The South African base metals industry has been one mainly focused on the production of metals or metal compounds from primary ores. This is true for metals such as titanium, vanadium, chrome, manganese, cobalt, nickel, copper, zinc and aluminium. The steel making industry has traditionally used a substantial portion of scrap steel, and could thus be considered to be somewhat of an exception. Secondary sources have played much less of a role, possibly due to at least some of the following factors. Scrap material is often of unknown composition, and thus it requires additional chemical analysis, and possibly special treatment. Tonnages are relatively small, and the incorporation of secondary materials is possibly seen to carry undue risk and inadequate benefit. South African consumers are still not very conservation and recycling conscious, which limits the amount of scrap made available. This attitude might also be expected to influence decision makers in these industries. Finally, pressure from environmentally motivated activists locally has not been unduly large. This landscape has been changing, and is continuing to do so. Various municipal authorities such as those of Pretoria, Johannesburg and Cape Town are reporting increasingly limited landspace for waste (Bondolfi, 2007). There are increasing concerns regarding the leaching of hazardous metals such as chromium, mercury and cadmium from landfill waste, especially electronic and electric wastes ? the so-called eWastes. In more developed countries such as the United States of America and Western Europe the problem of eWaste has grown to the extent where legislation has been enacted, such as the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) legislation of the EU (European Union Directive 2002/96/EC). The 19th and 20th centuries have seen major technological advances. Relevant to this paper is the availability of centrally generated electrical power, telecommunication, entertainment through recorded and transmitted music and images, the growth and pervasive influence of electronics, and the handling of digital data by computers and microprocessors. These developments have placed ever increasing demands on resources for the manufacture of electrical and electronic equipment, as well as on the generation of electrical power. Most of the resources required are non-renewable: copper, steel, aluminium and other metals, various thermoplastic polymers such as PVC (polyvinyl chloride), polyethylene and ABS ( acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene), thermosetting polymers such as epoxies, elastomers such as butyl rubber, glasses and ceramics, and composites such as fibre reinforced plastic (fibreglass). The conservation of non-renewable resources inevitably includes recycling. To a certain extent, recycling of materials locally is well established. A number of base-metal operations would like to increase production to take advantage of the higher metals prices. In general, this higher production should not be achieved with major operating changes. In hydrometallurgical facilities, leaching and pressure leaching represents one area where upfront limitations may be a bottleneck to the capacity of the entire plant. An assessment of the capacity of the leaching tanks and autoclaves was performed using a predictive model within the AweSym flowsheet simulator. The model is described, and the results of the application of the model to a number of different leaching reactors are presented. It is argued that the leaching number, which relates the residence time, particle size and the leaching rate, is of prime importance. Finally it is shown that there are some unexpected catastrophic events in increasing production capacity without a thorough understanding of the leaching operation.

The paper presents the limit equilibrium equations for the analysis of toppling blocks on a rock slope. The safety conditions are assessed by a numeric procedure implemented in an Excel worksheet. The UDEC numerical program was exploited to validate the procedure. A probabilistic model considering the spacing variability of the discontinuities was developed to define the most relevant parameters in this kind of problems. La communication presente les equations d’équilibre limite pour l’analyse de blocs rocheux sur une pente. Les conditions de securité sont évaluées par une procédure numérique en Excel. Le logiciel UDEC a été exploité pour valider cette procedure. Un modèle probabilistique a été developpé pour définir les plus importants paramètres dans ces problèmes. Das Referat stellt die Grenzgleichgewichtsgleichungen für die Analyse von umstrürzenden Blök-ken auf eines Felshang vor. Die Sicherheitsbedingungen werden durch ein numerisches Verfahren mit Excel beurteilt. Um die Gültigkeit des Verfahrens festzustellen, wurde das Programm UDEC benutzt. Ein die Klufabstandsvariabilität berücksichtigendes probabilistisches Modell wurde entwickelt, um die wichtigsten Parameter dieser Probleme zu bestimmen.

A running facebreak ahead of the powered support units occurred on the number 4 seam at Matla Coal’s number 3 shaft (Matla 3) in April and May 2002.Very difficult mining conditions were experienced for a distance of some 150 m in the tailgate and to a lesser extent on the face itself. The paper analyses the main causes for the high stress conditions leading to the facebreak, namely, the existence of a >20 m dolerite sill close to surface and the effect of stopping longwalling on the overlying 5 seam. Difficulties experienced during the facebreak are discussed, including, pillar and roof collapses in the tailgate, high stress areas ahead of the face causing roof and sidewall stability problems, flushing of broken rock into the face area at the tailgate, secondary mid-face breaks, and the availability of critical support units. Successful rock engineering interventions and learning points were that, a goaf angle of 14.6° was found to be more realistic than the previously used 20 to 25° in predicting dolerite sill behaviour in this area, pre-split blasting of the sill significantly reduced stress on the face and tailgate allowing re-support work to proceed, varying pillar support types were analysed and rated, the need to always have a ground control “First Aid” kit available was recognised and a strategy for subsequent panels beneath the sill was developed. Numerous support units were used and the performance of the more suitable types is briefly discussed. Background The CSIR Division of Mining Technology assumed responsibility for the operations of the Hoist Rope and Mechanical Test Laboratories at Cottesloe in April 1999. The laboratories were previously the responsibility of the CSIR’s Division of Manufacturing and Materials Technology, before which they fell under the National Mechanical Engineering Research Institute (also of CSIR). As the focus of this conference is on safety in mines research institutes, it was thought appropriate that this paper should review some of the activities at Cottesloe and its role in supporting mine safety strategies.

Dense medium separation (DMS) is critical to the operation of coal and diamond beneficiation plants. It is also utilised in iron ore, manganese, chromite and andalusite beneficiation as well as pre-concentration for platinum-bearing UG2 ore. Gravity concentration plays an important role in the processing of diamonds, coal, gold, platinum, titanium minerals, zircon, chromite, iron ore and manganese. The DMS and Gravity Concentration operations and technology in South Africa conference will focus on the operation of DMS and Gravity Concentration circuits in the South African Mining Industry. The current status of the technologies and equipment employed will be presented as well as future developments. The conference was set up to showcase South African DMS and Gravity Concentration operations and provide a forum where operators, technology and equipment suppliers can engage in knowledge sharing. The papers cover a wide spectrum of topics, including descriptions of operations, optimisation projects, new capital projects, equipment applications, process monitoring and process selection. Most commodities and unit processes associated with DMS and Gravity Concentration are covered. The conference venue was selected to be the CSIR Convention Centre in Pretoria. The CSIR has contributed to DMS research in South Africa and it is located not far from many coal, diamond, gold, platinum and chrome mines that extensively utilise DMS and Gravity Concentration in their beneficiation plants. I believe that the papers and presentations submitted for this conference will provide a valuable future reference for DMS and Gravity Concentration, thus making the work of all the contributors to this conference highly rewarding and worthwhile.

"SynopsisSouth Africa recently announced a resurgence in its commercial nuclear power programme. The implications for the development of the necessary high-level manpower within South Africa’s tertiary educational system and its national research and development (R&D) capacity in materials science and engineering, as well as in other engineering disciplines, are placed into perspective. An organized national process of developing this manpower by moving away from the previously high-risk and costly ’large programmes’ to rather a selection of ‘small and better’ research projects and a redefinition of what constitutes ‘nuclear materials’ are proposed as parts of this strategy.IntroductionSince 2008, and more particularly in 2014/2015, South Africa has woken up to the fact that significant steps need to be taken to ensure sufficient electricity generating capacity for the future, even beyond the coal-fired stations at Medupi and Kusile currently under construction. It is, therefore, encouraging to see some active large-scale wind farms in the Eastern Cape near Jeffrey’s Bay, in the Couga area, and others in the Western Cape already in operation. In addition, many solar energy projects are also progressing from the small localized scale to larger programmes in the Northern Cape, which may contribute some capacity on a national basis. South Africa needs to tap into its renewable resources of wind and solar much more, but will these projects solve the country’s long-term industrial needs? Unfortunately not. One cannot run mines and trains on solar cells. Industry needs reliable baseload capacity, and with very limited easily accessible hydrocapacity this leaves really only coal, possibly natural gas, and nuclear power as options. South Africa’s current over-reliance of about 90% on coal–fired power, however, places it in an internationally vulnerable position, and diversification into a more equitable energy mix should be a national priority for the medium to long term. South Africa cannot significant climate change confronting the human race, as the IPCC cautioned in 2013, and will have to adjust its future energy reliance to a more balanced combination of sources."

This paper summarises a behavioural safety project undertaken in seven quarries in the UK in order to investigate its applicability as a means of raising the standards of health and safety in the UK quarrying industry. A behavioural safety methodology was developed and trialled at two quarry sites in the UK. During the study the number of unsafe acts and minor accidents had decreased and at one of the quarries there was a 95% reduction in the number of working days lost. It was then introduced at a further five sites of varying sizes and within this focused specifically on lone workers as well as behaviours that affected quality and environmental issues. Positive improvements were noted in most of these operations. The project also looked at the effectiveness of health and safety performance indicators. Here, the common lead and trailing indicators for both safety and health that are commonly used by industry were identified. In consultation with the UK quarrying industry these were then used to identify specific performance measurement criteria that can be used by the quarrying sector to measure performance. Following on from this a quarry specific health and safety management system specification was developed for large and small quarries.

The rebound phenomenon, which occurs during rockfalls when a rock block impacts with a slope surface, is influenced by several parameters related not only to the slope material but also to the block and the kinematics. The paper presents a small-scale testing campaign undertaken at the LMR (EPFL) to better understand and quantify the bouncing of blocks on granular slopes. The influence of some factors related to the ground material, the block and the kinematics is examined. Bei Steinschlägen wird die Flugbahn eines stürzenden Felsbrockens maßgeblich durch den Abprall vom Hang bestimmt. Der Rückprall hängt von verschiedenen Parametern ab, wobei nicht nur das Hangmaterial sondern auch Blockeigenschaften und Kinematik eine große Rolle spielen. Zum besseren Verständnis dieses Phänomens und seiner Quantifizierung werden am LMR (EPFL) kleinmaßstäbliche Versuchskampagnen auf granulären Materialien durchgeführt. Der vorliegende Artikel stellt die Versuche vor und untersucht den Einfluss verschiedener Boden-, Block- und kinematischer Parameter. Le phénomène de rebond qui se présente lors de l’impact d’un bloc rocheux sur la surface d’un versant dépend non seulement des caractéristiques du terrain, mais aussi de facteurs relatifs au bloc et à la cinématique. L’article présente une campagne d’essais sur modèle réduit entreprise au LMR (EPFL) afin de mieux comprendre et quantifier l’impact de blocs sur des matériaux granulaires. L’influence de divers paramètres relatifs au sol, au bloc et à la cinématique est mise en évidence.

Ores are becoming extremely variable with mineralogy and hardness disturbing the grinding and flotation circuits. The current grinding and flotation sensors provide large amounts of data for process optimisation. Adding the right context and operational events augments operational knowledge for proactive actions to improve the performance of the grinding and flotation circuits. A data-driven strategy is needed to enable operations, maintenance, and business personnel to quickly and easily take corrective action when abnormal conditions occur. A digital plant template transforms data into operational insights in real-time. It uncovers the hidden, idle and downtime losses. By measuring and managing these unproductive times, people find new ways of avoiding them, improving the profitability of the plant. The information created by the real time analytics enables the calculation of recovery in real time and develops predictive analytics models to find the best operating condition based on the type of ore currently mined. The creation of new workflows and collaboration between mining and concentrator plant and the enterprise, including services providers, are enabled. A grade recovery model is used to identify the best operating conditions in real-time. An optimal Gaudin size distribution shape is used to find the grinding operating conditions that optimise the metal recovery in the rougher sections of the mineral processing plant. Sensors in the flotation circuits enable estimation of metal recovery and determine the optimal froth depth and aeration profiles, using an industrial air holdup flotation model. The implementation of a recovery/grind strategy with industrial examples in non-ferrous metal concentrator is presented in the paper. For many years the concept of life cycle costing (LCC) was promoted for decision making in corrosion protection systems. Nevertheless, the application of LCC was limited. Input data was often sourced from suppliers and met with scepticism. As a result final analysis was often insufficiently rigorous to meet the needs of Project Managers in sound decision making. The need for expediency often resulted in non-optimal corrosion protection system specifications. With improved communications and the global reach of industries, case history data, based upon actual performance has been able to provide input to substantiate decision making. However, today?s focus upon sustainability whereby environmental, economic and even social aspects enter into decision making has extended LCC into Life Cost Analysis (LCA). In an LCA analysis energy and environmental inputs into systems are compared as part of an overall assessment. The development of Agenda 21 at the Rio summit of 1992 has challenged the countries of the world to look at sustainable development in every economic activity. This ranges from construction to mining to electricity production to automotive production, use and disposal. The protection of buildings, infrastructure and transport systems is part of the needs of sustainable development. Zinc based corrosion protection has been an important part of the arsenal of the corrosion protection industry. This paper will highlight the use of LCC and the development of LCA with reference to the use of zinc based protection systems in a number of important industries.

"This paper provides a progress update on three tapblock monitoring technologies that Hatch has been developing with our clients for non-ferrous smelting furnaces.The Tapblock Diagnostic System (TDS) is an advanced on-line monitoring system that uses temperature data along with embedded thermal model results to evaluate the condition of a tapblock over its campaign life. Hatch recently installed a second Tapblock Diagnostic System, some details of which are provided in this paper.The Tap-hole Acoustic Monitoring (TAM) system is installed on water-cooled copper tapblocks and uses the noise from the tapping channel to provide a qualitative indication of wear and deterioration of the tapping channel refractory. In addition, TAM can be used to monitor drilling and lancing performance, and potentially could also be used in the future as a guide for automatic drilling and lancing systems (Sadri et al., 2008).The third technology is the use of fibre optic sensors to measure temperature on the hot face and in the tapping channel of a tapblock. Fibre optic technology allows installation of numerous sensors in key locations where they are very sensitive to tapblock condition and also provide more extensive spatial coverage than is possible with traditional instruments. This paper provides an update on our efforts to address issues with premature failure of the sensor cables due to corrosion, and also converting the vast amount of data from the sensor cable into information that can be used by furnace operators."

A common problem encountered in the mineral sands industry is that the mineralogical measurements used in defining the resource are not readily converted to metallurgical recoveries, which are used to predict the quantity of the final products. The problem stems from the different objectives of the exploration and metallurgical assessment programmes, and is often compounded by the use of different laboratory techniques and mineral definitions. Common mistakes include the misapplication of routine analysis, incorrect interpretation of mineral recovery, the confusion of mineral recovery with product yield and inconsistent definition of the same mineral. Experience has shown that unless these potential mistakes are identified, the measurement techniques used during exploration and metallurgical assessment are not compatible, often resulting in large errors in the prediction of mineral production. There are no easy solutions to the problem, as there is no universal assay technique which can cost effectively characterize all the mineral sands resources. The recommended course of action will therefore require several iterations to optimize the assay technique to suit the resource. Fundamental to the success of the measurement technique is the understanding of the mineralogy, its behaviour during mineral processing and the quality requirements for the final products.

Copper and cobalt are generally electro-won from their aqueous sulphate solutions. After optimised leaching of their ores, concentrates or calcine bearing minerals, the leachate is clarified and suitably purified prior to the electrolytic extraction of the metal of pursuit (Pearcy, 2006). Solvent extraction (SX) using appropriate organic solvents and ion exchange (IX) with relevant resins are known purification processes used for copper and cobalt recovery (Stanely, 1970).As zeolites in general and natural zeolites in particular, demonstrate ion exchange properties (Korkuna et al., 2005), an attempt has been made to use Southern African natural clinoptilolite in the recovery of copper and cobalt from their aqueous sulphate solutions. Initially, synthetic Co and Cu solutions were prepared. Preceded by laboratory ore leachate, plant solutions are to be used. AAS, XRF, XRD, Mossbauer spectroscopy and BET were characterization techniques used. Natural clinoptilolite was used as-received as well as acid activated; and cobalt and copper extractions were performed at room temperature.

This paper focuses on the role of the coal mine surveyor at the start of the 21st century. It demonstrates that surveyors must look beyond their legal appointment and pursue opportunities to add value at an operational or corporate level of the company. It also exposes the shortfall of statutory appointments in defining the surveyor?s role in terms of key business drivers of the company. One such an opportunity is the potential role of the surveyor in mineral accounting and quality assurance to meet mine requirements, market specifications and standards pertaining to corporate governance and reporting. Finally, some thoughts are expressed on what can be done to elevate current practice to best practice and how to achieve this goal
