The hazard of rock bursts and rock falls as experienced in South African gold mines is examined in the light of recent research findings. The problem areas include high fatality rates, losses in production and equipment, and a detrimental influence on the recruitment of labour. The nature of the hazard is analysed, and it is shown that rock bursts are strongly related to the spatial rate of energy release by mining but that rock falls are not. The role of blasting and geological discontinuities is discussed. Practical rock-burst control strategies are compared, including the use of stabilizing pillars, back-filling and, in particular, techniques for reducing the frequency and severity of accidents resulting from large rock bursts. The latest stope-support experiments and their potential implications to mining are consid~red. It is concluded that a better understanding of the rock-burst and rock-fall hazard has resulted from the industry's research efforts. The findings can be applied towards obtaining an improved underground environment for men and machines.

South Africa depends to a considerable measure on the exploitation of mineral reserves and the processing of these minerals. One of the prime requirements for the mining and metallurgical industry to continue in this vital role is access to sufficient energy in a suitable form. Hence, four important questions are discussed: Does South Africa have sufficient energy for the processing of its minerals and metals! Will the cost of energy allow South Africa's minerals and metals to compete on world markets? Can mining and metallurgical processes become more energy-efficiency Can mining and metallurgical processes be adapted to the various forms of energy that may have to be utilized in the future? It is concluded that about 26 per cent of the extractable reserves of coal would be required in the mining and processing of 50 per cent of South Africa's reserves of gold, platinum-group metals, copper, iron, ferrochromium, and ferromanganese. However, the reducing agents required exceed the extractable reserves but not the total estimates of mineable in situ resources of metallurgical coal and anthracitic coal. Even under the severe constraint that coal could become virtually the sole source of energy, only about three-quarters of the extractable reserves of coal would have been consumed by the year 2025. The reasonably assured resources of uranium metal that can be recovered at less than $80 per kilogram are considerable and, at current conversion efficiencies to electricity, are equivalent to one-fifth of the extractable reserves of coal. The rate of exportation of energy in the form of U30. was about five times that of coal in 1978. It is pointed out that the price of energy has a direct effect on the competitiveness of metals, and, although constituting only a small proportion of the selling price of precious metals, it represents a significant proportion of the selling price of copper and metals recovered from oxide ores. The scope for the conservation of energy appears to be greater in the extraction and conversion of primary energy-carriers to electrical energy than in other mining or metallurgical fields. Provided that alternative sources of energy can be converted to electrical energy, they can be applied to the mining and metallurgical industries. The decision as to which type of energy should be used in specific mining and metallurgical situations is complicated, and is likely to be subjected to closer scrutiny than in the past. The hope is expressed that the tentative conclusions reached will give rise to more-quantitative analyses from those qualified to undertake such an exercise. Inevitably, the questions asked at the outset give rise to more questions, and the more interesting ones are posed in the context of each conclusion.

Strategic Ca-bearing minerals like scheelite and fluorite are usually separated by flotation, yet the separation is quite difficult due to their similar surface Ca active sites. Compared with the conventional strong collector sodium oleate (NaOL), lead nitrate-benzohydroxamic acid (Pb-BHA), complex collector shows a better selectivity for scheelite, yet its high cost hinders its wide application. Therefore, a novel collector (Pb-BHA-NaOL complex) was initially developed in this work to overcome the abovementioned dilemma. The flotation results of a single mineral showed that Pb-BHA-NaOL had a better selectivity for scheelite than Pb-BHA. Under the conditions of sequential assembly of Pb, BHA and NaOL at the molar ratio of 240:120:1 and pH 9.0, selective separation of scheelite from fluorite could be achieved without adding any depressants. In addition, for the same preferred scheelite recovery, Pb- BHA-NaOL could also save approximately 20% Pb and BHA compared with Pb-BHA. The analyses of the zeta potential measurement and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy indicated that Pb-BHA-NaOL showed stronger adsorption on scheelite relative to fluorite. Meanwhile, Pb-BHA-NaOL showed more adsorption modes and higher utilisation of Pb and BHA on scheelite than Pb-BHA, which was due to the accelerator, NaOL. The production of precipitated silica in the United States is about 145,000 tons of SiO2 and its prices vary significantly (from $ 1 to $ 4.5 per kg) depending on the area of its application. One of the most important parameters is its specific surface characterising dispersion (particle size and shape, presence or absence of pores), at a certain value of which the material acquires new properties and quality. At present, a technology has been developed for processing slag from phosphorus production to produce precipitated silica (‘white soot’) with a high specific surface and the possibility of extracting valuable components such as rare-earth metals (REMs) into a product enriched with them has been shown. However, the content of impurities in the deposited silicon dioxide, such as aluminum and iron, is above acceptable limits and may affect the quality of the final products. Therefore, along with the structure and specific surface, a very important characteristic of ‘white soot’ is the chemical purity of the material. In turn, calcium oxide occupies a significant share in the concentrate of rare-earth metals, which affects the content of ΣREMs oxides, which does not exceed 17.3 %. The low content of a valuable component may affect the feasibility of further processing. For the most complete utilisation of phosphorus slag, the authors propose a method for their acid processing, which allows for minimising the conversion of impurities to finely divided silica and collective concentrate, which will improve the quality of these products. "Homogeneous populations are required to perform descriptive, probabilistic, and inference statistics and to support stable, predictable mining operations. The geological and downstream processing environments are, however, highly heterogeneous. The complex nature of mining environments requires means to identify and define multipopulation environments that could affect the performance of mining value chains. A study performed at several operating mines suggests that the impact of heterogeneous or variable geological, mining, and plant processing environments on overall mining value chain performance may not be a key focus area at these operations. This was illustrated through the use of basic and spatial statistics, which included the log-probability plot, a modified range equation, and chronovariography. The findings reflect high relative variability in the geological and processing environments studied and mining operators’ inability to effectively deal with the sources and consequences of variability. The study suggests that a focus on heterogeneity in complex mining operations may significantly enhance overall mining performance. IntroductionHeterogeneity and why it mattersHeterogeneity refers to a state or quality of being variable/diverse and comprising different non-compatible elements or parts. In statistical terms a heterogeneous population can refer to a population comprising different non-compatible sub-populations or a multipopulation environment. The latter is commonly found in natural environments such as geological environments (Bardossy and Fodor, 2001). The inherent heterogeneity of complex geological environments is also referred to as spatial heterogeneity. Heterogeneity or variability, however, also occurs over time at mining operations. A case in point is variable ore composition on a conveyance system feeding a processing plant or product stockpile.Heterogeneity associated with the mining environment can significantly influence key aspects of day-to-day mining operations such as sampling, the use of descriptive, probabilistic, and inference calculations, and an operation’s ability to manage and control the mining value chain as a whole."

Reduced downtime and maximized availability of mining machines are the key factors in optimizing production rates. As technology moves industry towards an age of ?intelligent machines? it sets the foundation for change in mining equipment design, functionality, and maintenance. Recent mining machine designs are integrating more and more electronic components into the core functionality of individual piece of equipment due to regulatory and legislative requirements, such as TIER rating, as well as from a safety aspect such as personal detection systems. This paper describes the use of existing on-board electronic equipment to increase machine availability through automated maintenance planning and diagnostic fault-finding capability. The automated maintenance planning takes place on the machine itself in order to be independent of the mine?s infrastructure, while the diagnostic capabilities allow for reduced downtime. The paper also presents a concept to transfer operational data to surface to be able to optimize planning of maintenance and to reduce downtime. Case studies are presented where such systems have been commissioned and are currently in operation, the possibilities of this technology application for the future are examined.

This paper presents an evaluation of the effect that the mineral feed characteristics have on the metallurgical performance in an industrial flotation circuit. Variables such as mineralogy, particle size, solid content and mineral grade were evaluated using a flotation simulator, which was previously developed and validated using industrial data from different concentrators. The metallurgical performance was evaluated not only from the point of view of recovery and concentrate grade, but also by analysing less common variables such as froth carrying rate, froth and collection recovery, water recovery and others. Then, new data from the industrial flotation circuit was used to complement this analysis and evaluate the simulator predictability by comparing simulated and measured data. The results allowed for the quantification of the significant effect that mineralogy and particle size have on recovery and/or concentrate grade. Therefore, the grinding stage and flotation cells design become important factors to avoid a significant loss in metallurgical performance when feed mineral characteristics change in an industrial operation. In this context, an evaluation of cells design and arrangement should be performed to compensate the loss in recovery and concentrate grade in order to find an optimal operating condition. "The coal strength parameter is used in operations such as the selection and design of mechanical excavators and coal crushing/grinding equipment. However, coring or cutting prismatic specimens from coal for the standard strength tests is difficult, and sometimes not possible. For this reason a method for the indirect determination of coal strength from easy tests would be useful. In this study, the predictability of coal strength from the needle penetration test was investigated. This is a very easy and practical test method. Point load and needle penetration index (NPI) tests were carried out on coal specimens from Çayirhan coalfield in Turkey. The point load indexes were converted to the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) values by using the general conversion factor. The UCS and NPI values were evaluated using regression analysis. A strong linear relationship was found between the two parameters. The conversion factor for the UCS-NPI ratio is 0.35 for the tested coal samples. It is concluded that the UCS of coal can be predicted from the NPI.IntroductionKnowledge of coal strength is important for the selection and design of mechanical excavators and coal crushing and grinding equipment. Waste printed circuit boards (WPCBs) are excellent metal resources. Mineralogical characteristics of different components in WPCBs were analysed in this study. Organic-enriched particles, fibreglass-enriched particles, associated particles and metal-enriched particles were obtained by density gradient method. Subsequently, the elemental composition, morphology, dissociation characteristics, functional group composition and phase composition of different components were analysed by X-ray fluorescence spectrometer (XRF), scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectrometer (SEM+EDS), infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Elemental analysis results show that Cu is mainly contained in metal-enriched particles. SEM+EDS analysis results demonstrate that ideal dissociation can be achieved when the WPCBs are broken to -1 mm. Organic matter particles are enriched with carbon and oxygen elements, while fibreglass particles and associated particles mainly contain Al and Si elements, verified by XRD analysis. FT-IR results show that hydrophilic and hydrophobic groups exist widely in all components, caused by widespread organic matter. This study reveals the important properties of different components in WPCBs, which is of great significance for the subsequent separation process. The Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) recently conducted full-scale explosion experiments; these experiments evaluated the strength characteristics of various seal designs used for safely isolating worked-out areas in underground coal mines. Large-scale explosion tests were conducted within the multiple entry section of PRL's Lake Lynn Experimental Mine (LLEM) employing the only currently accepted test method endorsed by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) for seal design in American mines. These explosion tests are labor-intensive, expensive to conduct, and can interfere with other critical underground safety and health research programs conducted by NIOSH. Therefore, the PRL has developed an alternative seal evaluation method, based on a hydrostatic pressure loading concept, that can facilitate the in-situ testing of seals in an operating mine. Two chambers within LLEM and one within the Safety Research Coal Mine (SRCM) were used for hydrostatic pressure loading various seal designs. The results from tests in these chambers compare favorably with those from the large-scale explosion tests in the multiple entries. Preliminary size-scaling relationships for predicting the strength of standard seal designs as a function of entry size is also presented. In addition to testing seal designs at the required 20 psi static pressure level, the new facilities also allow for the determination of the seal's ultimate failure pressure. This new approach shows promise as an alternative evaluation method for improving mine sealing technologies which, in turn, will enhance the safety of the underground personnel.

A conceptual scoping study was conducted to investigate pre-concentration options for upgrading ore from an Ag-Pb-Zn deposit. The low grade of the ore would result in only modest economic returns, given current market conditions. Several pre-concentration options were considered. These included: selective mining, crushing and pre-screening (following either standard or high intensity selective blasting), bulk ore sorting, particle sorting, jigging, dense medium separation, or combinations of these approaches. Flowsheets were developed for each option, and the upgrade performance was modelled using Limn to determine mass balances and stream tables. Due to the limited availability of test work data, the models were based not only on what test data was available but also on case study data found in the literature. The Bazin technique was used to derive assay by size data for different streams following crushing. Equipment lists and preliminary layouts were established based on the stream tables, and capital and operating costs were estimated for each flowsheet. This information was used to carry out a preliminary economic evaluation using net present value and sensitivity analysis. In this case, the most economically attractive process was found to be particle sorting; although further benefits may be realised by combining with bulk sorting. Definition of mineral resources and reserves forms the basis for effective mine planning and reliable public reporting of mineral assets. Historically the mineral resource and reserves declaration process has been the domain of the geology and surveying disciplines, with the declaration of the reserves by the surveyor being based on the application of modifying factors to the declared resources available for mining. As part of an ongoing process to improve efficiency, reliability, and reproducibility of results, this approach has been revised and enhanced through the introduction of a revised process and reconciliation tools. The revised approach to reserve definition is based on the definition of scheduled resources, at an appropriate confidence estimate in the context of an approved business plan, over the anticipated life of the mineral asset being applied to define reserves. This planning and scheduling is developed, during the annual business planning process, by the mine planning department using tools such as CADSMine?. The scheduled area together with the application of revised modifying factors is tabulated in the BME (basic mine equation) and reflects the mine production plan over time. Simplification of the modifying factors to dilution and losses underpins the simple yet robust approach to improved definition of reserves in this process and in the basic resource to reserve equation (BR2RE). Dilution intrinsically affects grade but not metal content, whereas the losses reflect both the efficiency of mining and planning and are reflected in metal losses, area losses, or both. Reconciliation of the derived ?resource converted to reserve? area, (which is based on the business plan from CADSMine?), versus the ?resource available for mining?, (which is derived from Datamine?), underpins the robustness and auditability of the reserves declaration. This R&R accounting and reconciliation approach is transparent and facilitates interrogation of the logic and rationale of long-term business planning and project strategy. These numbers are processed and reported in the logic of the basic resource equation (BRE), which also addresses aspects such as white areas (future and historic), tail management, and partial extraction (non-scheduled pillars, etc.) in compliance with SAMREC definitions. Areas that do not have the necessary confidence and data support to be declared as resources find their space as pre-resource (outside the domain of public reporting), outlining existing potential for future extraction and reporting. Use of the BRE leads ultimately to a complete, refined accounting and reconciliation-oriented approach for all production entities. The revised resource and reserve process includes the discipline of mine planning as intrinsic to the definition and declaration of resources and reserves. Subsequent to the change in process, the resources and reserves have truly become the domain of the mineral resource management discipline. This paper defines the logic of the basic resource equations and outlines their application in the definition and reconciliation of mineral resources and reserves at Anglo American Platinum Limited.

"The start of mining operations often raises serious financial problems. In marginal cases promoters frequently demand financial aid from governments.In the past, the financial assistance has taken the form of gifts, procurement contracts, etc., but aid in such form has been severely criticized. A new formula has been developed to provide a more equitable distribution of the revenues accruing to the government and to private capital.The benefits to these two parties have been evaluated in an hypothetical case and compared in terms of internal rates of return on their investment, their shares of the undiscounted cash flows and their primary profits.The method based on the non-zero sum game theory provides a means for suggesting the lowest feasible annual production and the optimal sum contributed by the government in the form of outright gift, equity capital and convertible bonds. Other financial hypotheses can also be optimized by the computerized analysis."

The Hydraulic Institute has completed the task of developing a new ANSI/HI standard 12.1-12.6 (2005) for rotodynamic (centrifugal) slurry pumps covering nomenclature, definitions, applications, and operation. The standard provides examples of the different slurry pump types and contains an extensive section on pump and slurry definitions. The effect of slurry on pump performance is covered along with the pumping of froth. Reference is also made to ANSI/HI standard 9.6.7 (2004), which contains anew method for pump performance correction when handling viscous fluids. Classification of slurry services is established and then is used to determine limitations on velocities and total head per pump in order to obtain acceptable wear performance. The new service class, head per stage and other limits are directly related to capital and other cost considerations that will affect solids transport system economics. The writers review the contents of the new standard, highlight the main points, and discuss the reason for the slurry classification, corresponding limits and expected implications, particularly with respect to operating costs of the pumps in solids transport systems.

"Due to the challenging geological environment of the Postmasburg Manganese Field (PMF), a study was conducted to determine if any benefits would derive from the inclusion of resistivity data during threedimensional (3D) modelling of the manganese resource. This was achieved by estimating manganese resources from 2011/2012 drilling data and comparing them with manganese resources estimated from the same drilling data and resistivity data collected during 2013 and 2017.Both models were adjusted to limit their extent to the same 3D modelling space. Significant volume and tonnage differences were observed for all lithological units. The greatest differences were noted in the manganiferous zones of alteration – 7.200 Mt for the geological model versus 3.700 Mt for the geoelectric model.This study showed that the inclusion of resistivity data can reduce exploration costs significantly, as a direct consequence of the resistivity data allowing more accurate siting of boreholes. This decreases the number of boreholes, samples, and analyses required due to the 3D electrical delineation of mineralized areas prior to drilling.An additional benefit is the ability to more correctly forecast the net present value of an operation due to more accurate estimation of manganese resources and stripping ratios. This is clearly demonstrated by the estimated gross profit estimation of R409 million for the geological resource model versus R264 million for the geoelectric resource model.The addition of resistivity data can, therefore, reduce exploration costs and can increase confidence in geological and financial modelling. It would be reasonable to conclude that this approach could also be used for karsthosted massive sulphide deposits. IntroductionAccording to Corathers (2014) and Gajigo, Mutambatsere. and Adjei (2011), South Africa holds between 75–80% of global manganese reserves, followed by Ukraine (10%), Australia (3%), India (3%), and Gabon (2%). The known, land-based, manganese resources located elsewhere are estimated at 2%.The majority of economically important sedimentary manganese ore deposits in South Africa are situated in the Northern Cape Province (Gutzmer, 1996). Manganese ores of the Postmasburg Manganese Field (PMF) were discovered in 1922, and the Kalahari Manganese Field (KMF) in 1940. According to Astrup and Tsikos (1998) and Gutzmer (1996), mining of manganese ore from the PMF ceased during 1989 in favour of the superior quality of manganese ore from the KMF."

Middleburg Ferrochrome (MFC), a company in Samancor Chrome, commissioned a new ferrochrome smelter in March 2009. This is a 60 MW DC-arc furnace with a DC power supply for the smelting of Transvaal chromite ore fines. With the benefit of 12 years' experience with this technology while operating a 44 MW DC-arc furnace, MFC mitigated all known challenges and considered up-scaling risk in the new plant, which had a rapid ramp-up to full power in 02 of 2009. Good operating practices, as made possible by robust equipment selection, including a thyristor rectifier set of proven technology, and operation with optimal slag chemistry, leads to a safe and effective plant operation. With the optimized furnace design and a correctly sized power conditioning system, using only standard (static) harmonic filters and a correctly sized smoothing reactor, the arc furnace is not a 'dirty load' for the utility, staying well within IEC limits for power quality. A patented arc compensation system is installed and allows for full arc position control (to compensate for magnetic field induced arc deflection) so that a symmetrical crucible is maintained, significantly benefiting refractory life. The principal benefits gained from the MFC process is the fact that ore fines are processed, without metallurgical coke, and higher chrome recoveries are achieved compared to other smelting technologies when using a DC open arc for smelting. Rare earth elements (REE) are present at concentrations of approximately 0.36 % in phosphogypsum stacks located in Phalaborwa, South Africa. The REE are present in the phosphogypsum in solid solution in the gypsum and as fluorine and aluminium rich precipitates. Recovery of the REE offers opportunities for valorization and reducing the environmental impact of the phosphogypsum waste. This paper presents the results of investigations into the leaching behaviour of rare earth elements and other impurities from phosphogypsum using aqueous sulfuric acid. The effects of acid concentration, temperature, residence time, and the influence of impurities were evaluated for their impact on the solubility of rare earth elements in a sulfate medium. It was found that a significant fraction of the REE can be leached from the phosphogypsum in a range of conditions much less severe than traditional hard rock rare earth processing conditions. The REE were leached at a sulfuric acid concentration of 110 g/l, temperature of 30°C – 40°C and a residence time of approximately 8 hours.

A method is proposed for the evaluation of the influence of grout prestressing systems on the support resistance offered by timber packs. It is shown that, in order not to reduce the load-carrying capacity of timber packs, grout prestressing systems need to be at least as stiff as a single timber rise. The method was used to establish strength specifications for the grout prestressing systems to be used under non-seismic and seismic conditions. For non-seismic requirements, the 24-hour grout strength needs to be at least 1,7 MPa, and the 7-day grout strength 4,9 MPa. The investigation showed that the proposed strength specification is realistic in the light of current grout-strength capabilities. For seismic requirements, the grout strength needs to be at least 4 MPa and 8 MPa to prevent extensive damage to the grout during seismic events with a peak velocity of 1m/s 3 m/s respectively.

The Barrick North Mara Mine and the Advanced Systems Group at SGS Minerals collaborated on the implementation of a grinding expert system for the control and optimisation of a single semi autogenous (SAG) mill. Over the last 5 years, grinding expert control has gained wide acceptance by mineral processors. In this paper, two key factors for success are highlighted: the adaptability of the software tools and the interaction with site personnel. Created with SGS?s MET expert console (MEC) toolkit, and running on Gensym?s G2 real time inference software, the North Mara expert logic has been set up to keep a steady and on spec leaching feed slurry while striving to maximize throughput. Leach feed stability was achieved by standardizing operating practices across shifts; a result of successful collaboration with site personnel in developing a consistent control strategy. The strategy maintains the SAG load and power draw in an optimised range by manipulating SAG feed rates and inlet water flow. The project life-cycle was slightly longer than average due to site specific constraints. One of these was the high turnover rate of site?s workforce during the project, coupled with the availability of key staff on site due to the fly in fly out work roster. These constraints called for different, and innovative ways of project commissioning and hand-over. This paper describes details of the control solution, its implementation as well as results and conclusions.

Grains are subject to contamination by mycotoxins which are metabolic by-products of various fungi. The fungal infestations produce local concentrations of the mycotoxins thousands of times higher than the average. These facts make the sampling of the grain for assessment of the mean mycotoxin levels potentially very difficult. In the context of sampling theory, this morphology of the infestations creates a very high distributional and intrinsic heterogeneity of the grain shipment. The distributions of mycotoxin concentrations in seaborne shipments that exist at loading and the number and intensity of infestations that develop under shipping conditions are unknown. All grain shipments carry spores that may give rise to mycotoxin-producing colonies; moisture and temperature determine the final extent of the problem. This paper develops the value of the sampling constant with respect to intrinsic heterogeneity based on data on observed Ochratoxin A (OTA) concentrations in individual wheat kernels. A useful relationship between the distribution of mycotoxin concentrations on a kernel to kernel basis and the distribution of concentration over subsamples is developed.
