This report has presented a literature review of explosion proof¬ing of coal mine electrical equipment. The international "state-of¬the-art" is an extremely difficult definition to quantify but, from the preceding paragraphs, it is evident the international community be¬lieves that it is represented by the International Electrotechnical Commission's Publications. Five questions were set forth during the beginning of this report. Each will be evaluated in light of the preceding discussion. 1. Can Schedule 2G specifications on explosion-proof containers be substantiated? Literature was found in the three main problem areas, surface temperature, mechanical strength, and explosion transmission, to determine this. Surface temperature requirements are adequate except for equipment that can normally overload, and the required intern¬al pressure does afford some margin of safety. However, in terms of safety, gap dimensions are about ten times smaller than that needed. 2. Is it possible to replace the Schedule's design requirements with performance specifications? Two primary areas were determined as mechanical strength and explosion transmission. As was mentioned, for present flange and gap standards, the 150 psig requirement is adequate. Furthermore, it is the authors' opinion that the level cannot be re¬duced if the present gap requirements are retained. The Schedule now requires that 16 tests be run, but the literature suggests that only from three to six examinations are necessary. Surface areas of two synthetic and three natural consolidated porous samples were obtained by the Orr low-pressure permeametry technique. The results suggest that the Orr technique is a useful substitute for the low-temperature gas adsorption (BET) method for determining the surface area of rock samples. It was more rapid than the BET method, and the surface-area values obtained were larger but agreed better with BET values than values calculated from the Kozeny-Carman equation. Efforts were unsuccessful to demonstrate the influence of channel-size distribution on pressure-flow rate curves by means of experimental data and a parallel channel model.

Development of the Rail-Haulage Sub-assembly for the Production Sub-system (UGMHS)* required the use of ,a newly formulated model in order to best satisfy the requirements. Many of the ideas of the former single-stage rail simulator included in the original version of UGMHS have been used, together with the results of experience gained in applying the earlier model to a variety of operating situations (Sanford, 1969). The sub-assembly is developed as an independent system and, as such, can be used to analyze track systems using production distri¬butions as data input. In addition, since this model is designed to replace the original sub-assembly in UGMHS, the linking procedure is identical with respect to bi-directional information flow. The flow of coal from production sections, for example, fills the mine cars, but a condition of "out of empties" or "full of loaded" at a loading station will shut down inby production sections. A requirements analysis was conducted to determine specifically how the model could best serve the user. Operating management had the largest input in developing the following requirements for the Rail Sub-assembly: a) data input in mixed narrative - numeric form to permit user identification of the input variables; b) a user option to extract several ranges of detail in model output, i.e., an average shift summary of minimum retrieval

A fifth successive record in fuel efficiency was established by the petroleum-refining industry in 1937, when the average heat requirement per barrel of crude oil run to stills was 554,000 B. t. u. compared with 597,000 B. t. u. in 1936. These amounts represent roughly the heat obtainable from a tenth of a barrel of fuel oil (see fig. 1). Innumerable factors can influence heat consumption at refineries, but only a few are important enough to be subject to statistical measurement. Foremost of these is the ratio of runs to capacity, it being generally recognized that because the fuel demands for other than stills are comparatively inelastic, total heat requirements do not increase in direct proportion to crude runs. Thus, in 1937, crude runs of 1,183,440,000 barrels were 11 percent higher than in 1930; the average operating ratio was 83 percent compared with 79 percent in 1936; but the total heat requirement increased only 4 percent, or from 638,149 billion B. t. u. in 1936 to 663,966 billion B. t. u. in 1937.

To improve a miner's chance of survival during an emergency by providing immediately avail-able breathable air and protection from toxic gases until a longer-duration breathing apparatus, stored nearby, can be reached. Approach: A belt-carried apparatus which can provide a closed-circuit atmosphere for ten minutes breathing has been developed under a Bureau of Mines contract. How It Works: Water vapor and carbon dioxide in the user's exhaled breath are removed, and oxygen is supplied, by chemical reactions. When the user exhales into the mouthpiece, water vapor in his breath reacts with potassium superoxide (KO2) stored In the canister to produce oxygen. The other product of this reaction (KOH) reacts with carbon dioxide and removes it from the air. The oxygen-enriched air then flows from the canister into two breathing bags. When user inhales through the mouth, that air is drawn out of the bags, makes a second pass through the chemical-containing canister, and flows into the mouthpiece tube. A nose clip is worn to seal off the nasal passages.

The purpose of this work was to Investigate the rate at which coal is delivered from the underground working face by gathering arm type loaders as employed on continuous mining machines, to identify the factors - geometrical , geological, mechanical, or procedural - which affect the delivery rate, and to develop quantitative rate-descriptive equations for the loading function. The mathematical techniques employed were factor analysis and multiple linear regression. It was determined that the coal-cutting function of the continuous mining machine is the factor that primarily Influences the loading function The geometrical factors -the dimensions of the work area In relation to the dimensions of the mining machine -were the factors of secondary influence. Fifty-five percent of the experimental variation in the loading function was explained in terms of the six most prominent Independent variables. It is expected that this work will be useful In operations-research studies as applied to underground coal mining, and with refinement will enable mine planners to select equipment based on the operating characteristics of the equipment and the mining conditions.

The Federal Bureau of Mines investigated dust suppression obtained with three different water-spray nozzle systems during underground continuous coal mining at the face. The nozzles were the "regular" nozzle normally used by the mine, and high-efficiency and low-efficiency nozzles selected on the basis of an airborne capture theory of respirable dust by spray drops. The high-efficiency nozzle used one-third less water than the others throughout the testing. Results depended on the type of cutting operation at the face. The sump-downshear operation appeared to involve a significant amount of capture of airborne respirable dust. The same amount of dust was measured when using the high-efficiency and regular nozzles. The dust levels when using the high-efficiency nozzle were about 20 pct less than those measured when using the low-efficiency nozzle. The sump-upshear operation seemed to involve a predominance of other aspects of dust suppression, such as impaction of spray drops onto the face. Compared with the downshear operation, there was a significant reduction in dust levels for a total face operation when using the regular nozzle; dust levels when using the regular nozzle were about 15 pct lower than those measured when using the high-efficiency nozzle.

The Bureau of Mines has determined the electrochemical rate of anodic dissolution of vanadium metal in a VC12-VC13-NaC1 electrolyte at 860' C for the purpose of elucidating the reaction mechanism. Rate measurements were carried out with the help of specially designed equipment capable of continuously recording the weight loss experienced by a cylindrical vanadium anode immersed in the molten salt electrolyte while a constant current is maintained through it. The rate is expressed as a function of current density and VC13 concentration, and the reaction is interpreted in terms of an adsorption mechanism. Multiple regression analysis of the data gave the following rate equation: Rate x 104 (g.cm-2.sec-1) = -0.38 + 2.64 current density (amp-cm-2) + 0.69 log, (mole-percent VC13).

Cement kiln dust (CKD) is a waste product generated at the rate of 4 to 12 million tons per year in the United States. The dust has considerable resource potential as a neutralizer for coal mine waste effluents and as a lime substitute in the agriculture and construction industries. However, little information has been published on the composition and characteristics of CKD, and a concern arose over the potential environmental effects of the waste when an analysis of a single sample from West Germany revealed lead and zinc concentrations of 5,620 µg/g and 16,200 µg/g, respectively. General An important part of any mine power distribution system is its con¬nection to earth or ground. The grounding network serves to protect men and machinery from the hazards associated with electrical equipment which is operating improperly. Since the mine site is determined by the location of the rock or mineral to be extracted, the conditions required for the installation of an adequate grounding system are not always easily met. If annual rainfall is low or soil resistivity is high, an extensive array of buried metallic conductors may be necessary to assure a low-resistance connec¬tion to earth. Measurement of soil parameters can be made before the construction of a grounding grid is begun, and the configuration of a metallic network, which will yield the desired values of earth resistance and potential gradient, thereby ascertained. Proper design at the time the ground bed is installed will save much time and expense in later years. Ground conductors extend from the buried grid to each piece of mo¬bile and portable equipment via overhead lines or multi-conductor cables. In this fashion all machine frames are referenced to the same potential as the grounding medium. Protective circuitry must be installed to monitor\current flow in the ground conductors or the potential drop across the neutral grounding resistor, which is placed between the grounding grid and the neutral point on the distribution transformer secondary. In addition to explosion-proof enclosures, the IEC has published recommendations: 1. 79-2 Pressurized Enclosures, 2. 79-3 Intrinsic Safety, 3. 79-5 Sand-Filled Apparatus, 4. 79-6 Oil-Immersed Apparatus, and 5. 79-7 Increased Safety. All these are valid methods of electrical hazard reduction and find wide use in industries other than mining. Magison (52) discusses in detail each technique and, therefore, such an examination will not be repeated. Two other systems, lamina and labyrinth, are but variations of common explosion-proof enclosures and, therefore, will not be cov¬ered. (34,35,46,53,54,61) By examining other national authorities' opinion, the following will investigate each system's applicability to coal mining. Intrinsic safety applies to any system which is incapable of re¬leasing sufficient energy to be an electrical hazard. (49) Not one foreign country contacted disagreed with the concept, and they find these systems totally acceptable. Only South Africa does not accept oil-immersed apparatus, but no reasons were given. (62) Healy (27) stated that Queenlands, Austrailia would accept all techniques, yet some were still to be employed. Japan specifications allow for all but sand filled. Presented below is a review of how the objectives, as outlined in the statement of the problem, were achieved. 1. Methods of evaluating the performance of grounding systems must be described. These methods are the subject of Chapter III. 2. Field trips to operating mines should be undertaken, and a cri¬tique of their grounding systems made upon the basis of obser¬vation and the application of the above techniques. An analysis of field trip data, along with practical recommendations, is in¬cluded in Chapter IV, while a complete review of all field trips is given in Appendix I. 3. Because of their thoroughness, present coal mine regulations should be evaluated, and their applicability to open-pit environ¬ments appraised. This has been done in consultation with governmental agency, manufacturing, operating mine, and consult¬ing engineers. As stated in Chapter IV, insight gained through field observations has served to amplify and extend the base of knowledge from which the recommendations were made. 4. The results of these investigations should lead to suggested Federal standards. Such recommendations comprise Appendix II. In addition, several important factors, which are discussed in Chapter IV, were brought to light as a direct result of the field research. 5. To rapidly and dependably locate shorts and opens in mining equipment power cables. Approach: The approximate locations of faults are found using a sound pulse echo, then the faults are exactly located with one of two probes. How It Works: To approximately locate u fault in shielded or unshielded cable, the cable is disconnected from the mine power center, and connected to the sound pulse generator. The generator is also connected to the ground conductor of the cable. When the generator is energized, electrical pulses are transmitted, and each moves along the conductor until it reaches a fault. When a pulse reaches the fault an echo returns to the instrument, either a positive pulse if the fault is an open, or a negative pulse if the fault is a short. See Figure 1. The further along the cable the first fault is from the instrument, the longer it takes for the echo to return. The instrument automatically measures the time and calculates the distance. The distance in feet is shown on an illuminated digital display.

The methane gas emitted from coal samples collected from the conveyor belts dumping into silos was measured by the Bureau of Mines. Approximately 50 pct of the total gas desorbed into a sealed can within 1 week was released during the first 24 hours. No simple correlation between the gassiness of the coal stored and the methane concentration in the silo open space above the coal was found. This was probably because the gassier coals were stored in open-top silos, which were better ventilated. Although the methane concentration in the open space above the coal pile was less than 1 pct for all 34 silos investigated, a methane measurement in the coal pile showed that high methane concentrations can exist. The methane released in the pile appears to accumulate and not liberate freely into the open space above the coal pile. Probably this gas is released during reclaiming operations, but further research is required to substantiate this claim.
