite roasting conditions was investigated. An important finding of the investigation was that the conditions producing favourable base-metal sulphation (and hence solubility in water) also produced good sulphation of the uranium values that had not been extracted in a conventional leach of the original pyrite. Thus, if the pyrite is subjected to a sulphating roast followed by quenching in water (or dilute acid), it should be possible for the uranium to be extracted in improved yield. The need for leaching of the pyrite would therefore fall away. It was noted that sulphation roasting also resulted in improved gold extractions when the calcine was subsequently subjected to conventional cyanide-extraction procedures. From well-sulphated calcine, the dissolution of base metals and uranium appeared to be fairly independent of leaching pH, time, and temperature. On an inadequately sulphated calcine, Iow pH values during leaching gave increased extraction of copper and uranium but did not have a significant effect on the dissolution of nickel and cobalt. The extraction of uranium increased with increasing leaching time and temperature, while only longer times at a Iow pH value markedly improved the extraction of copper. The extraction of cobalt was fairly independent of leaching time and temperature, but the results were insufficient for a conclusive evaluation to be made of their effects on the dissolution of nickel. A cursory economic assessment 'indicated that sulphation roasting applied to the pyrites investigated is likely to be very profitable.
