The factors affecting haul truck tyre performance and the effectiveness of the management system at Rossing Uranium Mine were investigated with the aim of increasing tyre performance in terms of running hours until failure. The main objectives were to identify the types of tyre failure, their causes and cost implications, and evaluate the effectiveness of the management system. A site severity survey, weight study, and TKPH studies were conducted to determine the pit conditions, and an analysis of failed tyres carried out. The results showed that tyre performance at the mine has declined from 2009 to date, and the increase in lost value amounted to R5.7 million in 2012 alone. The main cause of tyre failure is loose rocks in the pit. The present management system in the load and haul department is not effective enough due to operational constraints it is facing.

Understanding chemical interactions at solid-liquid interfaces have played a pivotal role in improving mineral flotation performance, increasing the rate of mineral crystallisation and profitable leaching of valued minerals and metals. This paper highlights gold leaching with links to surface and interfacial chemical processes occurring, and opportunities to maximise extraction while reducing usage of more recent scarce resources. From the review, there is a significant link between surface and interfacial processes and gold leaching performance. Evidently, gold leaching kinetics could be increased by changing leaching conditions, including manipulating the surface and interfacial interactions. Control of surface and interfaces during gold extraction could enhance rapid, smarter gold extraction and mitigate formation of passivation layers. A simple mathematical model is presented that relates the 'head' developed at the surface of pulp in a tank to the power dissipated by the air in producing it. The value for the head is then used in the calculation of the superficial circulating velocity of the pulp and the area of the overflow, and the product of these two values gives the pumping rate of the pulp. Thus, the superficial circulating velocity, and hence pumping rate of the pulp, are related directly to the flow-rate of the air. This hypothesis was tested with good results in an air-agitated pachuca tank (of 1 m in diameter) fitted with a draught tube. The method can also be used for the prediction of the pumping rates in production-scale vessels.

A knowledge of the steady-state mass and energy requirements of a particular process is essential to a determination of the economic feasibility of that process. A predictive simulation technique can be of great value in this respect. A versatile computer program based on a fundamental thermodynamic approach has been developed for the prediction of process requirements. The equilibrium composition of a multiphase system is determined by the technique of free energy minimization. Energy-balance calculations are performed using the appropriate thermodynamic data for the chemical species present in the composite materials used. All models for the process units under consideration are written in modular form, the output being calculated from the input and the specified operating conditions. The computer program is written in such a way that it can be used easily by anyone familiar with the processes involved, even though he may have no previous experience with a program of this type. The program is structured so as to facilitate the varying of one parameter without any alteration to the others, thus simplifying the investigation of the effects of any parameters considered to be important. The program has the advantage of being able to compare existing and new processes on the same basis, namely from the ores to the molten metal.

The paper describes the difficulties experienced with inferior coking coals as Iscor began using larger blast furnaces for the production of liquid iron. Research conducted at Iscor from 1977 to 1979 showed that benefits could be gained from the use of partially briqueted charges, and it was decided to install briqueting plants at the Vanderbijlpark and Newcastle Works. Details are given of the later plant, which was supplied by a consortium consisting of Voest Alpine, Didier Engineering, and Sumitomo Metal Industries. Sumitomo also supplied information on the optimization of coke quality along the lines of their Sumicoal System. The results have been a marked improvement in coke quality, much better blast-furnace operation, and increased productivity.

This paper ,examines the kinetics of the extraction of uranium from acid sulphate solutions by strongbase anionexchange resins. Parameters such as the concentration of uranium in solution. the agitation of the resin beads in solution. the size of the resin beads. and the degree of cross-linking within the resin matrix were varied. and the effec ts on the kinetics are reported. The applicability, of various empirical kinetic models to the description of the data is assessed, and an attempt is made at the modelling of the rate data in terms of established theories about the diffusion of ions through films of stagnant liquid and through spherical beads of resin.

The multi-reef area of Cooke 3 Shaft provides a unique mining challenge on account of the very thin middlings between the pay bands and the marginal values of the reef. It is uneconomic or impractical, because of the excessive heights, to mine the middlings using conventional stoping methods. The development of suitable mining methods is discussed with particular emphasis on the control of water inflow and the policy of not jeopardizing or sterilizing other reef horizons by the mining method implemented. No definite solution is currently available, but with the aid of instrumentation, computer analyses and mechanized mining equipment, the mine continues to attempt to maximize extraction and profits.

"Recoverable mineral resources assessment has become a standard geostatistical application in the mining industry, with various geostatistical techniques currently available. This investigation aimed to improve the prediction at the Sungun deposit and to obtain mineral resource models capable of handling (i) the change of support from drill-hole composites to selective mining units (SMUs), (ii) the multivariate nature of the ore control selection criteria that involves both copper and molybdenum grades; and (iii) the local uncertainty on the true (unknown) grades. The solution presented in this paper is to use direct block-support sequential cosimulation in order to construct a set of alternative outcomes of the copper and molybdenum grades on block support over the deposit, with no need for storing point-support values, hence with a considerable gain in memory management and CPU time. The grade realizations so obtained are then processed to calculate the uncertainty in the mineral resources that can be recovered above given cut-off grades, both globally and on a blockby- block basis. IntroductionGeostatistical methods are widely used by mining companies to determine a resource model of the tonnage and head grade of a potential orebody, which is one of the first and most critical inputs underpinning any mining project. The prediction of the grade, tonnage, and recoverable metal for a particular mining plan and the corresponding financial forecast constitute the main technical risks in mineral resource evaluation. The conventional approach to this problem is to predict the mineral grade for constant volumes relevant to the mining plan and to base the recoverable mineral resource calculations on those predictions. Alternatively, one can directly predict the local variability in the mining block grades based on a spatial distribution model (David 1988; Rossi and Deutsch 2014). Multiple realizations can also be constructed by conditional simulation, providing a more complete representation of block grade uncertainty, as well as the uncertainty over multiple blocks. Simulation methods allow quantification of the uncertainty of the mineral resource prediction risks in downstream studies such as mine design, mine planning, or operational optimization studies; the risk assessment is achieved after applying transfer functions to the conditional simulation models (Dimitrakopoulos 2012; Rossi and Deutsch 2014)."

There are a couple of dozen junior platinum mining companies coming into existence in Southern African and most intend to mine, concentrate the PGM?s in a flotation product and sell the concentrate to one of the major producers in South Africa. The price they will receive for their product and hence the return they achieve for their investment will depend upon the large number of factors that influence the market for such a product. Unfortunately the number of buyers is severely limited as it is dominated by the two major local producers, Impala Platinum and Anglo Platinum. Furthermore the current smelting technology has limited capacity for UG2 concentrates and high nickel concentrates will quickly fill any available base metal refining capacity. Few if any overseas buyers can compete for the bulky flotation concentrate produced. This paper will explore those factors such as metal recoveries, metal prices, operating costs, capacity constraints, deleterious elements, transport issues, metal premiums and discounts that are in play, types of flotation concentrates, processing capital costs, PGM grades, etc and their impact up on what smelters and refiners might be prepared to pay for such PGM concentrates. Ultimately simple graphs and equations can be developed for probably payment terms for such concentrates. Those who negotiate well will move to the higher return section of the envelope and those who use the concentrator facilities to produce the most saleable combination of flotation concentrates will enhance their returns. A deep and firm understanding of the issues surrounding this market is necessary in order to negotiate the best possible price for the seller.

Development of new technologies and procedures for managing mineral residues and wastes may benefit from a clear understanding of existing tailing management practices. There is a considerable variability in tailing management techniques used in the Australian copper and gold operations, with associated differences and flow-on effects for the mine site water balance. A database was created, capturing a total of 41 copper and gold processing operations in Australia. The database provides information on tailing generation rates, tailing properties (solids contents and particle size distributions) and tailing storage facility (TSF) types and configurations (e.g. total TSF surface area and wetted surface area). Significant variability was found for the above-mentioned parameters. The solid tailing generation rates ranged from 0.5-37 Mt per annum in 2015. Furthermore, both the solids contents and particle size ranges of the tailing were highly site-specific, and largely dependent on the processing flowsheets. Solids contents of tailings ranged from 45-74% by weight whilst P80 sizes of the concentrator (flotation) feed varied from 75-185 μm. The estimated pumping distance was up to 15 km. The presented data can potentially be used to better tailing management strategies by estimating the potential recoverable water and recycling it, thereby thus reducing tailing footprints. Since its introduction in 1956, the capital allowance has been increased and its scope widened. At present the allowance is 10% in respect of two categories of gold mine (post-1973 and other deep level mines) and 6% in respect of natural oil mines. The allowance is a significant incentive encouraging the development of new mines, to the benefit of both the fiscus and the South African economy as a whole. A strong case can be made for increasing the amount and the scope of the allowance. The Margo Report recommendation that the allowance should possibly be replaced with a system of direct grants is, in theory, neutral. However, practical difficulties exist with cash grants and there is concern with the implications elsewhere in the Margo Report that the capital allowance is excessive and that, as a consequence, such direct grants will represent an effective reduction in this incentive. I believe that the best course of action would be the retention (and enhancement) of the capital allowance and the expansion of its scope.

Froth flotation is well-established and efficient in the selective separation of valuable particles from unwanted material with sizes ranging from 10 μm to 200 μm. However, when it comes to the separation of ultrafine particles (< 10 μm) there are still some challenges, or rather opportunities. This research aims at developing a method for the separation of ultrafine particles based on multiple particle properties. Amongst such properties are wettability, morphology (shape or roughness) and size with applications not only in mineral processing but in general chemical engineering. In this study, three differently shaped fractions are used as valuables for testing: spherical particles, elongated particles and irregularly shaped particle fragments; together with ultrafine magnetite as the gangue material, in order to investigate the effect of particle morphology on ultrafine particle flotation, as well as wettability, which is varied by esterification using alcohols. Flotation tests are carried out using a novel flotation device that was designed especially for the flotation of ultrafine particles, combining advantages from machine-type froth flotation and column flotation. The results showed that, in contrast to previous studies, recoveries for ultrafine spheres were higher than for ultrafine fragments for all wettability conditions, and hydrophobisation generally increased particle recoveries for said morphologies. Tests using fibres showed different behaviour as hydrophobisation had negative effects on their recovery, despite increased selectivities and kinetics. These findings suggest that apart from influences of particle properties within the suspension zone, their effects on the froth characteristics should be studied in more depth. Until 2000, pricing involved profit taking and cost covering combined with limited global published information. Market information was mostly subjective in nature and large resource companies benefited exclusively from aggregated company information and data. The market constituted producers and consumers only. The nineties saw massive cost cutting drives and re-engineering initiatives and this underwrote the structural changes evident in the late 1990s? economy. This supported South African producers on the international FOB cash cost curve, and ensured profitable coal mining operations. As the debate on relative scarcity of fossil fuels ensued, producers and buyers looked to the developing terminal coal market for direction. The much needed direction was provided when the API coal indices were developed and derivative trading was embraced to include financial institutions, trading houses and hedge funds. The liquidity of coal trades increased rapidly and vastly and market information became obtainable on a daily basis. Interpretation of current and future coal prices became available to all market players and contributed to the sophistication of the market that is now able to participate in risk management of prices, capital expenditure and brownfield developments.

The PPRust North project is an expansion of existing operations on the ?Platreef? orebody in the Limpopo Province of South Africa. Anglo Platinum has been mining and processing the Platreef since 1993 at the adjacent Sandsloot and Zwartfontein South open pits at a current rate of approximately 4.5 million tons per annum. This paper describes the origin of the proposed process flow sheet. A comprehensive test work programme has been conducted evaluating the best process flow sheet for the very hard and variable ore in the proposed mining area. The selection of the comminution circuit is discussed where conventional crushing and SABC options were analysed based on both extensive test work and analyses of current operational data at the existing concentrator. The application of the high pressure grinding roll technology has significant advantages?it replaces the 3rd and 4th stage crushing stages in a conventional circuit. This programme has been conducted over several years and has involved work done at site at pilot scale, internally at the company?s research facilities and externally at various sites. The on-site pilot work was completed over a 7-month period at the existing concentrator facility using a ThyssenKrupp-Polysius, ?Polycom?, 950 mm by 350 mm, high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) machine. In excess of 185 000 tons of ore was processed through the unit during the trial period. This paper describes the test work programme and particularly the proposed application of high pressure grinding technology and its potential for further application in the platinum industry.

The reasons for constructing a model of an orebody for which both the parent population and the sampling distribution are known are discussed and details of the model are given. A brief summary of Matheron&apos;s theory of regionalized variables is included, with particular reference to his kriging estimators and their variances. Using the model, a comparison is then made between these kriging estimators and other commonly-used estimators. These are compared to find the one with the minimum variance, and an analysis is included to investigate whether any of the estimators is biased. Also included is a comparison between theoretical and experimental variances for some of the estimators.

In late 1997 a request was received to assist with determining the powered support unit (shield) load capacities for the planned 2 seam short wall. This project had a number of aspects which made it attractive to utilize numerical modelling in conjunction with other more conventional design tools in the design of the shields. Amongst these were: The 2 seam panels were to be laid out about 25 m below the previously short walled 4 seam, the 4 seam had in turn been over-mined by the 5 seam long wall, the proposed face height of the 2 seam short wall was 5.5 m while the 4 seam had been mined at 4 m. The top seam in the area (5 seam) had been mined at between 1.5 and 2.2 m high, the face conditions with about 95 m of broken material applying dead weight loading to the 2 to 4 seam inter-burden septum were hard to predict and cyclical loading due to the presence of strong sandstone bands in the 2 to 4 seam inter-burden. The basic thrust of the study was to take the known, and successful, situation (4 seam short wall) and carry out comparative modelling to enable prediction of likely 2 seam conditions. Some two dimensional aspects studied were: 5 m goaf hanging up behind shields, stresses in beams to determine likely first goaf roof span, stresses in cantilever beams to asses cyclical loading due to sandstone bands in the interburden being loaded by the overlying goaf and stresses on chain and crush pillars adjacent to the goaf edge. Three dimensional aspects that were investigated included: Load distribution along face for close goafing and 5 m goaf hang-up and load in a 1 m wide rib modelled in the position of the powered support units. From the modelling it was possible to determine the optimal shield leg capacity of the new 2 seam equipment. These outputs were used when drawing up the technical specifications for manufacture of the new equipment. The face was successfully commissioned in August 2002. Certains aspects de ce projet le rendaient intéressant pour utiliser la modélisation numérique en même temps que d’autres méthodes conventionnelles pour la conception des boucliers. Parmi ces aspects se trouvaient : Les panneaux de la couche 2 devaient être placés environ 25 m au dessous de la couche 4 courte taille ; la couche 4 avait été remplacée par la couche 5 longue taille ; la hauteur de taille proposée pour la couche 2 courte taille était 5.5 m, tandis que la couche 4 avait été exploitée à 4 m. La couche supérieure de la région (couche 5) avait été exploitée entre 1.5 et 2.2 m de hauteur ; il était difficile de prédire les conditions de taille, avec environ 95m de matériaux cassés ajoutant une charge morte à la plaque de séparation entre les couches 2 et 4 et un chargement cyclique causé par des bandes de grès dans l’entre-fardeau 2-4. L’idée principale de l’étude fut de prendre la situation connue et réussie (couche 4 courte taille) et de faire une modélisation comparative pour prédire les conditions probables de la couche 2. Certains des aspects à double dimension qui furent étudiés étaient : Un accrochage de remblai de 5m derrière les boucliers ; contraintes dans les poutres pour déterminer le premier intervalle probable entre remblai et toit ; contraintes dans les poutres en porte-à-faux pour évaluer le chargement cyclique causé par les bandes de grès dans l’entre-fardeau qui est accablé par le remblai et les contraintes sur les piliers par chaîne et d’écrasement adjacents au bord du remblai. Aspects à trois dimensions qui furent étudiés : Distribution de la charge le long de la taille pour les remblais proches et l’accrochage de remblai de 5 m et la charge dans une nervure de 1 m de large modelée dans la position des unités de soutènement mécanisées. La modélisation a permis de déterminer la capacité de portée optimale du bouclier du dispositif nouveau pour la couche 2. Ces résultats furent utilisés pour dresser les spécifications techniques pour la fabrication de l’équipement nouveau. La taille fut commissionnée avec succès en août

"The objective of the study was to determine the type and distribution of rare earth elements (REEs) in the phosphate flotation concentrate from the Esfordi flotation plant in central Iran, in order to understand their leaching behaviour. Samples of the concentrate were prepared and analysed using XRF, XRD, ICP, and EMPA. The Ce, Nd, La, and Y contents were 5608, 2227, 1959, and 679.7 mg/kg, respectively. The main REEbearing minerals in the concentrate are fluorapatite, monazite, and xenotime. Apatite is the chief mineral of the concentrate and the ratio of apatite to monazite is greater than 60. From EMPA analysis, monazite contains a much higher proportion of REEs than apatite, but more than 50% of the REE content of the concentrate is in apatite, as this is the main mineral constituent of the concentrate. During the leaching of REEs in the phosphoric acid production process, more than 99% of the total rare earth values report to the large amounts of phosphogypsum (CaSO4·2H2O) formed during the dissolution reaction. Accordingly, two process options are suggested for treating the Esfordi concentrate. In the first option, the concentrate is treated with 98% H2SO4 at 200–300°C. After digestion and water leaching, phosphorus and REEs are precipitated out of solution. In the second option, the concentrate is treated in a pre-leach stage. The process residue from the pre-leach stage is then subjected to acid digestion at elevated temperature for phosphoric acid production.IntroductionThe rare earth elements (REEs) comprise a set of 17 chemical elements in the periodic table, specifically the 15 lanthanides plus scandium and yttrium. REEs and alloys that contain them are used in devices such as computer memory, rechargeable batteries, cell phones, catalytic converters, magnets, fluorescent lighting, and many more (Krishnamurthy and Gupta, 2004). China supplies about 94% of the REE demand, with the remaining 6% coming from Russia and Estonia, the USA, India, Malaysia, and Brazil (Zhanheng, 2011). Increased industrial development in China has prompted the Chinese government to limit annual export quotas to approximately 35 kt of rare earth oxides (REOs), while non-Chinese annual demand is expected to reach 80 kt by the year 2015. This constriction of supply is being met by the development of many new rare earth mining projects, each of which has its own unique mining and processing challenges (Jordens, Cheng, and Waters, 2013). One of these projects is the Esfordi phosphate project, which is located in Yazd Province in central Iran. The concentrate from the Esfordi flotation plant contains 1.2–1.5% REEs."
