Ancient Mining - The following three contributions were received for publication in addition to the preceding papers. 1. Ancient gold-mining sites in the Transvaal G. M. THAIN* Pre-European gold mining and working in South Africa is a tantalizing field for conjecture. Well over thousand sites have been identified in Rhodesia, but here we have had to reach double figures, judging by published accounts. Geologically, the Transvaal is less amenable primitive exploitation, but it difficult to reject the idea that the knowledge gained to the north did not have its influence south of the Limpopo.

"A well-performing solvent-extraction circuit is a key part of producing good quality copper cathode. To ensure consistent operation, a good understanding of the circuit’s operation and an ability to rapidly troubleshoot key parameters is required. This paper briefly discusses the modeling of solventextraction circuits. The paper then goes on to discuss the determination of key performance parameters from plant data and comparing these with the circuit models to quantify circuit performance. The identification and troubleshooting of circuit issues is presented with a worked example. INTRODUCTIONA well-performing solvent-extraction (SX) circuit is a key part of producing good quality copper cathode. To ensure a consistent, high-quality operation, a good understanding of the circuit performance is required. Evaluating the performance of an SX circuit is an extensive topic. The objective of this paper is to focus on the evaluation that the metallurgist should be performing on a regular basis using flow and concentration data. This paper does not cover important topics, such as crud management, phase continuity, or organic management. Some basic SX modeling concepts are first be presented. The calculation of the parameters is then presented with a brief discussion and recommended ranges (where applicable). A worked example is used to provide a basis for further discussion on the evaluation of the calculated parameters and use of data collected.BASIC SOLVENT-EXTRACTION MODELING CONCEPTSThis section presents the basic modeling concepts used in SX simulation packages currently available. SX reagent suppliers have invested significant time and effort into collecting data on the performance of their reagents under different conditions. Based on these data, suppliers have developed packages which they normally make available to their clients for free. These are typically used for process design and plant optimization studies. For example, BASF developed ISOCALCTM and CYTEC Industries developed MINCHEM® and MEUMTM.Chemistry of Copper Solvent ExtractionLiquid–liquid extraction involves the selective transfer of a substance between two immiscible liquid phases by controlling the relative solubility in each phase. In the case of copper SX, the exchange is typically achieved by an oxime-based chelating mechanism. In particular, mixtures of aldoxime and ketoxime are normally used in conjunction with modifiers. Interpretation of Leached Outcrops, by Roland Blanchard. Published by Nevada Bureau of Mines, University of Nevada, Reno, Nevada, 89507, 1968, 188 pages. Price $7.50 (R5.40). This book contains a summary of the author's knowledge of leached outcrops, derived from some 30 years' experience as a geologist operating mainly in the United States of America and Australia. Part 1 of the book provides a comprehensive coverage of the various processes and substances involved in the oxidation of many minerals, under different climatic conditions, to form the final leached products. In Part 2, details are given of the appearance and composition of the oxidation products of the following minerals: pyrite, pyrrhotite, arsenopyrite, cha1copyrite, cha1cocite, bornite, tetrahedrite, oxidized copper minerals, galena, cerussite, sphalerite, molybdenite, chromite, hematite, magnetite, manganite, pyrolusite, calcite, siderite, fluorite, salite and supergene silica. The illustrations, the black and white photographs and the colour plates of oxidation products are of a high standard. The material is presented in a logical order and in terms which are not over-technical; hence it is useful to persons other than trained geologists. Despite the advances in geophysical and geochemical prospecting, the location and interpretation of gossans remains an important method of discovering ore bodies, particularly so since the correct interpretation of a leached material can prevent the fruitless and expensive prospecting of an underlying body of uneconomic concentration. Therefore it is considered that this volume will be a valuable addition to the libraries of universities, exploration companies and geologists. It is of interest to note that the author, who died in 1966, presented a paper, under the same title as this book, to the Chemical, Metallurgical and Mining Society of South Africa in 1939. For this work he was awarded the Society's Gold Medal. W.T.S.

The objective of ergonomics is to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency with which human tasks are carried out. Furthermore, the objective is to improve desirable human values. This can be achieved by enhancing safety, reducing fatigue and stress, increasing comfort, increasing job satisfaction, having greater user acceptance and thereby improving the quality of life. Mechanization has influenced the prevalence of injury, mainly due to the application of human physical effort as the power source. With mechanization, the operator’s function is now essentially one of control rather than being an energy source, however the risk of injury has not diminished. Mechanization in itself has introduced inefficiencies, health risks and physiological stress. The major objectives of ergonomics are discussed through examples of acceptable and less successful implementation of ergonomics within mechanized mining. The influence of the machine system on the human is addressed and practical solutions to improve and optimize the interaction of the human and the machine are outlined. Furthermore, practical examples of control and display integration, anthropometric and biomechanic influences on design, orientation, posture and stereotypes are used to accentuate the advantages of the application of sound ergonomics principles to the specialised area of mechanized mining.

The stability of pillars is analysed on the assumption that pillars shed load in a stable manner if the slope the strata load-deformation relation is steeper than that of pillars in the post-peak regime. Concepts of local stiffness, mine structural stiffness, and critical stiffness are discussed. Procedures are described for the determination of strata stiffness for various pillar layouts by use of the available boundary-element computer programs. The postpeak stiffness of pillars is assessed from the available data relating to the post-peak load-deformation relationship and width-to-height ratio. Stability analyses are carried out by the contrasting of strata stiffness with post-peak pillar stiffness. It is shown that the strata stiffness becomes unacceptably small for a stable yield-pillar layout when the span exceeds about 5 times the depth. The strata stiffness is found to increase, thereby increasing the stability, as the span-to-depth ratio, number of pillars, and percentage extraction are decreased. It is also found that the stability in a yield pillar becomes difficult to achieve when al the pillars in a layout are in the descending part their post-peak load-deformation curve

Global trends stipulate the need to optimize existing assets while reducing environmental impacts. This paper illustrates the procedure that was followed to achieve such goals at one of the coal burning flash dryer units at an Anglo American smelter. An in-depth study of the process and related literature led to the development and installation of a revised control philosophy. This system includes modifications to the existing regulatory control structure as well as a hybrid rule-based and model-predictive advanced process control (APC) layer. Since commissioning of the APC, this flash dryer?s average throughput has increased by more than 6%, despite higher feed moistures. Furthermore, even though coal consumption has increased slightly, operating efficiency has improved by close to 5%. This was made possible by improving stability of the drying column outlet temperature by approximately 40%, which in turn enabled selection of a more optimal setpoint. Recent data has shown that APC utilization now exceeds 95%. This is indicative of a successful controller installation with good site acceptance. The same philosophy has therefore since been rolled out to most of the other flash dryers in the group.

Discussion: M. D. G. Salamon* (Fellow): The theoretical principles behind the techniques of calculation used by the authors was formulated and published during the period 1962- 65. These principles, together with their practical implications, were summarized in a review paper in 1966.1 Now, in February, 1970, we have this long and comprehensive paper discussing the practical application of the theory. I think this is good progress. The large number of practical examples treated in the paper clearly demonstrates not only the skill and knowledge of the authors, but also the versatility of the techniques of analysis. I feel that the techniques described by the authors, and their improved versions, will revolutionize mine planning. I suggest that no shaft system or stoping layout should be planned in future without an adequate rock mechanics analysis. It seems that it will be progressively more difficult to white wash mistakes in rock mechanics and attribute their costly outcome to normal mining risk. We should not, however, become complacent. There is still a lot to learn and do in the future. I do not want to discuss tonight the question of further research but instead, I will raise two other problems which may hinder the future progress of practical rock mechanics. To carry out work similar to that described in the paper, mine managements require men who are capable of doing the work and who have the most efficient techniques of analysis at their disposal. As a research engineer I have been associated with the development of techniques of analysis. I can assure you that these have undergone an amazingly rapid development during the last six years. We have seen the change from the use of the electrolytic tank analogue and manual integration to the method described by the authors, that is, to the employment of the automatic network analogue and computer integration. But this is not the end. In a recent paper Prof R. P. Plewman2 and his co-authors described a completely digital technique. Here the process of calculating on- and off-reef quantities is integrated into one computer run. But these sophisticated methods of computation are useless without men to make intelligent use of them. During the last few years a new breed of mining engineers has appeared on the scene - the Rock Mechanics Engineer. I feel it is timely to call the attention of the senior members of this Institute to the fact that this new breed will succeed in carrying out its duties in a valuable manner only if we manage to attract to its ranks young engineers of the right quality. The requirements are high. The top rock mechanics engineers have to be good mine planners and they have to understand the essence of sophisticated theories. Without these attributes they will not succeed in the long term and the industry will not gain the benefit of available knowledge. To attract this quality of engineers the industry will have to ensure that rock mechanics is accepted by all concerned as a career which could lead to the top echelons of our profession. Finally, I would like to make one or two remarks concerning Part I of the paper. In Sections 3.1 and 3.2 the authors describe methods of determining the normal stress on the reef plane and the convergence distribution in the excavations. The description as given applies only to a horizontal reef. When the reef is inclined the situation is more complex since a shear component of stress on the intact reef and a ride component in the excavations must then also be determined. These can be calculated by methods similar to that described in the paper.3 The practical application of the method of calculating the released energy (Section 3.4) is in the comparison of various stoping layouts to establish an order of preference in terms of decreasing rates of energy release. To carry out these comparisons effectively, the calculations must be carried out in a manner by which the values of energy per unit area obtained are comparable. I would like to note in this respect that the method of calculation given in the paper is valid without reservation only if there is no elastic contact between the hanging and foot walls in the mined-out area. If there is contact then the calculated energy values are correct only if the mined out area is increased in small steps during the analysis. My second point in this regard is concerned with the practical method of calculation as described in Sections 3.4 (ii)-(iii). Firstly, I would like to suggest that the energy calculation should be carried out, as far as possible, by using always the same scale on the analogue. Secondly, the reading of current on a pin should be followed by the removal of that pin to obtain the corresponding reading of potential. The product of these two values will be proportional to the energy released during the mining of the small area corresponding to that pin. The method suggested by the authors tends to mask possible danger points in the layouts, since they obtain an average value for a time period, say, for six months.

In the wake of the financial crisis that affected world markets in 2002, there has been an increasing international focus on corporate governance. Various corporate governance codes of practice have been introduced, such as the Sarbanes-Oxley legislation in the USA, the Combined Code in the UK, and King III in South Africa. This focus on corporate governance has increased since the most recent financial crisis in 2008, the effects of which are still being felt world-wide. In the mining and minerals industry, reliable metal accounting is essential to sound corporate governance and is also becoming a focus of increased attention and concern, particularly as the figures generated by the metal accounting system feed directly into the financial accounts of mining companies. Mass measurement, sampling, and analysis provide the input data for the metal accounting system and sound corporate governance requires that the procedures used are based on best practice and that the data generated is accurate and handled correctly, transparently, and consistently to produce the accounting reports. The AMIRA Code of Practice for Metal Accounting has been widely adopted in the industry as a means to achieve this, and the compilers of the Code have conducted numerous metal accounting audits at operations, both in South Africa and abroad. Australian mining companies are actively exploring for and developing mineral deposits throughout the world with interests in emerging markets such as Africa, Asia and South America. It is important to understand emerging market risk as this will affect the willingness of mining companies and financial institutions to invest in a country, especially with reference to their key asset, the mining licence or operating/concession agreement. Mining companies looking to develop new projects in emerging markets have different risk profiles than projects in countries such as Australia and Canada. Examples of key risks faced in emerging markets include: 1. political - expropriation, nationalisation, contract frustration, currency inconvertibility, war, terrorism, strikes, riots and civil commotion; and 2. legal - mining legislation, arbitration and dispute resolution, trade agreements. There is a problem in the difference in risk perceptions between mining companies, financial institutions and insurers. This can cause different stakeholders to carry out different evaluations of the risks faced by a project, resulting in confusion about the risk margin attached to any project. In a time where resource nationalisation and energy security are prompting governments to become more involved in the mining sector we run through some recent examples of mining companies that have had problems due to the key risks highlighted earlier. Importance of carrying out the right due diligence to replace perceptions with reality: ? early identification of risks - detailed due diligence on emerging market risks that may arise will help with their identification and mitigation, ? make use of companies that can help identify risks and suggest solutions, ? control the cost of financing - risk margin applied to a project ? finance loan will be influenced by the risks faced, and ? risk management and using political risk insurance. There are plenty of opportunities in emerging markets but it is important to recognise the associated risks. Detailed due diligence at an early stage will provide long-term benefits.

"Developing a greenfield mining project is a complex exercise: doing so in an increasingly volatile, uncertain, and ambiguous global economy adds significantly to this complexity. In the context of an elevated cobalt price, this paper outlines the metallurgical and process development of the Mutoshi copper–cobalt project for copper cathode and cobalt hydroxide production in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Chemaf has a long production history on the Copperbelt, a region widely perceived to be tough to operate in. This history stretches back to 2001, during which time the company has developed two copper–cobalt processing facilities. The experience gained in the development and operation of these two facilities has been used extensively in the Mutoshi copper–cobalt project. The metallurgical test work, process design, and project delivery approach are presented. Additionally, the decisions taken to minimize risk and maximize upside to the project are discussed. IntroductionChemaf (Chemicals of Africa), a mining company located in Katanga province of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), has been operating since 2001 with two major copper– cobalt processing facilities: the Usoke and Etoile plants. In 2016, Chemaf acquired the Mutoshi mine, which belonged to Gecamines and had been explored by Anvil Mining since 2004 under a joint venture with Gecamines. Chemaf appointed African Mining Consultants Ltd (AMC) to undertake a preliminary economical assessment, then develop a JORCcompliant Mineral Resource estimate and finally a full life-of mine feasibility study. Both a Mineral Reserve and Mineral Resource were developed and the final life-of-mine feasibility study is to be published shortly. A metallurgical test work programme was initiated and carried out by Chemaf’s research and development laboratory with assistance from the Chemaf process team. After completion of the initial test work, Chemaf developed a process design criteria document for a 20 kt/a copper cathode and 8 kt/a cobalt in hydroxide production plant, followed by a flow sheet and supporting METSIM mass balance. As the drilling progressed, the plant design capacity was revised to 16 kt/a cobalt production. The life of the mine at this production rate is over 40 years."

SYNOPSIS A discussion is presented of the advances that have been made in rotary drilling in recent years and it is indicated how and why these drills have replaced percussive equipment even in the hardest formations at larger than 7 in. diameter. A method is presented showing how it is possible to estimate drill requirements and how to optimize drilling and blasting costs for a particular situation. To do this it is necessary to have, in addition to drill performance data, a knowledge of comparative explosive performance. Current methods of doing this are therefore critically appraised. As hole diameters have increased for overall drilling and blasting economies the question of fragmentation arises. In North America this has been approached on a try-it-and-see basis giving results that, in general, have been very satisfactory. The current drilling and blasting practices in North America are reviewed and reference made to the factors of importance in slope control.

Minerals and Manpower - PRESIDENTIAL ADDRESS given by R. P. Plewman, Pr. Eng., B.Sc. (Eng) (Wits), M.A. (Oxon.) INTRODUCTION What I want to discuss is the future pattern of manpower in the mining industry, and I should like to begin by examining some relevant statistics. There are four areas that must be examined. Firstly, the future rate of production of different minerals must be estimated. Secondly, an assessment must be made of the balance of different mining technologies likely to be used for each mineral. Thirdly, the manpower requirements for each technology must be determined. A Colloquium on 'Control and Simulation in the Minerals Industry' was held at the Holiday Inn, Milner Park, on 20th September, 1984, in conjunction with the Electra Mining Exhibition. A total of 170 persons attended the very full morning programme, which began with an opening address by the President, The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, Mr l.D. Austin. He outlined the reasons why computers were being used to an ever-increasing extent for control and simulation in the minerals industry. The computer was even used to check, among other things, the validity of the signals it was receiving by mass-balance calculations.

Metal sulphides are usually semiconductor and their electrical conductivity is low; therefore they are sources of electrons and promote electrochemical reactions. This phenomenon is of significant importance in sulphide flotation. The formation of a hydrophobic surface on the sulphide minerals is the result of various electrochemical reactions. Potential difference in the mineral-liquid interface plays an important role in the kinetics of the reactions, and consequently, on the flotation behaviour of sulphides. The value of the potential difference is influenced by different oxidation-reduction reactions at the interface area, and is measured by a two-electrode system in which an electrode is applied as reference electrode. In this study, we attempted to measure open-circuit potentials of pyrite, pyrrhotite, and steel electrodes with respect to the reference electrode. To verify the results, two reference electrodes, saturated calomel and gold, were used. Time-potential relations with respect to both reference electrodes show that the potential of both pyrite and pyrrhotite increases with time; however, this trend decreases for steel except when at pH 12. The results show a potential drop by an increase in pH value, except for steel, for which the opposite holds. This paper discusses galvanic interactions between minerals and grinding media in the grinding circuits, as well as among other minerals in the flotation processes.

The spontaneous combustion of coal and the explosion of coal dust are two phenomena that were identified by the South African mining industry as requiring investigation. Research contracts were awarded to the G.P. Badenhorst Research Facility of the CSIR and the Department of Mining Engineering of the university of the Witwatersrand by the now defunct National Energy Council. Both projects entailed tests on numerous coal samples in specially designed apparatus. Since the completion of the project, attempts have been made to predict experimental results without incurring the cost of performing experiments. This paper describes predictive indices, based on routine laboratory tests, that were developed by the different research teams for their particular projects. A comparison of the results obtained by applying the spontaneous combustion liability index and the explosibility index to common coal samples indicates that, in general, propensity to spontaneous combustion and explosibility exhibit an inverse relationship. A brief overview is given of some major South African coal-mine disasters.

One of the key issues facing gold producers is the management of cyanide and the implementation of the International Cyanide Management Code. Many operations now use cyanide destruction processes to ensure that the material being discharged to the tailings dam is compliant with regulatory requirements and the International Cyanide Management Code. One of the problems for operations is the quantification of both cyanide species and their reaction products throughout the leach and destruction circuits. Therefore methods have been developed utilizing high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) to measure free cyanide, cyanide complexes of metals such as copper and iron, and other species formed from reactions in leaching and cyanide destruction, including cyanate, thiocyanate, and sulphur species (eg. sulphite, thiosulphate and sulphate). This enables a complete mass balance for cyanide and sulphur in both leaching and cyanide destruction. This paper outlines the methodology which has been developed and discusses the application of these methods in the fundamental research currently being conducted on the impact of sulphide minerals in cyanidation and cyanide destruction chemistry.

The results of a series of measurements of accelerations and guide-roller loads made on mineshaft conveyances are given, together with the predictions of these accelerations and loads based on a computer programme. The analysis of the measurements is described, and the results of the measurements and computer predictions when compared show reasonable agreement. Some parameters that increase the guide-roller loads are identified, and their effects are studied, together with some comments on the total loads. Finally, a possible format for a design specification is discussed, and some tentative design values are given.

Drilling, Blasting, and Ore winning A General Meeting and Colloquium on the above subject was held on November 13th, 1974, at Kelvin House, Johannesburg. Professor R. P. Plewman (President) was in the Chair. The Colloquium was attended by 235 delegates and was opened by the President at 09h30.
