Discussion J. de V. Lambrechts (Fellow): The author's paper is a brilliant follow-up of an earlier paper by Starfield and Dickson.1 I have no quarrel with Dr Starfield's computerization of a complex problem, but I do not believe that he is getting quite the right answers from his programme. My impression is that his predictions about wet bulb temperature increases in very deep mines are over optimistic; in other words, that it will be hotter than Dr Starfield predicts. This is putting my views in a nutshell. This is not the occasion on which to indulge in lengthy argument about the original paper by Starfield and Dickson, but the present paper is, after all, based directly on that earlier paper and if the one fails, the other cannot succeed. I did level certain criticisms at the first paper and cannot say that the authors' replies were very convincing. I do not think it is a sin to admit that I belong to the old school which believes in thorough field experimentation and practical trials and no amount of mathematical manipulation or physical theorizing, no matter how excellent, can make up for inadequate practical confirmation. This, as I see it, is still the crux of the matter. The original paper by Starfield and Dickson still rests on somewhat scanty practical evidence and I would be much happier if Dr Starfield's computer programme, based on the Starfield-Dickson model, had been checked against a large mass of observations in the practical mining situation. This is what both Wiles2 and myself3 had tried to do previously. What we lacked in mathematics and/or computer aids, I think the present paper by Dr Starfield lacks in practical substantiation. This is no condemnation of the author's paper which, taken by itself, is excellent but I think the final stage is still lacking, namely the bringing together of theory and empiricism in a manner acceptable to all. This may be wishful thinking on my part but I hope, within the next year or so, to come up with a modified Starfield-Dickson model in such a way that the computer answers will agree in the majority of cases with the few hundred field observations which are already on record. Hemp (Visitor): Dr Starfield's paper has very effectively rounded off one particular aspect of the general problem of heat flow in mines. The ease with which this computer programme can be used to calculate temperature increases in horizontal airways must lead to its wider use in ventilation planning and, in developing this rapid method, Dr Starfield has indeed rendered a valuable service to the mining industry. One could consider further instances of heat flow in airways in which the availability of a rapid computer method would be desirable, e.g. the flow of air down a shaft, where there is an increase in temperature due to adiabatic compression, as well as an increase in virgin rock temperature as the depth increases. However, this particular case would not present any new problems and would merely require an extension of the exisitng work. I should like in this contribution to talk about an aspect of environmental control in mines which, I think, will become more important in the future. It is well known that wet bulb temperatures are subject to fluctuations underground. In some instances, particularly in stopes, the fluctuations, both with time and position, can be considerable. The theoretical work which has been carried out on temperature increases has been aimed at the prediction of mean temperatures, and no account has been taken of fluctuations around this mean. It is questionable whether this approach will, on its own, be sufficient, particularly when temperature increases in stopes are considered. The fluctuations in air temperatures underground arise from two causes. The first of these would be the fluctuations in surface conditions, and here one could list random, diurnal and seasonal fluctuations. The second cause is the multitude of things which vary in a mine and here one could list variations in air flow quantity, sources of evaporation, heat transfer from pump and compressed air columns and, particularly in the stope, variations in air flow patterns. Fluctuations arising from surface temperature variations should be amenable to calculation, and here one envisages figures relating the decay of temperature variation with distance to factors such as air flow quantity. Fluctuations resulting from changes in the mine are perhaps more difficult to tackle theoretically and the best approach could well be to analyse underground observations. In this connection, there is a good case to be made for the increased use of statistical methods in the analysis of underground temperature measurements, and it might be of value to look at current air-conditioning practice. Mixed integer programming (MIP) has been used for optimizing production schedules of mines since the 1960s and is recognized a shaving significant potential for optimizing production scheduling problems for both surface and underground mining. The major problem in long-term production scheduling for underground orebodies generally relate to the large number of variables needed to formulate a MIP model, which makes it too complex to solve. As the number of variables in the model increase, solution times are known to increase at an exponential rate. In many instances the more extensive use of MIP models has been limited due to excessive solution times.

As new legislation drives metallurgical plants to lower SO2 emissions, plant managers face the challenge of keeping their costs under control. The Cansolv® SO2 Scrubbing System has been broadly adopted in the non-ferrous industry as a cost-effective solution for smelter operators to meet the new SO2 emissions targets. The Cansolv® SO2 Scrubbing System is an a mine-based regenerable process that selectively absorbs SO2 from a variety of gases, including dilute smelter gases, such as furnace and converter gases. The system produces a pure, water-saturated SO2 by-product stream, which can then be directed to the front end of a sulphuric acid plant for conversion to sulphuric acid. When deployed in a smelter complex, the Cansolv® SO2 Scrubbing System may also be used to process acid plant tail gas, allowing single absorption sulphuric acid plants to achieve emissions an order of magnitude lower than that of a double absorption acid plant with a lower capital investment. Depending on inlet gas temperature, SO2 emissions in the treated gas can be controlled to as low as 55mg/Nm3. This paper will describe some of the applications where customers have or are planning to use the Cansolv® SO2 Scrubbing System, as well as which features and cost advantages for the treatment of smelter gases were important in the technology choice.

Trends in PGM demand?The conference paper will cover a concise analysis of demand trends, which will include the major PGM end-use sectors (autocatalysis, jewellery, glass, petroleum, nitric acid, medical/dental) and will touch on the investment sector. Reference will be made to environmental legislation affecting global emission standards, trends in PGM loadings and the substitutability of platinum and palladium in this end-use sector. Observations will also be made on the jewellery sector, and the development of Chinese and Japanese demand. Trends in primary and secondary PGM supply?Similarly the paper will summarize historic and current global mine supply and primary production trends for PGMs, referencing recent expansions, their deliverability, and other projects coming on line. Consideration will be given to the grade and geology of PGMs worldwide and metallurgical developments. PGMs produced as by-products of base metal production and early PGM recycling estimates will also be appraised. In order to gain a wide-ranging appreciation of the industry?s long-term cost trends of producing virgin PGM metals, the paper will look at the cost and profit dynamics of global production on a regional basis (Western Bushveld, Eastern Bushveld, Northern Bushveld, Zimbabwe, USA, Canada and Russia). Extrapolating tomorrow?s PGM market and forecasting metal prices?Based on established industry trends and market practices Stephen Forrest will conclude by unveiling a variety of thought-provoking extrapolations of today?s and tomorrows platinum, palladium and rhodium markets to conference delegates. A dual rate kinetic model consisting of differential equations is used to describe the kinetics of the adsorption of gold cyanide on activated carbon. The partial differential equation describing the material balance in the liquid phase is written for the special case of a fixed bed system. It is shown that an isotherm for the case of a closed system is required to yield accurate simulations of the equilibrium in a column of activated carbon. Whereas the equilibrium loading of gold cyanide is influenced by the free access of oxygen to the system, the traditional open batch stirred tank experiments, which are used to estimate parameters for the calculation of breakthrough curves for organic solutes, cannot be used here. The program solves this model at incremental heights in the column at a specific future point in time. Runge-Kutta and backwards- difference methods are used in the numerical solution. A Von Neumann method is used to show that the solution is stable. Kinetic parameters can be estimated either from batch experiments or from short column runs. In the latter method the column should not be long enough to contain the concentration wavefront for the system of interest. Results obtained from bench scale continuous column experiments were used to verify the computer model. Pure gold solutions as well as real leach liquor were used in both short column and countercurrent moving bed experiments.

The paper presents a basic summary of the approach to hydraulic scale-model tests as may typically be applicable to slurry flow situations. A case study is presented illustrating how hydraulic scale-model tests can be of significant benefit in evaluating the performance of novel or unproven slurry handling equipment. In this case the equipment tested was a fan-shaped expansion piece used to spread the discharge from a launder over the full width of a dewatering screen. The tests showed that the device did indeed distribute the slurry flow both in terms of volume and solids mass, but not perfectly uniformly. Unfortunately the equipment was not taken beyond the model test phase. The scale-model test approach did, however, prove to be very useful as it is considered to have provided a good indication of the expected performance of the full-size unit. Significantly, this was achieved at very low cost compared to the cost of installing the device into the proposed plant and having to later change it out for an alternative or live with the less than optimal performance. The paper illustrates the value that can derive from applying hydraulic scale-model testing techniques to evaluating the performance of new or unusual slurry handling equipment. There is particular value in situations that do not lend themselves to numerical modelling.

this paper describes an innovation in computer software that permits mining professionals to collaborate on exploration and mining projects regardless of geographic location. Growth of mining companies through merger and acquisition has created a greater need for mining professionals to collaborate, especially as projects and project participants are becoming geographically remote. Surpac NetVision, the name given to this new collaboration technology, satisfies this need by deploying interactive 3D graphics sessions across computer networks. It achieves this by using common web browser technology as the deployment medium. A plug-in architecture that supports diverse file formats permits transparent read and write of foreign data to further enhance the collaboration process. Surpac NetVision supports any number of connections from web browsers on remote computers using existing networks. Software components required to enable the collaboration session are deployed to the remote computer as required and cached for future sessions. The collaboration session at each computer is characterized by a fully functional replica of the user interface for Surpac NetVision from which any function can be executed by any client, at the owners discretion. All geometry and display attributes deployed to remote clients to render 3Dgraphics are highly compressed to reduce bandwidth requirements. During the exploration phase of mine development, drilling location is in the hands of the geologist, and drilling is spread over the entire domain of the property or deposit boundary. During the mine planning and production phases, however, the mining engineer also needs to use the information obtained from the drilling program. Thus it is important that he/she have some input into the selection of the drillhole locations. Usually, when exploitation will center on one portion of the property for the immediate future, the mine engineer will want to have more of the drilling performed in this area. In the early stages, the purpose of the drilling was to make a decision concerning whether or not to develop a mine. Once the decision is made to proceed with this development, the mine engineer needs to know, with as much confidence as possible, the estimate of the ore grade at each location where mining will occur. This paper addresses the problem of drillhole location for the needs of the mining engineer. The goal is to compare a variety of approaches to drillhole location with a new approach developed by the author. This approach is based on the theory of geostatistics, with the estimation variance used as the quantitative measure of the confidence attained. The goal of the algorithm is to select those locations that minimize the estimation variance subject to constraints on the number of drillholes and the total cost of the drilling program. The kriging equations are used as another set of constraints. The resulting nonlinear optimization model is expressed in terms of binary (0 - 1) decision variables leading to a solution by the branch-and-bound procedure. The algorithm has been applied at a number of operating properties, and practical results and suggestions for implementation are provided.

The role of hardenability in the development of high-strength low-alloy (HSLA) steels is discussed. The applicability of the superhardenability treatment. a steel making technique for increased hardenability, to HSLA steels is indicated, and the literature on this treatment is reviewed. Several low-carbon superhardenability HSLA steels were designed by use of published superhardenability multiplying factors. It was found that the hardenability of these low-carbon steels can be increased to the same extent as that of medium-carbon steels. The mechanical properties as determined in normalized bars indicate that the superhardenability treatment can be used successfully in the production of low-carbon hot-rolled HSLA steels.

The skills differential between manpower supply and demand is due to deeply rooted socio- and politico-educational misconceptions that can be remedied only by a concerted cooperative effort on the part of the general public, the State, organized industry, organized engineering, and engineering education. This will require the general public to recognize that the reasons for the shortages in engineering manpower should be regarded as critical. Public perceptions of engineering, of the vocational and educational prospects in engineering, and of the skills required are poor. The spectrum of engineering vocations, the corresponding function profiles, the interaction between the vocations and the relative proportions of the vocations in the engineering team are in general not adequately appreciated. The recruitment and training of students and teaching staff, teaching facilities, educational curricula, practical training, qualifications, professional registration, and financing are aspects of engineering education that should be brought to the attention of all concerned. . In addition, the educational curricula for the various vocations need to be specified clearly and definitively if the overall mission of engineering education is to be properly appreciated. The uncertainties between university and technikon education and the pursuant vocations need to be resolved. This can be done only by defining the respective curricula in terms of the mental skills and scientific techniques required. The remedial actions with regard to the rationalization of engineering education comprise informing of the public; establishment of an active political lobby; revision of existing education policy; rationalization of existing educational infrastructure; promotion, development, and guidance of engineering student intake; financing of engineering education; accelerated creation of new employment opportunities; and monitoring of the supply and demand of high-level manpower. The parties required to nitiate these remedial actions are various State departments and corporations involved in engineering and industry, various departments of education, the Directorate of Technology of the Department of Trade and Industry, organized engineering education, organized engineering, organized industry, and the Human Sciences Research Council. Only if these interest groups actively initiate the various actions under the coordinated guidance of organized engineering wil the required results be achieved. The South African Engineering Association has proposed a comprehensive programme as strategy to solving the problem, and has obtained broad consensus from various State departments, organized engineering education and research, and the private sector. A joint venture between the Foundation for Research Development, the South African Engineering Association, and organized industry has been charged by the State President with the task of launching the programme.

Prof D. D. Howat (Member): I am a man with a grievance this afternoon. The other authors of the paper entered into a conspiracy to ensure that I presented the paper, and finally even had the audacity to say that this was the least that could be expected from me as I had done so little of the other work. Looking at the distinguished audience here that includes some figures who have forgotten more about cement that some of us have ever learned, I realise how right the other authors were. I feel very much cast in the role of the fool who was pushed in where angels fear to tread. I hesitate to say, Sir, that I would not use the word angels in any definition of the authors of this paper. In presenting the paper, may I try to put forward a few simple points about cement that are probably as little known to the majority of the audience as they were to me-at least until very recently. Concrete, made by mixing Portland cement, sand, crushed rock and water is the most widely used constructional material in the world. Generally the production of actual Portland Cement is about two-thirds that of steel and by the time this is formed into concrete the total is about five times the world tonnage of steel produced. A very rough approximation suggests that world consumption of concrete is about one ton per person per annum. Apart from fresh water mankind consumes no other material in such quantities. What mankind originally required was a mortar to be used for joining blocks of stone or bricks. Such mortar was originally made from limestone burned in a kiln and then mixed with water. Production of mortar of this type began over 5,000 years ago. Some samples from pyramids in Egypt have shown this mortar to be in good condition although over 4,500 years old. The progress of technological development was very slow until 1824 when an English bricklayer, Joseph Aspidin, patented a new mortar material which he made by burning limestone and clay together in his kitchen stove. Aspdin called his product 'Portland Cement' because, in colour, it resembled a well-known building stone quarried in the Isle of Portland on the south coast of England. Aspid's same types of raw materials are used today in modern cement production and the product is still referred to as Portland cement. A lime-containing material such as chalk or shell and a clay-type material such as shale, slate or clay itself, are mixed in the required proportions, ground and fed to a kiln where the minimum burning temperature is about 1,500°C. The raw materials react to form hard chunks of a material known as 'clinker'. About 5 per cent of gypsum is added to the clinker and the mixture is then ground to a very fine powder, the function of the gypsum being to control the rate of setting of the concrete. The key oxides in cement production are lime, silica, alumina and iron oxide. The possible reactions occurring during and the products of the burning process are shown in Table I.

"Brick manufacturers supply a variety of uniquely coloured facebricks to the building industry, which requires a high level of colour consistency in the products. Colour variation in bricks is influenced by the composition and consistency of the white clay raw material. By blending varieties of naturally occurring white clay the manufacturers produce a unique range of facebrick products. Homogeneity of the white clay raw materials mined at Lenasia is crucial for producing bricks of consistent colour. Geostatistical investigations of the major element distributions (SiO2, Al2O3, Fe2O3, and K2O) and loss on ignition (LoI) were conducted. An analysis of the spatial continuity of these variables followed by ordinary kriging indicated that the upper white clay layer at Lenasia is richer in K2O and Fe2O3 than the lower layer. Consistency in the colour of facebricks depends critically on careful management of the variability in the K2O and Fe2O3 content of the clays. The geostatistical approach to understanding the distribution of elements in the clay allows miners to construct clay stockpiles of consistent quality for feeding the brick-making process. Geostatistical investigation of the chemical contents in other clay domains within the deposit is recommended, and could be extended to all facebrick manufacturers to assist in improving the colour consistency of their products. IntroductionMost clay in South Africa is used in the manufacturing of tiles, pipes, bricks, whiteware, refractories, and pottery. Bricks are manufactured from a wide variety of clay types, the behaviour of which during firing depends critically on the the clay mineralogy and chemical composition, but this relationship not well understood (Stein, 1982). The variety among clay deposits is related to the different processes of formation (Deer, Howie, and Zussman, 1992). The geochemical composition of the clay can vary between layers and within the same layer in an individual deposit (Lurie, 1984). The properties of clay minerals are determined by their structures and the different combinations of silicate layers, cations, and hydroxyl ions (Kingery, Bowen, and Uhlmann, 1976). South African clays can be classified as either kaolinite or montmorillonite and are seldom found in a pure form (Lurie, 1984). Different clay minerals affect the drying, forming, firing behaviour, colour, and quality of the brick product in different ways. The National Institute for Metallurgy - usually referred to as NIM - has become the Council for Mineral Technology, or Mintek. The Honourable F. W. de Klerk, Minister of Mineral and Energy Affairs, announced the change of name at the official opening of the main entrance to Mintek's premises on 30th October, 1981. Awards for bravery Two men who disregarded the dangers of fiercely burning timber and falling rocks to douse an underground fire, using their hard hats to scoop water from a drain, received the Chamber of Mines Award for bravery at a ceremony held at West Driefontein Gold Mine near the end of October.
