There is outlined below the essential facts brought out in an investigation into the causes for emulsion difficulties as experienced at many water gas plants . The investigation was conducted under a cooperative agreement between the University of Illinois Engineering Experiment Station , the Illinois State Geological Survey , and the U. S. Bureau of Mines . Funds of the Illinois Gas Association were used to defray a part of the costs . Active assistance was rendered by the Peoples Gas Light and Coke Company , of Chicago , who furnished a laboratory at Chicago for conducting the experiments , and loaned the services of Mr. E. A. Thiele to help with the laboratory work . A full report on the results of this work will be published by the Bureau of Mines later but it is believed desirable to bring the principal results now to the attention of the industry . In almost every gas plant where carbureted water gas is made , some difficulty is experienced , at one time or another , in separating the tar fran the water that condenses from the gas . The fact that annoyance from this source is ever present in some plants , and seldom present in others , leads to the belief that certain operating variables have considerable to do with the formation of difficulty separable tarwater emulsions . Accordingly , when samples of tar were collected for laboratory study , the operating conditions and methods were simultaneously observed and recorded.

The Broughton and Ring magnetite deposits in Essex County, N. Y., are thought to be in a mineralized belt that extends from the Lake Sanford mining district to Lake Champlain and passes through the Mineville district. The country rook is syenite-gneiss, similar to that in the Mineville area. The Bureau of Mines conducted a vertical magnetometer survey of the area. On the Broughton properties there are no indications, magnetically, of magnetite in any degree of concentration. 'On the ding properties a number of sharp, localized magnetic anomalies were observed. One core-drill hole was bored to a, depth of 48.3 feet, also, to test one of the strongest anomalies. The field work was in progress from December 1943 to July 1944. Although no iron ore was intersected by' the drill hole, it showed that the amphibolite rook, at a depth of 6 to 100 feet below the surface, contained enough magnetite and iron sulfides to account for the anomalies recorded by the magnetometer survey.

The Bureau of Mines explored the use of air or natural gas for recovering additional oil from natural water-drive reservoirs with little or no original gas saturation. Engineering and production data for a field in the Mid-Continent area, results of limited laboratory experiments, and data shown in the literature were considered. Injecting air into a water-coned well could seriously damage the well. Injecting natural gas into the watered-out zone could improve the producing water-oil ratio. In the reservoir studied, oil recovery can be increased by injecting natural gas to decrease water-oil ratios. Laboratory tests on a core from the field show an increase in oil recovery of 7.6 percent of the original oil in place as a result of increasing the free gas saturation. This recovery could amount to as much as an additional 6 million barrels of oil from this field.

A-weighted sound levels around vibrating screens in coal preparation plants often exceed 90 dB(A). The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is actively developing noise controls to reduce noise generated by horizontal vibrating screens. A 121-microphone, 3.5-meter-diameter array was used to perform beamforming to determine locations of significant noise radiation on the screen. Below about 1 kHz, the screen body was found to be the most significant noise source. The beamforming contour maps showed several key locations on the sides of the screen and the feedbox are the most significant contributors. Operating deflection shape (ODS) analysis was used to examine the screen behavior under actual operating conditions. This information is helpful in determining how to modify the screen body to reduce the noise radiated by the screen below 1 kHz. The analysis showed modal vibration patterns on the sides and feed box were the main contributors to noise. The results show several areas on the screen sides and feedbox that can be modified to reduce noise.

Sound experimental ingots of zinc alloys for use as rolling slabs were cast with a specially constructed, semicontinuous casting machine. Nominal alloy compositions of Zn-1.0 percent Cu, Zn-0.12 and 0.36 percent Ti, and Zn-1.0 percent Cu-0.03 to 0.36 percent Ti were cast. This Bureau of Mines study was conducted to evaluate the suitability of the casting procedure for providing stock for rolling into sheet. Microscopic examination of ingot sections revealed structures in which grain size varied from the outer to center ingot zones. Columnar grains present in the center zone of the Zn-1.0 percent Cu ingot were absent in the titanium-containing ingots. The ingots with titanium displayed a finer grain size and eutectic structure in the center ingot zone than in the outer zone; the transition in grain size between the two zones was quite abrupt in some ingots. The overall grain size of the titanium-containing ingots was finer than that of alloys cast by more conventional methods. Chemical analysis revealed that compositional segregation is not a significant factor in the formation of the ingot structure. Microstructural studies of small ingots of similar alloys solidified at slow, fast, and intermediate rates confirmed that the ingot structure in the semicontinuous-cast ingots is related to cooling rate, which is, in turn, related to the particular casting machine design and the influx of cooling water on the withdrawing ingots. Microstructures of thin sheet hot-rolled from slabs of the semicontinuous-cast ingots demonstrated that the ingot structure does not preclude the rolling of sheet having a uniform microstructure. Results of hardness surveys of the semicontinuous-cast ingots demonstrated that copper and titanium exert essentially additive hardening effects in these cast alloys.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the occurrence of slickensides in mine roof in the Pittsburgh coalbed in a portion of the Valley Camp No.3 mine in southwestern Pennsylvania to improve the potential for prediction of slicken-sided zones and determine the orientations of the most prominent slickensided planes. Two distinct types of slickensides were identified; those which were associated with clay veins observed in the coalbed (genetic), and those which were unrelated to any visible structure (nongenetic). The study draws three conclusions: (1) Nongenetic slickensides are not the result of tectonic forces, (2) both genetic and nongenetic slickensides tend to dip at an angle of 30°, and (3) genetic slickensides tend to be alined parallel to the trend of the clay vein and usually dip toward the center of the clay vein. A schematic roof bolting plan is presented that may provide improved roof support where slickensides are present. Roof stability could be improved by supplemental bolting in the direction normal to the plane of slickensides.

Reduce dust exposure of longwall shearer operators by keeping them upwind of the primary cutting drum. Approach Use a different coal cutting sequence by cutting from headgate-to-tailgate, making the cleanup pass from tail-gate-to-headgate. How It Works The cutting action of the shearer drum is usually the primary source of respirable dust at longwall shearer faces. Dust exposure of the shearer operator is deter-mined by his position relative to the lead drum, which is normally in the raised position taking a full sump. On long-wall faces where the cut pass is taken from tail-to-head, against the primary airflow, the shearer operators must remain at their controls, on the return-air-side of the primary dust source, to maintain proper control. A simple method to lower shearer operators' dust exposures is to extract the primary coal from head-to-tail, thus positioning the operators up-wind of the lead cutting drum. The bottom coal is then cut, and the floor cleaned by the trailing drum during the tail-to-head cleanup pass. This sequence places the primary dust source, the cutting action of the shearer drums, on the return-air side of both shearer operators, except when cutting out at the longwall headgate.

Western mines have had limited choices for standing support. Wood cribs were often too soft and unstable. The introduction of the Can support in the early 1990’s provided a very effective alternative and remains the dominant form of tailgate support. Water-filled prestressing cells are now used to cap the Can and preload it to provide an active roof load. The Cluster Prop, consisting of three timber wedge props bundled together, provides more capacity than an equivalent sized Can support and improves transport efficiency. However, the Cluster Prop is less stable and does not maintain a consistent load throughout its loading profile. Pumpable roof supports are another alternative support, but they have not been proven in high deformation environments. Alternative supports are also being used in longwall recovery operations. These include the Rocprop and Omni Prop, which are extendable support systems. They also provide active roof loading which can be beneficial in these applications. Specialty supports, such as the Sand Prop and Spider Prop, have also been introduced into western longwall operations. This paper compares the performance characteristics of these various support systems.

Provide a portable crushing capability to keep conveyor haulage close to the working face and permit more efficient and safer ore handling in low headroom, hardrock mines. Approach A readily portable jaw crusher is used which meets machine size, feed rock size, product size, and throughput requirements for low headroom, hardrock mines. How It Works The crusher is mounted on wheels to expedite frequent moves and to allow crushing of mined rock or ore near the working face. The crushed product is then placed on conveyor belts that are ex-tended as the crusher is moved. Keeping crushing and conveyor haulage near the face minimizes the haulage distances for trucks and loaders. Loading and haulage of run-of-mine ore is frequently the highest operational cost in underground mines. These costs can be significantly reduced by use of a belt conveyor, which is a common practice in coal and other soft mineral mines. The new low-profile hard rock crusher gives the same advantage of extensive belt haulage capabilities to low headroom, hardrock mines. The low-profile crusher will accept feed up to 30 inches when operating under 11 feet of headroom. The headroom required for crusher operation was reduced by tilting the jaws, feeding the crusher horizontally, and placing the eccentric shaft at the back or in a horizontal plane with the jaws. Several short color films describing new technology developed through Bureau of Mines research are available on a loan basis. The films review results of Bureau research programs aimed at aiding the minerals industry by increasing mine productivity, ensuring worker health and safety, and enhancing minerals recovery, processing and recycling. Most of the films are available in a choice of for mats: 16mm film, ½" VHS cassette tape, or ¾" U-matic tape. The films are loaned by the Bureau of Mines free of charge; borrowers are requested to pay only the return postage and for any damage to the films. All titles are also available for purchase in 16mm or videotape formats. Research was conducted to develop operating techniques and define some of the limiting parameters for microbially converting hydrous calcium sulfate to hydrogen sulfide. The work was carried out in either glass stoppered flasks or anaerobic fermentors. Using the criteria of pH, temperature, number of bacteria per milliliter of test solution, and hydrogen sulfide produced, it was shown that hydrous calcium sulfate could be microbially converted to hydrogen sulfide at a rate of 7.3 g H2S/1 of fermentor volume per 24 hours. The various parameters defined were pH, temperature, and medium exchange rate. These were shown to be a pH range of 7.2 to 8.8, a temperature range of 30° to 35° C, and a medium exchange rate of 70 percent of the ferment or volume per 24 hours. It was also shown that a daily waste was between 50 and 77 percent as effective as sodium lactate in supporting the production of hydrogen sulfide and that by utilizing a gas to purge the fermentation system, a 1.7-fold increase in hydrogen sulfide was obtained.

"The accompanying tabulation gives the results of a series of operating tests on two types of small stokers. One was an inclined, natural-draft, moving-grate, overfeed ""hand-stoker"" fired and manipulated by hand; the other was. a horizontal, forced-draft, stationary-grate, underfeed, mechanical unit-stoker operated by an electric motor. These were installed as shown by the accompanying sketches (figs. 1 and 2) under horizontal return tubular boilers of a nominal rating of 150 bl.h.p. each.The steam load carried by these boilers was a rather typical heating load. It was fairly constant and of about 30 bl.h.p. throughout the summer months, with small variation between day and night. During the winter months the daily variations were dependent upon the outside temperature. The boilers were banked a considerable part of the night.As noted in the table, two kinds of coal were used. The size of one kind was run-of-mine and the other 11/4 inch nut and clack. These coals from two different mines of the New River district both caked considerably during burning, the nut and slack more than the other. Analyses of the coal were as follows:"

The National Mining Association and the Mine Safety and Health Administration requested that the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conduct full-scale evaluations of a recently developed carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) reinforcement technique for upgrading existing mine ventilation seals to withstand an explosion pressure of 50 psi or greater. The evaluation was conducted in the NIOSH Pittsburgh Research Laboratory’s Lake Lynn Experimental Mine (LLEM) near Fairchance, PA. The purpose of the evaluation was to determine the blast resistance of the CFRP reinforcement technique, designed to increase the strength of two types of existing 20-psi-rated in situ mine ventilation seals. Two candidate ventilation seals were selected to represent the 20-psi alternative seal designs typical of those used in mines prior to July 2006. Installed within the LLEM were (1) a 4-ft-thick pumpable cementitious foam seal using material with a designed 150- to 200-psi average compressive strength at 28 days and (2) a 24-in-thick, low-density cementitious block seal with a center pilaster and keyed to the floor and ribs. The materials necessary for the CFRP reinforcement technique were then installed on the outby (active) side of each seal, and the seals were subjected to explosion overpressures. Both seals with the CFRP reinforcement retrofit successfully withstood explosion pressures of 60 psi or greater during the full-scale evaluations in the LLEM.

(being shipped as bailast in ocean freighters). Within the last 10 years it has become more economical to use local sands, and there has been a general shift from the Belgian sand. Deposits of purer sand were treated and used for 'some time: but the suprly became limited, and means were sought to beneficiate the more bountiful subpay-f impure beach sands. These sands are composed of, 50 percent feldspar and 50 percent quartz, with small amounts of iron- bearing minerals, The most objectionable impurities in these West coast sands are the oxides of iron and aluminum. The Del Monte (Calif.) beach sand contains about 0.13 percent FeqQg and about 11.0 percent Aig03 (the latter being furnished by the large amount of feldspar present.) For the manufacture of feldspar present.) For the manufacture of flint-glass containers the maximuni quantities of these two impurities permitted in the sand are 0.05 percent F20 and 6 to 8 percent A1203.. The Fe0g occurs in the sand as follows: Traces of iron-bearing minerais resistant to weathering, ferruginous clay stains on the sand grains, and iron minerais not visible and possibly in solid solution or as colloidal incisions in the grains of feidspar or quartz. A good part of the iron in the sand is present in the traces of iron-bearing minerals, biotite, ilmenite, garnet, monazite; and hornblende. Biotite is present in larger quantities than the others. Samples of quartz, were freed of iron-bearing minerais by the use of heavy liquid (sp.gr. 2.70), leached with boiling HCI and SnCl2. Under a microscope a few apparently clean quartz grains were selected, and Fe203 was determined spectrographically to be 0.03 percent. Since 1988, there have been 17 documented incidents in the United States and Canada in which carbon monoxide (CO) is suspected to have migrated through ground strata into occupied enclosed spaces as a result of proximate trench blasting or surface mine blasting. These incidents resulted in 39 suspected or medically verified carbon monoxide poisonings and one fatality. To better understand the factors contributing to this hazard, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) carried out studies in a 12-foot diameter sphere to identify key factors that may enhance the levels of CO associated with the detonation of several commercial trenching explosives. The gaseous detonation products from emulsions, a watergel, and ANFO blasting agents as well as gelatin dynamite, TNT, and Pentolite boosters were measured in an argon atmosphere and compared with those for the same explosives detonated in air. Test variables included explosive formulation, wrapper, aluminum addition, oxygen balance, and density. Major contributing factors to CO production, under these laboratory test conditions, are presented. The main finding is the high CO production associated with the lack of afterburning in an oxygen poor atmosphere. Fumes measurements are compared with the manufacturer’s reported IME fume class and with the Federal Relative Toxicity Standard 30 CFR Part 15 in order to gain an understanding of the relative toxicity of some explosives used in trench blasting.

This study is one of a number conducted to determine the concentration of dust in the air during the complete cycle of operation in wet drilling information as to various factors connected with drilling in mining operations is considered to be of definite value in the control and prevention of air dustiness, and it is particularly desirable to ascertain What features of present-day wet-drilling operations in mine work contribute to dust disease and to remedy deficiencies when they are found. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS A testing alit through rock strata is being developed by the Mining Division of the United States bureau of Mines at Mount Weather, Va., and the tests discussed in this report were conducted there. This experimental alit in rock, constitutes a typo of laboratory where mine conditions can be closely simulated and where many of the variables likely to occur in an actual mine can be eliminated or at least controlled with reasonable effort, thus affording maximum opportunities to secure fundamental data uncomplicated by extraneous conditions. A series of open-flow tests was conducted in the Chickasha gas field, Grady County, Oklahoma, during June, 1927, under the direction of the U. S. Bureau of Mines and at the request of the Oklahoma Corporation Commission. The purpose of these teats was to determine whether or not any differences existed in the open-flow volume of a gas well when taken through well-head nipples of different diameters, and further, to establish if possible a relationship between open-flow volumes taken through well-head nipples of various diameters. The open flow of a well is the volume or quantity of gas, measured under standard conditions, that a well will produce when open to the atmosphere. There are several methods used for determining the open flow of wells; some of the methods are more suitable under certain conditions than others. The Pitot tube method is the simplest, is applicable to almost any condition, and is the one most commonly used. In the tests described in this paper no attempt was made to compare the Pitot tube method with the minute pressure measurement method or the orifice measurement method.5

"During the coming winter, it is probable that many householders who have habitually been users of anthracite coal will be obliged to turn to some other fuel for heating purposes, because of the limited supply of anthracite. The next best fuel, from a standpoint of cleanliness and ease of operation, is coke, but here again the supply is inadequate and the householder will have to fall back on bituminous coal. Though bituminous coal has the dis¬advantage of being dirty to handle, requiring more care in firing, and of giving off considerable smoke, it will be more generally available, costs less, and in the better grades which will naturally find their way to the domestic market, is higher in heat value, and contains less ash than anthracite.Choice of CoalThere a variety of bituminous coals are available, the householder should choose a low volatile coal, such as New River, Pocahontas, or some other ""smokeless"" coal, or the British coal now being offered in the markets along the Atlantic seaboard. Though not necessary to have the coal sized, as is the case with anthracite, it will be found cleaner to use coal from which the fine dirt has been screened. If it is found that excessive dust is caused when firing the coal, this can be reduced by slightly wetting the coal at the front of the bin, as it is being used.Method of Firingusing bituminous coal instead of anthracite in the domestic furnace, it will be necessary to use an entirely different method of fir Instead of leveling the fuel bed and putting on fresh coal in an even layer over the entire fire box, the coked and partly burned coal remaining from the previous firing should be pushed as much as possible to one side of the box, and the fresh coal thrown into the empty side so as to leave some burning coal exposed. In this way the green coal is heated slowly, the volatile gases are given off gradually, and are ignited by the burninggoing to waste up the chimney unburned."

Fused - salt electrorefining has been successfully applied to the purification of vanadium metal . The electrolyte used in this refining technique was sodium chloride to which had been added 3 to 6 percent vanadium as vanadium dichloride . The average deposition current efficiency was 91 percent . Oxygen and nitrogen , the impurities in commercially produced vanadium metal , were reduced by two - thirds of the amount contained in the feed material . Hardness of the vanadium- metal product was reduced from an initial 97 Rockwell B ( RB ) to a minimum of 35 Rg . The reduction of these impurities markedly improved the plasticity of the final product obtained by melting the crystalline cell metal into small ingots . These ingots could be given a 99 - percent cold reduction by rolling before edge cracking appeared . Growing interest in high - purity vanadium and the industrial need for purer metals and improved alloys for use under high temperatures and high speeds have demanded the elimination and/or control of impurities . Accordingly, research to eliminate or control the undesirable impurities has been expanded .

The explosive oils, nitroglycerin (NG) and ethylene glycol dinitrate (EGDN), were extracted from dynamites by a halocarbon solvent and were then determined by high-pressure liquid chromatography. Separation was achieved by liquid-liquid chromatography on a column packed with Durapak-Carbowax 400/Corasil II and the eluted NG and EGDN were detected with a double-beam ultraviolet detector.
