It is a great privilege for me to have been asked to present the closing address to this most successful symposium on backfill in the South African mining industry. When I accepted this invitation I did not fully appreciate the tremendous progress made on most aspects of backfilling in the last few years. The number and quality of papers presented at this symposium bear testimony to the mining industry's determination and success in introducing backfill in underground mines to improve strata control and environmental conditions, and to provide better protection to mineworkers against the hazards of rockbursts and rockfalls. Many contributions demonstrated that these benefits can be achieved at a reasonable cost, and in some instances improved grade and higher rate of face advance result in improved economics. In my closing address I will attempt to summarize the progress made in the various aspects of backfilling underground workings and to identify those areas which, in my opinion, require further attention and effort. I will undertake this review under the following main headings: ? fundamentals of backfilling; ? design of backfill systems; ? operation of backfill systems; ? control of backfill systems; and other aspects of backfill systems.

Diamonds are mined from ancient raised beach deposits in southern Namibia where complex geological controls have resulted in patchy diamond distribution, largely related to irregularities (trapsites) in the bedrock. The distribution of the number of diamonds per sample is a discrete, reverse- J shape distribution which can be characterized by two parameters. These parameters have been transformed into a Beta and Theta Contribution which can be interpreted as reflecting the 'quantity' and 'quality' of the trapsites. The relationship of statistical parameters, obtained during the sampling of an ore deposit, to the geology of the deposit is an important element of ore reserve estimation. The large-scale regional trends in the contributions have been explained in terms of the geology.

This paper briefly describes a computerised model of the South African electricity system which has been developed jointly by the Atomic Energy Board and the Electricity Supply Commission. The results of an analysis of this system have been subjected to a fairly extensive sensitivity analysis which reveals that up to the year 1990 between 680 and 700 million tons of coal will be required for electric power generation, together with between 7 000 and 10 000 tons of uranium. This result is fairly insensitive to data variations, but the prediction of a cumulative requirement up to the year 2000, of between 1 300 and 1 800 million tons of coal and 25 000 to 70 000 tons of uranium, proves to be very data-sensitive.

Some basic considerations in the application of geostatistics to the valuation of ore in South African gold mines by D. G. KRIGE, Pr. Eng., D.Se. (Eng.) Rand (Fellow) There is much room for improvement in the statistical procedures that have been used by gold mines over the past decade in the valuation of their ore reserves. Improvement depends on the establishment of the extent to which the patterns of frequency distributions and the directional variograms for the gold values vary from area to area within each section of a mine. The application of the lognormal distribution and of the De Wijsian variogram model for routine ore-reserve valuations requires detailed study before some of the reservations still held by mathematical statisticians can be met. This paper provides some preliminary evidence of the extent to which these models can be used with confidence, as well as suggesting how they can be applied to their full potential.

Metal inventories are usually reported in financial statements of mining companies. However, the value of these inventories can be reliable only if the metals in stock are measured within acceptable tolerances. Reliable metal balancing requires accurate mass measurement, sampling, and chemical analysis. Many mining companies are usually unable to validate the accuracy of metals in inventories at the end of their financial year. This is mainly due to poor mass measurement, sampling, and chemical analysis practices. This has an adverse impact on metallurgical accounting and metal valuation. In addition, it puts a lot of stress on external auditors, who have the duty to recommend the approval of the financial statements to the board of directors. Although a full value chain of metal reconciliation includes the accuracy of Mineral Reserve definition and grade control at the mine, this paper discusses the implementation of best practices for mass measurement, sampling, and chemical analysis at processing plants. This is an important aspect of sampling and reconciliation that is required in order to improve the reporting of inventories in the financial statements of public mining companies. Wet high-intensity magnetic separation (WHIMS) for the concentration of gold and uranium was tested on many Witwatersrand cyanidation residues, and on some ores and flotation tailings. The results varied, but many indicated recoveries of over 60 per cent of the gold and uranium. The main source of loss is the inefficiency of WHIMS for material of smaller particle size than 20fLm. The recoveries in the continuous tests were lower than those in the batch tests. The continuous tests indicated an operational difficulty that could be experienced in practice, namely the tendency for wood chips and ferromagnetic particles to block the matrix of the separator. It was decided that a solution to the problem lies in the modification of the separator to allow continuous removal of the matrix for cleaning. A system has been developed for this purpose and is being demonstrated on a pilot-plant scale. Promising results were obtained in tests on a process that combines a coarse grind, gravity concentration, and WHIMS. In the gravity-concentration step, considerable recoveries, generally over SO per cent, of high-grade pyrite. were obtained, together with high recoveries of gold and moderate, but possibly important, recoveries of uranium. A simple model describing the operation of the WHIMS machine in terms of the operating parameters is described. This should reduce the amount of empirical test work required for the optimization of operating conditions and should provide a basis for scale-up calculations. The economics of the WHIMS process is discussed.

Resistivity tests indicated that, at temperatures lower than 1450°C, reducing agents alone, as well as burdens consisting of high-carbon ferrochromium and reducing agents, exhibit wide differences in resistivity. These differences are less pronounced at elevated temperatures. The resistivity of a reducing agent and the volume fraction it occupies are important factors controlling the resistivity of burdens of high-carbon ferrochromium. A mathematical model is formulated to describe the dependence of the resistivity of mixtures of conducting and insulating particles on the particle sizes and the volume fraction occupied by the conducting phase. The resistivity of burdens of high-carbon ferrochromium is high if the particle size of the reducing agent is larger than that of the other components of the burden. A number of reducing agents showed small variations in their reactivity towards chromite ore in the solid state. However, with chromite ore in the liquid state, reduction proceeded more rapidly with reducing agents occupying larger volume fractions. During the smelting of manganese ore, high initial rates of reduction were observed for reducing agents that had a high reactivity towards carbon dioxide and a high content of volatile matter, and that occupied a large volume fraction. High liq'uid-state reactivities were observed for reducing agents occupying a large volume fraction and having a Iow degree of graphitization.

After the presentation of the paper the President said: "The paper which Mr Lee introduced this afternoon was a short one but was nonetheless important in that it described a new tool for use in flotation test work. Those of us who have experienced the frustration of trying to solve flotation problems by trial and error methods know what this means. I well remember 25 years ago at T.G.M.E. trying to improve the recovery from the flotation plant there by trying various combinations of reagents and then having to wait a couple of days for the assay office to give results. Even then, on the small scale laboratory tests which had to precede full scale tests one could never be sure that the results obtained were reproducible on the full scale. Here it seems we have a relatively simple apparatus which can measure instantly the effectiveness of various reagents under different concentrations and pH values, etc. It is most important, I believe, that developments of this kind be reported in our journal for the benefit of all involved in such work, not only so that we know about it but also in order to provoke constructive discussion which might lead to further developments. A new Scramble has hit the African continent. This Scramble has many drivers: the 1978 Deng Xiao Ping liberalizations in China; the 1989 collapse of the Soviet empire; the ICT revolution; the ease of global communications. The underlying dynamic is the end of the bipolar world of the Cold War and its replacement with multipolarity. According to HSBC (2011), in 2050 China will be the world?s largest economy, with India number 3 and Brazil number 7. Russia will be 15th (below its old rival, Turkey). South Africa maybe ranked 30th, yet has been invited to join the exclusive (BRIC) club. One has to ask, why? It is sad to note how low South Africa is assessed to be?currently it is around number 24 in the world; the reason for the fall is that the HSBC model includes population growth, and it is in this domain that South Africa is a loser, being constrained by the impact of HIV/AIDS on its life expectancy. The original four BRIC nations include the factory of the world (China), the garden of the world (Brazil), the gas station of the world (Russia), and the back office of the world (India). South Africa comes to the club both as jeweller of the world and as gatekeeper. China, Brazil, and Russia all have considerable expertise in mining exploration, extraction, and processing.

A fuel cell is an electrochemical engine that converts the chemical energy of a fuel, such as hydrogen, and an oxidant, such as oxygen, directly into electricity. The emerging fuel cell industry may represent a major opportunity for the global platinum mining industry. This is because low temperature fuel cell systems use platinum group metals as catalysts. Fuel cell vehicles may become the most important driver of future platinum demand within years of their commercialization. A great number of factors impact on and drive the diffusion of fuel cell vehicle innovation. Such drivers range from energy security to environmental concerns and the technological development of fuel cells and systems. Such factors and drivers of fuel cell vehicle diffusion are combined with the generic ?body of knowledge? on ?technology forecasting? and ?diffusion of innovation? to design a framework that provides a holistic approach to the analysis of this complex enterprise. An attempt is made in this paper to address the following questions: Which types of fuel cells require platinum group metals? Which types of fuel cells will achieve dominant design status? Will fuel cell vehicles diffuse successfully? How big will the impact of successful fuel cell vehicle diffusion be on future platinum demand? How well do fuel cell vehicles compete with incumbent technologies such as spark-ignited and compression-ignited internal combustion engine-driven vehicles? How soon will oil depletion start to drive the diffusion of fuel cell vehicles? How important is hydrogen as a fuel? What impact does the inadequate hydrogen fuelling infrastructure have on fuel cell vehicle diffusion? The paper contains some initial results of a research project that has the aim of producing a schedule of future platinum demand generated from fuel cell vehicles. This paper is concerned with heat flow in the plane of a typical cross-section of a deep underground airway. A new algorithm, called the quasi-steady method, is presented for the calculation of rock temperatures in that plane. The algorithm is used in the computation of heat and moisture transfer rates from the rock to the ventilating air for an airway that is wet on part of its circumference and dry elsewhere. The speed and accuracy of the new method are demonstrated on a microcomputer, and it is argued that this method offers a considerably more versatile and physically meaningful alternative to previous methods for the prediction of increases in air temperature along mine airways. The algorithm is also used to explore the concept of a uniformly wet airway that is equivalent to a partly wet airway in terms of its effect on the ventilating air. The concept is shown to be reasonable, but more complex than one might have anticipated. Finally, several useful extensions and applications of the new method are suggested.

The history of development of analytical techniques for the determination of elastic behaviour around tabular excavations, is examined briefly. The design of a completely digital system, which appears to afford considerable improvements in speed, accuracy and versatility compared with existing analogue methods, is described in detail. The practical application of this system is illustrated by means of an actual underground problem. The results are presented, not in the form of specific solutions to the mine's problems, but as indications of the versatility and scope of the new method.

An extension of lognormal theory and its application to risk analysis models for new mining ventures by B. M. WAINSTEIN*, B.Sc., M.B.A. (Witwatersrand) (Visitor) The lognormal distribution, which remains the most popular distribution model for ore values, is investigated. The T-distribution, an integral part of this theory, is dependent on the sample size, n, and the unknown population parameter, o2, which cannot be integrated out. Hence, o2constitutes a nuisance parameter. In this study, the robustness of the T-distribution to changes in o2 is examined. It is found that the T-distribution is robust for 0,1 <= o2 >= 2,5, a domain covering most practical applications of the lognormal theory. By the use of o2 = 0,7, multiplier factors, which facilitate the computation of the confidence limits, are derived for a comprehensive set of confidence levels.

This paper presents the results of a project for developing a methodology for empirically determining some of the mechanical properties of the rock mass at the Äspö Hard Rock Laboratory, Southern Sweden. Using the equations available in the literature, the deformation modulus, friction angle, cohesion and unconfined compressive strength of the rock mass were estimated. A comparison of the results using different classification methods (Q, RMR, GSI, RMi, Ramamurthy’s) was made to estimate the range of variations in the mechanical properties with the considerations of: i) the quality/quantity of the geological data; ii) the technique for partitioning of the rock mass into homogeneous domains; iii) the sensitivity and subjectivity of the empirical methods; and iv) the need for validating the empirical methods against a test case. Cet article présente les résultats d’un projet visant à établir une méthodologie, pour déterminer, de façon empirique, les propriétés mécaniques de la masse rocheuse. En utilisant les corrélations disponibles dans la littérature, quelques-unes des propriétés de la masse rocheuse ont pu être déterminées (module de déformation, angle de friction, cohésion, force de compression illimitée). Une comparaison des résultats obtenus par différentes méthodes (Q, RMR, GSI, RMi, de Ramamurthy) a permis d’établir une échelle de variations des propriétés mécaniques et de formuler une série de recommandations concernant : i) la qualité/quantité des données géologiques ; ii) la technique de partition de la masse rocheuse dans des domaines homogènes ; iii) la sensibilité et la subjectivité des méthodes empiriques ; iv) la nécessité de valider les méthodes empiriques à l’aide de nouvelles études de cas. Dieses Paper präsentiert die Ergebnisse eines Projekts mit dem Ziel, eine Methodik für die empirische Festhellung von mechanischen Eigenschaften im Gesteinmassiv zu etablieren. Durch Verwendung der in der Literatur zugänglichen Korrelationen, wurden einige Eigenschaften des Gesteinmassivs festgestellt (Entstellungsmodul, Reibungswinkel, Kohäsion, unbeschränkte Kompressionsstärke). Ein Vergleich der Ergebnisse unterschiedlicher Methoden (Q, RMR, GSI, RMi, Ramamurthy’s) wurde durchgeführt und dies erlaubte die Feststellung der Variationsskala von den mechanischen Eigenschaften, sowie eine Reihe Empfehlungen für: i) Qualität/Quantität der geologischen Dateien; ii) die Technik für Teilung des Gesteinmassivs in homogene Domäne; iii)die Empfindlichkeit und Subjektivität der empirischen Methoden; iv) das Bedarf die empirische Methoden gegen neue Fallgeschichten zu validieren.

A method is described for the determination of cyanide in gold slurries, based on amperometry. The measured current is proportional to the concentration of cyanide, and is not effected by pH or by the concentration of oxygen in solution. It is also unaffected by other ions that may be present in gold-leaching solutions, including sulphide, thiocyanate, and thiosulphate. The current depends on the temperature, and an activation energy of 17,9 kJ/mol was determined Since the current is controlled by the mass transfer of cyanide to the anode, it depends on the conditions of agitation. In tests on an operational gold plant, slurry was pumped directly from the top of the leaching tank, through the measuring cell and back into the tank. The results indicate that the instrument is a promising alternative to the instruments currently available. The readings from the instrument remained in calibration for at least two days, showing that the instrument would need to be re-calibrated by the operating staff at regular periods.

Discussion: A. Hazell (Associate Member) and T. J. Kotze (Graduate Member): The authors must be congratulated on the development of a versatile computer programme for determining the stresses and displacements resulting from mining operations. As a design tool it will no doubt take its rightful place together with the analogue computer. Union Corporation made use of this digital computer programme whilst still in its development stage to determine the stress distributions which were causing the unexpected failure of the Marievale sub-incline shaft. Two features arising from this investigation may be of interest to members, namely: A. The solution to the problem of stabilizing a rectangular inclined shaft, which turned out to be contrary to accepted mining practice, and B. A comparison between the results obtained with the pure digital system and the analogue computer. A. The shaft is nine ft high and 20 ft wide, dipping at 9° to the horizontal and crossing the bedding planes. Fig. 1 is a plan and Fig. 2 is a section of the sub-incline shaft pillar area showing the relative positions of the shaft and reef as well as their respective dips. The deepest point in the shaft is 3 300 ft below surface and the requirement of a stress free ground surface may not be satisfied. It also means that the original gravitational stresses are low. A 900 ft wide pillar was left to protect the bottom section of the shaft, the top section being understoped years ago. Extraction of the pillar was started at the beginning of last year, mining operations being carried out in the accepted manner, starting beneath the shaft and mining outwards. The approach did, however, turn out to be the wrong one, because failure of the shaft was noticed soon afterwards. Even small movements were serious in this case due to the low clearance between the skips and the shaft supports. During October, 1968, failure between benchmarks 8 and 10 (see Fig. 1) became so excessive that hoisting speeds had to be reduced. Failure continued to occur and, by the end of March, 1969, failure had propagated up the shaft as far as benchmark 7, and down as far as benchmark 12. As this shaft had a tight hoisting schedule it was imperative that a quick solution be found to arrest the failure.

When activated carbon is used for the recovery of gold and silver from Witwatersrand gold-plant solutions, severe fouling of the carbon by calcium carbonate is experienced. Also, difficulty is encountered in the retention of the adsorbed silver on the carbon because it is displaced by gold. The acidification of plant pregnant solutions before they are contacted with carbon was therefore investigated as a means of overcoming these shortcomings. The results from batch laboratory experiments on the effect of pH on gold adsorption from plant solutions and from synthetic solutions of high ionic strength indicated reaction rate optima in the region of pH 5 and below pH I. The effect of pH on the equilibrium capacity constant for gold adsorption onto activated carbon was also studied, using both a plant solution and a synthetic solution of high ionic strength. In the case of the plant solution, the results suggested only a marginal change in carbon capacity for gold in the pH range 12 to 6, with significant increases in capacity at lower pH values. In the case of the synthetic solution of high ionic strength, the capacity constant was found to increase steadily as the pH was lowered from 12 to I. It was also found that the gold adsorption capacity of the carbon was significantly better for the synthetic solution. No precipitation of gold from the pregnant solution (gold content approximately 6 g/t) was noted as the pH was decreased to values as low as ,. However, about 25 per cent of the 0,6 g/t silver content was found to have precipitated when a pH value of 3,0 was attained. Further substantial precipitation of silver took place as the pH was lowered further. The investigation was extended by the passing of suitably acidified gold-plant solutions through one or more columns containing activated carbon. Preliminary results showed that the particle size of the carbon had a significant effect on the rate of gold adsorption. No displacement of adsorbed silver by gold was observed to take place at an influent pH of 5. In a typical continuous &apos;merry-go-round&apos; operation involving three columns in which gold was eluted from the lead column every 48 hours, effluent values averaging 0,001 g/t gold could be consistently achieved under simulated plant-operating conditions. The results were obtained at relatively high velocities of influent solution, resulting in very little hold-up of gold in the carbon-recovery circuit. More than 99,9 per cent of the gold and more than 99,8 per cent of the silver was recovered in the adsorption circuit, while the elution data indicated an average elution recovery of 99,8 per cent of the adsorbed gold and 98,2 per cent of the adsorbed silver. Elution of the carbon was carried out at 91 QC. This involved pretreatment of the carbon with a sodium cyanide solution, followed by elution with deionized water. At a loading flowrate of 66 bed volumes per hour, the indicated take-up of metals on the carbon in the lead column was as follows; 53 k g/t gold, 6 k g/t silver, 57 k g/t copper, 14 k g/t nickel, and I k g/t zinc. Only a trace of cobalt was adsorbed. At an elution rate of 1,7 bed volumes per hour, the lead column was found to be completely stripped in under 5 hours, with concentrations of gold in the eluate reaching 6 to 7 g/l. Besides the excellent adsorption and elution results obtained when acidified pregnant solution was used, no fouling of the carbon was indicated, and the pressure drop across the three columns was considered to be well within practical limits. When compared with conventional zinc precipitation, the carbon process would appear to have considerable economic merit, with strong indications that significant savings would be possible both in capital and operating costs. Further pilot-plant experiments, preferably on a gold plant, would be required before a meaningful cost comparison could be made with the existing process.

A maximum of ten process streams (Merrill barren solutions) can be monitored sequentially with this on-line analyser, and gold concentrations as Iow as 0,005 mg/I can be determined. The design is a further development of the Tell-tale analyser constructed by the Corner House Laboratories during the period 1965-69. The barren solution is preconcentrated automatically by solvent extraction, the solvent being a solution of I per cent Aliquat 336 in di-isobutyl ketone. An aqueous-to-solvent ratio of 40: I is maintained. The extracted gold in the organic phase is determined by flame atomic absorption, each analysis taking approximately II minutes. The long-term reproducibility of the absorbance readings over a 24-hour period of repetitive sampling of four simulated process streams varied from 6,9 to 4,1 per cent relative standard deviation for gold concentrations of 0,0 I to 0,05 mg/I.

High-temperature phase relations in the Pb-PbS system were established by the quenching of samples equilibrated in evacuated and sealed silica capsules. The liquid-miscibility gap seen in some previously published phase diagrams was not observed. The thermodynamic activities of PbS in liquid solutions of this system were derived at 1473 K from the isopiestic equilibration of samples belonging to this solution series with Cu2S-PbS melts of known PbS activities. The behaviour of Pb-PbS melts was found to be compatible with a subregular solution model. This model also made it possible to obtain an analytical liquidus for PbS that was in excelent agreement with the experimental determination.
