As part of its investigation of methods of increasing the efficiency of fuel resources, the Bureau of Mines is continuing the study of the general problems involved in the economic use of fuels in gas pro- ducers that were carried on by the technologic branch of the United States Geological Survey. In the course of this study many inci- dental problems of prime importance have demanded consideration. Among them is the determination, under practically constant con- ditions, of the duration of gas-producer tests necessary to reduce the possible error to a minimum. A discussion of this proper length of test period forms the first part of this bulletin. An attempt to dispel some of the uncertainties that arise in an investigation or to account for some of the minor phenomena often necessitates a systematic and careful study of certain chemical, ther- modynamic, or physical laws, or a combination of these, which in turn may result in information or conclusions of great value. Fur- thermore, seemingly unimportant observations often prove to bear directly upon the design, construction, or manipulation of the machine under test. In attempts to improve the gas producer considerable attention has been given by manufacturers to such questions as fixing or isolating the combustible components of the tar, utilizing the waste heat of the producer for the generation of the steam required by the plant, apply- ing the suction principle to bituminous coal and other tarry fuels, and many allied subjects. Little study, apparently, has been given to the physical-chemical conditions most suitable to the formation of hydro- gen and of carbon monoxide, with a view to regulating the percentages of these gases in generators using fuels other than anthracite coal or charcoal. An attempt was made to introduce such investigations when the operations of the government coal-testing plant began at the Louisi- ana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis in 1904, but owing to adverse conditions these problems were abandoned until the plant was trans- ferred to Norfolk in 1907. The delay in beginning this line of inves- tigations, together with the short testing season at Norfolk, limit the second part of this report to preliminary physical-chemical studies, which, however, were sufficiently significant to warrant careful ex- amination pending more complete researches, which are being carried on at the station located in Pittsburg.

In 1904 the Government began a series of fuel-testing investiga- tions at its fuel-testing plant at St. Louis, Mo. These investigations, which were placed under the supervision of the United States Geo- logical Survey, included chemical analyses, steaming tests, gas- producer tests, briquetting tests, coking tests, and washing tests of samples collected from the various coal fields of the country. The specific purpose of the investigations was to analyze and test the coals and lignites in the United States, in order to deternime their fuel values and the most efficient methods of utilizing them for different purposes. Part of the fuel-testing plant, including the briquetting equipment, was moved to Norfolk, Va., in 1907, and the fuel-testing investiga- tions were made one of the divisions of the technologic branch of the Geological Survey. In 1908, after the close of the Jamestown Exposition, most of the fuel-testing equipment was removed to its present location at the Pittsburgh experiment station, Fortieth and Butler Streets, Pittsburgh, Pa. In 1910, an act of Congress, effective July 1, established the Bureau of Mines in the Department of the Interior and authorized the transfer to this bureau of the fuel-testing investigations that had been carried on by the technologic branch. Bulletins presenting the results of various inquiries and investiga- tions relating to briquetting have been published by the Geological Survey and the Bureau of Mines. Identity the difficulties of establishing vegetation on mining-related wastes resulting from adverse chemical, physical, and biological properties; describe the ecological and soil factors affecting the relationship between mycorrhizal fungi (soil microorganisms) and plants; and evaluate the feasibility of establishing vegetation on mine waste by introducing mycorrhizae. Problems in Revegetation Successfully using vegetation to stabilize a situ disturbed by mining-related activities depends on knowing the chemical, physical, and biological characteristics of the site prior to, or at the time of, stabilization. The primary objectives of mine land reclamation are to minimize environmental degradation and to facilitate the re-establishment of a functional plant-soil system. Mining disturbances can significantly alter the physical, chem¬ical, and biological characteristic of a site, thus affecting plant establishment, survival, and growth. The physical disturbance caused by the removal and replacement of soil and overburden, together with the waste material from ore processing, affect the chemical, physical, and biological process within the disturbed soil or waste. Additionally, variability in soil properties results from differences in climate, topography, vegetation, and parent material of the site.

Approach A brattice curtain (gob curtain) Is hung between shield #1 and the rib in the headgate entry forcing the ventilating air stream to make the 90° turn and stay on the face side of the shields rather than leaking into the gob. How It Works Air leakage is greatest in the headgate area because the gob behind the first few shields remains open due to the roof bolts in the headgate entry. In addition to the open gob, there is a large gap between shield #1 and the rib. Prevention of air leakage behind the shields is accomplished by the Installation of a curtain between the first shield and the rib extending from the roof to the bottom. The curtain Is advanced with the shield line each pass and is helpful In maintaining a sufficient air quantity along the face. The biggest Improvement due to this curtain is seen in the first 25-30 shields where the Increased air volume lowers dust concentrations through dilution.

Miners, like everyone else, must be able to see well in order to work well. But simply hauling bigger and brighter lights into the mines does not necessarily produce better mine illumination. This chapter tells why. Increasing the power of the light source can create problems of portability, glare, adaptation and contrast. This chapter also discusses some ways to increase illumination by Improving the reflectability of walls, roofs and other exposed surfaces. In Chapter IV you learned that the "brightness" of a room or work area was really a matter of how much light was reflected from the walls, roof, and other surfaces. Therefore, if you want to Improve visibility you should increase the amount of reflected illumination. O HOW DOES ONE DO THAT? One way of Increasing reflected illumination would be to increase the power of the light source.

6.1 Summary This report deals with the investigation carried out to select, test, and implement a method of evaluating coal deposits and reserves. Cognizance is taken of the inherent characteristics of coal and the legislation covering aspects of health, safety, environment, and ecology applicable to the coal mining industry. Further, the method is computerized and provides information that is meaningful and readily available to other programs and sub¬systems within the concept of the Master Design Simulator. The Geology and Reserves Sub-system interface with the total system is provided by a geological data library which is structured to hold and make accessible all the data required by the system. The output from the program is accurate and useful to users with a wide variety of computer experience, knowledge, hardware and storage capacity. The sub-system is designed to function as a separate unit or an integral part of the total system and, there¬fore, an interface to or with the system has been established. The danger from coal dust in mines has been thoroughly demon- strated by experiment, and consequently the study of the inflam- mability of coal dust suspended in air, that is, the readiness with which a cloud of coal dust inflames, is of decided importance to those engaged in coal mining. Much knowledge has been gained from the work done in the large galleries constructed at official and semiofficial stations in this country and abroad, but the study of the coal-dust problem in these galleries requires so much time and is so costly that there is need of a reliable laboratory method for obtaining a classi- fication of the great variety of dusts that occur in mines. The investigation described in this paper was an attempt to devise such a method. It was a preliminary investigation, and work in the same direction is being continued by the Bureau of Mines. As Mr. Frazer has severed his connection with the bureau, it is deemed advisable to publish the results of his study substantially as he prepared them, with little attempt to draw conclusions or to show the bearing of the results on other studies now in progress. The results of these studies and a full discussion of the significance of the laboratory investiga- tions will be published in future reports of the Bureau of Mines. The reader should remember that any laboratory method, since it involves conditions that differ so greatly from those of actual mining, should be thoroughly tested, and the results obtained by it should be confirmed by experiments conducted on a scale simulating mining conditions before final conclusions are drawn. The need of a laboratory method has long been felt, and several investigators have devised apparatus and methods. The work done by Vital, Holtzwart and Von Meyer, Bedson and Widdas, Le Chate- lier, and that of the British Coal Dust Commission is of great interest in this connection. An experiment is described in which hollow inclusion cells (HICells) were used to measure stress in a jointed rock mass during drift development at the Stillwater Mine, Nye, MT, USA. Two HICells were installed in the footwall approximately two drift widths ahead of the face. One HICell was over cored and then immediately tested in a biaxial chamber. The other HICell was left in place and monitored as the drift was excavated in three advances, each one-half the width of the drift. Strains were recorded hourly by a datalogger. Results show that there was little stress change during the first and second drift advances, but that a large stress change occurred after the third advance. The measurements also showed that the in situ principal stress directions lined up with regional geologic structures. Stress changes during face advance were likely caused by deformation along localized joint sets and inelastic deformation near the face.

Coal is found in the northeast comer of Georgia, in Dade, Chattooga, Walker, and Floyd Counties. Five seams, which underlie all of Lookout, Sand, and Pigeon Mountains, have produced most of the coal mined in the state. Representative analyses of Georgia coals show that they are typically low sulfur (less than one to one percent), low-to-medium volatile, bituminous deposits. Although there is no active mining in the state, reclamation continues on several permitted areas. In 1983 the State of Georgia relinquished primacy to the Office of Surface Mining. Since that time permits have been issued and mining completed. All the sites are presently in the process of bond release.

This report is issued by the Bureau of Mines as one of a series dealing with methods of increasing safety and efficiency in mining operations. It is intended purely as a preliminary statement of the present development of hydraulic mine filling as conducted in the anthracite region of Pennsylvania. A discussion of different methods, their variations and modifications, as well as their probable extension as a result of amplified tests of the various roof-supporting materials, will be presented in a future bulletin. The history of the development of the anthracite-mining industry, from the time when the Indian tribes in the Wyoming and Lacka- wanna Valleys first discovered the existence of "stone coal," on through subsequent events-the purchase of lands containing enor- mous deposits of coal for insignificant sums of money, the develop- ment of the first mine, the formation of the first company, the build- ing of canals and railroads-up to the present time when the industry has become of such tremendous importance to the prosperity of north- eastern Pennsylvania and of the Nation itself, is intersprinkled with romance, tragedy, and pathos. The great economic lessons to be learned from a study of mining operations in the anthracite region suggest to the person interested in the efficient utilization of natural resources the need of applying such methods as will make possible the conservation to posterity of this invaluable deposit of coal that has resulted from the operation of the processes of nature during probably hundreds of millions of years. It is the opinion of many prominent mining men familiar with mining operations in the United States and abroad that under certain conditions the most practical way of preventing loss of unmined coal in pillars and of protecting surface property from damage by sub- sidence is by filling the workings with refuse material. This bulletin aims to present a general discussion of hydraulic mine filling, its origin, development, and practicability in anthracite mining.

Miners' nystagmus is the result of a peculiar form of eyestrain, which often results in impairment of vision and a consequent diminu- tion of the wage-earning capacity of the workman. Historically it has been pointed out by Shufflebotham that "This disease was first recognized by Gillett, of Sheffield, about 1854, although no case was mentioned in medical literature until 1861, when the symptoms were described by De Conde, a Belgian physician. Cases were reported by Pepp Müller as early as 1860, by Von Graefe in 1873, and by Bell Taylor, of Nottingham, and by Nieden in 1874. In this country (England) we are indebted to a very large extent to the observations and writings of the late Simeon Snell and for his pioneer work on this many-sided disease; in France Dransart occupies a similar position." In the treatise on "The Effects of Arts, Trades, and Professions," by C. Turner Thackrah, published in London in 1832, it is stated that- The complexion of the colliers, even after the removal of the dirt, is generally sallow and unhealthy. Their eyes, from the swelling of the lids, appear small, are affected with chronic inflammation and intolerant of full light. * Sickness and vomiting sometimes affect persons at their commencing the employ; and many, after a few years' trial, are obliged, by the injury which their health has sustained, and especially by the weakness of their eyes, to leave the mine. According to Greer, an authority on industrial diseases and acci- dents, miners' nystagmus occurs in 5 per cent of all miners, but it is quite probable that the reference is to European coal miners rather than to men employed in all branches of the mineral industry. According to the same authority, miners' nystagmus "is associated with a twitching of the eyelids and with considerable diminution of the range of movement of the eyes, and is particularly liable to occur in patients whose vision is subnormal owing to errors of refraction, especially astigmatism. It causes much inconvenience to those suf- fering from it and prevents them from following their usual occupa- tion as, owing to the movements of the eyes, everything at which they look appears to be in a state of perpetual motion, and in conse-

GLOSSARY TERM DEFINITION ACCOMODATION The process by-which the eye changes focus from one distance to another. ADAPTATION The process by which the retina adjusts-to more or less light then it was exposed to during an immediately preceding period. Also involved, to a lesser degress, is the change in the size of the pupil which regulates the amount of light entering the eye. Adaptation results in a change in the sensitivity of the eye to light. CENTRAL VISION (FOVEAL) The seeing of objects in the central or foveal part of the visual field. It is approximately two degrees in diameter and permits seeing much finer detail than does peripheral vision. DIRECT GLARE The effect of brightness or brightness differences within the visual field sufficiently high to cause annoyance, discomfort, or loss in visual performance. FOOT CANDLE A measure of the amount of light falling onto a surface. FOOT LAMBERT A measure of the amount of light that is being reflected by a surface. GLARE The effect of brightness or differences in brightness within the visual field sufficiently high to cause annoyance, discomfort, or loss in visual performance. LAMP A generic term for a man-made source of light. By extension, the term is also used to denote sources that radiate in regions of spectrom adjacent to the visible.

The following experimental hypothesis was to be tested: Null Hypothesis: the coefficients a = 0 J Alternate Hypothesis: One or more of the coefficients a 0 J Correlation and Regression To establish the alternate hypothesis and to test how well the proposed model fits the data, the conventional statistical techniques of correlation analysis and multiple linear regression analysis were used. Additionally, factor analysis was employed to investigate the dependency relationships in the data. Correlation and linear regression are well established statistical procedures in science and engineering. References on these procedures include Spiegel (1961), Anderson (1963), and Draper and Smith (1966). A simple example is stated here. If N observations are made of two variables, x and y, and it is desired to test this data to see if a linear relationship exists, then a model of the form: Y = a0 + a 1 x A-2 is proposed. [The meaning of the term "bauxite' has always been somewhat vague and indefinite, and the term has been used in various applications to denote sometimes a rock, sometimes a mineral, but more frequently an ore. It seems logical to think of bauxite as an ore, however, because a very large part (probably at least 85 per cent) of the entire world's production of bauxite is at present being used as a source of aluminum and aluminum chemicals. In the United States there are two districts that, produce bauxite - the Arkansas district and the Alabama-Georgia-Tennessee-Mississippi district. The deposits in Mississippi have been discovered recently and are riot as yet productive but it seems reasonable to consider them as apart of the-district hat includes the deposits of Alabama, Georgia, and Tennessee. The, two districts are often referred to as the Arkansas field and the Appalachian field. Of these two the Arkansas field has been by far the largest producer, and at present over 90 per cent of the bauxite production of they United States comes from the Arkansas field. The bauxite industry in the Appalachian field had its beginning in 1889, and since that time the total production of the states of Alabama, Georgia, and Tennessee has been, nearly a million tons. The production of bauxite in this field has languished in the last five, or six, years, and In 1927 its production was only about 14,000 tons, according to Harder4. The recent decrease in production is due mainly to the fact that many .of the known deposits of commercial-grade ore have become exhausted. There are, however, considerable quantities of low-grade bauxite in the Appalachian field, but these have not been available because there has been no satisfactory way of concentrating low-grade bauxite. The quantity, of low-grade material in the Appalachian field is probably, fully as large as the tonnage of commercial ore which the field has already produced.]

The goal of the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory's training research is to explore the relationship between valid instruction and improved worker performance. Studies summarized in this paper include: (a) the development and assessment of training techniques that strengthen miners' ability to act competently in emergencies; (b) investigations of classroom simulations that enhance the perceptual, judgment and decision making skills of workers confronted with mine hazards; and (c) field studies of the linkages between financial investments in occupation at skills training and measurable outcomes.' The authors maintain that better ties between training and performance will aid long-term human resource development. The best way to establish this connection is through the use of objective and reliable data.

"In accident prevention, a study of statistical data is necessary to determine primary causes of accidents to devise means to eliminate causes at the original sources. Explosions in coal mines of the United States during the 10 years ending December 31, 1931, ranked third in the causes of fatal accidents; they constituted 16.2 per cent of all fatal accidents in bituminous mines and 8.4 per cent of all fatal accidents in anthracite mines. A study of coal-mine explosions in Pennsylvania, with approximately 160,000 men employed in anthracite mines and about 145,000 in bituminous mines or about 205,000 out of -the approximately 525,000 men employed in all coal mines of the United States, should give information of value to all persons endeavoring to reduce or eliminate coal-mine explosions. This circular reviews explosions of gas or dust or of both in the coal mines of Pennsylvania to show the hazard of gas and dust, to point out the influence of certain factors in causing explosions, and to emphasize the efficacy of explosion-preventive measures.The data published annually by the State Department of Mines and of the United States Bureau of Mines were used in compiling the tables of explosions. Through the cooperation of W. H. Glasgow, secretary, Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, and his assistants, many doubtful cases were clarified, so that as far as recorded the history is comparatively complete. Figures used in compiling some of the tables were furnished by W. W. Adams, chief statistician, demographical division, United States Bureau of Mines.Anthracite in the Wyoming Basin of Pennsylvania was used locally by gunsmiths in 1755, by blacksmiths in 1769, and as domestic fuel in 1808.Mining and shipments developed slowly between 1806 and 1812, but more rapidly after that.Early mining along the outcrops gave essentially no trouble from gas, but by 1870, when State inspection was established, explosions were frequent; ventilation was crude and accumulations of gas were generally ""brushed"" or burned out.Table 1 lists 1,232 ignitions and explosions of gas in anthracite mines from 1870 to 1932, inclusive, every one of which was accompanied by loss of life. Some details are given of 110 representative cases in which five or more lives were lost or in which it appeared that some violence was present.During the period 1870 to 1932, inclusive, gas explosions caused 2,213 fatalities, or an average of about two deaths for each ignition or explosion. Records are not available as to the number injured in these and in other explosions where no deaths occurred, but from a study of explosion reports it appears probable that the number injured exceeds the number killed. In the 110 cases described, 599 were killed and 294 were injured. As shown in Table 2, fatalities from gas explosions averaged 8.3 percent of the total fatalities in Pennsylvania anthracite mines from 1870 to 1931, varying from 6.0 percent in 1931 to 13.1 percent in 1927."

Experimental modifications have been made by the Bureau of Mines on standard pneumatic rock drills to reduce the noise of the air exhaust, drill steel resonance noise, and noise radiated by the drill body. A close-fitting case and muffler around the drill body, consisting of a metallic honeycomb skeleton filled with viscoelastic absorber on the inside and a durable outer shell, provide both exhaust and drill body noise muff ling and absorption. Drill steel resonance noise is reduced by a constrained-layer treatment consisting of a tubular metal cover bonded to the ouside of the sod by a viscoelastic filler. Damping alloy components have been developed to reduce metallic resonance noise. Combined, these modifications have reduced the drilling noise level in granite from 115 dbA to 97 dbA. Data are presented on the individual and combined effects of these modifications on drilling noise and performance.
