The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated a hydrochloric (HC1)-calcium fluoride (CaF2) leaching procedure to treat domestic manganese (Mn)-bearing silicate resources. The proposed process is an alternative to high-temperature and energy-intensive extractive techniques. Single-stage leaching with a stoichiometric amount of HCl and a F-Mn mole ratio of 0.2 extracted 96 pct of the Mn when the leach conditions were 50° C, 3 h, and 35 pct solids. Ninety-eight percent of the Mn was extracted during countercurrent leaching at similar conditions. A process flowsheet was developed that incorporated HC1-Cab leaching, excess leach acid utilization, fluoride (F) recycle, and Mn recovery. When the domestic manganese silicate ore was processed, 98 pct of the Mn was extracted, 99 pct of the Cab was reclaimed, and a leach residue was produced that passed the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Extraction Procedure (EP) Test for nonhazardous waste.

"It has been recently suggested that the exceptionally high antitumor and antibacterial activity of natural fredericamycin A (FMA) is related to its ability to spontaneously generate the superoxide anion (02-) and hydroxyl (""OH) radicals in aerobic solutions [Hilton, B. D., Misra, R., & Zweier, J. L. (1986) Biochemistry 25, 5533]. With a view to understand the mechanistic details, attempts were made to reproduce earlier electron spin resonance (ESR) evidence for the oxygenated free radical formation in well-aerated solutions of natural FMA in dimethyl sulfoxide and dilute H 20 2• Little or no evidence was obtained for the formation of the 0 2- and methoxy (""OCH3) radicals, while the detected formation of the 'OH and methyl ('CH3) radicals was attributable largely to mechanisms not involving FMA. These results thus reopen the T question regarding the mechanism of its exceptionally high tumoricidal-bacteriocidal activity. This paper reports on an electron spin resonance (ESR) investigation of the formation of oxygenated free radicals in solutions of natural fredericamycin A (abbreviated as FMA) which has recently been reported to be a highly potent anti¬tumor antibiotic (Pandey et al., 1981; Warnick-Pickle et al., 1981). The impetus for this undertaking was provided by recent reports (Hilton et al., 1986; Stinson, 1986) suggesting that the strong tumoricidal activity with high therapeutic—toxic index of FMA was related to its ability for the spontaneous generation of superoxide anion (02-) and hydroxyl (OH) radicals. For example, the suggested mechanism for the formation of 02- by FMA was (Hilton et al., 1986)FMA-OH + O2 FMA-O + H+ + 02-Here FMA—OH is simply the FMA molecule emphasizing the —OH moiety which becomes FMA-O, the free radical rep¬resenting the oxidized form of the drug. While some other highly effective anticancer drugs in current clinical application, such as bleomycin, are also thought to exert their antitumor effects via the formation of reactive drug-based or oxygenated free radicals (Carmichael et al., 1985; Gianni et al., 1983), FMA was considered unique in that only in this case the free radical formation was thought to be spontaneous, rather than through a metal- or an enzyme-activated process (Hilton et al., 1986; Stinson, 1986). Thus it was suggested (Hilton et al., 1986; Stinson, 1986) that FMA could be the forerunner of a new class of anticancer drugs. However, we noted that while the hypothesis seemed plausible, the reported ESR spectral evidence appeared to be ambiguous. Because of the high significance of the earlier conclusions (Stinson, 1986), we undertook a systematic ESR study of the radical formation in FMA solutions, and as discussed below, our conclusions disagree with those reported earlier."

Determine the extent of upper extremity cumulative trauma disorders (UECTD's) in the U.S. mining industry. Background UECTD's are injuries that develop gradually over a period of time as a result of repeated stress to a particular body part without adequate time between stresses for full recovery to occur. The stresses that contribute to UECTD's may occur because of the following work components: awkward position of wrist or arm, excessive manual force, high repetitions of manual movement and effort, cold environment, and vibration. Cumulative trauma injuries to the arm and hand have become an ever growing concern among safety and health professionals in a number of different industries and work settings, such as meatpacking operations, assembly-line work, and keyboarding. Mine workers arc also exposed to a combination of stressors and work design deficiencies that result in arm and hand injuries. For example, certain job tasks and environments, such as that of an underground jackleg driller, expose miners to segmental (hand-arm) vibration and cold temperatures. Operators of underground mobile equipment, such as scoops and trams, regularly have their hands in direct contact with vibrating levers and controls.

In conjunction -with the statistical survey of the lime industr-.r in 1939, by the Bureau of Hines, producing companies reported the lime-fuel ratios attained in their plants according to type of kiln and kind of fuel. Each ratio, expressed as the number of pounds of lime burned by a unit quantity of fuel, was weighted according to the tonnage of quicklime pro- . duced at the reporting plant and grouped with similar data from other plants, so that an average ratio for each type of fuel and,kiln could be calculated. By this method the variables trat affect ratios of individual plants are more or less equalized, and the computed average lime-fuel ratios provide a fair measure of kiln and fuel efficiencies during 1939.

Although much valuable work has been done in the study of dust explosions, the laboratory technique has not been developed to the point where the many factors involved can be properly controlled, and thus where really fundamental information can be obtained. This paper presents a brief discussion of the difficulties encountered in fundamental work on dust explosions, a description of apparatus intended, to overcome some of them, and an account of some results obtained. FACTORS INVOLVED IN DUST EXPLOSIONS The more important factors pertaining to the dust cloud itself which are known to determine the phenomena of explosions are (1) the kind of dust; (2) its fineness; (3) its concentration in the exploding cloud; and (4) the nature of the interior motions, or turbulence, of the cloud before and during the explosion. These factors are arranged in what seems to be an ascending order of complexity. The kind of dust is the factor most easily subject to control. The fineness of the dust at first sight seems to be a controllable factor, but when it is recalled [that] most explosible dusts are mixtures of particles of continuously varying sizes so small as to pass through the finest woven sieves, and therefore difficult to separate either for purposes of analysis or experiment, the fineness is seen to be a factor difficult to control accurately.

The goal of this research was to adapt the highly successful rock borehole shear test for use in deep, small-diameter boreholes. Operating somewhat on the principle of a rock bolt, the borehole shear test measures both the expansion pressure and pulling force to give discrete measures of rock shearing strength as a function of the applied normal pressure. A new instrument was designed and built to fit into a 2-3/8 inch diameter hole. Unfortunately the design became so complicated, the operation is nut reliable. This is attributed to constraints of the small hole, and added requirements of an in-hole anchor to push against, and a rotating shear plate cleaner for repeated tests down-hole. A clue to the d: vice complexity is its length, which is over 10 feet. Furthermore it employs concentric cylinders and one hydraulic cylinder bored into the piston of another, or it would be even longer. Meanwhile drilling technology has advanced to greatly reduce costs of drilling 5- or 6-inch diameter holes. The downhole tester therefore should be redesigned and simplified for use in a larger diameter drill hole.

"Dust abatement by water sprays involves the subprocesses of 1) collision between dust particles and water droplets, 2) adhesion of particles to droplets, and 3) engulfment of particles by the droplets. A review of the fundamental aspects of these subprocesses shows that collisions between particles and droplets are determined by aerodynamics and the size and surface charge of the particles and of the droplets. However, the adhesion and engulfment subprocesses depend upon the wetting characteristics of the particles. Although wetting agents (also known as surfactants) have been used as dust suppressants in several investigations, conflicting results are available regarding their effectiveness. In this paper, we show that these results can be explained if the effects of coal rank on surfactant adsorption and wetting characteristics are taken into account.The influence of several nonionic surfactants containing polyethoxy adducts on the wetting behavior of coal is presented. The wetting was determined by a modified Walker Test method, and contact angle measurements. The results show that the wettability of coal depends upon coal rank, structure of the hydrocarbon chain of the surfactant, and the number of ethoxy groups in the molecule.IntroductionDue to the inherent nature of the mining process, a large number of particles are generated, a portion of which becomes airborne to create dust. Dust can be aesthetically and environmentally unacceptable and it can also be explosive. Fine particles in the respirable size range ( < 5 urn) are con-sidered to cause lung diseases, namely, silicosis, pneumoconiosis, etc.(1) Several approaches to reduce dust in mine environments are practiced throughout the mining industry. These include decrease in generation of dust through improvements in mine machinery, ventilation (in which lower dust levels are achieved by dilution of contaminated air with clean air), and dust removal methods. Water sprays are most commonly used to remove dust par-ticles. Recently, scrubbers are reported to have been installed on mining machines to remove dust,(2,3) which also make use of water sprays to reduce dust."

In conjunction with steady increases in production levels, longwall operators have applied greater quantities of ventilating air and spray water in an effort to control respirable dust and/or methane. Air velocities greater than 7.6 mls (1500 fpm) have been measured on longwall faces. Operators have expressed concern over the potential entrainment of respirable dust at these high velocities. The greatest likelihood for entraining dust into the high velocity airstream may occur as shields are advanced allowing relatively dry particles to fall from the shield canopy directly into the airstream. Laboratory tests to simulate dust liberation during shield movement were conducted at the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory of NIOSH at velocities ranging from 2.0 to 8.2 m/s (400 to1600 fpm). Airborne dust samples were obtained with personal impactors to quantify the size distribution and concentration of the dust entrained at the various air velocities. Statistically significant increases in both total and respirable dust concentrations were measured as test air velocities were increased.

The stone resources in certain localities and the kinds of stone available often influence manufacturing companies in their choice of plant location and in possible expansion of their activities. Limestone in particular is an important raw material for many processing industries. In planning highways and public works and placing contracts therefor, the availability of aggregates and road stone is significant. On the other hand, persons who contemplate entering the stone business or opening now quarries need information as to possible competition. To meet the growing need for regional data of this type, the Bureau of Mines has compiled from its records and presents herein the location of stone quarries by States and counties and by kinds of stone. The list covers all stationary and portable commercial quarry operations whose production statistics for 1940 were reported to the Bureau of Mines but does not include undeveloped deposits and noncommercial or Government-operated quarries.

New Continuous Personal Dust Monitors (CPDM) submitted to NIOSH for approval to sample coal mine dust must accurately measure respirable coal mine dust in mine environments. There are two steps in the process which may be done in any order. The manufacturer is required to submit the results of a comparative underground coal mine dust sampling study, where the candidate CPDM is compared to an approved coal mine dust sampling device (currently the Coal Mine Dust Personal Sampling Unit (CMDPSU)). This testing shall follow the guidelines outlined below and shall demonstrate through weighted regression analysis that the mean coefficient of variation with bias correction is equal to or less than 12.8%. The other step involves laboratory testing to determine the electronic and environmental stability. This testing must be conducted by a private, commercial, academic or other laboratory approved by NIOSH.

Montana&apos;s coal reserves are estimated to be more than 120 billion tons, 24.6 percent of U.S. reserves. Montana&apos;s reserves are the largest in the nation. Coal fields are located throughout the state, primarily east of the Continental Divide. Three of the state&apos;s 17 coal fields have producing mines. Coal resources range from lignite to high volatile bituminous; however, most of the coal currently mined is subbituminous. Although Lewis and Clark mentioned the presence of coal along the banks of the Missouri River in Montana in 1805, the first major mine was not opened until 1867, at Chestnut, Montana, near Bozeman. The mine at Chestnut served Fort Ellis until the mine was bought by the Northern Pacific Railroad in 1883. By 1900, underground coal mining had developed throughout the state, primarily to supply fuel to the railroads. In the 1920s, large-scale surface mining began in Colstrip to fuel railroad steam engines. Currently, all coal mined in the state is produced from surface mines. The Office of Surface Mining granted the Montana regulatory program conditional approval April 1, 1980, followed by final approval February 1 1,1982. Montana&apos;s Abandoned Mine Lands Program was approved November24,1980, and its emergency program was approved August 18, 1983. A Federal Lands Cooperative Agreement was approved May 8, 1981.

A hygroscopicity tandem differential mobility analyzer (HTDMA) technique is used to determine size-effect of nanoparticles (NaCl, (NH4)2 SO4, KCl, NH4NO3, MgCl2,CaCl2) on their hygro­scopic properties (deliquescence relative humidity (DRH) and hygroscopic growth factor (GF)). The HTDMA system uses a combination of two nano DMAs and two regular DMAs to measure particle size change in a wide dynamic particle size range. Particles are subsequently analyzed with a transmission electron microscopy to investigate the potential effect of particle structure or morphology on the hygroscopic properties. We found that structural properties of NaCl and (NH4)2SO4 particles also play an important role in determination of the DRH and GF and are more pronounced at smaller diameters. Data show that the DRH of NaCl nanoparticles increased from *75% up to *83% RH at 8 nm and that their GF decreased with decreasing size. The extent to which the GF of NaCl nanoparticles decreased with decreasing size was greater than theoretically predicted with the Kelvin correction. The GF of furnace-generated NaCl nano­particles that have pores and aggregate shape was found to be smaller than that of atomizer-generated particles that are close to perfectly cubic. For the case of atomizer-generated (NH4)2SO4 nanoparticles, we observed no signi?cant size-effect on their DRH, and the measured GF agreed well with predicted values using the Kelvin correction. For furnace-generated (NH4)2SO4 nanoparticles, a gradual growth at moder­ate RH without noticeable deliquescence behavior occurred. Their TEM images showed that contrary to atomizer-generated (NH4)2SO4 nanoparticles the fur­nace-generated (NH4)2SO4 nanoparticles are not perfectly spherical and are often aggregates having pores and holes, which may favor holding residual water even in the dried condition. For atomizer-generated KCl, MgCl2, and CaCl2 nanoparticles, we observed no signi?cant size-effects on their DRH and GF for the mobility size as small as 20 nm.

This paper outlines the legal standards and methods for protecting underground coal mines in the United States from explosions of methane gas and coal dust. It will discuss inspection and monitoring of mine atmospheres, dilution of methane through ventilation, methane drainage prior to, during and post-mining, as well as explosion prevention through rock dusting and sealing of mined-out areas. Recent research findings of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Pittsburgh Research Laboratory on the magnitude of pressures obtained during methane explosions from modeling and full-scale explosion tests at the NIOSH Lake Lynn Experimental Mine will be presented. This work is currently being applied to modeling the structural response of explosion-proof mine seals to pressures from gas explosions. Also, new research will be presented on the inertization of float coal dust in mines through the addition of inert stone dust and on the application of the Coal Dust Explosibility Meter (CDEM), a handheld device developed by NIOSH to directly measure the explosibility of a coal dust - limestone dust mixture based on optical reflectivity.

Humphreys Gold Corporation of Denver, Colo., was conducting a successful placer operation in 1936 on North Clear Creek about 6 miles below Blackhawk in Gilpin County, Colo. About 3,000 cubic yards of gold-bearing gravel are dug daily (September. 1936) by two draglines and a power shovel. The gravel is screened in a portable washing plant; the trommel oversize is discarded, and the undersize is pumped to a gold-saving plant. The gold is caught in riffles in sluice boxes. The total cost of mining is about 20 cents per cubic yard. The mine is in a narrow canyon at an altitude of 7,200 feet. The Blackhawk-Central City branch of the Colorado & Southern RR. runs over the property. Freight platforms for receiving supplies were moved as the workings advanced. The workmen reached the mine on a speeder that ran on the railroad tracks from a point on the automobile highway (U. S. 40) on Clear Creek near the bottom of Floyd Hill, about 5 miles distant. The mine is 36 miles by road and speeder, or 30 miles by rail, from Denver.

"INTRODUCTION The rock-bit interaction during the cutting process in underground mines has been a matter of great concern to mining operators, researchers and manufacturers, particularly after the passage of strict environmental laws. Coal cutting bears directly on airborne coal dust generation and rock cutting generates frictional sparks which may cause face ignitions, jeopardizing the productivity, safety and economy of the industry. It is imperative to investigate into the factors which have influence on bit we.ar. Hurt and Evans (1981) concluded that the point attack bits have greater ignition potential than the conventional wedge shaped bits, and also worn bits were more responsible for ignition than the new bits. The results of a study (Khair et al., 1992) suggested that after 7% weight loss, the bit should be replaced. The polycrystalline compact diamond (PDC) tipped bits are reported to be cost effective in a study done by USBM (Twin Cities Research Center), and it was stated that the PDC tipped drill bits had 80 to 100 times longer life than the ordinary tungsten carbide (WC) tipped bits.This paper presents the results of the experiments which were conducted utilizing a coal cutting simulator at the laboratory of the Department of Mining Engineering, West Virginia University, USA. The description of the machine and the experimental set-up have been described elsewhere (Khair et al., 1989; Gehi & Khair, 1994), and therefore, will not be discussed here. The rock types which were used in experimen~ are Tennessee sandstone, Berea sandstone and Indiana limestone. The operating parameters include (1) drum speed, (2) water spray pressure and (3) bit type. Besides studying the wear characteristics influenced by the above mentioned variables, the effect of these parameters on the required cutting force, specific energy consumption, acoustic emissions rate and rise in temperature of the bit were also studied. A preliminary study was also done to compare we.ar characteristics of the WC bits with those of the poly-crystalline compact diamond tipped bits."

"INTRODUCTION During the last 4 months of 1943, the Bureau of Mines engaged in an investigation and exploratory drilling program in the area between the Coughlin and Galena Level mines near the town of Shullsburg, in Lafayette County, Wisconsin. The work was undertaken as part of a general Bureau of Mines investigation of the zinc-producing area of southwestern Wiscon¬sin at a time when an effort was being made to increase the production of metals important to the Nation's war program.The portion of the southwest Wisconsin zinc district in the immediate vicinity of Shullsburg and the Coughlin and Galena Level mines is well mineralized. The principal ore horizon is at shallow depth, and there is evidence that relatively extensive surface mining for lead was done over a period of many years. Underground mining' for lead and zinc has continued to the present time.The Bureau undertook an exploratory drilling program in the area immediately west and southwest of the Coughlin mine workings after thorough preliminary investigations and geologic studies indicated that such work would serve to guide operators in the development of new ore reserves needed for continuance of mining operations in that area."

"The Bureau of Mines receives many inquiries concerning favorable areas in which to prospect for gold, procedure to be followed, equipment required, and allied subjects. This circular has been prepared for use in reply to these inquiries.Interest in gold mining and prospecting for gold remains steady. From time to time many people take to the field to search for new gold deposits. A large percentage of them have had no previous experience in prospecting for lode gold; this paper has been written with the hope that it might assist these newcomers.A majority of the metal mines in the United States have been discovered by qualified prospectors who were searching for valuable minerals at the time. Chance, however, always has played a large part in finding mineral deposits. Some of the discoveries of the past were made by men on other errands, such as rounding up burros or hunting game. Accidental discoveries of ore bodies have been made in building roads and trails and in excavating for mine struc¬tures. Evidence of ore has been brought to the surface by burrowing animals and by ants; gold found in the craws of fowl has led to discoveries of deposits. Important discoveries have been made by men who had no knowledge of rocks or minerals; on the other hand, many ore bodies have been found by experienced prospectors, sometimes after hundreds of untrained men had already passed over the ground.The prospector who carries on his work diligently and intelligently is of course more likely to be rewarded for his efforts than the lazy or unintelligent worker; nevertheless, it is obvious that if valuable deposits are not present at the place being prospected none will be found. Conscientious and painstaking efforts to trace gold to its source usually disclose nothing more valuable than some narrow, unworkable seams; however, many deposits that were developed into profitable mines were found by this method of prospecting. Although some prospectors have made several lucky strikes, many others have spent their working lives searching for gold without finding anything worth while. Probably only one prospector out of several thousand ever finds anything worth developing. Moreover, only 1 out of every 300 or 400 properties developed becomes a profitable mine.Prospecting was begun in the Western States in the fifties as the miners looked for the source of gold found in placers. The search for gold has been continuous since that time; the number of prospectors in the field at any one time, however, has varied greatly. Except in some desert regions, practicallyall of the placer fields now being worked were discovered by old timers; more-over, most of the important gold districts were found by early prospectors. Important discoveries of lode mines, however, have been made from time to time. Most of the area in the mining regions of the West has been searched many times by prospectors, and nearly all of the easily found deposits have been located, but it is reasonable to expect that new gold mines will continue to be found. Most of the future discoveries undoubtedly will be of deposits that do not outcrop. Prospecting for such deposits requires considerable digging.Several important discoveries were made in 1934. One of these, the Rogers-Gentry gold mine at the edge of Antelope Valley in Los Angeles County, Calif., was found by an experienced prospector on an old patented homestead a number of miles from the nearest producing mine. The initial discovery at this mine was an iron-stained, decomposed, silicous limestone outcrop, with no vein structure evident at the surface, near a small, barren quartz outcrop and a water seep. Another discovery, the Silver Queen gold mine, in the same general region and near Mojave, Calif., was found by an experienced miner on an open fraction 400 by 1,400 feet in size between two old properties that were thought to have been worked out years ago. IN THIS RUN, THE ORIGINAL VENTILATION NETWORK HAS BEEN MODIFIED TO INCLUDE NEW INTAKE AND RETURN AIRSHAFTS AT THE WEST MAINS. Meerschaum or sepiolite is employed principally in tobacco pipes and cigar and cigarette holders, although a few other uses of minor importance are Down. The unique value of a meerschaum pipe is derived from the owner&apos;s pleasure in watching the color deepen with smoking and in having the color "set" at the desired shade. The name "meerschaum" (German for "sea foam") is applied because the material, when pure and dry, will float on water. Owing to its resemblance to the porous, bonelike structure of the cuttlefish, or septa, it is also known as sepiolite. There are a few scattered deposits of meerschaum in. the United States which have yielded a small product ion, but the world&apos;s supply of the&apos; material is obtained fined principally from Asia Minor, Meerschaum deposits near Eski-Shehir, Turkey, are said to have been worked 2,000 years ago, but commercial exploitation is a development of the last hundred years DESCRIPTION AND PROPERTIES Meerschaum is a hydrous magnesium silicate (H4Mg2Si3010) having the following theoretical analysis: Si02, 60.8 percent; MgO, 27.1 percent; H20, 12.1 percent. It is a soft. (H.2 - 2.5), fine-grained, earthy, white, gray, or yellow material. It is very light weight when pure (specific gravity, 1 to 2) and is highly absorbent. Because of its porosity the proportion of water present in the mineral is affected by the humidity&apos;of the atmosphere. In a moist atmosphere the water content may be as much as 21.7 percent. Then wet the material is soft and somewhat plastic. When dried again it becomes lard and tough. The toughness is especially apparent in some forms that have a fibrous or leathery texture.
