Based on many years experience, the well proven Swiss Tunnel Seismic Prediction System TSP has been substantially augmented for online geological prognosis in underground construction. In its latest version, the Integrated Seismic Imaging System ISIS provides high resolution seismic images of the rock mass around a tunnel face via an array of standard anchor rods. These rods contain 3D-geophones at their tips and can be readily installed during excavation work. A further innovative component of the system is the newly developed high-power repetitive source for application in hard rock: a pneumatic hammer with laser triggering to be mounted on construction machinery. A user-friendly software package permits online data acquisition and processing, 3D-visualization, and a first geological interpretation. Tomographic images of compressional and shear wave velocity fields at fault zones in metamorphic rock of the Gotthard Base Tunnel in the Central Alps are presented. Das langjährig bewährte Schweizer Tunnelseismische Vorauserkundungssystem TSP wurde inzwischen wesentlich weiterentwickelt. In seiner neuen Version, dem Integrierten Seismischen Imaging System ISIS, ermöglicht es hochauflösende seismische Abbildungen des Gebirges im Vorfeld und Umfeld einer Tunnelauffahrung mit Hilfe einer Anordnung von Felsankern, die an ihren Spitzen 3-Komponenten-Geophone enthalten. Eine weitere Neuerung von ISIS ist die pneumatische Hochleistungs-Impulsquelle mit Laser-Triggering. Eine benutzerfreundliche, interaktive Software ermöglicht die online Datenerfassung und -auswertung, 3D-Visualisierung und eine erste geologische Interpretation. Tomografische Abbildungen von Kompressions- und Scherwellengeschwindigkeitsfeldern an Störungszonen in metamorphem Gestein des Gotthard-Basistunnels werden gezeigt. Basé sur de nombreuses années d’expérience, le système suisse, bien établit, de reconnaissance sismique à l’avancement des tunnels (système TSP), a été sensiblement amélioré pour obtenir une prévision géologique en temps réel durant l’avancement de travaux souterrains. Sa dernière version, le Système Intégré d’Imagerie Sismique (ISIS), fournit des images sismiques haute-résolution du massif rocheux à l’avant d’un tunnel grâce à un réseau de tiges d’ancrage standard. Ces tiges, équipées à leur extrémité de géophones 3 composantes, s’installent très aisément durant les travaux d’excavation habituels. Le élément d’innovation récente concern le nouvelle source très répétitive et de forte puissance pour les applications aux roches dures: un marteau pneumatique déclenché par un système à laser. Un ensemble de programmes informatiques convivial permet l’acquisition et le traitement en temps réel des signaux et produit une vue 3D ainsi qu’une première interprétation géologique. Nous présenterons des images de réflexion d’ondes de compression et de cisaillement ainsi que des inversions tomographiques de zones de faille dans des terrains métamorphiques obtenues à l’occasion du creusement du tunnel de base du Gothard, dans les alpes centrales.

In August 1965, the late Mr Alan Smith, then Mill Superintendent at Gold Mines of Kalgoorlie (GMK), Australia, asked me to investigate the planting of vegetation on the GMK slimes dams in order to ease the dust problem in urban and industrial areas-a problem that is caused largely by dust from these barren slimes dams. My early sources of information were the comprehensive papers in various issues of the Journal of The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. However, the climate of Johannesburg differs from that of Kalgoorlie. The average Johannesburg rainfall, which falls mostly in summer, is 730 mm, and the average maximum summer temperature is 26°C (top 34°C). The winters are cool, the average maximum being 18°C (low -7°C). Kalgoorlie, on the other hand, receives, on average, 257 mm of sporadic rainfall, has hot dry summers with an average maximum of 35°C (top 45°C), and cool winters with an average maximum of 18°C (low -2°C). My obvious choice was to look at established trees growing on the GMK lease. A number of Athel pines were growing vigorously adjacent to the Oroya mining and geology offices and also on a nearby sand dump. The Athel pine (Tamarix aphylla), which is native to North Africa, Asia, and India, was originally introduced into Australia in 1936 by Mr Essington Lewis, then manager of BHP. His cuttings were planted in Whyalla, where some difficulty had been experienced in finding trees and shrubs that would flourish despite the district's low rainfall. In August 1965, cuttings of approximately 20 cm length and 1 cm diameter were taken from the GMK trees, stripped of leaves, and placed in jars of water in the sun. When the cuttings had sprouted both leaves and roots, they were planted in local soil in tins (about 20 cm high and 10 cm in diameter), and watered daily. In October 1965, when the new shoots were about 8 cm long, the trees were transplanted onto a lower flat section¬approximately 30 m wide, 30 m long, and 2 m high-of the Trafalgar slimes dam. No additional soil or fertilizer was used, and the trees were planted in their tins, the bases of which had been removed (the tin would eventually rust away). A few common varieties of non-prickly cactus and two native salt bush (spp Atriplex) were also planted, but did not survive, probably because of the acidity of the slime. During the summer of 1965/1966, Kalgoorlie's rainfall was 88 per cent above the average, and this probably helped the trees to survive. The moisture content was usually about 2,5 per cent from about 10 cm below the surface, and the pH value of the slime (d80 approximately 75 µm) was about 6. The trees were watered twice a week for the first four months and then left untended. By 1974 they had grown to only about 0,7 m, which indicated that their growth in slime was very slow. Other Athel pines were planted on the wall of the dam, but did not survive beyond 1974, probably because of the steep (about 500) slope and the hardness of the walls, which were initially formed by hand-shovelling of the slime as the height of the dam was raised. Five of the six Athel pines planted in 1965, which probably reached maturity (approximately 5 m in height) in 1981-16 years after being planted-have survived. In the early 1980s, waste rock had to be dumped on the dam, but the management of KMA (now KCGM) took care to ensure that the trees were not buried. Trials are being conducted on other tailings dams so that the performance of cuttings taken from the trees on Trafalgar dam can be compared with that of cuttings taken at various sites in Western Australia. It might also be worth while for an attempt to be made to strike cuttings from Trafalgar dam in pots containing different mixtures of soil and slime.

The interactions between apatite and hematite were studied through zeta potential and stability experiments, for this paper. The zeta potential measurements were conducted in both background electrolyte and mineral supernatants. The difference in electrokinetic properties of minerals in the presence and absence of supernatant was explained in terms of the dissolution of minerals and the subsequent readsorption of dissolved species at the mineral-water interface. The stability measurements in individual and mixed mineral systems were also performed to identify the extent of interaction between apatite and hematite upon their direct contact. The results from stability measurements in individual and mixed mineral systems indicate that there is an interaction between apatite and hematite. "The purpose of this study was to demonstrate unmanned aircraft system (UAS) technology in opencast highwall mapping using the experience at Isibonelo Colliery in Mpumalanga Province of South Africa. In opencast mines, geological mapping has evolved over time and there have been challenges in extracting valuable information from exposed highwalls due to restricted access for safety reasons. A UAS was used at Isibonelo Colliery to conduct highwall mapping, using drone-based digital photogrammetry techniques. A demonstration survey was undertaken during February 2018. The highwall flyover demonstration was planned for two areas (North and South pits) where field control points were placed by the mine survey department. A contractor used a DJI Phantom 4 (Pro) for the highwall mapping. Raw data was processed within 48 hours and a 3D model of the mapped pit area was produced. Further data extraction included obtaining updated weathering and lithological contact elevations and thicknesses for use in short-term planning. The results showed a good correlation between the resource model and the UAS data model. The project was considered a success and highwall flyover mapping and is now standard practice at Isibonelo Colliery.IntroductionDetailed geological mapping is crucial to the understanding of the structure of any mineral deposit. Several mapping methods may be applied depending on the available exposure/outcrop and nature of the orebody; for example, coal deposits typically suboutcrop only, therefore an opencut highwall provides the best exposure for mapping the geology. Mapped information, when incorporated into a resource model (generated from exploration borehole data), improves the understanding of the orebody or coal seam. This research paper focused on the use of unmanned aircraft system (UAS) technology for pit highwall mapping to generate data for updating geological models and avail the latest information to mine planning to improve the short-term plans."

Electrowinning is the final step in the hydrometallurgical production of high purity copper, involving the passage of electric current through an electrolyte and consequent plating of solid copper to form cathode sheets. Key electrowinning performance indicators are the current efficiency, specific energy consumption, yield, and quality of the metal. The high energy demand and associated cost mean that determination of performance indicators is critical during operation, but ‘online’ measurement is impractical due to the nature of the measurements and corrosive environment brought about by acid mist. This research considered the development of a predictive electrowinning model as a shift towards a pre-emptive approach to attaining plant performance data. A steady-state model was created from input variables available in the industry, using a first-principles approach combining mass balances, electrochemical and thermodynamic equations, and property correlations. A circuit diagram equivalent of an electrowinning cell, containing multiple pairs of electrodes, was used as the backbone of the model. The kinetics of each electrochemical reaction were modelled including iron as a major impurity. Losses in current efficiency due to ineffective electrode contact, short circuits, and stray currents were also incorporated. The model was used to predict the current efficiencies for tests performed at varying conditions in a bench-scale electrowinning cell; the average absolute error between the measured and predicted current efficiencies was 3.2%. The model requires a unique parameter fitting approach for each industrial operation; if parameters are customised for specific plants, the model will be a useful tool to predict performance and can aid the development of effective process control systems in copper electrowinning tank houses. The in-service degradation of the mechanical properties of steel components through the damage mechanism of high temperature hydrogen attack (HTHA), is a topic of concern in the refining and green hydrogen industry. This damage mechanism occurs in susceptible steels operating in environments at high temperatures and hydrogen pressures. The current investigation deals with the indirect monitoring of mechanical degradation via tracking of the swelling strain in affected structures. An autoclave with an AISI 316 shell was utilized to simulate accelerated HTHA damage at 550 °C and 46 bar for exposure times ranging from zero to 700 hours. The progress of the HTHA damage was tracked using encapsulated high-temperature strain gauges. The correlation between the swelling strain and mechanical property degradation was studied to develop a methodology for the continuous monitoring of embrittlement. The tensile sample orientation of the carbon steel plate was included as a variable, i.e., samples parallel, transverse, or perpendicular to the plate rolling direction were included, since it has been shown that the sample orientation influences the HTHA damage features. For the through-thickness orientation, and upon exceeding a threshold value of exposure time, all tensile properties were severely degraded, with values in the order of a 90 per cent reduction being observed. It was found that the degradation of carbon steel mechanical properties can be correlated to the swelling strain measured during exposure. The critical point for mechanical property degradation in the plate through-thickness orientation, whereafter a severe decrease in the ductility of the material occurs, was found to be in the order of 1% of the total swelling strain measured during exposure, equivalent to 65 microstrain. This threshold was found to be significantly lower than that expected from the literature, where limits of 400 to 1000 microstrain were postulated.

The Moab Khotsong Metallurgical Complex comprises a gold recovery circuit (Noligwa Gold Plant) and a uranium recovery circuit (South Uranium Plant). The metallurgical complex employs the reverse leach technology for the recovery of uranium; specifically, uranium extraction prior to gold using acid leaching processing. The inherent uranium species in the ore are uraninite, coffinite and brannerite. The slurry that has been subjected to the uranium leach is further subjected to solid-liquid separation to separate the uranium in a solution through counter-current decantation and the solids (solids carrying all the gold), which are repulped and returned to the gold plant for gold processing. The uranium leaching process is critical to the uranium playing a pivotal role as a value adding by-product to the gold operation. The benefit of adopting this reverse leach process, for improved gold recovery, is that it exposes gold particles occluded within the uranium matrices and avails them for cyanidation. However, the drive for operational efficiency in uranium extraction must be weighed against the incremental operating cost against the backdrop of depressed spot uranium market prices. Over the years, efforts were directed at maintaining the benefit of extracting uranium to enhance gold recovery and simultaneously, optimising the operating cost model for the uranium operation to remain relevant to the gold operation. The aim of this paper and the corresponding presentation is to give an account of the uranium processing optimisation journey embarked on over the years; namely, the operational tradeoffs made in the process of ensuring that uranium continues to add value to the gold operation. These challenges were faced while striking a fine balance between processing cost and operational efficiencies against the prevailing depressed uranium spot market prices. Mineralogical- and laboratory tests conducted form the support basis for the results and observations articulated in the paper. The bottom drainage roadway plays a crucial role in preventing coal and gas outbursts by using underground gas drainage methods. Therefore, it is essential to select the ideal position of the bottom drainage roadway. In this paper use a combination of geological data and numerical simulation to study the ideal position of the bottom drainage roadway, we taking the gas drainage of the first workface of No. 3 coal seam in the Yuxi coal mine in China as an example. The geological study showed a limestone marker layer at an average vertical distance of 14 m from the first mining face. Using this marker layer, the bottom drainage roadway could be excavated without the risk of accidentally exposing the coal seam, and less crosscutting borehole drilling from the bottom drainage roadway would be required. Based on the needs of gas control, the layout of the bottom drainage roadway was selected as an external stagger type. Combined with the numerical simulation results, when located 20 m outside of the mining workface ‘footprint’ on the horizontal projection, the bottom drainage roadway was a sufficient distance from the stress concentration area during mining of workface 1301, which facilitated roadway maintenance. Furthermore, the length of the crosscutting boreholes is also relatively short, which reduces the amount and cost of drilling. The results of this study are expected to provide a reference for the selection of an ideal position of the bottom drainage roadway in field engineering.

The hard rock gold and platinum mines in South Africa have seen little development in the technology of mining. Holes are still drilled in the rock—though the latest water hydraulic rockdrills will complete that task in two minutes compared with the eight hours for hand drilling. Charging up is with far safer explosives and with available initiation systems it is no longer necessary to run up the face lighting each fuse. Movement of rock in the stope is predominantly by means of scraper buckets and scraper winches — these were first introduced in the 1920s.Support is still mainly rock, either in sit pillars or backfill, or alternatively wood. Just as themining process has changed very little it is hardly surprising that the productivity of mining is also relatively unchanged. Major efforts have been made to mechanize the mining process. However, most of the narrow reef mines where ‘trackless mechanized mining’ was introduced in the early 1980s have reverted to conventional mining. In the wider reefs mechanized mining is the option of choice, unfortunately most of the gold and platinum mines have very narrow reefs that are not suitable to’ off the shelf’ equipment. The move to introduce room-and-pillar mining into the narrow UG2reefs is at the expense of mining more waste with the reef, fortunately it appears that appropriate waste and reef separation processes are available. Room-and-pillar mining followed by long holedrilling and blasting of a narrow slot of reef out of the pillars currently appears to offer the best of both worlds—maximum reef recovery with minimum waste dilution. All these mining methods are still dependent on blasting to break the rock. The cyclic nature of mining by blasting places severe constraints on the rate of face advance that can be achieved and consequently the utilization of the invested capital. For narrow reef hard rock mining to break out of these constraints and to really make progress in the 21st century it is necessary to follow the lead of the soft rock mining industry and change the technology of mining. In the underground coal mining industry, coal cutting has been proved to be the most cost-effective solution. In narrow reef hard rock mining the future must be based on the development of non-explosive methods of rock breaking that in turn are integrated into continuous mining systems. Non-explosive so that the mining operation can be conducted on a continuous basis, with nodelays for the removal of blasting fumes. Continuous mining also maximizes the return on the capital invested in developing the mine. Rock cutting will define the stope width and that in turn will be designed to minimize waste dilution; it will also minimize damage to the hanging and create a safer environment. Mechanization makes it possible to automate the mining process and further improve safety by positioning the operators in a safer environment. This paper defines the work to evaluate cutting processes carried out by Sandvik TamrockVoest Alpine. The evaluation was in the UG2 and the pyroxenite and norite typical of the Merensky Platinum Reefs. A novel form of mining machine is proposed that will utilize existing technology. Finally the paper describes the interaction between Sandvik Tamrock Voest Alpineand Lonmin Platinum and the initiation of an agreement to develop and trial a prototype hard rock narrow reef mining machine.

Permitted explosives in South Africa are those explosives approved by the relevant State authority for use in fiery coal mines. The main tests that an explosive must pass for this approval are the gallery tests derived from the Buxton (U.K.) classification. These tests are described briefly. In addition, the safety of permitted explosives is affected by their ability to deflagrate, and to produce a naked flame after blasting, rather than to detonate fully. Tests done on this phenomenon are discussed. A further potential hazard of explosives is after-blast fume. The testing and behaviour of several permitted explosives in this respect are covered, both in the laboratory and in the field. Performance testing of permitted explosives, specifically the double-pipe, underwater, and ballistic mortar tests, and their relationship to field use, are considered in some detail. The application of traditional and new tests to permitted explosives leads to guidelines for the safe and efficient formulation and use of these products.

The mine production scheduling problem (MPSP) has been studied since the 1960s, and remains an active area of computational research. In extending the concepts of the MPSP, the automated mine may now be regarded as a hierarchical intelligent agent in which the bottom layer consists of distributed robotic equipment, while strategic functionality occupies the higher layers. Here we present a disambiguation of artificial intelligence, machine learning, computational optimization, and automation within the mining context. Specifically, the Q-learning algorithm has been adapted to generate the initial solutions for a high-performing strategic mine planning algorithm, originally developed by Lamghari, Dimitrakopoulos and Ferland, based on the variable neighbourhood descent (VND) metaheuristic. The hierarchical intelligent agent is presented as an integrative conceptual platform, defining the interaction between our new Q-learning adaptation and Lamghari’s VND, and potentially other hierarchically controlled components of an artificially intelligent mine, having various degrees of automation. Sample computations involving Q-learning and VND are presented.

"Coal seam gas problems can adversely affect the safety and productivity of underground coal mines, leading to fatalities and financial losses. Conventional gas management technologies using ventilation and gas drainage are unable to deal with the high and irregular gas emissions associated with high-production longwall mining. New technologies need to be developed to supplement the traditional gas management techniques to minimize the hazard of coal seam gas. Thin spray-on liners (TSLs) have gained some success for rock surface support since their introduction to the mining industry. Due to their relatively low permeability and appropriate mechanical properties, TSLs also show potential to be used as a gas management tool in underground coal mines.In this paper we review the current gas management challenges and discuss the potential use of TSLs as a gas management tool in underground coal mines. This may involve reducing gas migration into the excavations/roadways, enhancing in-seam gas drainage, and preventing spontaneous combustion. Some potential areas for future research work are identified. IntroductionWhen a coal seam is influenced by mining activities, gas stored inside is liberated into the underground ventilation system. Gas emissions have created serious difficulties for the coal mining industry around the world. Therefore, coal mines have to develop effective strategies to control the gas concentration below the threshold value to meet statutory requirements. Ventilation has been the first solution in gas management for underground coal mining. When the emitted gas cannot be effectively diluted by ventilated air, gas drainage using pre- and/or post-drainage has to be introduced. However, even with ventilation and gas drainage, irregular gas emissions usually increase the gas concentration in roadways and slow down the development rate, thus causing significant economic loss to the coal mining industry (Thakur, 2006). Therefore, new technologies need to be developed to address this issue and mitigate the explosion risk."

"A downward trend in tyre life on haul trucks at an open pit iron ore mine prompted an investigation into the current tyre management strategy in order to improve tyre life. ‘Best practice’ was compared to the current tyre management strategy at the mine to determine aspects that could be improved. Aspects that showed significant room for improvement included employee tyre awareness, tyre pressure maintenance, and road conditions. For each of these aspects a plausible alternative was suggested.A new tyre management strategy was formulated as a step-by-step guide on how to implement the proposed changes. Each step introduces new initiatives but at the same time builds on the previous step’s success. A sensitivity analyses was performed to determine the impact of the proposed changes, with the variables being the reduction in the percentage of premature tyre failure, and the reduction of the site wear rate.The ‘most likely’ scenario showed an increase in tyre life of 41% for the Komatsu 730 trucks and 105% for the CAT 777 trucks if the entire tyre management model is implemented. This would result in a possible annual saving related to tyre usage of R9.2 million. OverviewThe study focused on the tyre life on the main haul fleet at an open pit iron ore mine. The haul fleet consisted of 17 Komatsu 730 (180 t) haul trucks and 12 CAT 777 (90 t) haul trucks.The haulage operation consists entirely of tyre-based haul trucks. Five per cent of the total mining budget is related to tyre costs. Since 2012 there has been a steady decrease in tyre life as measured in operating hours (Figure 1) due to the high percentage of tyres that fail prematurely. In 2014 a total of 41% of all tyres failed prematurely and 61% were classified as ‘worn out’."

Testing of detonators* The Chief Mining Engineer has asked the South African Bureau of Standards to monitor locally manufactured, as well as imported, detonators. This could ensure greater safety in fiery mines.

The concentrations of selected trace elements (As, Cd, Hg, and Pb in run-of-mine (ROM) coal, discard, and coal product were investigated to assess the efficiency of beneficiation in reducing trace element concentrations and ascertain any implications regarding environmental compliance to regulatory frameworks. Samples were collected from a colliery in Mpumalanga Province twice a month for a period of 24 months. The samples were ashed to approximately 0.21 mm, then digested in a mixture of 70% HNO3 and 40% HF and analysed using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Except for Pb, the mean concentration of all elements decreased from the ROM stage to the coal product stage. The order in which trace elements occurred from the highest to lowest throughout the production chain was Pb>As>Hg>Cd. With the exception of Cd, the mean trace element concentrations in the discard were above the total concentration threshold (TCT) set for landfill disposal. The As, Hg, and Cd concentrations in the product were well below the thresholds for all land uses. However, Pb concentrations in the product coal were above legal limits, which is of concern with regard to environmental compliance and the performance and marketability of the product.

Platinum base alloys are very corrosion resistant and have got a high melting point. Similar to Ni-base superalloys, which are used for jet turbines, the hardening effect of the intermetallic L12Pt3Al phase is used to receive a material that is creep resistant at high temperatures. Chromium is added to the alloy system to stabilize the L12phase down to room temperature. With the right amount of nickel the misfit and shape of the precipitates can be controlled. Various alloy compositions have been melted and analysed. With scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) a microstructure can be observed, which is very similar to the one in Ni-base superalloys. To support alloy development with simulations, a thermodynamic database of the Pt-Al-Cr-Ni system is about to be established. The SEM and EDS measurements provide useful input to the thermodynamic optimization. Also many data from the literature have been used to receive the best approximation. The Cr-Pt binary phase diagram has been reassessed and the latest results of thermodynamic modelling are presented.

"Mud rushes are sudden inflows of fine wet ore within underground mines; they can harm people and equipment as well as cause production delays. Block and panel caving mines are prone to mud rushes in their production levels, with mud flowing from the drawpoints. Different mines have developed methods to control drawpoint conditions and thus perform safe ore extraction. The aim of this study is to develop a decision matrix and apply it to samples from drawpoints for the Diablo Regimiento mine, Codelco, El Teniente Division (Chile). The Abrams’s Cone was used to perform slump tests on mud samples and characterize their consistency by setting the saturation degree and packing. The unconfined strength for different saturation degrees and packing was then evaluated. The results show that conditions for fluid response in slump tests correspond to conditions for low strength in unconfined compression tests. We also found the water content value at which the flowing consistency changes from plastic to soft behaviour according to the slump test classification for each sample. This value varied between 12.2% and 16.9%, depending on the sample tested. Finally, a fluid security factor was defined in order to design an extraction pattern for the samples tested, based on the water content. We conclude that a very densely packed ore is not prone to flowing. The flow properties depend strongly on the specific properties of the ore tested, and consequently a specific criterion should be developed for different types of ore at a particular mine. The criterion developed for Diablo Regimiento ore provides critical water content values from 11% to 15%, depending on the ore type. Good management of the risks is important to ensure the security of personnel and infrastructure. Operational risks for the method include rockbursts, air blasts, and mud rushes (Hubert et al. 2000). A mud rush is defined as a sudden inflow of mud from a drawpoint or other underground opening into the mine (Butcher, Joughin, and Stacey, 2000; Butcher, Stacey, and Joughin, 2005). Mud rushes can cause dilution, production delays, and damage to equipment as well as injuries and fatalities. The elements necessary for mud rushes are mud-forming material, disturbances, a discharge point, and water (Butcher, Joughin, and Stacey, 2000). All these elements are present in block/panel caving mines. Mud-forming material comes from ore milled by the caving process; water comes from underground and surface sources. Drawpoints in the production level are discharge points for the mud. Finally, several types of disturbance could trigger the mud rush phenomena: blasting, earthquakes, operation of equipment (Call & Nicholas, Freeport McMoRan, and Hydrologic Consultants, 1998; Jakubec, Clayton, and Guest, 2012), arch collapse above drawbells (Butcher, Joughin, and Stacey, 2000; Butcher, Stacey, and Joughin, 2005; Jakubec, Clayton, and Guest, 2012) and ore drawing (Butcher, Joughin, and Stacey, 2000; Butcher, Stacey, and Joughin, 2005; Call & Nicholas, Freeport McMoRan, and Hydrologic Consultants, 1998; Jakubec, Clayton, and Guest, 2012)."

Compressed air is widely used on South African gold mines. However, due to recent and proposed future electricity tariff increases it is quickly becoming too expensive to produce and use. Boxfront chute systems at ore passes were focused on during this study, and a number of alternative power sources were examined. After comparing primarily costs, and secondarily safety and practicality, of a number of systems based on water and hydraulic oil, a system making use of either air or water was determined to be the most cost effective. A payback time of 8 years was calculated, which will be significantly less taking into account the avoidance of failures due to electricity and water shortages, which would not affect this system due to its ability to swap between either air or water. It was recommended that this system be installed at all boxfront chutes as soon as possible so that the company can begin to benefit from the cost savings.

The Czechoslovak Scientific-Technical Institute has arranged the international conference 'Hornicka Ostrava' for four or five days at the end of October, 1969, as part of the preparation for the international 'Miners' Congress' on deep coalextraction in 1970.
